    I just heard from a friend about a yard in worcester,called Linders
    he said they have some old stuff.He picked up a door and fender for
    his 67 goat .I am going there this saturday I will post what I find.
    There very few yard left with old stuff in them .I am hoping to find
    some parts for a 1970 cuda.

         You might try Scotts in East Templeton for old Cuda parts.
    Last time I was there they had a few old Cudas and other assorted
    early Mopars.  Oh yeah I think one of the Cudas was a convertable.

    I found two decent yards practically in my backyard.  They are both
    located in Middleboro, MA (off 495 south)  One is Middleboro Auto
    Salvage.  It's huge, with a late model bias, but there is plenty of old
    interesting stuff hidden around the perimeter of the yard.  They are
    located on Route 28 just south of the Bridgewater/Middleboro line.
    The other yard is Walter Pittsley's Auto parts.  He's located on 
    Wareham street in Middleboro.  A smallish yard, he nonetheless has some
    interesting attractions, including a pile of taillight assemblies
    (see the General Wanted note) that is staggering in it's variety.  The
    guy you want at Pittsley's is Mike.  He's a young guy who has worked
    there for 15 years or so.  It seems the Old man Pittsley is truly
    indifferent to the old stuff, but Mike has been stripping usable parts
    off them and stashing them about the yard out of reach of the old man's
    crusher!  Mike also likes to take you on tours of the yard, pointing
    out the more interesting attractions.  Give them a call at (508)

    Did anyone else go to B&D in Shirley over the weekend pay $25 and
    take out alll you can carry?  This was the third year I went and 
    for the second time ( first year was a learning experience) I got
    a bit more than my moneys worth.  I picked up a pair of '70 highback
    buckets from a Stang convertable with three small rips in them betwwen
    the pair, a pair of alloy rims for my non muscle car, and many smaller
    items for the latter.
         There were quite a few pre '74 Mopars there with good parts on
    them Cudas, challengers, Chargers, and a few mid 60s and some 50s
    vehicles too.
         The Mustang buckets will evventually find a new home in my Torino.
    The other misc. stuff is already in use except for the rims which need
    new sneaks.

      I went there a couple of weeks ago to check the place out before
    paying $25.00 for nothing.  I could not find anything that was worth
    $25.00 so I never went back for the cash and carry.  Seems like late
    '60's and early 70's stuff is getting very rare around boneyards today.

              IT seems like a lot of the yards here in the northeast are
     scrapping alot of the stuff they have especially the older cars.
    Seeing people from all over the country read this file,Maybe some of
    you guys from other parts of the country would be willing to share what 
    you see?Is everyone turning there stuff in for scrap,or is it just here
    where the economy is really soft?

I was talking with one junkyard owner (Dufour's), and it seems that someone
(the state or towns) is TAXING them on all their cars!  Rather than pay taxes
on the slow movers (i.e. the old stuff) they're just crushing them.  He told
me expect that parts for anything older than '85 (!) to become very hard to
find soon.

I noticed that Scott's in Templeton got rid of a LOT of old stuff, too.

    I too have noticed this trend.  Webber's in Derry NH used to have 
    tons of older stuff, now the yard is practically empty.  HOWEVER,
    for those of you that live in the Northeast, I suggest the following:
    Cars and Parts of Yesterday in Limestone, Maine.  Limestone is in
    northern Maine, no, make that NORTHERN.  About 60 miles north of
    Houlton to be exact.  They have better than 5,000 cars over 80 acres.
    Most from the 40's-60's.  None of the cars are stacked up, they are all
    lined up nice as can be.  Very few Mom and Pop 4 doors, most of the
    cars are ragtops, coupes, sedan deliveries, 2 door wagons, etc.  My
    wife and I spent about 5 hours walking around until we both just
    overloaded. This yard was recently written up in Cars and Parts
    magazine but the article and photos DO NOT do this place justice. 
    Check it out, but plan for 1 days travel (from Boston) in each
    direction and allow at least 2 days to tour the place.  Send me mail
    for directions, phone number, etc.

