247.0. "PT20 ENGINE SIZE" by DARTH::GAROZZO () Wed Aug 05 1987 14:52

     I HAVE A PT20 THAT I PLAN TO FINISH COVERING THIS WEEK. I HAVE
    AN ENYA 15 ON IT. THE PLANS CALL FOR A 15-20 SIZE ENGINE, SO I THINK
    I'M IN THE BALLPARK WITH ENOUGH POWER. FELLOW FLYERS AT THE CLUB
    TELL ME THAT A 15 IS NOT ENOUGH FOR THE PT20 AND THAT IT REALLY
    NEEDS A 25-30 SIZE ENGINE. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY RECCOMENDATIONS
    ON THIS?

    THANKS,
    BOB G.

    Your best rule of thumb here is to always put the largest engine
    that will fit or the largest one recommended by the manufacturer
    (whichever applies) in your model. The rationale here is the old
    cliche (which is dead accurate) "You can ALWAYS throttle-back but
    you can NEVER throttle-up if you're already firewalled!"

    Take the advise of your fellow modelers, use the .25 - .35 engine.

    I think you should do as Al Casey suggested in the previous reply.
    I am currently at the same point with my PT40. I already have an
    O.S. 40 FSR to go in it. I chose the PT40 over the PT20 because
    I wanted something larger (for visibility), however the PT40 has
    only about an 8 inch larger wingspan. I have been studying the
    PT40 at the local club's airfield for some time now. It appears
    to be slower than other trainers even with maximum engine displacement.
    If the PT20 is anything like the PT40, you'll want to put as much power
    up front as allowable. Like Al said,"you can always throttle back"!

    Good flying,

247.3Get A FOX BZERKR::DUFRESNEVAX Killer - You make 'em, I break 'emWed Aug 05 1987 23:527
    Get a FOX 19 BB RC, put a 9-5 prop on it, feed it RED MAX 10%
    Locate battery, tank & servo per plan. The CG should come out right on
    the money. The plane will have plenty of power to do anything you care
    to try. (include nosing into the dirt, if that's your bag..)

    ENYA, OS, K&B.. grumble, grumble.. I think you guys are overlooking
    a damn good power plant by ignoring the FOX...

    I have to agree with with this. I had a rather obscure K&B .40 in
    my Train-Air 40, ( I say obscure 'cause I have no idea how old it
    is) that I replaced with a Fox .40 BB. I now fly at 1/3rd throttle
    as opposed to full throttle with the K&B. They is one powerful engine!
