note there is majority agreement that the Giants receivers wouldn't
even make the Jets and that the Giants offense is boring.
Dan pointed this out to the Giants fans, and they overwhelmingly
agreed.

Hey Paul...can I fire up the Jets discussions now? Pirates had a great
run, got stomped in the end unfortunately.
Now, it's almost NFL draft day, and the Jets don't have a first round
pick. The question is, was Rob Moore worth it? I think so.
JoJ

44.10 | Moore well worth it. | VAXWRK::SCHNEIDER | The crux of the biscuit | Mon Mar 25 1991 14:40 | 7 |
| Moore was definitely worth it. If he were coming out this year, he'd
be a top 3 pick. Also, the positions the Jets need help this year,
offensive and defensive linemen, are thin at the high end, meaning the
Jets aren't losing much by taking either of those positions in the 2nd
round.

But, my most favorite teams are:
Yankees, A's, Cubs....in that order in baseball

Seton Hall, St. Johns, the Big East, Duke, NC, the ACC....in that order

| Alright, A "Wonder Years" clique. Easily my favorite show ... the only
one on my list that's truly a "must see" at all costs.
I have faith in Kevin but maybe it's because Madeline is so incredibly hot
looking for a junior high kid that I want her to become a series regular.
I love how he gets the Cliff Claven brain cramp syndrome whenever she says
something to him especially in French.
Wayne is my favorite character, hands down. They usually only give him
about 15 or 30 seconds on screen in each episode but he's the focal point
of every second he's there. I had seen last night's episode when it
first ran a few months back and last night I anxiously waited for his one
and only spot where he snatches the "Kevin Amold" bracelet from him and
then falls over laughing. Great stuff.
And the way they portray the teachers is hilarious, too. The incredibly
morose and gloomy science teacher from "Ferris Bueller" is a riot and last
night when he showing black widow spider films while Kevin was wondering
how best to tell Winnie his original bracelet was lost was classic.
And the French teacher last night, too. Didn't you just want to smack
her ??? She was perfect with that sick happy smile and the "Bonjour, la
class" greeting. And Cutlip the Marine Corps gym teacher gets me
rolling everytime he's on, too.
Great great show. Best on the tube. Madeline is a stone fox and Winnie
can have the other kid at Lincoln for all I care. I'm rooting for Kevin
and Madeline big time. Although she will be quite the challenge for the
young lad.

Ryan was cut a year ago. Eason is a free agent who the Jets won't
touch. I don't think Mackey has been with the team for a year.
Besides O'Brien, Shonert and Nagel, the Jets have Troy Taylor, last
year's 4th rounder. SUpposedly O'Brien and Taylor will battle for #1
this year, but that was before Shonert entered the picture. I don't
know what the plans are for him, but if he stays with the team I

at are WR and RB. They took a few RBs deeper in the draft, but the

Steinberg has a history of destroying a team. Just look what he

Marinovich was the first QB on the Jets list. I don't see 4 deep
either. Kenny O can't keep having these pro-bowl quality seasons
forever, Troy Taylor is an unproven second year player who I'd like to
see develop but the odds aren't with him, Turk Shonert is a recent
addition to the team and has only been a capable backup through his 10
NFL years. That's only 3 guys, and their is definitely a need to
develop a future long term starter.
>Steinberg has a history of destroying a team. Just look what he
>did to the Pats.
Not that every draft was a great success, but Steinberg had a lot more
wins than losses as far as that goes. It was the Sullivans that did in
the Pats, not Dick Steinberg. Steinberg developed the reputation in LA
and then NE of having a fine eye for talent. I'm quite pleased with
what he's done with the Jets.

