    Sorry to rathole this in the very first reply, but.....
    
    I need some help in a couple of different directions, both related
    to that great high school pastime, the college hunt.
    
    I've got a high school senior who plays soccer and runs track. 
    He's reasonably good at track (broke a school record last year,
    barring injury may break a state record this year).  He is now starting
    the "what do I do with the rest of my life, where do I go to school"
    pondering normally done by high school juniors.  [So, he's taking
    a year between high school and college and working instead.  I think
    it'll be good for him.]
    
    Anyway - anyone in here know of schools which are:
    	a) not in New England (esp Mass)
    	b) reasonably small - or small-attituded 
    	c) have a reasonable track program
    	d) have a soccer program.
    
    FWIW, his grades are adequate, his SATs are over 1100 combined,
    he's in the top 25% of his class, and he has leadership-type activities
    out the wazoo.  [What, me brag?  Surely you jest. :-)]
    
    Second question.  Any engineers, especially IE or ME types, who'd 
    be willing to talk to this kid about what their jobs actually
    involve?  *I* think he'd make a great engineer, his dad thinks he'd 
    make a great engineer, he's not so sure.  He has a vision of sitting
    in a cube "punching buttons all day, and never working with any people". 
    And he's a real people-person.  I know the stereotype isn't true,
    but it would mean more coming from someone who is really doing the
    work.

I'm not one of those hardware types (like an EE or whatnot) but being
an engineer doesn't preclude working with people.  Believe me, there
are days in here where it takes every ounce of good nature to keep
from throttling some folks 8^)....

By all means, tell him to pick something he will enjoy, but that will
also put him in a good position someday with potential for earning.
So many times I've said to myself "If I could do it all over again..."

Can't help you with schools though, sorry.

Next time you have an electrician or plumber come into your home to
do some repairs, check out the charges per hour.  Granted, a lot of
that may be overhead, but those two trades pretty much can command
their own prices.  Also, there's the added bonus of satisfaction for
a job well done which can be seen in a tangible way....

But, there's nothin' wrong with being an engineer either 8^)

If he's planning to go to school out of state, have him decide on the
school first. Then he should move there for his `year to work' and by
the time he is ready to start, he will be a resident and be able to pay
the lower tuition.

    Believe me, the kid knows that he should go full-time.  He's already
    got the job for next year - he's a historic interpreter out at Olde
    Sturbridge Village.  Those folks have done all the scare tactics
    necessary to convince him that working at a job he can get with
    just a high-school diploma doesn't lead to a real comfy life-style.
    And they aren't *real* high on going nights, either.  When everyone
    else you work with is at least 7 years older than you, and have
    all been to college, and your next move after high school is one
    of the primary topics of discussion for a couple of months, you
    get *lots* of advice - most of it pretty good.
    
    Actually, at this point I'm kinda pushing a January admittance,
    so he can get in the track season.  His track coach is soliciting
    (local) recruiting for him, based on progress to date.....

    I got a question I been meaning to axe for some time now:
    
    What in the HELL good is those stupid wiggling multicolor blobs
    on them weather radar maps?  I mean, these things look like a cross
    between a_amoeba and a particularly nasty hocker and they just sit
    there on the screen wiggling and all and them sometimes the weather
    main will point at it and apologize and warn you to not take it 
    serious cuz it's only ground fog!  I mean, c'mon!  Wanna tale me that
    a wriggling multicolor blob cain be looked at and somehwo interpolated
    to mean something.

    A related question to the previous one:
    
    When they show the weather charts with the moving clouds, they always
    show the motion of the clouds at least three times.  I always try to
    determine if it's the same motion or slightly different each time, but
    I never know for sure, and never know what it all means anyway.

    Actually those amoeba-like blobs do exist. We have one sitting right
    on top of us right now. It's basically cold and foggy gunk. It just
    goes to show you that no matter how sophisticated the weather people
    get, they still don't know what they are talking about. So the
    next time you see one just think of it as a slow moving gunk formation.

    Hawk, if you've got the hots for Susan Dey, my opinion of you has
    just dropped precipitously.  Dey is a wasted scag who looks like
    a hooker who has seen better days.  Talk about a bag o' bones!!!
    
    The decision on the fighter was total BS.  One thing I hate about
    LA Law is how they present evidence to get you thinking one way,
    and have decisions go the other.  Tommy made a great summation,
    totally tap-danced over the defendants lawyer.  There was no question
    that the promoter (who managed BOTH fighters) set up this guy to
    advance his other fighter's career.  WHen the decision came in the
    other way, I said to myself typical LA Law garbage, and reached for
    the clicker, but couldn't find it in time to prevent myself from
    seeing Victor jump Gracie's bones.  Gross!!!  You're telling me
    Victor can't score anyone he wants, and he settles for Grace?  Ugh.

    I can answer half the question, Lott was a first round pick in the 1981
    draft.  Don't know who was taken first overall.

    I'll have to look it up at home.  Lott's been around for a while
    because he played on the Niners Super Bowl team in 1981.  He wasn't the
    NFL's #1 pick that year, I do know that.

 I disagree.  Weather satellites (and communication satellites) are in
 geostationary orbit.  All you are seeing is time lapsed photography that
 is repeated 3 times.  
 
 There were originally two or three of these satellites (in geostationary
 orbit),  I think one was for the West and one was for the East (the other
 as backup?).  Over time they broke down so only one was left.  They had to
 somehow maneuver it so that it could be used for the whole continent.  The
 US weather service was worried because this was happening during the
 shuttle catastrophe and all the delays after that and they needed to get
 another satellite up their. (I think they were worried that they wouldn't
 get the info needed for an upcoming hurricane season [possiblility of
 'shrooms on this one] ).  If the satellite was not geostationary, that
 wouldn't have been an issue.

    Yeah, but the *best* storyline in last night's "LA Law" episode was
    Douglas, Jonathan, and Stuart out in the bush playing the "Skirmish"
    war game.
    
    Stuart was Rambo incarnate.   Great ambushes, superb shooting, and
    wonderful tactical use of surprise.  And then when Douglas "fragged"
    him, I was rolling.
    
    Lott was taken by the Niners in the 1981 draft.  He must have been a
    first-rounder because he was an obvious talent coming out of USC. 
    Also, the Niners had a high pick that year because they went 6-10 in
    the 1980 season.   So he went quickly, I'm sure.
    
    I'd also guess that George Rogers out of South Carolina (the other
    "USC") was the very first pick taken that year.   He was picked by the
    Saints and they went 1-15 in 1980 so they had the top pick in the 1981
    draft.  Rogers was the Heisman winner in 1980.

LA Law is pretty true to life, though.  I've seen that type of thing
happen time after time.  The key line to follow was the defense lawyer's
line about what would happen if they found for the plaintiff, about how
it would affect boxing (ie every time someone got knocked out there'd
be a law suit).

Now, assuming that you're (or I'm) of average intelligence, that means
that half the people in the world are dumber than you or I.  Now, 
assume that some, or a lot of those people are on a jury...  See how these
things can happen????

Quite a pisser, but quite true to life also....

Tommy's summation was exquisite!

Still think the English lawyer is the hottest babe on the show, although
I liked the girl who was helping Stuart out a while back (just before
he left Ann).

No way could they find for the plaintif in that case. The guy had 42 fights 
before the one that was in question. You can't blame brain damage a boxer 
suffers on just one fight. It's the accumulation of blows that causes it.

Stuart was having some crisis (I missed the earlier episodes due to

    Stuart had a heart attack during the Rosalind Shays sex discrimination
    lawsuit.  He recovered fine but Ann was treating him too delicately
    afterwards.   
    
    She was afraid to do "anything" that might stop his ticker again.   The
    low point was when Stuart was laying on the floor playing with his kid
    and she walked into the room and screamed assuming he was flatlined.  
    Shortly afterwards, Stuart said sayonara.
    
    Cindy and I have been diehard LA Law watchers since its very first
    season.  The show, like all others, is only as good as its writers.  So
    far they've kept the plots and stories fresh and interesting.  If they
    continue to do so, the show will continue to thrive.
    
    A couple of weeks back, Douglas was puttin' da moves on Vanna White and
    she wasn't exactly resisting him.   I may have missed an episode or
    two.   Is that still unresolved ???
    
    I  love watching Jonathan work.  A kick-ass lawyer with a heart.  A
    rare bird, for sure.   And the two new characters, the British girl and
    the psuedo-sleazebag, are fun to watch, too.   But it looks like Benny
    is getting less time.   Be a shame if his character faded away.

    Anyone know what is up with AIADM::BOSTON_CELTICS or

    The moderators of the Patriots' notesfile either know of the problem or
    have been informed.  One of them also happens to be the system manager
    for that machine so something will probably be done soon.  Noone has
    told me anything about AIADM going away.  Being one of the mods of the
    Pats conference, I'd probably be one of the first to know.

