    My father came across the article and sent it to me here in Mass. It's
    probably old stuff to most of you, but it's a gold nugget on this side.

		Man of Substance with a Classic Style

	Once upon a time there was a young football manager who wanted his
team to score with style. He was aware that all goals counted the same, and
that an awful lot seemed to come from set pieces; those would, of course,
be welcome. But he hoped his players would become known for finding the net
at the end of fine, sweeping moves. "I realise," he said,"that it may sound
like a fantasy."

	There were indeed fairytale elements about Liam Brady's appointment
as manager of Celtic, and the launching of his career with a series of
friendlies in Ireland, even if resulte were mixed. Upon arrival eight days
ago at Dublin, whose airport is a couple of miles from the estate on which
he was raised, he was greeted by young autograph hunters. "It turned the
clock," he said later, "In 1970, Celtic touched down here on their way to
play Waterford in the European Cup -- and I was one of those kids waiting
with their autograph books."

	Brady was but a glimmer in Arsenal's discerning eye then. Billy
McNeill, whose office he now occupies, was among the giants of Jock Stein's
great side that, four seasons earlier, had brought the European title to
Britain through a stirring enforcement of style. Few would remember Stein
as a fantasist, but before the triumph over Internazionale, he told the
The Observer's Hugh McIlvanney: "We don't just want to win this cup. We
want to win by playing good football, to make neutrals glad we won it."
Brady as he sets about fashioning his own contribution to Parkhead history,
at least starts with the same noble design.

	Though Celtic's tradition is to turn to sons of the club --every
previous manager, from Willie Maley to McNeill, had worn the green-and
white hoops of a institution founded by Irish immigrants to Glasgow --
Brady's background and eminence as a player gave him the status of a
favourite cousin. When he came to Parkhead with Juventus in 1981, he was
accouded a memorable reception. There are, however, few more reliable ways
of falling out of favour with a club than to become the manager, and if
football were not such an addictive drug it would be as surprising that
Brady, financiallyl independent since his return from Italy, had taken the
job as that Celtic had given it to a novice.

	In the programme for his testimonial match in Dublin last year, his
friend John Giles wrote: "Liam is 34, well balanced, well off and well
prepared for life after football." Brady, who had decided to restrict
himself to advising individual palyers, said of team management: "I don't
think I'm cut out for that." He began to suffer withdrawal symptoms after a
chat with Ossie Ardiles, then at Swindon. "I asked how he was coping with
the job. He said he loved it, every day of it, and considered winning as a
manager even better than winning as a player."

	Celtic's approach persuaded him to risk a slight stain on his
reputation. "It is Celtic," Brady pointed out, "who are taking the big
gamble. I'm confident I can put over to modern players the way I want the
game played. But if you're asking for first impressions, it's the other
side of the job -- dealing with the media, my board of directors, and so
on -- that frightens me."

	The past month, it seems, has confirmed warnings that Glasgow
football is not so much a goldfish bowl as a shark tank in which old
allegiances can still bite, for all the undoubted softening of Rangers'
sectarian edge. Even inside Parkhead there are tensions, money worries
induced by the evocative old stadium's galloping obsolescence while an
obligation remains to respond to Ibrox's spending on players. Celtic have
tried to get businesslike by engaging from outside industry an abrasive
chief executive, Terry Cassidy, alongside whom observers believe Brady may
find it difficult to work.

	There are no complaints thus far. The board promised reasonable
funds. Brady has been able to recruit his erstwhile client Tony Cascarino
from Aston Villa for L1.1 million, and saw promise in the blend of
Cascarino and Charlie Nicholas when Celtic began their tour with victory
over Shelbourne. Subsequent defeat at Cork, where he changed the team,
suggested that he will be seeking buyers for some players. Celtic struggled
last season, qualifying for Europe only after a surge too late to save
McNeill.

	Cascarino is there because of his strength in the air -- "We
believe in crosses in this country" -- but also to bring others into the
game. He would, said Brady, show that there is no contradiction between
this particular big man and a passing game. "Balls will be played to people
rather than into space. A lot of managers now are content to gain yardage,
on the basis that when the ball is far from your goal the others can't
score. I don't want that. I want players to express themselves."

	He wants to be the manager who brings forth to stardom the
eternally promising, 26-year-old Paul McStay, and believes Nicholas may yet
be refloated at 29. Fantasy? Perhaps, but no patron of footballing art
would wish Brady other than well in an age of 'prevailing mediocrity', to
use the phrase employed recently by Ireland's arch-critic Eamon Dunphy, who
said his compatriot's reputation as a great player had "survived the
evidence" largely because he was so adept at manipulating commentators.

	"I've no time for Dunphy,"said Brady. "I think he's filled with
envy. But, if the point of his piece was to ask whether I'm a man of
substance or a man of image, well, now we shall see."

Celtic have refused to pay Newcastle's asking price of �250 000 for old Roy, 
so the deal's off. Nice try Ossie!

    Villa have refused 750k for McGrath who's 32. It seems a lot of money

Aitken cost Newcastle something like �550 000. Jim Smith used to swear by (or 
'at'?) his experience, but as Newcastle's side last year seemed to be 90% over 
30 anyway it was never too useful!

McGrath still looks like a class footballer, though, even with those famous 
knees.

        As a long-time Roy Aitken fan, I would have to say that he is well
    past it now. Celtic would be foolish to bring him back to Scotland at 
    any price. McGrath would definitely be a better buy. With his suspect
    knees, however, I would be pretty hesitant unless the price came down
    considerably.
         By the way, where are JJ and the other representatives of the SQF 
    CSC? No contributions yet from you lads for the reborn conference? How
    about match reports on the Dundee United and Dunfermline games? Gary
    Spain was kind enough to let me know that we won both. How did the side
    look?

    P.S Congrats to Gary and Dezz for getting the conference up and running
    again. It was tough to do without my usual football conference "fix"

    Celtic have signed Gary Gillespie from Liverpool for a fee of 
    �925,000.
    He should make his debut against Falkirk at Parkhead on Saturday.
    Brady signed him before the end of the European transfer deadline.

    Gillespie scored on his debut, I think Coyne got two but I don't know
    who got the other goal. Good result for Brady's men in their first
    league home game of the season, especially as Rangers were beaten

    Celtic continued their impressive start to the season with a fine win
    over THE most negative team ever to play at Parkhead(even more than
    Aberdeen or Dundee United).
    A 1st � goal by debutant Gary Gillespie,a recent �925,00 signing from 
    Liverpool,and two from born again striker Tommy Coyne (that's 4 in 3
    games btw),had the match finished as a competition by around the � hour
    mark.
    The 1st goal was a beaut. Gillespie glancing past two defenders,before
    rounding Westwater & shooting into an empty net.Needless to say,the
    terraces errupted when that one went in !
    Apart from this effort,the 31 year-old centre half cruised through the
    match,hardly breaking sweat as he broke up the (not many of
    them)Falkirk attacks.
    
    The 2nd goal was initially an excellent save from Westwater from a
    Charlie Nicholas shot,but he could only parry the ball onto the waiting
    Tommy Coyne,who knocked the ball gleefully into the net with the top of
    his facog !
    
    The third,a defence splitting pass from the King of silky skills,Charlie
    Bubbles,a telling cross from Tony `Looks like a dumpling to me'
    Cascarino,& there was Tommy Coyne again,to nod home from 3 yards.

    The 2nd � was a bit of a flop as far as good football goes,with
    Falkirk (We want a 12 team league coz it'll be more exciting) totally
    spoiling the match as a spectacle by playing the offside trap 
    around (and I'm not exaggerating)....15 times !!!
    
    Celtics inability to match this resulted in the poor linesman taking an
    abundance of abuse for some shocking decisions.
    
    The only time we managed to beat them,Coyne crossed & Collins knocked
    in his 3rd goal of the season from 12 yards.
    Falkirks only consolation came in the last minute,when that man who's
    name sounds like a hot takeaway from your local bakery,Crawford Baptie,
    knocked home from close in.
    However,judging by the celebrations coming from the travelling
    support,you'd have thought they'd won the league !!
    They sang,"There's only one Crawford Baptie"...and I should bl**dy well
    think so too..I mean,there can't be two sets of parents in this world
    who'd land their wean with a name like that !!
    
    Footnote: Playing in the number 6 jersey for Falkirk yesterday,was ex-
              Hibernian & Nott'm Forest player,Brian Rice.
              I played in the same school team as this guy at under 15 & 16 
              level,and judging by yesterday's performance,he hasn't improved 
              any !
    
              He was mince back in 19..eh...canteen...and he's even mincier
              now !!
    
    P.S. A cheeky wee 4 pts from our next two games,against the Sheep & the

    Yes the stadium (?) capacity has been cut to 35,000 following a safety
    report by Stathclyde regional council.I think once the safety
    improvements have been made,then the capacity will be increased
    again,but to what,I don't know.

    match was something in the region of 4,500 !
    
    Never mind all you Hunnites that cannot get tickets,at least you won't

    I'LL take this oppertunity to say Celtic must be the most
    boring team in the premier at the moment..
    
    and having spent �2 million quid on 2 huddy's also makes them the
    laughing stock as well.

    
    Celtic take on St.Johnstone at McDairmid Park Perth on Saturday,and
    nothing short of a victory will do.
    After losing to Aberdeen,Rangers & then dropping a point at home to
    lowly St.Mirren,I feel Liam Brady is about to find out that the Celtic
    fans aren't prepared to wait for success.
    
    Paul McStay is still out & there are injury doubts still hanging over
    John Collins and Gary Gillespie.
    In form Mike Galloway should hold down a place & there may be a suprise
    recall to the 1st team for out of favour striker Dariusz Dziekanowski
    & ex-Arsenal midfeilder,Martin Hayes.
    Both have been scoring regularly for the reserves & with Coyne being in
    dispute with Brady,and Nicholas showing a loss of form,they may play
    for the 1st team for the 1st time this season.
    
    Going by his current form,1.1 million pund flop,Tony Cascarino may face
    the chop as Brady attempts to get the bhoys back on song.

     Following a year + of exile from the most important note in the
    conference,I detect a slight softening of approach from the public at
    large...however,it's dissapointing to have to record that the Bhoys
    appear to be playing the same dross as we were last year(after a
    promising start...).I suppose there is something to be said for 
    consistancy (is there ??)
     I can only hope that there are some wholesale changes at the club,as
    the current furrow appears only to lead to the gate at the end of the
    field and into oblivion.
     It appears that Liam will suffer from the same problems as celtic
    managers of the past,in that they are,in themselves,good enough guys
    but would appear resticted by the crap attitude of the people who know
    the code to the safe....the TV program last week "On the Line"
    highlighted this very well I feel.
    
     Who knows,who cares,who made the sandwiches ???
    
     Glad to be back but sad to have little to shout about.

    they had taken their chances.   Celtic's defence - especially in the
    air looked very dodgy indeed against third-rate opposition.

    At least we won mate !!!......maybe not that convincingly I admit,but
    when you consider that none of the other Scottish clubs managed a
    victory(of any kind),then a 2-0 home win will do me very nicely.
    