Here are the people Steinberg took in the first three rounds of
the NFL draft, plus the pathetic trades he made during his tenure:
1981: #1 (19th) Brian Holloway OT- a useless tub of goo
#2 (47th) Tony Collins RB - decent until nose candy problems
#3 - traded for Chuck Foreman UNBELIEVABLY BAD DEAL!!!!
Rating for 1981 Draft: D
1982: #1 (1st) Kem Sims DT - may have been OK player without injuries
#1 (27th) Lester Williams DE - total bust
#2 (40th) Robert Weathers RB - rarely played, cut after 2 years
THIS GUY WAS A TYPICAL STEINBERG PICK 6-4, 235 GREAT PHYSICAL SPECIMEN.
ONLY TROUBLE WAS HE COULDN'T PLAY FOOTBALL. BUT HE LOOKED GREAT ON THE
COMPUTER!!!
#2 (41st) Andre Tippett LB - great football player
#2 (55th) Darryl Haley OT - complete washout, cut after 3 years
#3 (56th) Cedric Jones WR - clutch receiver; decent career
#3 (60th) Clayton Weishuhn LB - would've been great; knee injury
Rating for 1982 Draft: C (But with so many high picks, it should
have been an A easily - half the picks were complete losers)
1983: #1 (15th) Tony Eason QB - ahead of Dan Marino
#2 (47th) Darryal Wilson WR - WHO???? Never made one appearance
#3 (74th) Stephen Starring WR - played 4 yrs; never learned plays
#3 (80th) Steve Moore OT - good player 'til weight problem
Rating for 1983 Draft: D+
1984: #1 (1st) Irving Fryar WR - no comment
#2 (43rd) Ed Williams LB - marginal talent, rarely played
#3 (70th) Jonathan Williams RB - WHO????? never played a down
Rating for 1984 Draft: D-
1985: #1 (16th) Traded to San Francisco for 28th and 56th picks
San Francisco took Jerry Rice. This could be worst trade in
the history of the NFL.
#1 (28th) Trevor Matich C - nice guy, couldn't block a lick
#2 (48th) Garin Veris DE - nice player, but always getting hurt
#2 (52nd) Jim Bowman DB - marginal player, never a starter
#2 (56th) Ben Thomas DE - lasted one season, cut
#3 (79th) to San Francisco, part of previous deal
#3 (84th) Audrey McMillen DB - never made team
Rating for 1985 Draft: F
1986: #1 (26th) Reggie Dupard RB - almost total bust; Neil Anderson
of Chicago was the next player taken in draft - nice choice, Dick!!!
#2 (42nd) (from Seattle for Bob Cryder) Mike Ruth NT - a bust
#2 (54th) Vencie Glenn DB - cut in training camp, starter for
three or four years with Chargers
#3 forfeited by coach Ron Meyer's stashing player on IR
Rating for 1986 Draft: F
1987: #1 (23rd) Bruce Armstrong OT - excellent selection
#2 (50th) traded as part of deal for Sean Farrell
#3 (79th) Bob Perryman FB - pervert, loser, cut in mid-season
Rating for 1987 Draft: C
1988: #1 (17th) John Stephens RB - one good season out of three
#2 (43rd) Vincent Brown LB - great body and potential, few results
#3 (69th) Tom Rehder OT - never started, lost in Plan B
Rating for 1988 Draft: C-
1989: #1 (16th) Hart Lee Dykes WR - overrated, won't go over middle
#2 (43rd) Eric Coleman DB - never started, longshot to make team
#3 (63rd) Marv Cook TE - turned into a decent player
#3 (79th) Chris Gannon DE - never played a down
Rating for 1989 Draft: C
Out of 35 players selected by Steinberg in the first three rounds of
the NFL Draft (including 11 first rounders, two of which were the #1
selection in the country), I've counted three whose careers were
severely impacted by injury (Weishuhn, Moore, Veris), eight decent
players (Collins, Sims, Jones, Fryar, Stephens, Brown, Cook, Dykes),
and only two outstanding Pro-Bowl types (Tippett, Armstrong).
That is an abominable record, one Steinberg should be ashamed of.

the Physically Unable to Perform list on August 28. This was after
he'd played the 1989 season for San Diego after being in the Patriots
last cut in 1989. Gannon was reactivated on November 6 of last year.
He played in the last 6 games of the year and started the last two.
His only official stat came against the Redskins. He was the long
snapper on punts. On our second offensive possession (after the Skins
returned a fumble for a TD during our first possession) he snapped the
ball over punter Brian Hansen's head and out of the end zone for a
safety. He was credited with a rush for no yards and a fumble.

Excellent Note NAZZ.
The Pats paid for the years that you mentioned last season (and the one before).
There is almost always sommeone chosen after the Pats pick that it didn't take
a genius to see would be better (i.e. Richmond Webb).

here for those of you not in the NE note.
And as I've said in the Patriots' conference, you are looking at this
completely out of context with what happened around those picks, the
crapshoot the NFL draft represents, and letting some dislike of
individual players cloud your objectivity.
Steinberg was supposed to be clairvoyent and predict the injuries of
Simms, Weisuhn, and others? Many other players were picked ahead of
Dan Marino in the '83 draft so to fault him for that is reaching.
What's the average success rate of the NFL draft?