    Before the exit16W Nets moved to joisey, they played at the Nassau
    Coliseum.  What I wanna know is what was the name of the place they
    played in just prior to the Coliseum?

    Naw, it was the ISLAND GARDEN, in Commack, Lawn Guylind.  I think Al
    Albert used to do the Nets games. At one point they had about 3 guys
    with names sounding like Erving. (Dr J was with the Virginia Squires at
    that time. The nets had Irvin, Irvine, Gerwin, and Irwin. When they
    played the Squires or the San Antinio Spurs with Groerge Gervin,
    (before he was known as the Ice man), it could get confusing.

    Hempstead.  In scenic Commack, there was the Commack Arena, home
    of the L.I. Ducks hockey team.
    
    One of the announcers was also a Nassau Community College Phys.
    Ed teacher named Mike something or other.(circa 1969)  I'm pretty
    sure Albert came a little later.
    
    The Island Garden was absolutely the best place in the world to
    see a BBall game!!!  For about $8 (then) you could sit in the 1st
    or second rows, center court.

CAM is a cluster.  CAMONE is an 8800, not sure what CAMTWO is, but

I've had our system manager bump up our number of links, because
that was a problem, but the main reason for slowness, as I said when
we moved here, is that we're a bit off the main line.  We come through
Springfield and then down.

Also, late last week our high speed data line went down, and is 
soon to be repaired, so we've been have much slower net access.

So, I hope that explains it.  At least we still have SPORTS...8^)

        We were given our notice today (last Wednesday) and had to sign for 
        the four pages of paper summarizing the closing of the PNO facility.  
        This is required by the WARN law, enacted last year.
        
        The Plant will close on 29 March 1991.
        
        Excluded organizations from the closing process - they are
        expected to begin working at the Tempe facility on or before 1
        April 1991, these organizations are -
        
                . Financial Management Center.
                . Corporate In-House Educational Services.
                . Customer Services.
                . Customer Account Management.
                . Competitive Sales Team.
        
        All other employees must have elected to terminate service with
        Digital or have accepted a job elsewhere within Digital by 29
        March 1991.
        
        A financial package will be made available to all regular
        employees that will be terminated.
        
        Employees of businesses that are transferring locally have ten
        working days from 21 January, 1991, to decide if they will
        transfer or elect to leave Digital.  If they elect to leave,
        their jobs will be posted in the Phoenix facility and all
        eligible candidates may apply.
        
        Employees that find jobs elsewhere within Digital will have their
        relocation paid for out of Phoenix.
        
        All employees, regardless of whether they are currently active
        or not, e.g. Leaves of Absence or disability, are affected by the
        closing and subject to the same rules and processes.
        
        Employees cannot leave Digital until after the business transfer
        date set for their organization.  This date will be communicated
        on 18 January, 1991.
        
        Eligibility for re-employment (I assume this to mean either as a
        contract worker or full time) prior to the end of the period

                        months after their termination.
        
        In addition to the above, a Career center will be opened in the
        east lobby on Thursday, manned by Digital personnel and companies

        It is the intention of the company to market the Phoenix
        facility, either through a direct sale or a lease-option plan.
        
        Ironically, one of the plants that we are transistioning
        businesses too, has refused to pick up product because - "We
        don't have the space."
        
        Another curious thing was that at no time did I hear any manager
        admit that this was or say the word - "Layoff."

    Sorry to here about Phoenix mis fortune.  Im an employee in Mass and
    have no idea what to expect and when.  From what I understand if they
    give you a package and say go home (in other words you didnt chose it
    then its considered a layoff) does anyone have the exact meaning of
    what is s layoff...Sounds like there trying to keep there no Layoff
    policy and tell people they no longer have a job....Everyone always
    said to me..Wow you work at dec your set for life, funny it doesnt
    feel that way.  Is there a notes file that people update rumors fact
    and fiction about dec's future in.  Thanks in advance.

    Nah, DEC's not doing "layoffs".   We're doing "involuntary severances"
    or some such other euphemism.   I think I've heard "rightsizing" just a
    few too many times, too.
    
    The biggest difference I can see between this package and the last one
    is that this is truly involuntary.  That is, if you're picked, you're
    gone.   Of course, adding this to the equation means that you'll be
    eligible for unemployment compensation whenever your severance package
    runs out.    The original packages were voluntary and you had no such
    cushion underneath you.

    Mike (and any one else who cares),
       Here in WFO they've decided that they need to cut the plant
    population by 200-250. They've listed all the job codes, the
    present number and the number that they'll keep. As an example,
    there's 20 people in your job code. They want to get down to
    10, but they'll take 12 volunteers. If they only get say, 5
    volunteers, they still need to "lose" 5 more people. How
    they decide which 5 it will be hasn't quite been decided yet (due
    this week), but it looks like last 2 reviews, then seniority,
    then mumble mumble.
       Whether you volunteer or get laid off, you get a financial 
    package. Probably the only reason you haven't heard anything
    is that your plant hasn't decided on who and how many yet.

From a media/individual perspective... it's a Layoff.

From a legal point of view, use of the word `layoff' implies a recall
to work should those types of jobs be needed ANYTIME in the future.

For legal puposes, Digital is undergoing a RIF (Reduction In Force),
which carries no implications of re-hire (although it doesn't preclude
it).

Nevertheless, Digital will never again be able to make the `no layoffs'
claim.

    Unemployment....I have 4 aunts and 2 uncles and a cousin that all
    worked for the same company.  The company closed its massachusetts
    plant, people were offered to more to South Carolina where they
    were opening there new plant or get a very extensive severence package.
    They all went to unemployment to see if they could collect.  Regardless
    of the severence package of any size they were all able to collect due
    to there job being taken away, they did not volunteer.  I have talked
    with some peopel (no one from the unemployment office yet) but from
    what Ive heard if they say sorry your gone and hand you a check
    regardless of the size if you dont find a job you are immediatly
    intiled to unemployment.  This of course is just what Ive heard and
    like I said I have not talked to anyone at unemployment this info came
    from several people that went thru this from another company and they
    got unemployment.  I dont know if there is a difference in how digital
    is doing this, maybe the company where my family all worked never
    informed this state of the severnce package, I dont know but they all
    collected.  Be real curious if anyone gets some offical answers to
    this.  Thanks.  But if this is true you may not want to volunteer.

        I few people that I work, who been notified that their job
    is "disappearing" have called the unemployment office and explained
    their situation. They all got different answers. They can collect
    no matter what. They can collect only if they are involuntary. They
    have to wait until the number of weeks that they received in the
    severance package runs out, etc.
        But what else would you expect from a state run agency.

Actually the tie breaker is the last four numbers of the social security
number. This represents a `random' choice. Like flipping a coin  (but
it's documentable). The last four numbers don't `represent' anything,
and have no bearing on time in the work force (any more than the last
four numbers of your phone number represent anything about you).

    As I said in my intro note, I survived "Phase II" transition and found
    a new job.  When I was going through it, however, personnel was very
    careful to tell me that if I left the company, it was not voluntary,
    and that my job was eliminated.  They never came out and said that you
    would be eligable, but they certainly implied it.  As somebody said,
    however, the Ma unemployment people give a different answer every time
    you call.
    
    Good luck to anyone trying to find a job, it's very competitive within
    the company, but if you work hard at it, you can persevere.

FWIW, I'm not 100% positive that they're not frozen, but there
are some jobs (software engineering jobs) in my group here.

    I don't mean to antagonize the moderators, but I am sick of reading the
    same notes twice.  This is invariably caused by the moderators who are
    moving around notes very freely (usually from topic X into the Junk
    Notes), messing up everyone's unseen map.  Assuming a reader read 'em
    once in Topic X and an hour later the moderator moves 'em, then the
    reader must suffer through them again in junk notes.  I usually check
    out the last note (.l) in that case, and often I haven't read it, so I
    go back.  It's a somewhat time-consuming waste of time.
    
    I think too many notes are being shifted around, and if it has to be
    done, I wish it would wait for a quiet time in the file, such as before
    and/or after working hours.

I was going to take this up with the moderators off-line just now but will
address some of it here.  Actually, notes are marked UNSEEN by UID, not NOTE
ID, so you should never see the same note twice with NEXT UNSEEN.  

Problem is most of us go through the conference with the ENTER key (the
do-the-right-thing key).  That brings us to a new note in, say, "Junk Notes"
and ENTER will start paging through replies sequentially, not by unseen.

Anyway, your point is a good one and I'll be appealing to the moderators to
ease up on the movement.  I also think noters should now realize the purpose of
the Junk Note, etc. and use them correctly.

I still think any note which is an obvious rathole-generator or is just
inappropriate should be moved by the moderator, sort of like a public flogging. 
But that should be reserved for egregious abuses.

    Hopefully, by setting up appropriate topics and moving stuff around,
    noters will get the hint and start put stuff in the right place.
    
