| RE: Suffolk U.
My undergraduate alma mater, and undoubtedly one of the poorest excuses for
an institute of higher learning in the Boston area.
When I was there the student body (except those of us in the business school)
had a 'strike'. They marched around the admin building shouting "We're not
through, Suffolk U", which naturally became "We're not through, so F*&K you!"
The school actually had a respectable div.3 hoop program for a number of years.
They would generally make the tournament, and attract some good HS players from
the nearby suburbs. They went downhill when the coach of 30+ years, Charlie Law
passed on.
The Red Hat was the unofficial campus bar - Friday's at 11 am we would report,
blowing off PM classes, drink until about 6 PM, and then stumble onto the MBTA
trains to go home.

Williams had its longest in the nation 23-game winning streak stopped at

beat Williams. Trinity scored with 51 seconds left to make the game
24-20. Less than 20 seconds later, Williams scored to go back ahead
27-24. Trinity came back down the field and was stopped at the
Williams 5 yard line and tried to call time out but there was no time
left on the clock. The referee ruled that there was still 1 second
left and Trinity hit a 5 yard TD pass to win it. Wish I'd been there.

Agree with you on Salisbury state - they are viewed as a 'gravy' team

| Oh, I can see it now. I'm having a VISION...
A late fall Friday night. The bus is loaded with beer, and the
last of the New England SPORTS noters is just boarding.
The bus driver pulls out and jumps onto I-91 and then I-95.
A quick stop to pick up more beer and a certain Pittsburgh noter (who
travelled east to meet us) and we're on the road again.
Friday night turns into early Saturday morning, and the Noters on the
bus eschew beer alone for beer and hard stuff. The aroma of tequila,
vodka, and Jack Daniels fills the bus.
With a magnanimous feeling in their hearts, the Noters toss a 6-pack
to the driver.
Soon, the bus passes Washington DC, and heads for I-85.
Around dawn on Saturday morning the bus pulls over. The driver, a little
smile on his face despite his task, goes and vents the coach's toilet.
He returns to his drivers seat, and pulls onto the road.
A few miles further on, as the first pink rays of the sun are creeping
over the horizon, he pulls over. The esteemed Messrs Hunt and Medvid
board the bus. One lone snore escapes from the very back, but the
Noters who are still pounding away at the beers and whisky toss
a beer, a symbolic baton in this drunken relay, to Hunt and Medvid, belch
a little and get ready for the home stretch.
Once into South Carolina, the bus pulls over at a diner. The Noters fill
up on black coffee and good southern cooking. The back on the bus.
A few hours later they pull up to Wofford U, Mecca for this journey......

| I'm not entirely sure of the derivation of Wesleyan, but I'll take a
guess. There is a name Wesley associated with one of the Protestant
churches in the US, I believe it's the Methodist Church. I'm willing
to bet that Wesleyan comes from that.

I'm sitting here stretching my memory, because I used to know a lot
about stuff like this through a lot of experience with liturgical music.
Welsey was indeed a religious figure, and I believe he wrote a hymn
or two in my time. I'm not 100% positive but I think John is right
that Wesley (the full name John Wesley comes to mind) was indeed involved
in the Methodist church.
Now, I think the Methodists were prominent in Scotland, but I could be
wrong. I know my Dad is of Scottish origin and his whole side of the
family are Methodists.
What would make a great game was if there was a Calvin U. and they
played Wesleyan.
The Calvinists were a religious sect here in the US also. Herman Melville
wrote an allegorical short story called "The Lightning Rod Salesman" whih
was a debate on the merits of Calvinism vs another religion, forget which
one...
Hope all of this helps.

| I believe that John Wesley is the founder of the Methodist
denomination. (I went to a Methodist youth group in high school.) He
also wrote a number of well-known hymns, but I don't have a hymnal at
work, so can't look up in the author's index and quote any of them (I
just sing them, never know the author or composer).
All of the Wesleyan colleges were at one point or another associated
with the Methodist church. Most of them are no longer sectarian
schools.

Shawn Graves - the junior Quarterback for Wofford - broke the NCAA's
all-time rushing mark for quarterbacks. Graves ran for 170 yards (in
the first half - he sat out the 2nd half, as Wofford was winning
by a lot), giving him 3,779 yards, passing Air Force's Dee Dowis old
mark of 3,612. Graves is averaging 140 yards a game rushing for his
career, and at that pace, could end up as the 4th leading rusher

Prairie View is now 0-8 and has been outscored 369-22 this season.

Amherst, Bates, Bowdoin, Colby, Hamilton, Middlebury, Trinity, Tufts,
Wesleyan and Williams has decreed that its members can only play
football games against each other. Thus, the 102-year old rivalry
between Hamilton and Union and the 98-year old rivalry between
Middlebury and Norwich have both ended this season. WPI and Coast
Guard are also affected. WPI has been playing both Amherst and Bowdoin
and Coast Guard has been playing both Trinity and Wesleyan.