| Well, Nazz, you've got a lot of sour grapes you've been chewing on.
Right off the top, let's look at how you graded the 1981 draft as a
prime example.
>#1 Holloway, #2 Collins, #3 traded.
With a relatively low pick in the draft he took a player that developed
into a pro bowler and followed up with a 1000 yard rusher. Sure
neither sustained success, but you are not going to name me one NFL GM,
coach or scout who was going to predict that when these guys were 21
years old.
Nazz rates that draft a D. If your favorite general manager on earth
picked a pro bowl offensive lineman and later a 1000 yard rusher, you'd
be doing hand stands and calling it an A, or B+ on the outside.
Similarly a draft where deep in round 2, Andre Tippett is plucked, you
give him a C. Any draft which unearths a largely unknown Andre Tippett
is not an average draft, my friend.
I only have one year to judge him on the Jets. He took Blair Thomas in
the first round, who should be a starting HB for the next 7 years or
so, Reggie Rembert as the #2 who was regarded as a steal, Tony Stargell
in #3 who started right away and should be there for years to come, and
a number of other useful players who not only made the team but some
like Terance Mathis and Dwayne White, played big roles. Then he took
Moore in the supplemental which was a brilliant move, not only looking
ahead to this years relatively weak draft, but he could afford to trade
away Rembert for a starting LB and OT from Cinci.
The Jets had one of the best drafts in football last year. When you
look at how other teams do in these things, and then take a look at the
Patriots selections without the jaded viewpoint, you'll see there was a
good reason that the Pats were known in the mid to late 80s as having
some of the best talent in football.

I believe someone recently said in another topic that half of all
first-round picks become starters.
Given that, over 1/3 (13 of 35) of your picks in the *first three* rounds
becoming solid players seems like an OK percentage to me.

| OK - this is the last time I debate this.
1) Steinberg's first trade - a #3 pick for Chuck Foreman in 1981 - was
an unmitigated disaster.
2) In 1982, Steinberg had seven choices in the first three rounds.
Only ONE, Tippett, became a regular. Four of the seven were OUT
OF THE LEAGUE within four years. I think a C for that draft was
more than fair.
3) In 1983, after taking Eason, he takes another of his computer
printout perfect players Darryal Wilson as a WR in middle of
second round. Wilson was very fast, but had no clue how to run
a pass route and was cut before ever playing an NFL game.
4) The 1985 trade of draft picks (NE #1 for SF #1 and #2) turned into
the Pats trading Jerry Rice for Trevor Matich and Ben Thomas.
5) In 1986, he took Reggie Dupard ahead of Neal Anderson, who was the
next player selected. Anderson's an All-pro, Dupard's a reject.
6) Of all the players drafted by Steinberg (not just those in rounds
1-3) only six ever made the pro bowl: Collins (1), Holloway (2),
Marion (1), Stephens (1), Armstrong (1), and Tippett (5). Only
Tippett (and perhaps Armstrong) has showed the consistent high
quality play that one expects of a Pro-Bowl caliber player.
The bottom line is that Steinberg did a consistently bad job for
several seasons, and the pathetic depths that that Patriots fell to
are testimony to his handiwork.

This issue has a draft review. I think the Jets drafted well...all
Communications majors. I think they make up the bulk of the NFL

Browning Nagle is being billed as the next Jim Kelly. 3rd rounder Mo
Lewis is a cousin of Joe Greene...and good friends with Richard Dent.
Therefore, he must be good....he's hangin out with the right people.
The Jets 6th rounder is a RB with a Don King haircut. Steinberg says

For those of you who don't know GM for the Jets. He was saying that the
backfield looks to be strong this year and hinted that Blair and Brad
are the starting lineup. Hector and Mcneil will be used but they will
probably stay with the 2 primary boys. They are expecting alot from
blair and Brad was a nice surprise last year and is expected to spot
Blair when he needs a break. Jets were forth last year in the league in
rushing and that was with out Blair full time. Surprised? I was.
But alot had to do with the rotation of Mcneil and Hector. Blair lead
the team but thwe other 3 were close in the same yards last year. You
should see Blair and Brad starting Saturday nite and they want to look
at their 6th round pick RB Blaise Bryant from Iowa. GM said that he
had all vets and rookies in camp. No HO's so they are expecting a good
camp and should have a good season. Browning Nagle is still competeing
for #2 with Troy Taylor,. Someone in camp likes Troy Taylor and Nagle
is really going to have to show some stuff to get taylor out of #2.
Toon did hurt something during the first preseason but is fine now and
moore is looking good. They just need a QB to get them the ball.