    I plan to return to this yard sometime soon.  I think the best
    way to go would be rent a station wagon/minivan/etc with a few friends
    and split the cost of the rental and split the driving.  Any interested
    parties out there?  Even if you aren't looking to purchase parts, this
    place is great just for wandering, photos, etc.  So, if you are
    interested, send me mail.

    I just returned from Philadelphia and the city has an abundance
    of decent salvage yards.  They are clustered around the airport, 
    primarily on Essington and 61st streets.  Mike's Auto Salvage
    specializes in Muscle cars and special interest autos, though his
    prices are high (about the same as you could do through Hemmings) and
    his attitude is poor.  However, he does have the parts..  Ain't it
    always the case!

    Houston seems to be suffering from the common "Real estate is valuable,
    why should I keep the slow moving old stuff?" attitude common on the
    Rust-coast.  However, if you travel outside the city limits decent
    yards are common.  Rust diminishes (obviously) as you move West/North of
    Houston.  There seem to be plenty of great yards in the Austin area
    especially on Texas route 71 between Columbus and Austin.  North of
    Houston I found a place called Ford's Salvage that has lots of old
    stuff.  He even lends tools (when's the last time a yard in mass did
    that?)  It's on Texas 105 just east of Texas 75 in Conroe.  I bought a 
    really nice big block air-cleaner assembly, 4 speed pedal assembly,
    misc. Emblems and nice chrome, 2 taillight lenses and some emissions
    control parts for about $30.  Not bad.

    RE: .12, there is also an interesting yard about 30 miles from Dallas
    (in Alvarado, Tx) called Junky Johns, off of Highway 67. What's unusual
    about it (other than the cattle that occasionally walk through (watch
    the cow pies!) and the baby lamb in the office, is that its the only
    yard in the area with air cooled VW parts in any quantity. Great for
    sick kit car buffs.

    For what it's worth...my 2 cents.
    
    Living in Georgia for the past 7 years I have found many junkyards
    with early model, i.e. 1960's through 1980's, cars.  Seems that
    there are alot of the old high perf. cars still on the roads here.
    (Maybe it's because NASCAR racing is so big in the South, I don't
    know.)  Anyway, if you just drive around anywhere North of 
    Atlanta, say 20-30 miles North, you'll see many junkyards.  You'll
    have to get off the interstate(s) and look but they are there.

    
    Just returned from a week in California.  Visited a lot of salvage
    yards too.
    
    San Jose area has a bunch, but most cater to later models.  Also, due
    to high land values,  prices are higher than average.  
    
    o Pacific Auto Parts on south 10th st. is OK, ask for Alan.
    o Navarra Truck and Auto on Monterey st. is also good, but pricey.
    
    I noticed (but didn't stop) several promising looking yards in the 
    greater Fresno area, particularly on California Route 41 headed south
    from the city.

      Pacific Auto Parts sounds familiar.  Is that the place with the
    wodden fence around it in San Jose.  I went to (I think) that one a few
    years ago.  They did not have alot of stuff but what they had was
    absolutely rust free.

    Same place - I was looking for Big Block Ford smog parts and found 
    a few brackets, and one injector manifold.
    They also had some decent trim parts for my Cougar, but the price was

    Auto & Parts magazine has recently published a booklet on salvage yards
    across the country and their specialties.
    
    Also I've been tempted to carry out all I can but I like to go
    prepared.  I've got a Korean War frame pack with a shelf on which I can
    strap a box withf shelves and walk out with  100 lbs or more of stuff.
    That is, if they allow it.  Other than looking a bit foolish like a
    human pack mule  I like be original.  Otherwise I figure I'm good for 2
    R12 A/C compressors or 4, 100 ampere alternators.

    From what I have seen, you can not use a back-pack etc. I did see some
    people use a drive shaft to hang a pair of bucket seats and some wiring
    harness to hang small parts.

         "Usually" for an extra ten bucks you can "drag" what your able
    out. Just get as much as you think you could drag, pile it up by the 
    entrance, find a hood that you could possably use and pile it all on.
    Now tie a rope around the hood latch and drag it far enough outside
    to be out of eveyones way. Then carry the parts by hand to you ride
    'n' toss the hood on the plie last.
    
          Ofcourse the hood 'll get a little scratched, but just be
    praparred to paint it. BTW, I knoe some one who did this once and sold
    the hood for $40 two days later.

