I was watching the weather channel on 1-1-1992, and right after the
usual footage of the "Polar Bear Club" taking its swim on New Years
Day, there were several action shots of some waterskiers doing their
version of the same. Noticed were what appeared to be icey patches in
one scene, with that skier doing a two-ski beach start, standing in the
skis in sand (or was it snow?) and wearing a rubber suit. Another skier
was shown on 2 skis doing great wake-crossing action, with the water's
edge solidly covered with snow. This guy was really nuts: he was only
wearing enough clothing to make his appearance legal. Well, maybe more
than enough, but it was only a set of trunks! I can't recall the actual
locations of these separate shots, but judging by the lack of prior
entries, I guess it wasn't in the GMA...
938.2DONVAN::DECAROLISNo ProblemoThu Jan 02 1992 16:359

Yep...I saw that too. A skier was pulled off the ice, into
the water, he was on two skiis and wearing shorts! I thought
the guys was nuts! I believe those pictures were taken in
Minnesota. The skiers gave me the impression of being show
skiers, maybe they were with the Aqua Jays.

938.4Annual Bitch/Moan/Video Party ?CSLALL::JEGREENCuz I luv that [icy] dirty waterWed Jan 08 1992 12:4123
I've sort of volunteered to host the annual winter waterskiers'
bitch/moan/video party this year. Just an informal gathering of people
who would like to complain about the cold weather, dream about what
kind of toys they'd buy if money were no object, make excuses for last
years performance, etc. If I understand it correctly, a requirement is
that you watch Hot Rockin' Feet videos until you know every frame by
heart. :^) I don't have any videos to show but I do have a TV/VCR if
anyone has tapes to bring. Maybe Doug could bring his video of Roger
doing some face-skiing off the boom [failed attempts at hand-skiing],
    :^).

I live in Haverhill Ma, 1.5 miles off rte 495. It's about 45 minutes
from Hudson MA, 30 minutes from Nashua NH, and 3.6 light years from
    N. Grafton. Assuming there is enough interest, would people prefer
a weeknite, a Friday nite, or maybe a Sunday afternoon. Spouses are
welcome. If you're interested send me mail @ CSLALL::JEGREEN, and pick
a preferred day between Jan. 20-Feb. 9, for starters. I'll make up a
distribution list of interested parties and work the details off line.

Hey Jeff...looks like my name got lost in the 3.6 lightyear inter-galactic void
between Haverhill and N. Grafton! :-) I haven't received any mail regarding the
mid-winter party. I know it may be tough to remember, but my network address is
ROGER::GAUDET. Pretty slick, eh? That was intended to make it *easy* to
remember (plus I was *damn* lucky). Anyway, no biggie, 'cuz Doug called me to
give me the details. We'll let it slide this time! :-) So I guess the current
rumor is Feb. 6th, right? I'll make sure my mother-in-law has had her pictures
from our vacation developed so I can bring along my picture with "Ambassador
George."

Geez, Rog, I was thinking the same thing. What part of the OPEN invitation
didn't you understand ? :^) I was beginning to take it personally but I knew
it was just a mis-understanding on *your* behalf! Either way, you are most
welcome (and encouraged) to attend the gala event. Bring your pictures of your
Florida vacation, and any video-tapes you have.

Yes, there has in fact been a date selected, and the day is..

Thursday night, February 6 ! A weeknight was easier for most people with
family obligations, or family_to_be_obligations. :^)

I'll send out directions later to the people that have expressed interest
in attending (Yes, Roger, that includes you!) I'm looking forward to it.

I, errr, got a phone call yesterday from one "Joe DelGenio"
It seems he knows a nice little lake down somewhere near the cape and
he was wondering if I would kinda like to.......
Supposedly it doesn't have the current (& trash) of the Merrimac
river, but rarely freezes ......hmmmmmm hope its because its fed by
a natural spring or something 'harmless'. Its about 3/4 hour from
Marlborough.

Anyone interested, say this coming week-end ?

my desk trying to warm up BEFORE I read your invite. Think I'll

And BTW, how fast does that diesel Suburban go to make it from

It wasn't all *that* bad back on December 8th. My fingers were fine as
long as I kept them out of the water. After a couple of crash_and_burn

re: the towing speed of the diesel; I don't know, the 3/4 hour was
Joe's estimate - he was offering to use his truck as his half of the
day's expenses if I provide the boat - dunno why he thought mine
wouldn't be winterised ??? Anyway, I think I'll get the boat
registered this week just in case. Wouldn't want game wardens

Its been in the mid to upper 50s for a number of days now. From what
people have said, it probably broke 60 today. Of course, if things
go like they usually do, it will be sub-zero this weekend if I plan
anything. It would be nice to get the engine broken in before the
season starts (or has it already started :-) ). I was going to work
Saturday, but if the weather looks good, I could be talked out of it.
Or, I could go down around Noon Sunday.

Well I've been getting somewhat of a "fix" this winter
by being pulled around the lake behind an ice-boat.
If you dig in with your skates and cut hard, you can
accelerate up to 50/60 MPH and out-skate the ice-boat.
Quite the thrill! Nice and dangerous too.

