36.2need dash pad for '69 LeMans...BTOVT::HOSKINGFri Jun 14 1991 12:4117
    Am restoring a '69 LeMans SPRINT 2dr. hardtop I bought new. 4 spd. of
    course. I need a good used dash pad, no cracks or other damage, from
    a car without air conditioning. Any color would be considered.
    Dash pad from Tempest, Custom-S, [2 door, 4door, even wagons] Lemans,
    or GTO will fit. drop me a line E-mail upseng::hosking, am in
    APO area 4 days a week & could look at what you have some evening.

    	And for those who think 6 cylinder cars are slugs, try this one
    with 3 weber 45DCOE carbs, headers, factory ram air IV dual
    exhaust system........[installed back in the good old days when all
    one had to do was order the parts from a local dealer....], and a
    hi-perf. head from a 230 c.i. block sitting on my 250....
    	Only drawback is the high price of 100 octane aviation gas these
    days.

    Bigger toys for bigger boys, right?

36.3Need 68 FBird grilleBRAHE::DISCHLERMon Jul 29 1991 11:044
    I need the right front plastic grille for a 68 Fbird. Mine has a small
    rectangular hole in it. If I can't get another grille cheap, then
    perhaps someone can recommend a "decoration" of some sort that looks
    like it's meant to be there even though it covers a hole.
36.4Try AmherstCRISTA::ROCHEMon Jul 29 1991 11:426
    I was at Amherst yesterday and saw a couple of grilles for 67-68
    'birds. No idea what the pricing was on them, since that wasn't what
    I was looking for. When I left, approx 12:30, they were still there
    so they may be available at the next one (Aug 25th). I was able to
    pick up a pair of '67 Firebird taillights, no cracks or scratches in
    the lenses and the chrome strips just needed a polish for $20.

36.6Front brake drum for 68 BirdDNEAST::GENESEO_PAULTue Oct 08 1991 10:433

    Seems to be a scarce item in my area....
36.7CRISTA::ROCHETue Oct 08 1991 11:526
    How soon do you need it? I'll be converting my '67 Firebird to discs
    as soon as I get the rotors and calipers and will have a complete
    drum brake set-up with freshly turned drums, new pads, wheels cylinders
    etc. available probably sometime in late November.

36.9A Rare Part neededCUJO::BROWNDave BrownWed Nov 06 1991 20:4312

    	I'm looking for a seemingly impossible to find part - a Pitman Arm
    for my '68 Firebird (Manual Steering, V8). Mine is a bit loose and I'd
    rather not have it come apart while doing 100+ MPH. I've checked
    everywhere I can think of and only found one lead - a place out of
    California called "Rare Parts" that will rebuild it for $125.00

    	The forging number is 9791825BGMT1 should anyone have one lying
    around somewhere.

    to get a pitman arm for a '65 Chevy II thru them after trying most of

    There are other companys that may be able to help you....

      H O Racing Products is the main one that comes to mind. They
    specilize in Pontiac high performance suspension parts.

    Also there is PST (performance suspension technologies)

    And Mr. Suspension......

    And Kanter Products.....                           F-body  Firebird

    H O racing specilizes in A-Bodies (complete front end rebuilds) and 70
    & up F-bodied cars (sway bars and springs). I'm thinking that some of
    the early A-Body stuff just might work. I'll scrounge up the numbers
    & adresses for these companies and post them (hopefully) tomorrow.

    	Re: -1

    	I gave them a call and they confirmed what I already suspected,
    they ARE dissimilar. Called a couple of other places including the one
    mentioned a couple of entries before that. The concensus is in:

    	o There are NONE available wether it be OEM, NOS, Replica, wrecking
    	  yard (at least in the Denver area) or any other source. In fact I
    	  challenge anyone to prove me wrong!

    	So, I took mine down to the local shop today that will send it to
    Rare Parts Inc. in CA for a rebuild for $125.00. Ouch! Better than
    ending up in the trees though! Felt like taking out a special insurance
    policy in it as I left it off...

    	Did get 'em to give me a receipt for it though...

