Conference govt02::basingstoke

    It sounds like the tape transport may not be going at full speed, I
    have come across this on ordinary cassette recorders previously, caused 
    by a few different things:
    
    1. Batteries almost flat on a battery operated recorder, probably not
       your problem as an answer phone would be mains operated I suspect.
    
    2. The drive belt from the motor to the capstans etc was gunged up with
       muck, solved by removing the back taking, out the belt and cleaning
       it and all associated parts & applying a bit of WD40. 
    
    3. It could also be slipping in the drive belt which probably requires
       a new belt.

    Doea anyone know where in the Bstoke offices I can find the latest
    Training catalougues - the Schedules book and the four contents books? 
    There used to be a library around somewhere?  I imagine there must be

    You'll be lucky - that disappeared a while ago.  Best place to try
    is DECpark library, or contact Learning Services in REO for a 
    catalogue.

    Anyone know how much it costs to leave a car on the Car Park at the
    back of the Railway Station?  I'll be leaving mine there tonight
    between 5ish and midnight, and I have horrible memories of the car park
    at Reading Railway station costing me a fiver or so for that length of
    time.

    If you want to save money then why not park your car in the multi-story
    CP. When you arrive back there will no one to take your money and you
    leave for free. It means a short walk but the car will be safer as well
    as they have patrols in the MSCP  and the railway carpark is renown for
    car damage late at night.

    one where you end up on the top floor, having gone on that curly road
    from the front of the station...).

    No the one the other end. However, you can come down the steps at the
    end nearest the station and end up half way along the shopping centre.

Several buses a day direct from the town centre bus station to Heathrow bus
station (Terminal 1/2/3). 

Give Hampshire Bus or National Express a ring.

This service is very cheap if you can book your return ticket in advance -
unfortunately you do have to personally go and pick up and pay for your ticket
during their working hours!

    I did this once and forgot to check the times of the return trips. 
    Arrived at Heathrow only to find I'd missed the last one by several
    hours!  Its a long walk down that M3 :-)
    
    You might want to check the train to Reading then the coach. The coach 
    from Reading runs every 30 minutes up till 20:15 (last one at 21:45) 
    and from T1 till 21:45 (last one at 23:15) (which arrives in Reading
    with 5 minutes to spare to catch the last train to Basingstoke.

I once got on it and ended up in Southampton !! I'd got on the wrong
one. The service runs (or ran then, a couple of years ago) from
Southampton via Basingstoke to Heathrow and some bright spark
must have though it'd be a good idea for them both to leave
Basingstoke at the same time, one going to Southampton and the other going
to Heathrow. It just said Southampton-Basingstoke-Heathrow on the
front. I was more than slightly miffed.

I wouldn't expect the Mamouth or the Continent to be open, as these are French 
businesses, but I do know that the Calais Wine and Beer Warehouse is open on 
Sundays (well worth a visit if you want wine, beer, some spirits, sherry and 
port).

On the other hand, you may be in luck with the hypermarkets too.

        Well, consensus of opinion says that they are not open on a Sunday
        except for possibly the last 3 Sundays in November.  They are
    	however, open late (until 20:00/21:00) on Saturdays.

    Does anyone out there have a PC (with 8mb of memory) that we can borrow
    for a few days/couple of weeks?  We badly need one for some work that
    we are doing at the moment which involves some heavy Excel
    manipulations, and we aren't even allowed to think about ordering
    equipment until July...

    Has anyone joined one of those book clubs you see advertised in the
    press?  I'm thinking specifically of the one called QPD.  I'd like to
    suss out if the discounts offered in the magazines they send are enough to
    make it worth joining.  Any opinions or does anyone have a book club

    I was a 'member' of QPD for about three years - the books they sell
    are reasonable - I could usually find something in each months 
    magazine that I wanted to read.  I can't exactly remember if you
    had to buy a certain number of books - but there was no hassle when
    I left.  
    
    I'm thinking of joining again after a two year gap - I'm hoping there
    will be a totally different set of titles available.

    up the same books in WHSmith for the same price as the bookclubs these

    If you take a trip to the Basingstoke Library they hold a register of
    all the significant clubs in and around Basingstoke with a contact
    address or telephone number. You name it they've got it from cycling
    to flower arranging.

    If it's a relatively modern Vauxhall there is a better than 50% chance
    it is a LeasePlan vehicle (let's face it - who would spend their _own_
    money on a Vauxhall :-}).
    
    So take the registration number and phone LeasePlan - they'll tell you
    who the driver is if it's a Digital leased vehicle.
    
    Or alternatively, leave a note under the window saying "Sorry about the
    minor scratch, please let me pay you �5000 to get it fixed.  John Corne"
    and wait for the phone call  ;-)

    In Basingstoke ?  Are you sure you've got the right conference ?  I
    could tell you where to ride a Bison, chase rabbits, shoot birds, stand
    on Skates, but not swim with Dolphins.  I guess the closest is you can
    stroke the Skates at Seaworld in Portsmouth.
    
    Unless of course Basingstoke Council agree to planning permission
    for the next Walt Disney world just next to the Bingo Hall in the
    leisure park. ! ;-)

    It is not me who wants to go swimming, it is a surprise I was trying to
    get together for a friend. 
    My only options are to fly out to Ireland, or go swimming with Vikki, 
    so it looks like I will have to come up with somethings else.

    Why don't you buy an inflatable dolphin.  I know for sure they do
    whales, so maybe you can get your hands on a dolphin too.

    swim with Great White Sharks there. Sometimes not optionally.

        Why do people in this building insist on calling other work mates
    "chap".

    I can't say how annoying it is to have someone call you chap. When they
    know your name, why not use it. It is not a "cool" way to great people.
    In fact, it is rather belittling to know that someone prefers to call
    you chap, rather than great you by your name. It is almost as if people
    could not be bothered to get to know your name, and are only greeting
    you because they feel they have to. 

    So show you mean it by using someone's name when you greet them next. 
    It shows you know who the person is, and are genuinely interested in how 
    they are doing. Not the all too common, "'right chap" If you are not
    going to greet someone properly do not do it at all.

    note. After entering a reply title, and hitting yes, to continue, it
    just bombed out. I did a sho error, cut and pasted this into a mail,
    and tried to sned to the conference moderator but this damn thing
