Well, the wound wasn't that bad according to the docs, so it must be
the psychological aspects keeping her from playing.

At that last tennis match they arrested a German guy armed with a gun
and a knife. He wasn't out to kill anyone though -- he simply thought
he was James Bond.

Sergi Bruguere of Spain won his firsted French Open by beating the
current 2x champion Jim Courier in five sets.

I saw parts of the 3rd, 4th and 5th set. Courier looked like he was
gonna three-peat midway in the 5th (when I turned off the tee vee).
Quite the suprise to find out he was beaten.

sets, and 4-2 40-0 in the fourth when he lost his bottle. He lost the set 5-7 and
gave Martin the final set basically 0-6.

Also out is Mary-Joe Fernandez, she got beat by Garrison 6-0 6-1. That's a
bity because she was one of my favourite players. Can anyone out there in the
tennis world tell me if she's still going out with David Wheaton???? By the way
he beat Michael Chang in five sets to make the fourth round.

Most European papers are claiming that Aggasi has hyped up his injury.. He's
won three games in a row and meets some Aussie qualifier in todays fourth round.
All fourth rd games (men and women) are scheduled to take place today.....

That crying you heard was from CBS which has to find a way to get some
viewer interest in a Men's semis that will have no
    McEnroe,Conners,Courier,Becker,Edberg or Lendl.

The mens quarters are Medvedev-Larsoon,Pioline-Masur,Volkov-Muster and
the only match that anyone cares about Sampras-Chang. If CBS can get
ratings from this bunch then tennis is far more popular than any of us
    would believe.

I do know this: Thye stadium will be packed for all the matches. The
crowds there don't really seem to care who they watch.

I kinds like tennis myself. I agree that the slug-it-out-from-the-baseline game
is less than thrilling, and usually prefer the women's matches myself. Bud
Collins made a good point this weekend. He said that they should have done what
major league baseball did. Just as MLB outlawed metal bats, pro tennis should
have outlawed metal rackets. This would reduce the speed/power, and increased
the skill level required in the players. Unfortunately, it is probably too late
to go back.

The bad news is, as Dave pointed out, that the big names got wiped out of the
men's competition. The good news is that Aggassi was one of them.

Nope, TCM. Tennis is, was and always will be primarily a sport of the
country club set. I expect to see the beautiful people at a Grand Slam
event. When I watch a Knicks game I'd expect to see basketball fans
but apparently there's a shortage of them in New York.

    re. =bob=

Bud Collins' opinion is a widely held one. Tennis fans have been de-
crying the way pro tennis has sold its soul to the sporting goods
companies for some time now. And I'm afraid you're right, there's no
going back now. The big servers and their smash tennis is here to
stay. Maybe enough people will get sick enough of the Richard Kraijecks
(sp.) and realize how much more entertaining the Michael Changs are
and cause a groundswell. Then again maybe TCM will be the new front
     man for Motley Crue.

I ,for one, don't miss MacEnroe or Connors or Nastasie or any of
the other players who behaved like spoiled children. Tennis is the
only sports where the players behave so badly with so little cons-
equence. It's almost as if the players are the upper crust and the
officials mere servants to be dealt with firmly and to be constantly
reminded of their station in life. Thanks goodness we don't see as
much of it any more. As for Agassi, the "image is everything" label
is undeserved, IMO. That's a commercial folks. No one thinks that Bo
Jackson can drop a Pepsi out a window and run down ten flights of
stairs to catch it before it hits the ground yet Agassi is some kind
of poseur because of of a commercial. I thought we celebrated the in-
dividual in this country. Or is it cool to be different but not too
different. That would pretty much explains why Sanchez-Vicario has
a commercial in heavy rotation and Navritalova, probably the best
women player ever and my favorite athlete, doesn't.

re: Conners, McEnroe, et al. (REK, "et al." is latin. It kinda means
"and the others")

I was no big fan of theirs at the time, but I will say that most of their
emotion, be them a gaggle of spoiled brats, was genuine. They wanted their
way, and wanted to win. My problem with Aggassi is that his emotions seem faux
to me. It seems like he is "on" when people are looking, and makes himself a
walking commercial for Nike, and other products he is looking to endorse. I
admit that this is merely being enterprising, and carving out an identity
which certain market segments can relate to, but I simply find it unappealing.

re: Martina

I'm also a big fan. She truely dominated the sport for a while. It
particularly impressed me how, at the early stages of her dominance, she
basically re-engineered her body to be leaner, stronger and have more stamina.
It took hard work and will power to do this.

I think I'll pass on football with my daughters. There is much more
opportunity in tennis and golf (and more money) and less risk of injury
(even with the chance of being stabbed in the back).

Oh, no doubt about the addictiveness of alcohol. It's definitely a problem
in sports too (just look at Paul Holmgren).

They don't, Mikey. Sexual preference is distinct from sexual
orientation. Martina, by any measure, is one of the greatest
athletes of our times and a personal favorite of mine. That

Nobody called Seles a man and she was just as dominating before an
overzealous fan decided the only Monica that Steffi could beat was
a dead one (he wasn't far from right)> Nope, try and gloss over it

No, no, she got sued by her horse, remember?

Actually, the thing that is most impressive about Martina, is that she
virtually "rebuilt" her body during the height of her career. When she
hit the big time, she was downright chunky. She had terrible eating habits
and trainng habits. She began to listen to people, and lost a lot of weight,
while getting stronger, and gainign stamina. It was this that led her to her
dominating years.
