679.0. "Tiger Moth and other Lepidoptera" by UPWARD::CASEYA (THE DESERT RAT (I-RC-AV8)) Tue May 08 1990 17:51

Saw an interesting little flick last evening in the time slot usually
reserved for kiddie-stuff on the cable movie channels. Filmed in
Sydney, this charming little Australian piece is titles "Tail of the
Tiger" and stars no one any of us outside Oz would be likely to
    recognize.

The story revolves around a youngster named [appropriately enough]
Orville who is just plain nutz about airplanes but is shunned by an
older group of bullies who fly R/C models. (Some R/C flying is shown
but nothing out of the ordinary.) Orville builds a nice plastic model
of a deHavilland Tiger Moth and offers to show it to the bullies in
return for some stick time on an R/C plane. Predictably, the bullies
trash Orville's model and refuse him any time on their R/C models.

Devastated, Orville begins picking through the junk outside an
abandoned flour mill and, eventually, finds himself exploring inside
whereupon he discovers a 1:1 Tiger Moth in a serious state of
disrepair. An old reprobate who's caretaker of the mill claims to own
the wreck and runs poor Orville off but he's persistant and eventually
convinces the old man to restore the Tiger to flying condition.

Through several trials and a few more tribulations, they finally
succeed in getting the old Moth into flying shape and the
much-persecuted Orville gets to laud it over the now envious bullies as
he goes up with the old man in the Tiger Moth but, not being the
malicious type, answers the head bully, Spike's, question by allowing
that he can have a ride in "Orville's plane" once the bugs are worked
    out.

I found I could relate to Orville quite a bit as I was always taking my
latest models to school looking for acceptance but frequently receiving
scorn instead. And, I had a group of older kids down at the end of the
street who, while not bullies, were only slightly more encouraging than
the jeering kids at school. But, I now take great pleasure in the
knowledge that I eventually came to outbuild and outfly them all and am
regarded as something of a guru by the two or three of them who are
still around and still into modelling. Like Orville, my day of
vindication came and it was/is delicious!

If not destined for movie-classicdom, Tail of the Tiger, nevertheless
is a harmless, entertaining way to spend an hour and a half if you
should spot it in your cable listings.

Does anyone have any experience/knowledge with Pilot kits?
Specifically their scale kits, especially the Tiger Moth kits?

I've heard they're good quality and well engineered, but tend to
be on the heavy side. I'm not looking for super duper scale fidelity
at this point, but want somthing that looks about right, and will
have a fighting chance to fly well.

Also, what about the English Premier kit of the Tiger Moth, as sold
    by Hobby Lobby?

679.6SECOND-HAND INFO ON PILOT TIGER MOTHPNO::CASEYATHE DESERT RAT (I-RC-AV8)Tue Feb 27 1990 13:5414
    Terry,

I have no personal knowledge of either kit brand you mention. However,
a friend from California, Jim Morrow, has flown a Tiger Moth for years
which I'm pretty sure came from a Pilot kit and it's excellent...flies
well and statics right up there near the top. I couldn't comment on
how much extra Jim may've had to do to the kit but the result was/is a
    _very_ nice model.

See Al Casey's description of "Tail of the Tiger" in note 680.35.
This is a must see flick if you are building (or thinking about building)
a Tiger Moth.

Anyway - I recorded it and will send the tape out to the first one who asks
since I have it right here at my desk now. But I request if you want it
please post a reply here and along with getting it first you can own the
responsibility of any further distribution and final return to me. Course
if you want you can keep it and send me a blank tape. Anyway first to
do this wins.

679.2NOT SURE BUT.....UPWARD::CASEYATHE DESERT RAT (I-RC-AV8)Mon Jun 25 1990 11:2420
    Alton,

It's been awhile since I saw "The Aviator" (I assume we're talking
about the flicck with Christopher Reeve and Roseanna Arquette) so I
don't recall offhand what aircraft they were flying...it almost seems
like they were using Stearmans for the mailplanes.

However, if you're interested in the Stampe (pronounced Stom-pee), take
a peek at "The High Road to China" with Tom Selleck and Beth Armstrong.
Two Stampe's named "Dorothy" and "Lillian" (after the Gish sisters of
filmdom, I assume) figure prominently in the story and are seen in
numerous aerial and ground shots throughout the movie. BTW, this movie
has been playing on the cable movie channels lately...I just watched it
    again yesterday.

Stampe et V???? was the Belgian agency for de Havilland and its most
popular model (SV4B) was an "improvement" of the DH Tiger Moth. The basic
differences are 4 ailerons and different shape tail surfaces. Otherwise
    it looks exactly the same.

Don't ask me what a Tiger Moth looks like!!!!

679.4AHA! SO _THAT'S_ IT.......UPWARD::CASEYATHE DESERT RAT (I-RC-AV8)Tue Jun 26 1990 11:3319
    Re: .-2, Tony,

Thanx fer' that insight into the Stampe. That explains why I never
really knew when I was looking at a Stampe, always thinking it was a
Tiger Moth. Not being intimate with the nuances of the Moth, I can see
now why that's an easy mistake to make. I _did_ notice that the
external tank on the upper wing center-section is missing on the Stampe
but, knowing there were many Moth versions, just chalked it off.

BTW, the Stampes used in "The High Road to China" had the cowling
flattened off in front as opposed to the nicely rounded/streamlined
cowling of the Tiger Moth. Is this standard Stampe or were the movie
    planes modified for some reason?