If it's really windy out on the lake, we hook up

Well,Wayne and I went to Pueblo on Sat. It was not as warm as the
weather-man predicted(it never is)but was nice enough for us to cruise
around the lake with short sleeve shirts on. To get out of the
marina, which is in a cove,we had to bust through some ice. After that
we were convinced the Brendella hull had what it takes to make it out
    here in Colorado! :-)

I could still feel the tenderness in my ankle when I crossed the wakes
so I had to take it easy. Wayne should of because he fell alot into
    that cold-frigid water. :-0

Really, the water was quite tolerable with the Sahara dry-suits by Ski
Warm. We wore hoods, cold water gloves, and warmed our feet with the
    hot-water shower.

It is a good thing we went when we did because the weather is going
through some changes for the worse as I type. They are predicting snow
and wind chills in the minus 30's tonight.

    until the next warm spell,

938.25Its not how warm the water is, its how smooth.BAJA::THORSTEDIn search of smooth water...Wed Feb 05 1992 00:1910
Come on Matt, I only fell once (once too often). My big mistake was taking off
the ski too soon. Those few seconds waiting for the boat were enough to start
hurting the toes. The hot water shower was worth every penny. We really messed
up by not taking the video camera. It would have been a great shot with us
skiing next to the ice line in the cove. Dana was trying to figure out how to
barefoot up onto the ice.

Great fun, and it wasn't crowded except for the specators :-)

I would say that if it is almost 50 degrees,we aught to go for it. I am
going up to Water Ski Specialty on 9116 W.88th Ave. Westminster on Sat

I think the "NAME THAT NOTE" trivia contest should be a routine part of
the midwinter gathering; For those of you that weren't there, the
significance of the impeller in a Zip-loc back is the "Mike Smith
method" of winter storage of impellers:
       1) Remove impeller
       2) Pack in antifreeze
       3) Store in freezer
       4) Throw away in the spring :^)
    Or something to that effect...

it did snow last night. Hopefully, it will get back up in the 60s

I'll let Matt give you the Rocket report. I think I'll pull out my new Concept

John, I know how you feel about being lost with all the new equipment
and terminology out there. When I was learning to ski, skiis were
nothing put a couple of flat pieces of plywood with upturned fronts.
The boat was a little wooden thing with a big, fat Evinrude that
only had 40 HP and couldn't get out of it's own way never mind get
me up out of the water. Slalom skiing was out of the question cause
you would sink up to your knees because you were going so slow.
Now everyone needs two speedometers to keep exact speeds and
different skiis for different conditions, etc. I was looking at the
new Overton Water Sports Catalog last night. I can't believe the
choices one has in equipment today. Maybe I should just find an
old pair of wooden skiis so I can blame my poor skiing on them!

OK, who's gonna be the founder of the Antique Water Ski Club?

Recently I was talking with someone who said he learned to ski
behind a boat with something like a 15 or 20 hp outboard. I
asked how that could be, when today's outboards of 40 or 50 hp
    will barely pull a skier.

    There are apparently a few reasons;
    - People used much smaller and lighter boats back then
    - *WE* were smaller and lighter
    - But the primary reason, is that skis were much *BIGGER*, some of
'em about the size of a small toboggan and would plane easily at
      not much more than 10mph.

My parents have home movies from the early 60's of my Dad riding
behind a small boat on a flat plywood board about 30" wide, and 6'
long with a rounded nose, and it looked like he was having an
    absolute blast!
938.58New gear needs powerBUFFER::WILSONTue Mar 03 1992 13:5022
    re .57

New skis and under powered boats do not mix. Old skis and powerful
    boats are probably OK.

I tried skiing behind a neighbor's boat that had an Evinrude 60.

It pulled hard enough to get me partially out of the water, just about
the stage where you get the maximum pulling force, but would not
    accelerate. Out went my back.

The herniated disc caught up with me in November as it pinched the
sciatic nerve. Could not walk for a month. Back surgery in December
got me back on my feet. Not sure if I will ski this season or if ever
again. Have to check with the Doc.

I felt really stupid as I had just purchased a 15" prop for my boat
that would pop heavy skiers out of the water before they new it. Some
of the readers may recall skiing behind the boat with a 17" and 19".

938.59today's selection..WOW!COMET2::KLEINMNOTHING IS TOO EXTREMEWed Mar 04 1992 00:0431
I often see water skiers who are too caught up in the latest and
greatest equipment on the water. I was too young to get a chance at
the wooden age of slalom skiis but my first fiberglass ski did not
compare much to today's vast offerings. It was very unforgiving and
catered to the serious skier(bevels,rocker,etc.). Today, depending on
your skill level and style, you can find a ski that complements YOU.

Getting back to my first sentence....There are too many people out
there who insist on buying a connelly Rocket just because it is the
hottest new stick out there when they would probably benefit from
a Legend or something not quite so stiff and sensitive. Education and
demo programs are very vital to the person purchasing new $400-$700
    skiis in today's overwhelming market.

If you choose the right equipment now a days, you will improve at a
    remarkable rate,whethor novice or EP.

Always take a test drive.......that is my motto.

and find a dealer who knows how to adjust the fins. They can make
    all the difference.

And take a hammer to the foil unless you are skiing 36/22 or shorter
in the course. I know that I will hear arguments on the foil issue
but I feel that if you do not learn how to properly decelerate without
the foil, your progress with one will be very limited.

    until next time,

Maybe there will be a section later on about overloading the

The final chapter reminds the wood_B skier that the boat

OK Reg, you've hinted (and quite strongly, I might add) about this wood project,

I won't have the chainsaw until Sunday when I'll be in R.I.

the way back. It sure is nice having the lake close enough to take a long lunch

This month's Waterski mag has some good articles on
technique, including one-handed turns. I like the stills-
I'll be videotaping myself to see how good I look!

