    Most of the week days I'll be at Daytona Int'l Speedway, but we
    stay in Orlando.  If you are familiar with the area around this time
    of year you'll know why we have a place outside of Daytona.  Plus it's close
    to Disneyland/etc... so wife/grandma and my kid(s) can run off to
    spend money, er, sightsee while me and my pop are at the speedway.
    Evenings or on Friday should work on this end, or stop on by our

    Yeah, I noticed from other note that our politcal opinions don't
    always match exactly. But It would still be fun to try to get
    togather. As we (party of four, including my wife)haven't made any plans
    beyond just going to Orlando yet, any time would be fine. Evenings
    would work well, as my wife is going to want to do the Disney,
    Universal Studios, Sea World Thing. I do want to go to the coast one
    day that I'm there, so we could drop by your Condo then. Which one is
    it, by the way. We actually own a timeshare week in Daytona at the
    Americano beach lodge. We traded that week for a week in Orlando this

	Well, I'll admit to being a little cheeky today, Jack.	:^)

	Actually, though, I can remember a period during childhood
	when going to The Dump was a big deal for me...  it's tough
	growing up in the sticks, you know.

	I need some info (maybe from Mark Battis?) on a possible stopover
	in Chicago.

	At the moment I have a Toronto - San Jose flight booked on Tuesday
	March 21, returning L.A. - Toronto on Sunday April 2nd.

	What I was wondering was whether or not it was worth it to take
	the earliest flight to Chicago (gets in around 9:40am) and then
	the lastest flight to San Jose (leaves Chicago 6:25pm)?  Is the
	city easily accessible from the airport?  Is it going to cost me
	a fortune in transportation?  Will I be panicked trying to get
	back to the airport?

	Right now I have a flight that leaves Toronto at 1:34pm and connects 
	with a 2:55pm flight out of Chicago to San Jose.  I've never been
	to Chicago and am trying to figure out if I can have a quick look
	around in about 4-5 hours.  I guess that means I'd have to get my
	luggage stored again before the 2nd flight and also clear customs
	in Chicago... not sure about that.

    With only 4-5 hours you could see part of the city, but would really 
    need a whole day to really see Chicago. The museums are spread out
    along Lake Shore Drive, which would mean taxi cabs. English speaking
    drivers are preferred :-)  If you wanted to see the Loop, State St
    and Michigan Ave you can take a train from O'Hare to there. Not sure
    about cost or schedules though. Cost should be pretty cheap, and you
    could be back in time for your flight. 
    
    You can always people watch at O'Hare, we have all kinds of weirdos
    for your viewing pleasure :-) :-) If all else fails and you have a
    couple of hours to kill, they have a couple of good lounges to kick
    back in and drink.

Mark - Thanks for all the info... I've figured out a different plan and will 
save Chicago for a trip where I drive myself there and have more than a day 
to spend - also a time of year when the weather will be more condusive to 
spending the day outside walking around.

Now.... is Bob Ainsley still around??  I need some Texas info.  I found out 
that my flight from Toronto - San Jose,Ca will allow me a stopover in 
Dallas.   I plan to fly to Dallas on either Sunday or Monday (end of March) 
and then get a flight right away to San Antonio ($120CDN) I will have to 
be back in Dallas Tuesday afternoon for a 5pm flight to San Jose. 

If Bob (or anyone else) could help me with a few queries, I'd appreciate 
it....

	Will a car rental be necessary or is there enough to see around
	the riverwalk area of San Antonio that I won't need one?

	If no car - what is the best/cheapest way from the airport
	into the downtown area?

	Anybody have suggestions on places to stay/eat near the riverwalk?

	Besides the Alamo, what are a few things I *must* see in a day
	or two?

I heard there was river tubing north of the city which I would love to try, 
but I guess the water would still be pretty cold and I also guess this would 
mean I need the car rental...

Any help is (as always) much appreciated.

Trip to the Florida Keys, April 16th-22nd, is a go.  For a change of
pace, we're renting an RV and driving down on a non-stop haul
from Massachusetts (3 or 4 adults will be making appearances
at the wheel).  Renting a 2-bedroom accommodation on Little
Torch Key.

The fishermen are thrilled.  The fishing widow loves any warm,
tropical locale and is also planning to go swimming with
dolphins.

