    The Broncos have yet to show that they can beat a good team.  They've
    shown that they can beat the lousy teams that having an 8-8 record
    the previous year put on your schedule.  I wouldn't order Superbowl

    it's about 4 weeks to early to be screaming SUPER BOWL, but, out
    of all the AFC teams, I'd say they have the best shot at making

    I am hard pressed to truly believe that Denver is the BEST in the
    AFC. Can anyone, besides KC who was on a terror till the Lighting
    Bolts short circuited them, beat the Bronco's in Mile Hi ?
    
    Cleveland, gained a lot of strength beating the Vikes Sunday but
    I don't think they have the depth to go all the way. 
    
    Houston, after a 61-7 trouncing these guys probably don't which
    way is up Glanville has a week to build confidence in a very suspect
    secondary. 
    
    Buffalo, should win the division but they should have done that
    4 weeks ago. Look for yet another letdown in the playoffs. 
    
    Raiders, Art Shell is way too conservative to pull victory from
    the jaws of defeat. His play calling is gonna put Bo in baseball
    from here on out. 
    
    Cincinnati, These team is on a roll, but will lose to the Vikes
    on a bizzare call.

    I know the Defense can't stop a 1st and goal from the 1 like the Giants

      Jeff,  you compared them to NFC teams not AFC....But anyway,  what a
    blow out Saturday!  The refs sucked!!  Granted it went the Broncos way, 
    especially on the Nattiel "standing up" fumble but the whistle blew
    play.   I thought Denver looked bad thru the first 1 1/2 quarters,  but
    the second have looked excellent!!!!  I hope they don't let up this
    weekend,  because we see what the chargers can do when motivated.
    
      I hope Reeves keeps "running up" the score at all times.  Does anyone
    have some stats???

    The Giants also beat the Vikes.  That puts them at 2-4 vs. good
    teams, its not great, but it says that they can compete, something
    0 for whatever doesn't.  You also see no Giants fans screaming

    	The Donks aren't "0 for whatever" against good teams.  They
    beat Buffalo, Washington, KC (twice; this is debatable that
    they're good but alot of people have been praising their play).
    Teams that may be playoff bound, that may not be considered
    good, that the Donks have beaten are the Raiders and Indy for
    example.  We can debate that the Donks should have beaten
    Philly just as you Jints fans can.  They played the Jints
    tough.
    
    	I would imagine there is at least ONE Giants fan
    screaming super bowl somewhere just as you have found one
    here.  Let him/her!  What's it hurt?

    I didn't count Washington as a good team for the Giants, so why
    should they be a good team for the Broncos?  KC is not a playoff
    team.  I may give you Buffalo, but they are at best a 9-7 team that
    will make the playoffs because they are the best team in the worst

    The last good team to come out of the AFC was the 1983 Raiders.
    For the last six years,the NFC runnerup  was the second best team in
    football and sometimes the NFC had the best three or four.
    
    What would Denver's record be against the Eagles or Giant's schedules?
    If Denver was in the NFC East:
    0-2 vs NY and Philly,sweep Dallas and Phoenix,split with the Skins.
    Lose to SF,LA and maybe NO. Probably lose to Minn and maybe beat Detroit
    or Chicago.
    
    In the mediocre AFC West they dominated,winning 6 of 7. The AFC
    East is an embarrassment and the Central has no outstanding teams.
    So like Minnesota did in the weak NFC of the late 70's Denver is
    the AFC's best and will continue to make Super Bowls and get blown
    out. 
    
    These things are cyclical and will change soon.

Bruce, the Broncos have the sencond best record in football right now.  They
lost four games, each by less than a TD.  Any one of those games could have
gone the other way.   

The Broncos also have the best defense against points in the NFL.  That is
a pretty important stat whether you like it or not.  This team has turned 
a whole bunch around, and they could very well beat any team in the league
on any given weekend.  With home field advantage, they just may find themselves
in New Orleans on Jan 28.  

By contrast, the 49ers have the best record in football.  But the have lost
their only two games this year at home.....Home field advantage might not be
such a good thing for them during the playoffs...:-)  

At this point in time no team is gauranteed a place on the field on Jan 28.

I do think that the Broncos match up pretty well with the 9ers, though.  It 
would be a fun game to watch.....

    The only home playoff loss I can recall was a Wild Card affair with
    the Steelers.  It was Elway's first apperance in the playoffs and
    he pulled a hamstring or something like that.  The trainers tied some
    rediculous looking support strap around his thigh and butt area to
    keep him in the game. What it signaled to the Steeler D was 'I'm hurt
    you can tee off on me' and that they did. With their 1 player and 1
    demension offense, the fate of the game was quickly decided. 
    
    Until this past weekend, I didn't put a great deal of faith in the
    Broncos making it back to the bowl this season. Now it is becoming 
    more difficult to see them not going back. This bowl could be theirs
    by default.  The Broncos and the entire rest of the AFC are already
    7 point underdogs!  As long as we're going to get blown out (again),
    let's have some fun.

    Sunday, because if you're living in the past, you might as well

    I'm sure glad the Broncs allow us fans to live for today.  Maybe

    Big Al would love it if his boys just got close again.  I'm sure
    the Davis and SHell families will get together this January to watch 
    their second favorite team beat up on the AFC at Mile-Hi.  Maybe

	Since Dan Reaves has been the Head coach of the Broncos, Denver

	Also, I don't happen to have the detail of either Denver OR the
	whole league, but Denver has won it's division more than once
	in the 80s and won it at least once in the 70s.

	They also have won the Conference twice in the 80s and once in
	the 70s.


	Mr. Hendry, I'm sure that you have access to some of the inane
	information that these people are asking for.  Could we impose

Dan "Collie Man" Reeves taking over, the Broncs do in fact have the
best record in football.

Of course all the games against Loyala-Mary Mount, St Ignacious, and

    Walsh coached longer than Gibbs. It seems to me that Ditka should
    have a pretty impressive total for that time frame as well. I only

    while the 1989/1990 World Champion Broncos will be forging

    Here we go again with the annual ProBowl slight, rookie of the 
    year controversy and coach of the year debates.  Recognition is
    important to be sure, but it's wining that means more than
    any award or honor.  Just guessing but, probably half or more of 
    the selected players to the Pro-Bowl would trade it right now for 
    a win this weekend.  
    
    Denver finishes their surprising season in San Diego. The game's 
    only real impact will be a psychological boost to the winner.
    The Chargers are out and the Broncos are in and nothing will change
    that.  This one they play for the books and a mesure of bragging 
    rights.   The Broncos won't play again untill January 6th or 7th
    against (__________).

	It looks like you have been proven WRONG again, not that I 
doubted that you would attempt to enter false or incomplete stats to
make your (wrong) point.  

	The stats are, however very impressive for the raiders, but
this little history session does serve to highlight one thing, the
raiders and mostly thier fans do have a tendancy to "live in the past".

	They ain't done nothin' lately......except lose, that is.

    This is too much! The donks, their coaching staff, the media, and their
    fans once again whine about why wasn't half of our team selected to the
    Pro Bowl? Short memories, I guess. Most of the games they won we heard
    comments from the above group like, "It wasn't pretty", "They looked
    bad but a win is a win" etc. But now all of the sudden through
    metamorphosis, I surmise, they are ladden with All-Pros. The fans
    complain weekly about Reeves "stupid" play calling. Now all of a sudden
    he is Coach of the Year. I will give you Bobby Humphrey as a good shot
    at AFC Rookie of the Year. It's between him and, whathisface, the KC
    linebacker.

Hoot, the complaining is almost ALL about defensive players being slighted.
The only exceptions to that are Bobbie Humphries and Vance Johnson.  

The Defense is THE BEST IN THE NFL AGAINST SCORING!!!! that is the MOST
IMPORTANT stat that a defense can produce.  It is also in the top 5 in the
league in the three other categories that are measured, total yardage,
rushing yardage and passing yardage. That kind of defense deserves a bit
more representation than it has gotten in the Pro Bowl.  It certainly
deserves it if "Howie 'I played two games well' Long" deserves a spot.

I personaly don't think that Vance deserves a pro bowl spot.  He is among the
top 5 or six Wide outs in the AFC, but not the top 4.  He HAS had the best
year of his career, but that alone doesn't qualify for the Pro Bowl.

Bobby Humphries probably deserves the Pro Bowl, though.  His numbers are
amazing, considering that he plays on a team that hasn't had a running back
have 5 100 yard games since 1974 or earlier.

On Defense Simon Fletcher and Steve Atwater at a minimum deserved to be
in the Pro Bowl.

However, After the Broncos win the Super Bowl, next year we will place
AT LEAST 6 people in the Pro Bowl next year.