    Moving them around as we catch them will help the people who don't
    access the conference that frequently (although as Dan mentioned, it
    can cause a problem with those of you who are in here every 5 minutes).
    
    As far as only moving them around a couple of times I day, I see the
    following problems.  Moderators would have to make a note of the out of
    place notes for future reference and go back later and find them again
    in order to move them.  Once a note gets off track, by the time they
    are moved there will be alot more to move.  Also, if you think I'm
    going to be in here at 7pm moving notes around, you're nuts.

    I don't know quite were to put this, so how about here?
    
    This may be old hat to some of you, but I found this neeto-keen COM
    file that compresses your notebook file.  I ran it and it cut mine
    down by about two thirds.  I'll put it in the next reply, so those not
    interested can do a "next unseen".

    I am planning a combo romantical/ski vacation with the ball and chain
    in the mid-March timeframe. We kinda figgered on travelling out to
    Western area for about one week. The areas we have considered are
    in no particular order; Colorado(nothing in particular,have considered
    Vail,Steamboat,Aspen etc.), Utah (Park City,Snowbird) or Lake Tahoe.
    
    Can anyone instruct me on the following?
    
    A. Weather/snow conditions for mid-March(generally)
    B  Recommended ski areas from your past experiences(anything 
       with half decent night life is ok)
    
    Don't consider the price factor,we've got all them brochures,etc.
    We've heard nothing but the best about Western skiing,so we're
    looking forward to it. We skied at Whistler/Blackcomb in B.C.,
    Canada a couple of years ago so we've had a little experience
    out West, but not in the States.  Any little bit of info will

    March in Colorado is to-die-for.  The snow is great, the days are
    sunny and warm (take lots of sun *block* - reapply *every time you
    get on a lift*) - in short, it's wonderful.
    
    It may be too late to get reservations for this year :-(.  March
    is spring vacation time for most of the mid-West, and it is the
    absolutely best conditions of the year.  Preparing for March in
    Colorado is the only reason to ski the rest of the year :-).  I
    say Breck 'cause it has the most nightlife in Summit County, but
    be sure to ski the other mountains, too (Keystone, Copper and
    Arapahoe.)

    Tank is someone who pretends to be a sports reporter on WBCN radio in
    Boston.  WBCN was the counterculture station in Boston for a long time
    (I don't know if it is or not, I don't listen to it).

    'FNX is fine if you live inside of 128 (puny transmitter).  Last time I
    checked, NH was north of Boston, not West. ;^}

    Hawk, knowing you only through noting, this statement didn't surprise
    me at all.  I tend to also listen (music), view (art), and read
    (literature) that which is on the edge.  If it's not disturbing, it
    doesn't make you think, and if you don't think, it's not worth it.

    That's my view exactly! I *USEDTA* listen to BCN in the early 80s,when
    they really WERE the cutting edge, but I noticed they would intersperse
    "new wave" (as it was called way back then) songs with tired, "safe"
    songs, (Stones, Doors, Led Zepplin, and always the same ones).
    Around '82 I started listening to WLYN, which later became FNX. I 
    occasionallly check in on BCN, but it isn't really worth the effort, 
    since their format is increasingly "all things to all people" ie Classic
    rock, heavy metal, "new" music, new releases by old has-been bands that you
    didn't know were still around (Foghat), etc. 
    
    I've encountered Tank in public, and let it suffice to say that he is
    even more of an idiot in person than he appears to be on th air...

    I get FNX in just about everywhere I go, but I don't go out to
    Worcester, so I can't make any claims.  I switched over from BCN to FNX
    about 5 years ago, and haven't looked back.  I listen to MDK as well,
    glenn, though they get a little wimpy sometimes.  It's a nice mix.

    No metal, no rap crap, no Country and western. Very few ads...
    
    We listen to them what we want to hear real music that the local

    Well I admit it to.  The ride home from work is usually punctuated by
    lots of dial hopping.  I listen to WFAN when it's coming in, and if not
    I'll switch between 680 and 850.  If they're really poor (commentary,
    not reception), it's back to the FM dial.

    Clark Station:  WCUW I think it's around 96 on the FM dial.  I wouldn't
    call it classical.  I'd call it eclectic.

Well, now that you've mentioned AM Talk radio, there is a show which 
I think is  nationally syndicated but is on WTIC-AM 1080 down here.

The format is like the DearAbby/Psychologist guy and people call in
and tell him there problems.  A lot of times if I'm coming home late
from some place, and I'm all metaled out and don't feel like listening
to Top40/Rap, I'll bop over to AM and listen....

It can be pretty interesting to hear this guy give common sense solutions
to people with problems.

I think the biggest shortage we have now in the USA isn't oil, but good
old fashioned common sense....

    That's cause I keep most of it.  I plan to bring it out in a few years,

    If I lived where you are Frank, I'd definitely listen to Imus in the
    Morning.  That show's almost always hilarious when I hear it...
    The bit he did when Mike Schmidt announced his retirement killed me.
    
    If you remember, Schmidt *really* broke down when he announced he was
    hanging up the spike, and everyone played that on the news.  Schmidt
    kept on trying to pick up his prepared statement again, but would get
    less and less off before the sobs before he broke off the statement.
    
    Imus took that, added some extra sobs at the end, and then every 15
    minutes or so, he's say, "Okay, Mike, do you wanna try it again" and
    play some more of the tape.  His commentary was really funny.

    When I was in the Virgin Islands last year, there was no TV because
    they were still recovering from Hugo.  I was forced to listen to radio
    to get any of the precious NCAA tourny scores.  There were few radio
    stations and the island was so small, some of the dialogue went like

	Actually, I would listen to Imus, except that I'm pretty
	hung up on Smith and Barber on 99-Rock WPLR.

	These guys are too funny, and used to be on WPLR before I 
	went to France in 88.  Went to France, came back and they
	were gone.  They had these guys Laser and Reed.

	Laser was white and Jewish, Reed was black, and the two
	of them were pretty hysterical, always playing up the
	black white thing, and doing a lot of comedy.  However,
	they weren't as funny as Smith and Barber..

	Last May, Smith and Barber returned from Florida.   You
	ought to hear them rude on Floridians now....too funny.

    Hawk's got half of it.  The other half is the electrical interference
    brought on by population density.  You may have noticed a lot less of
    just plain old settlement down south, and I wouldn't be surprised if
    you've got a lot less AM (and FM, and TV broadcast) stations available
    during the day.  The crowdidness of the dial in the Northeast plays a
    major role.  In the Boston area, we've got a major station at 680. 
    It's a wierd fact that the skipping and drifting of stations (and I'm
    sure someone knows this a lot better than me) means that 660 and 700
    will pull in 680 much, much better than 670 and 690.  Likewise for 640,
    720 and 650, 710.  The proximity of WRKO, 680, interferes with a
    radio's ability to tune into WFAN 660.  Most unfortunate, as that means
    I have to endure the Boston sycophants during drive time instead of
    Mike and the Mad Dog!

    there's this Big negative hole and it closely resembles this really big
    sphinkter.  At night is opens up, and inhales all!
    
    Natcherally, that weakens the signal in the Peoples Republic and

    Just goes to show ya that if the armpit of the US is up in New England,

    The best conference to access for general NBA news is
    AIADM::BOSTON_CELTICS.  There is some discussion of each team in there
    including the Bulls.
    
    There is a note in here discussing Jordan and the Bulls.  I don't
    remember the number but if you do a DIR 1-103 you'll find it.  Then at
    the prompt enter the number, the note will come up and then you can
    reply to it.
    
    There is only one other person that gets involved in Bulls/Jordan
    discussion regularly so you may be disappointed to find you talking to

Clearly, this is a guess, but.....


I'd hazard a guess that in the early days of higher education,
it was an all male bastion, except for a few all-women schools.

Somewhere along the line, when things got mixed, those few women
who were breaking through, were termed co-eds....

    A very outdated expression, perhaps OK back in the days when June had
    milk and cookies waiting for Wally and Theodore after school, and a pot 
    roast ready to come out of the oven by the time Ward came home from work, 
    but to use "Co-ed" for a female college student in 1991 is akin to 
    referring to an African-American as "Negro" or "Colored".
                    

I don't think it's denigrating. The language evolves. Co-ed now means a
female student. There's nothing condescending about it.

In hoops a board is a rebound. Usage has made it common. The fact that
there are glass backboards instead of board backboards doesn't mean 
                    ^^^^^^
everybody has to start saying a center pulled down 18 glasses. The
language evolves, and in the context of basketball, board has become
`rebound'.

Well, my guess is it would depend on the sport and the level.  You'd probably
want to contact.  For instance, if you want to get the coach of the New York
Fashion Institute's belly dancing team, you'd probably want to start by calling
the New York Fashion Institute.

    handle speaking engagements for many coaches, players, etc.
    