TAY2 this afternoon, then back to ZKO, Coopers tonight, before the exciting
trip to Mont Vernon for the evening, then back to TAY2 in the AM, Corned
Beef and Cabbage lunch at the Exit 4 Holiday Inn, and ZKO for the afternoon.

The excitement and the pace is almost more than I can handle.

Tomorrow will be my last day at work for 2 weeks and I can't wait!  Why 
must one always experience the week from hell before going on vacation? 
I am heading over to San Jose - hope the rains have stopped!  Imagine the 
irony - it has been gorgeous, sunny and almost 70 the last 3 days here in 
Toronto, and I go to California and get the crap weather.  Oh well, my 2nd 
week will be spent in L.A. and Baja (Rosarito?) and I hope the weather 
will be improved down south.   I deserve it after the last week!  8*)

    sorry- next big storm is due to roll in off the pacific tomorrow and
    it'll drench us through Sunday or so.  Next week might be ok but the

I was in San Antonio on March 20-21.  Great place to visit.  If you're 
looking for cheap accommodations, the Motel 6 ($37.95) is located right 
beside the Market, a short (15 min) walk from the River Walk and it also 
has an outdoor pool.  I would recommend Casa Rio for a great Mexican 
dinner.  And, if you have the time, the Mission Trail is worth the trip.

Mint Julep:
   Take one tall glass (or mason jar). Fill anywhere from half to full
   with crushed ice. Pulverize a decent quantity of fresh mint leaves/stems
   in a mortar with some sugar for abrasiveness. Dump the crushed mint
   on top of the ice in the glass. Pour 1 to 2 jiggers of simple syrup
   over the crushed mint. Fill glass the remainer of the way with good
   Kentucky Bourbon. Stir. Garnish with a sprig of mint. Sip your way
   into oblivion.

    
    I planted mint in my herb box this year, but I'm not sure if it'll be

 Lovely Paterson, NJ on the 14th of May to visit my kid brother..seems our 
 big brother (now 51 =:-O ) is coming to town from Calif..haven't seen him
 in ~15 years or so..last time I saw him he was in the pokey.

    A trip to the delightful village known only as Shoiley 
    to play em Lego with Onondaga.  Also, to meet a person
    hailing from the great state of Maryland, where the
    highway patrolmen are quite polite and forgiving, I
    must say.

    The genny will be snug.  I use the sheets to tie a towel off to to use
    as a wind scoop for the forward hatch.  That and I always set a second
    anchor in the Bight.  We usually enjoy ourselves way too much at the
    Wm. B. Thornton and I for one do not relish the idea of anchor dragging
    antics at 02:00 when I am three sheets to the wind ;-).

	A leisurely drive to fair New Haven, Connecticut on the shores of
	   the beautiful Long Island Sound, commencing around 10AM, and then
	A quick park of the car in the secure garage facilities near the
	   commuter rail station, followed by
	Boarding the luxurious commuter train which will take me with lightning
	   speed to,
	The Glorious Grand Central Station in lovely downtown Manhattan.
	The next option is open, whether by bus or other method to that
	   marvel of 20th Century architecture, La Guardia International
	   Airport, to await my early evening flight on
	A technological miracle - a 727 whisking me off to that city of
	   excitement and intrigue, New Orleans. (And a dinner flight
	   to boot.)
	There to pick up a reserved luxury sedan (capable of seating two
	   with some effort) already reserved and waiting for me from a
	   purveyor of the name "Value Rent-a-Car". In this coach I shall
	   transport myself in comfort to the heart of the Bayou in
	   Lafayette, Loooooosiana.

	Where I will pig out on bodacious Cajun food and drink drive-in
	   dacquiris for three days before returning via the same
	   circuitous route on Monday, May 15th.

Didn't they just have some tumultuous weather in New Orleans?

Yes - something like 18" of rain in New Orleans yesterday.

Realizing the complexity of the travel plans, I shipped the suitcase
ahead of me via UPS - it's already at my daughter's house waiting
for me so I only have to carry  - well, not much of anything! I'll
ship it back the same way.

Yes, I could have flown out of Boston or Manchester but it would have
cost me almost twice as much. I got these reservations in January
for $204 roundtrip, LaGuardia-NewOrleans-LaGuardia.