    Out of curiosity Ed, who would you have Humphrey and Fletcher bump for
    a Pro Bowl nod? What about Eric Metcalf? He leads all rookies in
    receptions with 52, averages over 23 yards on KO returns and has over
    600 yards rushing. It appears that he is the better all-around player
    between the two.

    I don't have any real problem with the Pro Bowl selections. Every
    year there are some that make it and shouldn't and some that don't
    and should. Genereally speaking when a team does well in what should
    have been a so-so type season, the awards and honors catch up the 
    following year.

    Sunday Denver finishes the regular season vs a very loose San Diego
    Charger team. Denver has to win this game to help prepare for the
    playoffs in January. I see a very conservative game plan by Reeves with
    Humphrey/Winder running the ball 30 times. The plan is to control the
    clock and put enough points on the board to win the game. 
    
    The Chargers are playing their Superbowl and would like nothing better
    than beating Denver. I see a free and reckless game played by Tolliver
    and Anthony Miller.

    range passes too many times for my liking.  Making a 
    receiver dive for the ball takes away a possible good run

    It was my understanding that Denver's first winning season ever was
    in 1976.  According to you, they're about even.  Whatever.

    The Charger/Bronco game had some interesting side points:
    
    Point #1:  This loss to the Chargers will probably propel the 
    	       Broncos all the way to the Super Bowl.  I think Reeves
    	       will use it to point out to the players that they're not
    	       invincible.
    
    Point #2:  The Broncos have not allowed a passer to have a 300 yard
    	       day all season.  Billy Joe Tolliver was over 300 yards.
    
    Point #3:  The Broncos, with an AFC leading 48 sacks, got 0 against the
    	       Chargers, while the Chargers registered 7 against the
    	       Broncos and now are tied with Denver with 48 sacks.  Lee
    	       Williams and Leslie O'Neal rank 1, 2, in the conference for
    	       sacks, followed by Bruce Smith and then Simon Fletcher.  
    
    Point #4:  The Broncos barely made 200 yards of net offense 
    	       (206 to be exact).  The Chargers had almost 400 (387).

    Looks tough for Denver in the playoffs, Houston is the likely first  
    opponent and with there terrible record away and on grass this looks 
    to be a very boring game unless single minded Dan Reeves can get up 
    some confidence to run some type of play action game plan.

      The Broncos didn't have the motivation to win.  With what, 5 ints,
    and they still can't produce some big points on that.   The offense
    better get to looking better,  which I think they will.  Was Perry ever

    the soilers will be the team,  and I think Denver will shut glanville

    That was no more than another practice day for the team.  Reeves 
    accomplished his goal of no major injuries, and he probably will
    use the sluggish performance to motivate the team.
    I wonder if Pitt can upset 'Gland'ville next SUNDAY.  
    I actually hope Houston wins, because they are such dogs on the road
    and they are an easier team to get up for.  Pitt has shown in the past
    that they can sneak up on people in the playoffs.

    Every Broncos loss since the Raiders game has been because they
    were not motivated.  Will they be able to get motivated for a playoff

    I have to agree with Bruce.  I didn't see the 49'ers laying down
    after they clinched their division.  IMO, you're supposed to play
    to win.  They may get into a game in the playoffs where they have
    to come from behind, but, since they haven't been playing to win
    since they clinched, they might have a tough time because of their
    uninspired play the last few weeks.  The team needs to stay sharp
    mentally as well as physically.  You don't just flip a magical
    switch and start playing good ball.

    judging from the conference they are in I have to believe that it
    is true that they will win it.  Overall in the NFL I believe that
    Denver falls somewhere around 7th behind San Francisco, LA Rams, NY
    Giants, Minnesota and Washington.  It is a shame that the conferences
    are so lopsided.  I have to rate the Philadelphia-LA Rams wildcard 
    game as a better match than the afc championship game, already,
    not to mention the nfc division and championship games.

    I'll agree that the AFC as a whole is running in the middle of the pack
    vs the NFC. But in 1-2 years of Plan B free agency I see a very

    Sunday performance.  7 sack is WAY to many.  It does show how good

    	a tougher conference.

    Denver beat San Francisco in overtime last year at Candlestick, 16-13.
    Don't know about other years.                   
    
    As far as this year, the 49ers have stayed sharp even after clinching
    home field, while the Broncos appear to have had a letdown of late. 
    I'd definitely have to go with the 49ers if it comes down to a
    Denver-SF super bowl (which it very well might).

Personally, I think S.F. is the better team as well, although I'm a Donk fan. I
don't like the way Denver played the last couple of games. S.F. had their Home
Field Advantage locked up, also. But they still went out and played like
winners. Denver looked like crap.

	If both teams were to end up in the S.B., the edge should definitely
belong to S.F.; but I wouldn't bet that game. Denver has always  been like a
damned college team. When they get themselves all fired up (and one or two
lucky plays can do it), there is NOBODY who can beat them. But they are just as
likely to play like Dallas.

    of "look who they played, head to head results, history, and 
    other assorted boola, boola".  We Denver fans look forward to
    playing anybody, so, please don't speak for us.  You talk
    about Cleveland being on a roll by beating two PLAYOFF teams,
    but, then a few lines later, you say Houston stinks.  If Houston
    is that bad, then I guess Cleveland's win over them didn't prove

    I agree with Mike Childs on this one. Noll is the AFC CotY. Reeves had
    considerably more talent than Noll, and everyone left the Steelers for
    dead after the first two blowouts.

    I agree with JoJ, Noll or Shottenheimer would have been a better
    choice.  I don't buy this look how the team improved over last year
    bs, the team only won 2 more games than last year, playing a much
    weaker schedule.   Certainly Noll and Shottenheimer's teams improved
    much more.
         
    I also don't think the NFC choice was the best.  GB led the NFL
    by far in signing plan B free agents with 11 and had an incredibly 
    easy schedule.

    Reeves doesn't deserve the CoTY, after a 3 out of 4 slide in Dec. 
    But the UPI season poll said that Denver wouldn't finish higher than
    3rd in the AFC west. Also the BEST record in the AFC. 
    
    

    PittsburgH was considered the dormat after two games. They then went to
    1-3 before peenching their cheeks and winning some games. Plus, they
    come from a division that sent three teams to the playoffs and the
    fourth team in that division was better than all the teams in the Donks
    division.
    
    Reeves did a good job, but the Noll did a better one.

 Clay, you stated my point, exactly.  Reeves screwed up the Broncos
    last year, fixes the mistakes he made last year, and gets called
    coach of the year?  Like you say, they are rewarding mediocrity.
    Shottenheimer inherited a team that had a mediocre record and turned
    things around.  Like you said, he deserves COTY.  Maybe Shell, too. 

    Shottenhiemer took over a team that was a playoff WC before the strike
    year and added nothing new. All Marty did was re-organize the Chiefs
    into a team again.

    Infante got NFC CoY over Seifert.  I do think you overlooked Seifert's
    job, though.  He became only the second coach in history to improve
    a team's record after a SB victory (Noll is the other).  He improved
    the teams record by 2 games with a much more difficult schedule
    than last year's.  He also had several all pros sit out games with
    injuries this year (Michael Carter, Lott, Montana, Eric Wright) and
    has had a ton of other injuries (something a lot of people are
    overlooking on this 49er team).  Had Seifert won NFC CoY, he would
    not have ripped anyone off.

    I know that the Donks have rebuilt and have some good young talent
    like Atwater and Humphries and may indeed be close to the age of the
    steelers over all. But lets focus on the skill posistions as I was
    and you have guys like Elway, the Amigos, Winder, Kay etc offensively,
    Meklenburg, Smith and a few other defensively.
    
    Lipps offensively is the only guy I can think of they may have playoff
    experience for the Steelers amoungst the starters.....
    
    true It has been alot longer for them to be in the playoffs than the
    Donks which has something to do with it too....
    
    Still say Noll had to comeback from alot farther than Reeves and of

	Reaves deseserves it. Period.  He rebuilt the team and over half
	the coaching staff.  Added 17 new players.  That is about 38% of
	the team.  He then took his team to the BEST record in the AFC.
	And all this after missing the playoffs the year before.  Yea,
	they were 1-3 in the last four, but never blown out, even with
	mostly second string players against San Diego.

	Noll deserves runner up.  Nothing more, nothing less.  If it was
	Coach of the last 12 games, maybe....but it isn't.  He got completly
	torn apart the first 2 games.  Granted, he managed to pull the Steelers
	back together in impressive fashion.  But after losing those first 
	by 90+ to 3????.... No way.

    I beleive only Woodruff, Long, Lipps and Ilkin are left from the
    '84 playoff team. Woodruf is from the '79 superbowl team.