    At the H.S. and College level, I'd suggest you contact the AD.  Or even

    Last home game for Knicks and Nets are March 20.  Both on the road on
    March 22 and 23, Nets on the road March 25 and home March 26.  Knicks
    on the road March 26, return home March 28.  Also don't think the NCAAs

    The editor screws with the keypad.  Hit a CTRL-W to put the keypad back
    into application mode.

And after you notice that Dan's technical solution doesn't work, you'll want to 
hit the PF4 key to put the keypad back into application mode (or if it's a VT,
use SETUP to do so.  On a workstation, the incantation is more complicated). 
The easiest way of all is to set up your profile so you use a callable editor
and then REPLY/EXTRACT will put the text of the note in your reply and the
keypad will be unaffected.

    We have some close friends who have two children on ridylin. It helps
    to calm hyperactiveness and allows them to focus more on things. It is
    a serious drug that needs to be administered properly and monitored
    closely.

    A couple of years ago in Mass., a young teenager beat one of his peers

If anyone is curious as to why it pops up in here in casual and
joking conversation, it can probably be attributed to the Wayne's
World skit on SNL, which IMO is one of the best skits on the show.

Wayne will be talking, and Garth will get all excited about something
and start going a mile a minute about it.  Wayne will look at him
and go "Whoa, dude, take a ridalyn"....

From this, it has crossed over into the vernacular.  Right now it's
pretty popular on the team...when one of us gets excited about something,
next thing you know someone says "Whoa, dude, take a ridalyn"....

That drug that Kwak and Jake are using to try and grow hair is
called Riopan Plus....


As to joking about ridalyn, nothing is sacred in sports.  I think we've
proven that time and time again.....

    Read this in the paper a few years ago.
    
    There was a hair place in Pittsburgh a few years back that wove
    synthetic hair into your scalp.  Stuff looked great and no bother with
    rugs falling(or getting pulled)off.
    
    That is until it was about 3 years old.  The stuff started matting
    together, falling out, and generating scalp infections.  Seems this
    place did a few thousand "hair implants" and about the time the third
    guy came back with problems, they promptly closed up shop and headed
    for the coast.
    
    The guys who had this stuff implanted ended up haveing to have the
    stuff surgically removed and ended up with scars and pain and a
    sh_tload of other problems and nobody to sue.
    
    Me, I could care less about the fact that I got a Class "A" good
    housekeeping approved SOLAR PANEL on the top of my haid.  I started
    losing the hair when I was 19 and I'm sort of used to it by now.
    
    Me and the Mrs. have come up with some interesting uses for the "solar
    panel" but if I detail them, I'll see the set hidden speed record that

In my family, the trend is not towards becoming solar efficient, rather
it's towards getting gray early.  Mind you, it's not a complete graying,
but rather the odd one or two here or there.   My dad was like in his
late 40s by the time he really started getting gray....

RE:, Ridalin

As stated previously, it's a drug for kids, designed to keep
Hyperactivity (or hyperactive behavior) under control. Calms `em down.
What a lot of people don't know is that many drugs react the opposite in
children as they do in adults. Ridalin is one of these, and giving it to
an adult would be like giving him uppers... really get him hyper. So
telling an adult to take a Ridalin when they're already hyper would be
the opposite of telling an adult who is really lethargic and bummed out
to take some `luudes and downers.

    Can someone please post Green Bay Packers' schedule?  In particlar, I

    BTW, recently they've been playing 1/2 of their home games in Milwaukee.

A pick an roll is the following:

Player A stands in the way of the person guarding his/her teammate, Player B 
(this is the pick part).  After Player B dribbles past the pick, the person 
guarding Player A usually switches to guard Player B, often creating a 
"mismatch" in size.  At this point, Player A "rolls" past the player who 
originally guarded Player B, but was now guarding him, and heads for the basket.
Seeing this, Player B passes the ball to Player A, who should have a reasonably
easy shot.

	Insert a digit into a nostril.  Your choice on left hand, right
		hand, and which nostril.  NOTE:  Do NOT use the Thumb.
		Thumb picks are for professionals only!  Do NOT use the

		the other, cleaning the septal area).  Again, this is for
		professionals only.

	Work the digit (preferably the index finger) around in the chosen
		nostril.  Dig it deep, eroding dried mucus substances from
		the cilia in the nostril.  DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PUSH THE DIGIT
		INTO THE SINUS AREA -- Emergency Medical attention will be
		needed if you do this, plus your eyes will water.

	Remove the digit and dried mucus substances from the nostril.

	IF the dried mucus substance still has a high moisture content
		and a relatively high viscousity, then roll it between 
		thumb and forefinger into a neat little camoflage colored

Here's a question that has nothing whatsoever to do with SPORTS.
However, I know that this conference has a lot of brainpower, so I'll ask it
here anyway.

Last night I watched "David L. Wolper Presents" on A&E Channel.  It was
about the N�rnberg War Crimes Trial.

Afterwards I got into this big discussion over the sentencing of the 
war criminals.  The point that came up was corncerning Admiral Raeder,
the man behind Germany's U-boat campaign.  He was sentenced to life
in prison.  I know he did circa 1960, but the question that came up in
the discussion was did he serve his complete term, or was his sentence
commuted later in his life....

If any of you history buffs out there know, a few of my friends and I
would be pleased to know the answer...

    To my knowledge, every person sentenced at Nuremburg served their full
    sentence. If he was given life, I'm pretty sure that's where he died.
    
    The issue that was brought to light during the latter years of Rudolph
    Hess' life was that the 4 Allies had to agree to a commutation and the
    USSR felt no pity for any person convicted at Nuremburg.

 I didn't know the facts about Raeder specifically so I didn't volunteer an
 unfounded hunch.   
 
 But, with that said, I can't imagine that the worldwide Jewish community
 would have ever consented to any kind of a parole for any of the Nazis
 whatsoever, including Raeder.
 
 Also, the fact that we can't recall if Raeder was actually released most
 likely confirms the theory that he wasn't.   That would have been the kind
 of event historians would have recorded.

I recognize Raeder's name because I've always been interested in submarines
and sub tactics (probably cause that's where my Dad served in World War II).

Anyway, I know that Raeder is credited with the tactics of the U-Boat forces,
which is material that's studied by submariners...  I hadn't known he
was even in the War Crimes trial....

    Christmas.
    
    	You said that your dad served on a Sub, well did he receive any
    medals?  Does he have any old pictures of him and his crew?  My Dad
    was a P-47 fighter pilot in the European theater and we took his 
    wings and medals along with some other stuff and had them put into
    frames.  It looked really nice and my Dad really liked it.  So, it
    might be to late to do that type of thing now, but it would make a
    nice birthday or Christmas present.  At least it beats another tie or

    Back to Nuremburg for a minute....'Saw got me thinking.
    
    Albert Speer is the only Nazi who was released from Spandau that rings
    a bell. I do wonder why Raeder was committed of war crimes. Raeder was
    strictly Kriegsmarine - not a Nazi, at least from my readings. Admiral
    Canaris was the chief of foreign espionage but died, I believe, before
    the war.
    
    Two other figures who were sentenced to death at Nuremburg pose some
    questions. General Jodl was Hitlers Chief of Staff but, to my
    recollection, was not a decision maker. His role was a liason to the
    Wehrmact. Also, Admiral Doenitz claim to fame was that he was named
    Fuhrer after Hitler commited suicide. Yet both these guys were hanged
    while Speer received a long sentence. 
    
    Oh, well, water under the damn, so to speak.

    Some of the Nuremberg criminals *did* have their sentences shortened.
    Karl Doenitz (sp) comes to mind, and I believe Albert Speer.
    
    My best advice is a good bookstore or library, and look for a book
    published after 1970. With the exception of Hess, most of the
    commutations/clemency took place in the 50's and early-mid 60's.

It's a whole issue of indivigual and collective morals.  I once read a book 
about the Mai Lai massacre, written by a sociologist.  He contended that each
of the men involved, if they acted indivigually, would not have done what they 
did, and that it was a combination of others doing it and the situation that 
made them believe at the time that it was correct.

I sometimes wonder how I would have reacted had I lived in Germany in the 1940s, 
as either a regular civilian or as a Jew.  I like to think I would have the 
perspective to get out, but I'm not so sure I could have seen things that 
clearly.

As for my dad, I did the military thing last year.  I had a Navy ballcap
custom made for him, with the name of his sub and it's number on it.
My brother ordered the history of his sub (came on parchment paper and
we framed it)...

As a former firefighter and former fireworks user, I'm very cautious.  

I came very close to losing an eye one time (like close enough that it burned
the side of my head as it whizzed by).  I was a safe distance away, and
this little rocket thingie decided to go all screwy.  I was damn lucky.


So, like Hawk, when the fireworks start, if I'm not IN the house, I'm
close enough to something I can duck behind.....

