| Band, Pete, band!! I thought 1980 was the year the Jam could do
no wrong with the singles-buying public, and quite right too.
Then there was all that Two-tone stuff, then there was the New
Rommantics, then there was......

544.5 | The 80's - good to see the back of them | MAGIC::OCONNOR | Anorexoid | Wed Nov 29 1989 22:31 | 14 |
| "I Could be Happy" Altered Images
"Free Nelson Mandela" Specials AKA
"Swamp" and "Big Decision" That Petrol Emotion
"We're having all the fun" Fun Boy Three
There must be some more but I can't think of them now.
Not much of a decade for singles with Duran-boran, Howard Jones (where
are they now ?? Waiting at Bognor Regis train station I hope) and all
that sickly twaddle.

| Jim Kerr has stated that he **H-A-T-E-S** that record, that he must've
written it in his sleep (REM anyone ??) and that the vile vinyl
is only good as a makeshift frisbee.

Why does he continue to sing it then? Surely it's not to satisfy the

Forgotten!!! - And the Motorcade Sped On

| Re. -1 - some good choices there, Mr. Guru ;-)
FYI, Steinski was the guy behind THE MOTORCADE SPED ON - from memory,
he was one of the first artists to hit big trouble in the recording
industry for sampling.
Wonder what ever happened to the freebie singles given away by NME,
Melody Maker, Record Mirror and the like....some of them were quite
good, y'know.

544.20 | Thes must have been hits 'cos even I heard of them... | NSDC::SIMPSON | File Under Common Knowledge | Thu Jan 25 1990 12:08 | 68 |
| Bit late here, but anyway....
I stopped consciously following popular music (radio, TV etc.) in '83, so if
I've bumped into the record, then it must have sold well....
Reading through the list, its interesting to reflect on just how little popular
music endures - its mainly fashion and fad. Many of the 'super-stars' mentioned
have faded away shame isn't it?
Anyway, here's my list, in no order (I even like a couple of them!) :-)
Springsteen - Born in the USA
- the River
Tears for Fears - Everyone wants to rule the world
The Clash - Rock the Casbah
Adam and the Ants - Stand & Deliver
- Kings of the wild Frontier
- Prince Charming
INXS - Need you tonight
the Police - Every breath you take
Duran Duran - Rio
- Hungry like the wolf
- The reflex
...many more - but they all sound the same
Robert Palmer - Addicted to Love
Pink Floyd - The Wall (Jan '80)
Madonna - Waste of time mentioning them - they're covered
100's times in this conference...
U2 - Without you
- Where the streets have no name etc.
George Michael - Dunno, but he seems to have made a lot of money
Prince - When doves fly
- Kiss
David Bowie - Ashes to Ashes
- Lets Dance
Dire Straits - MOney for Nothing etc.
Frankie Goest to H'wood - Relax
- Two Tribes
Peter Gabriel - Games without Frontiers
- Sledgehammer
Michael Jackson - Thriller
- etc. etc. etc.
Cyndi Lauper - Time after time
Stevie Wonder - I just called to say I love you...
Chris de Burgh - Lady in Red
Band Aid - Do they know its Xmas
Kim Carnes (who?) - Bette Davis eyes
John Lennon - Woman
Marvin "I like my dad" Gaye - Sexual Healing
Europe - The final countdown
Marrs - Pump up the volume
Abba (swansong) - The Winner takes it all
The Cars - you might think
New Order - blue Monday
Billy Joel - uptown girl
Kate Bush - Running up that Hill
Culture Club - Do you really want to hurt me?
- Karma Chameleon