Even though the Steelers should not have made the playoffs (look what
it took for them to make the playoffs), I've got this uneasy feeling
that they're going to give the Denver all it can handle.  Reeves said
last night that he was concerned about the team being motivated for the
game.  IMHO, this kind of game relies heavily on the coaching staff and
how they prepare their team for this type of game (heavily favored, at
home, beat 'em once already), and I see this as one of Reeves biggest
drawbacks as a coach.

	I don't think the availability of tickets is an indication that the
fans think Denver will romp over the Steelers. I had heard nothing about the
avaiability of tickets until I saw today's paper. And they are making a big
deal that there are unsold tickets. People are so used to Donk games being sold
out (every game since back in the sixties except for a coulpe of strike games)
that it never occurred to them that there would be tickets available.

    	Out of the Steeler's 11 draft picks this year, 10 ended up making
    the team.  Last year, at least 5 or 6 made it.  As stated earlier,
    Woodruff is the oldest steeler vet at 10 years of service.  I think
    the Steeler's are the youngest team in the league but I could be
    wrong.  Anyway, what's the big deal??  The Steeler's have a very
    young team that is just starting to come together.  They have nothing
    to lose, and everything to gain.  As long as they don't turn the
    ball over, they have an excellent chance in Denver.
    
    	As for COTY, Noll doesn't want it, so Reeves can have it.  Noll
    has stated many, many times that COTY is not his style.  Noll is
    a different kind of guy and true, not many players like him, but
    he does believe that the players deserve the attention and not the
    coach.  I have stated that it's kinda strange that a guy who took
    the worst team ever in the NFL to 4 superbowl titles in 6 years
    was never COTY.

    Steven, last week's game was indoors and the Steelers in an effort to
    workout in that atomosphere (ie. crowd noise no weather conditions)
    worked out in a local field house which was not as big as a normal
    football field. So it is an added hinderance to his preperation. Still
    though he is a Pro and should have hit a few. As it turned out they
    didn't need it anyways and hopefully he has save them long bombs
    for this sunday................

 I've been using it so often that my little mouse's ball is becoming quite warn 
out. Lately I've been using it almost every note. You know what jack ? Every 
time I hit next unseen I get garbage or soapbox spewing out onto my screen.
 I thought this was sports not garbage. Some of the personal attacks that have
been going on here lately are getting out of control. Telling people that they

    Before I start, I'm sure you're all aware that I'm as guilty
    the next guy when it comes to entering junk notes.  Usually it
    is in response to an antogonistic note.  I know, I know, turn
    the other cheek.......
    
    The sports note world according to Clay:
    
    The SPORTS note is sort of like the corner bar where people with
    different allegiances gather to talk about their favorite team
    or sport.  Invariably, rivalries arise.  Debates ensue sometimes
    to the point where even a guy's manlihood is questioned (usually
    in fun).  The point is, that this is to be expected when people
    of differing opinions gather.  It's natural!  I find most of
    junk notes amusing.  They lighten up an otherwise serious day
    at work.
    
    I don't see the SPORTS note changing from it's current personality.
    All the ingredients are there for debates, sometimes heated, to
    take place.  A few folks complain, things calm down for a while,
    then somebody will enter a reply that criticizes someone's favorite
    team or player and the whole cycle starts over again.  The way I
    see it, and don't get me wrong Jeff Needle, but maybe you should
    abstain from the SPORTS note if the junk notes upset you as much
    as it appears.  The reason I say abstain is that I don't think
    you can control it.  It's gonna happen over and over as long as
    people have different opinions.  
    
    The SPORTS note has a unique atmosphere that I enjoy.  I don't
    mind hitting next unseen.

    me, I think you are full of shit (apparently that is now an acceptable
    phrase in here, a moderator used it). Most of what I put in here is
    info or defending myself or said info from attacks. If you aren't

     I think you have stumbled on to something there.  Although I 
    now have converted to the Kinder&Gentler(tm) side of this
    issue it is very obvious that Metz has a slight case of "Foot

    at this chance to RIP METZ TO SHREADS but I wouldn't be suprised
    is some of the other "Animals" in the conference had a field day.

No, I won't abstain from SPORTS but thanks for the suggestion.  You see, I'm a
moderator and have been for a couple of years.  So I get the hate mail from
people when the few obnoxious noters take over the file.  In this case, the
very vocal minority are pissing off the vast majority.  So it merits
discussion.  It doesn't make me particularly happy to read this file at 6:30
and then find 65 more unseen notes at midnight.  And then I find out they're
just more crap.

Why can't you folks just take a hint?  The time is ripe for a Broncos file
where you can all insult each other in your own private sandbox without forcing
this drivel down hundreds of others throats.

As for the injury report (if you don't mind a serious note - I'll try and throw
in something offensive near the end):


DENVER BRONCOS - *Starting strong safety Dennis Smith (neck),
reserve wide receiver Ricky Nattiel (knee) and reserve cornerback
Mark Haynes (ankle) missed the Chargers' game but are expected to
be available for Sunday's game versus Pittsburgh. Reserve defensive

    HAHAHAHAHAHA(tm)!  This slays me!  Less than six months ago, there was
    a very similar circumstance here in SPORTS where one single noter (no
    name needed, no offense intended!) started a junk note/r purge movement
    and actually got many of the guilty (me included) to reform somewhat!
    Now, I'm on the "outside looking in", and am finding this quite
    amusing, especially the last dozen or so (kinder/gentler) junk notes!
    
    Anyway, Steven hit it exactly right, I think.  The "crap" is easily
    tolerable if it's kept to one note only, 2 max.  Especially since the
    range of active notes lately is small, seeing the very same "crap" in 4
    notes magnifies the whole thing.
    
    And this is not a knock on you particular junk noters that caused this
    latest purge movement, 'cause far be it from me, Hawk John Szabo, Junk
    Noters Anonymous President and Treasurer, to pass judgement, just gas!

Why doesn't everyone stop for a second, take a deep breath, and get real.

First off, according to the last RossIndex(tm), I am the greatest
Junk noter of all time.  That, I feel, gives me some authority to
speak.

A)  I like the concept of SPORTS as your local tavern.  However, I do
    feel that when the bartender/bouncer (ie. moderator) says to cool
    it (i.e. nothing personal but this example:  "Arf Arf Oilers suck"
    400 times merits a cool-it) then we should cool it.

B)  On the other hand, I'm am not satisified with the new moderator
    structure.  In the old file, Jeff and MC were moderators.  There
    were few enough moderators that a policy statement was not need,
    nor a statement of interpretation of policy.  
	
    Moderators are like referees.  They are there to enforce the rules,
    but have some leeway in the how tight or how loose the rules will
    be.  

    At this point in time we have at least 7 moderators (I didn't count
    before editing this reply).  And I feel that we have 7 different 
    interpretations of the rules.

    Some want it tight, with no junk at all (kind of like the guy on the
    corner of the bar who wants to commiserate by himself about his wife
    leaving him, and he doesn't want to hear the guys down the bar arguing
    about whether or not Tony Eason wears Leggs or Haines...), and others
    are willing to let a lot of stuff go.



What am I getting at?  A two-point plan:

	1) The noters take a little more care with the amount of
           Junk noting that goes on.  While sending the same drivel
           through mail is probably just as much of an abuse of the e-net
           at least a lot of folks in here won't get pissed off.

       	2) The moderators should get together, decide what they are going
           to do in terms of policy, and not deviate from that on a 
           personal basis.  Communication among moderators is key (at least
           that's what I've found in conferences that I moderate with
           multiple moderators).


Finally, no personal shots are intended here.  Hopefully I've highlighted
the relevant points, and we can all seek a level where everyone is 
satisified....

    The 68 Mexico city olympics were at about 6000 ft. and there was a long
    jump recorded that probably occurred because of thin air.
     
    In Mile Hi the air is filthy and thin after a single 100yd wind sprint
    most football type of atheletes have a burn in the back of their throat
    that just won't stop until a mask of pure oxygen is put on. 
    
    If Dan Reeves plays his game plan against a better team ala (Giants)
    they are completely worn out after 3 quarters.

    First of all - perhaps a playoff note, one for the NFC and AFC,
    should have been started, and hopefully, folks could have had the
    pissing contests there.  
    
    Second - every year at this time this happens - the NFL playoffs
    cause more emotional outbursts then the WOrld Series, the Stanley
    Cup, the 88 Olympics, and usually the NBA finals.  By Feb 1, the
    file will really quiet down.  Always happens.
    
    But I agree, the same *exact* notes are usually found in the Browns,
    the  Oilers, the Broncos notes.

