Note 1353.0 O'Day auction update... No replies
HAVOC::GREEN "steel strings" 39 lines 25-SEP-1989 09:39
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have tried to find my original note on the O Day Auction to update
the nature and contents of the sale, but it ain't there. Can't
figure out what happened to it.
In any event, I went through the inspection phase of the plant last
Friday - there is a monumnetal amount of stuff to sell.
Tomorrow,
Tuesday, the production stuff is scheduled to go. All the power
tools ( sanders, buffers, band saws, molds, work benches, vises,
shop vacs, et al) in lots large enough to guarantee they will be
sold - 4 shop vacs, 6 sanders, 10 large floor fans. There is enough
wood to construct a house from teak plywood, lots of trim molding
(again, in large lots), all the chemicals, office equipment, jigs
and molds.
The sails - brand new - go tomorrow. Most sizes of o'day and cal
in sets of main and genoas.
Wednesday,
The boats go. there are 70 boats in various stages of completion.
THe best bets (in terms of being finished) are 3 272's - ready
to go but for some interior trim and wheels. Diesels are installed.
Didn't go on the bigger boats, but the 30's and 40's are less complete,
it seemed. There are bins and boxes of fasteners and hardware -
thousands of bolts/nuts/washers to the lot. Stancions, s/s hardware,
bow pulpits, chain plates - all in large lots. Some wooden boat
folks who are building may want to take this in as a reare chance
to get things very cheap. Some propane stoves, freezer units,
compasses, bilge pumps. Lots of finished teak shutters and
companionway doors, tillers, heads, coolers, cabin lights.
There is a rumor that big money is planning on buying the whole
lot, but more will be known tomorrow.
The whole building is set up for the sale, and it will take the
whole 2 days if it goes on.

| I recieved a multi page flyer from Rudy Nickerson Friday that said they
are now building O'Days again. Last time I talked to him (last fall),
he was building a modified 192 with lots of extras for short money and
was talking about custom building O'Day 35s.
In the flyer, he has everything from 19 footer to O'Day 40s. No prices
shown. Sure hope he pulls it off. It would be good to have a low cost
builder back in business for the masses again. I don't have the address
here, but if you look up D&R enterprises in these notes or call
information for Anosett Mass, they should be able to help you.
I might be going down that way in the next couple of weeks to pick up
some Garhauler gear. If so, I'll try and find out more.

PS From the latest copy of the Pearson Current (Pearson Owner's news
letter), it looks like they want to do the same thing, but are no where
near as far along as Rudy.

| I thought the Laser/Sunfish people had bought the DaySailor...but
in any case, I would be interested in hearing a price for an O'Day
Daysailor (19') suitable for fleet use.
The sailing club in Worcester (RPCS) has an antique fleet that needs to
be replaced--and no money to replace it--but one question that repeatedly
comes up is "If we DID have some money, what would we buy?" The Daysailor
is a good rugged boat to start with, and perhaps a special ruggedized
version could be invented if they're being made by a small outfit?