    Anyway,back to more important matters than bickering with Huns.
    Celtic still look a shaky side compared to the one I saw beat Dundee
    United,Dunfermline & Falkirk at the start of the season.I feel Brady
    will need to dig deep & sign another three defenders.
    Gillespie has both skill and class,whereas Rogan,Morris & Whyte are
    sh*te (I'd play Galloway at the back before any of these three)

    Back to Premier league duty today after the midweek home win in the
    UEFA cup. The Bhoys take on Airdrie at home,and will surely will be looking
    for some revenge after being knocked out of the Skol cup � finals by
    the Lanarkshire team.
    Gillespie is suspended after being sent off against St.Johnstone last
    week,so I think there may be a place in the team for Rogan at left-back
    with Wdowczyk(sp?)moving to sweeper behing Derek Whyte.
    Personally,I'd make sure there was a place at the back for Galloway as
    he's been playing out of his skin recently,and failing that,put him in
    midefield at the expense of Peter `The Pointer' Grant !!
    
    Brady stated in this mornings paper that there was a doubt over
    Cascarino's fitness (was he ever fit ?),but if OK..then he would play !
    I mean,what is Brady thinking about ??......Cascarino is p*sh,,it's
    blatantly obvious that himself & Brady are good pals,and that's why the

    On a cheerier front,Paul McStay is expected to play a reserve game this
    week after his long lay off through injury.
    The midfielder has been out since the close season tour of the Ireland
    with a knee/ligament problem sustained in the match against Dundlalk.
    There's even talk about him being fit for the return leg against
    Ekeren in the UEFA cup. (A tad optimistic I think)
    
    Good to see the best midfielder in Scotland back on the road to
    recovery.

    Let's be fair....the weather on Saturday was truly attrocious,Celtic
    aren't setting the heather on fire...& the punters had just forked out
    �7 (+ bus fare,grub money & a couple of quid for a few bevvies) three
    nights previous,to watch a UEFA cup tie.
    I was wofking last Saturday,but even if I wasn't...I think the weather
    & the fact that I didn't have another �12 or so burning a hole in my
    pocket,would have neant that I wouldn't have been there either.....& I
    am loyal (That's loyal....not loyalist 8*)).
    
    Anyway,there's more of you huns than there is us Tims in
    Scotland.....but I still don't think you'll fill your stadium the next

    Celtic set off for Belgium this afternoon,minus Northern Ireland
    full-back Anton Rogan. He's expected to sign for Sunderland in midweek
    for a fee of around �340,000.
    John Hewitt,currently on loan to Middlesborough,is also expected to

    Andy Walker & Martin Hayes are at Newcastle & Coventry
    respectively,and with a bit of luck they maybe just daft enough to

    Mike Galloways 11th minute goal ensured that Celtic were heading for
    the second round without much trouble and by all newspaper reports
    were unlucky not to score an away victory.Let's hope we get a
    reasonable draw so that perhaps we can get a decent run in europe.
    Unfortunately we never managed to lose Morris and Grant on the trip and
    it looks like we'll have to put up with both meantime.

    The scoreline flatters Celtic slightly in a match where Hearts were the
    better side for a large portion of the 90 minutes.
    Three brilliant saves from Pat Bonner,and a couple of dodgy decisions
    from the referee gave Celtic both points.
    To the goals however......

    No.1  A corner taken by Joe Miller in the 2nd minute,was met by young
          full-back Mark McNally,who bulleted a header past Henry Smith
          from around 15 yards.

    No.2  The equaliser came from John Robertson who chipped the keeper from
          18 yards after that Fud Derek Whyte (Again !!),made a blunder in front
          of goal.
    
    No.3  Tommy Coyne (going nowhere basically) was tripped just inside the
          box by Gary McKay. Charlie slotted home the resulting penalty.
          That's our 3rd penalty already this season btw !!
          And IMHO...Tommy must have been taking diving lessons from Ally
          McCoist.
    
    No.4  Coyne beat the offside trap & unselfishly played the ball through
          to the "Big Dumplin" (who looked suspiciously offside I hasten
          to add).
          The big Haddy almost made a **** of it by putting it away with
          the studs of his right boot.
          Every Celtic player (excluding Bonner) then proceeded to jump
          all over the big man,such was their excitement over him scoring
          his 1st goal for the club.
    
    
    The only other incidents worth noting were,apart from a brilliant
    Bonner save from Scott Crabbe in the 1st half,was the penalty &
    sending-off incident in the 2nd half.
    Cascafudbox clocked Craig Levein in the coupon,in ra boax.....the ref
    gave a penalty & sent the big Tube off after only being on the pitch
    for six minutes.
    Robbo hit the ball well,but Big Packy pulled off a marvellous save by
    parrying his low shot arond the post.
    
    Celtic now take on Motherwell at Fir Park on Tuesday,and with Cascarino
    suspended Vladivar Dziekanowski should get a place on the bench.
    He was supposed to be playing yesterday,but Liam couldn't sober him up
    in time for the kick-off,or get that tart from Victoria's off him

    Celtic produced one of their best performances of the season at Fir
    Park last night,and really,the scoreline doesn't do them justice.
    Squandered chances by Dziekanowski,Miller & Coyne in the 2nd �,should
    have made the scoreline at least 5-0.
    
    To the goals however,Mike Galloway(playing centre-half)played a
    tremendous defence splitting pass through to Tommy Coyne who drilled a
    low shot past Billy Thomson's left hand post.
    Motherwell did have the better of the earlier exchanges though,and could
    have went into the lead when Bonner dropped a high ball,only to see it
    cleared to safety by Gillespie.
    
    The second goal at the start of the 2nd �was vintage Charlie. 
    He picked up on a long through ball from Miller,cut inside & drilled it 
    past the keeper.
    From then on,it was all Celtic. Dziekanowski should have scored on his
    comeback,but decided to pass the ball when six yards from goal,instead
    of belting it inot the net. A severe lack of confidence if ever I've
    saw one.
    Five minutes later Coyne had a shot from 8 yards saved by Thomson,and
    only managed to hit the post with the rebound.
    Some of the refereeing decisions last night bordered on the
    unbelievable.
    For example,Galloway was booked for his 1st (although dirty)challenge
    of the match,yet Neil Simpson committed 4 bad fouls in the match,and
    was only spoken to after the last one.
    The referees interpretation of the advanrage rule left a lot to be
    desired.
    I counted three ocassions in the 2nd half when he stopped play with
    Celtic racing goalward,but yet always managed to play the advantage
    rule,when quite frankly,there wasn't any advantage to be gained !
    
    One of the highlights of the nighton a lighter side,was the opportunity to 
    dish out a severe slagging of the `Wee Huns' in the new stand.
    At the start of the game,they were intent in throwing abuse at Galloway
    & the Celtic fans in the South terracing.
    But by � time they were beginning to wish they had stayed schtum !
    They took a hell of a ribbing through the 2nd � (especially some big
    fat git down the front),all justified though I hasten to add 8*))
    
    Dundee United at home on Saturday,with the highlights being shown on
    Scotsport on Sunday (My wee mole tells me).

    I thought Celtic played some great football against Motherwell in
    midweek,but the stuff they played yesterday was even better !!!
    The passing game that Brady had been preaching about since taking over
    as manager,finally showed.
    A truly brilliant individual performance from Charlie Nicholas,coupled
    with very competent performances from Brian O'Neill & Mick Galloway had
    the Celts in easy street before half-time.
    Paul McStay had a good first game back in midfield & John Collins
    looked more like his old self with some excellent runs on the flanks.
    
    To the goals.........No.1 was a peach.......Coyne with a brilliant pass
    across the 6 yard line & Charlie slid in to blast home the opener.
    
    No.2.....A cross from John Collins,a nod down from Tommy Coyne & there
    was Charlie again to slide the ball home.  
    
    The third came just after the re-start when Derek Whyte burst
    through,only for the keeper to block his shot.
    The ball fell to Charlie who shot against the far post. The rebound
    fell to Coyne who blasted the ball home.
    
    Four minutes later,a Panty-lining header was pushed onto the post by
    Bonner,O'Neill hit the rebound,Bonner again managed to get a hand to the
    ball but couldn't prevent it from crossing the line.
    
    The last goal was the best I've saw this season.
    Mikey Galloway thumping a 30 yarder with his right foot into the top
    corner of the net.
    A definate candidate for goal of the season.
    
    Celtic had other chances to improve their goal difference,but failed to
    capitalise on at least three occassions.
    Charlie should have had his hat-trick,but his 1st touch let him down &
    the keeper saved at his feet.
    Coyne shot just wide from 15 yards & a Collins header was brilliantly
    saved by Van Kemp in the United goal.
    
    On this form (& I'm not getting too carried away with the last 3
    results),Celtic may just be in with a shout of the title this year
    after all.
    Aberdeen's form is indifferent,Hearts will bottle it in a couple of
    weeks.
    As for Hibs,as soon as Keith Wright gets injured,they'll stop scoring
    goals.
    And as for the Hunnites.......

    Celtic had four players on International duty in Poland tonight.
    Bonner,Morris & Cascarino for the Republic..........& Wdoywczk for the
    Poles.
    The final score was 3-3,with Cascarino scoring the 3rd & Bonner
    apparently to blame for at least one of the Poles second half goals.
    
    Celtic take on Falkirk at Brockville on Saturday,and let's hope Shuggie
    & Packy are fit for this difficult fixture.

         Have no fear. You are not the only Tim working at DEC. This one is
    located on the other side of the Atlantic though, and really isn't
    close enough to Parkhead to comment regularly on the team's performance. 
    BTW it is nice to see that they beat Hearts, Motherwell, and Dundee United 
    recently and finally seem to be playing reasonably well. To be honest, 
    after the disappointments of the last few seasons, I find it hard 
    to get overly optimistic about their chances this early in the season.

    I'm really not too concerned about the Brady situation (not that one

    Tomorrow's second Old Firm match of the 91-92 season kicks off at 3pm.
    Highlights are due to be shown on BBC1,but as far as `live' coverage is
    concerned,I do not know of any channel planning to cover the game.
    
    Richard `looks like I'll have to lay off playing with my toliet parts'
    Gough looks to be fit for the Huns,but John `Grunter' Brown is out
    injured.
    Celtic will give a late fitness test to Gary Gillespie before deciding
    if he plays or not.But with Wednesday nights game against Neuchatel
    approaching,I cannot see Brady risking him unless he's 100% fit.

    Fact 1:  Rangers were the better team by far in the 1st �,but failed to
             capatilise on their advantage due to poor finishing from inadequate
             strikers.
    
    Fact 2:  Rangers never threatened to over-run Celtic after going
             one-up,or was the guy who wrote the match report in topic 47
             at the reserves match ???
    
    Fact 3:  Rangers played well enough in the 2nd half,but Celtic played
             even better.

             playing some brilliant flowing football.

    I feel the result was fair on the day,and Rangers have only

    However,the Celtic defence must take some credit for the fact that in
    Rangers domination of a full 45 minutes,they only managed 4 � decent
    attacks on Bonnar's goal.
    Celtic on the other hand,during their domination of the 1st 20 mins of

    It's do or die time tonight for Brady's Bhoys,as they attempt tp pull
    back a 4 goal deficit at Parkhead against Nauchetel Xamax.
    The match kicks-off at 7:10pm to suit BBC Scotland,who are covering the
    90 minutes (or 120) live !!
    