At least we know that the Miami fans have now sunk as low as those in

Most experts agree that Brownie will be a standout QB once given the
opportunity to start. JoJ is still an O'Brien fan, but I don't think
Kenny can get out of his own way. I hope they don't sign him and are

The Pats will finish in last this season, right behind the Dolts. I
known its early, but, it's really hard to envision any team in the AFC East finishing ahead of the
Jets this season.
You have to figure the Bills will be a contender again, but the fish,
Pats, and Dolts will be lucky to win 10 games between them.
The Jets should follow up last years success with an even better record
and perhaps, home field advantage in the playoffs.
JoJ's friend Dan Schneider, who is always very objective when it comes
to the Jets, was quick to point out how the new tight end will really
open things up for the Jets offense. I suspect they'll really rack up
the points this season.

| It's been 26 years since the Jets went 4-0 in pre-season.
Jets dominated the much weaker, and much sloppier Giants this past
weekend. Nagle looked superb. He shredded the tired and old Giants
defense.
On an even brighter note, the Pats lost to the Lions by about 1000
points.
For those of you who missed the Manis this year, it was the usual good
time. Chainsaw paced himself so he was coherent during the game this
time. Cain't say the same for Hawk. But the Hawk was a riot.
Also, I won $5.00 from Dinz. He gave me the Jets +2. And, he even paid
up. He tried the old..."do you have change for a $50" routine, but I
did so he had to pay.

| Sunday kicks off the Jets banner 1992 season. The AFC east, usually one
of the most talented divisions in football, is going through a bit of a
change starting this year.
The reign of the Bills is coming to an end. The Fish are getting old
and inconsistent. And the Pats, well, lets just say they sip bigtime.
In the meantime, the Jets and the Colts are rebuilding and are on an
upswing.
The Colts are about where the Jets were 3 years ago. Spotty talent, but
a solid core which can be built up. Jeff George getting injured is a
minor setback because they are still a few years and a few players away
from being a good team.
The Jets...well, the Jets have one of the best offensive machines in
the game. Moore, Toon, Burkette, and Mathis would give any team fits.
The addition of a world class tight end, a much improved defense, and a
sound offensive line will enable them to win at least 11 games this
year.
Nagle will make everyone forget about O'Brien. In fact, he may make
everyone forget about Montana. He's that good.
So, the changing of the guard will lead to an AFC east that looks
something like this:
Jets
Bills
Fish
Colts
Pats
in two or three years, it will be:
Jets
Colts
Fish
Bills
Pats
Ahhhhh, the 90's are gonna be great.

News Flash:
Earlier today the Jets finally held true the prediction of last 20th
century philosopher JoJ_NOT. JoJ_NOT had predicted that the Jets would
"win 3 straight."
Beating the Sacremento Longhorns, Foxboro Hecklers, and the Portland
Aspens in the last three weeks. Philip DeTank, coach of the Portland
Aspens, had this to say: "I thought for sure that we'd win our first
game this season. Being 0-9 is tough, but losing to the Jets is worse.
Once the refs made that call in the 4th saying we were hovering too
close to the line of scrimmage I just knew they'd been paid off."

We stay in the Meadowlands Days Inn.
If you go up and hit 17 North (about a healthy spit from the hotel)
there's a few places up the strip that look okay. Some are the
NJ version of Nudie Bars (which only the Dinz could get excited about)
and some are regular old bars/pubs.

The Jets finally played up to their potential against the fish. The
return of Byrd made a major difference in the pass rush. Marino was
pressured all day.
O'Brien showed why he was at the pro-bowl last year. He had good
protection all day and picked apart the Dolphin's overrated defense.
I predict a follow up victory in Denver next week. Beyond that, the
Jets should beat Cincy and New England. They could be going for a 6-6
record on thanksgiving weekend against the Chiefs.

probability that the Jets finish at .500 is probably equal to above or
below.
However, if you somehow factor in the first 8 games, I would assume
that its more likely the will finish below .500 than above .500.
In fack, its probably more likely they will finish at .500 than above
.500.
Therefore, /Don, in order to "cover" himself (and admittedly this is a
big job), should have chosen "Over .500" for his end of the bet.
In any case, I'm sure you'll all be rooting for the Jets to finish at

The thing that amazes me about concussed players is that they let them
play again so soon. I suppose that's the big business aspect of pro
football.
In rugby, there's a law in the law book that a concussed player cannot
come back to play for two weeks. (I'm hazy on the time period, but

