396.1 | EASY TO SPOT SCHNEURLE..... | GHANI::CASEYA | THE DESERT RAT (I-RC-AV8) | Thu Dec 10 1987 10:17 | 24 |
| Kay,
Can't really help you by means of the nomenclature [I never have
completely figgered' out O.S.'s system] but you can tell if it's
schneurle ported at a glance...if the intake port casting on the
left side of the case [opposite exhaust] is very pronounced, almost
exaggerated, the engine is schneurle ported; if this part of the
case casting is, conversely, very slightly raised from the surrounding
case area, it is coventionally scavenge-ported. (This applies to
virtually any make of engine.) If memory serves, the "Blackhead" .60
was the last conventional-ported .60 O.S. made [nearly 10 years ago]
and all subsequent engines have been schneurle ported.
BTW, I always thought "FSR" meant "F"ront intake, "S"ide exhaust,
and I forget what the "R" meant. Unfortunately, this doesn't give
me a clue as to what "FGR" might mean, except for the fact that
it's front intake and I "still" don't know what "R" stamds for.
:-)
Maybe yer' question will evoke a response defining O.S.'s lettering
nomenclature system. That'd be great...can anyone provide such
info???

396.2 | could this be the missing link? | MDVAX1::SPOHR | | Thu Dec 10 1987 11:57 | 3 |
| I think the "R" in FSR is for Rotary Valve.

396.3 | HMMMM, COULD BE..... | MAUDIB::CASEYA | THE DESERT RAT (I-RC-AV8) | Thu Dec 10 1987 12:46 | 8 |
| Chris,
Maybe, but I always thought of rotary as referring to rear intake.
I could be mistaken though as rotary could mean as opposed to reed
valve as is used in most Cox engines. In that context, rotary valve
could apply to either front or rear intake which "does" seem logical.

396.4 | Definite maybe | MDVAX1::SPOHR | | Thu Dec 10 1987 17:49 | 6 |
| Al,
I think that's correct, because FS designates 4-stroke so the "R"
says "2-stroke" cuz' they don't use conventional valves.
Yuk,yuk,

396.5 | OS engine code | STRINE::CHADD | Go Fast; Turn Left | Thu Dec 10 1987 18:34 | 23 |
| Well amongst my useless information file I may be able to help.
The H60F GR is a loop scavenge side exhaust helicopter engine of the 1974-75
vintage. This model was also known as the Black Head. This model was the follow
on from the GP model of the 1968 vintage and was the last model pre Schnerl
porting. Some spares are still available.
I have done some research and have now found that SR donates Schnerl Racing
(ie. 40SR) and had a side exhaust rear intake configuration. This was really the
first performance OS engine and was dated in the mid 70's. The follow on from
this was the 60FSR which used the first of the FSR series.
FSR stands for Front induction Schnerl Racing. A progression from this was the
RSR as in 60RSR M, this was a Rear intake Schnerl Racing engine, the difference
to the straight SR was that the SR had a venturi and no carburetor.
The V series of OS engine was for the rear exhaust engines like the 61VF. The
new engines OS are producing the FP which stands for Front intake Plain
bearings.
That about cover's the main line of OS.

396.6 | SO "THAT'S" HOW IT WORKS........ | GHANI::CASEYA | THE DESERT RAT (I-RC-AV8) | Fri Dec 11 1987 09:33 | 9 |
| John,
Gracias fer' the info. I was inclined to think the "R" of FSR stood
for something other than rotary and yer' data in .-1 confirms that.
I couldn't rationalize why O.S. would identify rotary induction
as opposed to reed valve since, to the best of my knowledge, they
have never produced a reed inducted engine. Gracias again.

OK great. What about this engine makes it made for helicopters?
I assume that all OS Black Heads were not Helo engines - right?