    Celtic must score early to give themselves any chance of pulling back
    the Swiss lead.However,no complacancy can afford to be shown at the
    back,as an away goal for Xamax could prove fatal.
    
    I've been asked by a couple of Huns if I really feel that Celtic can do
    it tonight,and my honest reply is.....
    
    "I wouldn't be going if I didn't think we could do it !!"
    
    
    I'd keep the same team as Saturday for tonight's game,with perhaps
    Steve Fulton on the bench in palce of Grant,as he's slightly more of an
    attacking midfielder(and doesn't point as much either).
    
    My prediction is Celtic to win 5-0 (Nicholas 2 in the 1st �,and McStay
    Collins & Coyne in the 2nd).
    
    Here's hoping a big crowd turns out,despite the match being shown live,

    Celtic failed to overcome their 5-1 deficit from the 1st leg,and some
    of the blame must surely go to Charlie Nicholas for failing to convert that
    4th minute penalty.
    If that had gone in,I believe that the Xamax defence would have
    crumbled & Charlie's game wouldn't have floundered as a result.
    Joe Miller let us down badly,with yet another inept
    performance,although he did score our only goal.
    Missed chances by Collins,Cascarino twice,Coyne & Charlie
    again....along with another stonewall penalty claim being turned down
    by a stroker of a referee who never allowed the game to flow,meant that
    Celtic never really had a chance of qualifying for round 3

    The damage was done in Switzerland however,& Brady must take his share
    of the blame for the team he picked that night,and the tactics they
    played.
    It showed the man's managerial naivete,as he under estimated the Xamax
    team after claiming that "there weren't any mugs in Europe..."after we
    scraped through against Ekeren.
    I really do have a gut feeling that last night was Paul McStay's last 
    venture into Europe with Celtic FC.
    As much as I don't want him to leave,I feel that the lads bound to have
    had enough,and will move at the end of the season.
    I had the privelage of watching the maestro live last night,and he
    showed at long last the watching audience that he is indeed a truly
    class player,with an absolutely marvellous performance in midfield.
    There isn't a player in that Govan Hun Scumbag XI,who could lace his
    boots !

    I have to add a note here after watching that excuse for a football
    team last night and after reading that nonsense of the previous

    1.Even if that haddie had scored no way were Celtic going to beat
      the Swiss, who were none to bad at the back and had two forwards
      who even on a bad day would run Celtic ragged at the back.
    
    2.The Swiss had a perfectly good goal chopped on for nothing,
     if anything it was a free kick to the Swiss after that dumpling

    What an excellent bit of noting there,and normally I would have replied
    in my usual satirical way.
    But this is the CELTIC FC topic,and I've no time to waste on cretins
    from 47 land....so without taking the bait from the illiterate
    one,I'll get straight down to the serious subject of noting (which is
    why we are supposed to be here in the 1st place,although from reading
    some of you-know-who's notes,you'd be excused for thinking otherwise).
    
    On Saturday,Celtic take on an Aberdeen side who have been blowing hot & 
    cold for most of the season.
    Their form has been on par with Celtic's regarding inconsistency,but
    without doubt,when on their game they are a formidable side.
    The Dutch quartet of Gilhaus,Van de Ven,Snelders & recent signing,Ten
    Caat,seem to be the backbone of the team.
    When these four are on form,they are capable of some excellent
    football.
    I feel the game could be won in midfield though,especially if McStay &
    Collins are on song.
    I'm still not too impressed with the defence just now,mainly because
    Wdowcyzk has played horrendously at left-back in the last couple of
    matches.
    However,new signing Tony Mowbray makes his debut tomorrow at
    centre-half & hopefully this will be the start of our defence improving
    to the extent that we stop giving away silly goals.
    Watch out for Gillespie coming back into the team as sweeper
    tomorow,with Galloway being a substitute.
    I'd drop Miller tomorrow,and play Fulton in midfield alongside O'Neil,

    I watched the highlight's of the game on Saturday night, and
    I was wondering how Mowbury(sp) played.Also how did Brady play 
    him, as it looked to me he as if he was playing in front of
    Gillespie, who looked as if he was sweeping,but I might be wrong

    Celtic deservedly took two points from a thrilling encounter with the
    Dons on Saturday.
    They totally dominated the 2nd half,and the TV highlights certainly
    didn't do them justice.
    They made it look an even match,but for the 70 minutes or so that they
    didn't show,Celtic had so much possession,the Sheep might just as well
    have gone home.
    
    Aberdeen only threatened Bonnar's goal on three occassions.
    The first was when they swcored against the run of play,when Gilhaus
    crossedd to the far post for Eoin Jess to slide the ball past Bonnar.
    The initial pass from Jim Bett was a Beaut,must I must say here &
    now,that if a man ever deserved to be sent off for bad tackles,it must
    surely have been him !!
    He committed at least three bookable fouls during the match,but yet
    George Smith chose to ignore this,coz Jim's a superstar,ain't he ???
    
    Their other two attempts on goal from the Dons,were a Gilhaus shot in the
    1st half that Packy did well to save,and a header late on from the big
    lanky gawk,Van Der Ark,which Bonnar again did well to save.
    
    The rest of the goalmouth action centred around Snelders goal.
    Firstly Coyne shot wide after being released by Nicholas. Then the same
    man again saw Snelders make a great save from his six yard shot after
    great work by Charlie.
    Celtic should have had a penalty when Ten Caat shoved O'Neil in the
    box,a minute later.
    Charlie scored the goal of the game when after being released by a
    brilliant McStay pass.....he shrugged off Irvine,nutmegged Watson &
    then brilliantly rounded Snelders before firing home.
    Debutant Tony Mowbray,playing centre-half in front of Gillespie,almost
    marked a memorable performance when he hit the junction of post & bar
    from 30 yards.
    The rest of the action came in the second half when Snelders had to
    look lively to save from Creaney & Nicholas before eventually being
    beaten by a cross from Coyne being bulleted home from around 8 yards by
    Gerry Creaney.
    
    Altogther,a deserved win for Celtic & we can now look forward to the
    jaunt to Tynecastle next Saturday to take two points of the over-rated
    Jambos 8*))

    Hearts gained revenge for their earlier league defeat at the hands of
    Celtic,by totally outplaying the Bhoys for most of the match.
    Celtic scored first through Coyne,against the run of play I hasten to
    add.
    Hearts fought back in the 2nd half to score goals through Levein,Wright
    & Crabbe.
    Hearts' second goal shouldn't have counted I feel,as Bonnar was fouled
    on the lead up to the corner which subsequently ended up in the back of
    the net.
    The ref (Sandy Roy)was a total w****r for 90 minutes. He put up with the 
    constant whinging of Levein & Robertson all day,yet had the audacity to 
    book two Celtic players for dissent !!
    He also booked three other Tims for their 1st tackles of the match,and
    overlooked Iain Baird clugging Coyne off the ball to the extent that he
    didn't even speak to the cuprit !
    
    Celtic take on Motherwell in midweek,and then Airdrie on Saturday &
    must look to taking 4 points from these games in order to maintain a
    serious challenge for the title
    
    Hearts,Rangers,Aberdeen & hibs all face each other in the coming week &
    points will obviously be dropped.

       offence rather than a booking.I must agree though,the ref was a 
       w***er who lost total control of the game along with the stand side

    Celtic take on Motherwell tonight at Parkhead desperate for two points
    after their miserable display at Tynecastle last Saturday.
    They'll have to do without the services of new signing Tony Mowbray
    who's out with an achilles injury.
    Manager Brady has Derek Whyte & Dariusz Wdowczyk back,but also has an
    injury doubt over John Collins.
    
    The last time the two sides met in the league,Celtic won 2-0 at Fir
    Park with a very impressive display.

 Celtic's title aspirations took a nosedive last night when they failed to
 overcome a stuffy Motherwell defence at Parkhead.
 A mix of bad finishing & superb goalkeeping from Billy Thomson denied Celtic
 the two points that they deserved on both pressure & possession.

 All four goals came in a nine minute spell early in the 1st �. Firstly Charlie
 Nicholas bent a free kick over the wall (with the help of a Coyne deflection)
 & into the net to give the Celts a 10 minute lead.
 The joy was shortlived however,when Dougie Arnott finished off some good work
 by Nijholt by shooting past Bonnar from 16 yards.
 The defence (namely Gillespie) must take the blame for failing to get in any
 sort of tackle though.
 Motherwell went into the lead with their 2nd attack of the match when Bonnar
 firstly held a Cooper cross & then decided to drop it again at Arnott's feet.
 The little striker had no hesitation in blasting the ball into the now empty
 net.
 Two minutes later Celtic were level again with the best goal of the match.
 McStay released Coyne on the left wing with a 20 yard pass,Tommy fired over a
 low cross to the near post & there was the onrushing Nicholas to volley the
 ball quite superbly past the helpless Thomson.
 There ended the scoring,but not the action.
 Cascarino replaced Nicholas (injured) at half-time,and Creaney came on for
 Grant (also injured) later.
 Big Tony saw a brilliant header from an excellent Galloway cross smash against
 the face of the bar. 
 Thomson saved brilliantly from Coyne. Miller saw a header flash just past the
 keepers right hand post. Again Thomson saved brilliantly,this time from young 
 O'Neil & then the keeper managed to throw himself the full length of his goal
 to save a netbound McStay drive.
 Coyne snatched at a dropped ball from Thomson & balsted over the bar from 15
 yards,with the keeper out of his gaol.
 Motherwell almost snatched both points near the end,when Bonnar had to block
 a fierce drive from 8 yards (Arnott again if I'm not mistaken).

 So,with Hearts winning 2-0 at Pittodrie,this leaves the Tic six points behind
 the wee Huns in the league race.
 If Celtic want to maintain a serious challenge this year,they must not allow 
 anymore slip up's against the so called smaller teams,and this must start
 on Saturday when they take on Airdrie at Broomfield.

 A few points from last nights game:

 1) The referee (that wee pratt Douglas Hope with the Jermey Beadle hand) was
    crap.

 2) Gary Gillespie should have been booked for a foul on Arnott when the player
    was on the 18 yard box (Although he wadn't the last man as Galloway was well
    in front of the striker waiting to make a tackle). Rodger Baillie of the
    Daily Record got it wrong when he suggested that Big Gary should have been
    sent off.

 3) McStay got the man of the match,but I would have given it to Gillespie
    (A yard slower these days & mostly to blame for Motherwell's equaliser,but
     still the big fellow oozes class & composure)

 4) Brady MUST rest young Brian O'Neil. The youngster was a passenger for the
    3rd time in the last fortnight. He must now give Fulton a run in the team.

 5) Motherwell fans are all Huns as the place was rife with Union Jacks last
    night.

 6) And on a lighter note.......Apparently Dariusz Dziekanowski has a different
    girl with him at every reserve game these days & has been known to wave to
    her regularly from the pitch.
    And I don't mean before the kick-off or during stoppages.....but actually
    during the match & even once when he was on the ball !!!!!
    If this isn't the actions of a man who doesn't give a toss,I don't know
    what is !!

