1561.0. "FUEL TANK FAB. ?" by POLAR::SIBILLE () Wed Sep 22 1993 11:12

I'm faced with a problem regarding fuel tanks. I went through the notes
and did not find what I want so here it is. I'm designing a scale R/C
of the Yak-15 which is one of the first jet made by the Russian.
I have only 1/2" on each side of the fan to put fuel tanks and cannot
find one that thin. I would like to make my own. Can I use the plastic
use to make canopy and mold it to my specs. or should I use something
    else?.

Has anybody of you guys made your own fuel tank and how did you
    do it?.

    Thanks

    Jacques

Check on Sullivan tanks. They make special ducted fan tanks that wrap
around the fan housing and are only about 3/4 of an inch thick.

Pity you don't have 15/16" as Tower advertise ducted fan tank that
    would be a starting point.

Sorry I just have 1/2" to play with. If nothing is available with that
size I have to make my own.

Most tanks are made out of Polyethline. This stuff is impossible to
glue. I would look for a suitable container in the drug store like a
shampoo bottle rather than try to make a tank. If you make one you
might have to use metal sheet. I wouldn't want to do it.

Polyethylene might be impossible to glue but it is easy to mold. You
can get it in liquid form. All you need then is a wax inside mold and a
outside mold in any material providing that it is in two half.

    This should be feasible

You could get a piece of styrofoam board at a lumber yard, cut out a
piece the rough size you need your tank to be, then sand it to final
shape, cover it with fiberglass with your fuel and vent tubes in place,
then put gasoline into the finished tank to melt out the styrofoam.
This would be cheap and fairly easy to do and you could make the exact
shape you need to fill the available space you have.
