    Went to Kaiser today, seems the doctors messed up on my surgery. 
    Things aren't healed YET - the hysterectomy done on May 27th.
    They may even have done some damage to my bladder/kidney.  I have to
    have an IVP done. :-(  Thats where they put dye in you.

    i had that ivp stuff done in sept.  if you remember, i was kind of
    off the wall about it at the time, being a major wimp.  while it 
    is not something i'd want to do again, simply for the stress of
    anticipation (they do use a needle, afterall!), i can honestly
    say the injection did not hurt and i had no illness/effects from
    the injection.  i also hope there is nothing to be found.  good 
    luck.

    This funk that I'm in.  Damn BP medication.....

My brothers new Jimmy was broken into last night - we're pretty sure they 
were trying to steal it but ran into problems.  Only managed to break one of 
the back windows and it's impossible to reach the door locks from there. 
Kind of strange since there were 4 cars in the driveway and his car was at 
the front (although there was space between the 2 cars at the back to get 
through)  None of the other cars were touched and nothing else was damaged 
on his.  Kind of glad my car is still in the body shop - I think they would 
have had an easier time with it and would have been tempted to go for "the 
next best thing".  My two dogs kind of disappointed me - I sleep at the 
front of the house and have both dogs in my bedroom - neither one of these 
big brutes made a fuss at all, and they usually bark at any slight noise.

    republicans, etc- can't anyone have a discussion without foaming?

    I'm hesitant to bring this up for fear of sounding like a loon,
    but here goes:  I've had a few conversations with several people
    recently that ran along the lines of "Have you noticed that almost
    everyone seems to be on the edge of 'snapping' lately?"  This topic
    has come up with people as diverse as friends, co-workers, relatives,
    police officers, and so on.  It almost seems to be a "phenomenon"
    of some kind.
    
    Is there something in the air (either literally or figuratively)?

   I'm calling on a customer in my old stomping grounds (Used to work
   for them actually).  So I call my brother yesterday around 4PM and
   say, "The Showcase theatres are showing 'sneak previews' of
   Generations tonight.  Wanna go?"  He says sure.
   
   Show time is 7:15PM.  We get there at 6:15PM to avoid really long
   lines.  We get there and there are only 3 people in front of us.
   
   We go to the theatrette and sit down.  Only couple dozen people
   there.  By 7:00PM the theatre was only half full.  Turns out that we
   could have arrived at 7:10 and got in the theatre by 7:15 with no
   problem.  Theatre was less than 2/3 full at show time.
   
   Leave the theatre disappointed.  Movie was just OK.  Not super.  Some
   great lines.  Great cinematography.  But just OK.  Bummed out by many
   inconsistancies with TNG TV plots.
   
   Brother drives us to his house.  I get in my car and drive to my
   in-laws (whom I'm staying with this week).  By the time I get there
   (less than two miles) the temp gauge is hitting red, steam is pouring
   from the hood, and the car has jettisoned all its coolant on US 27.  
   
   Firestone has just informed me that they haven't started on the car
   yet.  I have a party I'm throwing for my church scheduled for
   tomorrow.  I'm 100 miles away, and I don't have a DECwreck to get me
   home.  I've informed my wife to be prepared to come get me.  She's
   not a happy camper.
   
   Such is life in the big city...

    The Reading F.C injury and suspension list is as long as my arm. 
    
    A difficult game away to Southend tomorrow. I just can`t see how we
    can get a result.
    
    This sort of thing really does give me a lot of stress,I must say.

    Lyons and Medved (the scab replacements for Siskel and Ebert on PBS)
    agreed that "Star Trek: Generations" was the worst film of the series,
    worse even than Star Trek V: The Shatner Embarassment."

  A flu bug I had a couple weeks ago seem to be coming back..gots a fever and
  kinda achey all over :-/

    TTHLastFriday: My boss quit. :(  Go out for a two hour lunch, come
    back to find fire apparatus, cruisers, and electric company vehicles
    all over the place and LKG in darkness.  Seems there was an explosion
    which caused a fire in a man hole.  They send us home, we all go to 
    Scupper Jacks for a group project building meeting (hehehe), and find
    out the power comes back on.  Go back to work, but no systems.  They

Sorry to hear that, Rich. What's the extent of the injuries?

Max got hit about 3 or 4 years ago and I thought it was nothing short of
a miracle that she recovered, but she did. Hope Petey does well.

