    Once again Dick, you shot in the dark and missed. Ya see, I'm most
    certainly conservative and right wing, but I happen to believe that
    the government has _no business_ in the abortion business... either
    way. I happen to be more "pro-choice" than "pro-life" in politics.
    But I'll go a step further. I once asked some of the other people
    you mention... Oppelt, Martin, Benson, et al, what they wanted to
    see be done about abortion (in terms of legislation) and I got
    the strong impression from them that they did _not_ feel that
    government intervention was the solution to the problem... even
    if it was the government intervening on their behalf.

    Some of them I must admit I don't even have characterized as political

    In truth, I see very few "unreasonable" arguments. I see a lot
    of "principled" arguments... people who oppose/favor something
    based more on general principle than on the facts pertaining
    to a particular issue. But such arguments are certainly *not*
    confined to any "side". For example, they are the types of
    arguments which separate the Republicans from the Democrats.

    This is the "I know the answer" type of arrogance that I referred
    to earlier. I read the same figures you have, but I still probably
    have a different perspective on those figures than you have...
    a different perspective by your definition apparently is equivalent
    to a bad throw of the dice, and my penalty is a seat in the
    Bircheristic Stupidity camp. The truth is, that no matter what
    spin you put on the numbers of the 80s, the truth is that the
    whole procecss was setup long before Ronald Raegan, and that his
    defense spending, his tax cut -- all of his fiscal policies --
    were fairly minor players in the end result.

TASTY INSECT RECIPES
====================

Bug Blox
--------

2 large packages gelatin
2 1/2 cups boiling water (do not add cold water)
Stir boiling water into gelatin.  Dissolve completely.   
Stir in dry-roasted leafhoppers.

Pour mixture slowly into 13 x 9 inch pan.  Chill at least 3 hours.   
BLOX will be firm after 1 hour, but may be difficult to remove from  
pan.  Cutting blox:  dip bottom pan in warm water 15 seconds to  
loosen gelatin.  Cut shapes with cookie cutters all the way through  
gelatin.  Lift with index finger or metal spatula.  If blox stick, dip  
pan again for a few seconds.

Banana Worm Bread
-----------------

1/2 cup shortening
3/4 cup sugar
2 bananas, mashed
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup chopped nuts
2 eggs
1/4 cup dry-roasted army worms

Mix together all ingredients.  Bake in greased loaf pan at 350 for  
about 1 hour.

Rootworm Beetle Dip
-------------------

2 cup low-fat cottage cheese
1 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
2 tablespoons skim milk
1/2 cup reduced calorie mayonnaise
1 tablespoon parsley, chopped
1 tablespoon onion, chopped
1 1/2 tsp. dill weed
1 1/2 tsp. Beau Monde
1 cup dry-roasted rootworm beetles

Blend first 3 ingredients.  Add remaining ingredients and chill.


Chocolate Chirpie Chip Cookies
------------------------------

2 1/4 cup flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs
1 12-ounce chocolate chips
1 cup chopped nuts
1/2 cup dry-roasted crickets

Preheat oven to 375.  In small bowl, combine flour, baking soda and  
salt;  set aside.  In large bowl, combine butter, sugar, brown sugar  
and vanilla;  beat until creamy.  Beat in eggs.  Gradually add flour  
mixture and insects, mix well.  Stir in chocolate chips.  Drop by  
rounded measuring teaspoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheet.   
Bake for 8-10 minutes.

 I took a tour of Federal Express a couple years ago (amazing place) and
 whilst walking about as the masses were dealing with the seemingly never
 ending parade of packages, I had the urge to grab one of them and toss it
 in the dumpster and then call and try to trace it.

Interesting (to me) sidebar -

Over the past several years when I've had packages that I've shipped with
UPS where I wanted to be absolutely sure of delivery, I've used a feature
known as Delivery Confirmation Service, whereby I fill out my address on
a card and the delivery driver is supposed to have the recipient sign the
card which is then supposed to be mailed to me, like USPS RRR. Everytime
I've paid for this service, it has failed (I don't get the card back) and
I've had to request a refund. The last time it happened (when I shipped
my daughter's PC to her in LA in January), I was contacted by a regional
account agent for UPS who was extremely apologetic and desirous of being
helpful. He set me up with a UPS shipper number account, and sent me
about a ten year supply of preprinted barcode labels for ground, 1st day
air, and 2nd day air shipments, along with the book I fill out for
shipments and have signed when I drop off my packages - then they bill
me weekly for my shipping charges. Along with all of this, he sent me
a 3.5" diskette including Maxi-Track for Windows, which allows me to dial
in to UPS' network and check on the status of any of my shipments and
tells me about delivery time within minutes of actual delivery.

The interesting tie-in to FedEx is that UPS was independently audited
sometime within the last few years and discovered that they were hopelessly
behind the times regarding electronic tracking and reporting systems
relative to FedEx. Thus they launched a major upgrade campaign which
resulted partially in the Maxi-Track system. It was apparent from the
way this acct rep bent over backwards in trying to get me set up for
this that they are really serious about keeping level with, or ahead
of FedEx.