I think that is Holy Cross' decision and not a conference rule. I read
about a month ago somewhere that there's 3 teams in I-AA that refuse to
participate in post-season play for what reason I have no idea, but
Holy Cross was one of them.

| It's the entire Patriot League that doesn't participate in post-season
play. The Patriot League (a/k/a the Ivy League wannabes) consist of
Bucknell, Colgate, Fordham, Holy Cross, Lafayette and Lehigh.
Grambling and Southern don't participate in 1-AA playoffs because they
play each other in New Orleans on Thanksgiving weekend and that's after
the 1-AA season is supposed to be over. I have no idea who the 3rd
team would be but the Ivy League and the Patriot League don't allow
their teams to play post-season football.

While I support NESCAC in some ways (ie it puts
the proper emphasis on academics) I don't understand some
of these stupid rules. When I was at Union in the early 70's
there was much debate and acrimony about the NESCAC
rules against playing too many games or games too late in
the season which cost Union several NCAA Div II bids in
hoops. I think this was one of the reasons why Union
eventually dropped out.
Who cares if the league members want to play
some non-league games to maintain rivalries, what's
the BFD anyway?? :-(

Holy Cross may be the most overrated team in college football, Division
1-A or 1-AA. Every weekend it seems that they just squeak by one
of these weak Patriot Conference foes (this past weekend against 2-7
Fordham in Ireland). I think they're better off not going to the
playoffs and playing up this "what could have been" undefeated record
thing, because your basic 1-AA powers like Eastern Kentucky, Nevada,
or Northern Iowa would be all over them so fast their heads would spin.
Just like in Division 1-A, if a team from the Northeast wants respect,
they've got to get out and play with the big boys once and a while...

I couldn't resist. I've been waiting for The One Right and True Wesleyan
to start their season.
Seeing their score, and that they began the season in a GLORIOUS
manner with a victory over Tufts, I got a woody, and had to put the score
in.
Of course, I *was* **hoping** that you'd include the score in your
unique and "often imitated, never equaled" fashion, so that I could again
feel that rush of pleasure as I hear how the little school in Middletown
beat up on Tracy Chapman U.

Subject: Illinois Wesleyan's Bisaillon sets NCAA TD reception record
Date: Sat, 24 Oct 92 18:12:15 PDT
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (UPI) -- Chris Bisaillon of Illinois Wesleyan caught
four touchdown passes Saturday in a 63-8 rout of Carthage College to
break Jerry Rice's NCAA career TD reception record.
Bisaillon, a 6-1, 170-pound senior, surpassed Rice, who caught 50
touchdown passes at Division I-AA Mississippi Valley State from 1981-84.
Rice currently is among the National Football League's best receivers
and is just three TD receptions shy of the NFL mark of 100.
Bisaillon caught scoring strikes of 24, 2, 8 and 45 yards Saturday.
He ended the day with five receptions for 98 yards. Bisaillon has 205
career receptions for 3,328 yards -- an average of 16.2 yards per catch.
He has three games remaining in his college career.
Bisaillon had eclipsed the NCAA Division III record last season,
breaking the mark of 39 held by John Aromando, who played for Trenton
State from 1981-84, and John Stromberg, who played for Johns Hopkins
from 1978-81.
The NCAA Division I record is 38 by Clarkston Hines, who played at
Duke from 1986-89.
A graduate of Herscher High School, Bisaillon was a first-team member
of the GTE Academic All-America team last season. He has a grade-point
average of 3.65 on a 4-point scale, with a major in risk management and
financial services.

| Well, as we all know, the purpose of collegiate athletics is not to
produce egotistical, cro-magnum, athletes, but rather, to enrich the
academic experience for all students at a university. The spirit and
pride a team can instill on the schools populance is astronomical.
A losing program with fine athletes and scholars is more in keeping
with the collegiate ideal then a winning a program that doesn't
graduate its players, has them act like street thugs, or take bribes in
the name of loans. With that, I report on the honorable doings of
the fine scholar athletes of Wesleyan, and others. It was a tough
week for Wesleyan - but the score doesn't reflect the overall excellence
of the programs:
Illinois Wesleyan nipped North Park 42 - GOOSE EGG BABY!
Trinity crossed Wesleyan 37 - 13
Peru State llama'd Nebraska Wesleyan 54 - 6
Southwester Kansas kerneled Kansas Wesleyan 51 - 20
Wayne bruced Iowa Wesleyan 48 - 11

Nope.
I'm a Central Ct. State Blue Devil! [insert Blue Devil salute right here].
Unfortunately, the heads of the college, in a misguided effort at being
politically correct, replaced the statue of the Blue Devil in the
Student Center, with a piece of abstract act repudiated to "represent"
a Blue Devil.
In yet another odious act, they moved the original Blue Devil upstairs
after removing its rather substantial package. Needless to say I
am heartily disappointed.....

| Marc -
I believe in these playoff OT's, they play another quarter, not sudden death. If
not, they play 'last chance' ot's - which means if one team scores, the other
team gets the ball to try to score.
My guess is one team either scored first, got the one-pointer, and the second
team did the 2-point conversion.