The reason your node name comes up wrong, Alison, is because the network
database on CAM is WAY out of date.  You can tell when your local network
database has been updated by taking a look at the node numbered 2.9.  This is a
placeholder which holds the date of the database.  On CAM:

    the boxing and pay per view notes and now am trying here:
    
    I'm looking for a bar in the Westboro/Marlboro/Framingham area that
    will be showing the Tyson fight tonight on big screen TV.  I'm told
    there's a really good sports bar in Framingham, mentioned in many
    sports notes conferences, that would most likely be showing it, but
    nobody remembers the name and I can't find the topic here.
    
    Does anyone here know the name of the bar or some other bar that would

    I don't think bars can *legally* show the fight, can they?  I've heard
    that the cable addressing scheme (or some other satellite/video
    technoweenie thing) has been improved, too, to prevent the plethora of
    bars that have habitually ripped the feed off from doing so anymore.
    
    Another option is to go to a racetrack (Wonderland is showing the
    fight) and watch the fight for free.  Admission is a couple of dollars.  
    I assume that the racetracks cut special deals with the promoters for 
    this privilege...

    the fee.  That way you get to watch in the comfort of your own home.
    
    We usually have about 6 of us who regularly watch to fights and rotate
    between homes for a given fight.  We'll play a few games of poker,

    I used to go to the Stadium Club for Jets games.  There was a big fight
    about Halloween time and their deal was something like $8 in advance
    and $10 at the door for a party which includes the fight.  If you
    charge admission (and kick back a fee, I'm sure) it makes it legal to
    show it at the bar.  It's right in downtown Framingham.

    recorded something the other night and it sounds absolutely terrible
    now...much worse than before.
    
    Any suggestions on how I can fix this problem myself before taking it

You might fiddle and diddle with the tracking.

Then again, it might just be a symptom of it getting old (if it is so).

There's always a little of that "flutter" in mine, but if I fool with the
tracking I minimize it.  My VCR (my oldest one) is 6 years old.

    Dan'l, I had a similar problem, and found that my VCR has volume
    controls for recording each channel.  I had them turned down without
    realizing that they affect both recording and playback.  Also affect
    the volume while just using it as a channel selector.
    
    If you've got them, try turning them up.

    If you have your speakers plugged into the VCR it causes muffled
    recordings.  I also had the problem.  Just unplug your speaker wire
    from the VCR when recording, maybe that will do the trick.  Best of

    I had the same muffled problem with taped stuff.  Don't know what kind
    of setup you have, but my cable goes through the cable company
    provided box, then through the VCR, then into the TV.  The box has a
    remote which controls the volume.  Tune that sucker way up.  If you're
    watching something at the same time, just control the volume in the
    room with the volume control on the TV.  It worked for me.

 Congratulations on your new dish.   
 
 You'll be able to find all kinds of football games up there.   For
 the NFL, there are a collection of transponders that CBS uses for the
 NFC games.   Normally, they're scrambled and you can't get them but
 on Sundays they automagically open up and you have all the NFL NFC
 games you can handle.   They're on the T1 and/or T2 birds.    This
 was the hot issue last year when the NFL threatened to scramble these
 feeds so that sports bars (and you and me) couldn't get them anymore.
 
 The AFC is on NBC and most of their transponders are over on the Ku
 band which I don't have so I can't help you there.
 
 It's a lot crazier for college football.   The games could be up
 there anywhere at all.   Depends on the broadcaster.  If it's a
 regional broadcaster (like Jeff-Pilot for the ACC), then you need to
 just scan the skies looking for wherever they were able to rent three
 hours or so of air time.   If it's a local school-specific
 broadcaster, then same thing.   Start at the easternmost bird, scan
 all the transponders, and then start moving west one bird at a time.  
 Or start west and move east.

    Since NBC broadcasts AFC games, and their on Ku band, you'll find them
    on K1 and K2, predominantly K2.  Ensure that your dish is lined up
    PERFECTLY, because Ku band is MUCH more precise than C band and if it's
    lined up wrong, you'll just plain miss the bird.
    
    With my dish, I actually have it better than the folks in San Diego,
    because I watch ALL Charger games regardless of where they play.  Since
    it's rarely a sellout, the blackout isn't lifted in SD.  Hell, I don't
    care, cause I pick it up anyway.  A dish is GREAT for football!

Look for the games in the following places:

Buffalo - In Buffalo or wherever they're playing if away.
Detroit - In Detroit or wherever they're playing if away.
Oklahoma State - In Oklahoma  or wherever they're playing if away.
BIG8 teams - depends on the team.

    Hawk, I don't think you have to go through one of the ticket agencies. 
    You can probably get them via mail directly from the stadium box office
    with a simple phone call.  That might be a tough game to get tix to
    though, what with all of the Giant fans around who can't get into the
    Meadowlands.

    Since the Pats' Answerman (JHendry) is on vacation the next best thing
    to do is call 800-543-1776 for ticket information.

       Sections 117-122, 217-222, 317-322. All these are on the Pats side
    and between the 20's (I think). I'm in 222, I think /Don and Chap are
    103. They're on the 'enemy' side. But they cain see the cheerleaders up
    close (front row!).

can keep an eye out for it down here.....  The South End of Hartford
it like Italian central around here, and quite a few of the guys on the
team are very familiar with all the little shops and stuff.  If I know
what it is, I can ask....

    Crispelli, like a pizza, can only be bought fresh, and consumed right
    after purchase, to be any good.  In fact, I've never heard of any kind
    of frozen variety.
    
    It is simply like a small lump of fried dough, except it is heartier
    and chewier and crispier than the county-fair variety fried dough.  It
    doesn't cook up hollow like your regular fried dough either.  The
    secret must be in the dough, but also in the cooking.  The best ones
    are cooked in two stages in vats of grease of two different
    temperatures.  This gives them their great texture.  The dough is
    wadded around an anchovie, or a dab of riccotta cheese before cooking.
    You can get 'em plain, too.
    
    The only place I know that sells 'em is a place on, I believe, Common
    Street in Lawrence (MA) across from the Tripoli Bakery.  This section
    was/is the Italian section of town (you could get *real* Italian Ice
    there too), but now seems mostly Spanish with a few Italian shops still
    hanging on.  I grew up with some friends from that section of town, and
    I tell ya, those black-garbed, baggy-nyloned, overweight,
    grey-hair-wrapped-in-a-bun grandmothers could cook that home-made
    pasta!

Wow.  I'll bet you can get it at Aiello's Kitchen.

Aiello's Kitchen on Wethersfield Ave in Hartford is just a few block from
Colt Park.  It's this little hole in the wall that's open for breakfast
and lunch.  I've never been there, but one of the Italian guys on the
team SWEARS by it.

They've got the little old Italian ladies cooking on two restaurant
stoves.  They have all kinds of entrees and stuff, and you have to take
your food out the front door, through the tile shop next door into
the dining area.  Joey says it's just good old fashioned home cooked
italian.  I'm heading down there for lunch one of these Fridays....

When I go, I'll see if they have Crispelli.  If they do, Dickstah, we'll
just have to have a get-together....  (ie you might have to come down
to a rugby game and drink up, and then an italian night on the town in
the South End....)

Hartford has some very interesting sections.  The Italian section in 
the South End, espeically Franklin Avenue, has an Italian Festival
every year, and the Italian restaurants in that area are superb.

There's a section called Frog Hollow, but I'm not sure if it's because
French folks lived there at one point or what.  

The area around the Mark Twain house used to be a center of culture, with
many famous folks homes there.  (One was the home of William Gillette, the
actor, who lived there before building his "castle" on the Connecticut
River).  Unfortunately, all but the Mark Twain House and Harriet Beecher
Stowe House were torn down to develop the area, and most notably put
in Hartford Public High School.....8^(

    was a small place - sat about 20 at best.
    
    Interestingly, in Santa Barbara, CA I found a zillion great Italian 
    restaurants - totally unexpected.   Also a simply super Mexican
    restaurant outside of Santa Maria, but that's a different story.
    
    The bested Italian food, however, is in Little Italy in NYC.  Awesome.
    Simply Awesome.  Makes the North End look like McDonalds.

I never ate there, and haven't been down that end of the city in a while,
so I'm not sure if it's still there.  One thing that ain't there any more

    Actually, the Philly section is pretty damn good.  THe same girl from
    Harfud moved to PHilly, and I followed (ah, young, foolish, and in
    heat...) her to visit many times.   Providence has some great ones - 
    never been to the Baltimore section.
    
    Seattle has a few - but the sauce is lacking in something.  I make much
    better sauce (in fack, I make a damn good sauce!)

    The end zone seats behind the goal posts are better than the endzone
    seats along the 50-yard line because they're cheaper, but you can't see
    as much.  Nobody is going to the Giant's game anyway because it will be
    too crowded.  You should really go to some other exhibition game and
    pay for the cheap seats and move to the good ones because for those
    games people usually stay away in droves.

