| Live After Death of course. If you've seen them in concert,
just listen to it, clothes your eyes and you're there.
Feel the bass pound through your flesh, and the squealing of
the guitars slide across your skin, and the ringing of madness
rattling through you're head.
Yeah, Iron Maiden.................

About D'ianno, if you listen to the Maiden Japan EP you'll see
how croaky his vioce got towards the end of his Iron Maiden career.
This was brought on entirely by self through too much booze and
smoking. Harry just got so pissed off with him that he booted him
out. Bruce had already been hired before D'ianno's D-day.
Sanctuary, Phantom, Murders in the Rue Morgue, 22, Where Eagles
Dare, Aces High, Stranger, The Prophecy rate as among the best Iron
Maiden stuff, all albums are great.
So it shall be written,

How is it? I haven't bothered to buy it yet. I
was a big time IM fan until Somewhere in Time. I
bought it the day it came out, and was VERY
disappointed (it was stolen a week later). Is
the newest one similar, or does it sound like
older Maiden? Would you rank it up there with,
say, Piece of Mind (which is a great album) or
along with Powerslave (which was a pretty good
album), better or worse?

Is there any truth to the rumor raised in another reply about
this being Maiden's last tour ? I think they have a LOT of good
years left in them.
I also heard too that Dokken was hanging it up after Monsters
because Georgie and Donnie can't play together nicely anymore, that's
why the double live LP would be released, no more new stuff. Enquiring

That's not really his style, and anyone else playing bass than Harris
just wouldn't be "Maiden" ya know ? I think Maiden would go through
the same changes Van Halen did when what's his name split. We'd
be talkin' "Old Maiden or New Maiden", they'd be a new band with
an old name.

| This was the best concert of the year so far.
Unbelievable-Awesome-Any great adjective you can think of.
Since I work at the Centrum I have any seat in the house at any
given time. I took center stage 4 rows back and had the best seat.
At 7:25 Frehley's Comet began there horrible set. By 8:15 they were
on there bus and headed out of town.
At 8:45 Maiden touched down on the stage. The stage was made up
to resemble the album cover. The artwork was great.
They opened with Moonchild-and ended one hour and 45 min later with
Running Free- In between they had 13 songs-
Evil That Men Do
Infinite Dreams- The best song of the nite
Can I Play With Madness
Heaven Can Wait
The Clairvoyant
The Number of the Beast
Wasted Years
Iron Maiden
Run to the Hills
2 Min to Midnite
The Trooper* I think
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
And One more I can't remember
The props were very well done with various ingenuity
They had a twenty foot Eddie with mechanical movements that blew
the crowd away- everything moved
The only down faults were :
No 8 foot high walking Eddie
And No lasers- I talked with a roadie earlier in the day and he
mentioned that it was broke-
For sound and clarity a numero uno- everything was state of the art
computer controlled sound.
I highly recommend anyone to see this show tomorrow nite in Providence-
I know for a fact they will have a few changes in schedule.
The original show consisted of 18 songs but because of time limits
at the Centrum and only 6,000 tix sold they only performed 15 songs.
And a few props were not used including a baby Eddie fetus which
I saw before Maiden took the stage.
As I mentioned before - this show is the surprising show of '88

For all you Iron Maiden fans out there, I just read
an interview in The Houston Post which states that
they will be taking a two-year hyatus after they
finish the 'Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son' tour.
"We're going to take a couple of years
off between albums, so we'll have a lot
of time to spend with our families and
enjoy a normal way of life," said Dave
Murray. "Staying in hotels every day
can wear a bit thin, but it does go
along with the job."
If anyone REALLY wants me to, I can enter the
rest of the interview later this evening... but it's
mostly about how tough life on the road is, and
doesn't give any insights into the future projects
the band will be working on.

for the first time in a small club in Aberdeen, Scotland. Before

biggest kick ass band in the U.K.
I have since saw Maiden support Judas Priest on the British Steel

much time and its been a long time since I seen it.
The video consists of live cuts, promo videos and interviews with
the band and people who work with the band eg Derek Riggs.
It tells the story of the band from when they started in 1977 up
until the 'Somewhere in Time' era.
There's a live clip from a club gig in 1980 where the quality of
the picture and sound are the same as the metallica video.
There's also a clip of the band jamming at a wedding in Poland when
they were on the Piece of Mind tour.
Brilliant video for any Maiden fan who wants to know the real history
of the band.

