        AppleVision 1710/1710AV free extended warranty If you have an
        AppleVision 1710AV monitor that needs repair and you are already
        past your 1 year warranty period (and you did not sign up for
        AppleCare), you may still be okay. According to David Benesch,
        Apple has a "secret" two-year warranty for these trouble-plagued
        monitors. However, you may have to squawk to Apple Customer
        Relations to get them to acknowledge it.
    
        Update: AppleVision 1710 Enhanced Customer Support Program Here's
        the official scoop on this extended warranty, as stated by the
        Apple Assistance Center (thanks, Mai Dao):
    
        "On Friday, December 20, 1996, Apple announced an Enhanced Customer
        Support Program (ECSP) that would apply to some, but not all,
        customers who have purchased either an Applevision 1710 Display or
        an Applevision 1710AV Display.
    
        The Applevision1710 Enhanced Customer Support Program provides
        customers who own qualifying Applevision1710 Displays with an
        additional 12 months of service coverage. That is, following the
        expiration of the customer's original Apple One-Year Limited
        Warranty, customers with a qualifying display are entitled to an
        additional twelve months of coverage. During their second twelve
        months of coverage, customers will be entitled to the same service
        coverage as was offered as part of their original Apple One-Year
        Limited Warranty.
    
        The Enhanced Customer Support Program affects customers who own one
        of the following two displays that are in need of service: an
        Applevision 1710 Display (M3322xx/A) or an Applevision 1710AV
        Display (M3323xx/A).
    
        To be eligible for the program, the Display must have a serial
        number in the following range: SG522xxxxxx through and including
        SG628xxxxxx."

My A/B experiments with the other machine convinced me the calibration problems
were with the monitor. Not only did we swap monitors and machines, but we ran
all the experiments on my system software (on an external drive). This was both
to keep software revs out of the equation and to not put his system software at
risk.

To reiterate, his monitor worked OK on my system box and software. I tried about
10 calibrations at various resolutions - all worked. My monitor, connected to
his system box, running my software, failed several times in 10 attempts.

You're right in keeping your original monitor. The only worthwhile warranty
replacement for an AV1710 is a Mitsubishi 17TX.

    I posted the extended warranty notice for the benifit of anyone that
    might still own an AV1710.
    
    Personally, I remember reading your earlier postings about the AV1710,
    plus problem reports others posted in news groups.  So when my wife
    needed a new 17" monitor, we made sure that we could view the monitor
    we were going to get before making a purchasing decision.  We ended up
    with an NEC 17" monitor from CompUSA using the Digital employee
    discount.
    
    So a belated thank you Andy for saving my wife and I from having
    monitor problems.

    Are there any reviews of the Apple Multiple Scan 1705
    	.28dpi, 1024X768, 17" Display?

    A friend is interested....and there have been a few of these
    for sale regularly in ONSALE for under $400.

    What is a good price for these?

    How about the same question for the Apple Multi-Scan 20"

    Another friend has just bought a 6400/180 from ONSALE.COM...$959!

    She really wants a 17" monitor, but it looks like the 6400 is limited
    to 1MB of VRAM.  Is there anyone out there with recommendations?

    Can you run a large monitor from a PCI card?  are there 17" monitors
    that will give you 256 colors or more?  (she said it looks like the
    Apple Monitor does not support 256 colors with only 1MB Vram?)

    Any recommendations appreciated..

    Here is what the 6400/180 fact sheet says:
    
    - 1MB of video RAM
    - 16-bit color for display of up to 32,768 colors on monitors
      using 640- by 480-pixel or 800- by 600-pixel resolution
    - 8-bit color for display of up to 256 colors on monitors
      using 832- by 624-pixel or 1,024- by 768-pixel resolution
    
    The fact sheet also says it supports monitors upto 17" (I'd guess 
    that would be the 1,024- by 768-pixel resolution at 256 colors)

    My 660av has 1MB VRAM soldered on the motherboard and I ran a 17 inch
    Sony monitor all the time that I had it.  I used 832x624 with a minimum
    of 256 colors.
    
    Looking at Guru for the 6400/180, it says that 832x624 is good for 8
    bit (256) color.  And 640x480 is good for 16 bit (32768) color.

    Right...although GURU says N/A for the 6400/180 and 1024X768.
    I think that must be a mistake.

    Can you get more than 256 colors at that resolution using
    a graphics adapter?  I think my friend wants more than 256
    colors if possible but liked the price of the 6400/180.

You should be able to, if the adapter has enough VRAM to support the higher
resolution.

    VRAM required (bytes) =
        Width (pixels) * Height (pixels) * Bytes per pixel
        + Space required for color mapping table (if stored in VRAM)

    VRAM required (megabytes) =
        VRAM required(bytes) / (1024 * 1024), assuming that the card doesn't
        make sub-optimal use of memory

    Bytes per pixel = 
        1 for 256 colors (from a 24-bit palette)
        2 for "thousands" (32768 or 65536) of colors (from a 24-bit palette)
        3 for "millions" of colors (24-bit video)
        4 for "millions" of colors with alpha channel (bits used to control
          things like transparency effects)

If the card supports TV video in/out as well as being a video adapter, don't
forget to factor in the VRAM needed for the TV functions.

    I guess that's what i'm asking....are there PCI video adapter
    cards that supply their own VRAM to support higher resolution.

I have a system with an IMS TwinTurbo 128 PCI card - comes with 4 or 8 MB 
VRAM (maybe 2 as well); ATI sells a "Virtual VR" card with 4 MB VRAM (maybe 
a 2 MB flavor as well) with optional TV tuner; ATI also sells some other 
card with different features.

There's quite a few PCI-based video cards to choose from - check out any 
MacWarehouse/Connection/Zone/etc catalog.

for descriptions of several hundred PCI cards of various types, including 
video cards.

The Apple fact sheet is correct (as it should be ;-)

My 6400/180 with 17 inch monitor behaves exactly like the spec sheet says:

    - 1MB of video RAM
    - 16-bit color for display of up to 32,768 colors on monitors
      using 640- by 480-pixel or 800- by 600-pixel resolution
    - 8-bit color for display of up to 256 colors on monitors
      using 832- by 624-pixel or 1,024- by 768-pixel resolution

    All PCI video adapters that I know about provide their own video RAM,
    usually enough for lots of colors at high resolutions.

    Computer City in Framingham has two 4 MB ATI cards for $270-280 which
    you might want to look at.  One has NTSC video in/out, the other lets
    you expand VRAM up to 8MB.

    One MacWeek Online (http://www.macweek.com/) column mentioned a cheap
    (< $200) video card that was supposed to have reasonable performance.
