Not quite a complete separation !!!!
The Williams team will continue to benefit from Renault
technology for at least another two years after the French
car manufacturers F1 departure at the end of the 97 season.
Renault Sport head Patrick Faure said on Thurs. (30th) that
Williams have signed a contract with French company Mecachrome,
a Renault partner for 22 years, to supply the team with engines
in 1998/99 .
Mecachrome, specialists in assembling and tuning F1 power units
will use Renault know-how to develope the engines and market
them under their own name.
Faure said his company's objective in their last season
was a 6th world title in a car using Renault power.
Interesting ehh????
Cheers
Mark

| This is a good illustration of a rumour that grows stronger every day
about Renault-Sport trying to remain in F1.
Here is the idea: currently Renault-Sport are putting lots of resources
and spending a lot of money to be in F1 with zero or little return. The
world champion titles of Mansell, Prost, Schumacher and recently of
Damon Hill could not be exploited, thanks to Mr Williams lack of
interest. Renault's top management (who happen to manage Renault-Sport
as well) have asked to stop this farce.
Their new idea is: let's pull out (at the end of this season) and see
if some teams would PAY for our engines and services. Mecachrome is one
of Renault-Sport subcontractors. They've already supplied Renault
engines to Ligier.
The supporting facts are that except for Vincent Gaillardot 1 engineer
who joined Ferrari, no one has left Renault-Sport as of now. Management
have always said that there will be exciting projects for RS in 1998
and beyond. Lots of watchers think that those will be F1 projects.

| I have read that many of the resources at Renault Sport currently
working on the F1 engines will be switched to a project to build aero
engines at the end of 1997.
Bluff?

Memory corrupted: Vincent Gaillardot joined TWR.
He was the Renault-Sport engineer looking after Schumacher's and I think
Alesi's engine last year.