*** IRON MAIDEN ***
12TH DECEMBER
HAMMERSMITH ODEON
Now this wasn't the best concert I've ever been to, Slayer/Nuclear
Assault gets that honour, but it definately rates as being the most fun.
As Brynn has already reviewed Killer Dwarfes I'll only say that I also enjoyed
their set tremendously, one of the best front-man I've ever seen.
On to the bizness of Maiden, acclaimed by J.K. (Jonathan King) as the
most popular Rock (not metal) band around. The stage show was the same as
for the rest of the tour, but slightly smaller due to the size of the Hammy O.
Still, they managed to get the largest lighting rig I've seen into the place.
Predictably enough they started out with the intro to Seventh Son and then
Moonchild. I can't tell you the full track listing bvt it included such
numbers as;
Infinite Dreams, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, Can I play with Madness,
Number of the Beast, Iron Maiden, The Clairvoyant. Surprisingly left out were
Two minutes to Midnight, The Trooper...But excellently replaced with Still
Life and Killers.
Being the last show for about 18 months there were a few surprises in
for us in the crowd. A couple of numbers into the set, a Killer Dwarf cam on
in a pair of kacks and braces. Bruce expertly tore his clothing off and said
Dwarf left the stage rather embarrassed. During the "interlude" in Seventh
Son we had Spinal Tap revisited with pixies dancing around an altar type
thing which was lowered from the lights. There weren't any pixies around so
a couple of Killer Dwarfes had to do instead. More Killer Dwarfes were
involved near the end of the performance when a pantomime horse invaded the
stage.
The encore gave us Run to the Hills, Running Free, Sanctuary and a
couple others. This is definately one of the best shows I've been to, and all
I can say is...
Up the Irons. See ya in '90/91.

They just released a new album called "State of Control." ''ve

| MAIDEN NEWS
-------------
Barely had the last notes of the last concert on the Seventh Tour faded
before a sense of sadness descended on the members of Iron Maiden.
Where in the past they had always been tired at the end of a tour the
five week break they had due to cancellation of the Far East leg of the
tour, ensured that as the UK tour drew to a close they were just
getting in the swing of things. However after a couple of weeks spent
with their families and unwinding they all came to realise that the
discision to take a long break had been the right one. Adrian had
already advantage of the earlier break to marry his fiancee Natalie and
so after a short rest began to start writing and rehearsing new
material for his solo project.
Nicko spent christmas at home then went abroad for a bit of winter
sunshine.
After his well earned rest Nicko settled down to some work of his own,
starting work on a drum book and golfing with the returned home Rod
Smallwood and Davey.
Steve spent christmas at home and as well as playing football three
times a week spends most of his time hunched over a control consul
editing some 120 cassettes for the new live video. Steve flew out to
Germany with Martin Birch for the mixing of the video soundtrack.
Dave and Tamar finally sold their house in Hawaii and after countless
hours of house hunting found a new home in East Anglia and are both up
to their necks in decorating (crap).
Bruce has been busy. He has set up his own video production called,
Duellist (great song!!!) Productions, you may have also read about his
worh with Wrathchild. He has also established Duellist Enterprises who
will deal with mail order fencing equipment As if that isn't enough
he's also helping to manage a band!!
As you can see all the members of Iron Maiden are enjoying their "rest"
but don't worry they'll be back in ACTION NEXT YEAR.
Here is my Iron Maiden Top 20 :-
1. Number Of The Beast
2. Run To The Hills
3. The Trooper
4. Hallowed Be Thy Name
5. Phantom Of The Opera
6. The Sheriff Of Huddersfield
7. 7th Son Of A 7th Son
8. Rime Of The Ancient Mariner
9. Iron Maiden
10. Running Free
11. Two Minutes To Midnight
12. The Prisoner
13. Can I Play With Madness
14. Wasted Years
15. Powerslave
16. The Clairvoyant
17. Stranger In A Strange Land
18. Moon Child
19. Infinite Dreams

Who's better ?
Hmm...
When Maiden play live, Adrian Smith generally sticks to the 'written'
solo's, where as Dave Murray (the one who have a face like a budgie)
tends to improvise more.
If you listen carefully to the 'Live after death' album, you can
tell who is soloing.
As for who's better, well its down to personal opinions I guess,
I like Dave Murray coz I admire people who can improvise a solo
in an established song, and still make it sound great, but I also
admire A.Smith for sticking to a formula that works, and playing
safe (if you pardon the pun).
Personal Preference methinks.