        Having my dog, a 1.5 year old Brittany, hit by a pickup.  On the same
    road and less than one mile from where I was hit so I should have 
    known better.  He survived though, but will take a lot of surgery (as I
    did) and will not be the same I imagine.  I have not really had a dog
    since mine died while I was in SE Asia and I was/am finding that this
    dog (Petey) is such a good match that I am really upset at myself for
    letting (causing) this happen. Fortunately I have a good friend who is a
    vet and he is taking care of Petey now.

        Petey has a big gash next to his fore leg but my friend says he will be
    fine after some reconstructive surgery, which will be done today.  They
    are tough dogs, according to my friend, and Petey sure is. And fast
    too.  Was too fast.  I just hope this doesn't slow him down to much.

    Most of the reviews I've seen/read/heard have trashed the movie.
    As a Trek fan (though admittedly mostly "old" Trek), I find this
    heartening, because my experience has been that the more a Trek
    film is aimed at the "Trek" audience (rather than the "general
    audience"), the less the critics like it, and the more I like it
    (and vice versa).  I don't gaf whether the likes of Dixie Whatley
    and Joyce Kulhawik like it, let 'em go back to the cultchah playhouse
    or ballet.
    
    For example, my least favorite Trek film is "ST 4 - The Voyage Hoho",
    which is typically the general public's favorite.  I know this puts
    me squarely in the minority, though...

    Chris, I think perusal of the STAR_TREK conference (and my family's
    playlist) reveals that ST:TVH is the Trekker's favorite.  What is
    yours?
    
    Anyway, the reviewers I saw both said IV was their favorite, but VII is
    the worst.  Uh-oh...

    For me, ST V is the worst. Row row row your boat. Sheesh. What a crappy
    movie.

    My friend, Ed Guinan, 34 years of age, went home to be with the Lord at
    10:30 A.M. PST, Sunday, November 20, 1994.  He had malignant malinoma
    [cancer].
    
    His journey was a difficult one towards the end... but he lived his
    life faithful to God.  He even preached in our Wednesday evening
    service at church to a congregation of around 600.
    
    Prayers requested for the family and friends.  Rejoicing requested for

    Yep we laid off a bunch in May and another few in setember, although 3
    of them were called back when DCS management decided they really do
    need the center.  However, the cuts were done according to some
    bizzarre parameters as within a week of the first cuts we were on the
    critical business needs list, and created more attrition over the
    summer.  We are now down 6 very talented people with some pretty
    unreplacable skills in the last three weeks.  but, contractors "will
    take up the slack."

    Are you kidding?  They're doing it all over the place.  They did it to
    me!  On November 25th, 1992, Digital TSFO'd me so they could contract
    my job out to a third party.  I guess they thought they could save 
    money on benefits and payroll taxes and such.  Anyway, the third party
    hired me immediately to do my old job.  Been here two years now in that
    arrangement.  This facility has laid off a ton of people, but there are
    still basically the same number of people here.  I estimate that about
    20-30% of Digital employees in Ontario are contractors.
    
    That is a TTHT.

    Yeah, either she never saw the movie (or the seven-year TV series),
    or she's trying to "impress" us by pronouncing "Dattah" the old-fashioned,
    by-the-book, cultured, sophisticated way... which didn't impress me.
    It's probably a toss-up as to which one (or both) is the case...

    Oh, I know... I used to participate in that conference frequently
    in the "old days" (before the "Trek can do no wrong" crowd chased
    me away :-)), and I recall that ST:TVH was the fan favorite...
    that's why I said I was squarely in the minority on that one, even
    amongst Trek fans.  I felt there was too much self-conscious forced
    comedy, to the point where the characters weren't being portrayed
    faithfully to the "originals".  And while TOS episodes like "The Trouble
    with Tribbles" and "Piece of the Action" are well-done and fun, I consider
    them to be change-of-pace stuff, not what Trek is all about (i.e., I
    wouldn't want the whole series to look like this), and not on my
    favorite-episode list.
    
    My favorite Trek film is "The Wrath of Khan", and over the years,
    over many re-viewings of all the films, it's actually "pulling ahead"
    of the others on my list.  I'd put "Generations" in there pretty
    solidly at third place on my "list" (after STVI-TUC).

    I'm not surprised... "Generations" is actually one of the most
    "in-crowd" Trek films (perhaps *the* most).  If you're not into
    Trek at all, there's a very good chance that you won't like this
    film, or even understand it.  And there's nothing wrong with that.
    Other "genres" make films for their fans without watering them down
    for the masses... why shouldn't Trek?
    