Damn thing appears to only work with Netscape -- at least the versions

    I believe that Netscape is at present the only HTML Level 2 browser
    available.  Since many Web providers are jumping on the enhanced
    features of Level 2, this leaves Mosaic even further behind than it was
    before.

It works really good for finding any small business, but it appears to be
really screwed up for companies like DEC:

I've noticed a number of errors in the NYNEX Yellow Pages listing obtained
when one specifies "Massachusetts" and searches by business name for
"Digital Equipment Corporation".  I've attached a text version of the
results of the search.

The first error is that a number of the companies which appear in this listing
are not in any way associated with Digital Equipment Corporation, but they
appear as a result of the search, and more seriously, they have the WWWeb link
"http://www.dec.com/" associated with them.

The second error is that the first listing shown for "Digital Equipment
Corporation", the one with the phone number of "000-366-0445" (and with
an address of 150 Flanders Rd, Wbro, Ma. 01581 in the detailed info) is
in error.  That number, when supplied with Westboro's area code of 508,
rings at a private residence.

I felt that this error was important enough that I took the initiative of
reporting it directly to you.  Although I consult for our Telecommunications
Department on a semi-formal basis, that is not my primary job at Digital, and
I will refer the remainder of the issues to people who have both the
responsibility and authority to work with NYNEX to correct the remainder
of the errors.

Well, I get a yellow button with an eye and the words "SEARCH NOW".

There are a lot of problems with the user interface, and since they're
the phone company, they probably won't get fixed.

I don't know what you were doing wrong; maybe you didn't wait for the images
to load.  The business category search page is really poorly designed; the
stupidity of having 26 separate little .gif files with each letter of the
alphabet makes it rather slow to start up!

    I'm having the same problem you describe.  At work I have two means to
    access the web.  (1) With Mosaic running on a vax that my
    workstation is hooked to, no problem connecting to the soapbox page.
    (2) However with netscape 1.1b running on a pentium hooked to a vax, i
    get the same long wait, no connect, that you mention.
    
    I don't know what the problem is, really don't care to investigate.  I
    do know it isn't a "firewall" problem since both means can connect to
    pages within the firewall.

    Yes, of course it does.  Unfortuntaly, my FTP doesn't go in and
    change all references of .htm in the source files to .html on
    the upload.  And without that, staging and testing locally isn't
    much of a option.

    I don't know if you know this, but all you have to do is "click"
    on the highlighted text, and it automagically whisks you to the
    appointed URL.  No need to type it, no need to worry about file
    names, whether they be .htm, .html, or .foo.  Pretty cool, eh?

 This is cool, but it would be a lot cooler at 56k baud, a gallery of
 fantasy/creepy/mysterious snagged off the net and arranged in a sort

    Why not? It does for me. What doesn't work about it?

If you are using NOTES/NODECWINDOWS and have the mouse turned on in Notes,
then you won't be able to cut from Notes with the mouse, unless you can
figure out what keys to hold down to reenable the mouse for one action.

In VTSTAR on a Mac it's "Command+Control".  I haven't bothered to
figure out what it is on a Motif VT320 window, or even if there is
such a thing.

Until I figured that out in VTSTAR, I always had to use the following:

define_key('set(mouse,off)',key_name("N",shift_key),'NoMouse',"NOTES$USER_KEYS");

With these two commands in my NOTES$COMMAND.TPU initialization file, if I
wanted to cut from Notes, I typed "PF1-N" and then cut; "PF1-M" then turns
the mouse back on.

    	double-clicking on your node::name in the Decterm session [which
    	immediately selects the Decterm session as the current window]
    	with the left button and then single-clicking in the "Open loc-

    	"Open location" boxes are re-selected as the current window when
    	I hit the right button, but nothing is inserted into the box.

Since you're using excursion, my earlier comments about the VT320 emulator

Possibly the version of Notes on Wahoo isn't turning on the mouse in
NOTES/NODECWINDOWS.

Or Glenn could be right that Windoze doesn't support cut and paste from
one application to another.  Wouldn't surprise me, which is why I'm a
Mac bigot.

    Cut the URL into a DECterm, or notepad deal... then cut&paste it
    from there into netscape.

    One of the more interesting courses that I took in college was a
    "Nuclear Waste Management" course.  Of the things that was brought up
    in the class was that there was a fall-out shelter underneath the 
    bridge that was used as ground zero at either Hiroshima or Nagasaki (I
    can't remember which).  There was a 12-year old girl in the shelter
    that survived.

    Also interesting to note, the bridge at ground zero also survived the
    blast.  Examining the metal stress fractures on the bridge, engineers
    determined that the bridge was forced to ground level by the blast and
    then bounced back up into place.

