681.0. "SIG EASY HINGES-INFO PLEASE" by USRCV1::BLUMJ () Mon Aug 29 1988 17:46

    Has anyone used SIG EASY HINGES before? Are they strong and flexible?
    Any info. would be appreciated. I witnessed a Klett hinge break
    which was one of three holding the rudder onto the fin of a 122"
    scratch built glider which had landed a little hard after the initial
    hand launch to test if it was properly balanced. The builder and
    flyer(my father) was understandably disgusted. These new SIG hinges
    seem unbreakable and foolproof, however so did the KLETT hinges!

    Thanks,

    Jim

681.1I THINK THAT'S COVERED SOMEWHERE(?).........PNO::CASEYATHE DESERT RAT (I-RC-AV8)Mon Aug 29 1988 18:3113
    Jim,

    I have no personal experience with these hinges but have heard of
    some of the locals experiencing failures with them (hinge, not glue
    failure). That's just hearsay on my part but there's a note somewhere
    in here that talks to hinges including, I believe, this variety
    of hinge. Try typing DIR/TITLE="*HINGE*" and see if it turns up.

    Anyone know where I can find some Radio South Hinges, either small
    or medium size? I understand the new Goldberg Easy Hinges are very
    similar, but I can't find those either.

Maybe were not talking about the same thing but I use SIG Easy Hinges.
I love them. In fact I used 6 last night. Most hobby shops have them.
McManus was temporarily out last time I checked and I ended up buying
some at a great hobby shop in Mesa Arizona. Boy am I rambling.
I think what you want is SIG brand.

    Sig, Goldberg, what ever, yeah, those are the ones I'm talking about.
    Couldn't find either, and I've checked 4 hobby shops this week.
    I'm not in a super rush, as they are for my Sport-Air 40. Once I
    learn to fly the Trainer 40 I'll be ready for this bird. It just
    gives me something to work on in the shop. Sort of a replacement
    for the departed Pilgrim-2.

    I'm supprised that you are having a problem finding them at tha
    ol local. Munchners ( not sure spelled right) mail order carries
    them. Find them in AMA or RCM.

681.3Yes, Easy hinges do work!WILKIE::CRANDALLTue Aug 30 1988 12:0713
    I have the SIG Easy Hinges in my Kadet MK II. They seem to work
    great! Very easy to install. Cut a slot, insert the hinge, add
    a few drops of CA, and you're done.

    Flexibility no problem. They do have a little stiffness, but I believe
    it is negligible compared to wind loading.

    I can't say how long they will last. They seem pretty tough, but
    over the long, I don't know... My plane is still pretty new;
    about twenty flights. It's had couple of tumbles, but no bad crashes.
    So far, the hinges seem like new.

                I have used them on all airplanes built over the last
        year. Never had a failure and it's infinitely easier to make a
        correctly aligned and gapless hinge joint with them. I'll never
        go back to the old horrible kind again.

    They're great!

    I've used them on 3 planes (2 that are flying, one retired) and
    have had zero problems.

    They're quick and easy. I'll stick with 'em!

    The verdict on Sig Easy Hinges seems to be thumbs up! Thanks for
    the input, I will be using them on my 4-meter Algebra. They really
    do seem like a good idea. Thanks again.

681.7will they work on the big birds??DNEAST::MALCOLM_BRUCMon Feb 10 1992 16:0512

    I have used these on the last three planes that I have and there great.
    Will they work on a 1/5 or 1/4 scale plane or should I do something
    different?? I hate to use something else.

    I'm building a Royal Pitts Special 2 that is 1/5 scale I love these
    hinges but I don't want any kind if failure to happen. Is it wise to
    use them on such a big plane??

    Thanks for any help!!

Well a pattern has been forming in the notes about Sig Easy Hinges. Some
guys love them (I do) and some say they are accidents about to happen.
It looks like they work fine on small low performance stuff and that
perhaps on larger or faster stuff they tend to fail. Much as I like them
I think if I was building a BIG Pitts I would find another hinge method.

Check out the hinges on your front door :-)

Just kidding - but look into hinges that are sized and stressed for Giant
Scale.
681.9More hinges....CSC32::CSENCSITSMon Feb 10 1992 18:518
    I too like the Sig hinges...I've used them on every plane that I built.
    The bigger the plane the more hinges I use. My Sunbird 120 and Super
    Sportster 120 had 5 hinges per aileron. I can actually pick up the
    planes by one elevator. The secret seems to be let the thin ca soak in
    SLOWLY.