36.16Try Bill's Bird'sCRISTA::ROCHETue Nov 12 1991 06:155
    Dave, One other place to try is Bill's Bird's in New York. I don't have
    the number but they advertise in most of the major rags. I was able to
    a harmonic balancer for my '67 when all other avenues failed ( I called
    20+ places before I finally found it). They usually have the obscure
    pieces that no one else carries.
36.17Got it!CUJO::BROWNDave BrownThu Nov 21 1991 19:569

    	Got my Pitman Arm and does it look good! The guys in CA did a good
    job on it. So now I'm set!

    	I am still convinced that this is the only route to take if one
    needs to get a 'new' pitman arm for a '68 bird - manual steering.

    	DaveZ
36.18CRISTA::ROCHEFri Nov 22 1991 05:498
    Dave,

      But why would you want manual steering? The amount of power it takes
    to have a power steering pump is minimul. Install a WS6 steering box
    in your '68 (I have one in my '67) and enjoy the ease of steering and
    2.25 turns lock to lock.

    Chris
36.19WS6??DNEAST::GENESEO_PAULFri Nov 22 1991 09:104
    -1 Whats a "WS6" steering box??? Is that a GM number?? Is this a used
    box and if so what kind of cost and work is involved?

    Paul_who_also_has_a_68_bird_with_manual_steering
36.20CRISTA::ROCHEFri Nov 22 1991 09:398
    The steering box came out of a "WS6" equipped Trans Am. The WS6 option
    made the car handle better (different spring rates, shock, sway bars
    and the quicker ratio steering box) than the base T/A. The WS6 steering
    box changed by lock to lock from somewhere around 4 to 2.25. Granted if
    your arm twitches you could easily end up pointed in a different
    direction.

    	I don't particularly *want* manual steering, its just what is in
    there now and I lack the capital (and motivation) to swap it out seeing
    as how my engine building project is into the $4K realm.

    	It works fine...

36.23CRISTA::ROCHETue Nov 26 1991 06:0931
    RE: .21

    Rich,

      I think the box is an '81 which is 2.5 turns lock to lock. Mated
    to the '67 p.s. pitman arm and different steering geometry of the
    '67 vs. the '81 got the lock to lock to a little less than 2.25. I
    also used a '75 ragjoint to connect the column to the steering box.
    A special pressure hose was made to tie the steering box and pump
    together.

    RE: 22

      Dave,

       What are you having done to your engine that is bringing the price
    into the $4K range? I am asking because I had the following done to
    my 400 Pontiac and it cost me a little over $1350 (15% jobber disc.);

    Heads: Milled, magnafluxed, shot blasted, 3 angle valve job, 8 intake
           valves.

    Shortblock: Magnafluxed, shot blasted, squared, crank polished, resize
                rods, balance assy(with clutch assy), bore 30 over, forged
                pistons, ARP rod bolts.

    Misc: Assemble shortblock, installed cam bearings, freeze plugs, Felpro
          gasket set.

    Short Answer: After a phone sweep of wrecking yards, your
    		  friend may have to look in Hemmings.

    Conjecture & Suggestion:

    	Does he need a long block, short block, or the whole thing with carbs,
    intake, and air cleaner? If he doesn't already have the tri-power
    induction system, he might consider getting a new car. The difference in
    price between a correct GTO and one with transplanted engine might be less
    than the cost of the parts, never mind the work.

    	An original `65 is for sale a couple of blocks away from me (Santa
    Clara, CA ) for an $8-9K asking price. It's in nice, if imperfect
    shape, and everything is there. Pretty, incorrect cars sell for
    nearly as much. Restoration costs make starting with a complete car
    much less expensive.

    						John

    	Why should we fall out of our chairs laughing? Guess I'm thick...

    	Anyway I had a 389 not 2 months ago, sold it for $135.00. They can
    still be found in wrecking yards in Colorado at least, don't know about
    the rest of the country. I know a guy in Tennessee that sells 398's to
    scrappers by the pound.

    	Why doesn't he consider a real engine like a 428 or 455?

        I'll look in some of my smoke signals and legend news letters and

    yesterday that has a correct stamped complete 389 for $3500. He's
    still looking. He's going to look at a long block today or tomorrow
    that he found ($150). Somehow this doesn't sound right to me, but
    it's his deal. Given how close it is to spring, I told him it
    might be better to take a trip to Hershey or Carlisle if he can't
    find a complete engine before then. Would that make sense?