In the Latest Copy of Kerrang it is stated that when Iron Maiden
recently got back together to start recording after a short time
Adrian Smith decided that it was no longer his scene. It was
apparently under 'amicable decisions' that Adrian Smith quit the
band in order to persue the A.S.A.P. project and to begin work on
the follow up to 'Silver And Gold'. Iron Maiden are now looking
for a British Guitarist to replace him, and will carry on writing
new material.

1.) Iron Maiden (self-titled) : D'ianno vocals
Clive Burr orig. drummer
Might not have had Adrian Smith
yet, used to have Dennis Stratton
on guitar along with Dave Murray
2.) Killers : D'ianno vocals
Adrian Smith for sure on this album
3.)Maiden Japan : D'ianno vocals,
Live album.
I've seen a bunch, and own a few Maiden bootlegs from the D'ianno era
that have actually made it to vinyl.
4.)Number of the Beast : Bruce takes over on vocals
This album has your COTD
5.)Piece of Mind : Bruce on vocals,
New Drummer Nicko McBrain
Arguably the best Maiden Album.
The order may be wrong on these last albums, But the lineup has
remained the same since piece of mind:
6.)Powerslave
7.)Live after Death (live album)
8.)Somewhere in time
9.)7th son of a 7th son
I think thats it, but I haven't followed them very closey in recent
years, so forgive any mistakes Maiden fans.
There are also a number of interesting Maiden peculuralities (sp?)
out on vinyl, such as Maiden doing Jethro Tull's cross eyed Mary,

| Iron Maiden (or other HM band) have never been in Romania but .. they
were very popular like heavy metal in general which was not showed on
TV or radio. But there were tapes circulating everywhere. After
Ceausescu's fall one of the first things to appear on TV were heavy
metal bands. But in that country (also in Albania) they still cannot
find the original albums on the market (a commercial problem maybe). So
heavy metal won with the insurrection over Ceausescu.

Reprinted from the June edition of Guitar World

Former Gillan guitarist Janick Gers will replace
Adrian Smith when Iron Maiden returns to the
studio. `When Adrian left, the band had a
meeting to discuss replacements, and it was
obvious to all of us who that should be,' says
Steve Harris. `We've all known Janick for a
number of years and all of us get on great with
the guy. He's a superb guitarist, lives and
breathes heavy metal and has always been a big
fan of Maiden's music. We didn't audition anyone
else. We just asked Janick to learn a couple of
songs and come down to a rehearsal. The playing
jelled immediately. You'd think he and Davey had
been playing together for years. We'll probably
release an album toward the end of the year and
then can get back on the road.'

That may well be. But too bad the radio stations don't think they
have much of anything that's commercial. I could stand to hear
more Maiden on the radio! They get a few months of airplay after
each new album, then it drops off. I tell ya... the general public
just don't know what's good for 'em!

Sounds like standard operating procedure to me. VERY few songs get
played consistantly for months or years on end, it doesn't have
anything to do with the artist.

I just picked up an import maiden CD. Purgatory - Maiden Japan.
With the same songs as Maiden Japan plus Purgatory, Genghis khan,
(album versions) and a 7.5 minute segment featuring Nicko McBrain
talking about the band back then, (where was he?) and telling jokes.
It's part of "First Ten Years" limited edition series comprising
ten releases. The one I got was #3. I looks like theres different
songs on each one. Residents of the UK, it says, can mail in all ten
vouchers (one from each of the ten releases) and recieve a free
illustrated box to keep their CDs in. "Special limited edition"
of course!
Anybody else seen any of these around?