On a related topic, there was a review of some skiis, one
of which I have (O'Brien Z). O'Brien (and others) design
this type of ski for those who ride on the back of the
ski during turns. I do ok on this ski, but, while
I'm taping, what should I look for to decide what
type of skier I am?

how well you work your knees during the pre-turn.

    Matt
938.91Foreward,nuetral,or rear-weighted??COMET::KLEINMNOTHING IS TOO EXTREMEWed Mar 18 1992 00:3952
After thinking about the previous note that I entered,I remembered that
now a days, manufacturers are designing skis that are suppose to remain
more level in the water no matter what your style ie. foreward, nuetral
or back, that is if you are on the ski that complements YOUR style.

So, when reviewing a video tape of your skiing in SLOW MOTION,
check to see where your shoulders are in relation to your hips and
knees during acceleration. If you are a rear weighted skier, your
shoulders will be behind your hips if you were to draw a straight line
up from your bindings through your knees and hips. If you are a nuetral
skier, your shoulders will be right in line with your knees and hips,if
you are a foreward style skier in the acceleration phase you will go
out the front and perform daring aerobatic manuevers prior to getting
    slammed into the water.

In the deceleration phase,a foreward style skier will like to use a lot
of pressure with the knees and really drive the hips foreward to slow
the ski,he will feel a lot of weight on his front leg, kinda like
    Carl Roberge.

A nuetral skier decelerating will basically stay in the center of his
ski,not moving around much, his shifting of the knees alone help him
slow the ski for the turn,a nuetral skier looks the prettiest because
his body is so quiet throughout all phases.

A rear weighted skier will go into the deceleration phase with his
shoulders back and without a lot of bend in his knees,he will typically
go into the turn hotter and eithor hook it or come out late,he usually
has one hell of a pull going for him and can make up a lot of angle
through the wakes. This style is the most un-forgiving of all,but many
a skier can muscle his way through until the rope starts getting
shorter and he will find himself at a dead-end.

I am nuetral through the wakes and foreward in the deceleration phase.
The only problem with that is it can cause me to break at the waist
in the turn sometimes on my off side. To help prevent that I add a
little depth to the front of the fin but not so much that it hinders
the turning radius of the ski.

Once you find a ski that complements you through the wakes and in the
deceleration phase, some minor fin adjustments can help you set the ski
up to turn to your expectations. I have found that adjusting the fin
has helped my off side and that you should set it up to help YOUR OFF
SIDE turn rather than your good side.

Do all of this with out the foil on the ski as it is just another
variable that will only make your adjustments more difficult and your
    testing less accurate.

    Hope that helps,

    Matt

Yes, except novice spotters will sometimes do exactly the
wrong thing when the handle comes at THEM !

On Ft Meadow Pond alone last year a) someone supposedly
popped a handle and the rope/handle actually wrapped around the
driver's (his father) neck b) a young woman spotter got a very nasty
rope burn on her throat. c) I got hit a couple or three times, none
serious, but two were caused by very strong learners who were just
poking the skis straight up and holding on way too long.

> How about one of those fancy hi-back bucket driver's seats like
> one of the tournament boats has. Is it the Supreme?

I was thinking along the lines (pun) of a pole that somehow
attaches to the pylon, goes to about windshield height and carries a
T, from which a net is hung. Maybe the ends of the T would have lines
running to clips/clamps at the top corners of the winshield .... ???
All this would fold down for convenience, etc. OK, I'll time stamp
this note and copy it to my patent attorney (-:

Ski Centurion and American Skier both have meshed nets on the drivers
seat to catch flying handles, but its part of the seat. American Skier
as well as MC have nice full size nets. Trouble with them is that the
spotter/skier/driver rotation gets to be a hassle having to duck under
or around the net. A floor mounted net behind the drivers seat only
would protect the driver while not restricting movement about the cabin
    area. :^)

Nope, not at these forces. It seems to reduce some of the
loops that get thrown into the boat, but when there is enough energy
stored in a line it still hurls the handle to the windshield.
Two cases a) a heavy skier in the course at 36 MPH, 35 off
looses the handle at his max pull (by getting too much angle).
b) a strong beginner trying to come up behind the boat sticks the skis
straight up, develops the white knuckle death grip and eventually lets
go.

Reg, three possible solutions come to mind. One would be to make your
own by creating a square frame out of the legs of one of those cheap
shelf units that you can find on sale. Kinda looks like oversized
Erector set stuff. Then get a bunch of cheap bungie cords at your
local discount place (like Spags). Weave a pattern of interlocking
squares. Next, I've seen some cars (Ford Taurus?) that come with a
elastic mesh cargo hold-down net with hooks at the four corners. Again,
make your own frame. Lastly, I thought I saw something in the last
Overton's catalog that attaches to the rope itself to stop spring back.
Last thought. They also make a big cargo net for the back of pick-up
truck beds. You could go from the top of the windshield to the stern
of the boat. It would restrict movement but you'ld be well protected!

    	Awesome afternoon yesterday!

A few checks for leaks in the new shower system and Jackie, Reg,
Jeff and myself stirred up the waters of the Merrimack in Lowell,
yesterday. Just after launching the boat, I had to remove the top of
my wetsuit because it was too hot! Yes, you heard (read) Correct-ly,
when the sun was shining, it was too hot to wear the top of my wetsuit.
Ah what a feeling to drive the boat *without* a shirt!