    It's interesting that "Generations" is usually being compared to
    previous Trek movies rather than being compared to TNG episodes.
    Even though I liked the film, it seems to be a fairly atypical TNG
    "episode", at least among the ones I've seen.  Fans of the TNG series
    might be somewhat disappointed and/or dismayed...

first snowfall today (latest in 114 years) is depressing me... and the fact 
that I'm still at work at 7:20pm and have more to do before I leave. Thought 
I'd sneak into the box for a few minutes to try and put myself in a better 
mood... it's not working... :*(

The 1.5" of snow yesterday hasn't disappeared.

It got down to 17� last night before 7PM and didn't change much until after
8AM today. Only 24� now.

    I can't understand why it takes about 5 hours to cook Thanksgiving
    dinner and then about 5 minutes into eating I just don't want any more.
                                           
    And I burned my fingers on the stove 8^(.

Bummer, Mz. Deb. But, this AM, after firing up the charcoal in the smoker,
I put the water pan in above it, came in the house to get the wood chips,
walked back out (within 2 minutes) and figured, "Ah, what the hell, that
water pan isn't hot yet, I'll just lift it out and spread the wood chips
on top of the coals instead of using the little access door on the side of
the smoker."

At which point I reached into the smoker, grabbed the edges of the water
pan with both hands, picked it up, burned at least three finger tips on
each hand and proceeded to spill most of the water in the pan as I dropped
it on the ground. What didn't quench the coals in the smoker landed on the
concrete and turned to glare ice in about three minutes.

Most accidents happen within .5 mile of home.

 Customer is up and running, but not happy..needs more hardware..looks 
 like I'll be doing an allnighter...



 (love this stuff though :-)

    Boy, I wish Digital, otherwise known as the great defenders of DCE,
    would actually *use* DCE. I've been struggling with a very simple RPC
    that works fine standalone, but not when I integrate it into an
    existing client/server application. Customers coming next week who want
    to see it in action. So I sit here on what would otherwise have been a
    holiday trying to make a piece of software that we shouldn't be using
    in the first place run...
    
    And another thing... maybe I'm being bitchy and taking this too
    personal, but I'm _really_ cheezed off about something that happened
    the other day...
    
    From 1987-1990, I was the project leader and server architect for
    several major releases of the "Pathworks" product... so, maybe I'm
    too close to this, but... the other day, some $!!@#$!@#$ in my group,
    who is a Digital employee, said, in front of customers... "don't use
    Pathworks, it sucks!" I couldn't believe it. I was furious. I'm just
    a contractor around here and I suppose if his boss (who was also in
    the room) didn't call him on it, I should keep my mouth shut. But in
    the Digital I remember so fondly, what he did was one of the few
    things you could do which would actually *guarantee* you got canned.
    
    By the way, what does the supreme yoyo-head who made this statement
    think the proper choice for PC integration is? Novell Netware of
    course. Of course, I did remind him that Pathworks now supports
    Novell integration... it's amazing to me how one group in Digital
    can be so ignorant of other group's products.

    What it boils down to is this: the prisoners did what the justice
    system failed to do. Guilt was not an issue... appeals were not
    an issue. The chair should have been fired up and ready to go
    shortly after sentencing.

WI? If not, then was it the system that caused this, or the voters? If people
want the death penalty, they can do something about trying to get it. If the
end results come down to it that they convinced the majority to get it, then it
would be in place. But I'm sure that if they did not convince the majority, you
would never even think about saying the oppisition molded their minds to make

    several polls during his trial and sentencing) felt he should receive
    the death penalty for his crimes. now most probably won't agree with
    the method. but i'll bet most still agree with the ultimate result.

I was reading about this so-called "wonder-gas" and it turns out that in 
Alaska, where it was first tested, they took it off the market in less than 
one year and replaced it with gasoline treated with ethanol.  it seems that 
this new "wonder-gas" causes chronic headaches in a significant percentage 
of the people.  The gasoline with ethanol was just as efficient and non-
polluting and didn't cause headaches.

think so. It seems the only time murder is acceptable is when a group of people
are against someone who murdered. Yet if someone stole something from you,
would you want to go steal something from them? I seriously doubt it. Yet with

    My little sister just sent me some stupid internet chain letter
    with about 10000 lines of headers in it and everyone going, wow
    this is fun, look where this has been... don't get bad luck...
    
    ... I forwarded it back to my pop who works with her.  When he gets

    Snagged a cancellation at the dentist's -- 9:00 am, which is extremely
    early Chelsea time, especially since I had to leave the house by 8:40
    to get there on time.  I hadn't been in 18 months, so the hygienist
    treated me like a lost lamb returned to the fold.  She used this very
    salty, nasty-tasting polish that sprays everywhere (but does a good job 
    on the teeth).  I've been brushing too hard, which wears out the dentin 
    near the gum line and makes the tooth sensitive, so now I have to pay 
    attention when I'm brushing.  Plus I should use the fluoride rinse
    again, to help protect the abraded teeth.
    
