Hi,
Do I get to be first? I do huh? Well..
My name is Alan Trevennor. I work(?) at the Welwyn Office in the
UK. My job is, notionally, a software specialist but I also get
involved with consultancy on various bits of 'funny' software and
hardware. I also go out as a hardware support engineer for non-DEC
products from time to time.
My personal interests are computers, music, dibbling around on my
home synths and listening to music.
(Alan, you mentioned music twice - mod.)
(Yes, Mod, I like music VERY much).
I hope in this conference to pick up some ideas for beefing up my
audio systems at home, and pick up on new ideas in this field
generally. I am especially interested in music cataloguing systems
and the kind of information you can get from CD's apart from the
music. I'd also like to know more about DAT and the newer music
enhancement systems which are appearing. Also info about filtering
systems - making your old records sound new again - systems.
Is that enough? ok!

| Hmmm.....looks like I'll be first from THIS side of the Atlantic.
I'm Ken Gosselin, Educational Technologist (fancy title for trainer)
at TWO/B5 (Tewksbury, Ma.) I've been with DEC ten years.
Whilst my main intent is to be a read only member of this conference,
I'll contribute if and when information I have is requested. I believe
the U.K. audio scene is every bit as exciting as the U.S., Japan,
etc. I hope to learn a lot about U.K. (and European in general)
audio through this conference.
Thanks for starting this file up, Dave.....I'm looking forward to
some lively discussions (hopefully without the cynicism towards
new ideas that was evidenced in the U.S. Audio file...)

Hi all,
Clark Wright, Software Engineer 1, Mro3 (yes, another bloody Yank
:-)
I've been with dec full time for 1 month, but before that I coop'd
here since april of 85...
lets what else...
My equipments mainly japanese, the loudspeakers are British however
(b&w's).
Now to get things rolling -
Cd's sound better than albums,
Large guage cable is best used to hang people who say wire size makes
no difference,
Gold ends are fine, but I prefer plotonium for a really hot sound...:-)
grins,

| Richard Davies, CSSE senior maintainability engineer, in Decpark2.
I'm not a hi-fi freak, just interested in listening to music. I'm
looking at CD's right now and trying to persuade my other half that
we NEED one.
My system is a
Sony TA-AX4 amp, all touch controls,
Sony TC-FX7 tapedeck, lots of lovely search/seek programming,
Sony PS-FL1 turntable, motorised draw like a CD,
Solavox ?? 80 speakers.
I worked out the other day, there's us and the two kids, between
us we have seven cassette players, so it's obvious what the dominant
media is.
Cheers,

Not much of a hi-fi buff. If it sounds OK to my battered ears, and its
cheap, fine! Currently, I've got a Sony amp, a Radio Shack (you heard
it right!) tape deck, a Soundburger (what's one of those? 8-) a
portable record player - OK, but a lot of rumble), and the all
important ghetto-blaster-that-is-falling-apart. What I lack is a decent
record deck and tuner.

I'm currently working as an ALL-IN-1 developer, before that I was

Interests include listening to music, going to concerts, and the

What I've got at the moment is,
Dual 505 turntable
Mission Cyrus 2 Amp
Marantz CD75 CD player
Aiwa ADF770 Tape deck
Rotel 850L Tuner
Acoustic Research 18BX Speakers
Still looking for something decent to put them on though, (they're
currently sitting on a hifi cabinet thats far too small for it all).

| OK, Mark, here goes...
My name is Dave Melton and I work in SWAS in the Thames Valley
District. After many years in musical limbo, I finally got around
to buying myself a decent system this year. I don't regard myself
as a Hi Fi expert - to my mind it is the music which should be listened
to, not the equipment. Nevertheless, a certain standard is required
but I am also very conscious of the law of diminishing returns.
I'll describe my system under the appropriate topic.

| I am Ian Smith, and I work in the FMIC in sunny Ayr as an MIS support
person. I have been here a little over a year, before which I was
at college in Dundee.
I wouldn't really call myself a hi-fi buff, although I certainly
do enjoy listening to my 70 LPs and 250 cassettes.
My listening stuff consists of an Aiwa CX-50 Casseiver (cassette
deck, amplifier, tuner, timer in one), an Aiwa turntable picked
up on the cheap in Dixons for 30, and a pair of Wharfedale
Diamond II's on brackets on the wall.
I did slaver recently though over my dad's new system: Dual turntable,
Yamaha cassette deck, Marrantz amplifier, Marrantz CD, Denon tuner
and Castle speakers. It sounds superb.
Enough.