Jackie was up first, of course since she has been skiing for nearly
a month, it was now "old-hat" to her.

Reg was next clad in his wild purple wetsuit. Jackie says; "Look at
him go, he's skiing as if the water *isn't* cold!". Gee where'd that
    tripperfish come from?

Me, is it my turn? Am I actually going to get *in* the water. Well,
if I don't want to hack up my new ski on the beach I am. It can't
be that bad. Actually it wasn't. The water certainly didn't numb
everything like it did several weeks ago. Also, warm water in my suit
and my bindings didn't hurt either.

We were just about to check and see if Tyngsboro had removed a
Pontiac we spotted on a previous outing from the river, when we noticed
a Blazer paked on the ramp.

Jeff's here! Must be his turn.... haha He looked really good on
his fancy Kidder Redline, especially for his first ski of the year.

Gee, is there a pattern here? 4 skiers, 3 Kidder skis....

Temps are supposed to remain mild thru the weekend. I plan on
attending the Sunday Cleanup and do some skiing. I'll probably be
    there Saturday also. any takers?

6 days in Alabama, waterskiing and golfing over the Easter weekend.

My partents have a place on Lake Guntersville, in Guntersville, AL.
It's an hour outside of Huntsville , AL. next to nowhere-ville.
It is a 24 mile dam'ed/locked portion of the Tennessee River.
The water temps were 68-70 degress, air temps were about 80 degrees
and sunny. :-) I got in three days of skiing and 3 rounds of golf.
And let me tell you I was quite sore in the muscles after the first
three days of the season. It was quite enjoyable skiing without
a drysuit, booties, hood, and special gloves. I am now really psyched

938.130A serendipidous discovery ? perhaps.HYDRA::BURGESSSun Apr 26 1992 16:5118
I cleaned my boat up, a LOT (about time, I know).

Anyway, I washed and waxed and Armor_all'd just about
everything, then we went skiing. I have been using windex on my
bindings since last year, supposedly its better than slime and it
certainly washes out quickly, though I'm not convinced that the
ammonia is good for rubber. As I slipped into my ski I realized that
I was slipping in unusually smoothly and this was probably because in
my absent minded hurry to ski I had grabbed the wrong spray bottle.

So, has anyone else tried Armor_all as a ski binding lube ? (-:
It certainly lubes the binding very well and it seems to mostly wash
away with a few ankle wriggles by the time the line is tight. Its
claimed as a rubber, vinyl, etc. "protectant" so why not ?

938.131Won't washoutSONATA::SBAKERMon Apr 27 1992 08:5413
I have also tried armor all by accident also. I was using it on the
outside of my binding just to protect the rubbers. Got some on the
inside of the rear toe rubber and found that it wouldn't wash out. Had
to take soap and water and wash it out. Your right the stuff is as
slipery as sh*t, but won't washout. We have been using dishsoap in a
spray bottle but have been wondering about the efects on the rubber
also. I only got one year out of the front toe rubber on my Connelly
high wrap. The good news was when I called Overtons for the new rubber
instead of 29 $ it was only 5 $. I guess that it was known to be
defective. With the new front rubber I also ordered some binding slime
    seems to work good.
    Come on warm weather!

938.137binding care for calm daysCOMET::KLEINMTue Apr 28 1992 19:2752
I understood what one of the previous noters claimed about armour
all being very slippery when it rains. I made the gawd awful mistake
of putting it on my steering wheel one rainy April month not too long
ago. I had to wear my ski gloves to drive the boat. :-)

I made a comment about dish soap,I think the cheap stuff washes away
real quick and makes for an easy entry. One thing I would like to add
to that is,well,a couple of things:

If you use double high wraps, make sure they both feel the same.
If one comes out easier than the other, you have defeated the purpose
    of using them.

Use equal amounts of soap in both boots.

Tugging on the bindings not only tear the rubber but it also helps
cause the retention screws to work loose. If they work loose and you
ski long enough with them loose, the holes in the ski will wobble out.

When taking the ski off after skiing, grab the tip and pull it
towards you instead of kicking it off.

Some manufacturers use gel packs that conform to the sole of your
foot,so if you allow too many people to use your ski,the gel pack will
simply become squashed and will make the boot feel loose to you after
    a while.

When donning your ski,try to use your down-ward weight to enter
the boot rather than the pulling force used by your arms.

I have found it easier to put my rear foot in first and then your
    front. ???????????

Obviously, keep your boots out of the sun.

Try adjusting the overlays so that they conform to the top of your
foot. exam. on the boot that your left foot in,place the overlay that
goes from right to left on the bottom side, next to the actual binding
rubber. Itwill make for a more comfortable more secure fit.

Try to keep sand out of the binding parts too.

For a lot of you,it was a waste of time to read this but there may
be a few out there that are using high wraps for the first time and
I thought that a few pointers on taking care of them may prevent a
few costly repairs that I have made on customer's skis through the
    years.

b.t.w. I may give up skiing and take up windsurfing as that is the
only group of enthusiasts currently enjoying this Colowindo weather.

Wayne and I as well as a couple other tug boat owners try to set up
our skiing days so that we can share boats. For everyone but the person
taking the boat,it makes skiing very time efficient and conveinient.

Wayne takes his boat on Mon. and I take mine on Tues and so on.

