28.17 | Oil seal Sealer? | SUBPAC::BOWNE | | Fri May 30 1997 11:58 | 18 |
| I'm in the process of rebuilding an old motorcycle engine,
and have a question about an oil seal. On the main bearing which
supports the crankshaft, the original oil seal was 'assisted' in
it's outer perimeter sealing abilities with some type of sealer.
It is not silicone seal. The surface where the seal came out of
has an appearance similar to the roughness left when a piece of
corrugated cardboard has been pulled apart into two 'slices' of
thinner cardboard. The material the case is made out of is magnesium,
and the seal is rubber. Any idea what this sealer is and where I
could find some? (Hopefully someplace cheaper than a Honda dealer!)
When I was ordering the gaskets from the Honda dealer, (and told him
that I had already ordered the bearings/seals from a bearing shop),
he did advise me that if this seal should leak, the engine WILL blow,
so I want to make sure I get this seal installed properly.
Any advise appreciated.....
Thx,
Tom