Ian F. Philpott, Principal Maintainability Engineer in CSSE,
Nashua New Hampshire, currently working on DECwindows layered
products...
I started in audio as a teenager when I made a class A valved
amplifier to go with a turntable I'd been given. Worked up from
that through Leak equipment towards the bankruptcy courts. My
last system was a Quad 44/404 amp, Revox tuner, casette and two
B77 decks, Linn-Sondek turntable and IMF Monitor speakers.
In a mad moment when I was courting my wife I sold the lot and
currently don't have a decent system
I'm following this because I am now back in the market, and
still think British (and European) gear is better than Japanese
in many cases. My current shopping list is a mix of Naim, Linn,
and Revox gear, but who knows what I'll actually buy :-)

8.20 | Hello everyone... | ODIUM::PERCIVAL | Highfield Park, UK | Mon Sep 26 1988 14:15 | 20 |
| Hi, Ian Percival here! I'm a Principal Instructor for In-House
Training near Reading.
I used to be a keen (but poor!) hi-fi buff 10 years ago - but after
university let my interest fade. It was only two years ago that
my interest inflamed again - and I had the money to satisfy it!!
So I'm now poor again - but the proud owner of a Cambridge CD2,
Exposure Electronics IV, IX and some other number (VIII?) amplification
system, Snell Acoustic EII speakers, Nakamichi CR4E tape and Rotel
tuner.
You'll notice I'm (heresy some of you will cry!!) not a great fan of
vinyl - but no doubt people will argue about this for 50000 blocks
yet!!
I'm interested in any new developments in CD technology - as even
the Cambridge CD1 is not perfect yet!!!

| Hello, I'm Mike Batty in Warrington. I've been with Digital for
15 years (Field Service - man and boy)
My core equipment is ancient and venerable, and I am collecting
info for replacement now the wife and kids have stopped disposing
of my disposable income!
Technics Receiver
Thorens TD160 Deck (Heavily Modified)
2 X Aiwa Cassette Decks.
Sony CD Player
Cambridge Audio R40 Speakers
This is augmented by various bits of "PA" equipment like Crown, PA:CE
and Yamaha power amps up to 3Kw, since my primary interest is in
High Quality reinforcement of live music, mainly Folk and Jazz.
Other bits and pieces include various synths and keyboards, 3 video
recorders, Revox, Fostek and Teac open reels and 'Porta-studios'
and various effects.
My Audio interest started at the age of 12 with the finding of loads
of scrap tellys on the local tip. I retrieved 30+ 3 X 7 elliptical
speakers, and built some into an 18 speaker array. It moved a fair
amount of air, but it was some time later that I learned about
distortion!

8.22 | Steve calling anyone else, are you receiving me, over? | INCH::BRIGHT | There's a new kid in town... | Tue Nov 01 1988 13:02 | 20 |
| Hi, I'm Steve Bright working at The Crescent, Basingstoke.
I only joined DEC a week ago, and this is the first conference
I've contributed to.
See 19.16 for a list of what's lurking in my living room, but I'm
upgrading the primary components within the next few weeks. Over
the last fortnight I've spent about twelve hours auditioning record
decks at various unfortunate dealers (do we have a note where we can
praise/libel dealers?). After much thought I've finally decided what
turntable to get, but it certainly hasn't been an easy choice.
Anyhow, I wouldn't describe myself as a hifi fanatic or even
enthusiast (not 'til the new stuff arrives), I just enjoy listening
to music.
Oh and by the way, is anyone else still contributing?
Musically yours,
Steve.

8.23 | a late entry | IOSG::BOWIE | | Tue Nov 01 1988 18:20 | 18 |
| Hi folks, I'm Scott Bowie, human factors engineer for IOSG, in death
park II.
No hi-fi fanatic, but I was introduced to the world of Rega's, Linn
Sondek et al at an early age (my younger brother used to be the
gardener for Gulliford HiFi, nr Dawlish, Devon !?!), so unfortunately I
known there IS a difference - and worse I can hear it for myself.
Still, despite knowing better, I have a modest system of mainly
Japanese gear, with more than its fair share of flashing lights - and
it is certainly good enough for now (thank goodness for CD).
I like to keep an eye open for the new gizmo's in the pipeline and
usually buy a hifi magazine once a year just to keep in touch with
what's currently in fashion (interestingly the really good stuff
just keeps getting recommended year after year).
- regards,
Scott