Another great advantage to this method is that we ski with the same
people more often which allows each other to become aware of one
another's habits and style. Pointers can be given more frequently
and with more consistancy, everyone improves at a much greater rate

                   2 novice slalom tournaments
                   1 class C 3 round slalom tournament
and a Water sports festival where we have to do about
4 ski shows,a coupla barefoot exhibitions, and so forth.

                   and The National wakeboard championships.

I am the director and chief driver for one of the novice slalom
tournaments which will have handicap rules and a HEAD TO HEAD
FINALS round on the following day! We will even be using last
    year's Pro tour Mc's.

After all of this,I'll take a week off from skiing and go do
some farming in Iowa,I'll call it rest!

    guys,

It is caused by a form problem. If your rear knee is not tucked in
behind your front, the spray will catch it. As the season goes on,
you'll eithor get them cheeks pinched and the knees in a tucked
formation,or your calf will turn to leather and you won't notice
    it anymore. :-0

I agree with Matt. I used to wear a spray protector, but tossed it (actually,
my daughter uses it as a knee brace now) when I started skiing with better form
(e.g. back knee tucked in behind the front one.)
Now, I use it as a warning tha
my form is failing. If I get back to the dock and my calf is burning, I know to
work on tucking my knee in on the next set, and to bend those legs forward at the
ankles.

938.165MOOBA BOOMERANG MEANS FUN!COMET::KLEINMWhat do you mean I missed the gates?Thu Jun 18 1992 02:3027
A good friend of mine just bought a 1992 MOOMBA BOOMERANG.

It has the 285hp PCM PRO BOSS and it runs HARD.

The boat only weighs about 1900 lbs,and you can tell when you're
pulling short line slalom,I could feel it starting @ 28 off,but it
was'nt so bad that affected me adversely, but some rear end sliding
was apparent. The wakes were sweet,a bit asymmetrical, but very very
    low,soft,and flat.

Overall,I would recommend the boat to a first time buyer that wanted
a rocket on the water with low wakes for slalom skiing. It had plenty
of pickup and top speed for barefooting,no rooster tail what so ever,
a flat,non-turbulent table would also please.

Because of the asymetrical wakes,I could'nt recommend it for high
    point trickers.

This boat was very solid as well, handled wake crossing and chop
with the feel of a much larger boat, handling was swift, there was no
    vibrations or rattles anywhere.

If you are in the market for a new inboard that flies for around
    15 k,check out the Boomerang!

    Fellow ski buffs,
It was nice to find this note - I didn't know there were so many
    skiers in DEC.
We have a slalom course and a Nautique 75 minutes from either the
OTO or KAO site. Your discussions about boat traffic made me realize how
lucky we are. I can head up to the lake on a Wednesday night and the
3 of us in our group can still each get three passes in. On the other
hand, our season doesn't start till mid May and there's maybe a two week
period in July when the water isn't cold. Probably why the best skier
in our group has a condo in Ft. Meyers...
If any of you folks happen to be travelling to the great white
north, drop me a line. We enjoy taking new people out. A couple of
years ago I got tired of boring trips to Mass. and managed to smuggle
my ski onto the DEC charter flight (this thing? it's a 65" neon briefcase,
why do you ask?) and the Fort Meadow's group took me for a ski.
By the way, anybody do the labour day slalom tournaments in Albion,
Michigan or Indiana? I'm looking forward to those again, even though
my PB is where most of those skiers warm up at.

938.167two segment slalom course timing for '92COMET::KLEINMWhat do you mean I missed the gates?Fri Jun 19 1992 01:1725
Has anyone out there had any experiances with AWSA's new
timing rules for the slalom course?

You now have to time the driver as you would in a jump course.
There are now 2 seperate segments and both segments have to be
within tolerance no matter where the skier falls. The tolerances
    have also been tightened up.

To time for slalom now,you need to set your watch up in the Lap
    mode.

It's tough, before, you could be out in the split and bring er in
to tolerance before the exits and you were ok,now, even if the skier
makes the full course and the 1st segment was cold but the 2nd was
    good,it's a reride.

    good luck.

If you go to a tournament plan on about twice as many re-rides and
a much longer day at the site.

    Thanks awsa.

I agree with you Jeanne,I think Andy gave Kris the victory. The site
was where Kris had previously set a world record and he also had
commented that he would love to retire by winning a pro tour stop.
Everything fell into place real nice. Andy and Kris work together, ski
together, and design skis together @ O'Brien, they are good friends,
I would do that for a friend too if I was in Andy's dominant position.

How bout that Helena Kjellander? She is skiing smooth. Looked great.
wonder where Jennifer was? Bet Kristi Overton wishes now she would of

    He is skiing very smoothly.

I have an opportunity to take the "summer long celebrity water ski

per day and the instructor rotates out 3-4 people for a 45 min period
from 9:00-4:00. I was told if it rains your out of luck.

What I want to get out of the training is:

    1. the ability to deep water start with one ski
    2. improve my form and ability to stay on the ski

Unfortunately I do not have access to a good skier so for the past 3
years I have been teaching myself and reading about it. The time has

With the 285hp powerslot. It is black on white with teal accents.
She runs about 38-39 mph @ 6000 ft,and gets there quick and hard!!
It tracks better than last year's 190's and is quieter, less vibration.

WHat a wake,I mean, what wake? The cool thing is,it has a great trick
wake at 17 mph for me too! If they could reduce the rooster a tad at
    22 off,and the spray starting @ 28 off,it would be even sweeter.
To help it track better,we are going to shave the rudder just a ioda.

