883.0. "Lights on at the Crescent" by KERNEL::PETTET (Norm Pettet CSC Basingstoke) Mon Nov 27 1995 07:39

Whilst passing, on may way to work this morning at 06:50, I noticed
that all the lights in the Crescent were on. Now it maybe that the
security guard is afraid of the dark but I do believe it is a terrible
    waste of resources/power/money.

Is is really necessary to have all the lights on in an empty
    building?

    I'm sure this will amuse...

As I was leaving Tuesday afternoon, I was accosted at the front of the
building by a large and grumpy lady who asked "Is this Digital?"

I kind of managed a smiled 'yes' before she launched into a barrage of
abuse about how she 'had gone to the other building - which had a large
Digital sign - and she couldn't get in because there was no one there, and
she had wandered around looking a fool, before driving up here, which
had no indication that it was Digital apart from a small sign...'

This diatribe was coloured with some interesting language.

which had no indication that it was Digital apart from a small sign...'

Well the sign outside the CSC is certainly tatty and very out
of date, but I'd hardly call it small. The "For Lease" sign
outside the Crescent is a lot larger though.

It has always surprised me that there has never been more of a
distinction between the two buildings in Jays Close.

The CSC aka 'Viables' can only be described as 'the digital building in
Jays Close' as there is no building identification apart from the
digital sign by the road. Therefore anyone entering Jays Close from the
GL roundabout will of course go to the Crescent first as they would not
be expecting a plethora of digital buildings.

It would be _most_ sensible to remove the digital sign completely from
outside the Crescent and/or put a notice up, pointing visitors up the
    road to the CSC.

    God, its not rocket science.

I totally agree with Royston, I have to specifiy it's the chocolate
brown square building and not the cresent when dialing for pizza,
    otherwise the pizza never arrives...

Well - Digital has applied for planning permission to erect a new
illuminated sign at the Crescent, so maybe the pizza man won't be
    having a problem in future...

so you could collect that dirty towel you left on a desk up there when
    you were a student...

A planning application notice has been posted outside the Crescent
for "internally illuminated freestanding advertising signs".

What's all that about? Are we going to put new DIGITAL signs
outside our empty building, or is it "For Sale" boards that can
be read through the long winter evenings?

	Ian.

I'll answer my own question, I've been told that part of the
building has at last been let.

Well apparently that's the answer. The same planning permission
notices	have now gone up outside Skippets and the CSC. I'm told
by reception they relate to new DIGITAL signs.

    Ian,

You're information is good. We are putting up exciting new-Burgundy
signs outside all the buildings we own/rent/lease/occupy. This will be
like the one outside DECpark. Pretty they ain't but illuminated they
    am.

Part of the corporate image standardisation I believe.

	Jon,

   Your information is good.

	It happens sometimes :-)

We are putting up exciting new-Burgundy signs outside all the buildings
   we own/rent/lease/occupy.

...or trying to sell. Here is some more good information:

The standard industry practice if you have to get rid of property is
to make	sure you disassociate yourself from it as far as possible.
Notice how shops, banks etc turn their shop signs around when they
close a branch, there is no worse publicity than a "For Sale" board
	next to your Company name.

An alternative practice is to raise huge and expensive new illumin-
ated advertising signs outside your empty offices to give the
impression you are going out of business.

I'll buy you lunch for every company you find who take this second
approach, provided their name doesn't begin with "D".

	Ian.

    Ian,

Nice dig but I think you missed one little bit of PM&S subtlety (PM&S
can be subtle - no, I don't believe it!).

The fact that we are applying for planning permission to erect an
illuminated sign outside the Crescent does not mean we are actually
going to do it. After all, we have had outline planning permission for
six years to build a four storey office complex behind Crescent
(provisionally called Skippets 2). We never started the foundations
    though.

Speculative developers use this technique to make property more
desirable to a potential purchaser. "I can sell you this block of
prestige offices and you won't even need to ask the coucil for
permission to put your company sign up outside because we've already
gone to all the trouble of getting planning permission sorted out for
    you. Aren't we nice :-) "

So you can save your cynicism up for the next note by Steve (why do
people laugh at me in banks and shops) Freke.

Good point. I still thinks it's lunacy to leave our existing signs
	there though.

That will not happen when you get your new 6million Valve Corsa Sport,
with flarred wheel arches, huge spoiler and massive air ducts in the
    bonnet will it ?

    Cheers,

PS. The window sticker "Tarmac Terrorist" would be very apt in the said
    corsa..  :-}
