1243.2 | Chart/Micromold address for checking on Turbax | DIENTE::OSWALD | Randy Oswald | Mon Sep 24 1990 12:51 | 23 |
| Hmmm, not much interest so far, did I say something to offend? Is it my breath?
Anyway, after doing a little digging I find there are at least two sources of
the fans we need. The original A10 builder was from England and he used fan
units by Chart/Micromold. Could one of the noters across the pond check on these
units and let me know what the current price is? (Address and phone number at
the end of this reply)
Also appropriate are Turbax fans. These are made in the US (I think). I have
seen adds for them in the model mags, but now that I need 'em I can't locate
them anywhere. If anyone out there has an address and/or phone number please
post it here or in the address note. Also any specifics on their fan units would
be appreciated.
Thanks,
Randy

1243.3 | Turbax fans in the USA from Larry Wolfe | UPWARD::CASEYA | THE DESERT RAT (I-RC-AV8) 551-5572 | Wed Sep 26 1990 11:39 | 19 |
| Randy,
Turbax fans are distributed by Larry Wolfe's Jet Hangar Hobbies. Jet
Hangar's address is:
12130G Carson
Hawaiian Gardens
CA 90718
(213) 429-1244
Another possible source for the fans yer' looking for (and quite
probably superior in the performance area) is Hurricane Fans. I'm
pretty sure this firm is also based in So. Cal. but do not have the
address. Check the magazines for an ad.

1243.5 | poor plans | DIENTE::OSWALD | Randy Oswald | Wed Sep 26 1990 11:58 | 16 |
| Thanks Al and Al,
Steve had contacted Hurricane. I believe you're correct that they have a
somewhat better product, but at $130.00 apiece for fans only my partner and I
choked a bit. I spoke to Larry at Jet Hanger yesterday. He was most helpful.
The first thing he did was convince me we had the wrong set of plans. We got a
set drawn by some guy in England. They're bad. Perpendicular lines aren't,
parallel lines aren't, tri stock is labelled 3/8 but measures 1/2 on the print,
and on and on. I've redrafted about half the formers so far using Autosketch.
Larry talked me into calling Mike Beaulieu in Maine and ordering the plans
drawn by George Miller. These should arrive next week. 'Till then we won't be
working on the A10. I'll post an update after the new plans arrive.
Thanks for all the help,
Randy

1243.6 | New set of plans are here | DIENTE::OSWALD | Randy Oswald | Thu Oct 18 1990 15:53 | 18 |
| Well, the new set of plans have arrived and.....
There's no comparison. The first set we ordered were 1 sheet about 80 x 36
inches. Very little detail, and as I said previously the drafting wasn't
particularly accurate. The new set are three sheets 102, 108, 40 x 36 inches.
An incredible wealth of detail on all the intricate workings of the A10. The
two larger sheets are the normal outlines/structures one with the wing and the
other with the fuse. The third sheet is naught but part outlines. In general
these are wonderful! It goes without saying (but I'll say it anyway) that we'll
be building from the new plans.
Now I have a request. The construction of this plane was featured in the April
1985 issue of Scale RC Modeler. Since neither Steve nor I were into the hobby
then we don't have a copy. Does anyone out there have one who would be
willing to copy the article and send it to us? We'd appreciate it.
Thanks,
Randy

| Hi Mike,
I'll rustle up a copy and mail it to you. Did you get the plans from Mike
B. in Maine? If so, for no additional charge, I'll send along a set of former
templates that I have drawn up on my PC and then plotted. I find it easiest to
cut them up and stick them to the balsa or ply with 3M 77 and then cut out the
part. This way I don't have to trash the plans and I can run a new copy of any
given part as needed.
As for progress, Steve and I have all but two formers cut out and the sides and
bottom are joined up. Tonight we finish the formers.

| Randy, the "other" A10 was out at the field yesterday. Its
all framed up and he's starting planking. I didn't get over to
look at it, since I knew it wasn't yours and I was too busy
flying (or what passes for flying with the 4-cycle in my PT).

| A guy in our club (Harper Daniel) has copied the plans and is making an
A10 with a .61 in the nose rather than ducted fans. I've seen it a couple of
times. We should have both at the meeting Tuesday nite for a side-by-side
comparison.

| Well, this may become a scale project, as in lots of scale details.
I have spoken with and received information from Sunset Models (the
folks I ordered the kit from), Jet Hangar Hobbies, and Century Jet
Models.
They all convinced me that the Turbax I and K&B 9101 combination is the
"sweet" setup for this particular plane. I placed my order with Sunset
yesterday for two (2) complete power units (engines, fans, special
short tuned pipe, misc. items).
Buzz, Sunset's owner, also informed me of a set of weapons and pylons
being manufactured for the plane by Eagle Aviation; a full depth scale
cockpit in the works by DCU, and another manufacturer that already
produces a 1/9 scale full-length pilot.
Yes, I'm am a full-fledged A-10-aholic!
Does anyone have the number for A-10's Anonymous?

No but I should be a member of it also. If your ever in the Maynard area
please stop in - I would love to show you the "paper" A10 kit I
have flying over my desk. It took the better part of two weeks of
evenings to complete but I really like the results. I've been saving
plans for smaller ones over the years and I saw a fellow fly one
with a OS .32 heli engine as a tractor in the nose and he used butterfly
valves in the engine nacelles as air breaks. It worked wonderful. He
promised to finish the plans and release to a magazine but it never happened.
A few years ago we use to always see A-10's flying thru the hills near
Greenfield but somebody must of complained because I understand they moved
that type of training up to Vermont now. The A-10's were based at
Barnes Airport in Springfield for the Massachusetts Air National Guard.
The sign when you drive in says "A-10 Country".
Pat and I were at an air show one time and during a brief rain hiding under
the wing of an F111 to keep dry an experienced Air Force sergeant who
has to go to many air shows said from experience that when it rains
you NEVER want to duck under an A-10 wing. He said they have so many
lumps and bumps and holes in them for hi-lift devices etc. that the rain
seems to come thru from all over and you do get wet!
Good luck - keep us posted.
Bye --+--
