Nice to see that the more things change, the more they stay the same! 

I've got a little work-related antecdote that I think the ::SPORTS people
can appreciate. Our mail system has graphics capabilities, and like the way
DEC folks use the P-name, some people here have cartoons. I got several mail
messages last week proclaiming that "today is Tuesday", including one with a
life-size cartoon of Bill-the-Cat. After the 5th message I began to wonder
about this until someone told me that "Tuesday", which can (and usually is
on any day) means that as many people as possible from the company go to the
bar next door for drinks. The ONLY rule is that anyone caught talking about
work has to buy a round for everyone there - usually 30 or so people! 

Not that anything could replace the original "freakin' lunatics", but I can
see myself settling in pretty well over here. Let me know when the nextED
(haven't spelled like that in a while) ::SPORTS get-together is.

 I doubt it Jeff. When I visited him last March, he said his computer time
 at Columbia was very limited and the computers were very slow. He's got a

more and more filled up with internet addresses, while there are less

an anonymous FTP and the welcome message was this:

Just a quick note to let you all know that I'm alive, well, and back
on-line, courtesy of Compuserve. I'm living a crazy life-style, wherein I
spend Monday through Friday in Chicago - land of da Bulls, da Bears, da
Hawks, and the Cubbies. Saturdays and Sundays I'm back in Mass.  The
frequent flyer mileage is piling up at an alarming rate. :-)

I flew in to Chicago on the night the Bulls won the championship last
spring. I'm glad I didn't know until the next day about the riots which
accompanied the win - it turned out my hotel was less than three blocks
from where the rioting had started, and I had left the cab and walked the
last 4 blocks to get in 'cause traffic was completely stopped.  Someone up
there watches out for fools and small children.

So, there's now a remote correspondant from the Windy City :-). Don't be
strangers.

    Well having a 1-800 number certainly does help.
    
    I just got a call from -dan'l!
    
    The guy is really, really happy.  Say's it's better "after DEC".
    He's working like crazy, social life is gone except for weekends.  Has
    no main squeeze or for that matter, any squeeze!
    
    On Wednesday he was promoted to "Communications Director"!  (of course
    he said there was a lot more responsibility and a lot more work but no
    more money).
    
    We're all invited down to Charlotte in March to watch the water polo

Actually, the quotes are fine either way.  Both ways work.  The important
part is to make sure the thing with the '@' is in quotes.  They both parse
to the exact same thing.

Folks should check UPSAR::GATEWAYS to find their local regional mail
concentrator (RMC) before using DECWRL.  For the folks in the east, 
US1RMC works.  I believe Nashua has US2RMC up and running.  It's all 
detailed in DECWRL::"gateways.doc".  You'll find access quicker and more
reliable.  I believe DECWRL is going to be phased out soon.

First off, I don't doubt Jeff's word that they will ultimately do away
with DECWRL, but there's nothing about that in Gateway.PS.   At this point
in time, the other mail concentrators still route through DECWRL.

brews, I wouldn't worry.  If DEC was to do away with that node, I'm sure
that it would not be without them posting enough information on the internet
to let folks know how to get in touch with Digital again.  I'm sure there's
tons of places they'd post the new info.

I used to think our net was big.  I came here from a place that had no

Hi Everyone,

For those of you who don't now, the job I took upon leaving ?Digital
didn't work out and I was let go on February 26.  Exactly one month later,
I found a new job, in the Corporate MIS department at Staples.  Staples,
for those of you who don't know, is a rapidly growing chain of office
superstores and I'll be working on databases and so on for their Marketing
Department.  I see it as a great opportunity for me.

My other news is that the Ninj is getting married.  No definite date
yet, but over the past year I was introduced to a friend of my sister,
Susan Feeney.  Susan is my age and she has two boys, 16 and 12.  Susan
works at Fleet Bank, loves football, and her boys are very athletic.

me at home, but the best place to reach me will be at work.  I have voice

I was TFSO'd in November 1992, matter o'fact my entire business was
in the shi**er. The Distributors/VARS/Sales pukes bitched that they like this 
1-800 # and finally woke up the management team. The management team felt 
maybe they should listen to the customers after BP told us that during some 
free luncheon. The decision was reversed in December 1992 and I still have the
same job answering the phone and being a sympathetic ear to peoples prolems
like Bruce May.

noter who left a little over 2 months ago.  (You might remember me better
as the '93 BE rotis champ!  ;^).  I'm not only writing to give you my new

for a class at Summa-Four from September 20-24.  Please try to arrange a 
get-together (or 2 or 3) sometime that week.  I've always wanted to meet
you guys and I don't have much else to do besides go to class.  I'd love
to catch a Sox game if they're in town.  Speaking of baseball, how about
that Rockies attendance?  They just broke they're own record for attendance
at a 3-game series with over 216,000 for a 3-game series against the

Leary's attendance will be mandatory!!!!  No Lou Holtz excuses either!

As most of you know her stint is Chicago is over.  She's been back here a 
bit, and now, her next job is going to be in Huntsville Alabama.

Thanks for forwarding the note about "Cindy Movies" ... Rollward.   "Brian's
Song" is indeed an all-time great "Cindy Movie" ... It's got it all ... The
black-white friendship, the overachieving underdog, the fatal disease robbing
the hero in his youth with the grieving widow left behind, the stirring
made-for-TV orchestral music, and of course, the nice neat little ten-minute
packages of scenes and dialogue that set the pace perfectly for all the
commercials.   It is a classic.