17.251 | Anthrax/Iron Maiden review | VCSESU::MOSHER::COOK | The Mosher | Mon Dec 17 1990 09:07 | 95 |
| From: [email protected] (B J Donnelly)
Newsgroups: alt.rock-n-roll.metal
Subject: Anthrax/Maiden
Organization: Edinburgh University Computing Service
Lines: 89
The date: Tuesday 11th December.
The time: 7.45.
The venue: A grotty big hall in the middle of nowhere, with aeroplanes
flying overhead.
The lights go down, leaving a large clock illuminated on the left of the
stage. The hands whirl round faster and faster ans faster. Then in a
burst of light Anthrax blaze onto the stage. They're wildly energetic
and completely unintelligible. The words suggested that the song was
persistence of time, but it was just a noise. The crowd don't care
though, this is Anthrax and they may not get to see them again for a
while.
By the third song however, some wizard had done some fine tuning behind
the scenes and Anthrax now sounded like the band we know and love.
In all the set lasted about an hour, they played the first four songs
from among the living:
Among the Living
Caught in A Mosh
I am the Law
Efilnikufesin (N.F.L.)
From State of Euphoria they played one song: Antisocial, perhaps an
indication that the songs on this album are somewhat weak, compared to
some of the others, especially for an hour long set.
They played several tracks from Persistence as you might expect:
Time
Keep it in the Family
Belly of the Beast
Got the Time
They also played Madhouse.
They even did an encore, they came on and played I am the Man follow by
I am the Law - seriously wicked as they say.
And that was Anthrax. Everyone then rushed off for a quick pint (the
fifteen year olds included - of which there were a startlingly large
number - the new Metalhead image - small weedy fifteen and frenetic
((and pissed on one pint of lager)) )
After some delay, while the stage was being setup, Maiden came on after
their new intro tune. Janick Gers seems to have injected new life into
the whole group. They were all running round the stage like beheaded
chickens. Bruce scaled the supports at the side of the stage on a couple
of occasions and Janick has been allowed to let all his exhibitionism
out, twirling the guitar round as he plays it, tossing it in the air,
dancing with Eddie as he plays and generally running around.
Check out Bruce's mean moves, especially when he is singing The
Assassin. Well he tries to move anyway.
In all the set lasted about an hour and a half, with two or three
encores - I was well away with it by this time so couldn't say for
definite. They play a good ole mix though, off the top of my head:
Assassin
Tailgunner
Daughter to the Slaughter ("Our new single ... released
Christmas Eve ... designed to scare the shit out of Cliff Richard in his
fucking white suit")
No Prayer for the Dying (Bruce's favourite)
Hooks in You
Old favourites:
Somewhere in Time
Heaven can Wait
Run to the Hills
Number of the Beast
Die with your Boots On
Sanctuary
And loads more ....
Even if you only like one of the bands I would strongly recommend going
as they are both exceptional. I'd say Anthrax had the edge - marginally
- but before I start a debate - this is a personal opinion. And if you
like both bands - well what are you waiting for.
Oh by the way - while I'm here - to the person that was asking how to
get good tickets - I used to go and queue for hours - and get lousy
seats. In Edinburgh to get the best seats you have to join one of the
membership schemes run by various venues and costing lots of dosh, but
another good way to get a ticket is to phone the box office the day the
tickets go on sale and order by credit card. I'm told though, that if
you want the best seats to either buy a venue or work for onr. So there
you have it.

| Here in England,Iron Maiden are currently number one with "Bring Your
Daughter To The Slaughter" with no airplay and little promotion.
I heard last night that the head of radio one hasn`t put the record on
the playlist because in his opinion, the listners wouldn`t want to hear
it.
So we have Iron Maiden having the best selling single and nobody wants
to hear it. Yeah, makes sense. Especially with such "brilliance" as
Vanilla Ice prat face about.
Also,Anthrax are high in the charts - absolutely no chance of hearing
that.

IRON MAIDEN: THE DEVIL YOU SAY
Taken without permission from the Boston Herald, January 22, 1991.
Iron Maiden has some thing of an identity problem.
You can still find the group prominently displayed on the cover of the
Jimmy Swaggart booklet that equates heavy metal rock n' roll with the
devil's work. And when things got a little out of hand at a couple of
the band's concerts, they were quickly tagged with a reputation for
inciting violence.
Having Eddie, their outsized, death mask-wearing android mascot gracing
album covers and tromping around the stage has done nothing to
alleviate those contentions.
Not that it matters much to the group - or their fans - aftern 10 years
ann nine albums. But just to set the record straight, the British
headbanging quintent - who appear tomorrow night at the Worcester
Centrum and Friday at the Providence Civic Center - find those
associations laughable.
"We've always seen ourselves as completely the opposite," says Dave
Murray, Iron Maiden's lead quitarist, referring to the morally activist
leanings in the band's lyrics.
"You can go to a soccer game and fans are much more violent than at a
Maiden show. And though we've had a few lyrics that refer to Satan,
it's all fiction, just fantasy-oriented. It's not to be taken
seriously, just like books, movies or even advertising."
You might be able to read some devil-worship references into the title
track of "Prayer for the Dying," Iron Maiden's latest album on Epic.
But heavier topics of environmental responsibility, nuclear war or the
dissolution of the Soviet bloc can also accompany the group's punky
metal.
Unlike heavy metallers who beleive speed or volume is paramount, Iron
Maiden's love affairs with melody and tempo changes have set them apart
from the crowd, even if the results were sometimes unbearably pompous
("Rime of the Ancient Mariner"). "Prayer for the Dying" is a return to
the angry energy of early Maiden, circa "Number of the Beast" (1982).
"It's refreshing, not as polished as some of the more recent stuff,"
says Murray. "Even though the musicianship is on a higher level it's
like we've come full circle."
Murray says it's been surprisingly easy to keep the group's collective
fire burning: "There's still that fight, that hunger." And the band's
chemistry has been helped by the addition of guitarist Janick Gers
(ex-Ian Gillan), who played on Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson's solo
album last year.
"The guitars are featured more - very heavy," Murray says beaming.
"And there's a general enthusiasm, a bit of magic in the band's
interaction now." Even Nicko (drummer Nicko McBrain) is running about
on stage."
The contrast of the band's concert parties against the backdrop of the
Persian Gulf war has not been lost on the Iron Maiden. Ironically, the
band's set already contained a topical showcase, "Tailgunner," a song
about an extended bombing mission.
"When we played "Tailgunner" the other night, about an hour after we
found that war had broken out, it was very strange. Especially with
the song's intro tape of airplanes buzzing around the air."
"It got all our goosebumps going, because the song really meant
something that night."
The End.
(On the next page, when the article continued, the headline read, IRON
MAIDEN HAS STEEL GOT IT).

