24.0. "LIVE albums" by GYPSC::CHISHOLM (Dem Tambourines!) Tue Mar 29 1988 18:54

	Hello,

Talking about the live eagles album made me think about them
(live albums) in general. Personally I like them, but I have
friends who wouldn't give them the time of day. Granted some
are disappointing, but most are OK and some are fantastic.
What do others think? Below is a list of my live albums (the
ones I can remember anyway) and my ratings -

			Great

	Nine Tonight - Bob Seger
Just One Night - Eric Clapton
	Farewell Tour - Doobie Bros
	Under a Blood Red Sky - U2
Live in London - Al Jarreau
Shadows and Light - Joni Mitchell
	Travels	- Pat Metheny
Tour de Force (live) - Al di Meola
	Alchemy - Dire Straits

			O. K.

	Live (1975-1985) - Broocie
	8:30 - Weather Report
Live from the City of Light -	Simple Minds
Best of Frampton Comes Alive -	Peter Frampton
Bye Bye Blues - Blues Band
	? Eagles
	? Little Feat

			Disappointing

Live from Earth - Pat Benetar
	Still Life - Stones
? Fleetwood Mac (x Farmers Daughter)

Plus how "live" are live albums, Alchemy is the only one above
which claims to be untouched after recording.

I liked the album from George Harrison's Bangledesh benefit
concert done in the early 70s(?) in Madison Square Garden,
was disappointed (sort of) by Bruce's live compilation, and
    liked Peter Frampton's from '75.

Don't really care for the idea of live albums.

What I think is really annoying about live albums is that some record
producers use live albums as an excuse to make poor sound quality
    records.
Par example: Rush - Exit Stage Left. Normally Rush produce
exceptionally good quality albums, but Exit.. is terrible.

If you are going to make a live album then obviously the quality
is not as good a a studio lp, but there are limits.

    Matt.

Theoretically, digital recording should make an improvement in the
quality of live recordings, however I have yet to hear of a mobile
    digital studio.

Rush dislike making live albums so... If they didn't put as much
effort into 'Exit' then that's understandable.

A quality live recording which is as good as a studio cut is 'Exposed'
by Mike Oldfield. The quality of this is on a par with his contempary
studio recordings, and they were technically excellent at the time.

What I would like to know is whether people object to live recordings
with overdubs. From my point of view the objective of a live album
is to capture the concert atmosphere. With that in mind I would
rather listen to an atmospheric live album with overdubs, than vice
    versa.

    My fave live albums are:

    	Exposed Mike Oldfield
    	Made in Japan Deep Purple
Tour de Force Al Di Meola
In Concert Emerson Lake and Palmer

All of these, for me, supply atmosphere first.

If Rush dislike making live albums then they should'nt have
bothered!!!.Also all this crap about HI-TECH,DIGITAL remix
etc, etc, don't stand up I recall some very good LIVE albums
form the '60s and even some live '1st takes' of very early
blues singers bock in the '20s and '30s.Granted they were
just one man and his guitar!!.However doing a tour, with the
aid of a GOOD sound-man,mixer etc surely they can Pick/Mix
    the best.????

I agree with .13 there is no reason why a live album should be naff unless the
source material is duff. In which case presumably the concert wasn't worth
paying to see anyway. The quality of the performance almost always shines
through even the 'snap crackle & pop' of a bad bootleg.

My personal list would include :-

Dylan & the Band - Royal Albert Hall 1966
Doors - Absolutely Live
Grateful Dead - Live Dead (the best of their several excellent live albums)
Man - Maximum Darkness
Fairport Convention - In Real Time
Band - Rock of Ages
Band etc etc - Last Waltz

The Live album has provided me (and friends) with plenty of talk
in the past - much talk of many bands 'ubicquitous double live'
    albums.

    Faves:

    Before The Flood Dylan/Band
    Waiting For Columbus	Little Feat
    Made In Japan Purple People
    Live Bullet Bob Seger
    Frampton Comes Alive	Frampton
    Breaking Out Tull
    Thiry Seconds ... J. Airplane
    Live Dates Wishbone Ash
    Todd Rundgren Another Live
    Todd R Back To Bars
    Live (double) J Geils Band

The Dead are interesting - must be more live sides than any other
band. I mean, how could they resist the "Live Dead" title. "Live
In Europe" was originally to be called "Europe on 5,000 dollars
a day" but Warners nixed it (as they did with other Dead titles).

