    Seriously, I am leaving voluntarily, but not of my own free will,
    because I wish I could stay here.  It will be an adjustment to  go to a
    company one-quarter the size of my organization (Shared Engineering
    Services), but if all goes as planned, next year at this time it will
    be larger -- which is why I'm leaving!

    It will also be an adjustment to leave the stimulation of SOAPBOX.
    (Yeah, I guess that's the right word 8^).  In the eight years I have
    contributed to this conference I have had encounters with most of you,
    and I will remember them all.  I've enjoyed meeting those of you I've
    seen at the few 'Box bashes I could attend, and I like to think I've
    made some friends with people I shall never meet face-to-face.

    Unless Digital gets sticky about it, this is my last week here.
    I'm trying to take next week as a vacation week; after that I'll be
    an employee of Lightbridge, Inc., in Waltham, Massachusetts.
    The main number there is (617) 890-2000 if you wish to contact me.
    It is on the Internet, but the company's just changed its name, so I
    have no idea what me E-mail address will be now.
    
    I'd like to offer, if I may, a word of advice.  Your reputation is
    inescapable; what you do reflects on you, even in ephemeral media like
    electronic mail and conferencing.  Keep that in mind the next time you
    have the urge to flame someone. 

    As for me, I am content to stand on my 'Box reputation. For the record,
    I've never told a deliberate lie or taken a position opposed to my
    personal belief, so what you've read of me is pretty much what I am. 
    Except...  Now that the Republican Party is on top and the national
    Democratic Party is on the ropes, I think it's time to make a switch. 
    I have done what I thought was most important to maintain a strong
    two-party system in this state, but my work there is done. That's
    right -- at the next election, I switch from Republican to Democratic!

    to conservatives in this forum is fairly close to society at large. the
    entire country is moving right. we've a lot to thank for that, chiefly
    slick. if the country had kept sliding to the left i fear another civil
    war may have occured. 
    
    one thing that's obvious. the electorate is MUCH more informed, and
    much more inclined to not "just follow" along, than ever before.
    liberals are finding that an educated populace is not necessarily
    friendly to their cause. and in the last 40 years or so how much have
    we spent on programs that did NOTHING to educate the masses? it
    staggers the mind to even think about it.

    its more than that kit. its family, history, roots. no one should ever
    give up their dreams. ever. if you do you have succumbed to acceptable
    vs desired lifestyle. i have this theory about happiness and living. i'm
    gonna digress for those that want to next unseen

      1. you must live where you want to live.

    item one is simple. i would be miserable in NYC. just as a person from

    desirable thinking they can't change. they are wrong. if you want to make
    the sacrifices you can change your work. three,  you have the least
    control over. but you can control it to some extent. this is still the
    greatest country on the planet and its still possible to find people of
    similar persuasions and beliefs and still live in peace.
    
    i had a period in my life when none of the 3 were positive. SE asia,
    many years ago. i've also had a period when all 3 were positive -
    college (thrid time around) in rapid city, sd. if you can get 2 of the
    3 positive you should be relatively happy. unfortunately, most people
    can't. as for me, i've had to leave dec to get back to at least 2 being
    positive.
    
    life is a series of compromises. being a mostly free country yet, you
    can influence them.

    Congratulations and best of luck, Gene.  I remember the first time
    I saw one of your notes... it was prior to your SOAPBOX debut, though;
    it was in DIGITAL, and you were all psyched up about a big new project
    that was going to start up, and you were describing how great it
    was going to be, and how you were calling out to everyone who was
    capable and interested in getting involved in this great project
    that would be fun and would be great for the company as well.
    
    I remember thinking "Now there's someone with the right attitude!"
    Just about everything you've written in the intervening years has
    left me with the same impression.
    
    If you ever need any extra income, you can expand your original
    "Have you ever..." from the previous box into a book.  That was
    one of the best topics I've seen around here in the last few years.
    Everything from the mundane to the awesomely profound, just like
    real life.