Maiden/Anthrax at Long Beach (CA) Arena (2/22) was as described
previously. Anthrax won by 7.6 dB. What's that song they're doing
whose chorus is "Suck my Mother-F*ckin' D*ck!"? Great tune.
Maiden stopped the show briefly so that they could turn up the
lights and film the audience going "ape-shit" for a video. You'll know
where it was filmed when you see it later this year. They were
also doing a bunch of filming near the loge exits of people dressed

| The Number Of The Beast
Woe to you o' Earth and Sea
For the Devil sends the beast with wrath
Because he knows the time is short
Let him who hath understanding reckon the number of the beast
For it is a human number; it's number is six hundred and sixty-six
I left alone, my mind was blank
I needed time to think, to get the memories from my mind
What did I see? Could I believe
That what I saw that night was real and not just fantasy?
Just what I saw in my own dreams
Were they reflections of my woman staring back at me?
Cuz in my dreams, it's always there
The evil face that twists my mind and brings me to despair
YAAAAAAAAAA!
Night was black, was no use holding back
Cuz I just had to see, was someone watching me?
In the mist, dark fingers move and twist
Was all this for real, or just some kind of hell?
666-The number of the beast
Hell and fire were sworn to be released!
Torches blazed and sacred chants of rage
As they start to cry, hands held to the sky
In the night the fires are burning bright
The ritual has begun, Satan's work is done
666-The number of the beast
Sacrifice is going on tonight
(mean solo)
This can't go on, I must inform the law
Can this still be real, or just some crazy dream?
But I feel drawn towards the chanting hordes
Seem to mesmorize, can't avoid their eyes
666-The number of the beast
666-The one for you and me
I'm coming back, I will return!
And I'll posess your body and I'll make you burn!
I have the fire, I have the force!
I have the power to make my evil take it's course!
See, that was harmless wasn't it Mikey?? These are the words to the
best of my knowledge. They are not included in the jacket, so I had to
listen to it a few times to get this.
Although I'm sure if you played it backwards, you would get something
totally different...

First a correction, the music and lyrics to the song were written
by Steve Harris. Bruce didn't do any contributing to the writing
until Piece of Mind.
>>Woe to you o' Earth and Sea
>>For the Devil sends the beast with wrath
>>Because he knows the time is short
>>Let him who hath understanding reckon the number of the beast
>For it is a human number; it's number is six hundred and sixty-six
> This is very cool, but then again, it's god's word, not Bruce D's,
I agree.
The whole song is about a dream. The reference to his woman
could be a vague reference to Charlotte the Harlot (trilogy).
The evil face is in reference to the devil.
>>Night was black, was no use holding back
>>Cuz I just had to see, was someone watching me?
>>In the mist, dark fingers move and twist
>>Was all this for real, or just some kind of hell?
This is were he sees hell in his dream. Each verse progresses
through the dream. Alot of bands write like that.
>>Torches blazed and sacred chants of rage
>>As they start to cry, hands held to the sky
>>In the night the fires are burning bright
>>The ritual has begun, Satan's work is done
This is more on hell and people worshipping the devil.
>>This can't go on, I must inform the law
>>Can this still be real, or just some crazy dream?
>>But I feel drawn towards the chanting hordes
>>Seem to mesmorize, can't avoid their eyes
This is where the person having the dream is reacting to
everything he's seeing. His offeneded, but at the same time
the devil is starting to get the person in it's grip.
>>I'm coming back, I will return!
>>And I'll posess your body and I'll make you burn!
>>I have the fire, I have the force!
>>I have the power to make my evil take it's course!
This is the devil speaking to the person having the dream.
>>666-The number of the beast
>>Hell and fire were sworn to be released!
> And the chorus has NOTHING to do with the verses!!
Steve Harris was never good at writting chorus'.