    OK - here's my recipe for piri-piri.  I put it in my DEC OSF/1 Chili
    Kontest entry and won first prize.  Me, a lowly Brit.
    
    get a jarful of those read hot chinese peppers, scotch bonnets,
    jalapenos and add 50-50 good olive oil and cheap whiskey
    (Passport).  Stick in fridge for at lease a month and squash down
    the chillies.  Add more chillies.  Keep adding stuff every time
    you remove some of the the sauce to use.   Peaks in about 18 months.
    
    Use on the barbie, brushed on chicken.  Add as a booster to vindaloo.
    Spray on potential attackers.  Gargle to remove morning breath.
    
    

Sounds like a laugh, but what's a `Scotch bonnet'?  I may have to
do my weekly washing up early to provide a bowl if I find out...

    only" mode (which I'm sure some of you think is the only mode
    I'm ever in); on occasion I'll stop in and "make a deposit"
    if I find something interesting wandering around in cyberspace...

     I'm leaving tomorrow for "Newfoundland (  :*)  )" for an all too short
    2 week vacation. Going to Goss Mourn National park, and I would highly
    recommend it to anyone who happens to be in the area. There is a
    mountain range that is red. Just like Mars. It has almost no vegitation,
    so if you frame your picture right, you can say your vacation was out
    of this world, and have the pictures to prove it.
    
     Enjoy our east coast, I know I will.

    you can drive to North Sidney in NS, and take a 6 hour ferry to NFLD.

    We are driving the first night from W. Bridgewater, MA to Bangor, ME.
    Stay overnight in Bangor, and the next morning driving through NB to
    a place about 20 miles north of Fredrickton, near the Fundy Natnl.
    park.  Staying there 4 days, then going to NS.  Staying on the
    Minas Basin for a few days, then down to just outside of Halifax for
    the Harry Chapin Music Festival at Ovens National Park.  From there we
    will be driving up to take the ferry to P.E.I.  Few days there, then I
    think the ferry back to NS, drive up to where the ferry leaves for NF.
    Stay there several days, then cruise to Lab.  Cruise back to NF. 
    Cruise back to NS.  Drive to Yarmouth, NS.  Ferry to Bar Harbor, ME. 
    Drive to Bangor and stay overnight again.  Drive back home.

    I think it may be shorter to drive through to Calais, ME over to 
    Campobello Island, and take the car ferry across to NB 
    ~St. Andrew-by-the-Sea.
    
    We took this route when we went to Fundy about 8 years ago,
    and the ferry was inexpensive and fun.  I do not know what the
    crowds would be like, since we went on Labor Day and the ferry
    holds about 4 cars at a time.  But it was neat, and Campobello
    Island is worth a look-see as well.
    
    Have fun, I'm envious, Fundy was one of the best vacations I've
    ever had.... :-)

    from there because we want to stop in Fredrickton on the way to the
    campground we're going to be staying at.
    
    I really wanted to go to Campobello and Grand Manan (sp?) also, but we
    have so many things to do already that Alan finally put his foot down
    and said 'That's Enough!' :*)
    
    Everyone I've spoken to has had the same reaction as you!  They
    absolutely *LOVED* the trip up there.  I'm really looking forward to

    We camped our way up to Fundy and found if we stuck to the
    Provincial Parks we had excellent accommodations.  Private
    campgrounds didn't fare as well.  I particularly remember a
    fragrant night in St. Andrew's-by-the-Sea with a site on the
    side of a hill downwind from the Porta-Potties which I would
    swear hadn't been empited all summer......
    
    If you do ever go to Campobello, the Provincial Park there
    (Herring Point?) is lovely and *right* on the beach.
    
    Oh and don't foget to stop at Reversing Falls, Magnetic Hill
    and the Hopewell Rocks :-) :-)

    about halfway between Fredrickton and Fundy Natnl. Park.  The sent me

My 2 cents..... Magnetic Hill is a waste of time - you sit
in a line of cars for however long just to drive to the
bottom (top?) of a very short hill with hardly any slope and
then experience the "magic" There is nothing else to see
in the area, unless you are into trashy/cheap souvenir shops.
Of course, it's been about 12 years since I was there, so
maybe things have changed. Fredricton is great - some
beautiful homes to see along the river. And I also recommend
the Cabot Trail - there is a great Gaelic camp and museum you 
can stop at near the top - I was especially interested because
they had a "Giant MacCaskill" display, and I am distantly 
related on my mothers side.  I believe there is a place in
PEI called St. Anne's that has great all you can eat lobster
dinners in a number of the local churches. And, the Charlottetown
Festival should be on - "Anne of Green Gables" (the musical)
being the annual attraction.