    But now I don't have to go back for another six months.

    Depends on your tolerance for pain.  When tartar builds up, it can
    irritate the gums, leading to the first stages of periodontal disease. 
    The scraping process can get really painful, then.
    
    I didn't visit a dentist all through college, not until a few years
    into my employment.  It took two visits to remove all the built-up
    tartar, and there was a lot of blood on my bib when they were done.

    i bought a battery-powered tooth polisher at Walmart for $12.  with it
    came that paste the dentist uses when cleaning your teeth.  it works
    really well but its too big to get in my mouth so i can work on the
    back of my teeth.  i regularly scrape and pick and polish between
    dental visits.  but then i've got the ph levels in my mouth which make
    plaque formation greater than most.  this brings new meaning to the
    term "acid tongue", eh?

I have charge cards for stores I've never even shopped in. There's

$x000 worth of purchases.

Should one feel guilty about going into a store, buying all their loss
leaders because they're bargains, and then leaving without spending
money on anything else?

Taking advantage of the most generous outcome of an offer is _not_ deception.

    I've done nearly the same thing - I seldom go shopping for clothes,
    just takes too long to get into the frame of mind.  Every couple of
    years, though, it becomes necessary.  I typically buy 12-15 pair of
    identical black socks, similar number of athletic socks, underwear, on
    such trips, and throw out all the old stuff.  You can spend close to
    $200 on that alone, never mind real shirts and slacks and all the other
    stuff you gotta have.  Three years or so ago, I was solicited for the
    store charge application on such a trip...I took the discount, felt
    absolutely no guilt - and never planned to use the card.  It arrived, I
    stuck it in my wallet... and a year ago, on another such trip, pulled
    it out.  The darn thing was too beat-up for the magnetic strip to read,
    and they spent fifteen minutes on the phone trying to verify their OWN
    IN-STORE account!  Too much trouble - I fished for VISA instead.  I
    should feel guilty when the one time I tried to use their silly card it
    failed?

    the abuse is in that what you are doing is tantamount to
    bait-and-switch.
    
    bait-and-switch is when a merchant advertises something, usually
    inferior merchandise, at a very low price and then, when customers ask
    for it, either has none in stock or badmouths it to the point where the
    customer accepts a higher-priced and higher-profit-margined article. 
    the merchant is implying something he/she does not really intend to
    carry out, and the feds have declared such tactics deceptive and
    illegal.
    
    when you apply for the card, you have no intention of doing what you
    imply when you appply for the card, i.e., using it.  even if you are
    complying with the letter of the agreement, you are lying by omission,
    and you are as guilty of bait-and-switch as a merchant would be.  it's
    deception.

    
    Of course it's abuse!! That's why they sit at every exit and
    practically beg you to abuse them!

    they send to the house that states "Do not scratch until time of

    If you use that card one time, most likely it'll pay for their
    processing fee.  The number of folks who use versus don't use are
    really far and few between.
    
    I've done the same thing twice this year.  When I got the card, I put
    it in my jewelry box.  I went back to that store 2 months later and
    found my checkbook out of checks, "bingo I've got an account here!" 
    Pulled out my drivers license and boom made the purchases I needed.
    
    Did pay the balance in full though before 30 days was up. :-)

  Now that I think about I remember buying something in Sears one time and
 paid with Mastercard.  They gave me the opportunity to apply for a Sears
 card and receive a 10% discount on my purchase for applying.  I applied
 and got rejected (long story)..

 funny thing is, my ex called me the other day and said the account we had
 had with Sears while we were married (and in my name) was still open though
 we both thought it closed.  I called them up a couple nights ago and indeed
 it is still open and they're mailing me a new card!

    If the offer was a discount for using the card and you paid another way
    that may be deceptive. Is it deceptive to buy from a store in NH because 
    there is no sales tax even though I live in MA? Hell, they advertise it

    I've been given the discount at Sears and I actually paid for the stuff

    Just dealt with a customer who is less than satisfied with Digital
    as a whole.  S/W problems, H/W problems, and administrative issues
    as well, in some part self-inflicted.  ("hey - we're the gov't, of
    course we don't have hardware support").
    
    Touchy, because I don't want to get into a pissing match with him
    and say "yup, digital's <r.o.>'d", or "no, your wrong, digital is
    ok, _you're_ screwed up."  He was pretty p.o.'d.  Customer told me
    "I've been with VMS since 3.0 and I fear for digital." blah blah...
    
    Damn, I usually make 8 people a day moderately happy, but every now
    and then I get someone who wants to dump all over me as a
    representative of this company.
    