In other news ...

1.  The Phillies ... What a fun year this was !!!   But, of course, all good
things must end and I must once again bemoan the lost title.   Every time I get
to thinking that perhaps just maybe by now I might have seen every which to
lose ... along comes a Mitch Williams to slap me upside da haid to remind that
there are an infinite number of ways to blow the big one.   I still cannot
believe that my beloved baseball team actually scored 14 runs in a World Series
game and lost ... Even the Red Sox never did that !!!

2.  The Wahoos ... Beat North Carolina this past Saturday so the weekend was
not a total loss.   The Hoos look like a solid 2nd place in the ACC behind the
ungodly Seminoles.  Dan Medvid and I took a weekend trip to Charlottesville in
early October to see my Hoos play against his Ohio U Bobcats.  The game was not
pretty but we had a great time together.   Dan met a bunch of my old college
buddies and the story telling went on all weekend long.  Great time.

3.  The Carolina Panthers ... This is the week we find out if Charlotte gets an
NFL team.   All the signs look positive ... Dan'l and I will be together at a
local Hooters when the announcement is made.   Hopefully, we'll be celebrating.

4.  MicroHUNT Consulting Associates, Inc ... Things did not work out for me in
the new venture that was formed immediately after we were all laid off from
DEC.  So I have left that group and I have formed my own company.   Best news
is that I have signed two deals for two different customers and I have begun
billing on both of them.   Both deals should keep me busy (and the MicroHUNTs
fed) for the next 6 months to a year.   Very exciting time ... Feels good to be
my own boss ... at long last.

about the correct usage of the Internet Mail Gateway from
DECnet nodes. Since a lot of you IP managers are either
DECnet managers or know the local DECnet managers, this
message is going out to you. Please pass it on.

When sending mail from a VMS node using DECnet to the
Internet, users should address this mail to one of the
Regional Mail Concentrators (RMC). The RMC's are:
  US1RMC -> located in Littleton, Ma.
  US2RMC -> located in Nashua, N.H.
  US3RMC -> located in Palo Alto, Ca.
  VBORMC -> located in Valbonne, France
  JRDMAX -> located in Japan


The RMC's are fully supported production level mail servers.

Mail coming into Digital from the Internet gets sent
to one of the RMC's for delivery to internal DECnet nodes.

Mail from a DECnet node to the Internet can be sent through one
of the RMC's by sending to:
     xxxRMC::"internet address"
where "xxxRMC" is the closest RMC to the user.




Users should not route Internet mail through DECWRL.
DECWRL is not a production level mail server. DECWRL
is available as an access point to the gatekeeper archives
from DECnet hosts but it is not a mail server. Anyone using
DECWRL as a mail machine is taking a chance that it will
be unavailable at any time with no warning.

Recently mail came out from our corporate TCP/IP network maintainers 
saying that all Digital employees should use the nearest of the 
following 5 "Regional Mail Concentrators" (RMCs) to send mail through 
when sending mail from a VMS system using DECnet to an Internet address. 
  US1RMC -> located in Littleton, Ma.
  US2RMC -> located in Nashua, N.H.
  US3RMC -> located in Palo Alto, Ca.
  VBORMC -> located in Valbonne, France
  JRDMAX -> located in Japan

DECWRL should not be used for this purpose.  It can't handle the load. 
The 5 systems above are fully supported production level mail servers.

However, as shown below, HLO is one of the few exceptions to the above rule.  
Employees in HLO should use CRL to route DECnet mail to Internet 
addresses, since we have a direct connection to CRL.  Address mail as 
follows:
	CRL::"internet-address"

example: CRL::"[email protected]" to send mail to a 
person at the company "company".

This works whether you're sending mail outside of Digital or inside.  
The 5 RMC's above require some extra-fancy addressing for mail to get 
outside Digital to the Internet, since they're not also Easynet-Internet 
gateways like CRL is.  So we can consider ourselves lucky that we don't 
have to do extra-fancy addressing when sending to outside Digital.

Of course, if the system you're sending to runs DECnet and is on the 
Easynet, just use the DECnet address, and avoid CRL altogether. 
If your VMS system is running UCX ("TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS", to 
be precise), and has the "SMTP" service enabled, you could also address
your mail to an Internet address as follows: 

	SMTP%"[email protected]"

where of course the whole thing in quotes is the Internet address. 
I just tested this yesterday and it works even getting mail to outside 
of Digital.  This kind of addressing totally avoids the use of DECnet 
altogether, so if your VMS system's DECnet is down and you want to get mail 
out you could try SMTP%"[email protected]".

So to summarize, from HLO use

	CRL::"internet-address"
or	SMTP%"internet-address" (if UCX running)

to send mail to an Internet address from a VMS system.

    	Yabbut in pursuit of our Christmas Get Together/reunion here's a
    update on some changes:
    
    	Ninj (happily married to Susan) sold his place in Clinton and
    bought a house in Salem.  While the drive to Framingham is a stinker,
    he loves working at Staples and finds that life beyond DEC is pretty 
    cool.  He's checking his calendar to see if Friday is OK and there's no
    conflict with the ninj_jr's hokey schedule.  He'll let me know later
    in the week.  *IF* he comes, he won't be able to stick around too late
    so I'd advise folks to arrive early if possible.  Ninj said he's saving
    a vacation day for the Patriots day GT so plan on him being there.
    