A Christmas poem for all you Jets fans
______________________________________
Twas the night before Christmas
and somewhere down south
Bobby Hebert was drinking
he was nearly soused
His teammates were shaking
under their beds
while visions of the Meadowlands
danced in their heads
The home field advantage
was outta their reach
and the cold of New Jersey
could just make them screech
When outside the hotel
there arose such a clatter
Hilliard jumped up
to see what was the matter
He raced to the window
and what should appear
but the leg of a chair
and he's out for the year
The rest of the players
rushed out to see
the NY Jets defense
lead by James Hasty
They all rubbed their eyes
as they could not believe
such a frightening sight
could appear Christmas Eve
Oh the fear in their eyes
this image did bring
as they thought of McMillan
and his terrible sting
For they all new the truth
regarding this team
and they thanked their stars
this was only a dream
But as they turned
to go on to bed
a new apparition
appeared in their heads
They knew that the defense
was one to be feared
but the vision of Nagle
seemed even more real
He spoke to the Saints
and he gave them advice
"Stay home for the holidays
don't even think twice"
"For my offense is ready
and primed for the game
we will put it together
we will not come up lame"
With that he turned
and called to his men
"Lets go out on a high note
and beat them by ten"
As he called to his team
the Saints just did frown
"go Baxter"
"go Mitchel"
"go A.B. Brown"
"With Burkett and Moore
we'll run up the score
so go back to bed
and try not to snore"

Subject: Referee denies making racial slur
Date: Sun, 27 Dec 92 19:24:20 PST
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (UPI) -- An NFL official Sunday said referee Larry
Nemmers denied using a racial epithet in reference to New York safety
Erik McMillan Saturday during a game against New Orleans but the league
will investigate the incident.
Joe Browne, the NFL vice president of communications and development,
said he spoke to Jets General Manager Dick Steinberg Sunday after
McMillan made the allegation to Steinberg and team president Steve
Gutman.
Steinberg said he would let the NFL investigate the incident.
``I told him (Steinberg) that Nemmers denies using any racial epithet
against McMillan and any other player but that our office would plan to
speak with Erik and whatever Jets may have heard it as soon as possible
to get his side of the story,'' Browne said.
McMillan spiked the ball at Nemmers in the fourth quarter of the
Jets' 20-0 season-ending loss to the Saints Saturday, drawing an
unsportsmanlike conduct penalty with 2 1-2 minutes left.
With two minutes left in the game, Jets Coach Bruce Coslet asked
inactive quarterback Ken O'Brien to take McMillan off the field into the
locker room.
``He lost his poise on the field,'' Coslet said. ``I had three or
four players come up to me and say 'You'd better do something about
Erik, because he may lose it.' That's when I asked Kenny if he wouldn't
mind taking him to the locker room.''
Coslet said he didn't know when the incident occurred but he thought
it might have been during a brief skirmish between Jets defensive tackle
Mario Johnson and Saints tackle Richard Cooper a few plays before
McMillan spiked the ball.
McMillan's locker was cleared out Sunday morning when the dressing
room was opened to reporters. A former Pro Bowl safety who spent the
past two years as a backup, McMillan is expected to leave the club in
the offseason when he becomes a free agent.
Nemmers, a high school pricipal, is in his eight year as an NFL
official.

Subject: Jet confirms slur by ref
Date: Tue, 29 Dec 92 9:39:21 PST
NEW YORK (UPI) -- Mario Johnson of the New York Jets gave the NFL a
written statement Monday corroborating a charge that a referee made a
racial slur at teammate Erik McMillan.
McMillan had claimed claim that referee Larry Nemmers made the remark
to him during a 20-0 loss to the New Orleans Saints Saturday.
McMillan informed Jets Coach Bruce Coslet, team president Steve
Gutman and several teammates, but no other player confirmed the incident
until Johnson, a defensive tackle, came forward.
A league spokesman said the NFL received Johnson's statement and
would review videotapes of the game. The league also received a written
report from Nemmers.
The incident allegedly took place late in the fourth quarter after
McMillan, a defensive back, received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty
for angrily spiking the ball near Nemmers. McMillan was pulled from the
game after the play.
Nemmers, an NFL official for eight seasons, is a high school
principal from Joliet, Ill.

| JoJ had the privilege of meeting up with the one and only Dan "Mr.
Objective" Schneider at Saturday's Jets game.
You guys would be proud of Dan...he had on some trendy clothes and
drove to the game in a Volvo (his mom's).
I guess Columbia is changing Dan into the Yuppie we always knew he was.
Why, I'll bet he even votes republican next election.
Dan says "hi" to all of those who miss him in the Sports
note...especially his buddies ACC_confessed and Jack "Jets fan" Hunter.

exploits. I heard he was busted for possesion of illegal substances.

I saw him box recently. Judging from that, it's surprising he can
even afford drugs.