	Sometimes people forget that this file gets read by many more people
then the few who enter notes and replys.  I think back and can't
believe some of the downright stupid things people have entered.  I'm 
not realy talking about junk noting here, most of them were offensive in 
some way.  'Dirty' jokes, lewd comments, insulting remarks, and slanderous 
statements, that don't belong in a public forum.  Someone enters something
offensive then someone sends hate mail to the moderator.  He/She has to delete 
the note, or try to work out some issue between noters, or some other task 
that he/she hates doing.  Sometimes you feel the complaint isn't legitimate, 
and you try to express that to complaintant, hoping that others (personel, 
your manager, the other employes' manager) will think the same.  Any ways 
'nuff ramblin. Just ask yourself this when you enter a note - 

Would I post this on the bulletin board in the lobby?   If you wouldn't then 
you should probably not enter it.  Sports (like most notesfiles) has that kind 
of exposure, to that broad an audience.

    First of all, I agree with ClayWad's comments. Geez, if me, Clay, Hoot,

    antagonistic regarding the "facist moderators". It doesn't mean you
    can't have fun, or harrass someone. But, realistically, how many
    "Browns suck, Donks suck, Oilers suck, Steelers suck" notes do we need.
    In fack(tm), why not just say the AFC Central sucks and be done with
    it.
    
    Third, to the other moderators....maybe we could just let some of this
    stuff slide. I started the Noriega stuff...I know it doesn't belong in
    sports, so I stopped. I was just kidding around with my friend, Dan. He
    knows where I'm coming from and I know where he's coming from. No big
    deal. Just having some fun. I think if we can just let everyone have
    some fun, everything will be alright. That is, let's not overreact over
    some of the comments made by some of the noters.
    
    To be honest, if the Jets were in the playoffs I'd probably be doing
    some serious junk noting ala the browns/donk/oiler/steeler fans.
    
    I guess all I'm saying is that the moderators and the junk noters both
    need to give each other a little breathing room. We don't want to make
    this conference too restrictive in terms of what kind of notes you can
    put in, and , we don't want it filled with junk either. How bout both
    the moderators and the junk noters be just a little more understanding
    of each other and I think we'll all get along just fine.

I guess what I was getting at is that this file is a microcosm of
life itself.  The one word that applies to every kind of society
is *compromise*.  There are days when I just feel like flying off
the handle and interspersing the f word liberally into my speech.
There are days when I get so fed up with some of the motorists on 
the way to work that if I had an M60 I could rack up a high body
count.

Fortunately, in our society things like that are frowned upon, so
I have to compromise and deny my basest animal instincts.

In here, we do, as has been said previously, have to be careful.
We are *lucky* to have this forum.  The bulletin board example
is really a good yardstick...

So, I hope I haven't given anyone the impression that I was singling
them out, and I do feel that we have a GREAT forum here, let's keep
it GREAT.

    Obviously, the people who are in here alot know when others are just
    kidding around.  The problems come when people who aren't regular
    readers get a dose of some of this stuff; whether or not it is directed
    at them specifically.
    
    Here is another suggestion:  If you want to just "yank someone's
    chain", or discuss something with someone in particular, just type SEND
    at the NOTES> prompt and it will put you into MAIL.  Keep the
    notesfiles to stuff everyone is interested in, and use MAIL for what
    should be one-on-one matters.

Well, Hello everyone.

	I haven't been noting as much as I'd like.... but I see it's that time
of year again.

	Some of the suggestions seem pretty reasonable, such as thinking of
this notesfile as a community bulletin board. Some of the suggestions are less
so, such as only putting in notes which would interest everyone. I was a little
surprised to see the regular noters in 4 or 5 football notes singled out as the
culprits when it comes to junk noting. I've exchanged a few barbs with one or
another of `the enemy' on occasion, but I don't really try to make a habit of
it. Is it possible that some people have stiffened appendages for the Donks,
Browns.. etc.?

	The reason I ask, is that it seems that the majority of notes are of
the same stripe. Every note isn't going to appeal to `everyone'; and there are
certainly a lot of `argument' and `ribbing' type notes that have nothing to do
with the Broncos: Jimmy Clang, the Bird Jihad, Sorryxcuse, Clemson Refs, Bobby
(where are all the chairs?) Knight, Dean (I could win a title if I really
WANTED to)  Smith, DEVILS, The Slasher's newest videos, Chainsaw's newest TV
cutie, Red Sox park effects, and the Yankme's Mr. Spleenbender, Jose (I got a
hunert phones in my bathroom) Canseco, Ricky (pass the mustard) Henderson.... I
could go on forever. The thing is, that stuff is fun! It's what THIS Notesfile
is all about!

	I think what is tightening some jaws, is not Junk Notes, per se...
because as has been mentioned, there's always Nexted Unseen. I suspect it's
because people don't WANT to Nexted Unseen. Most people kind of LIKE some junk
noting... poking a little fun, lightening up their day. What is locking jaws is
when the `you sip, he sips, they sip' crap goes on and on incessantly, back and
forth, over and over.

	I think that's the main gripe, and I think it's a valid complaint. I've
gotten carried away on occasion and contributed to the malady, but I resolve to
try and put a lid on it for the future.

	The reason I wanted to speak up, is that I think there's a real
possibility of people getting urinated and saying `okay, I'm outta here...
nobody wants to have fun'. I don't think that's the case, and I feel it will
only take a minor adjustment on anyone's part to get things back on track.

    for awhile, and just stumbled into a pile (40 or so) replies that
    have been written since I was last in here.
    
    JD had a valid point, in that this happens every year, doesn't really
    matter which teams are in the playoffs.  And, it does pretty much
    die away right after the SB.  And, every year someone takes offense
    and tries to change things.  Let's just face the fact that this
    is a truly cyclical occurrance.  It, too, shall pass.
    
    In the meantime, unwind a bit, put your feet up on the desk, and
    try to see the hilarity in many of these junknotes.  If you can't,
    then please don't get uptight over it.  Remember, this is SPORTS,
    and that's supposed to be a fun thing you do in you LEISURE.

Although I don't get into this conference as much as I once did (and
therefore have lots of unseen notes to read), it IS frustrating to
have to 'next unseen' through so many notes.  And the problem with
'NUing' is that you might miss some serious conversation about the
note you're reading.  As others have said, this usually happens this
time of year (regardless of who's in the playoffs) and will eventualy
die off, but for the occasional reader, it gets to be a real pain
in the ass.

I second the suggestion of creating a 'drivel' note...perhaps even
a football drivel, baseball drivel, etc.  That way we'd have the
best of both worlds: occasional readers could set drivel notes
permanently seen, but participants could drivel themselves to death!

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...

It looks like Gerald Perry is progressing faster than anticipated
from his ankle injury, and might even see some playing time.  Look
for the Steelers to give the Broncs all they can handle, but Reeves
is NOT letting them forget what happened the last time the Steelers
came to town for a playoff game.

    Perry sprained his ankel in practice last week. He is currently listed
    as "questionable". My opinion: he will start.
    
    There will be no black-out. Denver Ch. 4 bought the remaining 250 or so
    tickets. A good point was made in today's paper about this. Channel 4
    didn't buy the tickets just because they are such nice guys. If the
    game were blacked-out, Ch. 4 stood to lose out on allot of money from
    local sponsors. It was cheaper for them to buy the tickets and give
    them to employees and Boys Club type of organizations than lose all of
    that advertising money.

Well the Broncos pulled off yet another late win.  Have to tip my hat to the
Steelers and the way Brister played.  Save for the last minute fumble by Brister,
they played a pretty flawless game.

The offense played pretty well considering they were playing catch-up all game.
What a hit Elway took though.  I thought for sure he wasn't going to get up.

Can't say the same for the Denver defense though.  It's easy to understand the
Steelers surprisng Denver in the first-half, but why Denver didn't adjust after
half-time is a mystery.  I hope Phillips has the defense better prepared for the
Cleveland game...speaking of which...

Broncos-Browns III...should be another classic.  Neither one of the defense's
have played well lately so look for another high-scoring game.

    Hi Jack here I am bright and early and let me tell ya the crow sucks...
    The Donks to their credit got just enough big plays to earn the win...
    Of course I must cast some sourgrapes or it wouldn't be right? SOmebody
    got the penality stats? I know that the Steelers received atleast 10 to
    1 at one point. Why was it ok for all that movement at the goal line
    on the donks' first TD, yet everytime a Steeler even scratched himself
    they got flag for moving? Walsh's attemp to cover up the the blown call
    was feeble at best, a defensive lineman can move laterally before the
    ball is snap but the offensive lineman certainly can't. On the Worley
    fumble why no review? I never say the ball come out before he hit the
    ground. None of the reviews that I saw were conclusive enough to over
    rule the call but who knows? Maybe we get a guy in the booth with a
    soft spot for Pitt and he overturns it who knows, it has happen before?
    GreenBay|Chicago I I believe.... I know in my heart though had that
    been Bob Humphries he would have been called down on contact.
    
