| | Did anyone see Da'Bearz crew (Chicago Super Fans George Wendt, etc)
open the show with the letter to McCaskey last Saturday?
It was great, they even had Ditka give the "Live from New York..."
    line.
I love those guys. McCaskey ran some free publicity into the ground
as I can't imagine the skit will continue without Ditka.
Worst move in Bear history, including the Abe Gibron fiasco...
I think they measured a Richter 4.3 directly over Halas' grave last
    week...

Coordinator (can't remember his name), they expect a press conference
    today.
Jerry Jones apparently told him to "hurry up" if he wanted to apply and
get back to start work on the Superbowl. He flew in town yesterday.
From what I saw last night, he may be a good pick. Asst Coach of the

I sure hope that the Bears are the ones that enlist Wannestadt's
services and not the Giants. He is a superb coach who I would
hate to see in the NFC East.

I also feel that he will end up as the Bear's coach because the hardest
place to coach/play is NY. The media is absolutely brutal and
unforgiving. Additionally, I believe that the Bears have a more
talented nucleus to build around than the Giants, who have an
    experienced by older team.

Jimmy Johnson were his reasons for not wanting NY.
Personally, I think that George Young made another BONEHEAD play. Now

| | Jim Brown was certainly more powerful than either Payton or Sayers, but he
didn't quite have the speed of either. I think of Brown as more a fullback,
and the others as halfbacks. From an estetic viewpoint, those who loved
collisions probably liked Brown better, but those who liked speed and
athleticism favored Sayers.
Of course in that era, I liked Paul Horning and Jim Taylor...

and I remember even the Hartford Courant ran articles about knee injuries

I can't help but think that with the tremendous advances in medical
science and technique in the intervening years, that had Sayers blown out
his knee in this era, it would not have been career ending. But for

| | Bears lose Brad Muster to the Saints for a trade up straight in one
Iron Haid Heyward. I kinda like the move, although when Muster was
healthy, he was always the deciding factor on if the offense looked
    good or bad.

He was always out or at 70% with nagging problems (back, hamstring,
etc) and I guess the same could be said of Iron Haid... Iron head
was playing much better over the last two years, I hope he's the
fullback the Bears need, and Anderson comes back to play like he
    can.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (UPI) -- Dennis Gentry, who has run up 4,353 kickoff
return yards in 11 seasons, announced his retirement Monday from the
Chicago Bears.
The 5-foot-8, 180-pound receiver-kick returner is the Bears' all time
return leader and ranks third in the NFL among active kickoff returners.
Gentry was the Bears 1981 fourth-round draft pick from Baylor -- 89th
overall. His 171 catches are 17th in Bears history and his 2,076
receiving yards are 18th.
Gentry's 28.8 kickoff average topped the NFL in 1986, making him the
first Bear to lead the league in a decade.

| | Worley played really well. He even upped the production of Anderson.

Worley, Heyward, and Anderson. If the Bears can solidify the Offensive
Line (which has looked marginally better against the Raiders and SD)
they can really establish the old ground game. With Curtis Conway and
Tom Waddle as wide outs, I hope their offense comes around.

I wish Butler had a better game last week, the Bears could be 5-4 going
into the playoff push. The should have never missed that easy 32
    yarder to beat the Raiders...

I really like Tim Worley. He ran great given the limitations of
working in a system for only a few weeks. Heyward is a monster, sort
    of the "Fridge on wheels"...

| | Bear beat a decent (albeit Montanaless) Cheifs team in a last minute
game with help of a wild turn over. That brings the boyz to 5-5 and
in third place in the NFC-Central (Behind Detroit, The_Pack, and Mini-
    noplace).
If the Bears can stun the Lions at home, I will hope for playoffs, if
not they go down to rebuilding status. Although they lucked a bit with
KC, they unlucked more often this year with other teams. (I'm still
urked at the missed 32 yarder with the Raiderless)
I'd love to see the Bears confident, and 6-5 going into the final
    stretch with a chance...

| | Wide Outs: 1st round pick Curtis Conway is starting to shape up well,
I think Tom Waddle is the best possession receiver playing. Anthony
Morgan (1st rounder from Tennessee) has been a real disappointment, but
    is starting to play better.
Terry Obe(sp?) has come to play. After being cut last year (I think
the Vikings) had come to Bear camp to play ball.
Tight Ends: Weitgnite (sp?) is a great catching TE. The Bearz are
really up on him and extremely happy they had a chance for him.
Running Backs: Neil is 30 I believe. They have a pounding blocking
back (who actually prefers to block) in Iron Head Heyward. The biggest
move of Wanny do date may have been taking a chance on Tim Worley. He
ran great in the last two games. I think Anderson, Heyward, and Worley
    can make a great backfield.
I happen to think once some time comes between Harbough and the Ditka
regime, Jim will pick up some real winner confidence, too. I think
he has all the ability in the world to be a winner. (I like both
PT Willis and Shane Matthews, too)
I think they can work out some problems in the O-line, they'll be in
good shape. The defense is playing great, but I figgered Wanny would
focus in on a good "D".
The best player the Bears have right now is DB Donnell Woolford. The
dude is playing pro-bowl great every game.