    Hey Matt,

A thank-you is in order... What you said some time ago about getting
rid of the spray leg and working on tucking the rear knee in has
helped. (kinda like a spray-indicator...) I'm now keeping my rear leg
less strait and it's helping to slow down the old TRC in the preturn...
Attitude (of the ski) is everything! :^)

Another trick I'm gonna try (told to me by an O'Brien rep) is to
lightly sand the sharp bevels on the last one-third of the ski. This
will help the ski to roll through the transition (preturn) a little
    smoother. Comments?...

938.181sand a little now,sand a little later.COMET::KLEINMWhat do you mean I missed the gates?Mon Jul 13 1992 19:0524
    Doug,

I definately agree w/the OB rep. Not only will the ski roll onto it's
deceleration edge quicker,it will help the ski achieve angle out of the
turn somewhat as well. We don't usually recommend that anymore nowadays
with adj.fins, also,a lot of weekend warriors would sand a little, sand
a little more,a a little more until they had the bevels to a point
where it was actually harming them,ya know, the "point of diminishing
    return" theory?  =8*')

So,I would say do it,just be very careful that you do not go too far
up towards the mid-section,and take a little off at a time. You will
be able to sand a bit more off, round it more,on the ON side of your
stick,a little less on the OFF side, you don't want to ski to roll too
aggressively on your off side. If you do happen to sand too much off,
you'll have to buy an adj.fin and slide er back a bit to get some of
that predictibility back into you ski.

Good luck, and keep those hips foreward, cuz, the ski will tend to leave
you behind due to it's tighter turning radius and more aggressive
    deceleration characteristics.

    Matt
938.182Consider an Adj.fin.COMET::KLEINMWhat do you mean I missed the gates?Tue Jul 14 1992 03:5653
    Ya know Doug,

You probably don't want to spend the money (about $35) for an
adjustable fin,but you could control and change so much more about
the way you and your ski work together with a fin than by sanding
    your bevels.

    For instance:

If your ski is not coming around quick enough out of your off side
turn, you could move the fin foreward.

If your ski was over-turning,hooking coming out of your on side turn,
you could increase the depth of the fin at the leading edge.

If you wanted the ski to roll over onto it's decel edge quicker, you
can decrease the depth of the fin at the leading edge, but,if after
making that adjustment, the ski starts hooking, you could slide it back
    about 1/32" to correct that.

I am a firm believer in the adj. fins. Once a person detects his
problem,a slight modification in the attitude of the ski can do
wonders. The only rules are, mark, record all changes on the bottom
of the ski and fin with a pencil, make only one directional change at
a time, and make it a minor one at that.

Basically, for your on side you will make up-down adj.
and for your off side, you should move the fin eithor for or aft.
Depth at the trailing edge should remain at about 2 1/2 inches, any
shallower and the ski may pop out in hard turns and it
will not hold a good angle through the wakes.

These changes should be made without a foil attached,if you are skiing
34/22 or 36/15 and are using a fin, remember to change the angle when
you change the blade so that remains constant.

for skiing up to 28 off,a wing angle of 7 degrees seems just right.

into 28 and 32,about 10 degrees is needed
after that, the most I have ever used was about 12.
For skiers not at 34/22 or 36/15 I have always stressed body position
first to correctly decelerate the ski, secondly fin adjustments.

but that is just my opinion. :-)

One more cool thing, the attitude of the ski can be greatly changed
with a fin adjustment, and by doing that you can utilize the entire
ski at all times,if the ski is riding too nose deep in the turns,
you just take away a bit of that pressure by increasing the depth of
the fin at the leading edge.

938.184floating towers anybody?COMET::KLEINMWhat do you mean I missed the gates?Wed Jul 15 1992 02:1114
    I need some advice.

Has anyone out there been to a tournament where the judging towers
were out in the water, floating? It would be needed if the course was
too far from the shoreline to be seen by a shoreline judge.
We have this problem at our lake. The lake is 1700 ft wide and the
course is in the middle. For our tournament that is to be held in
Sept,we do not wish to drag the course in closer to shore, although
that is what we did last year. If we could find a simple solution
for a floating judging tower, our lives would be made much simpler.

    thx,

938.185Floating Towers - No problemPOLAR::KEENANThu Jul 16 1992 10:5715
    Matt,
The last two Eastern Canadian tourney sites, in Ste. Adele Quebec and
Dartmouth Nova Scotia, both had floating towers.
They seemed to work well. The judges looked like they had a great
view and I didn't notice any backwash. Both sites were on small, but a
touch too wide for shore judging, private lakes.
As for 'legality', I presume that there's no problem. CWSA rules
generally follow AWSA. Also, the Ste. Adele tournament was record
capability with tighter split and total tolerences as well as videoing the
boat path any time a skier got within a pass of a record, in order to ensure
    no weaving.
If you need more info on how they set it up, reply to this note and
I'll see if I can dig up the names of the tournament organizers.

I am very much interested in what they used. I am familiar with
where they would need to be placed, how high off the water and such,
just don't know what to use that would be stable, simple, and yet
    would not create backwash.