    What a shame they pushed your vaunted defense all over the field all
    day long if I was a denver fan I'd be worried.....although the Browns

      It wasn't the best lookin' win of the year,  but definitly one of the
    more exciting wins.  I swear,  being a Bronco fan takes years off your
    life with the up & down way of playing that this team always does.
    
      I give the Steelers credit,  I saw them walk all over the Bronc
    defense.  That was a site I didn't care to see.  They have to do a
    better job against the dawgs,  or they will be bit.
    
      What a hit on Elway!!  I'm sure he'll be in the whirlpool today.
    
      Actually,  I thought this was one of the better refed games I've seen
    yet.  Sure there are always "questionable" calls,  but there weren't as

    	The D got pushed around pretty bad.  That Hoge guy is great.

    an illegal procedure penalty, 5 yards automatic, no play. It was 3rd

    Denver took the first half in the Teef. Made some adjustments then took
    most of the second half on their butts. The Defense never pressured
    Bubby. The Offense had one play all day long that was a 30 yarder to
    Jackson, Johnson or Young. 
    
    I hope the team wakes up and smells the Dawg pound brewing the coffee.
    Because Denver has not played inspried football since the Seattle

    Yesterdays game was a GREAT win for the Broncos.  In FACK(tm)
    it put them in the AFC Championship game which is more than
    can be said for the Squealers.  Yea, the Broncos looked 
    sluggish but they were coming off a 2 week layoff.  The 
    offense showed signs of waking up and all i can say is I 
    would hate to be the Dawgs come next Sunday in Denver.

	The stupid Donks are turning me gray. They pulled it out.... somehow,
but it sure wasn't pretty. They came in losing 3 of their last 4 games, plus a
2 week layoff. They didn't look sharp, but they still had enough fire to hang
on to beat a team that had won 6 of their last 7, and was really fired up. But
I'll tell you what: `Great' teams don't lose 3 of their last 4, and then wallow
around trying to find the handle in a playoff game. Denver's a good team, but
no way, shape or form are they great.

	The upcoming game with the Brown's should be good. The Brown's looked
like they really wanted to choke Saturday, and did everything they could to
hand the game to Buffalo, but at the end, Buffalo wanted to lose it worse. In
all probability, the Brown's decided to wait and choke against Denver (no sense
fooling with tradition).

	From my point of view, I'd like to see the Donks pick up the intensity,
and start clicking. They should beat the Brown's by 2+ touchdowns. If they
don't, I'd just as soon they lose now. I'm tired of seeing Denver embarrassed
in Superbowls.

Any win is a good win... and I specifically stated that not only was it not a
great win, the Broncos are not a great team right now.

I DON'T expect the Donks to win by two plus touchdowns. I said I'd like to see
them pick up the intensity and start clicking. If they would put it all
together, they could beat the Browns by Two Plus touchdowns and give the NFC
Superbowl representative a real good game. If they are NOT going to put it all
together, I'd just as soon not see them in the Superbowl being embarrassed
again.

    Humphrey was tackled on the two, reached the ball to the one. The ball
    was spotted at the one. Third down and goal, Clarence Kay was WAY
    off-sides, result = Denver TD instead of third and goal from the 6. 
    Just before the half, Elway long to Natiel (?) to set-up a field goal.
    Personally, I thought the ball hit the ground. A replay was never
    shown. I don't ever remember a long play that sets up a score just
    before halftime not being shown again. Believe it or not the GT even
    said Natiel "appeared to have bobbled the ball".
    
    For Tim: A TE can move before the ball is snapped. He can not be moving
             when the ball is snapped. In this case it is a mute point
             anyway since Kay was across the line of scrimmage when the
             ball was snapped. Considering the fact that there are two line
             judges, one at each end of the line, and how far Kay was  
             offsides, I find it very hard to believe that neither one of 
             them saw it.

I was really concerned throughout the game.  The defense was playing POORLY,
to say the least, and the offense was miscueing at just the wrong time.

But they held together and scored when it really counted, and held when it
counted.  I only recall one big play on defense, and that was Simon Fletcher
batting the pass back to Bubby on second down at about 2:20 to go.  The 2
fumble recoveries were not that big of plays by the D, just taking advantage
of mistakes by Pittsburgh's O.

	Yeah, it looked like Kay moved.  He wasn't across the line, though.
BTW:  The tight end CAN move laterally, just not forward, before the snap of
the ball.  I think it was a missed call, though.  He seemed to be moving to 
his right.  Tha would mean that he HAD to be moving forward as well, because
the tackle was on his right.

	But it does get monotonous listening to you guys...

    The tight end can move to go in motion, but if you don't have enough
    guys on the line of scrimmage that is a penalty too. So it should
    have been a false start, illegal formation, or illegal motion, I
    don't think none of the above should have been a choice.

I only call them as I see them and it does get OLD week in and week out
having seen all the ref's calls go the Donk's ways... I watched a replay
of the game on the home VCr and beleave me, everything that was stated
in this note happened....   Also add another, Karl Mech. took 2 extras steps
and hit Bubby in the backfield, no call by the Ref's for a late hit. If
it would have been Mr. Ed the laundry would have flown.... I don't eben see
how the anoncers missed it... It was a late hit!!!!!
Will the Browns get a fare shake in Pile it High??? Will the late hit's,
head bobbing, movement get called???? Will have to see, but the only way
for the Browns to counteract this disgrace for ref's is to put them away
real early in the game!!!!

    because the Bronc D only gave up 23 points, not 30.  Actually,  both
    played rather lousy seeing how the opponents offense could move the

      I have to say that the Bronc "D" will show up this weekend as well. 
    This game will be the usual close one, no matter what the score ends up
    being.  Mack will be held under 100 yards, which means that the Clowns

    In terms of comparing the Browns vs. Broncs defense last weekend you
    really need to take into account the teams they played.  
    
    Bills: statistically near top in offense, mainly went with a
    passing attack, therefore, they scored quickly.
    
    Steelers: near bottom offensively.  Ran a ball control offense.  Scored 
    less, but also moved the ball almost every time they had it.  
    
    Add to that the fact the the Bills suprised the Browns by using a
    spread set from the get go (coaches were expecting the Bills to
    establish the run early), and you can understand the number of points 
    the Bills were able to put up.  
    
    I hope the Browns defense shows up this week.  If it does, no contest.

re: VCR tape

I borrowed it from a friend down at the fire station, he has most of the
Donk games on tape... Hey what an Idea!!! Maybe I'll go back thru all
their games a pick out the plays that didn't get a flag thrown on
them that should have been... Could make for a dam near 3 hr movie!!!!!
Then will tie up Big Gamey and make him watch it untill he admits that
they are the luckiest team in the NFL, with those rabbits feet in their
jock's and all......

Today's paper has Collie boy whinning about the 48 hr exception that was 
given to the Brown's....

The Air Academy said No to the Browns when they asked to use their
area's for workouts.... Now do you wonder why they asked for the exception!!!

			the player's request to replay it.  I believe
			a further request for replaying it could have

			Kay wasn't the only one that moved.  There
			was notable movement on both sides of the
			line before the snap.  Since a TE does have
			some lateral movement allowed and the defense
			isn't allowed any...you tell me who the call
			should have been against.

			Donks.  Obviously, mysterious calls always 
			give the Donks a win and nothing like that ever

    It was the TD where Humphrey ran up the middle to the two yard line and
    reached the ball to the one. It was spotted on the one. Then they ran
    up the middle for the TD. Braxton, I think. Walsh immediately said Kay
    was moving. Half of Pittsburgh's defense reacted to the motion. The
    replay proved it. It wasn't close. Kay was lined up as the left TE.

    
    Jill, please get a grip on yourself and a better understanding of the
    rules before barging in here in such a huff. The defense can move all
    it wants before the snap of the ball. It cannot cross into the netural
    zone before the snap, unless it jumps into the netural zone without
    making contact with an offensive player and getting bac on it's own
    side of the netural zone before the snap.
    
    the way I saw the play the defense moved laterally completely legit.
    Kay moved forward a No-No. he can move lateral before the snap but
    not forward and also once he put himself in a 3 point stance he
    can't move. 
    
    it just funny that the Steelers got called for movement between 5 to
    10 times during the game and the donks didn't when it meant a TD for
    them.
    
    no instant replay on the nittiel play because it obvious Bowlan's

    Yes, they did reply it and Walsh was the one who then noticed 
    movement on the side of the defense as well, made a comment 
    about Kay being allowed some movement, noted that he wasn't
    over the line of scrimmage and said it could have been called 
    either way.  Gee, if he was line up as the left TE, moved right,
    and after the replay Walsh said he wasn't over the line of scrimmage, 
    then he must have been moving laterally.  Hmmm....amazing!