    	Doc ManyZero's (Midnight to the neophytes) has a part-time job
    at Lechemeres in the Pheasant Tree Mall in New Hampster for the
    Christmas Season while he waits to latch on to something permanent.
    He want's to do the contract/consultanbt thingie and asked me to pass
    on the request that if there's something like that available
    internally, he'd appreciate knowing about it.
    
    	Dickstah is doing contract work through a Woostah Agency and has
    been doing it for a while (I think he said since October, which is when
    his unemployment ran out.).  It could be a couple o' months assignment.
    
    	A&W is on assignment in Huntsville, Alabummer but she's not sure
    how much longer that assignment will last.

No.  Introducing a strong, proud male role model like Coach Bob Knight into

If you doubt this just axe your brother up in the big house.  I would suggest
this course of action: Enroll in a "adult children of alcoholics" 12-step
seminar/encounter group and have your girl friend participate as a support

jack scraps floating in it.  Rip off your Ma's jacket and point to the wide

    Perhaps I cain help you this mice thing, Riggamotis.
    
    True story: I was rooming by Lake Calhoun in the yuppie district
    a Minneapolis in 1983.  It was the depths of winter, we had an old
    house (built in 1903, with a stone foundation), and the place was
    crawling with mice.  This was intolerable, cuz word had gotten around
    among the babes that we had rodents, which impacted [sic] our, er,
    productivity.
    
    My roomie tried it all: poison this poison that, and the mice only
    sneered back at us with impunity from the woodwork.  It was time for
    MrT to take command.  A big snow storm was rolling in, and this meant
    that everybody hurried down to the local watering hole to pair off 
    for the duration.  The snow was blowing hard, but we were warmed by
    the throbbing pulse of the jukebox basebeat, slamming Cognacs to help
    fight off the lethargy of partying at 10:30 AM on a Friday morning.
    
    The place was packed and the market was moving.  We scored, and the
    four a us went out to the car to git back to the pad to ride the storm
    out.  I insisted that we stop at the Lund's supermarket, where I bought
    some stanky cheese and several heavy duty mouse traps.  As the fun 
    began out in the living room I proceeded to fill the house with traps
    bearing cheese, peanut butter, you name it.  After a great night a 
    partying one a our guests shrieked and wakened me.  She was freaking
    out about all the little cute mices twitching in the traps along the
    wordwork.
    
    Here's what I'm getting at.  I emerged into the hallway in my robe
    and everybody was bitching about how half the trapped mice were still
    alive.  My roomie (who's a charter member of GreenPeace) had ten
    reasons why not to each proposal I made as to how to kill off the
    little rodents.  Finally, I took matters into my own hands, and
    gathered up the half-daid mice and put them in a neat little pile 
    on a snow drift out in the back yard.  The solution was simple: Toast.
    
    As the ladies and my roomie stared out the frosted back door window
    disbelievingly, I administered the fuel, shivering in my robe as my 
    stones tinkled from the -5 degree temp.  
    
    I lit a match and... POOF.  The fire was on and... the little mice
    actually started making these tiny little screams.  The back door 
    opened and more criticism started.  You cain imagine, words like
    "sadist!," "killer," "animal abuser," and so forth.  After arguing
    with the big mouths at the back door I turned back and the (now brown
    to black) mice were STILL alive!  Squealing high pitched pathetic 
    squeals and motioning with their broken legs to put them out of their
    misery.  I had to make a move and I did: I re-doused them and re-lit,
    but steal more pathetic squeals (both from the poor mice and from the
    ladies and my animal-rights activist room mate).  Confused, under 
    pressure from all sides, I did what I had to do: I picked up the
    snow shovel, raised it, and brought it up and down up and down up and
    down I couldn't stop they had to die I hit them I hit them again and
    again and again smoke puffing girls screaming neighbors poking their
    haids out windows wondering why I was out their naked behind a_untied
    robe in five below beating a snow bank, beating it, with half dressed
    people screaming and crying at the back door.
    
    Well, they finally died.  I couldn't go back in, too hot in there,
    and besides, it was fascinating to see the recently deceased mice, 
    their hair standing straight out, everything black except for the
    terror-stricken eyes and bared teeth.  My "friends" started bitching
    again, this time about how I couldn't just leave the poor things laying
    out there on the snow drift, claws grabbing at the frigid blue morniing
    sky, for all the neighborhood to see.  My roomie tossed out some
    ziplocs and I inserted them into their plastic grave, one bag each, and
    buried them in the drift.
    
    I *told* my roommate to let me flush them down the toilet.  That's what
    you should do, Jeff, flush 'em.  But keep some fuel, matches, and a 
    shovel on hand just in case...

Nice to hear from you guys again ... You don't hear much about DEC these days.
How's the ALPHA chip doing ???   It's obvious that it's a "bet the company" chip
but it sure doesn't get a lot of ink out here in RealWorldLand.   Time to worry
???

Things are good here in Carolina.   In September, I left the small group that
had formed up after our Charlotte layoff.   It just didn't work out.  I spent 8
months in Birmingham, Ala and then three more in Atlanta ... Commuting to/from
Charlotte every weekend ... Got real old real fast and I had some "personality"
problems with the other fellas.   Some other time I can give you the whole scoop
but right now I have some legal actions pending against them so I gotta zip the
lips on this one.

