645.1 | You could modify the charger | LEDS::WATT | | Tue Aug 09 1988 17:24 | 11 |
| Dave,
One way you could do this would be to cut the end off of the
charger and put a connector on it to mate back to the charger.
Then you could this as an adapter to connect to an 049 glow connector.
An alternative is to use a single sub c nicad as the power source
for the 049 glow plug. You will need a cable between the battery
and the connector instead of being able to hang the thing directly
on the glowplug.

I haven't been seeing them lately but i've seen ads for an 049 head that was
tapped to take a standard glow plug. Don't remember where I saw it but it
was one of the major mags...

645.3 | home made NiStarter for the .049 | RICKS::MINER | Electric = No more glow-glop | Wed Aug 10 1988 13:59 | 33 |
| RE: < Note 643.5 by OPUS::BUSCH >
Dave,
What I did for my .049 was to buy a pair of standard C size NiCad
batteries with charger (for household applications - mine's the GE
brand). Then I took an old 35mm film canister (the little plastic
"can" the film comes in) and wired in the standard COX .049 clip.
The C battery just fits in the film canister and I now have a fairly
fuel proof, rechargeable NiStarter for an .049. I also carry the
(fully charged) second battery in another film canister just in case
the one I'm using goes dead at the field. No field charging - just
swap the C cells and GO!!
If you want to have a look at mine, just let me know. I plan on
using the same technique for the standard glow plug clip I'll use on
my new O.S. .25.
If you really want an adapter for your current orange NiStarter,
take an old burnt out glow plug and wire on your COX glow clip where
the plug's wire coil was. Just plug this assembly into the
NiStarter and you're ready to go...

| re .-2 By Glenn "049 head that was tapped to take a standard glow plug"
I had recently looked for one of these without success. The 12/90 issue
of Model Builder has an ad on page 97 for glow head adapters for the
COX 049/051, 09, and 15. The supplier is
Charlie's R/C Goodies 805-581-5061
2828 Cochran St. Suite 281
Simi Valley, CA 93065
Prices including shipping are all under $5.
Although I am now inclined to simply drill and tap an old head.