    Apparently Liam Brady has concluded a deal on the transfer
    of Vinny Arkins from Shamrock ROvers.  Dundee United are entitled to
    50% of the transfer fee, reputed to be 80,000.  As part of the deal
    Celtic will also play ROvers in the RDS (approx another 50/60,000 in
    gate receipts.).  The Celtic board will not conclud the deal until a
    striker is offloaded.
    
    Arkins replaced Lee Power of Norwich in the Irish u21 team last year. 
    From talking to someone who was at the game, Celtic could be getting a
    bargain as Arkins was far more impressive than Power.  QPR bid 500K for
    Power last Friday.

    The big man's had no competition for a place for years,so perhaps the

    I've only managed to get a ticket for Perth once since the new stadium
    opened.
    As for Pittodrie........It's been 5 years since my name was drawn from
    the hat for a ticket up there !!
    
    I should be OK for one ticket for myself for Perth this time,but as for 
    Aberdeen...well I'm not confident at all about getting my hands on one.
    
    My supporters club give two points every time you attend the game,and
    come important/low allocation matches....the ones with the best
    attendance get the tickets.
    
                              

    Pat Bonner has been dropped by Brady for todays game at Airdrie. This
    is sure to alert a few of the big clubs. He might be going through a
    bad patch at the moment, but i believe he is still a first class
    keeper.

    I believe Big Packy being dropped for today's match is just the kick up
    the arse the big man needs.
    He's become too complacent due to the lack of challenge for the 1st
    team position at Parkhead,and a good performance today from his deputy
    Gordon Marshall will be just the tonic the Spider needs to get him back
    to form.
    I don't believe that Brady will drop him for any more than one match
    btw.
    
    Celtic still have injury doubts over 2� million worth of talent in the
    shape of Collins,Mowbray & Nicholas. Young Steve Fulton has been

    With no game in midweek,the Celts are next in action against
    Dunfermline at Celtic Park on Saturday.
    The Pars will have their tails up after picking up 3 out of 4 points in
    their last two games.
    Celtic certainly can't afford to take any chances against the
    so-called-underdogs.....just ask Rangers FC.....(had to get that one
    in)....and must go into this game the same way as they did gainst
    Airdrie,and that is to fight & match the opposition in terms of effort.
    
    Nicholas,Collins & Mowbray should be back in the team at the expense
    of Miller/Casarino,Grant & Whyte.
    I've got a sneaky feeling Gordon Marshall may just keep his place in
    goal ahead of Pat Bonner,but then again,Brady is such a confusing chap

    Chairman Kevin Kelly today announced that they intend to keep McStay at
    Parkhead even if it means making him a millionaire (but does he mean

    Personally I'll believe it when I see it.But as I said in the Everton note,

    Celtic totally outplayed a Hibs team content on playing for a point,but
    failed to turn their superiority into goals.
    Some excellent goalkeeping by 40 year-old John Burridge in the Hibs
    goal,and some absolutely pathetic finishing from Tommy Coyne kept the
    match scoreless.
    
    Their were no real stars in last night's match,but plenty of duds.
    Wdowczyk was playing like a wally,when he was thankfully substituted
    after picking up an injury.
    Galloway had a good game in defence,but his passing was an absloute
    nightmare. Nicholas looks to have put on a stone in the last two
    weeks,while John Collins looked like a million pound flop when he came
    on as a sub.
    Brian O'Neill came back into the team after being rested recently,but
    failed to make any impact.
    Injury prone Gillespie again had to leave the field early after picking
    up a thigh strain. He was replaced by that p***k Morris.
    
    Burridge of Hibs had three top class saves from Coyne,Nicholas &
    Cascarino.

    The way our strikers (& defence) have been playing lately,I think we
    may just be struggling.

    One of Celtic's lowest attendances of the season watched yet another
    lacklustre display at Parkhead.
    If it hadn't been for a double substitution of Miller & Creaney for
    Charlie & the big haddy,we may well have lost the match !
    The score was 0-0 at the time,and St.Mirren were looking by far the
    more dangerous side,when Brady decided to make the change.
    Within a minute,Miller had beaten two men & crossed for Collins to
    volley home the opener,followed in quick succession by three goals in 5
    minutes.
    Creaney scored with two point blank headers after brillaint work by
    Miller,and poor Paul Lambert headed home another after a great Miller
    cross.
    
    The final scoreline flatters believe you me. Here's hoping
    Mowbray,Gillespie,Wdowczyk & Galloway are all available for the next
    four matches !

    No not really a surprise,although I do feel that we were very unlucky
    on the day and indeed could have won the game.
    I believe that Liam will build a succesful side at Celtic in the near
    future..although I fear that it will be without Paul Mcstay.

      I don't know about unlucky,Celtic only had 2 shots on target.I
    thought Celtic had a good spell the last 10 of the first half and first
    15 of the second half.If you do lose Paul McStay It'll will be very bad
    for you as he was the best player on the day.One big misstake was
    playing Cascarino he had 2 good chances and never even got a shot in.
    But as soon as Creaney come on he worried the Rangers defence.What was
    your opinion on the Hand ball and the Penalty?.

    On the subject of penalties I want to know why Hearts did not get one
    when Marshall nearly killed Scott Crabbe in the box. What to goal
    keepers have to do to get sent off or booked? Crabbe was penalised for
    foot up but his foot was a lot lower than Marshall's!! Marshall reminds
    me of the infamous West German keeper in the West Germany Vs France
    world cup semi final. 
    
    On the game as a whole Cetlic were flattered by the score. If Hearts
    had not eased off in the last quarter the score could have been 0-4
    instead of 1-2. I admit that Celtic had the most of the first 30
    minutes but that only created one chance which was brilliantly saved by
    Henry Smith.
    
    Hearts were already starting to dominate the match before Galloway was
    sent off. 

    I thought that Hearts would've got a penalty for the Marshall incident
    too, but Celtic also had a claim denied in the first half (tackle from 
    behind in the box, names escapes me). 
    I thought Celtic had the best of the first half but didn't create
    chances but were also not under any pressure (apart from 1 or 2
    breakaways) however the 2nd half was different. When Hearts hit their
    'purple patch' they destroyed Celtic and looked like a team wanting to
    win. 
    I think the loss of Mowbray and Galloway (less so) was the turning
    point. Galloway could be a very good player if he learns to control
    himself, the sending off was fully justified. The Hearts played
    (marking Galloway) didn't deserve a booking when Galloway fell over
    him. I now see why the Tic fans wan't McStay to stay, he's in a
    different class. As for Cascarino, I don't think I've ever seen such a
    donkey in my life. He was worse than useless......
    
    Apart from getting soaked I enjoyed the game.

    Dziekanowski.It's now up to the Polish striker to decide if the terms
    suit him.
    I think it's disgraceful how Brady has stuck by that big fud Cascarino,
    yet didn't give the gifted Jackie a run in the 1st team.

    For our overseas readers (and to give me something to write in this
    topic that everyone else seems to have forgotten the number too !!):
    
    Celtic won the Tennents Indoor six-a-side soccer tournament on Monday
    last.
    Their final group qualifying match ended up in a draw, 3-3 against St.
    Johnstone.
    The then disposed of Motherwell 8-5 in the semi, to face St.Johnstone 
    again in the final after the Perth men had disposed of the
    Hunswithootthebusfarefae Edinburgh in the other semi.
    Celtic went on to lift the trophy by defeating the Saints 4-2.
    Joe Miller won the man (or boy !) of the tournament scoring 10 goals in
    the process. 
    
    God, here's hoping for an emphatic win today so I can have something

    departure? As I understand it, he has gone in a straight swop for Tom Boyd 
    of Chelsea. Any reactions? Is Boyd worth it? After all, we spent a million 
    pounds + on Cascarino.

    Don't know about Boyd but Cascarino was dreadful IMHO. He just
    moped about waiting for headers, anything on the ground and he was
    useless. He didn't even try. It was obvious from the beginning that 1M 
    was a waste of money. Did Tommy Boyd play previously at Motherwell ?

    I don't normally write in here but I thought this was amusing and
    may annoy some of you lot. It was a point the Brian Dempsey was
    questioned on about the site that he had proposed (while still
    on the board) for the new stadium. The chap asking the question
    was quoting figures around the 1.6million mark for the site alone
    and said that Celtic knocked it back because the were well informed 
    that the economy was in a bad state and land prices would drop and
    have done. The banter went back and forth and eventually Mr Dempsey
    said quite calmly that he was on the board of Celtic at the time and
    it would have been in his best interests as a director and because
    he could afford it to give the land to the club for free. 
    	Yet another piece of tremendous business on the parts of the
    White's and the Kelly's.

    Celtic came out tops in this thoroughly entertaining cup tie at
    Parkhead after totally dominating the match for most of the 90 minutes.
    Really the scoreline does them an injustice. They had so much
    possession, they were virtually camped in the United half for at least
    90% of the play.
    However, the ususal, our failure to turn our superiority into goals was
    once more there for everyone to see.
    Creaney had three excellent chances in the opening quarter, and Coyne
    likewise.
    The goals when they did come were far from spectacular.
    A cross from the left, Van de Kemp in the United goal fluffed it, and
    there was Creaney to head home from all of 8 inches.
    United's equalizer came out of the blue. Jim McInally taking a knock
    down from a header on the edge of the box, loosing control, only to see
    the ball break to the Fat Finn who wrong footed Marshall with a right
    foot shot.
    From my reckoning, that's the 1st goal the big man has let in, in 552
    minutes of football.
    Celtic laid seige on United's goal for the rest of the match, apart
    from a breif 5 minutes respite mid-way through the second half.
    The inevitable happened six minutes from time, with United looking to
    take the game to a replay (weren't they always ?).
    A cross from Miller on the right, and there was Tommy Coyne to notch
    his 19th of the season by outjumping two defenders to nod the ball past
    the off balanced keeper.

    It was moved from saturday to allow live coverage by satellite TV.

    Even better is that Doherty has said that "it is fair to assume" that

    Any kind of shake-up of the current Parkhead board would be a vast
    improvement on what the long suffering faithful have had to endure
    since the reign of Desmond White as club chairman.
    
    However, Doherty didn't endere himself to the fans on Last Friday nights
    Scotsport extra-time programme, when he blurted out his intentions to
    that well known Hun scumbag, Gerry McNee.
    I believe some things had to be said immediately, but to say them to
    this clown was not the correct thing to do.
    
    I hope Doherty, Low & Brain Dempsey all win palces on the board, mainly
    because they are good business men, intelligent & forward thinking........  
    ............but mainly coz they've got cash that they are willing to

    HI ALL,
    	   It is nice to see that the boardroom-ballyhoo has not affected
    	the recent good run of performances by the team (8 games without
    	defeat, 20 goals for and only 3 against),who once again showed that
    	they are by far the best footballing side in the country (even
    	under very difficult conditions against Hibs).As far as the power
    	struggle is concerned, there are only two things that worry me
    	as follows;
    
    	1) Will it influence Paul's decision whether to stay or go.
    
    	2) Will it give the board another excuse to postpone the stadium
    	   anouncement.
    
    	Personnally I think they should cut the c**p and install seats at
    	Parkhead similar to what is happening at Hampden because let's face
    	it, you spend less than 1% of your annual time at a football ground
    	and most fans would stand on their heads to see good football, 
    	winning performances and trophies.We've always been the poor
    	relations off the park compared to Rangers in terms of hard cash
    	and that is not going to change overnight no matter who is elected
    	to the board (I thought being the heroic underdogs was part of our
    	heritage).
    