    Of course, all this presumes the yard has a "grab-a-thon" or some such
    promotion.  Most decent yards (those with a respectable inventory of
    special interest cars and parts) don't allow anything like this.  You
    pick your parts and the yardman prices them.  You then negotiate and
    pay, or walk if the price is too high..... I speak from experience
    having "yarded" in a sizable percentage of the 50 states as well as a
    few US territories and foreign nations!
    
    So, don't expect that every salvage yard allows you to take home a
    truckload of scarce parts for $25!

    Just heard on the way in that B and D's is having another Grab-a-thon
    this Sat. and Sun. This is the yard in Shirly, on Rt-2A, for $25
    anything you can carry out is yours. Has anyone been there lately, are
    there any older cars, and does anyone want to go?

    I've been a couple times John mostly for VW goods but last itme
    I went they had some older Fords. Aside from the duetch stuff I 
    grabbed a pair of 70 Mustang high back buckets from a convertible
    with only one two inch tear between the two. The key is to bring
    some rope (or cut some seat belts) to strap stuff on you. Last time
    I went I got the seats, a VW head, 2 VW alloys, many Fuel injectors,
    2 electric fans, and misc other small bits, definetly worth the $25 IMHO.
    Les see they had one 65ish Falcon, 2-3 pre 71 Mustangs, a couple 72+ 
    (Gran?) Torinos, and some early 60s and late 50s stuff in a back row. 
    The hot ticket would be for someone to head down there and let the rest 
    of us know whats in there before we pay $25 to get nothing. As long as you 
    go in there with an open mind (if you cant get what you need grab some
    stuff you could sell to get your cash back) you should be all set.BTW
    the first time I went htere was a lad that did indeed carry an engine
    out course it was a lil bitty 4 cylinder with an aluminum head. Oh 
    yeah last time if you gave them another $25 for a total of $50 they 
    let you use a shopping cart.

    I visited a great salvage yard in North Carolina last weekend.
    It's called Richards Auto Salvage and is ~50 miles north of
    Charlotte (near Asheboro) on NC 49.  The yard specializes in
    cars and trucks 1930-70, and the cars are laid out by make,model,
    and approximate age.  You need it?  He's got it!
    
    Cases in point:
    
    When's the last time you saw a `69 Cale Yarborough Cyclone Spoiler?
    He's got *FIVE*
    How about a `61 Ford Starliner?
    He's got at least *THREE*
    Falcons (Jim Koehler, you listening?)
    He's got at least *TWENTY* including panels,ragtops,sprints,Rancheros
    Studebaker Hawk?
    He's got at least *FOUR*
    
    Bottom line is the place is great.  Owners attitude is also top
    notch (he lent me a toolbox for cryin out loud!)

    the weekend too. I'm having my brother move a 61 Falcon to his farm for
    storage. Nice solid car....I traded a few greenbacks and a case of Bud

    There's a wild and wooly salvage yard located in the NJ Pine Barrens.
    It's called A&S Used Autoparts and it's located on NJ 520 (I think)
    somewhere near Pemberton Township.  Man, this place is a mess!  Cars 
    are piled haphazardly with no regard for make, model, or approximate 
    year.  LOTS of old stuff, especially older full size Fords like
    Galaxies, LTDs, etc.  Plan on spending a while looking.....
    
    
    I'd suggest calling directory assistance for the number and asking the
    yard for directions.  It's been a while and memory is fuzzy...

    Has anybody been to Steven's Junk Yard in Charlton, Mass., recently?
    I haven't been there since I lived in Oxford 15 years ago.  They used
    to have some very interesting cars that would make great hot rod
    projects.  I remember a '59 Ford retractable, Hudson Henry J, Nash
    Ambassador's, and alot of 1960's stuff down in the back.  I don't know
    if they ended up crushing alot of the older stuff or not.  I even
    remember a mid-fifties Caddy with 3-2's on the engine that looked like 
    it could be waxed up and entered in a show.  Their prices were always
    good and they didn't care if you just browsed around.

