335.0. "Talk Radio" by CSLALL::HENDERSON (Friend will you be ready?) Fri Mar 10 1995 12:43

Talk in the Boston Globe today that Claptrap and Witless may be on the
way out at WRKO and Howie Carr moving to their time slot. Don't know if
I like that or not. I'm tired of C and W..(and the fact that I hear about
5 minutes of talk and 20 minutes of commercials in my 25 min drive to work..
but I guess that's not their fault), but I like Howie (most of the time) in
 the afternoon..

I notice that C & W have had more "guests" lately, with Michael
Goldman filling in for Calptrap this week...

If you want to experience something completely different in talk radio,
there is a clear channel AM station in Cleaveland Ohio called WWWE
(or 3WE) on 1100, which comes in fairly strong in NH at night.
Their new talk jock is named "Jazz McKane" and his show is 10PM
to 2 AM, Eastern TIme. He's kind of a mix of Howard Stern,
Doctor Demento and Rush Limbaugh. Very outspoken, definitely
not a G rated show for the kiddies...

I've received opinion surveys from WRKO twice in the last year. Each
form had a time slot and name(s) of the talk hosts who were on at that
time. The first time I got one I checked off the various WRKO talk
shows I listened to throughout the day. Morning commute - Claprood &
Whitley, Tom Leikis at 10:00 (occasionally) and Jerry Williams on the
    ride home.

Last time I filled one out I checked none of their boxes and wrote a
note on the bottom, saying that Marjorie was making me so nauseous one
day that I started channel surfing.

(She was in one of her liberal tirrades and was truly making me ill. I
decided that I didn't need to have my blookd pressure raised like that
so early in the morning. "Helllllowww" Aaaaarrggh!)

Anyway, I informed WRKO that my channel surfing led to the discovery of
Don Imus on WEEI and that I have not listened to WRKO since.

Imus in the morning ...... !!

I love it when he calls someone a stupid moron, bald-headed stooge or

As for WRKO, I'd like to see Jerry Williams back in the drive-home
time period. I think Howie Carr is capable of having a more
intelligent program, given his background and experience, but
I think he intentionally "dumbs down" his show to what he thinks
his audience will like, and frankly it's getting pretty tedious.
The signal-to-noise ratio is awful... sometimes he spends entire
segments on his own staff members or his endless leering search
    for female interns... wgaf?

Carr belongs in the 7-10 time slot, and Williams in the 4-7.
I don't care what they do with the other ones... I'm not a
fan of Clapprood's politics, but she does do great commercials.
She has that old-style radio pitchwoman's vocal inflections,
right out of the 50's and 60's. Maybe she's found her niche...

Right, but if we use that same logic to say that the TV media is liberal
because that's what America wants then suddenly the rules change.

When conservatives win it's because that's what America wants.

When liberals win is't all some sort of conspiracy where the minds of the

There is a real difference here: There are many forms of media in
the US. One form, often practiced on talk radio, is openly liberal
or conservative. The hosts make no bones about their beliefs and
generally do a good job defending them. Here the people have a clear
choice about what they listen to. In these cases it has
been the result that liberal shows rate very badly.

Another form of media will not claim to be liberal or conservative. In
fact if you ask the people involved in this media they will claim to
have no bias at all. Most media fall in this category. This is
the forum from which most people get their news. It is this group that
many on the right claim are biased towards liberals.

Yet as just about everyone admits, success on TV is based entirely on who
gets good ratings and who does not, maybe even more so than radio. Obviously
the people who watch TV want to hear the "liberals" who are currently on
the air.

  George

But George, the point is not that people are listening to liberals
by choice. They are listening to "mainstream" media. People who
claim to have no political slant.

How many people listen to Dan Rather because he's more liberal than
    Peter Jennings? Probably very few.

Oh...and if it's ratings your intersted in. I understand that more
Americans watch Entertainment Tonight than all three network newscasts

> claim to have no political slant.

What they claim means nothing. If people were put off because the main stream
media were too liberal they'd listen to something else, regardless of what
the people on the air claimed as their label.

> How many people listen to Dan Rather because he's more liberal than
> Peter Jennings? Probably very few.

It's not clear Dan Rather is more liberal than Peter Jennings. They seem
pretty much the same to me.

> Oh...and if it's ratings your intersted in. I understand that more
> Americans watch Entertainment Tonight than all three network newscasts
> combined. (Another sad fact).

If that's what people want to watch then that's their choice. The point
I'm trying to make is that the right wing either believes or does not believe
that ratings drive who gets on the air depending on whether or not it fits
their point of view.

When conservatives outnumber liberals on the radio, that's the people's
choice. When liberals outnumber conservatives on TV (regardless of what
they claim to be), suddenly that's not the people's choice.

Make up your mind, do ratings drive what gets on the air or not?

  George
335.31Apples and oragnesDECC::VOGELMon Mar 13 1995 12:2325
    George, let me try again.

Will you agree that there are two different types of media program,
one that give news facts, and one that give opinion and commentary
on the news. In general most programs fit into one of these to
    categories.