Seger's "Nine Tonight" is very live... but catch "Live Bullet" for
pre-"Night Moves" Seger in great form - can't hear the audience
    though.

Most are touched up in some way ... whatever the sleeves might say!

    I guess that's enough for now .....

24.18Quality vs QualitySUBURB::SUMMERFIELDCWide-angle watcherTue Apr 05 1988 19:0439
    re .13
If Rush dislike making live albums the they shouldn't have
     bothered!!!

Very true, but if their fans want a live album then there may be
some pressure on them to produce one. In fact Exit feels fine, it
just sounds bad. What I offered in the above statement was not an
excuse, just a possible reason. I am NOT apologising on Rush's behalf!

Also all this crap about HI-TECH,DIGITAL remix...

If the problem is that it sounds poor, then there can be several
reasons. ONE of these is a noisey recording. Some mobile studios
are very good, eg The Manor Mobile. Sure, digital wont add atmosphere
and feeling to a lacklustre recording, but it may enable you to
    hear it better.

... I recall some very good LIVE albums from the '60s ...

So do I. I have heard countless live recordings and some have been
brilliant without sounding fantastic. I even gave you an example
(Admitedly from the late '70s) which was an analogue recording.

     ... aid of a GOOD sound man,mixer etc ...

Not everyone has access to the best. Good cheap digital recording
would give bands a better starting point on which to base a live
    album.

The Bottom Line: I think, if you check, that the issue is one of
sound quality, not musical or atmospheric quality. There are plenty
of reasons why a live recording can sound bad acoustically, most
can be solved with time, effort and money. Digital was offered as
a way of potentially improving acoustic quality without spending
vast sums. Nothing that a good sound-man can do will fix a lacklustre
    performance.

    Fair enough,however you continue later....

We're not talking 'garage tapes' here and if RUSH don't have access
to the best WHO does ?.

Basically if the group play their 'normal' set,the venue acoustics
good, good mixing and recording set-up and 'proper' remixing and
overdubbing(where necessary) in the studio afterwards their is no
excuse for a sub-standard 'live' recording. However if it's not up
to scratch then it should be 'canned' and start over again.Bet you
next time it will be right.

re .21 I think things have got a bit confused. My comment about
digital recording was aimed across the board, not as a cop-out for
bands who could and should do better. Rush SHOULD have done better
on 'Exit...', especially when compared to 'All the World's a Stage'.

Some bands deserve better than they can afford. There is a lot
of good music stuck on 'garage tapes' which is spoilt by the recording
quality. A good example of this is Haze, who play some fantastic
prog rock which at time can hardly be heard through the hiss, but
    the concert sound was fine.

This is a warning to anyone with Live CDs.

DON'T play live CDs late at night whilst lying down wearing headphones.
Your feet twitch, you start singing along, yell your head off when
the songs are announced, and generally act as you would at the gig.

This is bad for your health.

'How so?' I hear you ask.

I'm suprised the BAND's Last Waltz has only been mentioned once.
I think this 5/6 sided set is brilliant. Artists performing their
own material backed by the Band include such diverse people as Clapton,
Muddy Waters, Dr John, Niel Young, Joni Mitchell, Niel Diamond,
Dylan etc etc. The Band do many of their best numbers. Sound quality
(and overall arrangements) are brilliant. This is probably because
the concert was envisaged, performed and recorded as a full length film.

    Well worth the money.

A small album title confusion, the Dead album that you referred

My favourite live album has to be Shadows and Light by Joni Mitchell
even if just for the band line up:

    Guitar - Pat Metheney
    Keyboards - Lyle Mays
    Bass - Jaco Pastorius
    Sax - Michael Brecker
    Drums - Don Alias

What a line-up!! Its a real tribute to Joni that all the above gave
    time to tour with her.