    	On the playing front I feel Brady is now getting his act together
    	combining a passing game with good old fashion agression and a will
    	to win.I'm hopeful that we can win the Cup and finish in second
    	place in the league.

    At the moment the media is the best allie that the Dempsey and co
    have got.
         Remember it was media pressure that forced change at Ibrox about

    I am in total agreement about the playing side just now at Celtic.
    Liam has the basis of a very good Celtic team and he should not be
    judged this season.I think that over the next 2-3 seasons that we will
    see the reasurgence of Celtic as a major footballing force is Scotland
    (maybe we can even do better in Europe).I now think that our defense 
    is probably the best it has been in years(pity Paul Elliot had to go)
    ,our midfield is strong and our front players are doing a good job.
    I think that Paul Mcstay will sign another contract with Celtic and 
    probably finish his career at Parkhead.
    Now to the boardroom war.............
    IMHO its about time the club had shares made available to the general
    public.We need vast amounts of cash and some drastic (and long overdue)
    action must be taken.The current board members are in some bloody state
    and this does not augur well for the critical period that has now
    arrived.
    Recently there has been to much slagging of one certain gentleman named
    gerry.Imho he does critisise Celtic alot but he also treats other teams
    the same way when there are problems which he thinks should be
    reported.Dont get me wrong...I don't like him or his style ,but I
    believe that he is only trying to bring difficult topics to the publics

    was missing, he would have been accused by Gers supporters as being
    pro-Celtic..its virtually impossible in Scotland to be percieved as
    neutral, when it comes to Old Firm matters.
    
    Apparently Mowbray had a good game (according to the English press),
    and was a key element in snuffing out Hateley..was this right ??.
    
    Now imagine in the next game, Mowbray was out injured, Hateley played a
    stormer, and scored 2 goals in a 3-1 win to Rangers...wouldnt you say
    (and perhaps want the media to point out) that Celtic were handicapped

    A week on tuesday the big huns will just give the wee huns the two

    1.  Dream on Neil, you've now absolutely no chance of going to
        Europe, unless you're planning a trip to Eurodisney with all that
        OT cash ?
    
    2.  Celtic today unveiled their ambitious new plans for a 100 million
        pound space age stadium in Cambuslang.
        It's to be built in two stages with two 16,000 seater stands being
        built first, followed by two smaller stands behind the goal both
        capable of holding 10,000 each.
    
        My first reactions to the announcement were a bit sceptical, but
        I've since had time to read & discuss the venture & have now came to
        the conclusion that perhaps it's feasible
    
        If this new super stadium does become reality, there is no doubt
        that it will be the best stadium in the UK, and probably Europe for
        that matter. However, we're gonna have to wait a while to see if it's
        all a pipe dream or reality.
        The first stage of the development is expected to be completed by 1994,
        with the second phase by mid 1995
        Where the money from this venture comes from is a little more
        complicated, with a series of debentures,grants & business inputs 
        supposedly raising most of the cash.
        The stadium plans also include a 200 room hotel, car parking for
        4,500, a petrol station, shops, cinemas, bowling alley, offices
        & confernence centre.
        There is a train station situated close to the site, with another
        one planned for.
        The site is being criticised by some people as not suitable due to
        contamination of the land itself, plus the amount of cash it will
        cost to supply electricity from the East end of Glasgow to the
        site.
    
        If they pull this one off, then I think the board wil have put one
        over on their media & newspaper critics (& I'm one of their biggest)
        for once & for all.

    	one of Europe's great clubs. Why are clubs in the UK so
    	blinkered as to the impact of such a venture? Look at what
    	can be done (ie. Milan's San Siro etc.)

    	and the future's looking quite rosy on the playing side. Now
    	it appears Celtic want to launch the club into the 21st century
    	about 6 years early.

    The new stadium SOUNDS great. I have a suspicion though that it will
    never be built for the following reasons :
    
    	a) No planning permission yet.
    
    	b) �4M needs to be spent before a brick can be laid. This to cover
    the costs of filling in mine shafts beneath the site, diverting a
    main electricity cable, some form of flood control as the site has been
    flodded on at least one occasion in the past.
    
    	c) Where do a club who are �5M in the red get �100M to build a
    stadium.
    
    	d) Does Glasgow need another "Super-stadium" with Ibrox already
    built and Hampden set for a major facelift.
    
    
    I've been a fan all of my life, and have had to face many
    disappointments as a Celtic fan. I'm bracing myself for this one. My
    bet is that planning permission will be refused and the board will
    breath a sigh of relief as they will be able to pass the blame for the
    club having a crap stadium on to someone else.
    
    I'd like to be proved wrong though.

    The plan is to have Hampden all seated & completely covered within the
    next two years.
    But.....it'll still look terrible from the outside & I assume the
    toilets & turnstyles etc...will still be a shambles.

Saturday saw me at Parkhead for the 3rd time this season but this time
I was not there to see the Jam Tarts (I was therefore a neutral
observer). This did not stop me enjoying the afternoon with Hearts
claiming their place in Europe.

The way Celtic played they were lucky to finish 3rd rather than unlucky not 
to finish second in the league.

The afternoon saw Celtic complete their own trebble:
    o no Paul McStay.
    o no European football (unless you class a friendly 
      with Man Utd. as European football).
    o no new stadium.
    

   Hardly Neutral Ian!

   Anyway Hearts deserve their place if only for being the most improved
   side in the league. Mind you they'll probably go out in round 2 with 
   all the other Scottish sides.

   According to today's Daily Express, Scotland will be allocated an 
   extra UEFA spot due to the restructuring of Europes borders and in 
   particular Germany.

   This would mean that Celtic would indeed be in Europe albeit by 
   a "dog's chance".

   The decision is to be ratified later this month.

    The best day of the season so far for the Lions of Lisbon.
    
    The Gallagher in question is Kevin Gallagher of Coventry City, ex
    Dundee Utd. A classy player who seems to have grown about 6 inches
    since leaving Clootie City about 2 years ago. He looked every inch a
    class striker and almost scored a spectacular goal for Scoltand against
    Romania. He has had some great strikes for Coventry and was tempted to
    leave for one of the larger English clubs but decided to stay and
    fulfill his contract. A wasted Scottish talent whose talents could be
    well utlised in Cambuslang.
    
    As for McStay, I'd rather have 3  million players on the park and sell
    him any day, esp in defence. Without a doubt the best player to grace
    Scotland since K. Dalgliesh, but money is money, put up for auction
    after an outstanding European Champioship you will see the highest
    price ever payed for a British player, better that Trevor Steven and
    David Pratt Superglued together. The fee will only have to be 3 X
    salary or something like that if only 1 club are interested, I do not
    think you will find this is the case with McStay.
    
    Here's to a successful year in Europe and I'm sure we will last twice
    as long again in Europe as the huns as we did last year, matybe even
    see the Hibees in San Siro.

    Surrounding a man of McStay's calibre with such choice talent as
    
    ..Derek Whyte, Peter Grant, Joe Miller, Cascarino, ... will undoubtebly
    have a balancing effect on the overall performance of the team.
    
    Only an overall improvement in the quality of the whole squad will see
    the glory days return, this can be achieved by selling McStay for 4.5
    million + and buying in mere 3 mortals @ approx 1.5 million.
    
    Celtic have easily the best midfield in Scotland ( or Britain according
    to L.B. )with McStay or with some half the quality of him. We probably
    have the 3rd poorest defence ( Getting better though, the Huns having
    by far the best ) and the 4th best front line  ( Huns having by far the
    best again ) .

    have that together there's no reason why we cant start making our
    impressive run at the beginning of the season and not when the league

    I read in last week's Celtic View that, the club are spending over 
    one million pounds on ground improvements.
    Apparently, with the work being done on the main stand to update the
    base from wood to concrete, toilets, turnstyles, food bars & updating
    the training facilities at Barrowfield, the figure could run in excess
    of that.
    It seems to me that the Cambuslang venture was all talk & that we'll be
    staying at a re-furbished Celtic park in the years to come.
    
    No club spends over a million in one close season & then moves off to
    another stadium two years later.

    I would just like to say that Celtic have simply signed the best
    midfielder in Scotland (and among the top 5 in Britain). The fact that
    he IS Scottish makes him THE best signing that any Scottish club could
    have made with the rules about foreign players becoming even more
    stringent. After all, if that reasoning applies to an out-and-out
    puddin' like Big McHairson then surely it can be applied to the Maestro
    himself.
    I still think we need a defender and a forward though to really
    challenge next year. I'm a great admirer of both Gary Gillespie and
    Charlie Nicholas but they are not totally reliable from a fitness

    Celtic beat Manchester City 3-1 at Tolka Park, Dublin last night in
    their 2nd match of the Irish tour.
    Charlie, Coyne & Morris (Again !) were the scorers.
    Still to play...Cork on Tuesday & UCD on Thursday before heading home.
    
    

    
    Celtic won the 3rd game of their Irish tour last night beating Cork
    2-0 in front of 6,000 fans.
    Coyne & Boyd the scorers in a match that was played in a substitute
    stadium due to Cork's new one not being ready for use as planned.
    The Celtic team had to change in a Portacabin & get straight back onto
    the bus after the game to go back to the hotel for a shower. 
    I think if this had been any other side, they would have refused to
    play. But because of Celtic's relationship with Irish clubs, they went 
    ahead with the match although Brady was far from happy at the end of
    the game.
    Tommy Coyne kept up his goal a game record & with Creaney not managing
    a goal yet,Coyne (if not sold to someone else in the next fortnight)
    should have a good chance of being the main striker along with Charlie
    come the Hearts game on August 1st.
               
    Next match v University College Dublin tomorrow.
    
                     

    
    Re -1, John it's actually Cork's new stadium.  That was the opening
    game but judging by what I saw on TV last Saturday it's not ready yet.

    It's a new stadium.  City bought the Farm in Bishopstown from UCC. 
    There are plans for a 24,000 all seater ground.  The initial plan is
    5,000 seats for this season.
     
    Turners Cross is also getting a major facelift.  There are rumours of
    another Cork team in the L.O.I. for 93/4.

    I saw in today's Glasgow Herald that Celtic fielded an Albanian
    defender who "...looked the part".  Does anyone have any more info on
    this guy and whether or not he will be signed on a permanent basis.

    The guy (can't remember the name) is on trial with a view to signing.
    He apparently left his country a few years back & signed for Lyon of
    France.However, due to contract/permission from previous club in
    Albania not being available he only ever played for the reserve side.
    He can play defence/midfield, and Brady may sign him if Derek Whyte
    decides to leave.
    He saw him in a match for his country against Eire & was impressed.
    Figures of around �200,000 are being quoted in newspapers as a possible
    asking price.
    On the transfer front, Peter Grant's proposed move to Norwich is off
    (Damn !)..Don't know why, probably money !
    Wdowczyk, Coyne & Morris are still operating on monthly contracts &
    Chris Morris has said in the press that if Celtic make him a reasonable 
    offer, then he'd like to stay (Damn again !).
    No sign of any big signings by Liam, but then again, with the money
    it cost to keep Paul McStay & no money coming in from players going, 
    Brady probably was told that he wasn't getting much to spend.
    