    Maybe he missed our new commercials on teevee.  :^|

This is still just as silly an argument today as it was yesterday.

What if the card isn't tossed, but simply never used? Still abuse? One
should avoid being an "abuser" by buying merchandise that he normally
wouldn't at prices he wouldn't normally spend? How about the loss leaders?
Is one an "abuser" not to buy "something" else when they drop by to pick
up the advertised pound of smoked salmon for $.49? How about if one actually
uses the card but always pays the balance due before a finance charge can
accrue? How about if one shops there but pays cash instead of using the
card?

All of these have the same net effect as never intending to use the card.
Are they all "abuse"? If not, then why should the intention not to use it
be any different?

I'll keep right on "abusing" businesses who make these offers, thankyou.

here is another classic reason to keep government out of our lives.
    
in 1984 MN passed a gender equity law stating that there shall be equal pay 
for equal jobs of equal seniority. MN is the only state that has such a law 
AND fines for non-compliance. the flaming witch that pushed the law through 
in '84 was a state senator from a fasionable yuppy neighborhood on st. paul's 
west side. in '88 this witch was voted out. she gambled that coming forth as 
a lesbian would help her re-election bid. it didn't. but by then some damage 
had been done and the foundation for a real disaster was in place.


between '84 and '88 this witch kept adding more and more state agencies to
the list of those subject to the equal gender rules. at first it was only
direct state employees that were subject to the law. by adding one after 
another to bills over the years this witch finally ended up getting just 
about all non-private institutions that receive any state money subject to
the law - including every school district in the state. skip forward to 
march 1994. 

this past march the flaming witch shows up again. this time as head of the
Employee Equality Commission the EEC. this is the agency tasked with - you 
guessed it - enforcing the gender equity act. she was appointed to the post 
by yet another man-hating, bra burning (literally - in 1966 i believe) 
witch - the State Comissioner of Taxation. i have met and talked with the 
commissioner of taxation a couple of times. wasn't a pretty picture either time.
but i digress.

well the witch of the EEC wasted little time. she has a very modest staff to
try and enforce this law across so MANY sprawling state funded agencies 
including 1,640 local government units. so in april of this year she 
dedicated a LARGE percentage of her staff to auditing 4 of the
states school districts. and guess what? sure enough 3 of them were not
compliant with the law for certain periods since 1990. the worst was not
compliant for 11 months of the last 4 years, tho is compliant now and has
been this entire school year. the fine? $3.2 million. the crime? being 6%
out of quota for those eleven months. it seems that for 11 months during the
past 4 years, using EEO's formula, the school district was paying one sex of
teachers 6% more than the other. they aren't saying if it was men or women who
got more citing its irrelevance.

the school board for that district is appealing saying they fought like hell
in the Nov election to get a bond measure passed to reduce the number of 
students per classroom. that measure is to raise about $4 million next year.
the appeal isn't likely to work since the state attorney general is the son
of the late HHH. he also supported the initial bill in '84. if it got out of
hand since then he sure isn't going to admit it.

this whole thing stinks and the school district is trying to get the governor 
involved. think about a couple of things. why did she "pick on" those 
particular school districts? i did some research and have my theories. 

 1. ALL four school districts audited passed revenue raising measures this past
    election.

 2. NONE of the four districts are from the decaying inner city ones that
    really don't have any money.

 3. NONE of the four districts are from the wealthy suburbs of SW minneapolis 
    or st. paul's eastside - where the political powerbrokers of this state
    all live.

 4. ALL four districts are predominately blue collar working class 
    neighborhoods.

that's my theory why they got picked on. the EEC witch is now campaigning
to EXPAND her organization using the money obtained from "those in direct
violation of the law". her plea is that if she had more staff she could
notify (nice PC word) school districts of their violations much sooner thus
cutting down on interest and late fees which made this fine particularly
steep. the hardest hit school district is thinking of suing the state but
fears legal fees could double their loses. 

this is the kind of crap we said no to on 11/8 all over the country. if you
don't KEEP saying NO they'll jam it down your throat. vote. and vote NO to
    more government.

    no i can't. i have the same questions. my only additional insight i
    have is the two people responsible for the program are real power
    hungry political animals within state government. i've work personnal
    with both during some network consulting. their gender and sexual
    preferences aside (i don't much care about that) they are not good
    people and will trampled over anyone to advance their agendas and

    This was a technique I learned while participating in a meditation
    group... you know... those nasty satan worshipper types... :-)
    
    Anyway, have the person use the tip of the index finger of both hands
    to gently circle your eyes, then your temples then your foreheads. The
    tips of their fingers should barely touch your skin. Keep repeating the
    circles... after a while, have the person draw their fingers away from
    your face in the area where the headache is worst... this is a symbolic
    act of drawing the pain away from you.
    