Every big city should have an italian section.  Not to cast aspersions, 
but I hear people rave about French cooking.  Well, when I was in France
I wasn't impressed.

But Italian cooking (and German) are probably two of my absolute favorites.

I'm fortunate in that I know an authentic German restaurant in New Britain
Conn., and we have the South End of Hartford...


Next time  you're up this way Bobmeister, we should have a Sports
GetTogether/DeanBashStrategySession at a fine Italian restaurant.....

    to change the name.  Well, in Santa Barbara, they still have a Sambo -
    and supposedly, it is the original Sambos.  I went in there  - Same as

    The only Italian place around my parts that I enjoy enough to go to
    semi-regularly is Mario's In Lexington Ma.  Very small place, sits
    around 20-25 and yes the yuppies have take over.  Sometimes it takes
    about 45-60 mins.  The food isnt the greatest but its serverly
    reasonable and best of all you can bring in your own alcoholic
    beverages.  I dont know about the rest of you, but sometimes the bar
    tab is greater than the food bill ?????  Grab a bottle on the way or
    a case of beer (whatever you prefer).  4 people can eat a great big
    meal with extras for about $30, then figure in a case of beer so the
    most you end up with is about $50 for a great meal (4 people).

    Dickstah, you might want to check out some of the places on Shrewsbury
    St. in Worcester.  There is an Italian Grocery called D'Errico's that
    might have it.  There are several Italian restaurants on that street,
    but I've never seen Crisponelli on the menus.
    
    Good Italian restaurants were few and far between in Texas, but then
    again it's very tough to find good Mexican back here in Mass.

    
    I've been through that way a few times, Mac, when D'Errico's has
    chicken on sale for $ .39 a pound.  I miss Argento's a lot.  The thing
    is, Crispelli is more like a snack food or junk food as opposed to a
    "meal."  And it always has to be made to order.  That's probably I've
    never heard of it in restaurants.

"All the Right Moves" is about a high school football star in
Northwestern Pennsylvania who's trying to get out of that area on a
football scholarship. It stars Tom Cruise. His adversarial coach is Craig
T. Nelson (of the TV show "Coach" fame) and his girlfriend is Lea
Thompson. She and Cruise have a "scene".

 Ally Sheedy most definitely played Matthew Broderick's sidekick in
 "War Games".   No question about it.   Great flick.   Score yourself

 My favorite pair of characters in "War Games" were the two computer
 technogeeks who instructed Broderick about "back doors" into
 sensitive computer systems.   One was the skinny pencil-necked geek
 with the Coke bottle glasses and the other was the heavyset slobbo
 who was wolfing a Big Mac and yelling at the skinny one at the same
 time.   Whatta riot !!!
 
 And Lea Thompson did indeed display her most impressive titles in the
 Tom Cruise flick "All The Right Moves".   Whew !!!

You can see both of them in other movies. The older, bigger guy (name not
known) plays the main heavies chasing Danny Devito for a loan not payed
in "Twins". He and his brother finally catch up with Danny and Arnold in
a bar after one of the brothers had been beat up by Arnold and both had
been shot in the foot.

The littler, very geeky, plays a great  role in 1941 the Speilberg movie
with Belushi, Akroyd and a cast of thousands. He and his talking dummy
are on the ferris wheel looking out for the Jap sub.

Pick up the movie Space Camp.  A sappy movie starring Kate Capshaw (who
has mighty nice titles herself) about a bunch of space camp kids who

 "The Sure Thing" was on FOX lasted night.   One of my all-time
 favorite films.   I became a total lifelong John Cusack fan the night
 I first saw it several years ago.   I will watch and enjoy any and
 all films that young man does ... "Sixteen Candles", "Say Anything",
 matters not ...
 
 To show you how much I like "The Sure Thing", I watched it *TWICE*
 lasted night.   With a satellite dish, you get both the East and West
 feeds.  I watched it on FOX East on 8:00pm and again on FOX West at
 11:00pm.   I think I laughed harder the second time around.
 
 Favorite scenes are ...
 
 When he out-psychos the lecherous redneck pickup driver and rescues 
 Alison from the ill-advised hitch ... 
 
   "I don't think I'll take this ride and I think I'll take your
   'wife' with me if you don't mind."
 
 When, poolside, he projects his entire tragic future because she
 wouldn't help him in English class ... 
   
   "And one day my big break comes ... the french fry guy dies and I
   get the job ... but three guys tell me all I have to do is drive a
   Lincoln Continental in from Mexico and I can make $300 ... when I
   get out of jail, I'm 35 and I have very few teeth ..."
 
 When he's on the hood of the car singing "Feelings" trying to rescue
 their ride from the show tune couple from hell ...
 
 When he's trying to bust into the locked trailer in the middle of a
 downpour and she pulls out a credit card but then sadly remembers
 that she can only use it in an emergency ...   
   
   "Well, maybe one will come along."
 
 ... and many, many more.   Anthony Edwards is pretty funny, too.  
 "Gib, this is Lance you're speaking to.  You have no morals."
 
 And, yes, I was fishing for a new p-name lasted night.   Bagged the
 "liquid soap" line midway thru one of Cusack's hilarious "philosophy"
 monologues.

    There may be hope JD. A Hidden area is used when there are more than
    1024 nodes in an area. They use area 62 to add more nodes. The problem
    is that area 62 is used as a standard so you may have conflicts between
    areas. That's why they're 'hidden'. If you contact the network person
    for the area you're trying to reach he/she should be able to give you
    the 'pass through router' and tell you how to use it.

    Well being someone who has (believe it or not) something like 11-15
    Sammy Hagar tapes (yes he has that meny out) I also have 2 montrose
    tapes (the band he was with before he went solo) and all the VH tapes
    since sammy joined them Id say he there all GREAT.  I really hated
    David Lee Roth and therefore even though VH had great sound I was
    really turned offed by there music...The only thing I didnt like
    was when they first got together they almost changed there name to
    
    	VAN-Hagar...Would have loved it...
    
    Now more importantly  about -12, you say the girl who played apposite
    john in better off dead did a movie with lots of titles...while how
    about the title of the movie and I still dont know her NAME.....

    I prefer the old Van Halen but for different reasons than what's been
    stated here.  Sammy is a great vocalist!
    
    I preferred EVH's guitar sound in the old days (first few albums
    especially!).  It was raw, agressive, and unprocessed.  We're talking
    plug into the Marshall stack and put it on 10.  Now that he's been
    fooling with keys, he writes all the tunes with the keyboard instead of
    the guitar.  His guitar is also way overprocessed and too laidback.

    Hawk, thanks for the question.  I've been thinking about this one
    myself.  I have a piece of blacktop with a basketball hoop in my
    backyard.  I've been thinking about painting a key on it (if I ever
    finish my inside work).
    
    What are you going to use to paint yours?  Are you going to rent a
    parking lot painter with some new space age paint?  Me, I'll probably
    stick to a brush and whatever I can find at Spag's.  I don't care what
    my neighbors think ;^).

That's what the town of Glastonbury uses to paint road lines.  It's got these
little reflective doo-dads in there to make it sparkle at night.

If you use something like that (even green) I guarantee that long after
your house and family are levelled by the nuclear holocaust, that paint
will be there....

    I just put up my hoop last weekend.  Waited a whole month after buying
    the house so Gail wouldn't accuse me of doing that before more
    "important" things, like hooking up a gas line for the stove.  Hah!

    Anyway, my new driveway is gravel.  I just put in new lines every time
    I go out by dragging my heel through the gravel.  What's really
    important is putting up the right kind of hoop.  Being one who suffers
    from acute WMD, I got one of those adjustable jobs.  Even *I* can stuff
    on a 7' hoop.  Impresses the hell outta the kids.  And my 8-year-old
    daughter can get the ball up high enough at 8' to play a decent game of

This is just a variation on the age old question, first posed in
"Stand By Me",  Could Superman beat up Mighty Mouse?

Now, they say that Mighty Mouse was just a cartoon, and Superman a real
guy, but personally I think that Mighty Mouse packed a pretty powerful
punch for someone that little.  

Now, it's obvious that Van Damme is really hurting.  His last movie was
in the theaters for 14 minutes 35 seconds before it came out on video
tape.  This time, he figured he needed some FX gimicks, so he decided to
do the "twins" thing.


Now, Steven Sagal on the other hand is married to the bodacious and lovely
(even if she did butch herself out) Kelly LeBrock.  That obviously gives
him a great edge, without a doubt.  I mean, Van Damme is the kind of
guy that you'd see doing the Pee Wee thing at home on a Friday night, because
no bodacious babes wanna be with him to do it for him.


Therefore, I'd give the edge to Seagal.  

NOW, on the other hand, if the survivor had to go up against Arnold, then
I'd say Arnold would win hands down.  Since we all know that excess
testosterone makes you talk with a thick Austrian accent, he obviously
has more testosterone than Seagal, who talks like the Godfather....


