| A letter has been circulating written by Mr. A. Peracchi of the Associazione
Aeromodellisti Milanesi dated 10 Marzo 1991. It states in part:
"The FAI General Assembly, that took place in Paris in the past 13th- 14th of
February, confirmed that the CIAM Bureau could not, and can't, cancel a World
Championship approved by FAI, and therefore, in recognizing completely valid
Italy's candidature, stopped the modification of the international calendar
brought by the CIAM Bureau."
The above is an exact quote from this letter implying the 1991 Aerobatic,
Helicopter and Pylon championships will not be in Australia.
At the CIAM Meeting in Paris last week it was confirmed the 1991 World
Championships WILL be in Australia. The AMA delegation supported Australia's
nomination by stating they would pull out of the FAI if it was returned to
Italy. (heavy stuff)
It was reported to me the Paris meeting declared the matter now closed and
looked forward to a successful World Championships in Wangaratta Australia in
October.

| Exactly what is the CIAM Bureau and its relationship to the FAI?
I've always wondered how/why the various FAI class championships
are awarded to certain countries. Sometimes it's obvious, ie, former
eastern block countries would only host non-R/C events because owning
a transmitter was a no-no for the average citizen.
Maybe the Italian host club(s) got a little carried away with the
thought of making a good profit off of hosting the F3A,C,D events.
Australia in Oct. sounds like a better venue than virtually any
place in Europe.

| > Exactly what is the CIAM Bureau and its relationship to the FAI?
Good question. I am not exactly sure but it's something like Confederation
International Aeromodeling Mxxxxxxx in French. It's the FAI Aeromodeling
governing body/sub-committee that controls international events and rules.
The WC's are distributed on a bid basis. Country's put in a proposals for an
event and then all proposals for that event/s are reviewed and subsequently
allocated at the Feb/March CIAM meeting. The event is then listed on the FAI
calendar WC's are held on a 2 year cycle, in RC it's Aerobatics, Helicopter and
Pylon one year; the next is Glider, Scale and Electric. Free flight and Control
line all have a similar system but I don't know the details.
The main problem with Italy was the cost. They had included boat cruses and
cocktail parties, all unnecessary and added expense and extra days
accommodation. The committee appeared unbending and believed the competitors
would pay the extra. The CIAM just as pig headed said no. Australia had offered
to host the 1993 WC's so the CIAM asked us if we could take it 2 years early.
As I am the President of the Radio Control Aircraft Society of New South Wales
(NSW) and therefore a member of the Model Aeronautical Association of Australia
Council (our AMA) I received a phone call early one Saturday morning last
December to ask for my opinion. All other Council members agreed, the same day
the CIAM was FAXed with the acceptance and Australia had a WC 2 years early.
Wangaratta is on the NSW Victoria border 5 hours drive South from Sydney and 4
hours North from Melbourne. It is the Center of one of Australia's best wine
growing areas. The event is to be on Drages Air World Airfield. Drages is a
private museum with an excellent range of early aircraft, many of them still
flying regularly. Wangaratta is a small rural town that has in the past hosted
Australian Nats. It is very supportive of the WC and is offering some
sponsorship.
October is mid Spring in the southern hemisphere, the days will be cool
(70-75F), the nights could drop to 40-50F.
I will update details as they become available.

and he don't need any support.