To try in get this topic back on track....
There is no base for comparison. These two groups are widely
diversified, Kiss being MAJORLY commercial and Maiden being MAJORLY
talented. Now a lot of people are gonna say...Kiss is way more talented
than Maiden....Take a good listen to their albums....Harris is 100
times the bassist Simons is. Dickinson can out sing Stanley anyday,
The guitarist (name slips me right now) is no where near being as
talented as Dave Murray (or Janick Gers) and the drummer (once again slips)
is a musical ant compared to the elephant Nicko McBrain.
Chris, probably gonna cause more controversy

Just because a band is majorly commercial does'nt mean they
are not talented... Gotta remember their music is COMMERCIAL
which does include alot of insane playing, Dinosaur gallaps..
etc...
Alot of insane playin would be considered overplaying and
overkill!!
I know of a guatarist that played in a MEGA poser band that
would BLOW away anyone from Kiss or Maiden!!

Maybe the musicianship in Maiden is higher then that in Kiss, but Kiss
write music in infinately more versatile styles then Maiden. Like some
of the songs ACTUALLY are in (get this) different keys, at (woah)

I don't want hard feelings or anything, but who are you listening to.
It can't be maiden....
IRON MAIDEN \
KILLERS - Have different singer. All instrument sounds are raw.
MAIDEN JAPAN /
The NUmber of the Beast \
- They sound VAGUELY alike. The closest any
No Prayer for the dying / 2 IM albums alike (disreguarding 1st 3)
Piece of mind -less distortion, more finger board action.
Powerslave - Back to distortion, fast and crunchy (TM). Drums shine.
Some Where In time - much less distortion. Instuments take a back seat
to vocals, but they are not left out.
Seventh Son - Keyboards, 18 different gituars, Organ, orchestra, yeah
that sounds a lot like all the other IM albums!
i should take offense since IM is my FAVORITE BAND OF ALL TIME....but I
won't, why you say, cause it's your opinion.

Exactly....Maiden is one of the most energenic band around, with the
addition of Janick Gers the band is probably the most energenic band..
a few examples:
1) Nicko Mcbrain doesn't sit his ass behind the drum kit all night. He
gets up and moves about. He doesn't flash the audience with his Rear
cheeks either....that's a posuer move.
2) Steve Harris was always bouncing and jumping. He leaps over the
stage indents like he was running the 100 meter hurdle. The Best
bassist in metal AND rock, Musically, Lyrically, and Energenically.
3) Bruce does a lot more crowd orientated stuff now-a-days. A lot of
patter and a lot of jumping around, loves to start off those
sing-a-longs.
4) The 'Post-Gers' Dave Murray just stood and played. Now he moves
about hardly ever standing still (even in solos!) Whether it's
messing with Janick, or Steve Or floppin' around with Nicko...dave
is not the same player he was before the smith leaving.
5) Janick Gers. The guy never touches the same place on the stage
twice. He plays while running. Plays while foolin' with the big
eddie, plays his guitar ON the p.a. system. (and it sounds good).
The most energenic guy in the band.
That's it for now....IM not exciting....that's funny.

Kiss and Maiden have two totally diffrent styles of music which both
fall under the classification of Heavy Metal...
I've seen Maiden 2 times, the Powerslave tour was great the Lost In
Time tour a so, so.... I've never seen Kiss but, depending on what
they played I think it could be a really good show. Some of there
older stuff of Destroyer, Rock and Roll Over, Dressed to Kill is really
good stuff.