So ...  I spent the rest of September and most of October doing the Resume
Shuffle (again!) and not having much luck there.  I even filed for and collected
some Unemployment checks for a coupla weeks.   Fun place, that unemployment
office ... Not!

So, about midway thru October, I got the Big Idea ... After losing two jobs
inside of a year, I decided to take the plunge and make myself totally
layoff-proof forever more.   Say hello to my new company ...    MicroHUNT
Consulting Associates, Inc.    I went out and got a lawyer and filed the papers
necessary to make me a corporation and then I went and nailed *TWO* long-term
software development consulting contracts.   One is for 6 months and the other
is for 12 months ... The 6-month job is on site in a small town outside of
Charlotte and the other is 100% remote (i.e., working from Home City, baby) ...
And both are paying much more per hour than I was making in salary at either DEC
or the followup group.

And it's interesting stuff, too ... No more old ALL-IN-1 hacking ... Writing
Windows front ends using Visual Basic ... The 6-month job uses a SQL Server
back-end database for a banking application and the year-long job uses Access as
its database engine for a specialized textile plant.   Fun stuff.  Way cool
tools and "modern" gizmos and widgets.

But ... (there's always a "But") ... All is not peachy ... There is major league
big time risk in doing it this way.   I gotta replace these contracts with new
ones when they run out.  I gotta do it.  Nobody else, mano.    And I gotta keep
three little MicroHUNT tummies full and the roof warm.   I'm scared to death but
I absolutely *LOVE* the freedom and the "Finally No Bozos" situation that I've
been able to build.  So, wish me luck, my friend, I'm on the entrepreneur fast
track !!!

Everything else is just fine ... We're all nuts about the new Carolina Panthers
and Carolina hoops is as obnoxious as ever ... (Sure did like seeing UMass smack
the Heels in the NIT!!!)   My beloved Wahoos won their 3rd straight NCAA soccer
title which is a major big deal in the collegiate soccer world but it's a huge
yawn to the other 99% of the sporting public.

And I still can't quite believe that I actually root for a baseball team that
scored 14 runs and *lost* a World Series game.   Unreal, man.    Even the BoSox
never did that, fercripesake.   But this '93 Phillies team was, in so many ways,
the most enjoyable team they've ever had.   They were a sheer joy to watch,
especially Lenny Dykstra ... God, what a post-season he had !!!

Yea, cut down day for folks here too.  I work for a different group, so I'm 
safe, but there was a staggering number of hits...

My section had a few hits as well. Lots of people I know elsewhere were
cut. 

BTW being at risk and not being cut this time around is not necessarily a
blessing. Rumor - well it is better than rumor - has it that after July 1
there will be no package - only whatever severance is required (whatever
that may be).

Some will argue that at least for now you keep earning a pay
check. However, if you have 10 years of service and 
get laid off in July or August you would have come out ahead if you
were let go now and got the package.

Well, on the good news front, I just received mail from Bob Hunt.

covering county High School football games on Friday evenings this fall.

As you may know, the fanaticism for HS football down south is rabid, and

    Kev, sorry to hear the news.  Hope you can latch onto something,
    although, in the long run, it's probably a blessing if you can land a
    career on the outside.
    
    Our entire business is being phased out over the next month or two.  We
    are presently working like hell to pack and move it.  Kinda like
    digging your own grave, if you know what I mean.  Once we've moved it
    all to vendors, there is no work for us as things stand, regardless of
    the move of work here from ABO.  Some of us may get transferred to
    cover this move, but most will be surplused.  The vendor is offering
    jobs, but many are leery of going because of the change, and the
    difference in benefits.  However, it's kinda like getting an offer from
    the outside and wondering if you should go, but not having an offer on
    the inside to stay.  What's the decision?
    
    We should hear something in the next two weeks with more definition.

Yeah, in WWII that used to happen -- dig your own grave and then wait
to get a bullet behind the ear.

Meantime, Robbie Bob sucks up his $12 million a year to prove the premise

My group just got moved into Digital Consulting Services.

I'm not sure if this is good or bad.  I have visions of it getting bought
out, and us getting generically "quantumized", in that we'd get less money,
shitty benefits, have to work rigid hours, and have to dress up to go
to work.

Strike One!

it's Digital Consulting (DC) not Digital Consulting Services (DCS). I
think the point they wanted to make was to distinguish the lofty efforts
of DC as opposed to the mundane details of MCS. And to emphasize
Consulting. 

The point that I got was that DC provided no services to its customers.

I don't know much about services.  I just write software.  We did well
last quarter (made a million more than they figured we would) but beyond
that, like I said, I just write software.....

Actually MAB, this is about my 3rd go-round with what is now DC.

We started out in the Ct. District, went from there into "corporate"
into a group that was very similar to what DC is now.  Then into 
Central Engineering.

We're a different type of software product, and they never knew where
to put us.  Our users don't upgrade hardware or anything frequently and
turn-around times are nothing like they would be, say, with a compiler.

So, after a while, we were in something else for a bit, then back
into Central Engineering, and now back in DC.

No big whoop.  Like I said, I just write software....8^)


I think it's because we live off the revenue we generate, and 
I don't believe folks like VMS Engineering do that...  That's why
we're back in DC....

If they hit my group with layoffs, they might as well bag the product,
that's how thin we are -- as they said in "Lethal Weapon", we're so
thin we're anorexic.....