    Matt,
A friend of mine just came back from a tournamant at Safari Lake
near Toronto, and it might be a better place to check out for floating
    towers than the others.
Call Dave or Sandra Kovak at 416 659-7862.
    	A few details:
Dave is a builder. He constructed the houses around their site so
I presume that even if he didn't build the towers, he'd know how they were
    put together.
I only met Dave once, very briefly, last year, so he probably won't
remember me but tell him you got his name from a friend of Dan
Anderson. He should remember Dan as he got into 38 off at the
    tournament.
Dan described the Safari Lake site as one of the best he ever skied
at, with the floating towers like pontoon boats and not causing
backwash. It sounded like quite the tournament too - Joel McClintock
was competing and several skiers ran 35 off. Oh well, I'll remain upbeat
about finally running 22 off this year.

best of luck with your tournament,

    Jim,

congrads on your 22 off. 28 becomes much more interesting, the key
is patience in the turns and good long hard pulls through the wakes,
    and use an aggressive deceleration.

Thanks again for the info and references about the floating towers, but
just today, our Board of Mis-directed directors voted to move our
only class c to another lake and let another club host it.

Slalom Clinic Report

Yesterday, me and 11 other skiers spent the day with Dave Reinhard.
The clinic was held on Long Pond...conditions were cloudy, overcast
in the morning, but glassy conditions made up for the lousy weather.
The tow boat was a True-Trac III Centurian. I'm a real wake brat,
but with four people in the boat I found the wake to be very
tolerable....even through the course at slow speeds.

Dave is lots of fun, I got a lot out of the class from him.
It's funny how weeks of aggravation can be corrected by just a few
small adjustments, like, keeping your head up around the buoys,
leading with your front knee to slow the ski down, etc. And
then having someone re-inforce what you know you should be
doin'.....hard hard pulls! It was great.

We were rained out from 2:30 on, but after 15 deep water starts,
and 30 passes through the course, I really didn't mind! If
it had been nicer, Dave was going to do a demonstration on the
Connelly Schtick, and I was going to ride in the boat to take
photos....but...oh well. Next year.

    Matt,

You missed the first one this afternoon,it was at 1:30. The Tournament
of Champions is a "kneeboard and skiboard" tournament,no traditional
    skiing is involved.

These tourneys are on the PRIME network. I not sure when the next one
is one,I do know that it is sometime this week. I will find out for
    you tomarrow.

I hope ya'll remembered that Bud is on tonight,ESPN.

I was'nt impressed with the wakeboarders, aside from the SCUD,most of
their manuevers were pretty lame, you don't have to be an accomplished
boarder to pull off the majority of the tricks in their runs.

The kneeboarders however impressed the hell out of me! They were fun
to watch,I wish I was still able to kneeboard because they showed me
a lot of tricks that I would enjoy learning.

Matt (or any other Colorado skiers),
They're sending me to CXO August 18th to 22nd. I'd really
appreciate it if you could list any clubs or individuals that welcome
drop-in skiers. Ideally I'd like to ski a course with perhaps some
coaching or even a tournament, but I'm mainly interested in avoiding
a week off the water. Of course I'd expect to pay and I'm an AWSA
member so there shouldn't be an insurance issue with a club.
In the latest issue of the AWSA magazine the tournament schedule
mentions Randy Hocking from Greely CO. Do you know anything about him
    or his club?
I'm looking forward to getting some work done (had to put that in
in case my boss reads the notes) and seeing a bit of Colorado - everybody
from KAO who's been out there has fallen in love with the place.

Give me a call at DTN 522-2106 when you get here. I'll be on vacation skiing

city lake here in the Springs. It is a public lake, so we have to be off by
10 AM, but we usually get a couple sets in by then. Matt and I both have
tournament boats, and will be glad to give you a pull. Actually, Matt may be
at Lake Powell that week, but I'll be at the lake every morning. Too bad you
won't be here a couple weeks later. We'll be having a Class C tournament in
Pueblo (60 miles South), and a Novice tournament at our lake in the Springs on
Sept. 12-13 (I think that is the correct date, Matt?)

Greely is 2-3 hours from CXO. The Regionals were held there last week.

Isn't the biggest concern over water skiing becoming an olympic

I don't agree with that, but I believe that is their argument along
with the fact that there has to be a mechanical factor(the towboat).

Well, it seems that all the shooting types of events are fairly
technology dependent, even the things that people throw have changed from wood
to metal, composites, etc. To say nothing of the footwear that presumably grips
the ground/track "better" than last years'. Pole vaulters probably store some

938.209LAKE POWELL!!AHHH-SOME!COMET::KLEINMWhat do you mean I missed the gates?Tue Aug 18 1992 20:2642
    Jeanne,

Lake Powell is definately the most beautiful, most relaxing, hottest
place I have ever taken a vacation. The lake is (I am guesstimating)
about 150 miles long and has more arms, coves, channels, legs, and off-
shoots than anyone could ever explore in a lifetime. Because of that
fact,it isn't too difficult to get away from everyone and have a remote
spot all to yourself, not having to see anyone all week long if you do
not wish to. This lake looks very much like the Grand Canyon with about
300 ft of water in it. It is truely breathtaking scenery, but because of
the abrupt shoreline(there is some sandy beach, but it is very limited)
there is a tremendous problem with backwash and rollers that refuse to
die. If you can afford to go in one direction,it isn't a problem, the
lake is usually glass calm even out in the main channel, but with the
heavy traffic from the houseboats and cruisers,it remains very rolly.