| I heard three songs from this new album while driving across Kansas
yesterday (thank heaven for college radio...) I've also heard another
one.
Basically, they sounded very "Maiden-esque", but sort of missing
something. The first thing that bothered me was Bruce Dickinson's
voice. He sounds all raspy and seems to have lost a lot of his range.
He was just kind of shouting out a lot of the lyrics instead of really
singing them like he used to.
The next thing that bugged me was that as far as I could tell, the
guitar solos were completely directionless. It was like, "Let's blast a
bunch of random notes out here and hope it flys". It didn't for me.
Seemed like the old songs had a lot of cool, memorible solos in 'em,
the only thing memorible about these was how terrible they were.
I suppose that if I could have gotten past those two things I'd
probably like the songs, but they bothered me enough that I won't be
buying the album anyway, so they probably won't get the chance.
As it happened, I was much happier when the "Maiden set" was over and
that station played some music by the Henry Rollins Band and some cool
local stuff. I think IM should probably have retired a couple of
albums ago.

In a word, cr*p. Derek Riggs offers up some painfully amatuerish

I regret not picking up was "Live Plus One" which was originally

this great shop just next to Hammersmith Odeon where I'd spend
hours sifting through all those Japanese imports. There was that
place and the old Shades shop, just off Wardour Street, before they

Yeah, but not for long! :')
Except I didn't realize it was 'bonce'..... I thought they said
'bumps', but if bonce means head, you must be right... it makes more
sense that way.
BTW, anyone see Headbangers ball over the weekend? Bruce Dickinson &
Nikko McBrain were 'da hosts. They were ragging on some of the videos
claiming G&R's November Rain put them to sleep, and making fun of the
title to Def Leppards 'Make Love Like A Man'.
It went something like this...
Bruce: Do you... make love like a man?
Nikko: Oh, all the time!
Bruce: Of course! You would, wouldn't you seeing as how you are... a
man!
Nikko: Yes. of course if I was a woman I guess I'd make love like a
woman!

17.436 | Set list from Iron Maiden show in S.F. | VCSESU::COOK | The Cookster! | Mon Jul 06 1992 10:10 | 53 |
| From: [email protected] (Clark Olson)
Newsgroups: alt.rock-n-roll.metal
Subject: Iron Maiden / Testament / C.O.C.
Date: 2 Jul 1992 19:31:19 GMT
I saw the Iron Maiden/Testament/Corrosion Of Conformity show at the
Cow Palace in San Francisco last night. Iron Maiden set list was as follows:
Be Quick Or Be Dead
The Number of the Beast
Wrathchild
From Here To Eternity
Wasting Love
Tailgunner
The Evil That Men Do
Afraid To Shoot Strangers
Fear Of The Dark
The Clairvoyant
Heaven Can Wait
Run To The Hills
Two Minutes To Midnight
Iron Maiden
Encore:
Hallowed Be Thy Name
The Trooper
Sanctuary
Overall, a very satisfying concert, although I would have like to have seen
a few more songs from Powerslave or earlier (e.g. Aces High, Powerslave,
Murders In The Rue Morgue, Charlotte The Harlot.) The only played one
song off each of Powerslave and Piece of Mind. Surprisingly, no Flight Of
Icarus (although I didn't mind, as it's overrated.)
During the song Iron Maiden, a very large head and hands of the beast from
the new album cover rose behind the stage and blew a lot of smoke. (It was
pretty cool actually.)
Testament played:
Electric Crown
So Many Lies
Practice What You Preach
Souls Of Black
The Ritual
Let Go Of My World
Deadline
and a couple of older songs I didn't know.

but according to their drummer, it's gonna be a heavy one.
I've always been a big fan of this band. However, with the
recent and not-so-recent departures of a couple band members,
the bottom seems to have dropped out bigtime (so has my interest).
We'll see,

| Out of curiosity, I picked a copy of an old Samson LP in a bargain bin a couple of
weeks ago, which has a track called Thunderburst on it.
This turns out to be a raw version of the Ides of March and is credited as being
co-writtten by S.Harris.
This album was released in 1980 but Killers wasn't released until 1981 and has
Harris credited as the only writer of the Ides..
Very strange.
Does anyone out there know the story behind this one ?
Cheers,
Ian.

| Apparently Samson and Harris are good friends and Harris approched then
current drummer Thunderstick and gave him some notes. Thunderstick
incorporated these and changed a bit here and there and voila... the
same instumental (more or less). This is according to an old interview
I read in Hit Parader in 84 or 85.
Why Harris has sole credit on Killers is beyond me.
BTW which recording do you have? I own Head On, which the above is
from, and another one, the name escapes me, but it has an interview
with Dickinson circa 89.