    You are right, Steven. We, at home, can usually see the play better due
    to the quality of the cameras and the number of the angles they
    provide. Not to mention the slo-mo replays. How many people have to ask
    for the replay for it to happen? I'm not being a wise guy. I really
    don't know who all has the authority to ask for a replay. There is no
    question that Nattiel did not catch that ball cleanly. It was bobbled.
    Did it hit the ground? None of us can say because they did not show a
    replay. The only shot we received wasn't that close. You have to admit
    that it is highly irregular for the networks to not show a replay of a
    big play that sets up a score, in a playoff game no less.

    Walsh never said anything about moving laterally. Kay was on the line,
    in a 3-point stance. He cannot move, period, until the ball is snapped.
    Walsh's comments about the defense moving was regarding their reaction
    to Kay's movement. It was illegal procedure, cut and dry.

    Sports writer Bill Livingston of the Cleveland Plain Dealer calls
    Denver SoB's. Same old Broncos. If that's the case the Browns 
    are really just showing up to entertain. I agree with Jill that
    this is going to be a hostile crowd. Nobody has forgotten what
    the dawg pound did to the Broncos in Cleveland. Denver should have 
    a clear edge in the 'intangible' category.  The Browns think 
    they're in a revenge configuration but we have news for them.
    It is the Donks that are looking for revenge. The Browns or the
    officials will have to control the crowd in this one but I don't
    see that as a likely possibility.  It's no secret around the league
    what the fans mean to the Broncos at home.  We should be in the
    Super Bowl this month.  Big Orange! How sweet it is!

    In which case a. the donks could have been penalitized negating a TD,
    b. Pitt could have been flagged and the play good or nulified because
    it happen before the snap so they move the ball half the distance to
    the goal line and try again. I like the try again one cause as an anti

    This reminds me of a game I was at, in Cleveland Stadium...the

    and hit the ump with her purse...the game was called and forfitted.
    Police and hourses...I'll never forget it!  The thing was...it wasn't
    just one or two people...it was the whole stadium...except me, of

    sure of anything and if they would have made us replay the down or

    the local media to find out who it was.  Within weeks the guy came 
    forward to apologize.  They took his season tickets away and I think 
    they may have given him a fine.  Now, this was extremely effective as 
    it hasn't happened again.  But...I doubt you'd have anyone in the 
    stands if you adopted this attitude in Cleveland.   So, I guess Sam 
    Wyche's idea is the best I've heard.  "There animals and they ought 
    to be caged!".  It would bring new meaning to domed stadiums....the

    There are rivalries in all sports and football is certainly no
    exception.  Playoff rivalries seem to take the concept to new levels.
    Rarely do 2 teams meet each other on a regular basis in the 
    playoffs.  The Steelers and Raiders had a great rivalry in the 70's
    where each team employed psychological warfare on each other
    trying to gain any slight advantage. The 'Imacculate Reception'.	
    Who could ever forget that arcing deflection to Franco Harris for
    the game breaker. Recent years a new rivlary has evolved between
    Denver and Cleveland.  This is the 3rd time in 4 years these 2 
    have met for the AFC Championship. That in itself seems almost
    incredible.  Considering everything that's happened in the past
    few seasons between these 2, you couldn't ask for a better matchup.
    It seems appropriate that they meet again.  The Broncos should
    win this one again and send the Browns home once more wondering
    if they will ever be good enough.

of 16 games.  I think that the sad state of a lot of teams in the 
AFC caused this.

Most AFC teams aren't complete teams...the Jets, Pats, Chargers all
had major problems, the rest either had a good offense/no defense
or vice verse -or- had internal dissent.

So, The Donks, and the Brown have been the most consistent over the
last four years.

    Now the anti-Donks take on a 'why bother' attitude. Cleveland fans
    will being taking that same route this next week also. Why bother?
    They bother because the super bowl is what the NFL is all about. 
    That is the game every player in the league tries to get a role in.
    It's da big enchilada. Maybe the AFC isn't up to the NFC. I really	
    don't know. Maybe the SF 49'ers are as good or even better than
    most believe. To me, none of that even really matters. Regardless of
    who plays who, the Super Bowl has always held my undivided attention

     Gee, what about the year the 'Hawks won the West (83, 84?) and the Broncos
     DIDN'T make the playoffs with an 11-5 record!!  C'mon Mike, you know

    Congrats to the donks.  I didn't really give a hoot who one this
    one, though I was leaning towards the Browns cuz I like Clay Matthews
    and Carl Hairston.  
    
    If Humphrey is less than 100%, the Donks are in big trouble.  Part
    of me would like to see the Donks win, if only to silence the 49er
    Dynasty crowd - but in pure football sense, I caint see it.  I feel
    the Donks are destined to join the Vikings in terms of SB futilty,
    and Elway is destined to join Fran Tarkenton as a 3-time loser in
    the bowl.  
    
    I think the Donks can score vs. the 49ers, but I don't think the
    Denver D can stop the 49er offense.  Bubby Brister almost beat them,
    and they were only up by 3 in the 4th against a Bernie Kosar who,
    in my estimation, should have been removed in the first quarter.
    
    The few questionable calls had nothing to do with the outcome -
    which wasn't in doubt for most of the game.  Donks scoring after
    the 2 quick Browns TD's were the mark of a champeen team.

    	If the same Bronco team shows up against the 49ers, they may
    keep the spread within 10-14 pts. If it's the NORMAL Denver team
    then look for a 38-13 rout with guess who as MVP. Joe Idaho, natch!

     Well, Wiblurrrrrrr   (Said in a Mr. Ed Voice)  Looks to me like
    the Broncos are unquestionably the best team in the AFC.  There
    can be no question about that.  I don't care how much HOOT and 
    all the other Retractors and Anti-Donks piss and moan about how
    the Donks don't deserve to be there and how other teams are better.
    The Broncos ARE there and they have BEEN there 3 of the last 4 years
    which in it self in a credit to the organization and one of the 
    greatest QB's to ever play the game as well as the rest of the team.
    This is a different ball club and anyone who thinks that the Niners
    are just gonna walk over the Donks should look real close at the head
    to head games between these two teams.  the Broncos may not win
    the superbowl and they may be tied with the Vikes for the most losses
    in the "Big Game" but at least they have gotten there and that is more
    than anyother AFC team can say this year.  Personally, I think the
    Donks can win this game......  As the old saying goes... ..

    The Broncos played an excellent game yesterday.  I wonder if anyone
    remembers my prediction that Elway would have his best game of the
    year so far in this game.  The guy comes alive in the `Offs.  He
    took control of the game and he played well.  385 yards passing,
    20 of 36 for 56%, 3 touchdowns, No Interceptions, 39 yards rushing
    and cool collected audibles at the line.  Yea, Hoot....  Elway
    can change the play at the line.  Bobby Humphries was on his way
    to a great game until he was cheepshoted on the ground by one the
    the "Pound Puppies".  The stuck him in the rib with his helmet, he
    was trying to hurt him and did.  But....  It didn't matter,  Super 
    Sam came off the pine and played a great game.  Mike Young is another
    one along with Vance and the whole defense that had a great game. 
    Young is going to be the next Watson for the Broncos,  he has good 
    hands and can make some awesome catches.  Vance was open all day
    long and the defense played well.  In fact if it had not been for
    the 2 fumbles the game wouldn't have been close.

    pretty solid game.  REFS.  Reeves is still a jerk, but he's obviously

    highlight of the day.  Brent Mucusburger was interviewing Dan
    Reeves after the niner game.  Brent asked him a couple of 
    questions and Dan would start each answer with "Well, Dick...".

Well Congrats to the Donk's and their fans....
I first half just about put me to sleep and the second half was a good game.
Thought that the Browns were going to come back there a few times but they
had to many mistakes that hurt them, drop passes were what lost it for them
that and Bernie forcing the ball on a number of big plays....
The only thing that I really complained about the whole game was the hit's
on both QB's and the flag gets thrown one you know who!!!

Well the Donk's will represent the AFC in the big bowl but does not have
a ice cube in Hells chance of winning it.... To bad it will be the NFC again
this year...

Well...  They did it. A week or so ago, I said that to have any chance in the
Superbowl, the Donks needed to put together a complete game, start clicking,
and beat the Browns by a couple of T's or more.

My favorite play of the game was the inside slant run, where the Ref threw a
block, and the Broncos picked up a few more yards... I was rollin all over the
place, and could almost hear Hoot and the Parrot screeching (and I live in
Castle Rock). (During the Niner-Ram game, one of the Refs stripped the ball
from a Ram, and the Niners recovered.... I thought I was going to have a heart
attack!  These Refs are ALL HOPPED UP!!!)

After the game, the Browns were really decent about the loss. No cheap crap or
whining or bad-mouthing. I thought they handled what had to be a bitter loss
like a class organization.