Yeah, my mail is slow.  I've got one of those small "Mayberry RFD" type
post offices, and sometimes you wouldn't believe the trips my mail takes.

The Post Office is in East Glastonbury, and my mail has made side trips
to East Granby, East Canaan, East Jibrou, Easton...you name it!  And to
think these b****rds have the nerve to now charge 32 cents for a letter.

I'll tell you, if they ran that place like a business, we'd be able to
send a letter for about 10 cents.....

The Paper Doll is indeed open under new management. It's still pretty
lame as them kinda establishments go. Just tops, no bottoms, no touching,
that sorta thing. If'n you're into these, I'd recommend Big Bertha's
Chili Parlor and Bordello in Wheeling. Check out Harley.

Middletown is indeed the home of the One, Right and True Wesleyan College.

I'm in the extreme north end of town, easy spittin' distance from
Cromwell, CT.   It's 10 minutes south of work.

Yep.

Basically, what's happening is that, after getting almost no notice last
summer to vacate the Sawmill in Hebron, and having the dog, the only option
available was to move back home, figuring I'd do the Grateful Dead thing
for a bit ("back home, sit down and patch my bones"), then find another place.

Well, when I had to put the Rakmeister to sleep, the one good thing to come
out of that (save for his peace) was that a host of options opened up for
me in terms of housing.

The luxury apartment complex I'm in is handled by the same folks who
handle my brother's complex over in Manchester, CT (home of the famous
Manchester Road Race).  I'm familiar with the quality of the units, and
after looking at these (in Town Brooke) I jumped at the chance.

The proxmity to work (10 minutes) and the proximity to Kim (15 minutes)
had a lot to do with the choice too.

It's got a pool, and there's LOTS o' hills in the area to run on.  I'm a little
familiar with the area, and it is easy to get to also (an easy shot off
Exit 21, I-91).

So, all in all it'll be GREAT until I have to move again for other potential
reasons....8^) 8^) 8^)

It is my concerted opinion that these things work out best when you
both a place to call your own.

If'n you keep both places you can still spend as much time together as
you want, including full time.

However, with 2 places, there's always somewhere to go when you need a
little space, time to yourself, be with other people, etc.

	That's one way of looking at.  However, another is that if you are
	planning on staying together you will need to find out a way to
	work things out if'n you get pissed at each other.  Going off to another
	place usually doesn't solve the problem

Right now two places is ideal.  Maybe later there'll be time to think
about one place.

But, if things were to work out ideally, combining what both individuals
want, we'd need a big place, because ideally (ie all things go exactly
as we'd like) we'd both utlimately work from home.

She's been divorced for a little over three years, and she's got a couple
o' kids.  That's why it's not feasible for her to move out and in with
me.  If anything, I'd move in with her, but it's way too soon for any

It all depends on what you mean by "big".  Among the possible criteria:

	1. place in history
	2. impact on fans
	3. size of gate
	4. press coverage

Clay-Liston was surely an historic fight, but I would agree with Tommy
that Ali-Frazier I was equally so, and it surpasses Clay-Liston on
criteria 2 and 3.  Of course, criterion 3 will apply to about every
third HW title fight yet to come.

SB I was surely historic, but you could make a case for SB III as well,
given the tendency of the New York press and the NY-based national media
to treat anything involving a NY team as being of world significance.  It
(and they) made an ikon of Joe Namath, who never won anything again as
long as he played.

Again, by the criteria above, you could argue for Magic's first title
as the beginning of the NBA's current ascendancy.  As for the '75 series,
it was some of the best baseball anybody's seen before or since, but it
doesn't stand out by the standards I'm using.  Of course, a World Series
rarely does; the most notable exception is the World Series of 1994.

    As for the Clay-Liston, Frazier-Ali, discussion, I cain add some
    perspective, having won money on Clay Liston (as a freshman in high
    school) and lost money on Ali-Frazier (as a senior in vollege).  The
    Clay-Liston fight was much bigger AFTER the event than before.  Most of
    white America viewed Clay as a loud-mouthed nigger who was gonna get
    his.  In contrast, Ali-Frazier had all sorts of subplots, drama,
    intrigue, and bombast.  The buildup made it the most anticipated
    sporting event ever.  And unlike most Super Bowls, the fight lived up
    to the hype.
    
    Here's a short list of "big" modern events for me:
    
    1) 1967 Impossible Dream
    2) Ali-Frazier I
    3) Super Bowl XX
    4) Final Four 1983 - from the Pit in Albuquerque - NC State wins.
    5) 1971 Oklahoma-Nebraska (Johnny Rogers punt return game)
    6) "Do you Believe in miracles?  YES!!!!!
    7) 1984 Final Four - Bird vs Magic
    8) UMass-Syracuse 2nd Round NCAA Tourney 1992

    	My criteria was really solely the anticipation of the event.  The
    status of Ali and his relationship to the Muslims and his draft status
    added to the focus (and yes may have split fans, especially older
    whites; btw I won money on that fight too, only fight too).
    
    	The '67 Redsox stand alone for me thrill wise although it was a
    June - October thing.  Again this was a Boston thing; '69 was a New
    York thing.

      IMO - the biggest Final Four ever was Georgetown vs. UNC.
     One of the best games even though it was decided by a turn-
     over and it was the game that really showcased the Final Four
     as the best annual event in all of sports. The upstart Big
     East, big , scowling John Thompson and freshman sensation
     Patrick Ewing vs. traditional power UNC led by three future

I dunno, but unless my brain cell that controls my memory 
is shot, it was overrated as a "great game".  My recallection
was that I State was outmatched, and that in the second
half Mich. State pulled away to a compfortable lead.