    It seems that maybe i hit a sour note when looking for a hood,what i

    455 H.O motor that is sitting underneath it.
    Any info about this would be greatly helpfull e.g - sources,prices.

    The hood will be the hardest to find. I called one company that makes
    lots of different fiberglass parts looking for a hood for my '80
    Bonneville....no luck. These guys told me that it was doubtfull that
    anyone would have such a beast. Smaller models like LaMans
    yes...biggies such as the Bonny and GP...not so likely.

    They suggested making my own.

    I've thought about getting a hood out of a junker and cutting away
    everything but the mounting flanges, latch and edges and then just
    using some fiberglass "board" type stuff to fill the center (you could
    leave a spot for a scoop if needed).

    Trying to save some weight? I've got some other tricks I'm willing to

    Have you called Harwood? They make fiberglass hoods. You may have
    to buy a hood and then mate the fiberglass scoop of your choice onto
    that. That's if you want to go 100% fiberglass. I think there are
    another 2 sources for fiberglass hoods that I can readily find if
    harwood doens't make the hood.

    If you're after weight &/or looks. Remove your hood, remove the
    hood springs and take a cutting wheel to all the structural bracing
    on the back of the hood. Once you have all excess metal off your hood
    have the hood dipped into that solution that lightens metal (I don't
    have the procedures name handy at the moment. After the hoods been
    dipped, then stick on the fiberglass hood scoop of your choice. and
    pin the hood down on all 4 corners (and maybe pin it 4 times up front
    so it doesn't try and tear your hood off at speed).

    Making your own hood out of fibreglass is a simple enough process. One
    thing to keep in mind though is that the final hood is only as good as
    the one you take the mould off of - i.e. the initial gelcoat will
    "copy" every scratch, ding or whatever. So the easiest thing to do is
    do all the initial bodywork on the original hood, then make the mould
    and finally the hood. I made one years ago for my Road Runner and worked
    with a small fiberglass outfit and had them blow on the 'glass (beats
    laying it up by hand if you have that option). I later managed to get an
    order and sell one hood which broke me even on expenses. There are a
    number of places that can give you advice and may even do odd bits of
    labour if you so wish. Places that make truck caps are ideal.

    The basic flow is as follows:

    1- prep original hood
    2- wax original hood with mould release
    3- do step 2 again
    4- do step 2 again
    5- paint on the gelcoat
    6- lay on fine 'glass (valene) and let dry
    7- lightly sand (one coat won't stick to a previously dried coat due to
       the resin coatings)
    8- lay on courser mat (at least 2 layers - the more the better) lay
    them on continuously while wet.
    9- 'glass on a 2x4 framework for support
    10- pop the mould off the hood
    11- clean the mould then wax at least 3 times
    12- repeat all the steps used to make the mould
    13- hood "bracing" can be made out of virtually anything since it is
    the 'glass that gives the strength. Do NOT use styrofoan tho' as the
    resins promptly desolve it.

    Have fun.

    Mike:
          Do you have a phone number and address for Harwood? If you can
    also list the phone # and address for the other 2 sources.
    The answer to your question about going 100% fiberglass is "yes" if
    I can find somebody who makes one for the G.P.
     Weight is the number 1 thing to bring down as i have dropped off
    close to 500 lbs. so far but am looking for another 500 plus to come
    off,e.g (plexiglass windows,no heater,braces out of doors,no bumper
    weights on the inside,interior stripped of all not needed factory
    goodies) but allways have an ear open for suggestions!!!!!!

         Thanks for the speedy reply,will phone them in the morning and
    let everybody know what i find out. In reply to " be prepared to pay"
    that sounds very familar as i live in Canada and you pay through the
    teeth for anything high performance and Pontiac has to be one of the
    most dear. I was quoted up here with a price of over $ 1000 dollars
    for a make shift hood(not worth it here).

36.5867 Firebird radiator filler panel wantedCRISTA::ROCHEWed Mar 01 1995 06:1810
    Well I'm about 2 months away from finishing my 5 year restification
    of my '67 Firebird, just in time for the POCI Nationals at Loon Mt.
    I'm looking for the left radiator filler panel. As far as I know these
    only came on 67 and 68 400 and A.C. equipped cars, maybe even '69's.
    The fiberglass repros are junk so I returned the ones I purchased and
    was able to get a original steel right side, but no left. Most of the
    used parts dealers won't break up a pair.