Bash baseball all you wish, M Air, but that just amounts to a matter
of taste, where baseball has its fans and football likewise. Your
statement that you'd prefer watching SF-Atlanta over any World Series
game involving Toronto-- actually a pretty exciting team with some
dynamic players that has been involved in two straight memorable World
Series-- speaks for itself. You don't like baseball, which is not the
issue. The fact is that relative to past standards these NFL games
have become incredibly B-O-R-I-N-G, particularly the ones that are
supposedly selected and highlighted for national consumption on Sunday
and Monday nights based on the level of interest. Even the NFL's
staunchest defenders are now admitting that the big college games from
the same damned sport, like the recent FSU-ND and ND-BC games, are
blowing the professionals away in terms of intrigue and excitement.
Fan interest will only move in the same direction.

The NFL needs some new ridiculous rules changes or something to sell to
the masses. In a couple of years with expansion the pool is just going
to be further watered down producing more really bad games that the NFL
will have to sell to TV in the wake of already plummeting ratings.
They really had better be very careful and think ahead because the
vicious cycle looks ripe for turning as it did for baseball.

| | the only reason people find college FB more exciting is there's a ton
more scoring. I watched the BC, VS ND game and wasnt sure if either
team had a Defense playing or not. As for Toronto, they are the 49rs
of baseball, they went out and bought a team. Any team in the top 3
salaries that wins any championship will never impress me. I mean if
some team was stupid enough to sign the top 10 free agents for 3 or 4
years straight and then win 2 or 3 superbowls in a row with a 100M+
payroll I for one would not be impressed. If the 49rs went out and
signed/traded for emmitt smith, troy aikman, michael irvin from dallas
then Andre Rison, and say barry sanders, then add 3 or 4 top OL and
DL, a few Top DB's. Would you be impressed with them winning the SB ?
How many free agents have toronto signed in the past 4 years ? And
Big name free agents at that. The fact that they bought 2
championships in a row makes me lose even more for the game....

I know that the NFL is still vastly more popular than college football,
and it's still slightly more popular than the NBA. But still, relative
to each it's on the decline. Once the monster gets to a certain size

That would be fine, except that after everyone states what they like,
there's always this intent or effort to show that other people are less
because they like something else.
There are very few sports I don't like. Basketball is one of my least
favorite, but I found out last night that I really enjoy watching it
live, at the arena, as opposed to on TV.
To me, baseball is GREAT for summer -- lazy afternoons, a cool breeze,
a couple of beers, time for conversation, kind of a social event.
Football is the fall and winter, and a completely different kind of event....
Heard on WFAN the other day that the Bears could realistically win

You can't say that a team that has one of the highest payrolls doesn't
deserve to be called a Championship team. So what if they did.
Talent costs -- in any venture.
San Fran got their talent through draft picks, but they aren't gonna be
foolish enough to let that talent get away by paying them an inferior
wage.

Da Beerz is playing with mirrors right now and if they make it to the playoffs
will be exposed for the sham they are. No passing game, A lousy QB and a
suspect running game (the pickup of Worley was a great move though).
The NFC Central is once again truley medicore from top to bottom and only by
playing against each other do these teams look good to the rest of the league.
Wannestadt has done good things with the defense but they can't carry a
non-existant offense through the playoffs....
Look for the Beerz to get crushed in a 1st round playoff game against some
decent competition....
I thought the Pck would rise to the top this year but they have been up and
down more times than Mr Whammo's Yo-yo. Favre has been truly mediocre and the
running game non-existant...
Detroit is once again showing what a good RB and a last place schedule can buy
and what a stupid coach can lose. Get Rid of Fontes in the motor city....
Minney is also playing with mirrors. Any team with a place for a shell of a
RB like Roger Craig must be hurting big time....

Can't agree at all. Likely situation sees SF winning home field, Dallas/NY
as second bye team. Chicago is as likely as anyone to win the central
division. The Dallas/NY runner-up gets the home field advantage. So, should
Chicago win the Central Division, they play NO/GB/Detroit/Minnesota at home
in the first round, and have a very good chance to win there. It seems to
me they are very unlikely to be crushed in a first round game, unless they
should be the #2 wild card, and Dallas the #1 wild card, and IMO that's an
 unlikely scenario.

I thought you couldn't play wild card vs. your own divisional winner...
Maybe that was 2 years ago and went away w/ the additional wild card .
Either way I stand behind the statement that when the Bears play outside of
their division in the playoffs they'll get their heads handed to them..even by
the over achieving Giants....

| | I watched the Bears/Packers game last Sunday. It was the most
one-sided game I've ever seen that ended up with the winning team being
    that badly outplayed.

The Packers were pure comedy on offense. The moved up and down the
field all day as they pleased, but when it came time to score, Favre
had a stupid attack. Forcing dumb passes into double coverage and the
topper being the "pass" that slipped out of his hand and him standing
there like a dolt while the Bear player picks it up on his way to
    another defensive TD.