SUPERBOWL BOUND!

	GO DONKS..... and play your hearts out! Win or lose, 3 SB's in 4 years
is one hell of an accomplishment.

     I hate to do this but I'd like to second Jill's point about
    the class the Denver fans had.  They could have very easily
    thrown stuff and made life much worse for the Browns than 
    they did....   The Broncos and their fan are all class. Maybe
    the Dawg Pound can learn something from this.  You can root
    for you team but you don't have to be an A$$ for them to win.

    I hope that the 49ers can find a way to beat the Bronco's.  The Broncos

      The Broncos to the Superbowl again!!!  Hard to beleive,  but its
    true.  I for one didn't think they would ever get this far this year, 
    but I'm glad they proved me wrong.  Win or lose to the 9's,  the
    Broncos have had one he!! of a season!!!!
    
      The key for the Broncos will be to sack Montana as many times as
    possible.  That will be super tough,  but not impossible.  The 9'r
    defense can be scored on,  so I don't think Elway will have to hard of
    a time.
    
       No blowout this time,  Denvers defense is totaly different than in
    years past (i.e. last 2 SB trys).

    Year in, Year out, the niner defense has been rated in the top 3
    in the NFC - and as Steven pointed out, is always overshadowed by
    the Niner offense.  They have a very good defense - one that hits
    extremely hard (Ronnie Lott hits hrd all the time), they play the
    run, the rush the passer, and they play good pass defense.
    
    THey've totally handled both of the teams they've faced in the
    playoffs.  And if they get the lead early vs. Denver, and I predict
    they will score first time they have the ball, the Broncos and their
    faithful will be in for another long, long day.
    
    Yeah, I know, the Bronco Defense is different then the one that
    got blown out by the Giants and Redskins - but the 49er offense
    is much, much, much better than the offense put forth by either
    the Giants or Redskins.

    in the last four years.   And, basically, they've been utterly
    blown away by a couple of one-shot wonders.  Neither Phil Simms
    and the New York Giants nor Doug Williams and the Washington

    And now they have to play the Team Of The 1980s whose quarterback
    is considered one of the best to ever play the game and who just
    had his best season ever and who has just engineered two
    near-perfect playoff performances over a couple of very good

     I think most Bronco fans are realistic about the up-coming
    SB.  Most that I have talked to (Almost everyone I know) are
    getting ready for the worst.  I think the thing I hear the most
    is that everyone is happy that the Donks are there again, after
    all,  no other AFC team can say that.  If the Donks get blown
    out, Think what would have happened to the Browns or the Oilers
    or even the mighty Steelers.  The Donks are the best that the 
    AFC has to offer.....  I can Garantee one thing,  The Donks and
    especialy John Elway will be in New `orleans to play for reals.
    This may very well be his last chance at the ring, he wants it bad !
    Win or lose, the Donks are a good ball club.  I hope they win

      I do wear orange,  but I also know that the 9'r d can be beat.  The

    That should be right. AFC West played NFC East 4 times in the 90's -

    Well Bob, you're much more confident about the 9er's winning then
    they are.   Everyone I heard (Joe, George, & Roger) all thought
    that they would have to actually prepare for Denver.  
    
    As long as Denver is on the field, they have a chance.  They can't
    let the fact that the 9er's are the team of the '80s beat them.
    I don't know who will win...but I know this about Denver.  The
    defense led the Broncos to the playoffs while the offense sat 
    around....but suddenly things changed.  When we played the 
    Steelers, Elway & Co. started to come alive and the defense sat 
    back for 3 quarters in awe and finally realized that they needed to 
    help wrap the game up.  Then came the Browns....and Denver did the
    totally unexpected....the offense & defense came together for
    a great game.   Denver is pulling out all the stops all of a
    sudden...and I think maybe, just maybe...they'll pull a miracle
    from out of their play books for the big game.  
    
    I'd loved to see them win.  Denver would gain a great deal of respect 
    if they beat the 9er's.  You think the Bronco fans are unbearable
    now....you'd probably have to banish us from the notes file.  I
    don't know what the key will be to beating the 9er's....Danny-boy
    seemed to have some ideas on that the last 10 years.  Of course,
    the 9er's have a new coach...so???   The defense is going to have
    to play the game of their lives....if there is a way...they have
    to get to Montana.  They've also got to hit the receivers so hard
    that they don't want to catch another ball....of course, first they
    have to catch them.  The offense will need a game even better than
    the one against the Browns...the line will have to protect Elway
    and Biff is going to have to have one of the best games of his career.

      Well Devil Dog,  I see your letting your feelings show about the 9's,
    and also about we Bronco fans who are in here all year.  It will be a
    tough game for Denver,  but I really feel that they can give the 49's a
    good game.  I don't think this will a blowout in any means.
    
      I see Atwater and Smith intimidating (sp?) rice and Taylor.  They
    won't be able to stop them,  but containment will be the key,  and I
    think putting tons of pressure on Joe will be a key as well.  Of course
    if you get right down to it,  everyone has to turn in a career type of
    performance to win the big one.
    
      And I will give the 9'r fans and their team a hand since they have
    been so immpressive..Actually the team is immpressive, not the fans,

    Joe Montana ONLY has to have a TYPICAL Joe Montana day to win the big
    one.  His previous Super Bowl wins were also typical Joe Montana.  Bart
    Starr's SB performances weren't career type.  Neither were Griese's,
    Bradshaw's, and most other quarterback's.  A couple, yes, like Doug
    Williams.  
    
    I suppose though, that Elway will need a career type performance for
    the Broncos to beat the 49ers.  All Montana will have to do is be his
    usual self, as long as the rest of the 49ers are their usual selves.

    The only thing I regret about the game sunday was Denver
    should have scored 11-13 more points. Art Modell deserved
    it all. When you talk about low class, your talking Art

    Art Modell was against the merger of the NFL and the AFL and at one
    point made a comment to the effect "I'll never allow a team like the
    Denver Broncos in this stadium." Even against his objection the merger
    was inevitable. For at least the past 3 years fan hooliganism has
    been on the rise in Cleveland and Art did nothing. By taking that
    course he was giving his passive approval of the activity. Only untill the
    situation got out of hand did he bother to step in and that was 
    probably more due to pressure from the NFL. Sam Wyche's sideline
    speech summed up most everybody's opinion on the matter. He probably
    also had something to do with releasing the location of the 
    Bronco's stay in Cleveland so motorists ccould harass the team
    all night.  Local authorities did nothing to stop the situation.
    He didn't like the box seat provided by the Broncos so he procured
    his own. The other one wasn't 'good enough'.  So yes, I harbored
    bitterness towards the Browns a team I actually like to see
    do well.  He got what he deserved.  All is forgiven at least for
    now.

    Denver beat SF last season in the Stick by a field goal.  The Broncos
    are much improved this season.  SF beat the Broncos in a pre season
    game. That was the controversial 'knee brace' game. SF hasn't beaten
    the Broncos in the 80's. Remember the 'snowball incident' on MNF?
    That record doesn't mean much here.  Denver has been blown out in
    past bowls.  Don't count much on that either.  Both teams have 
    Bowl experience and know what they are going into.  On paper, the
    9'ers have a clearly superior team. The game is not played on paper
    though it is played on turf.  Only the Jets were heavier underdogs
    in any Bowl at about 17-18 points.  The Jets won. The 9'ers 
    look unbeatble and they probably have more talent on the bench than
    most teams have on the entire roster. They do have weaknesses also
    and therein lies the key. Exploite those weaknesses and play great

            favorites over Denver. As would the Giants, Vikings and even
            Eagles since they already beat Denver at home the whole AFC
            NFC Playoff System is wrong because you never get the 2 best 
            teams in the SB. Denver was probably the 6 the best team in
            the NFL this year behind all the NFC Playoff teams and the

    I was thinking along the lines of how similar this game is to the Colts
    Jets 69 game. Colts looked unbeatable that year and the Jets had a
    gunslinger in Namath. Jets had an underated but consistant defense
    just like the  Donks. I was actually starting to lead towards the
    points and think an outright win for the Donks. Then I remember that

    	Back in the days of the Jets/Colts Super Bowl there was a strong
    opinion among professional gamblers that the NFL was far superior
    to the AFL, leading to outrageous spreads to get some money on the
    AFL teams.  There were few past performances to refer to.  The 11�
    point line today reflects the 49ers excellent 14-2 record and the

HOOT, I seem to recall that MOST of the league complains about the visiting
dressing room facilities, the field conditions (or lack thereof) etc, of
the Clevland Browns.  Things like grossly inferior to the rest of the leagues'
facilities.  That is a whole lot different than, "I don't like only having
a window between me and the press box" type of complaint.


re Bolwen's comments, I personnaly thought they were sorta funny....
Only those with the thinnest of skins would be deeply offended by the Rice
comment.  Besides, I think Bowlen is AGAIN trying to deflect attention from

Well Claybonehaid(tm) a few times in here but you must have missed it, with
your new orange&blue contacts and all.... Also to a number of Donk fans in
the town where I live, one bar there has all this donk crap hanging from the

    Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen is being asked by a Chinese-American
    group for an apology for using the term "Chinaman" while joking about
    San Francisco 49ers receiver Jerry Rice. 
    