    Bird and co made one comeback in the second half but it wasn't Larry's
    day as he had his only poor college outing of the tournement.  DePaul
    had a pretty good club (regular season top 3) and Bird had a great
    semifinal there; State never was tested in the tourney.
    
    I think Kentucky knocked out Magic the prior year.
    
    Speaking of ballyhooed events, Kentucky-West Texas around '65 was that
    but the game was never close.  Among others (Dampier) the Knicks Mr
    Riley was on that team.
    
    The best "final" was a semi-final; UCLA - NC State in '74.

The stench that was emanating from this past weekends NCAA games
was trul;y galling. Consider that MikeC and Chappy were probably
shi**ing in their pants at the sight of Georgetown barely getting by
Weber State. Throw in the stink of MrT barfing after all
his Big 10 teams were eliminated - with only one of those dreaded
6 making it to the second round. Of course ACCrisp was pis**ng from the
excitement of NC advancing and his precious ACC teams all making it to
the second round. Consider the horror that thoise ACC teams could all
make it to Seattle. The odious nature of the weekend was truly
appalling. And of course we mustn't forget all those dead bodies from
the ritual suicide commited by the Syracuse fans after another classic
CHOKE (Mr G. - is he still around this morning???? :-) Guess you can now
enjoy replacement baseball - what a horrible horrible thought.

Aside from the above stench life is pretty good. I am down in DC area
Monday-Thursday on a 2 month assignment. A bit of a bummer but at least
I have weekends. When are you bozo's planning the next get together? Let
me know even though it sounds like I won't be able to make it.

Finally, an aside to billl and JaKe: if the Pens don't win the Stanley
Cup this year it will be a colossal choke.

I took a look at this and it was way messed up.  

I fixed it up.  A couple of things that I did were I pulled the
DECWRL:: off the internet mail addresses.  We all have different gateways
anyway, so it didn't need to take up the room.  

I marked the email addrs that I thought were incorrect.

Also, until I get his new one, Walt Ashe's home addr is wrong.

I talked with Jake this morning.  It was his last time in the digital office.

He had to come in and sign some papers and stuff. 


He told me that he was having notes withdrawal and was thinking of starting a
self-help group with a 12-step program for other ex-DECcies who miss notes.

But on a serious note he told me he's enjoyed his time off between jobs.  He's
played a lot of golf, and was going to take a trip, but unfortunately his one
of his wife's grandparents died so they had to take a trip to Indiana instead.

They did that and he starts his new job nexted Monday.

He says he hasn't been this relaxed in years and is really looking forward to
his new job.  They've bent over backwards to make him feel welcome, and there
are perks with the job that Digital could never match (not that digital would
ever even think of giving employees perks).

He said to say hi to everyone, and to say that he misses everyone and he wishes
us all well.....

Whilst I was talking with Jake, he gave me some second-hand info about another
infamous sports noter, Dan'l Medvid.

Now I for one, miss ol' Dan and his stories about boating and water polo and
stuff like that.....


As some of you may know, Dan is getting married nexted year.  The wedding
planning has been going on for a while, and the guest list is up to 300 folks.

(That sounds like our Dan -- never was one to do things in a small way)

He and his honey are going to be (or could be right now) taking a vacation in
Greece.  Dan was going to try to get her to go to some Orthodox priest with
him, say a couple of "I do's" and get it done with.  I guess he's feeling that
wedding planning stress.

    Imus had Muni and Criqui on today and the gang were discussing Ike
    Turners new marriage and how anyone could be crazy enough to marry him
    after the movie (?).  So Muni goes

Muni cracks me up big time.....

    Geez, I haven't been in here since April.  Lot of changes, some great
    noters gone, too.
    
    I talked to Hawk a few weeks ago.  He's doing fine.  Just starting a
    new job as Mfg manager for 3rd shift at a small company that assembles
    modules.  He is happy and more relaxed, now that he is back in the
    industry.  Prior to this, he had worked for UPS loading trucks.
    
    Daughter Julie is doing very well with basketball, will be a freshman
    next year at Haverhill High.  She plays on Sunday evenings at Northern
    Essex, so I'm going to try and swing by and see her and her old man.

	Just got off the horn with JaKe.  All's well in his new job. (What

	He's working franticly on getting an internet connection, both at work

The other day I got a VERY nice card in the mail, almost like a wedding
invitation.  I read the return address, and was somewhat puzzled.  I didn't
expect any invitation to a wedding in North Carolina.

When I opened it and read it, the situation became very clear.

I can't remember it verbatim, but here it is as best as I can remember it:


	Dearest relatives and friends, as you read this we will be taking
	a two week holiday in the Greek isles, where we will exchange our
	wedding vows in a small church with a breathtaking view of the
	azure Mediterranean.

	You will all be in our thoughts as we share our marriage sacrament.

	We look forward to our return to the United States as the
	newest members of the Hegalios and Medvid families.

Toll the bell, and muffle the drums, have the company march in the funeral 
step, form ranks along the path into the Garden of Stone, another fine man
has passed from our midst, ain't life a bitch?  Dan'l got hitched....

Firsted, Dan'l went to work for a danged ol' bank and now he up and got
hisself hitched.