    
    Celtic won the last match of their Irish tour last night defeating
    UCD 1-0 in Dublin. Mark McNally was the scorer just before half time in
    a match played in front of 3,000 fans.
    Rudi Vata, the 23 year-old Albanian trialist, had another good game in
    defence & Liam Brady will discuss whether or not he signs him with Tommy 
    Craig & Mick Martin.
    Tommy Coyne failed to keep up his goal-a-game record when he missed a
    1st half penalty.
    He shot wide after Fulton was pulled down in the box by a defender.
    Coyne has stated that if Celtic don't increase their pay offer, then
    he'll leave (If anyone will have him that is).

    John, according to reports this was Celtic's worst display of the tour. 
    UCD are a 1st division side here (we have a premier and first division)
    and are a team of students. The oldest player was 24.  Celtic didn't
    play well but to their credit played football.  Apparently Brady likes
    teams to play the way he did.

    7am...it's wet...I'm tired...and I haven't got a carry-oot !!
    The coach pulls up & I get on, grab a seat & settle back for the 4 hour
    journey to Middlesbrough.
    At least my pals have some liquid refreshment that they don't mind
    sharing with me.
    Three bottles of Becks, a half litre of white wine, a couple of swigs
    of Buckie, 2� hours of the Wolfetones & five visits to the toilet up the
    back of the bus later, and we're in Teeside.
    The Police make us pull into a layby, and wait for a another couple of
    buses to arrive so as they can escort us into the centre together.
    We arrive at the park at 11:30, the match kicks off at 1pm, so we're
    all off on a mad rush to find a pub or somewhere to get some grub.
    We found a chip shop, scoffed down a sausage supper, slagged a fat
    Englishman with a Rangers top on & then set off to find a boozer.

    We found one (an open one !!) at 12:00, slurped down two pints of lager
    (And not a bad pint at that), and then made our way back to see the
    match.
    We didn't get into the stadium (and I use the term stadium loosely)
    until 5 past 1, but the match hadn't started due to the queues outside.
    The teams came onto the park 5 minutes later & awaited the arrival of
    Big Mogga !
    The man came out to thunderous applause from both sets of supporters , 
    especially from the 10,000+ Celtic fans who had made the journey South.
    The spectacle was a joy to behold as the thousands of shirt sleeved
    Celtic fans in green, white & gold belted out Hail Hail continuously
    from start to finish.
    To the match itself, hardly a classic encounter, but Boro looked
    dangerous in the 1st half on numerous occassions.
    Slaven came close with a header, and Falconer too before someone
    flashed a header past Marshall only for it to bounce to safety of the
    keepers left hand post.
    Falconer robbed McStay of possession in the centre of the park in the
    44th minute, he released the centre forward, can't remember his name, & 
    he raced onto the ball before slotting past the advancing Marshall from 
    around 20 yards.
    Celtic should have equalized immediately, but that fud Creaney scooped
    over the bar from 3 yards. Half-time, 1-0.
    
    Celtic brought on Bonner,Whyte & Coyne for Marshall, Gillespie &
    Creaney. They then proceeded to play some quite imaginative football,
    but always managed to break down just short of goal.
    
    Wee Joe Miller came on for O'Neil & Celtic at last were looking good.
    The equalizer didn't come until six minutes from time, but it was well
    worth the wait.
    A Miller corner out to the edge of the box, Mogga sent a powerful
    header goalwards & Coyne flashed a overhead kick past the helpless
    keeper to send the Celtic fans delerious.
    Celtic threatened to score another as they laid seige on the Boro goal
    for the remainder of the game, but they just couldn't find the goal
    they deserved.
    The match ended & Mogga came over to the fans to show his appreciation.
    He did this by throwing his shirt to the crowd (Does this mean he's
    leaving btw 8*))
    He then went to the other end of the ground and took the acclaim from
    the Boro fans.
    Half an hour later, & we were back on the buses heading North. 8 pm I'm
    back in the Commercial Inn, Fauldhouse.........11:30 pm, I'm well on
    the way to being a rubber man 8*))

    Celtic FC once more to blame for thousands of fans missing the start of

    them all for that matter).
    A friend who arrived at the gates at 7:30 didn't get in until 8:20 &
    missed both goals.
    When are they gonna realise that 40,000+ crowds arriving from 7pm
    onwards, require all the turnstyles to be functioning or a potentail
    riot could be on the cards !
    Next report from Tynecastle, Edinburgh, where I'm gonna be standing in
    the Gorgie end (with my mouth shut) due to not being able to get a ticket !

    JJ- RE.Turnstiles at Celtic Park.
    
    When I were a lad....
    
    I used to work on the Parkhead turnstiles for season in season 90/91
    when I was at Uni.  The organisation (and I use the word lightly) is a
    joke.  They have the same amount of operators every week, regardless of
    the opposition. That is, there will always be the same amount of
    turnstiles open whether it's a pissing wet wednesday night against
    Dukla Pumpherston Sawmill and Tannery or a scorching saturday afternoon
    against Hearts in the Scottish Cup.
    
    	There is one exception to this. There are always LESS turnstiles
    open for Old Firm games.  This is because it is reckoned that there
    should be two people per turnstile at the Rangers end for protection.
    Obviously, if there is a constant amount of operators, it means that
    Celtic turnstiles remain unopened.  
    
    	Things may have changed last season, I didn't go back after having
    to operate the Rangers turnstiles when we played them twice in
    succession. (Once in the Cup and once in the League). You may remember
    that Rangers had several players red-carded in the first game and this
    did not make for a convivial atmosphere the folowing week. After 90
    minutes of verbal assault, spitting, torn tickets, questioning of my
    mothers sexual preferences etc I decided that any more visits to Celtic
    Park would be as a spectator and not as an employee.  In their wisdom,
    Celtic decided that there was no need to put stewards in the Rangers
    end that week and so the Turnstile chaps were on their own.
    
    	Before I get shat on by some irate Rangers fans, I will say that
    most of their fans were actually quite pleasant, some even apologised
    for the behaviour of the others.

    the day oot.
    Lager a plenty, exotic dancers showing off their private parts, Warren
    (a Celtic man) wearing a Hearts scarf with the intention of throwing it
    away when in disgust when Celtic scored (and he did !),...Oh an a victory
    as well + my bet with SID from last season being wiped out by a doubles

    Celtic have sold reserve team striker Gerry Britton to Partick Thistle.
    The young striker has scored 120 goals for the reserves in the past
    few years, but Celtic didn't want to stand in the way of the lads
    ambition to play regular first team football, so they allowed him to
    leave.
    A fee as such has still to be decided, with the outcome likely to be
    decided by tribunal.
    Still on transfer news, and Celtic have managed to get a work permit
    for Rudi Vata the Albanian who was on trial with them on their tour of
    Ireland.
    A fee of �200,000 is being negociated between Celtic, his agent & his

   This is our fourth 1 - 1 draw so far this year. ( O.K two were in 
   friendlies).

   Not championship winning form..

   Our front players looked slow , Coyne livened things up a bit     
   but should be shot for his attempt when clean through ( similar to against 
   Aberdeen ),Charlie looked totally out of it, Miller sent in enough crosses 
   but to whom?
    
   Agree withthe comments regarding the Super League not changing anything.
   Motherwell played a good system to save the points but it was agonising 
   to watch. 

   How many do you think will be at Hampden on Wednesday for the Stirling 
   game or infact at any games with teams with a like mind to Motherwell
   i.e. up to seven across the back including a sweeper.

   Davy Cooper's cross for the Motherwell game was one of the few highlights.

    What are the Celtic's fans opinions on their team supposedly being the

    In the Sam McCulloch testimonial to-night Auchinleck Talbot beat Celtic
    4-3. Celtic had two first team pool players in their squad. By all
    reports it was a great game and most certainly not a friendly.
    Well done Celtic for honouring a great Junior who is now retired, it
    seems there was a crowd of about four thousand.
    

    
    I heard on Radio Clyde that Celtic (Brady) are having talks with a
    striker from Middlesboro' today.
    
    Derek "TUBS" Johnston said that this player has only scored 3 goals
    since last November and that he played with Hull before Boro.  
    
    They are meant to be trying to swap him for one of Celtics "Month to
    Month contract players", but who they did not say.
    
    Anyone know who this striker is and what he is really like ? What
    player do you think will be leaving Parkhead if this deal goes through ?

    Celtic have been interested in this Payton fella for a few years now.
    
    I remember Scotsport reporting this a while back and showing the 
    odd Hull game.  Payton was the Charlie (aged 22) lookalike, a la' perm 
    etc........ I do remember him scoring a goal or two, but nothing to 
    suggest he's a world beater !
    
    I was at the Mowbray Testimonial and I can't remember if he played, so he
    must've made a big impression !!!
    
    Not too sure about this new found alliance with Boro'.........they were
    a half decent side that day, but it seemed when Celtic stepped up a
    gear, they began to struggle.........I didn't see anyone on show who 
    I would've paid a huge amount of cash for, the best of their bunch 
    was the big chappie who used to play for Aberdeen, he looked OK and again 
    he is a Scot, as per the UEFA rules.    
    
    Looks as though TC will be on his way, what with him playing for the
    Republic and the arrival of Payton.     If this is the case Mr.
    Brady must ensure Coyne's replacement can grab 20+ per season, if he's
    not sure, then keep him !

    afternoon as Slater is currently travelling to Parkhead. He is valued
    at �1.5 million and this is about the 3rd time Brady has been connected
    with the player.  
    
    If Slater is to play in Europe for Celtic, he will have to sign a
    contract today as today is the deadline for newly signed players to
    be approved to play in European competitions.
    
    
    Will Brady be able to play a strong enough side in Europe with all the 
    "classed foreign players" he is looking at ?
    
    
    Celtic have been drawn at home against Dundee in the next round of the
    cup with the possibility of meeting Hearts in the following round.

     How much did it cost to get in to the Stirling game on Wednesday
    night??.At a guess I would say the same as Rangers were being charged.
    It was costing us 9 and 10 quid and I'm glad to see both sets of fans
    protesting with there feet.I wonder when the last time was that the old
    firm played at hampden on consecutive nights and pulled in less than
    20,000. This is just another example of The old firm fans being
    exploited for as much as small clubs can get out of them.

     Wonderful decision by the Police to segregate the fans by giving the 
     Stirling fan(s) the traditional covered Rangers end.

     That should really encourage people to return to Hampden as the

    Creaney scored both goals with headers. Payton collected the ball
    about 30 yards out, passed to Miller on the right, he carried the ball
    towards the box and fired in a cross which Creaney charged through
    Utd's defence and slotted it home from about six yards. The second
    was a high cross from the left to the back post and a looping header to
    the near post with the Utd keeper (Main ?) rooted to the spot. Payton
    played well nearly scoring in ten seconds. A lobbed pass over the
    defence from kick off. He ran in with Main ? advancing, he managed to
    touch it past him, but it was a bit off target and woudn't have
    reached the line anyway. He had a good shot also, from 25 yards that
    went inches over. All in all a good solid game from Celtic which seen
    them to the top of the league, still unbeaten and the Hun, Aberdeen and
    of course Utd getting beat, the 3 teams that were above them on
    saturday morning 8*). I'm sure JJ can elaborate a bit more on this.8*).