| I might as well present myself...
I am Rik Steenwinkel, a FS. engineer from the Netherlands. As I
am regularly doing a site-engineer stint at JGO repair centre
(Nijmegen), I have a on-and-off chance at browsing through notes.
Some may have noticed that I'm trying to help solve other people's
problems with hifi hardware this way, and sometimes this works.
I'm not a Hi-Fi fanatic yet, but give me the chance ( =money) and
I might develope into one.
I like fiddling with gear to better the performance, sometimes
rebuilding from near scratch. Did a thorough job on my Tandberg
3600XD R-to-R tapedeck last year, with some nice results, soundwise.
And salvaged more than one piece of equipment which other people
would have been throwing away. Next big project is a pre-amp with
lots of inputs (see 'What's lurking..' for amount of gear to be
connected) and as linear, distortion-free and good-sounding as is
humanly possible.
Other hobbies include photography, cooking, computer-hacking, Monty
Python and model-railroading, combining them where possible. No, I'm
NOT serving slightly braised Scale 1:87 Clone AT's in a White Wine
Sauce for dinner. At least not tonight.
One more personal item. I'm single, and staying it. (Not too difficult,
you'd say. See above. I'm also working on the developement of the
56-hour day and the 16-day week containing 4 weekends. Takes some
time too....)

US and Canadian (Bryston). I believe that, except at the megamoney

rates. (I also covet fine British shotguns, but that's another
story.)

| Gid'day mate(!)
There's one in every crowd! A kiwi living in Munich, Barvaria
as an in house instructor (you try teaching OUTSIDE the house- bloody
cold!) Got into music (jazz in particular) at the tender age of
17. Got into part time (freetime) hi fi consultancy at 20 after
having my Michell turntable wrecked by an 'expert' doing an arm upgrade
having decided I could do as well as these trained gorillas (still
a sore point after all these years!). My younger brother still keeps
the faith down there in ENZED but I can't due to geographic
unsuitablity and lack of time here.
The main system in Kiwiland is:
Oracle (Transaudio) Delphi turntable
Fidelity Research 64fx arm
Dynavector 23R cartridge
Linntek head amp
modified Quad 33/monoblocked 303's (a poor man's arcwelder!)
Magnaplanar 1's
Luxman T-1 tuner
Nakamichi 1000
Bedroom system(;-) !!
Aiwa 550 tapedeck
Cambridge A60 amp(how slow are we?!)
Magnaplanar a's
BD1/Grace 707 turntable/arm
Munich-I-need-more-money-system!
Michell Gyrodeck(Transrotor)
Helius Orion arm
SME 3 arm (for oldtimes sake!)
Dynavector 17D and Linn K9 cartrides
Technics Class A mini system (sob!sniffle!)
Quad II's valve power amps
Arcus baby transmission line speakers (12" tall!)
Fisher (cough...a what!)D 205 5xCD player
Love music, hate rip off 'experts', wish I didn't need to work
so much so I could hear more music (only time for 5 albums a day
- I'm an addict!(and an idiot by popular demand!)

I got 'into' Hi-Fi seriously about three years ago, though apart

This is largely to due to marriage and a vast mortgage.
I enjoy all types of music and have around 350 albums mostly LPs.
I have no intention of going digital and dream of an LP12, Naim
amps etc etc. Oh well....... one day!
Cheers,

What is the reason you did not join the one in State? Anyway, my name
is Chak Lee. I am now in the software service networking unit. My daily
job is just to look after the biggest customer in our region.
I am now having a all-European-made audio system. French speakers, West
Germany amps and Philips CD. Sorry folks, no British made boxes.
However, I did have a pair of KEF 104.2 before. Few months ago I have
upgraded them to a pair of JM Lab 710s. I stay away from LPs because I
want more music than equipment set up.

I will be looking in from time to time, for any tips on what to
start off with. Up until now I have been a plug in the head phones

thinking seriously about getting a good (but not too expensive)
system. My tastes in music vary from Classical - HM so I will
probably need a system that is generally good.
Hope to see something along the lines of a "Start Up Kit"

| Hello fellow freaks!
I am Nick Pettefar and I live for music! I have just been to see
Pink Floyd live and they were Great! (Sorry about that, I know this
is the wrong conference for that kind of remark bu I just HAD to
tell somebody!)
My current system is:-
Thorens TD160 record deck with a home installed SME arm and an Ortofon
30 cartridge.
A Cyrus II amplifier.
A Quad FM4 tuner.
A pair of Mission 700S speakers.
A pair of Sennheiser 40? headphones.
An Aiwa 770 cassette deck.
A Philips CD473 CD player.
A Loewe HiFi Video.
The record deck is ancient now, circa 1978 but performs very well
and I don't play many records nowadays as I have about two hundred
CDs and about the same number of cassettes.
The Speakers might be changed within the next couple of years.
In the car, I have a Pioneer 9080 with an amplifier for the rear
speakers. The speakers are A&R units but I don't know what model
as the installers put the original Jaguar grills back over the top
of the chassis units.
Both the home and car systems sound great and I am happy with both
of them.
Nick.