Finally, I'd say Mighty Mouse could kick ALL their butts at once, while
singing an operatic aria.....

    Most Poeple would pick van damme due to his size, but remember one
    of the all time greatest martial arts experts Bruce Lee...He looked
    like a big wind would knock him over.  I have a move with bruce lee
    and Chuck Norris where Chuck Norris is the bad guy (bruce lee trained
    chuck norris, and he kills him in the end of the movie) but anyway
    Chuck looks big compared to bruce...????..?!!  Im not kidding, so you
    cant go by size.  Id go with Segal due to his more mellow attitude, 
    he just seems more into it.

The coolist thing about Bruce Lee was that he sounded like a tom cat
mating when he fought.

All those noises and stuff added greatly to his stature as the Supreme
Martial Artist of all time.

However, what most people don't know was that Bruce's favorite food 
was broccoli.  He ate tons of it before every shoot.  Then, when he'd
be doing fight scenes, he'd be cheesin' 'em off left and right.

Because this left such an unpleasant addition to the sound track, they'd
have Bruce come back to the studio, and dub the movie with his patented
martial arts sounds....

It was tough on his co-stars too.  In fact, Chuck Norris says that his
poor showing in that movie was due to the horrendous stink in the studio.
He couldn't get his breath, and Bruce just kick the crap outta him....

    I dunno 'Saw, I think Bloodsport and even Kickboxer were better than
    the Segal movies I've seen.  Maybe that's because I'd rather look at
    Van Damme.  He's tres yummy.  CNN was interviewing him this morning
    and they aksed him "What about Arnold?"  He laughed and said Arnold
    isn't a fighter, instead of using his fist/foot, Arnold would throw
    a table.

    For one thing, it is difficult to tell just how good any of the
    Hollywood martial atrists really are.  Any of the real Black Belts that
    I've talked to say that the TV fights are so slowed as to be
    rediculous.  After all a fight isn't impressive to the audience if they 
    only see half of it.  The moves are real - just not at full speed.
    
    The other thing to remember in talking about physical stature is that
    everything is a tradeoff.  Speed vs. reach vs. hitting power.  Since
    most BB can hit more than hard enough to immediate permament damage,
    that leaves speed vs. reach.  And even big slow BB are FAST.
    
    Back when I expermenting with Karate, one of my instructors was 5'2"
    100 lb.  She could get in, hand you your privates, and get out before
    you realized she was within reach.  
    
    Instructors talk about locking out on your stikes.  You know you are
    doing it right when your sleave or pant leg of your Gi snaps like a wet
    towel.  Quiter but definitly audible.  Instructor also like to give a
    demo (right afterwords) where every stike in a form snaps.
    
    The bottom line is that the martial arts actors are good if they have
    the real life credentials.  Norris has a national title for one, I
    don't know the background of the others.

Can a foreigner on vacation in the U.S. buy a car and insurance without any
hassle?  (I can well imagine that this varies widely from state to state...)

If the answer to the above is yes, then which State(s) would be the best for
doing so?  (I'm thinking of tax and insurance rates for example).

Rick, I'd bet you'd bet better off renting.  At least that way you
know what you're getting.

Don't know how long the vacation is, but keep this in mind.  If you buy
a used car, you never really know what you're getting.  If it f___s up,
then *you're* stuck with it, whereas if a rental f___s up, or even if you
smash it up, it's call the rental place, have them tow it, and rent a new
one.

Plus at the end of the vacation you don't have the hassle of trying to
unload the car (usually at less than what you paid for it).  

And insurance is gonna come in a 6 month chunk (I'm pretty sure)....


Just my humble, "off the top of my head" opinion.....

Rick, I am not really sure what the laws are around foreigner's buying
cars in the U.S., but New Hampshire has no sales or excise tax so it 
would be your best bet state wise. Why don't you call the State Department,
maybe they could be of some assistance.

I don't know what a three or four month rental would be, but call
Avis.

When I was in France for 6 months, we rented a car every month.
Each month we'd have to go in and "renew" the rental.  Don't remember
what it cost....

    info by calling the DEC travel agent.
    
    Insurance has to be obtained for the state you live in.  There will
    also be registration fees.

All I'll say is what the player from Scotland said on a recent Rugby World.

When asked how he liked American Football, he said he rather liked it,
but felt it would be much more interesting if they'd take off all those

Actually, if you could take some of the athletes in the NFL, train them
to forget those football mannerisms which are bad for rugby, and then
have them play for the Eagles, I'd bet we'd do pretty darn well.....

    It seems that our 6 month huskie-shepard, according to my wife,
    "ate Greg's sock - whole" during a chase to get it back from him.
    
    I'm sure it looked great, a black dog racing around the house with a
    "stolen" sock in his mouth, followed by my son yelling for him to stop
    as he too raced around the house, followed by my wife, screaming at
    both of them to stop and for Digger to drop the sock.
    
    Naturally, if "top dog" was home this wouldn't have happened!

    Seriously, is there any danger to the dog?  Will my 7 yr. old's

    If it's a kid's sock as opposed to an adult's thick knee-high athletic
    sock it should be O.K.  I had an Irish Setter once that ate my
    underwear.  I'd find the Fruit-of-the-Loom elastic waistbands all over
    the lawn.

    Well, I guess when I get home I'l find one of three

    The vet said that a dog's stomach usually empties in 2 1/2 - 3 hours
    and it was probably too late to use syrup of ipipec (never could

    My FEW and son are out & the dumb dog cain't answer the phone so I

    It's probably beyond the stage where cleaning will fix it, JD.  Pull
    the deck, spend $25, and have someone give you an estimate on the
    damage.  Most shops will credit the $25 towards the cost of repairs.

    Stoopid dog update:
    
    Got home Friday night and asked the family if Digger had a "power Puke.
    "Nope" was the reply (but since they were doing the weekly shopping
    it could be possible that the dog did it in the yard so I covered every
    sq/inch of yard that his rope covers.  Found nothing so I geared up for
    dog power poop or internal problems.
    
    Uneventful night...
    
    Saturday I watched the dog closely, especially during doggie-dump time.
    hjoping to see his eyes squint and snout curl (like I sometimes do when
    a foot-long+ turd curls up the T-bowl).  Never happened.
    
    Later in the PM, I'm in the veggie garden and my son came running up to
    me saying, "Dad!!!! Digger's eating the sock again!!!! I saw part of it
    in his mouth and then he swallowed it again!!!!!
    (Damm, I thought, missed again)
    Stoopid Dog!!!!!!
    
    Sunday I'm mowing the lawn and what to my suprise lay straight ahead?
    Yup, one soggy, limp sock!!!!
    
    Right now, my wife is deciding if she REALLY wants to keep it, wash it
    and match it with the other on for Greg's use or if we should use it
    as a recycleable doggie-treat!  ;^)

    Let's say it's the bottom of the ninth, and the score is tied 0-0. 
    Runner on third, nobody out.  The next batter pounds one to straight
    away center, 400+ feet away.  The center fielder knows the game is over
    whether he catches the ball or not, so he watches it sail over his head
    and heads for the dugout while the ball rolls around center field. 
    Does the game end 1-0, or does the runner who keeps coming around make
    it 2-0?
    
    Let's say in a similar situation the bases are loaded and the batter
    lashes one down the line for what would be a sure double or possibly
    triple.  How many runs count?  Does the batter get credit for a single,

Nah, I just didn't have *time* to get in a_essay for Labor Day.

Labor Day to me is always kind of a sad time, because it means the
unofficial end of summer....

But, the spirit of Labor Day is still strong.  I mean, no, we don't
slave away in sweat shops 14 to 16 hours a day to eek out a meager
wage to support a family on.  But, times haven't changed that much.

For ages and ages, the Lizard Pig Dog Bosses(tm to the Wigmaster, WPLR)
have been afflicted with the same disease:  greed, combined with an
amazing lack of brains/common sense, and the obsessive need to cover
their asses.

I mean, we see it every day here at DEC.  Those of us who are in the
trenches, the grunts of the company have to deal with the politics
and stupidity of those making the decisions that affect us all.
We get to see poor performers who demean those of us who are hard
working, promoted rather than fired, and we see people who have given
years of faithful service, tapped on the shoulder and cast off like
a used condom.

So, on Labor Day, tomorrow, sit back and have a beer, or a non-alcholic
beer, or a lemonade or whatever, and try to bolster your flagging faith.
Don't forget for a moment that the hard work, and unwavering loyalty
that you display everyday does not go unnoticed.

It doesn't go unnoticed because when you're in the trenches, the people
who really matter, who really make it all happen, are the faces to the 
left and the right of you.  They are the ones who notice.

    Yesterday, the Vikings' Chris Carter made a spectacular catch and
    rolled into the endzone.  Well at least he was in the endzone from the
    hips down; his upper body and the ball were still on about the one yard
    line.  He simply stood up on his knees and had a TD.
    