Agreed, you WILL NOT get a better line up ANYWHERE. I wanted to
get a Joni album, didn't know which one until I read who was playing
on this album, glad they included the solo's.

This isn't a pukka album is it ?

I have a tape I made of the gig which was televised with simultaneous stereo
radio broadcast (the Who were the supporting act), unfortunately I didn't have
a video in those days (1979 - good grief that seems a long time ago).

Did someone make a bootleg record of this broadcast ? or records as it was
about 3+ hours long.

This album is the 3rd by these guys, and their last. The 2 guitar
players are a pair of the most technically precise players around.
The album is HEAVY, and HARD. If you are a guitar player then you
can truly appreciate this music. It's a rocker ...

Talking of bootleg tapes I was at Blackbush market and there was
a stall there selling what I guessed were bootleg recordings of
live concerts on cassettes. What is the quality like of these
recordings as a rule? They weren't expensive, but I'd like to think
I'd get some sound of the group before I part with my cash.

As a rule I DON'T like live albums (in fact on U2's Rattle &
Hum it took my a few days to realise why I loved some tracks and
hated others. The answer seemed to be that I liked the studio tracks
as a rule and disliked the live ones), but Wings Over America is
better than most other Wings albums I've heard, with the atmosphere
and excitment of the band playing live coming over well without
comprimising the sound quality. As someone said earlier, live albums
are all too often an excuse for duff quality.

Bootleg quality is completely variable. Take along a walkman and
listen to the tape first. This is what I usually do. The tapes
I have tend to be quite good quality, altho' not up to lp type standard
obviously. Some boots come directly from the mixing desk, and these
    are the best.

This I find this hard to understand, esp with a group like U2 that is
at it's best live (IMHO). Do you remember Bad at live aid, the live version of
A Sort of Homecoming & best of all Sunday, Bloody Sunday on the Rattle & Hum
video. I have never heard the like of the anger, sadness & spirit that was put
into the latter. For an Irishman, this is an incrediably moving rendition,
far far superior to the War version.

For other bands perhaps they perform better in the studio, but surely
not U2!

I guess it's just a case of each to his own. That's the way I feel
about the album and that's it. I didn't decide I didn't like the
live tracks, it just seems that the tracks I don't like are the
    live ones.

      My favourite Live Albums:

      Seconds Out - Genesis

A Show Of Hands - Rush
      Urk - The Nits
Live - Sting (Italian Bootleg Import)

I've seen a Live CD by a band called U.K.

This band features Bill Bruford on the drums (whom I know from his
works with Genesis, King Crimson and Yes). And there's Alan Holdsworth
on the guitar who has also played for Pierre Moerlens Gong.

Has anyone heard about this album? Which kind of music are on it.
      It is woth buying?

      Any comment will be appreciate.

The band UK had 3 albums :

UK (with Bruford on drums, Holdsworth on guitar, Eddie Jobson on
keyboards/violin, and John Wetton on bass/vocals)

Danger Money (with Wetton, Jobson and Terry Bozzio on drums)

Night by Nigh- LIVE (with Wetton, Jobson and Bozzio)

I personally love the 1st album, very progressive 70's rock, but the
last 2 don't thrill me that much. There is 1 song called 'Carrying No
Cross' from danger Money that is very hot though ........

I know about a Live Album by Al Stewart.
It is entitled "Indian Summer - Live" or so. I can't get it here in
Germany. Does anybody know, about a release of this album in England
or in America? And, is it still availible? ...and, is it also
      availible as a CD?

Any comment on this will be appreciate.

A second question is about Yes. I've seen the CD Box "Yesyears" at a
record store. It was quite expensive ($65 or 40 Pounds Sterling).
I've seen that there are a few non-released, remixed songs and live
versions on it. Has anybody got it by now? Is it worth buying?
I'm not sure if I will do, as I think it is a lot of money for a three
      CD Box.

      Thank you all,

      in expectation,

I forget the title but I think I saw the live Al Stewart release
you're asking about. Send me mail to discuss further.

As for Yes, I'm pretty sure it has been reviewed in RECORDS or
CD or one of the many music related conferences.