    I've worked at this for years. I guarantee you I can cure any normal
    headache, including migrains. If someone whacked you over the head with
    a bat, I probably couldn't do much, but your run-of-the-mill headache
    is no match for this technique...

    saw that said, in interviewing 1,000 +, the tee vee show that most

Whilst stacking the firewood today, discovering that that damn wet, heavy crap
that fell last Sunday night had totally penetrated the pile of wood that needed
to be handled/stacked. Every damn piece had ice and snow on it which didn't
melt this past week.

Went through five pairs of leather work gloves that got soaked clear through
before finishing the task.

    Maybe I should start another social suicide topic for this one... this
    is funny...
    
    For the past 2.5 weeks, I've been working on a software spec for a
    consulting client who is trying to decide whether they want me to
    write a fairly hefty piece of software for them... well, you know
    how big a Monty Python fan I am, so everywhere there's an example
    "user" in my spec, I used the username "ericthefish".
    
    I printed out the spec and mailed it off to the client yesterday
    morning. Then I sent e-mail to the manager who I've been working
    with. Well...
    
    The manager responded to my e-mail this afternoon and let me know
    that it would be reviewed by his lead engineer as soon as possible.
    He mentioned his lead engineer's name in the mail message too...
    first time he's ever mentioned it to me... and the name is...
    Eric, of course. I sure hope Eric has a sense of humor.
    
    Either way, I'd say I've learned a valuable lesson... :-(

'Cuz, as I mentioned, the firewood pile was all full of that wet heavy snow

    i have a wife and two daughters.
    it is winter time.
    i prefer to sleep indoors.

    I got a part Golden - part German Shep... Ate everything in sight
    (organic and inorganic). She grew out of it (close call though).
    My wife called the vet one day and asked how much to have an animal
    destroyed. The vet asked what was wrong with the animal. She said
    nothing... The vet told her they don't put down healthy  animals.
    
    She never went back there. We still have Kela. She is mantal, but non-

Well, my cats manage to step on the remote control and
watch TV about once a month.  Trouble is, they haven't
got much dexterity in their paws, so they always key

All they get is CNN.  God only knows what info they're
picking up.

Oh, well. Another piece of history lost forever.

Cable companies.

I'm on the Acton Cable Committee, and was given the task of investigating
a complaint from the first resident of a new subdivision in town that the
cable company told her back at the beginning of October that they would
not provide service to her house until May-July of next year.

The cable is already in place from the main road (where service already
exists) throughout the subdivision and up to her house.  All the cable
company has to do is install knuckles, amplifiers, and splitters as needed
at each point along the road through the subdivision.

The license we executed with the cable company twelve years ago requires
them to provide service to all new homes within a reasonable time after
electric and phone service are installed, and not later than four (4) months
after the first resident requests service.

But Cablevision says they don't have the money in their budget, and can't
do it until after the spring thaw.  But the cable is already buried!  In
fact, they did that themselves months ago!

I would expect them to be out there right now, in this beautiful weather,
rather than having to do it next January or February after the selectmen
get a court order enforcing the terms of the license.  I suspect they are
counting on the selectmen ignoring the issue.

the action they should take?

I'm a firm believer that franchisees who hold a monopoly should always
be accountable to the letter of the contract, especially regarding
timeliness.

We'll soon find out.

The original cable committee voted to resign about eight years ago
(I was one of the few dissenting votes) because the selectmen were
not willing to pursue the non-compliance issues back then.

There has been a significant turnover in the makeup of the board,
and the cable committee was reactivated; I was the one volunteer
selected as a link to the past.

This will be a chance to see if the selectment really want to pursue
compliance issues, or whether they just appointed us as free help to
rubber-stamp the license renewal process.  (The license is up for
renewal in 1998.)

The town is powerless to grant a monopoly franchise.  The town must
grant a license to any and all companies which come to the town saying
"We want to provide wired cable television service in your town" after
determining that they comply with the requirements of the state cable
television law.

Current technology and financial reality give the first such company
an effective monopoly.  This will change as soon as the telephone
company begins to offer video dial tone.  The cable company already
has competition (increasing competition, in fact) from satellite and
other non-wired video service vendors, where the technology is quickly
making that an increasing form of competition.

In Massachusetts, the town or city has no choice but to grant a license
to any and all qualified applicants.  State law very explicitly spells
out what the parameters of "qualified" are.