    Question, if one of Carter's feet had rolled out of bounds in the
    endzone and then he gets to his knees, is it a TD or do you mark the
    ball at the one?

    the end zone.  Similar play happened to the Jets many years ago.  A
    wide receiver caught the ball while standing in the end zone.  He was
    leaning back towards the QB and fell out of the end zone back into the

    In the Just ask Jake note, before it was write locked, the question was
    asked if it would be possible for a high school football coach to win
    more games in a season than Clive Rush, Phil Bengtson, John Mazur,
    Raymond Berry and Rod Rust combined.
    
    To win more games in a season than John Mazur, you'd have to go
    undefeated since he won 9 games in his career.
    
    By winning 8 games, it would be possible to win more games combined
    than Clive Rush (5), Phil Bengtson (1) and Rod Rust (1).
    
    By going undefeated and winning a playoff game, it would be possible to
    win more games than John Mazur and either Bengtson or Rust combined.
    
    It would not be possible to win more games in a season than Raymond
    Berry since he won 48 games in his career.
    
    I also expressed that you were one of the few people who know how to
    spell Bengtson correctly since most people spell it as Bengston.  It's

    book:

    He then went on to say that these are just labels, and you can label

The rapture when the female fruit fly, spent from her copulatory endeavours

    OK you sattelite dish owners I need an answer to a question.  Anyone
    know which bird carries TSN, the Canadian version of ESPN?  The US vs.
    Italy Rugby World Cup game is going to be broadcast tomorrow morning
    and I'd like to have my father-in-law tape it for me.

 If it's a Canadian satellite you're looking for, you've got two
 choices ... Anik 1 and Anik 2.   Usually, on a satellite receiver,
 they are designated as D1 and D2 ... don't ask me why.
 
 D1 and D2 are between Westar 4 (W4) and the two Mexican birds,
 Morelos 1 (M1) and Morelos 2 (M2).    About midway on the Clark belt.
 
 If you're up nawth, D1 and D2 should be clear as a bell.  I can get
 them in South Carolina with no problems.
 
 Funny side note ... D1 and D2 carry Canadian radio stations on a few
 of their subcarriers.   Every time I tune in the Vancouver or Toronto
 stations, Cindy gets major league confused.   One time she was
 walking by as a weather report came on ... the Vancouver weather was
 a crisp *5* degrees outside.
 
 You should have seen Cindy's double take.   Say what ???   Had to
 gently remind her that the rest of the world uses Centigrade

    The term is quite old (decades) and several science fiction authors
    used the term. (Heinlein is another - Moon is a Harsh Mistress)  Don't
    know who is credited with the term.

    TANSTAAFL has been around since at least the late 1800's.  Originated
    in the practice of bars in working class neighborhoods offering free
    sandwiches at lunch time, to encourage laborers to come in and buy a
    beer to eat with the sandwich.  The meat used to make the sandwiches
    was frequently more salty than normal, encouraging the eater to drink
    more brew.  :-)

    A partial solution, but throw out all the stats for a minute, take an
    objective look at the young offensive talent in both leagues, and who
    do you like?  I gotta go with the AL.  Guys like Strawberry and Hojo
    are still the ones filling the stands in the NL, with even players 
    like Brett Butler are considered as MVP timbre, for cryin' out loud.  
    The AL holds most of the studs of the 90s in the Frank Thomases, Juan
    Gonzalezes, Ruben Sierras, and Ken Griffeys.  The NL has Barry Bonds
    and maybe Dave Justice in that top tier, but I don't think it quite
    stacks up.
    
    And I've always preferred NL baseball and still do, FWIW....

    I just found it interesting that the answer was automatically "The AL

    The NL has lots of young talent.  How bout Marquis Grissom? Benito
    Santiago?  How old is Craig Biggio?  Bonds.  Bagwell had a good year
    hitting in a horrible ball park.  Ron Gant - back-to-back 30-30's.  Who
    has done that among the Young Studs of the AL???  Hal Morris.  The
    Cards have some decent youngsters - Zeile, Lankford, et al.    Delino
    Deshields is decent.  Orlando Merced had a good rookie season.  Darren
    Lewis.    And a slew of good young pitchers.
    
    I don't think the NL is that far behind in the young star category. 
    Perhaps the AL might have more marquee names now - but in both leagues,
    the Marquee names are still proven veterans, for the most part.  The NL
    has depth in young talent..

    "Chuck E. Cheese" is a big rat, period.  The place is actually called
    "Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza Time theater".  It's for kids, you can get
    decent pizza, and beverages for the kids(beer and wine for Mom and
    Dad).  The area where you eat has a stage, with big mechanized puppets
    which every 15 minutes go thru a show for the kids.  The place also has
    all kinds of games(skee-ball, video games, that thing with a zillion
    ball that kids luv to jump in), and for every game the kids play, they
    "win" tickets, which cain be exchanged for "prizes" before ya leave.
    
    Da kiddies luv it.  Chuck E. Cheese "himself", is a large grey rat.
    They have somebody dressed up in a suit and walking around greeting the
    kids, too.  My kids see the guy and run the other way.

    West Point is a *great* place to watch a football game.  An autumn day
    up at the "Post" (Term we who lived near West Point called it...) is
    simply beautiful.  Used to go to some of the lacrosse matches too.  Now 
    they were *FUN*.
    
    But, for sheer spectical, nothing beats Army/Navy football games.

I've been playing about a year.


I never mentioned it since I don't like to brag a lot.  You know, if
I started telling how I love to play rugby, and doing things like putting
in game reports and things, people might think I had a HUGE ego or
something like that, and that's really not the case....

Gotta admit, I do love the game.  I could never figure out a way to describe
how much, or how I could love it considering the pain involved sometimes,
until I saw Patton recently on TV.

Old George was on the battleground in France, just after a battle.
His men had performed admirably but had survived some heavy losses.
At one point, this wounded Lt gave him a report and George bends down
and kisses his head.

He then walks up a little hill where he can survey the battle scene,
and he says:

 And, 'Saw, the comparison between Patton and Lee was actually to show how
 much alike they thought.   Sure, Patton was a *lot* rougher around the
 edges but Lee enjoyed the struggle every bit as much.   He just had a more
 eloquent way of saying the same thing.

    Ok, we know the Blue Jays haven't made it to a World Series, let alone
    win one.  Can anyone think of a player that has left the Blue Jays
    and then won a World Series somewhere else?  Would Jim Clancy be the
    first?  Guys like Flanagan and Parker don't count because they won it
    before they joined.  We tried last night and couldn't come up with one.

    pitchers in the middle of an at-bat?  For example, in the
    6th inning of last nights Game 5, Glavine walked Knoblauch,
    and gave up a single to Puckett.  After the count has already
    started at 2 and 0 to Chili Davis, could Bobby Cox insert 
    another pitcher to replace Glavine?

    We were sittin around Sat night watching the game, and someone asked
    about Bill Lee.  That led to a few other questions about him, and the
    one that we couldn't answer was:  
    
    In game 7 of the '75 (I think) series, Lee claimed he was ready to
    pitch, but Zimmer wouldn't start him because Lee had made that
    disparaging remark about Zimmer looking like a gerbil.
    
    Instead, he started a young guy, who, supposedly, never pitched again
    in the majors (at least never started another game.)  Who was it?

    It wasn't game 7 of the 75 series because Lee did start that game and
    gave up the monster home to Perez on the slow curve.  It was in a New
    York at Boston series in September of 78 when the Yanks came into
    Boston 4 games behind and won 4 blow-outs.  Lee, who was a notorious
    Yankee killer, began with the Gerbil remarks earlier in the season after
    Bernie Carbo had been traded.  Zimmer, for spite, wouldn't pitch him
    and started Bobby Sprowl, who was just up from Pawtucket, and he got
    racked.  That next spring training, Sprowl couldn't get the ball
    anywhere near the plate in batting practice and was hooted off the
    field by the veterans.
    
    If you remember, Darrell Johnson was the manager in 1975.

    of the bar that WBZ did the post-game show from on Sunday.  Apparently
    the joint also had a number of ads on during the game itself. 
    (Relatively ineffective ones, since the party that heard them didn't
    remember the salient pieces of info, as evidenced by this question.)

To anyone who saw lasted nights SNL Halloween special, I need a favor...


In the closing Wayne's World sketch, the one where they were revealing
the 5 worst treats you could get, the number 3 treat was Taffy Apples.
Garth made a remark about getting one from a lady who had 40 cats and
how it was covered with cat fur.  Wayne said that he'd better shut up
or he'd hurl.

They then revealed the number 2 worst treat, and it was hurl.  Wayne
proceeded to relate a story about this old man who'd give out little
bags of his hurl, but he didn't use that word....

It was something like "chudder"...


Anyone know what he said?