    Chinese for Affirmative Action of San Francisco also asked NFL
    Commissioner Paul Tagliabue to fine Bowlen for his "racist comment."
    
    Bowlen offered his tongue-and-cheek assessment of the San Francisco
    team at the Broncos' training complex Monday: "These guys have got a
    great owner," he said. "They've got God for a quarterback.  They've got
    a Chinaman who plays wide receiver, whose feet never touch the ground."
    
    Said Bowlen Monday: "It wasn't a racial slur of any nature."

    I hadn't read it yet.  It was a stupid statement....I don't know
    if it is necessarily racial though.  China has 2 meanings.
    One the country and also high-quality porcelain...something very
    precious that you protect so it doesn't break.  Although, Chinaman is 
    an offensive statement referring to a chinese man....it doesn't
    make sense that he would use it in that context in reference
    to Rice.   He could have been relating to rice a main part of the
    chinese diet...but that's a pretty loose connection.  I think
    Bowlen has a loose connection.  Who knows how that man's mind 
    works...but I think everyone would agree it was a stupid statement.
    I think a fine is a little ridiculous though based on the info
    I've heard so far.

    Somebody asked how could Humphrey be 100%. Cracked ribs and 2 weeks

    I think the Broncos have a MUCH better chance in the SB than 
    most people feel.  I grant you that the 9ers look invincible, and
    that they play the game in a very machine-like way.  But this game 
    isn't played on paper, and on the field anything can, and very often 
    does, happen.  I believe the Broncos will win this SuperBowl.  And this
    is how:
    
    I believe that the SF O will misfire abit.  I believe that Joe will
    toss an interception or two, and that the Denver O will turn that into
    points.  Denver will win, IMHO.

    The past few days I have been trying to sort out the difference
    between my loyalty to the Broncos and the reality of the  task that 
    awaits them. Here is how I see it. Denver will pull the upset of the
    decade. It will not be easy.  They need a super effort from all
    players. They need to stay close at all times. This is the
    best team Denver has sent to a bowl yet. Cinci played them closelast
    year. Denver is better now than Cinci was then. Make them have the
    mistakes. Capitalize on EVERY mistake. Hit hard and hit often.
    The more physical the contest the closer the gme will be.

    Although I tire of Bronco mania I must admit that the Bronco's DO
    provide the 9ers with interesting matchups.  Elway has receivers that
    allow him to improvise on scrambling situations.  Johnson, Jackson, and
    Nattiel all have great speed and good hands.  Ronnie Lott has played
    against Elway in college and has stated on occasion that Elway has
    an arm that is dangerously strong.  The cutback running of a healthy
    Humphries can provide problems for the defense.  Hilliard of the Saints
    had good game against 9ers on monday night this year.  Neither Bell or
    Walker had the opportunity to run on the 9ers.  If Denver does not
    panic they can be in the game and you just never know what happens when
    Denver is in a close game.

    Actually, things are rather quiet. I get the impression that Denver
    fans are split 50-50. 50% think they will get killed again and the
    other 50% think they have an outside chance of winning. Thankfully,
    we haven't been inundated with massive hysteria/ranting and raving.
    The biggest hype has been Bowlen blowing his mouth off. His latest
    stupid comments were whining about New Orleans not being a family
    oriented place, i.e. not a great place to take the kids. If it's that
    bad then why doesn't he just stay home? I would bet noone would miss
    that jerk. The real funny part is the fact that this whining is coming
    from the same guy that wanted a bunch of criminals on his team at the
    end of last season. I did notice someone that painted his/her car day
    glo orange in the parking lot here and the guy that said he will let
    anyone paint anything on his house as long as it is orange or blue. But
    nothing like the last two times.

    I think you hit on a good one there Frank. Broncmania in past
    seasons has even worn on me.  There hasn't been any this season
    and it is difficult to find it now.  It's awfull quiet out there
    in Donkland but you can expect the tempo to pick up this coming
    week.  The Bronco faithfull are scrambling for Bowl tickets
    and reservations.  At the going rates for both and considering all
    we've been thru, it's hard to believe they have loosing on their minds.   
    
    Other than Bolan's 'Rice' comments the emphasis of this weeks' Bowl news
    has been everybody telling Denver it's over.  The more you tell
    somebody how impossible things are the more likely the chance for
    surprise. That is not hype. That is not Broncomania. That is the

    Your only as good as your last game.  If Denver is to beat these 
    guys, they will have to maintain at least that much intensity and
    also jack it up a notch or two on both sides of the ball. 
    Under game conditions, Denver's running and passing attack along 
    with Elway's ability to improvise will keep the ball in their hands
    and keep Montana on the bench.  Ball control and time of possesion will
    be essential.  Denver has an extensive list of razzle-dazzle plays
    that work more often than not.  Trick plays won't win this game
    but they are there and a taste of 1 here or there will keep     
    SF off balance enough and keep them second guessing.  When the pocket
    breaks down, the patterns must change.  It matters little how many 
    Ronnie Lotts you have on your team under those conditions. Somebody
    will be open.  That somebody must be found.  Offensively, the Broncos
    can hold their own.

    this time of the week.  Very boring, but less complicated. 
    
    So here goes.  The most critical matchup undoubtedly will be the
    Montana vs the Denver D.  For Denver to win this game, it is
    essential that the defense holds.   Do not allow this game to
    turn into a scoring contest. The Broncos defense is going to
    be asked to put out tremendous effort.  If the 49'ers can take
    a lead requiring 3 or more scores by Denver, they can turn out the
    lights and it will be a blowout like everyone suggests. If the D
    can maintain intensity and keep the offense in a position to contend
    Denver can win this football game.  The Broncos own worst enemy in
    Bowls past is the Broncos' defense.  This defense is different.  
    It is a difficult situation to be in but you have got to start
    somewhere and basics is a good a point as any.  This will 
    sound rediculous to some but their best bet is to force the 9'ers
    into a passing game. That sounds like out of the pan and into the
    fire but when Denver is on defense they must maintain some control
    of the game. Denver's best control is the over the opponents'
    ground game.  Blitz only sparingly.  Use a zone coverage.  Hammer every
    receiver that thinks about comming off the line. Phiscally hammer
    anyone catching a ball.  If you can't stop them, hit them and hit 
    them hard.  It might not stop them but it will slow them down.     
    This 49'er team is not unbeatable. The record shows that. Somebody
    did something right against this team.  It is the defense that
    must find the answer.

    TO me, the Broncos would be better off if the 9er's went to the
    run - but the 9er's in the 80's are a precision passing team, with
    a good runnig attack - balance is the key word.  The only thing
    they haven't shown, yet, in the playoffs is the long passing game
    to Rice and Taylor.  The Bronco's weak link to me, are the corners.
    Those guys are not that good - they aren't that quick.  Yeah, sure,
    Atwater and Smith hit like a ton of bricks - but they have to watch
    Rathman, Craig, and the tight ends - and believe me, Rice and Taylor
    are not going to get intimidated - the NFC has numerous safeties
    that hit hard.  Ain't done no good.
    
    The key against Joe Montana is the straight up the middle pressure.
    Because of his short drop and quick release, the outside rush and
    blitz rarely works.  Sucess normally comes by pressure up the middle
    and applying hits like Jim Burt's in the 86 playoffs.  The key to
    the Bronco chances rests on the nose tackle and inside backer's
    shoulders.  IF the 9ers handle them, turn off the TV, read a book,
    kick the dawg, it ain't gonna matter.  Niners romp.  You can take
    that to the bank.
    
    Other keys for the Broncos D - who will cover Rathman and Craig
    out of the backfield - will the Donks put a back on them, or a
    linebacker?  The Bronco's linebackers caint cover either (they don't
    have a Carl Banks type - sorry Mr. Meck).
    
    The other key for the Bronco's defense - the Bronco Offense controlling
    the ball.  If the 1-2-3 and punt, or get quick scores - it will
    mean Joe will have that much more time to pick the Broncos apart.

    I feel the Bronco's shoud bring back Joe Collier type defense to
    contain the 9'ers. The quick re-act rather than attack or zone defense
    has given the 9'ers offense fits. 
    
    Sorry folks but Joe eats zones like the fridge eats 1/4 pounders.
