| Any number of reasons could be involved, not the least
of which might be that they simply weren't generating
enough money there for whatever vendor was filling them
or perhaps newer ones were coming in? All are still up
here in WMO, but the Globe and Herald rarely have many
takers, and USA Today may sell 2 copies a day.
I've seen them moved in other plants from INSIDE to OUTSIDE
the facility though. HLO was one place as I recall.

I saw that, too, Edd, and I wondered why they were removed. Outside
MRO1, the papers were frequently all sold, so I don't know if no sale
was the reason. Of course, maybe they were sold out only on the
relatively rare occasion when I wanted to buy a paper.

>careers, and the viability of the company, but people from MRO, are
>concerned about getting their morning paper
but many of those papers do have help wanted section in them !
may be some wants to see what kind of work is out there, not that
they want to leave, but just in case, they'll a better idea where
things stand. (no bun intended)
>or what type of coffee they get in the cafeteria (see the recent
>Dunkin Donuts note... :-) )
aha, a coffee topic again!
I think coffee overrides any boundaries that might separate us, coffee
is needed in peace and war times, coffee is indifferent to your
current affairs, coffee is needed regardless of the state of the
company, the state, the country, or even the world.

|
2065.9 | Why not ask why? | WMOIS::MACK_J | | Mon Aug 24 1992 11:30 | 16 |
| Since 'Slow Sales' doesn't appear to be the case then I
suppose asking facilities, security or Personnel at the
site as to the specifics for the removal of the machines
would probably yield some answers/reason.
Regardless of whether there are machines on site or not
though, the Newspapers didn't go out of business, so
picking one up on the way in to work or on the ride home
will still get the news to whomever.
Removing vending machines from Company property does fall
into the realms of Company perogative I suppose, and while
it mightn't be popular evidently someone thought it was
appropriate to do so.

Do you read a paper at all? I do. Not on company time but I do

Right on answer! Last I heard we ARE allowed to take a lunch

anyway I wish, so long as it isn't determental to Digital.
So, to those who wonder where to find the time to read the paper
you do have time to do so during your lunch break.
Again, who knows why the machines were removed, but as I also
noted, asking why wouldn't harm anything.

On the other hand, I noticed some weeks ago that the sign in our lobby
that used to say "WELCOME TO your-facility-name-here...

security was that too many people were worrying about it. (!!!)
So, maybe you should ask security... maybe they thought too many people
were worrying about Bosnia, global warming and the Bush/Clinton race,
too.

I'm as paranoid as the next person, maybe more so ;-)
But, has anyone considered that the owner/vendor of the machines went broke or
had a better location or .................
and that DEC had nothing to do with the machines being removed?

2065.35 | | CSTEAM::LANGLOIS | | Tue Aug 25 1992 13:00 | 12 |
| Given the fact that neither Security nor Building Services knew
anything about the machines being removed, I'd say it's a pretty good
guess the vendor removed the machines.
Even though the machines sold out of papers by 8:00 am every morning
maybe they didn't think there was enough in it for them. Possibly the
MRO1 machines make more money.
I guess...who really cares except when stuff like Hurrican Andrew
happen I do like to read the paper at lunch.

| I cant believe my own eyes, here we are, setting around saying that
the building services and security know nothing about the disappearance
of the boxes, and then just assume that the vendor might have removed them?
I think the proper thing to do in such a case is to call the
local police enforcement department and report the matter immediately, the
police officers will be able to follow up on this, in the means and
ways they have available in their possessions , that is why there are
there for.
Meanwhile while the above avenue is being explored and exercised in its
official means , has any one given some thought of contacting the vendor
themselves to obtain informations that might help to shed more light
on the matter? the vendor might be able to confirm or deny activities
relating to them picking up the boxes themselves !
we wasted all this time without even calling the appropriate
channels of authority?
who ever took them is probably 200 miles away by now, and any
evidence might have been destroyed by now.

solution was simple. Track down the cause for the queues forming in