In general most shows which give opinion and commentary (which includes
most all talk radio) are either openly conservative, liberal, or have
a panel of speakers which often contain a mix of liberals and conservatives.
It has been the experience that liberal only shows do very poorly
while openly conservative shows do quite well. Programs such
as these gain ratings largely based upon the opinions of their hosts.

The problem many on the right is with those program that are supposed
to give news facts. The claim is that these shows are biased towards
the left. These show get ratings not based upon the opinions presented
because the opinions are presented in such a hidden way.

You are stating that conservatives want it "both ways". I claim
that you are comparing apples to oranges when you compare opinion
    shows to news facts shows.

    						Ed
335.32HELIX::MAIEWSKIMon Mar 13 1995 13:2716
I don't think your distinction matters. If people truly wanted unbiased facts
and people were truly conservative, they wouldn't tolerate hearing a constant
liberal spin to the news. They'd write in and complain, someone would attempt
an "unbiased" report (read slanted more to the right), the ratings for that
would go up, and the other networks would follow.

I think it's more the case that people who commute to work and listen to
their car radios tend to be split conservative and centrist. The conservatives
listen to talk radio, the centrist have their fill of it at night and listen
to music.

The general population which includes these commuters, housewives and kids
tend to be more left of center which is why they prefer their news that way
at night on TV.

I prefer not to have any one political believe system crammed down my
throat day in and day out, I don't care whether I agree with it or not.
I can't imagine anyone wanting that -- unless they FEEL like a
political outsider, and need their views justified by hearing them over
and over again on the radio or TV.

For talk radio, I prefer "nuetral" programs, like Talk of the Nation.
Or even more, pure entertainment like "Click and Clack."

I get enough biased review of the news here in the 'Box.

I didn't read the story too closely, but the State of Texas has
apparently issued a warrant for the arrest of Howard Stern, following
his disparaging comments about that murdered singer (forgot her

in general. The warrant is for "disturbing the peace" and other
seemingly strange charges that I'll have to go back and look up

that Stern will be arrested if he ever visits Texas.

To me, Stern is usually in bad taste and/or boring (at least since

bad taste was now a criminal act. There's been lots of heat on

some extent on the rest of the nation before we caught on. It's
pitifully simple: first establish a phony association between the
actual evil and the thing that you wish to portray as a real evil,
and then invoke guilt by association.

If you have the mind of a teenager, I suppose this goes over real
big. If you have a bit more on the ball, it's not only absurd, but
makes him look even more simple-minded and incompetently manipulative
    than he did before.

He's currently the beneficiary of a temporary credibility as a result
of the Oklahoma City tragedy. But he's attempting to cast that net
so far and spread it so thinly (extending the new hatred of the
"militia right" to talk shows is bizarre) that he risks becoming
    totally ineffective, as usual.

I've actually only heard the 2 chiks a few times on Saturday AMs. Other
than the fact that they occasionally seem to discuss issues which seem
rather inane (I don't really care how they put on their makeup), I don't
have much of an opinion about them, other than that I dislike their bantering
style, which reminds me of the Nora Dunne/Jan Hooks singing Whatstheirname
sisters on Saturday Night Live (from which I assume they stole the idea).

Sorry to hear Chuck's gone. I rather liked him. I assume that the simulcast
clot on channel 68 is now free as well, then.

But, actually, that's not a prime listening hour for me, anyway.

I think Chuck Adler will be a fill-in guy and it was mentioned in the
report I read that he may be in WRKO's weekend plans. As far as I
know his TV show is still on, but at 4PM rather than 8 to allow for
 Red Sox fiascos..er, games.

I liked Adler as well, and while I enjoy listening to the chiks on Saturday
AM once in a while, I'm a bit disappointed that Adler is gone.

I asked Howie about this last Saturday nite at the Newbridge

Adler was getting killed in the ratings because most people that
would be in his audience tune to Brudnoy.

So RKO counters with a show for the mindless crowd.

Levy is gone as well. Thankfully.

I was just about to say this. He is the only other talk show host in Boston,
who comes close to Brudnoy, in talking sense and calling a spade a spade.
Of late I liked Adler more than Brudnoy because of the kind of more down-to

"Adler is someone who I tried, watching his tv show once."

In this scenario, Adler was in the room with him while they were both

There I go again, failing to fit in.

Everytime I tune in to Brudnoy I think he's reading fairy tales at
someone's bedside. He doesn't have the sort of radio voice that gets
one incensed about the issues.

Chuck Adler, on the other hand, has the sort of voice that can really get
you fired up about the issues.

    Bonnie,

You have to realize that Di has a long memory and wanted to throw in
that subtle dig about me liking smooth jazz..

Like any other sort of music, it can be overplayed and the songs can
    get to the "gak" stage.

There are some nice songs by Kenny G. that you don't hear over and
over and they are easy to listen to. Same with Sade... although most of
the artists are not as well known as these...

I get enough stress here at work to meet deadlines, I don't need to
get pre-stressed on my way to work. I tend to take the back roads and
will stop at a pond/swamp/field to check out the birds and take the
occasional photo.. whilst listening to smooth jazz, of course... ;)