As was mentioned, the album does seem to be "slow" overall, but
the guitarists do some ripping here and there anyways.
But, this new singer [Blayze?] doesn't do anything for me. IMO,
bring back Bruce so it actually sounds like Iron Maiden. The
band just isn't the same without him. All I could think while
hearing Blayze singing was "YAWN".
I'll have to give this another listen or 2 as well, and maybe
it'll sound better the next time.

| Hi out there,
Yesterday we went to the Maiden show in Nice.
As usual Maiden delivered the goods. It was a strange feeling though as it
was more like a private concert (2000 fans0.
The X-factor album is not great but live it kicks, just as if
they had another singer ....
Harris, Gers, Murray and Mc Brain still rule : packets of
energy. As Bailey he is rather convincing considering it's his first outing
with Maiden.
IM played all usual classics (their best : 2 minutes, Trooper,
Wrathchild, Iron Maiden, Heaven can wait, ...) as well as new stuff from the
X-factor LP (The sing of the cross, The aftermath, After the war and Lord of
the flies).
The show was great, live they can still burn all the place down
and put a hell of passion. Surprise to see that Bailey although no close to
Dickinson did a fairly honest soon.
Come on, go and see these guys : U won't regreat it and stop
saying they are no good or what : they have the right to make commercial
records to make money (they deserve it considering all what they brought TO
HM).
Cheers.

> Awright, who went to the show last night?
The show was sold out. I missed Fear Factory.
The stage was very small, like 20 feet across. I was getting excited at
the prospect of the band filling that small stage. Nicko was dug in behind
his drum kit so I couldn't catch a glimpse of him until after the set, when
he came out and threw a few drumsticks into the audience that jokingly ran
off the stage to avoid getting hit by sticks potentially thrown back at
him. The sound was pretty good. The bass drum was absolutely pounding at
first. It was very clear and very punchy. I thought it masked all of
Steve Harris' bass dynamics. I put my ear plugs in at the beginning but it
cut too much out, so I removed them. Bailey is a pretty good singer, but
he doesn't cut it compared to Dickinson, specially in the areas of high
notes and clear vocals. After the first song Gers threw his guitar up in
the air, spinning, then caught it on the way down. He also loved to twirl
the guitar around his neck by the strap. He did that a lot. They all
jumped around a lot except for Bailey who stayed in the center for the most
part. Harris had his "evil smile" on a lot.
These guys know how to rock. They impressed me with their precise rhythms.
Nicko's bass drumming was the driving force, and Harris loves to lip
sync the songs (hell, he wrote 'em all) while he pounds the bass strings.
Very rarely did I notice a loss of sync between the rhythm and the
guitars/vocals. The first half of the show was primarily new songs. The
new stuff, which I'm not too familiar with, still had that good ol' Iron
Maiden chunka-chunka feel to it. In fact, some of the new songs had a
strong feel of older Maiden songs. I guess after 16 years it's expected.
One of the things I loved last night was that they would change around the
jam sections of most of their old songs, giving them new life. There were
frequent rhythm changes, and they'd stay on the new theme for a while
before coming back to the song's main line. Of course, without missing a
beat.
I was hoping to hear more classics. Absent from the set were Revelations,
22 Acacia Avenue, Aces High, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Killers,
Phantom of the Opera - hell, I guess I could just list their first six
albums here :-)
If anyone's going tonight in Providence, I'd be curious to know if they
change the set list around. They started around 10:10 PM and ended at
11:55 PM. I think the "encore" started with Number of the Beast.
Here's the set list. Sorry for the (?)'s, I only really know their stuff

All/most of the Iron Maiden albums have been re-released with
additional tracks.
The new "Piece of Mind" includes "Cross-Eyed Mary".
But I sure hope they do what Megadeth did with "Hidden Treasures"
and release an album with just new/unreleased tracks so we don't
have to buy all the albums again for the new stuff ... although I
did buy the new "Piece of Mind", but I won't buy them all again

I have an old Piece of Mind picture disk that has the "Cross-Eyed

now included on the re-released albums are B-sides to the singles

I wouldn't buy all the CD's again just for those songs.

A bit of a clarification ... the re-releases include a 2nd CD
with the unreleased tracks. The tracks aren't just tagged
onto the end of the original album.
And the "Piece of Mind" re-release, the only 1 I have so far,
is a "picture disc" featuring The Trooper. The 2nd CD is a
new [to me] design and includes "I've Got the Fire" [Montrose]
and "Cross-Eyed Mary" [Jethro Tull].
The insert says that the 1st 10 CD's have been re-released