I haven't met this fine young lady but having seen several castaways I
would assume that she floats his boat bigtime.

I wasn't surprised he was gettin' hitched.  I figured he'd do that sooner or
later, but I was surprised that he blew off the families and did it on his
own on vacation.

Course, thinkin' back on dan'l's experience with families, I cain't blame him.


I still haven't forgiven him for going to work in a bank though....

     Hey dudes
     
     Big day in the McCullough family today - Lindsey's first day of 
     kindergarten.
     
     No funny stories or cute anecdotes to relate, but I was really a proud 
     daddy.  We have been talking about the day all summer, and Lindsey was 
     very excited.  I blasted out of here at 11:00, and Marcia had switched 
     her day off, so she was already home.  While we were waiting for the 
     bus, Lindsey was getting a little impatient.  I could sense a little 
     bit of nervousness was setting in, something we hadn't seen much of.  
     It all disappeared when the bus arrived, and from my vantage point 
     behind the video camera, I saw a look of confidence about her.  She 
     got on the bus, and Marcia, Melanie, and I hopped in the Caravan, and 
     headed for school.  Well about 20 minutes later, the bus arrived.  She 
     had gotten on the bus with a little girl from down the street, who is 
     a foster child, who had only been with the family down the street for 
     a few weeks, and was clearly overwhelmed with the whole experience.  
     Well, I was particularly proud to see that when they got off the bus, 
     Lindsey had become friends with this girl, and had gotten her to open 
     up enough to talk with her and smile a little.
     
     Well, it was a real bummer to have to head back to work after that, 
     but I did.  Reports from home later this afternoon were that Lindsey 
     had a great day.  They went to the school library, and she picked out 
     a book, with will be the girls' bed time story tonight.  And, of 
     course, when I asked her what her favorite part of the day was, she 
     said "riding the bus!".
     
     Wish I had a personal name in CC:Mail to put "Lindsey is in 
     Kindergarten"...

Yes, but if I were you I'd use 203 for a while yet.

The problem isn't so much with the phone companies across the country, it's
with the programming in the office phone systems.

I used 860 on my cellular phone and was charged a long distance charge.  Good
thing I carefully check my bill, and called and received an apology that they
hadn't programmed 860 in yet, and a credit for the charge.

In the office here, 860 does not yet work....



Area codes used to be set up with 0's or 1's as the middle digit.  I'm no phone
system expert but you don't have to be a genius to know that things were keyed
off of that.  Exchanges (the first three digits of your number) never had a 0
or 1 in the middle.  That scheme is all gone now....

Now, with the proliferation of cellphones, numbers for fax machines and modems
they need lots of new area codes. 


The sad part for us was that they gave those bastards down in Fairfield county
the 203 code and gave the rest of us REAL Connecticut folks the shitty new 860.

I thought they should have done it the other way around 8^(

    The business's down here are none to pleased with the change in area
    codes, for the reasons that you stated.  It is not their phone systems
    that they are worried about, but their customers systems who may not
    recognize anything other than a 1 or 0 as the second digit.
    
    Court action is contemplated by some vendors.

    I'm glad you caught the overcharge, methinks (actually I know, telco
    hasn't changed after all these years) the overbilling doesn't bother
    nynex much.  I had the same thing with a sale on thinsulate gloves
    where the 25% wasn't taken off at the register until I asked for it.

Well, I have a little (Scottish I'm sure) habit of checking my bills.

add says.  I read my bill to make sure that no one has sucked up my number some
place.

Same thing with my phone card.

Cellular phones are more heinous. I have a friend who had his on when he drove
down south, and on the way through New York, they "grabbed" his number. 
Fortunately he wasn't responsible, but I tend to keep my phone off unless I
know someone is trying to reach me, or I'm using it.  I still check my bill
however.....

I'm hooked up with Bell Atlantic.

I'll give you the name of my charge card company if you want.  They've called
on separate occasions to check:

	o  one was a sudden flurry of spending in Florida after the usual
	     charges in NH and MA (it was us on vacation)

	o  one was from us suddenly buying from vendors of a type that we
	     hadn't been frequenting (we were about to have our first child)

We also got a call from Playboy of all people, saying that someone had used
our charge card number but was having the merchandise (gold jewelry) delivered
to a Philadelphia address.  We gave the details to our charge card company, and
it was taken care of, no muss, no fuss.

So, to sum it up - my charge card company is excellent, and I was pleasantly
surprised by the business behavior of the Playboy folks.

Playboy is surprisingly easy to do business with, and they're really nice on

    Anyway, here's a fast update on a couple o' ex-noters 'cause I know
    you're losing sleep ('specially da newly married dan'l!)
    
    MtM left Parlex in October and instead of travelling from Woostah to
    Haverhill, he now travels from Woostah to Sturbridge.  Got a job
    working at Galileo fiberoptics.  Great job and they spread the money
    around quite freely so he's happy.
    
    REK, after getting his CNE thangie, landed a job as the network guru
    at PHCS, a healthcare management company off rte 128.  He really likes
    it too (good OT).  When I get the chance, I'll post his e-mail address.
    
    Oh yeah, MtM doesn't own a PC so he's not connected but he told me that
    he's thinking of getting one for Christmas.

I get a knock on my cubicle and turn around and lo and behold it's Frank
Mendez who has recently taken a job in beautiful downtown Charlotte,
still working for Digital/DEC/us.

