1234.0. "New England Scale Masters Qualifier" by SA1794::TENEROWICZT () Mon Jul 30 1990 07:45

This past weekend I attended (as a spectator) the New England
Scale Masters Qualifier. It was held this year at Barnes Airport
in Westfield,Ma. I saw Kevin and Kay there and will expect a detailed
reoprt of their activities. I watch two flights of Kevin's Jug
on Sat. and she seemed to fly excellently. One other Jug was in
attendence a D-40 model. Interetsing to me because it was detailed
after the scheme I'm planning to use on mine. On Sat. everything
went well with no crashes. There were quite a few passes or
zero rounds. I was hoping to see a B25 fly but it didn't log even
    one round.
On Sunday there were two crashes. The first was a Waco that
snapped after the engine went lean. This plane seemed to be under
-powered to begin with. The second was a Decathelon that did a
figure 9 as it's last flight option.

    	OK Kay,Kevin What Happened??

1234.187 REQUALIFIED FOR '90 AT ST. LOUIS IN '89...UPWARD::CASEYATHE DESERT RAT (I-RC-AV8) 551-5572Mon Aug 20 1990 17:3825
    Re: last-2, Dave,

The top-5 finishers get automatic reinvitations for the following
year's Masters. Additionally, the model(er)s selected as best Military
and Best Civilian get automatic invites regardless of finish positions.
This makes a total of 7 that will be reinvited as the result of a given
Masters Championship. _Everyone_ else must requalify by placing within
the top 5 or top 30%, whichever is smaller, at a subsequent qualifier.
(Note that there have been changes/revisions to this over the years but
the top-5 have always received reinvitations.)

As to the Being Last Sucks T-shirt, it _is_ a fact that no one
remembers anything except who finished 1st and who finished last.
(For example, name the flyer who was "second" to fly solo across the
Atlantic.) In '87 when Diego Lopez went out early with badly damaged
landing gear on his Baker P-38, he actually "campaigned" for the BLS
T-shirt, citing the philosophy quoted above. I'm kind'a like Kevin in
wanting to _avoid_ this honor(?) but they _do_ have a lot of fun with
it and it's not meant to be derogatory in the least.

i got my masters invite last night in the mail last night. the
original invite must've got lost cause the one i got had the
correct address (but .15 cents postage due, will have to rib
harris about that). i've filled out the stuff and should have
it back in the mail including picture tomorrow am.

this weekend i gambled saturday and went funflying with the other
hta's (i'm sortof an hta outcast cause non of my ships are grossly
overpowered 8^) ). had a great time, but with sunday rainy, i
didnt get any jug flying in. sunday i fiddled with retracts. after
much searching i found the airleak, its in the byron double air
cylinder. i think the o-rings have shrunk or something. perhaps
i lubricated them with something incompatible. anyways they look
ok but awful tiny. might just call byrons and order o-rings if i
can and/or a whole new valve just in case. but first i'll try local
hw store. i tried re-oiling and reinstalling but 1 of the 4 (same
one) still didnt seal. also played with shims on retracts to get
them to open to correct angle. they've always not opened quite
enough, not nearly so bad as a fw190 but the struts werent quite
    vertical.

maybe today sue made holiday inn reservations.

    thanks for the well-wishes tom!
