    Hockey, as a defensive orientATed continuous state game, engenders
    fan stress in a "roller coaster" manner, with the fans mental state
    alternating between elation and fear as play centers around either
    the vistors' and homies' goal respectively.  Hockey fans are drawn
    into a continuous mental state that acts as a real-time analog to 
    what is happening on the ice.  This results in a form of manic
    obsessiveness, one that is heightened with the added dimension of 
    hot goalie play - ("no, I will not be penetrated by your advances 
    and I reject you" or "yes, penetration is complete and it was good")
    - and also the added dimension of the power play ("you are outnumbered,
    so just lay back and enjoy it").  The game of hockey is emblematic of
    mankind's territorial imperative, and succeeds in delivering in its
    fans the cathartic experience of agressive behavior at the direct 
    expense of approach-avoidance behaviors.  When the red light blinks
    after a goal, it symbolizes to the fan either a brief moment of blind
    euphoria or gloom.  Then the fan gets back on the "roller coaster" for
    another spin, his/her adrenaline gland all the while flapping open and
    closed as the object of frustrated desire, the puck, attempts to make
    good its threats of penetration yet again.
    
    Where football stands as an analog to our race memory of military conquest
    and organizational forms; hockey appeals to something much deeper, more
    primordial in nature: the pack instinct.  That the players are donned in
    uniforms not dissimilar to those of pre-medieval warriors presents to the
    fan a "cultural signature" only reinforced by the fact that the players
    carry clubs in their hands and wear knives on their feet.  That the puck
    as the object of desire and the center of attention resembles an offal
    that has been flattened underfoot signifies the intensely anal retentive
    nature of organized warfare and the pack's assertive desire to slap such
    group-based repression away.
    
    This psychological milieu naturally intensifies by a_order of magnitude

    Heck, I ain't gonna try to extract any previous notes, I'm just gonna
    nominate John Hendry.  While I consider quite a few of my fellow noters
    to be worthy of nomination, I give special note to John because of his
    taking the time and effort to answer many, many questions posed in
    here.
    
    John doesn't often get emotional in his noting.  He usually sticks to
    statistics and facts.  And, when he does entry a bogus fact or number,
    he is quick to call attention to it and make the correction.  Me, I
    wait for someone else to find my errors.  Used to keep the Dinz pretty
    busy!  :*)

    Tis true that Sid's Leadville entries rank among the highest quality
    stuff even entered in here.  This raises an interesting question
    though.  Just what does NoTY mean?  Sid's put in maybe 20 or so notes
    for the year (and all high quality too) but he is mostly a RON and
    hasn't tried to be a F_L!   Others here cover the entire spectrum of
    subjects and foster continued "dialog" (ha!).  
    Others here also have a flair for excellent writing too (i.e. 'Saw's
    much looked for holiday essays - Memorial day, 4th, Bird-day, and of
    course, the Christmas thang)
    Is humorous entries part of the criteria?
    What about considering those who have endured the most abuse but still
    endure (ACC Chris and Hal immediately come to mind)?
    
    Should the 1991 NoTY awards have several catagories?  I mean, there are
    MVP's (Like NoTY), 6th man awards, Athelete of the year, etc.

    for F_L's to be smart, it would help the voters immensely if we
    mimmicked a process which has been suggested in an internal-financially

    certain ranking member of this community frequently participates in

All I will say is that I enjoy noting in SPORTS, and I enjoy writing
the essays because I feel it's a form of self-expression that makes
me happy.  I've heard from others that they smile also when reading
the Chainsaw's essays.

At a time when everyone is concerned about being politically correct,
/Don has come out of the closet, so to speak, and taken that unpopular if
not ridiculous position of supporting Dean Smith and his No Carolina Tar
Heel Basketball System. And this is after last season's tourney loss to
Kansas that included such highlights as Rick Fox clanging, Dean getting
the thumb, and Dean congratulating the Kansas players with time on the
clock. Anyone who can jump on that bandwagon has got to deserve some type

I know what ya mean j.,  I never really hated the Broncos until I started
reading *::Sports*, even though they have inflicted some heart-breaking

award had degenerated into some sort of tag-team event that year. Myself 
and a few others thought this wasn't right.  The NoTY going to a tag-team
just could't happen. At one point you were the only announced candidate that
had not picked a tag-team partner (more likely noone would accept) and because
of this I was going to award you the NOTY.  Then you went and annouced someone 
(who was it?) as your partner.  I was then forced to do what I did.

Tradition is never original.

To a person of Scottish descent, the skirl of the pipes harkens back to
an ancestral homeland.  While perhaps not one of the myriad pipe songs
handed down from ancient Scotland, Amazing Grace fits the pipes really
well.

If you've ever been to a Fire Dept funeral, where pipers pipe Amazing
Grace, you know the emotive power the tune can bring forth.

Personally, I like The Flower of Scotland, played by a lone piper.  It
is, to a person of Scottish descent, what Danny Boy is to the Irish....

    I do that on my guitar using an Ebow.  You can get some really cool
    bagpipes/strings/cello sounds out of the guitar using it.

I've always wanted to learn to play the pipes.  

Unfortunately, the one good pipe band around here won't accept people
over 15 to learn to play the pipes, because the guy who runs it says
(quote) "I don't think older people can learn.  they won't put the effort
into it"....

I'm trying to get a chanter and a book, and I'll teach myself (a chanter
is like a recorder, only fingered like the pipes and without the air bag
and drones).

If anyone knows of anyone in this area that teaches....

I grew up in Glastonbury.  Lived out in the "east" end of town, more
properly called East Glastonbury, just a short hike from the Marlborough
town line.

Glastonbury is east and south of Hartford, bordering the Connecticut
River.  It's the second largest town in terms of area in the state.


I now live in Hebron, which is a small town next door to Glastonbury.
For years it was predominantly a dairy farming town, with lots of farms
and rolling hills, and pretty woods.  Lots and lots of wildlife.
In the spring, I always see deer, and as spring rolls into summer,
if my landlord (the farmer) lets the pasture out back of my house
grow up for hay, I'll see young deer popping their heads up out of the
hay by my back fence.


I'm about 15-20 minutes out of Hartford, depending on traffic.

If you look on a map of Connecticut, find the intersection of state routes
85 and 94, and I'm � mile from there north on 85.


My dad grew up in the Old Lyme area and Glastonbury...