	Great company, growing like crazy (40%/year) bonuses, the lot.

    student.  she was told to take a catheter out of this old man.  the
    tube stays in by inflating a small balloon once inside.  she forgot to
    deflate the balloon and tugged with a good deal of force.  the old man

    shortly after that she had to treat an AIDS patient with anal warts -
    that did it for her.  goodbye bedpans!  she finished a degree and went

    I'm outta here, gone, moving on and all that jazz.  Actually, I left
    about a week a ago.  I received a call the last Friday of 1994 from 
    Union hall (Local 103, I.B.E.W) saying that I had a job and I started work 
    January 3,1995.  So I spent my last day packing and I didn't get a chance 
    to say goodbye.
    
    I had a blast in Soapboxland and I also received a education.  I learned
    alot people good and bad, but most of all I learned alot about myself. 
    I discovered that I had some things hidden in my heart, things that I
    didn't know where there.  At least now I can say that I'm in a better 
    position to deal with the issues of my heart.
    
    I would like to thank those of you who challenged my way of thinking and 
    those of you who exposed me to a different way of seeing things.  It's 
    been a growing experience, one that i'll remember for a long time.

    Nearly 9 years here, all of it in the 'box. But I stayed too long at

    I've enjoyed the vitality of Soapbox. I think the kind of "virtual
    community" created by this form of technology can be fun and
    enlightening.  
    
    But I can never land completely on one side, so I must also say that I
    find this kind of virtual community a bit ominous to the extent that it
    replaces real community, community with the real human interaction, the
    need for compromise, the dirty day-to-day work of living *in* life, and
    instead encourages our tendency to flit across the surface, dropping a
    few bombs or bon mots and then surfing off in search of the next rush.
    
    That said, I'll miss you all, and wish you good luck.

    	Eleven years have gone by, but it seems like twelve.  Anyway, it's
    been my pleasure over the last few years to work with Glenn, Deirdre,

    Mother DEC.  I submitted my resignation this week; March 17th will
    be my last day.
    
    Now all I hafta do is figure out how folks function out thar in the

    	FAB6 will make the next generations of high MHz Alpha chips. If we
    build out the undeveloped part of 6.3 (fab6 6.1 and 6.2 sections are
    built up...6.3 is for expansion), we can ramp up to 6000 wafers starts
    per week (supposedly).
    
    	Current Alpha we're working on will run at 330MHz....the newer
    stuff that were just getting into will run at 500+MHz...!

    	A full 50% of the fab6 building is empty.  Right now 6.1s, 6.1n and
    6.2n are fitted out and attempting to operate while 6.2s and 6.3 n&s
    are still empty.  According to the prints, plans and wish lists that the
    general population was privileged to see the maximum wafer start for
    the entire building once all the space is fitted out and the different 
    tools are up and running is 4300 to 4500.

Well folks, the time has come.  This has been the 5,349th, and last,
day of my career at Digital.  There've been some exceptionally good times
here, and, most importantly, I've had the chance to meet and become
friends with some fine people.  

The 'box has been a great time.  Who knew there were so many witty, bright, 
outspoken people hiding at Mother DEC?  I'll miss you folks; you've made
my otherwise so-so days lively.

I'll stay in touch; please do the same.  (My Compuserve address will
be forthcoming in a separate message.)  If I can dovetail my schedule
with my son's birthday party commitments, I'll meet up with some of you
in Sudbury next weekend.  (I can't miss seeing Mz_Deb, now that I've heard
how flattering her costume is!)  'tine, I'll start sorting thru my
embroidery kits and decide what to bring on the 15th.  And I'll keep a
day in May open for that Wannemacher chap.

Glen, I'll try to keep bringing you the Good Humors.  Glenn, watch out for
Shareena -- I think she's trouble.  &y, keep me posted on the path to
intergalactic success.  Mr. Delbalso, I'll be sending you a sports almanac