The Bears offense was pretty much pathetic (they didn't score a TD for
the umpteenth game this year) and their defense had more
holes than swiss cheese, but despite Favre throwing for 400+ yards they
couldn't score. For the Bears to be ahead at the half 10-7 was
unbelievable. The Pack should have built up a good 21-24 point lead.

As someone who watches the NFC Central regularly (being a Viking fan in
Bear land) I can say that the only team that really stands a chance of
going anywhere in the playoffs this year is Green Bay. Yet year after
year they find a way to screw it up and come up juuuust short of making
the playoffs. Will they find a way to blow it this year? Probably.

The Bears, Vikes and Lions just aren't very good teams this year. The
Pack could be if Favre played better when it counted.

As for the Vikes running game, well if Dallas, SF or anyone else was
down to their 4th string RB, they would be hurting too. So far this
year they've lost Allen, Smith and Evans to season ending injuries.
Not to mention the Vikes had to fill three offensive line holes by
    players that defected.

Someone will make the playoffs out of the bunch, but unless GB gets
hot, it will definately be blowout city.

| | According to the BEAR REPORT, Chicago is putting Harbough on an out
bound train and are going to shoot for Scott Mitchell as Q.B. I
believe the will keep P.T. Willis and Shane Matthews as back-ups.
They may try to trade up for the kid from Tennessee. I don't think
they could get close to Charlie Ward, although I think he'd be the
    best case scenario...

| | Wal' mebbe they ain't goin fer Mitchell. I kinda like the choice of
Erick. I would have preferred Jeff George better, but I like this more
    than Mitchell.
Mitch may be a great one, but he still has the po' to be another Majic
or perhaps Bubby/Hebert one season wonder. (I know, I know, that's
    really not that fair...)
They also offered a Seattle O-lineman (ferget his name) some cash and
Seattle can match to keep him. The Bears flew wide-out Blades to
    a workout.
Looks like some pre-work for the offense.
On other Bearables, Ironhaid checked hisself into a dependency clinic
yesterday (It is not know the dependency) prolly food.
I am waiting for some of my main defensemen to take a walk. Haven't
heard about anything yet. I figger we probably lose Dent, mebbe to
the Cards, and mebbe one other.
I'd like to see one more O-lineman hop aboard, and draft a monster
    defensive player.
The Bears are also in the running for fullback Johnson from Dallas.
A month away from Stupid bowl and I'm already "jonesing" for football.
    Naturally,

| | Well the Bears are going to get Andy Heck from Seattle. I believe
Heck was picked #1 (15th overall) in '89. They are going to pay
him 10mil for a five year deal.
Don't know much about him other than he played at Notre Dame and
started 70 of 77 games on the upper west-wet side.
    Anyone have anything on him?
A strong line, a new Tim Worley, Erik Kramer as Q.B. and Potential of
locking in Johnson from Dallas or a thinner Iron Haid as FB. I think
that a great receiver, Obe, Waddle, and hope for great things from
our burner 1# pick Curtis Conway (after a disappointing rookie season)
could really turn the offense around.
I would imagine that having a Q.B. that doesn't telegraph the throws
to the receivers may help Conways performance.
I'd like to see one more offensive lineman get snared, and hope beyond
hope that our defense remains intact after this player blitz...

| | With Butty, that makes sense. Although I like Dent, he is, based upon
his age, a minor loss. I think he has one or two super seasons left
in him. People I think would impact the team more are Woolford,
Armstrong, Blaylock, Jones, Gayle, Spellman would impact the defense
    worse...

| | I thought my favorite note would be appropriate for my good byes.
I am fortunate, I guess. I have been able to find a position in
Cincinnati for more money, in a growing company, close to my home,
so I jumped on it. I am outta here July 8th.
Being an area security consultant, I have had to travel much more than
a guy married one year would like to. Also, due to reorgs I was
assigned to New York/New Jersey/New England, and eventually I would
have to move to NYC or Jersey.
My wife and I love Cincinnati, and our little neighborhood (Mt.
Lookout), as well as our home. Golfing is near year round, and
the days are longer (being on the western edge of the eastern time
zone). She is doing very well in her career, so we wanted to stay right
here. (Plus I can make the drive to Solider Field relatively easy.)
I will be working for a computer reseller (Entex Information Services)
and will be their loss prevention/security guy. It may be a golden
opportunity, it may be a mistake. I'll take the odds, betting against
    mother DEC these days...
I hope things go better for Digital. I would be lying if I didn't say
Digital made my career for me. I loved every minute of my time here,
although the constant layoffs and the ever present threat of losing
your job simply wore me out.
Good lick to all of you. I will miss reading you guys clobber each
other. You have made me spit my coffee out many a time!
    Good luck and God Bless.

all-sports rerun last Saturday, and one of the spots was Joe Mantegna
in the roundtable with Mike Myers and a couple of other guys talking
about a certain professional football team from Chicago - da Bears!

It's a real funny skit, and one of the questions they ponder is how the
Bears would do against the Giants if the Bears were all 14" tall, and
how much better they would be if Ditka would stay full size. But even
a 14" Ditka would beat the Giants. Finally, they ask what the score of
the game would be if it was just Ditka - no players - vs the Giants.
Of course, they all think Ditka would win.