    My problem is growing up in the nuclear age.  My mind equates bomb
    shelter with fall-out shelter.  Of course there would be differences

    Last pre-nuke bomb shelter I saw was built right on top of the Red
    Canyon fault in southwestern Montana.  Until August 17, 1959, it was
    probably safe.  After then, the big 20-foot ditch that an earthquake

gift to the Internet," Digital Equipment Corp. today started 
offering free public access on the Web to the company's new 
Altavista "super spider" and indexing technology, billed as up to 
100 times faster than other Web search engines, said Digital's 
Alan Jennings and Louis Monier, in a conference call with 
Newsbytes.  

The Alpha-based Altavista is able to search and index up to 2.5 
million pages per day, according to Jennings, who is Digital's 
manager of advanced technology business development. In internal 
use at Digital over the past few weeks, the super spider has 
already searched some 60 million pages, or about half of the Web, 
he contended.  

In contrast, Lycos has only searched about 7 million Web pages, 
and the World Wide Web Worm, its closest competitor, about 3 
million pages, added Monier, who leads the research team at 
Digital that created Altavista.  

Altavista's search speeds are made possible by the ability of the 
super spider to algorithmically "breed" batches of smaller Web 
crawlers, together with the use of Alpha processing power and 
high-speed ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) networks, according 
to the two Digital officials.  

The new Altavista Web site also offers other capabilities that 
are hard to find elsewhere on the Web, Monier maintained. For one 
thing, users can search not just for text, but for hotlinks on 
the Web, "so they can see what other Web pages are pointing to 
their pages."  

In addition, Digital is posting copies of actual UseNet news 
pages on the Altavista site, for direct access by the many end 
users who do not have the "set-up" to access these pages directly 
themselves.  

The Altavista software, developed at Digital's Palo Alto research 
labs, consists of two components, Newsbytes was told. The super 
spider itself resides on a "small" Alpha server, whereas a large 
SMP (symmetric multiprocessor) Alpha 8400 Turbolaser is used to 
host the Web site and to perform indexing.  

From the smaller Alpha, the large spider dispatches members of 
its brood to multiple sites throughout the Web. But, said Monier, 
to prevent search delays, or latency, the smaller crawlers are 
only allowed to search about 1,000 pages at a time on any one Web 
site. "We then give that site a rest for a few weeks."  

Joked Jennings: "So it is a polite spider, too." Currently, 
Altavista is being run with the use of two processors on the 
Turbolaser SMP machine, Jennings noted. "But the machine is

Digital, he added, is offering free access to the Altavista Web 
search and indexing technology as a way of obtaining public 
evaluation and feedback.  

"We're also interested in establishing business partnerships 
around Altavista," he acknowledged. Thirdly, Digital expects that 
Altavista will help to "showcase Alpha's high horsepower," 
according to the Digital manager.  

Digital has not yet decided how Altavista will be employed 
commercially. "But it will probably have some very unique 
business uses in the future," Jennings reported.  

Monier told Newsbytes that, during the several weeks of internal 
use, Altavista was accessed by about 10,000 users within Digital. 
"Usually, they looked up references to themselves or their 
families first. Then they tried to find old friends and college 
roommates," he explained. Digital employees also used Altavista 
to find information about the Web, conduct market research, and 
look up facts about travel destinations.  

Analysts were strongly impressed with Altavista's search and 
indexing power. "At 2.5 million pages a day, Digital's 
specifications are really hi-test,'" said Greg Kline, director, 
Network Integration and Management Research, at the Business 
Research Group.  

"Altavista is like a spider on steroids," agreed Jim Green, an 
analyst at Summit Strategies. "I was expecting to see something 
(on the Altavista Web page) like, `Caution. You're using an 
Alpha. You might burn your fingers.' But there's none of that 
kind of self-promotion," the analyst told Newsbytes.

    What the hell is a Haggii?!
    
    This is copied from the Haggii Homepageand it didn't help me at all:
    
    Numerous types of haggii abound in the highlands, mainly the common
    haggii, but the sea haggii can be found in the North sea and it's cousin 
    the freshwater haggii in some Scottish lochs. The Prehistoric haggii has 
    been extinct since the Mesozoic Age along with the rest of the dinosaurs. 
    It is believed that the Death's Head Haggii has eventually been made
    extinct in Scotland, due to the Removal of Poisonous Haggii Act (1863).
    This act was brought in due to the large numbers of deaths of sheep, cows 
    and other livestocks farmers in Scotland suffered. A human bitten bt the 
    Death's Head Haggis very rarely dies but is just very nauseous or, in 
    extreme cases falls into a coma. The Vietnamese pot-bellied haggii is also 
    now extinct due to the defoliation in vietnam by the Americans during the 
    Vietnam war.

    Altavista was given "Cool Site of the Day" status today.
    

    We must learn, little cybernauts, not to confuse our new sensory
    modalities.  You can tell radar because the data tend to fade out at
    horizon-of-visibility distances, and because of the little circular
    artifacts caused by digitizing the circular sweeps of the beam. 
    Satellite data, OTOH, are far more likely to be labeled IR or Visible,
    and to have those nifty lines-on-the-ground added to real images,
    rather than over gray nothingness.  Radar provides only signal,
    satellite both ground and its cover, the latter being the interesting
    part.
    
    Class dismissed.