    I was nightshift on the Friday night & couldn't get out of my kip in
    time for the match.
    Colin's report sums it all up though from what I saw on TV.

    Let me first of all start by saying that the board are up to their old
    tricks again regarding official attendances at Parkhead.
    Celtic Park holds 53,000 (officially), and I'd just like to know where
    they were gonna put another 20,000 supporters last night !!!
    There was at least a 40,000 crowd at last nights match, with the
    Rangers end the only real place with any kind of room.
    
    To the game however, and although the scoreline may make it look like a 
    poor match, it was far from it.
    Dundee were a pleasure to watch as they made an effort as an attacking
    force, which is more than can be said for some visitors to Glasgow.
    They should have scored twice through Rix & Dodds, but both men wasted
    their chances by shooting wide.
    Celtic's goal was a peach. A McStay & Miller move, a cross whipped
    in towards the six yard line, a Creaney shot, Leighton made a
    brilliant save (the first of many) & new boy Andy Payton slammed in the
    ball from about 8 yards.
    Leighton performed brilliantly in goal for Dundee & undoubtably saved
    them from a hiding (which they wouldn't have deserved).
    Alan Gilzean must have modelled himself on Iain Ferguson or John Brown,
    coz he acted like them all night & was deservedly sent off after
    kicking Peter Grant in the back. He'd been booked earlier & had to go.
    
    Tony Mowbray had to leave the field to have stitches inserted into a
    head wound. These promptly opened up again as the big man won headers
    galore & he had to be replaced at half-time. His replacement was none
    other than Stuart Slater.
    He contributed well, but will obviously take some time to settle in.
    He's very fast on the ball, has excellent control & was very close to

           do Celtic continue to get away with giving low official
           attendances ? It surely must now be law to have some kind of
           computerised gate control in the wake of the Taylor report.

    Grant was in because Gillespie, Wdowczyk & Galloway were all injured.
    Our back four had a very peculiar look to it in the 2nd half last
    night, with Brian O'Neil & John Collins as full backs, and our usual
    full backs in Boyd & McNally playing centre-half & sweeper
    respectfully.
    
    I think if Galloway is fit, then he'll play from the start on Saturday
    with Slater on the bench. If he isn't fit then I fear Grant will hold
    down a place as Brady will go for the experienced guys for this one.
    
    Charlie was dropped again last night (as was Coyne) & wasn't even on
    the bench.

    Rumor has it (Herald newspaper today 21st)that the main obstacle to Celtic's
    Cambuslang venture has been lifted.It appears a Manchester Holding
    company had first refusal to the land 3 years previous but a agreement 
    has been struck which enables Celtic to buy the land for 2mill.
    Meaning the First Phase will be completed by the deadline of the

    It's OK I suppose (Looks a bit Inter Milanish), & is a definate

    Celtic are away to Rangers in the 1st Old Firm match of the season
    today.
    They'll have to do without the services of Wdowczyk & Gillespie, with a
    question mark still hanging over Mike Galloway's fitness.
    Peter Grant (Arrrgghhh) is in line for a game. Tony Mowbray is a
    definate starter even though he had to have a dozen or so stitches
    inserted into a head wound, after last weeks Skol cup tie with Dundee.
    Andy Payton & Gerry Creaney should be the main strikers with a possible
    place on the bench for Charlie or Tommy Coyne.
    New signing Stuart Slater will probably be on tye bench again.
    
    The biggest shock could be the return of Pat Bonner in the Celtic goal,
    as Gordon Marshall has a neck injury & faces a fitness test this
    morning to see if he's capable of playing.
    This could be big Packie's chance to either put himself in the shop

   All in all a fair rsult at the end of the day. Rangers certainly had the 
   better of the chances but Celtic played the most of any football that was 
   on show until Durrant came on. Then it went Rangers way for the 15 minutes 
   or so after the Durrant goal with Celtic coming back towards the end of the
   match. 

   Too many highlights to comment on but I thought the best for Celtic were 
   Collins( esp. in defence) , Mowbray , Galloway and Creaney whilst Brown,
   Huistra and Durrant when he came on were tops for Rangers.

   BTW from where I was it looked as if Steven was onside but that's the way 
   it goes. The linesman had his flag up before Steven hit the ball into the 
   net.

    Celtic stuttered to yet another 1-1 draw today, and yet another dropped 
    point against what can only be classed as weaker opposition.
    We've now managed to draw four times in the space of a month against
    Aberdeen, Motherwell, Rangers & now Airdrie.
    When you consider that we were leading in all four matches, Brady must be
    wondering if we have the ability to mount a serious challenge to
    Rangers this season, when we cannot even hold onto a lead (or improve
    on it for that matter).
    We may well look back next May & see ourselves 3 or 4 points off the
    lead & wonder what may have happened if we had won these specific
    games.
    One bonus from todays match was the fact that Andy Payton scored his
    third goal for the club in four matches.
    He really looks the part & I'm sure when Stuart Slater is match fit &
    playing in a midfield alongside Collins, McStay, & Galloway/O'Neil,
    things may improve even more.

    Another point dropped on Saturday,due to the fact that the urgency in
    Celtics' game disappeared after Payton had scored a fine goal.Airdrie
    played with a lot of men behind the ball,but McStay and Collins had
    very little to offer in trying to break down their defence.
	I think that Collins wasn't as effective as he has been in recent
    games due to the fact that Boyd was over in the right back berth and
    Collins didn't get his usual service.
    	I still not sure that McStay is the man to captain the Celts,as
    after Airdrie had equalised,he didn't seem to generate any
    urgency/enthusiasm in the team,even when players were injured he just
    strolled about the middle of the park instead of motivating his
    team.....hand it over to big Mobray and take some pressure off McStay.

    I agree that Paul McStay is not a shouter on the park but I do think
    that the responsibility of being captain has made him a better player
    (if that were possible).As for Mobray being made captain I don't think

    For a long time in this match, the Bhoys seemed destined for yet another
    1-1 draw against lesser opposition.
    That is until the 77th minute, when John Collins got his second of the
    night. A blistering drive from 22 yards beating Andy Rhodes low at
    his left hand post.
    This capped a fine performance by the young Celt & must be a real
    sickener to Andy `Ibrox' Roxburgh, as he AGAIN left the gifted midfielder 
    out of his International plans.
    For me, Collins was man of the match (although Tom Boyd ran him a very
    close second, more on him later). 
    Things had started so well for the Celts with three fine attempts at
    goal in the first 10 minutes.
    The referee tuned down a stonewall penalty in the 12th minute when
    Inglis brought down Creaney. The fans howled in anger, but worse was
    still to come when Slater beat two men & was just about to beat a third
    just inside the box, only to be chopped down.
    Again, unbelievably, the ref waved play on !!!. This was by far the
    worst standard of refereeing I'd saw all season.
    However, the goal Celtic deserved was merely delayed a few minutes.
    A sudden burst of speed by Boyd on the right flank, an excellent cross
    from the Scotland defender, and there was JC to head past Rhodes from
    six yards.
    Things died down a little after that, not a lot more action although
    Payton (having a quiteish game) did come close a couple of times.

    St.Johnstone looked a lot sharper in the second half & after a couple
    of near things they duly equalised, courtesy of this new back-pass
    rule.
    Galloway tried (from 4 yards) to guide the ball back to Marshall with
    his head, he was short, and in popped Paul Wright to make Celts
    suffer for their indecision (Mikey should have blasted it over the
    Terracing !).
    Suddenly things didn't look too rosy. However, JC put paid to my
    concerns with that glorious second goal & then to round things off
    came the third.
    Payton was released by a superb McStay pass, his shot was blocked by
    the advancing keeper high into the air. Two defenders tried to clear,
    but Creaney (having a poor match by his standards) beat them both to it
    to force the ball over the line with his head.
    I don't know if Creaney running to the Jungle (Who'd tore him to
    ribbons most of the night)after he scored, was joy or mere sarcasm.
    I stated earlier that Tom Boyd had a great match. This was underlined
    by his amazing pace & stamina to power up & down the right side of the
    field firing in excellent crosses.
    The lad has been Brady's best signing to date !!

          Why all the furore about Rangers players in the Scotland pool?
    
          Currently, of the six Rangers players included in the Scotland
    pool, 4 of these players gained international recognition BEFORE going
    to Ibrox, namely:
    
                         Goram -------   Hibs
                        McCall -------  Everton
                         Gough ------- Dundee Utd./Spurs
                       McPherson -----   Jambos
    
          That only leaves 2 Who were playing for Rangers when they got
    their first cap. Namely Durrant & McCoist. McCoist only being the top
    scorer in the premier league & Durrant, potentially one of the best
    midfielders Scotland has produced in recent times. Are Rangers to be
    lambasted because they keep Scottish international players in Scotland?
    
          Why is so hard for you to accept that Rangers have a few Scottish
    internationals in their side. I for one watched Gordon Marshall at
    Brockville for years and he doesn't look any better a keeper now than
    he was then. 
    
          Should we not be more concerned about how the team does and not
    whether Rangers or Celtic have more players in it or it just an excuse

    Yet again the faithful have to endure another sub standard performance
    from a team that look world beaters for 20 minutes, and then carpet
    beaters for the rest of the match.
    We really should have been 3-0 up inside the 1st � of the match, but

    The inevitable then happens, and the visitors raise their game, whilst
    ours flounders.
    I came away from the match thinking,"If Hibs can score 3 past us, what

    Gordon Marshall should be smacked around the head with a wet haddock,
    Tony Mowbray could be doing with a rocket injected up his back passage
    and the gifted twosome of Payton & Creaney, should be gifted with a

   JJ, Cologne are going through a "real" bad patch at the moment, they are
bottom in the league after 5 games, and I think they are out of the cup as well.
There keeper Bodo Ilgner has lost his N0 1 spot in the German national team 
after 4 years there and the chap is only about 25. Cologne are having major
problems finding the net, and Celtic should get to the next round..

       I must disagree with your choice of left back (ie. Wdowczyk),due to
    his lack of pace and inability to support the midfield and attack.
    Granted he is a good distributer of the ball and has a fair shot....but
    that's it !When Collins and McStay are looking for support down the
    left flank....he is always 5 mins late at reading the game and the
    chance is lost,whereas Boyd is always there to support that side of
    the park,and that is where Celtic were ceating a lot of chances earlier
    on in the season.This is no longer happening!!!!...why does Brady not
    see this ?
       Boyd looks awkward at times at right back and tends to punt long and
    hopeful balls up the right wing,which rarely find a man.He doesn't have
    the same understanding as he has with Collins and is wasted in this
    position.
       Remedy.....buy a good right back (McNally will do meantime),put Boyd
    to left back,use Shuggy as sweeper or in the reserves.

    I managed to watch most of the game from Cologne on satellite telly
    before work work tonight and Brady must be livid at the way his defence
    gave away 2 goals. Apart from these two unbelievable lapses, the game was
    a bit of a non event with Celtic playing not too badly.
    The most amazing sight however, was the huge number of Celtic
    supporters who had made the trip. Surely we are the only club in the    
    world who could take 5000 fans 2000 miles just to see our team getting
    humped.