I currently own...
A Revolver Turntable, with Linn LVX arm and several Linn cartridges.
A Rotel RA 820 a Amp.
A Denon 450 lw Tuner
A Sony Tc 320 b Tape Deck.
Pair Wharfedale Diamond Ritz Speakers.
QED C38 Cable, to be chanced soon.
1 piece of green sandpaper.
I find that most of my equipment is out of favour, but I like the
sound of it, over other more preferred options that the magazines
like, and wonder at the size of the relative backhanders paid to
magazines to dislike Revolvers and Wharfedale Ritz's.
My music is towards Doors, Hendrix, Police, Jesus&Mary Chain and
much Indie music. Also a sucker for Elgar !

Hello. My name is Jeff and I've been with DEC for 2.5 years now.
I have been a keen audio person since I was 17 which was when I
I bought my JVC system.
I have just bought a new JVC set up with twin cassette deck and
CD player, amp, tuner and turntable. I am not over joyed with
the speakers though and am after something else.
My new JVC takes over from my pioneer stacking system of 4 years.
I may keep the speakers from this as they sound better on the JVC.
If anyone wants some new JVCs give me a shout. 7852 x4016.

8.40 | Hi Mark! | CURRNT::SAXBY | Isn't it 5.30 yet? | Mon Nov 13 1989 15:25 | 25 |

Hello.
I'm Mark Saxby and was drawn to this conference by one of the
moderator's comments about Bang & Oluffsen equipment.
I don't claim to be a audiophile (isn't that illegal?), but I do
know what I like the sound of, and I'm not fooled by figures that
tell me that I can get a better sound out of one unit, when, to
my ears, the other one sounds better.
For me B&O is great, because I like the sound and I don't want to
spend years and/or thousands of pounds trying out various components
until I achieve a sound that MIGHT sound better in a acoustic room
than a B&O.
I suspect that most people, like me, listen to music on their record
players (or whatever :^)) in a room intended for living rather than
listening to music and that the quality of the sound heard by the
person is affected more by the contents and layout of the room than
by the unit producing the sound.
Mark
PS B&O make great looking stuff too!

Gary Cowan, EIS Belfast.
Bought a Hi-Fi about 10 years ago and getting aroung to upgrading
at last. Current main system consists of:
Linn LP12/Basik plus/K9
Cambridge Audio (C100/A100) pre/power amp
Gale 401 loudspeakers
I took (some of) Dave Sallitt's advice (found elsewhere in this
notefile) to arrive at the above configuration. May look to changing
the speakers at a future date. Items above are second-hand (except
the pre/power amps of course).
Just like listening to music!

| Stephen Parker, working in Finance in Millenium House in Reading
- mailstop RGM.
In my student days, I built a pair of speakers - Goodmans treble
and mid-range, Richard Allen crossovers and 12" Fane bass. They
stood about 3'6" high, and shook the foundations.
Then She who Must be Obeyed decreed that they were too big and ugly
- I never got round to veneering the cabinets or putting cloth over
the front - and I was banned from using them. I still have the baffle
boards somewhere, with the units mounted on them.

| Well, I've finally got round to it. As some of you know, I'm one of
the vicious cynics of the US-based AUDIO conference. I also happen to
be a tube-o-phile, Linn-o-phile, anglophile, francophile, europhile,
happy owner of a Musical Fidelity Preamp II, etc., and I've come to
ask a favor (in another topic), so it only seemed proper to sign in
before asking :-).

in sunny Basingstoke.

I have been with digital for 7+ years ...
I started exploring the Hi(?)Fi-World about a year ago and become more
and more picky on the sound the more I work on improvement ..
Most of my components are German-Make (accidetially, absolutely not for
patriotic reasons!)

| well guys .....i'm off
the 17th December will be my last day with Digital (my choice)
so no longer will I enjoy this notes conference.
Been a lot of fun, particularly the good-sport owners of Linn kit who I
occasionally cocked-my-snook at (no hard feelings afterall I use KAN
stands!)
Maybe we'll cross soldering irons on the NEWS service ? they must have
an AUDIO entry
keep the faith