When multiple applicants apply simultaneously, the town has the option
to choose the one they consider the best.  Any rejected applicants may
reapply at the end of the application period, and if they are the sole
applicant in a new application period, and are qualified, they must
also be granted a license.

The license must state that it is a non-exclusive license.

I come up to a spot where the road takes a sharp left. Around the corner,
backwards, comes some bozo. I pull to a stop about 50 ft. behind him, while I
attempt to decide what he's doing. At this point bozo stops, starts pounding
the dash, the window, the seat, waving his arms around frantically. I gave up
and passed by him on the left...

At the I190/290 interchange, the ramp to from 190S to 290E branches off two
lanes to the LEFT. So there I was minding my business, when this 70s land
barge pulls up behind me and starts the light flashing routine. Less than 5
sec. later I pulled off onto the ramp, bozo zooms straight ahead, we exchange
looks, he flips me a bird! Apparently the thought that I didn't pull over to
let him pass was just too much for him...

Not 1 minute later, I get alongside one of those trucks that delivers very
large tires... BOOM! FLASH! Wow, what a backfire...

    went to HMO doctor yesterday...had my 10th ear infection in last 12 months 
    ...puts me on antibiotic for 10 time...once off antibiotic, ear infection
    returns in as fast as 13 days...asked for referral to ENT and get a
    hearing test since it IS affecting my hearing and they refused...logged
    a complaint with Member Services...meanwhile I'm taking my 10
    antibiotic in 12 months...this ain't no fun!

A number of years ago I had a class-10 ear infection that would not go away --
antibiotics, cortisone drops, the whole works, and they weren't doing jack ****.
I had a couple of granola-cruncher friends that offered a holistic cure that
consisted of a poultice of wet activated charcoal and flour (the flour only to
suspend the activated charcoal in a manageable paste) that you strapped over
your ear for a night.  Knowing full well that such stupidity would do nothing
since the poultice was nowhere near the infection I did it anyway to humor them.

Next morning I had a very stinky poultice and no, none, zippo indication that I
had had *any* infection -- no pain or discomfort.  The next night I did it again
and unlike the previous night the poultice had no smell and of course there was
no change -- a healthy feeling ear can't get much better.

I had checkup with he doctor a day or two later and he was amazed at how good
the ear looked -- he couldn't figure out how the infection could have possibly
cleared up that quickly.

Though I hardly considered it a scientific test, I do consider that through
whatever mechanism, there's a very high probability that poultice was the thing
that cleared up the infection; as a result I've opened my mind a little (not
much mind you) to holistic medicine, though I've hardly bought into the entire
granola-cruncher mindset. :-)

Bottom line, if I were you, even if you're a skeptic like me, you might want to
give this approach a try if you've got some holistic smoke-and-mirror friends or
know how to contact some holistic types...  It may clear things up to the point
that it doesn't come back -- with nothing to loose and everything to gain, who
knows?  It may be worth a try.

    They were jogging in the outward direction.  A car, also heading out,
    had to go wide to avoid them.  That put the car in my lane, the inbound
    lane, the lane opposite the joggers.  No big deal on a straight piece
    of road, but that curve really cuts down room for reaction.

	I can sympathise Chels. I'm a runner, but there are some idjits out
there. I was in a 5.5mile race once with the 2nd female runner out in front of
me. She was running ON THE DOUBLE LINE IN THE CENTER OF THE ROAD. You want to
talk about some PO'd motorists! Yeowza. I thought one of 'em was going to run
her over...probably should've. Dang'd idjit....

     car.  because or its size, there is no place that it fits, so i sit it
     near the shift and keep an eye on it.  came to a stop sign.  there was
     a school bus wanting to turn down the street i was on, but couldn't
     cuz i was in the way...so i had to move fast...and i did...but i
     didn't grab onto my mug fast enough...it went flying...spilling onto
     the passenger seat...tried to pick it up, but i was too worried about 
     driving into the house on the corner or the truck behind the bus...and
     the cover had fallen off at this point...the entire thing of coffee is 
     now all over my passenger seat, the door panel and the floor.  at
     least it wasn't my lap...

 Driving south on 93 from Manchester NH, Saturday night..had taken my son
 and a friend to the mall.  We happen upon an accident that had happened just
 a few minutes before we got there..emergency crews not yet there..I stop to
 see if I could help, but there were plenty of folks there.  A car had gone off
 highway and hit a tree..I find out this morning that 2 people were killed :-(

Saturday night whilst fiddling with the new PC, it hung up in the middle
of an application. Rebooting caused windows to come up with a warning
box about a General Protection violation by the program manager at some
address. Closing the box returned to DOS, frequently with another error
message indicating that the machine had been halted on purpose to prevent
the risk of data corruption. Net result, system dead in the WaterforWindows.