Frank and I met here and over the phone. He worked at 1-800-DEC-SALE,
which, on occasion I had a_occasion to call.

When lasted seen, Frank was chasing the fast moving Painters bandwagon
and learning who to cuss for the ineptness of the Hornets.

Well, well, well....

Had a call yesterday, from one John Szabo, aka Hawk to all who know him from
SPORTS.

Hawk says hi to everyone.  He's doing really well.  Last time I talked with
him, about a year ago, he was manufacturing supervisor at a place that makes
circuit boards on the second shift.  Since then, the convinced the owners that
they needed a third shift, and he got to manage it.  He's done reall well, and
shortly should be applying for a first shift opening.

His daughter is doing really well on the hoops court....


He said that he's up for a Patriots Day get together, as always....
He said he'd organize it but he's afraid he'd lose the tickets....

He said for me to tell Karen that he still wants to buy her three drinks.

He said Dan'l's a weenie for getting married like he did...

I'm outta here (or there, I guess, its hard to keep things straight). 
Nicely post this in the sports notesfile for me.  

Now, since they were whacking people in the Phoenix sales
office lasted week, and I had this offer from Intel to work on this 
cool project that I've been involved in from the Digital side, so I 
elected to voluntarily whack myself, except that there was absolutely 
no cheese wiz involved.

The fact is that I have no regrets, except I'll miss the notesfile. I  
can say that I do regret never making it to a get together.  My new 
outside number at Intel is 602-715-8784.  

Let's just hope that everything continues to improve at Digital, I 
liked what I was doing up until the end, despite the bs.  I think
everyone left has a lot to which to look forward.  I hope that Digital 
gets its act together in regards to compensation, however.  

Everyone in the sports notesfile should appreciate what they have.  If,
perchance, they are in Phoenix, please look me up.  We can have a mini 
reunion or get together.  We can talk about who has more trees, Mass or
Arizona, the dominating Arizona Cardingals, or just rip groaner.  I 
never intended to drone on like this and have said what I wanted everyone to 
know, so I'll sign off.

    The axe-bearer plays no favorites these days.  My group, along with
    another Contracts Admin group here were whacked on Monday.  Friday will
    be our last day.  The work is transitioning to Dallas and Alpharetta,
    with no option to go with it.  To the surprise of many people, I will
    be staying in the Chicago area.  I have met a fine lady and it feels
    right to stay and move on to the next phase of my life here.
    
    Although I've participated sporadically the last several years, there
    are many memories I'll take with me.  Dating back to pre-MrT/Schneider/
    ACCrisp/whoever battles to around '85-'86 and Jim Bob Dallas Denver 
    (almost) Crews and his fear of going to bowling alleys due to the 
    "bad element" that hang out there.  :*)  
    
    The Twins winning it all in '87 and '91 were my highlights and of
    course Mike Patch's and my experience buying a press pass for the '91
    Series was quite a story.  My favorite phrase in the 11 years was
    probably MrT's "Reach out and taunt someone."  I actually had the 
    opportunity to work with both Jim Bob Crews in Bedford, MA and MrT
    in Minneapolis.  It was interesting getting the "side stories" from
    them in their adventures.  Jim Bob loved to poke fun at Hoot and MrT 
    at basically everyone.                                   
    
    Thanks 'Saw for monitoring this file and keeping things going.  It was
    a blast.  Take care everyone and when you hear Kirby Puckett's name
    as he's going into the Hall of Fame, remember his biggest fan.

I   'm outta here (or there, I guess, its hard to keep things straight). 
N   icely post this in the sports notesfile for me.  
N   ow, since they were whacking people in the Phoenix sales
o   ffice lasted week, and I had this offer from Intel to work on this 
c   ool project that I've been involved in from the Digital side, so I 
e   lected to voluntarily whack myself, except that there was absolutely 
n   o cheese wiz involved.
T   he fact is that I have no regrets, except I'll miss the notesfile. I  

c   an say that I do regret never making it to a get together.  My new 
o   utside number at Intel is 602-715-8784.  
L   et's just hope that everything continues to improve at Digital, I 
l   iked what I was doing up until the end, despite the bs.  I think
e   veryone left has a lot to which to look forward.  I hope that Digital 
g   ets its act together in regards to compensation, however.  
E   veryone in the sports notesfile should appreciate what they have.  If,

p   erchance, they are in Phoenix, please look me up.  We can have a mini 
r   eunion or get together.  We can talk about who has more trees, Mass or
A   rizona, the dominating Arizona Cardingals, or just rip groaner.  I

	Latest news from the 'burgh...

	A triathalon athlete met with a career ending injury.
	Somewhere between the fishing event and the rock climbing
	event, Rich Jacob (aka JaKe), did a header into the 
	swimming event.

	The result was a broken right arm.  Although the judges
	were impressed with his originality, his not-so-graceful
	landing was reflected in his score.

	It would seem that the judges have reconsidered his scores.
	As it turns out they were impressed by his ability to make
	the transition into the water without spilling a drop of
	his beer...er I mean...Gatorade.

	Finally got a chance to get in here after 2 weeks vaca.
	(It sure is tough getting back into the swing!)

	Spent a fun night with JaKe at Rod Woodson's resturant
	then went to Hooters for "desert".  He sends his regards
	to all the loonies.  Da 'burgh sure has changed for the 
	positive, since I lived there in 1972, but until the MIL 
	moves outa there NH is about as close as I'll ever live.
