815.0. "Digital culture vs. elsewhere" by WHYNOW::NEWMAN (What, me worry? YOU BET!) Tue May 16 1989 18:53

One of our residents came across this memo at one of our customer sites.
It is a legitimate memo. I thought it would be interesting to post it here
to give people an idea of what "the culture" is like at other companies.
The memo has been sanitized to remove the references to the specific
customer.

Don't get me wrong, I can see how running can be dangerous. It is the fact
that there is an official corporate rule against it that I find somewhat
humorous. I guess I should check the "Orangebook".

Subj:	RUNNING ON COMPANY PREMISES

The Safety Office has received a number of complaints over the past few
weeks concerning running in the main aisles and in the parking lot. The
problem is particularly evident at the end of the workshifts.

Please inform your organizations to instruct their employees that running
on the premises is a violation of (name deleted) rule #6 which prohibits
causing a disturbance by running. Their assistance is also required to
enforce this regulation.

Your assistance is requested in addressing this issue as an alternative to
more severe corrective actions.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

That sounds a lot like the memo which complains about people dying on the job
without falling down, making it hard to distinguish them from the workers who
were still living.

So all those "runners" will now start race walking, leaving the safety
office with yet another complaint. Then will come the speed limit, and
then the radars, and then the stealth clothing, and then the ....

Rules like this simple don't work, but it takes officious regulators a
long time to figure that out.

re .1 - I agree with you but I can assure you that the memo is
genuine. You would have to understand the customer to see why this is
nothing out of the ordinary for them to do.

You know Andy, it's a shame this comes from New England - or we
could send it to Esther Rantzen as a candidate for a "Jobsworth"
    award...

    /. Ian .\

PS: for our non-UK readers: Esther Rantzen hosts a BBC TV show called
"That's Life" that most weeks awards a "Jobsworth" (a gold sprayed
peaked cap) to the person upholding the stupidest corporate rule
because "it's more than his job's worth" to allow an exception.

Seems most of you assume this was done with the intent of gaining
worker compliance...I'd bet it was done to cover their a** in case
    of injury attributable to running.

    re .5

I do not know if the rule applies in the UK but they company that
issues the memo has numerous offices in the UK. Does this count?

I would be more than happy to fly over (at someone else's expense) to
the UK to receive the award in the name of the company :-)

Reading .0 gave me the feeling I used to get very regularly a few
years ago in Another Company. Something along the lines of, "Omigod
here we go again" with the anger starting to rise close behind.

It was nice to remember that the mail is 'Someone Else's Problem.'

re- .6 CYA is probably right.

You beat me to it, Tom. It probably is a limit the iability type of
memo. Especially that part about in the aisles, if they mean inside
the buildings. I don't understand that bit about the parking lots
    though.

If you look closely I am sure you will find some no running or
jumping rules in place at specific sites even here in DEC. The most
likely would be in maunfacturing, warehouses, and labs. This would
be for safety sake, not, I hope, just so someone could be a b***buster.
815.10are we talking running, or RUNNING?MISFIT::DEEPSet hidden by moderatorWed May 17 1989 14:3214

Are we talking about running (jogging... the exercise kind), or people
racing to get out of work as fast as possible?

I'd put a smiley face on that, if it wasn't for the fact that at one
of my previous positions, I used to observe the manufacturing folks at
this particular defense contractor standing in line from about 7 minutes
before quitting time, to be first at the timeclock, and literally
*RUNNING* out of the building to their cars!

Talk about loving your job! 8^)

re .10 - I don't know if we are talking about the same company or not
but you are exactly right as to the situation. The lines at the
timeclock appear to be based somewhat on seniority, with the first
person with their card in the clock so it can be punched exactly at the
    stroke of shift change.

What this rule does not cover is the fact that you can literally get
run down in the parking lot with the cars racing to leave after the
drivers have run to their cars.

Unfortunately there does not appear to be the same level of enthusiasm
with everyone getting TO their jobs in the morning.