Attempted reaching Packard-Bell software support all day Sunday with automatic
redial phone. busy-busy-busy-busy-busy-.....

System still dead today. Packard-Bell Customer Service apologizes but can
only promise to relay a message to have them get back to me within -

96 hours.

I'd simply start from scratch and reinstall everything from the bottom
up, only they failed to ship me a restore disk by which to do so.

    Try recreating your swap file... go into the control panel and kill any
    current swap file... if you have a permanent swap file, change it to a
    temporary one. Bring up Windows. The problem might go away. (I've had
    similar happen)
    
    BTW: I'll assume we're talking Windows V3.1. If not, there were all kinds
    of hairy bugs in previous versions...
    
    If the swap file thing doesn't cure it, then I'll walk you through
    checking out the group files, and/or WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI... but
    first let's see if the swap file fixes you up.

Can't get to the Control Panel. When Windows comes up, Program Manager
causes the General Protection Violation prompting the box with the
error message and the close button, which shuttles me back to DOS and
the other error message from something called EMM386.

I did reach a hardware guy yesterday who helped me look at some stuff
via DOS. His conclusion was that hardware was AOK, something got
hosed on disk affecting Program Manager, and, since he wasn't a
software type, I'd need to talk to them for more assistance.

This is Windows for WorkGroups V3.11 running on top of DOS 6.2.

Now that you mention the swap file thingee, though, that might make sense
if it got hosed when I shut the system down when it was hung.

Is there a way I can delete it from DOS (ie. what's the path\file?) I would
assume that if I delete it and try to start windows, it will create a brand
new one if it can't find the old one. Am I close?

    OK! EMM386 is hosing your system. The reason is most likely a memory
    conflict. You will need to comment the place it gets loaded in
    CONFIG.SYS.

        Try booting Windows  in  standard  mode  with  WIN/S at the DOS

Start up the machine, catch it in DOS before it starts Windows, and

it comes up OK, delete one of those mentioned files? In what directory?

    First things first. Comment out the EMM386 line in CONFIG.SYS and
    reboot. Bring up Windows. If that fails, as &y suggested, bring
    Windows up in standard mode (win/s). The only problem is, I don't
    think you can tweak the virtual memory parameters (the swap file)
    in standard mode... but it will at least give you a hint as to
    where the problem is.
    
    The chance of the Windows DLL and EXE files getting corrupt is
    pretty small. At least, that isn't where I'd _start_ looking.

        Jack, you  can't tweak the Windows parameters in standard mode,
        since by definition,  the  386 enh is not available to you.  By
        booting Windows in standard  mode, you're testing the system to
        isolate the "enh" end of  things.    If  the  pc  comes  up  in
        standard  mode,  _then_ you look at  the  swap  file  and  it's
        pointer file (SPART.PAR and 386SPART.PAR).

        They're both hidden files so you'll need to find them - easiest
        to use file mgr and check the show system files box.  SPART.PAR
        is  usually  in  the  Windows  subdir and 386SPART.PAR will  be
        wherever you told the system to build virtual memory.

	You wouldn't believe this, but I have had the dilemma last week.  I 
can't seem to find the key that opens the chassis.  I want to put in a 
faster modem and more memory.  The key is nowhere in site.  Tore the house
down.  Did manage to find the 800 and the non-toll free numbers.  Both 
rang busy for ever.  Everyone bitches about Digital's Support, which I am 
a member of.  I can't imagine a company that doesn't even have the decency
to have a damn real telephone system.   I have a PB Legend and can't imagine 
what I will do if something seriously breaks.

      Believe or not, the lock on my system and a friend of mine's Packard-
Bell defaults to the unlocked position.  So with a bit of pulling and 
prying you can get the damn cover off.  I don't even remember seeing a key
for it anyway.  It's really unfortunate that I had to buy a PC in the first
place.  Most of the people I work for have them at home free of charge.  I 
paid $3K for all of my stuff.  A friend of mine works for Ross Systems.  He
got $200.00/month for a year for the purchase of a notebook.  If he stays 
for the year the notebook is his.  Like to see an incentive like that in 
this corp.

    suppose I shouldn't expect it 8^).

The proper driving practice is "keep right except to pass".

Traffic merging from on-ramps is expected to adjust its speed to be
able to merge between cars or to stop and wait until it is safe to
enter.

Merging traffic should not expect traffic in the right lane to get
out of its way.

Consideration for merging traffic does not include lane-changing.  It
includes such things as maintaining constant speed (insofar as safety