     There still there.....that '59 fairlaine (Starliner) retractable is
    still there...and the body is not bad....There are 3 mustangs...not
    worth nothing...patred out big time.  A few Nash's, basically he has
    not crushed anything yet......
    
       it is quit depessing seeing some junk cars that are in better
    condition than my present late model vehicles....Seems like back in the
    old days...if your Engine blew...They junked the car !  Stupid huh ?

    Last time I was there though it looked like a lot of the good

    The retractable is still there.  As a matter of fact, there's a '57 &
    a '59 there.  Some of the old stuff that Wayne mentioned is still
    there, but bodies & frames are pretty well shot after sitting in mud
    and hay for 20-30 years.  There's still some Hudson and Nash stuff,
    and a mid-fifties Caddy hearse that had been used to carry the
    'Midnighters' rock group, and '54 Kaiser, and lots more hidden in the
    woods.  Some of the stuff will be featured in Cars & Parts in some 
    upcoming issue.
    BTW -- Wayne, I thought I recognized your name ...

    I'm pretty sure I heard on the radio that B&D rt 2a in Shirley
    (near the old Mohawk club) is Having their $25 all you can carry
    this Saturday.  I've been before and definetly got $25 worth of
    items.   In the past they've had a wide range of years and good
    assortment of cars.  I might stop by this week and see if I can
    get a peek at whats in there. Just FYI

    no dragging, the stuff must be carried...or like I said you can rent
    a shopping cart from them for another $25...YMMV this is just the way

I'm sure this depends on the person running the place, but people have talked
their way into dragging out engine blocks on (damaged) hoods from these $25/
carry sales.  I'm sure you'd have to talk a good story to the yard folks, 
though.  Be prepared to negotiate.


I'd get a good weightlifter friend, take him along, and buy him a pizza 
afterward, making sure he carries out several hundred pounds in one pass ;-)

    There was a yard that did this in a city I used to live in. Deal
    was you dragged out as much as you could on the hood of a car pulled by
    old seat belts/shoulder harnesses. You had to pay up front too. This
    wasn't as easy as it sounds tho' since the yard was at the bottom of a
    gravel hill so you had to drag all your stuff uphill. The hill was
    gravel so the hood would slide easy enough but getting a foothold could
    be a bitch. Then, you'd usually end up losing some of your load so
    you'd have to stop and they try to get moving again. Also, it was one
    person per load OR as many people as you wanted but each had to pay $25!
    Finally, by the time most guys were done running around stripping off
    parts and were ready to haul the stuff out, they were exhausted and it
    was after noon and stinking hot - to hot to want to drag a few hundred
    pound load a few hundred feet UPHILL!
    
    The trick is: go during the week and stip off all the stuff you want.
    Lock it all in the trunk of one of the wrecks (keep the key!). Go back
    EARLY on saturday when it's still cool and haul all the stuff out. Just
    don't go so early as to make it obvious - in case they care!

    Anyone notice a new sign on rt 2e just before MT Elam rd.
    says something like Palmer Salvage yard used auto parts.
    I remember long ago when this was a working yard (late 60s)
    I also recall going there in the early 80s and it was not 
    a working yard.  Anyone been there I wonder if they have all
    kinds of parts for old cars or if someone cleaned it out and is
    starting another late model yard? anyone

      I did not see the retractable last time I was there, but I did not
    spend much time in the Ford section.  Contrary to what the last note
    said, the Rebel Machine is still there.  
    
    This place is great if you are into 50's and early 60's stuff.
    
    It is locate a few minutes from RT 20 in Charlton.  I would call for

	I guess I may have to say, "Never mind!"..... I looked up 
"Ugly" in my dictionary and there was a picture of a '57 Ford Retractable!
(Actually, it was in my Convertibles book).... But, this car is ugly, it
looks like something that Lassie's family would ride in. It didn't help
that the picture that I found was of a '57 with what appeared to be almost
OD green paint.

	And I do like the styling of most 50s cars.....
Fat chance a '59 is much better looking, huh?

    Most interesting car I saw at Stevens was a relatively complete Hudson
    Hornet (or Henry J?) from the early fifties.  It still had it's dual
    carb intake which made it quite the performer back in the fifties.
    Also saw a tri-carbed early fifties Caddy there that looked like it was
    brand new.  Never did find out why it was there.