Actually, if you're travelling by car, it's damn near impossible to get
from any of the populous portions of Qu�bec to the island of Newfoundland
without going to Nova Scotia first.  Going from Boston to Newfoundland
via Qu�bec would be somewhat out of the way.  There are two ferrys off
the south side of Newfoundland, both of which go to Sydney, NS.  There
are two ferrys off the north or northwest side of Newfoundland, one of
which goes to Goose Bay, Labrador, the other to an otherwise completely
isolated strip of road about fifty miles long linking a tiny bit of
Qu�bec with a tiny bit of Labrador.

I went to Newfoundland a bit less than a year ago, but not by car.
I flew to France (St. Pierre) and took the jet boat from there.

I was thinking that maybe some you might want to come up to Toronto at the 
end of November?  I organize a charity ball for the Cancer society every 
year and this year it will be on Saturday November 25th.  I could then also 
host a boxbash at the new homestead (which should be in better shape by 
then) on either Friday or Sunday?  It might be a little cold for trou 
dropping at that time of year, but ya never know!

Course if the masses can't wait that long and would rather do something in 
Sept/Oct, that too could be arranged!

    TurkeyDay.  Kids on the Coast 'n' all.  Otherwise, Toronto would indeed
    be a hoot.  Yonge Street, all them brick hice, nice town.  At least it
    wuz when I was offered a Professorship there in 1969 but my Draft Board
    said "No WAY, you vill teach in a United States State University, und
    are NEFFER to go to dat den of draft-dodgers." 
    
    But I digress.

    My plans are now set !
    
    November 1st - Quit work.
    November 4th - Go to Queensland to visit relatives and go horse back
    riding for dawn till dusk.
    November 15th - Return to Sydney for a knees up with the lads
    November 18th - Leave Sydney, bound for Bali 
    December 15th - leave Indonesia (from where I don't know) bound for
    London, via Jakata - Abu Dabi - Zurich.
    
    THEN PARTY OVER CHRISTMAS !!!!!!

    thanks Mr. T... one of the things we didn't want to do was run around
    alot but to drink up an area (so to speak) :-). we also wanted to 
    avoid the peak tourist times so we were thinking of mid-Sept.
    
    we got Fodor's on Ireland. interesting and informative. my wife has yet
    to put it down.

Friday - Downingtown, PA via Bethlehem, including lengthy evening stint
	at a leetle establishment known as Casa Grande near Exton, PA
Saturday - Lancaster, PA Outlet Supermall followed by superpool evening
Sunday - West Chester, PA for private consumption of BBQ'ed tenderloins
Monday - Drivin' back tru Joisey yet agin, said journey salvaged only
	by a respite at White Castle upon reentering the Empire State

You miss all the good parts of NYS going the route I suspect
you'll take (I-84, Expansion Joint Hell ..thump..thump..thump)

I-84 only from Sturbridge (I-90) to Hartford (I-91) Madman. The only
bit of NY I get on this route is through lower Westchester and Rockland
counties.

    I'M BACK! :*)  What a totally awesome trip!  Probably the
    best vacation I have EVER had in my ENTIRE LIFE!!!  :*)
    It was SO GREAT!!!  I loved every single minute of it!
    Even getting hit with the 60-70 mph winds left over from
    the hurricane, having some of our camping equipment ruined,
    and spending a night in a hotel till we could get to a store
    to replace the destroyed tarps, etc.  Scary, but cool! :*)
    
    Shall we have a boxbash?  I brought home 8 rolls of pictures,
    fossils, panned gold, and Parsboro amethyst that I found on the
    beach!  :*)

    Saturday, we left Bangor, Maine, and headed towerds home.
    Just before Augusta, the traffic slowed to a stop.  We though it
    was road construction.  There was alot of it on Rt. 95 all the
    way to and from Canada.  When we got up to where we could see what 
    the hold-up was, it was the border patrol!  They were checking every
    car!  Don't know why, but they had alot of cars pulled into the
    rest stop there, and had all kinds of baggage and luggage and camping
    equipment strewn all over the ground around all the cars.
    
    It was very strange.....and so far from the border too!