This year we are taking our own slalom course, hoping we can find a
deserted sandy beach front in which to set the course in front of,thus
eliminating backwash. My friend who goes there much more often than
I have, claims he knows "just the right place" to install it. I hope
he is right, hitting backwash and rollers at 32 off for a week could
tend to discourage oneself. :-) But we are taking many other toys
and devices of the water sort for those times we are just toooo
tired to try stopping a boat that's running 36 mph.

I have heard that there are more jet skiers there than boats anymore
and that scares the he!! out of me,hope they stay far from our course
and out of OUR channel! :-)

There is no radio,tv,or newspapers,so you are away from the world for
a week, and that is what I love the most, along side the 100 degree plus
temps. We will be taking off from Bullfrog bay in a 70 ft double decker
houseboat with airconditioning,a dishwasher, all the niceties of a
    mansion.

Gas is over $2.00/gal,ice is expensive, the waiting line for the gas
pumps and the ramp is atrocious, but, aside from the usual Marina blues,
it is an experiance everyone should have in their mental scrap book.

    Wayne & Matt,
A belated thank you for the pulls a couple of weeks ago. I enjoyed
your site, especially Pikes Peak hanging in the background of 3 ball,
and the (initially) friendly, confidence-building boat times.
Hope you guys enjoy the rest of your season.
I'm off to Indiana and Ohio for three tournaments this weekend
which will just about wrap up our skiing. You'd find one of the sites
very nice. A wheat farmer in Indiana dug a course-sized pond in his
field. It is exactly like the movie "Field of Dreams" except that it's
a water ski site instead of a baseball diamond.
    	see you later,
    	Jim

I was thinking a run up to the balmy waters of the Merrimack in
Hooksett may be called for by the end of the week. Suppose to be in the
mid 50's for air temps, and south of the power plant the water may be
as warm if not warmer. Not sure when ,or if they pull the course.

YaButt, the MurkieMack only freezes over about one year in four -
due again in 93/94 by my reckoning. January thaw and my birthday make
those two months possible, then around March the trash starts floating

if we were to waterski next Sunday, December 13th, I believe
the 1991 record of December 12th would offically be surpassed.

I seem to remember some sort of "Don Wilson Rule" about
giving up on barefooting when one's age reached the speed required to
foot. {which could be defered by losing weight and/or growing bigger
feet ? (-: }

938.237Apropos absolutely nothing, but I'd like to knowGLITTR::JOHNHCFri Dec 18 1992 15:562
What's a midrange price for a skiing drysuit?

938.238Plan on $300CSLALL::JEGREENJust say NO to winterizing!Mon Dec 21 1992 16:3924
They all seem to run around $250-300 depending on style and whether
it's a barefoot drysuit or a regular drysuit. The B/F suits have a
little stronger seals, and sometimes they have an extra outer layer
cuff meant more to deflect water than prevent seapage.

The only choice is whether you want a neoprene type , ala wetsuits
style, or the newer baggy type (urethane ?). I have a baggy type which
I find to be easier to put on over sweat pants/shirts. I have friends
who wear ski parkas under their baggy d/suits. One advantage of the
neoprene suits is that they have some ability to retain body heat. If I
wore just my swim trunks and a baggy dry suit I'd be about as cold as a
person without any dry suit. The neoprene, or Nylon II, type seem to
run about 4mm in the body, 3mm in the arms & legs.

$300 is a lot of cabbage but for me it's worth it. Considering what I
have tied up in the boat and equipment, $300 is a drop in the bucket,
and it allows me to extend my ski season to almost 10 months. I haven't
skied in January of February yet, March is tough too as the water is
still quite crunchy. :^) I still want to head out just one more time
this year!! Rick, Reg, Rog, any other sick-o's ? Doug said he's done
but I bet that would change if you threw him a handle!

938.239Thanks for the feedback.SPARKL::JOHNHCMon Dec 21 1992 17:016
Thanks. I was hoping the skiing drysuits would be cheaper just because
there are more skiers than kayakers, but the price range is the same.
Maybe they're even the same suits. Neoprene suits (I have several) are
    too restrictive for kayaking.

938.240Steamer suits...KLAATU::MALCOLMTue Dec 22 1992 14:1110
    John,
Have you looked at "Steamer" suits? I have a couple I use for skiing,
and tubing. I also use them on my catamaran which requires a LOT of
flexability. I have 2 Oneil Heat 4/3 steamers that are great. They
aren't drysuits, but they are very, very comfortable. They are 4 mm in
the body, 3 in the arms and legs. They also have rubber pads integrated
to the knees to prevent wear. I believe N H Hobie/Windsurf had some on
sale a couple of weeks ago.

938.241Neoprene doesn't do well with ice.SPARKL::JOHNHCTue Dec 22 1992 14:3220
Well, the problem with neoprene -- other than flexibility, which
admittedly could be fixed somewhat by application-specific design -- is
that ice crystals damage it. The damage doesn't occur if the material
is stationary (wet wetsuit left in the car overnight in winter) and you
wait for it to thaw before moving the suit. If you have ice crystals in
the suit while you're wearing it, the sharp edges of the crystals cut
into the walls of the cells in the neoprene, making the suit less and
less useful every time you use it. This is the same reason divers rinse
off their gear after a saltwater dive; the salt crystals left after the
suit dries out do the same thing.

So for winter kayaking, which invariably leaves the surface of the
kayak caked with ice, I think a non-neoprene drysuit is in order. Last
winter I used multi-layer clothing under foul-weather gear, but in the
end that seemed almost as restrictive as a wetsuit worn under
    foul-weather gear.

    Thanks for the suggestion, though.