      Saw the game live here on German tv, and I thought Cologne were bad but
Celtic were pathetic.. They had so much space most of the time but were content
in holding the ball and passing around midfield. Its true what the German
commentator said, "Celtic were the worst team to visit the Munsdorfer stadium in
a number of years". Remember lads Cologne are playing crap football at the
moment and will continue to do so for a while, but what concerns me more is
where are Celtic going to????? Iam not sure what's going through Liam Bradys
head as a manager, but as a player he was always an attacking one.... 

    Don't tell me it was tactics, the game was a home one for Celtic, the only
time we heard the Cologne fans was during the last 7 mins after they went 2-0
up. One thing for sure the Celtic fans are very loyal, how they can shout and
sing on their team for a solid 85 mins when their playing such crappy football
is beyond me. 

  I really hope Celtic get through to the next round, but after last nights
game Iam not sure they deserve to....

    Dissappointed yes but we should still have a good chance of qualifying.
    
    Brady's tactics last night were obviously containment by leaving only
    Creaney in attack. Celtic never play those tactics and it seemed ( from
    the radio commentary ) that they kept losing possession in midfield as
    there was no target man to hit once we had the ball.
    
    1:0 would have been an acceptable result, as Brady said himself he
    would have been "very confident" with that scoreline, now he is just
    "confident".
    
    Marshall seemed to have a reasonable game, from the reports the defence
    were stationary when the first goal was scored, Marshall then appeared
    to come for all the corners after that, not relying on his defence. Koln
    only seemed dangerous from the set piece and the same old story, quick
    break, two unlucky deflections and theres the opposition player to put
    the ball in, heard it all before, Hibs on Sat.... 
    
    I'll have to wait until the Firmware Tim gets off the Koln bus
    tommorrow to get the report from the horses ass.
    
    As long as we dont have a repeat performance of last year Xamax game
    when if we had taken half the chances we had we would have humped them
    10:0, we can be thankful we're not relying on Cascarino this year

    4500 supporters made the trip to Cologne from Britain.
    I totally agree with you that a large number of soldiers would have

    Just a wee note to add my personal bit in about the (MARVELOUS)Celtic
    fans in Cologne.
       There was about 5-6 thousand fans there watching Celtic play-this
    includes around 500 German and Dutch fans and around 300 ST.PAOLO
    fans(Colognes rivals).
       Any other British fan who might have been there and lives in
    Germany were certainly not there supporting Celtic as they were all
    above us in the stadium with the scarfs and flags you would associate
    with Ibrox or England or NI.
       But apart from that it was a very poor match with Celtic got a lot
    to do in the return leg.

    I know Celtic won 5-4 at the weekend and that Packie Bonner was back in
    goal. Was he to blame for any of the goals? How did he play generally?

    Depends on who you talk to.

    I'd say that he was to blame for the first goal by having a poor
    slap at a cross ball which led to the Falkirk player lobbing the ball
    towards the net.

    In general the team were poor until the last 10-15 minutes when Falkirk
    through the game away (in my opinion).

    At the moment I believe the team are not playing because McStay has not
    been his usual self although Collins has been excellent.

 I expected Celtic Park to look rather empty, after UEFA's restrictions on 
 terraces for European matches. But to my astonishment, the place looked jam
 packed.
 Either the 30,000 fans kept moving from side to side to give this impression,
 or Celtic & Mr.Cassidy are up there old tax dodging tricks again !

 The first 20 minutes were nothing to write home about, but after a fierce John
 Collins drive was parried away by Bodo Illgner, suddenly the match burst into 
 life.
 Cologne had looked the better side in earlier exchanges, but this great effort
 from Collins seemed to give the players & fans the lift they needed.
 The goal we all hoped (& prayed for) wasn't long in coming. 
 A Boyd cross was headed out just passed the 18 yard line, Peter Grant played
 it straight back to Boyd. He crossed towards Mowbray on the penalty spot, and
 the big Englishman nodded the ball down towards McStay 16 yards from goal.
 The Maestro fired home an unstoppable low volley with his left foot to drive 
 the home fans delerious.
 This was in the 36th minute, and we didn't have long to wait before we were
 rejoicing again.
 This time a great through ball towards the goal line from Galloway was kept in
 touch by Andy Payton. He prevented the goal kick by pushing the ball out 
 towards the shy-line. Boyd kept it in play, crossed to the chest of Slater, who
 in turn laid the ball on to the advancing Collins. From the corner of the 18 
 yard box, JC shot for goal. Creaney darted forward, and with the help of his 
 knee, deflected the ball high into the net passed the keeper.

 Half-time 2-0

 The second half wasn't nearly as exciting as the first, but when the 3rd went 
 in, Paradise erupted.
 We had to wait until the 79th minute for the winner granted, but it was well 
 worth it.
 Boyd took a quick throw with the German defence in disaray. Collins controlled
 it in the box, advanced towards the defender, waited on him committing himself
 before side stepping him and prodding the ball passed the advancing keeper.
 The only other real efforts on goal in the second half, were a Boyd shot after
 a good run from the full back, & a cross which went right across Illgner's goal
 & missed by Creaney, McStay & Slater. Both these efforts came prior to the 
 winner.
 In between all this the Germans had 5 corners in the space of 10 minutes &
 looked dangerous. The defence (And Marshall's handling) however, were immense.

 The final whistle couldn't come soon enough, as the German's pushed forward
 trying to get that elusive away goal.
 They nearly scored when the number three pushed the ball over the line 
 following a goal line strumash, only for the referee to blow for a foul on
 Marshall.

 We're in round 2 & the Bhoys can be proud of the way they overcame the 1st leg
 defecit.
 Hopefully this result should give us the lift we need for the up & coming
 league matches away to Dundee & at home to Hearts, in the next 7 days.

    A poor run of form early season combined with the signing of Payton had
    rooled oot Cherlie up until now. He was set for a comeback mid-week due
    to Creaney's poor form but pulled a hamstring in the reserves last
    Saturday.
    
    We have been uncharacteristically poor up at the front in the last
    month while being very characteristically poor at the back. Hopefully a
    return to form by him will make the likes of Creaney who's been slow and
    uneffective and Payton who's just been uneffective.
    
    With all our defensive woes at the moment whats happened to Rudi "Holy"
    Vata, surely he's due a run now as he cant be anyworse than Peter
    Grant, ( pushing Galloway in mid field ).
    
    BTW did anyone notice that yet again Hatley was on an offside position
    when the through ball went to Durrant.... how old's yer Granny

     The Lang Building group have offered Celtic A 50 Million pound refit to
    Parkhead.This is what the boards have been waiting for someone to come
    along and hand Celtic a new stadium.Work would begins right away by
    tearing down the jungle and replacing it with a two tear stand then the
    rest of the ground would be fitted with seats.
     I hope they remember to leave lots of room from the seat in front as
    we all know how you all get carried away when you score and FALL and

     Don't know the full details about this offer, but Celtic have
    declined. They would have to pay back 5 million quid a year for x
    amount of years to Laing so it's hardly free. According to some paper
    or rag I read, the Celtic board held a 6 hour meeting and decided that
    the Cambuslang complex is still the one for them.

    I see Celtic had the begging bowl out last night. An offer was placed
    to stage the Leeds-Stuttgart game at Parkhead. The SFA immediately 
    knocked them back...
    

    With the construction industry in its current state and the upshot of
    the Taylor report I'm sure construtction company's are battering down
    the doors of Premier football clubs chairman's offices. And for a
    construction company in Britain there surely would not be any larger
    prize that a new Celtic Park with extended facilities, possible
    shopping complex blah blah blah. I would not be suprised if most major
    construction companies in Scotland had fired a proposal with the dream
    of landing a high exposure large contract such as the nouvelle Paradise.
    
    I also would not be suprised if certain people with access to the media
    were getting backhanders in these dire times for getting good exposure 
    for such schemes, do not believe that what you see is left to chance....

    You'd be as well looking back to some of my previous match reports on
    games played at Celtic Park, coz it was the same old story in this one.
    
    Celtic started off like a whirlwind. Slater took the ball down the
    right wing, stopped & played a very intelligent ball into Miller just
    inside the box. The wee winger beat one defender & shot high past Henry
    Smith top make it 1-0.
    We had another two good chances minutes later to increase the lead, but
    Creaney shot wide with one of them & Slater's diving header was just a
    foot too high with Smith beaten.
    Hearts never threatened Bonner's goal until that wee excuse for a full
    back, Pratt McNally decided to give away a corner needlessly. The ball
    was crossed into the box, Mowbray could only half clear & the ball fell
    for new signing Alan Preston to thump the ball past Packie (but only
    just) from 18 yards.
    
    Half time 1-1
    
    There wasn't a lot of scoring chances in the second half, but the ones
    that came closest came from Payton (twice), who came on for Miller & 
    McStay.
    Payton, with only the keeper to beat, hit a weak 12 yard shot straight
    at Smith & then saw another effort drift wide when it looked
    easier to score.
    McStay's drive from 18 yards was held comfortably by the keeper.
    
    No more goals, although Celtic laid seige on Smith's goal for the
    entire second half, a point was all they had to show for their efforts.
    
    Footnote:
    
    Iain Baird is the dirtiest striker I've ever clapped eyes on. He
    elbowed the defenders at every opportunity & dived about like a swallow
    the entire match.
    Twice I saw him kick Galloway & Mowbray long after the ball was
    cleared.
    David Syme had a relatively ggod match apart from missing these fouls,
    although I would have thought that the linesmen should have brought the
    matter to his attention at least once !
    

    I would'nt be so hard on McNally, Mowbray was the one again at fault
    here.
    
    Thats the second time in recent weeks he has cleared the ball from
    within hi own area only to see it enter the net from a voley at the
    edge of the box, the last one being Wright from that other Edinburgh
    mob. In all his gung - ho ness he has to remember that any Midfielder /
    Short arse striker worth his salt waits for the cleared ball from a 
    cross on the edge of the penalty area.
    
    He was challenging for this same ball with another Celtic player ( McNally
    again ) which is another one of his annoying habits and the ball spun
    off the back of his head and onto the foot of Preston. Two of Mowbray's
    most frequent abberations at the one time means .... same sad old
    story.
    
    My prescription is two tablespoons of bromide a day and a goose at a
    couple of videos of Paul Elliot in action.

    	Due to a lack of courage and ideas, Dortmund was unable to crack
    	the scottish defense.

    Saw the game on the box last night here in Germany.
    
    A very stuffy, workmanlike performance from the Celts which leaves
    them handily placed for the return leg at Parkhead.
    
    Pluses - showed plenty of commitment from the whole team for 90mins.
           - Were prepared to have a go when the (few) opportunities arose.
           - Didn't let the goal (71 mins) upset the pattern of play.
    
    Minuses - Didn't capitalise on a couple of good chances
            - Had a couple of players booked for needless offences
            - A rather flat-footed defense resulted in the only goal.
    
    You couldn't compare the inept performance against FC Koln in Cologne
    with this one. Celtic rediscovered their spirit this time.
    
    With a forward line containing the likes of Chapuisant (sp?), Dortmund
    will always be capable of scoring - so - Celtic will have to be *very*
    careful at Parkhead.
    
    I have a feeling they'll have to score 3 times (again) to go through,
    as I can't see Celtic (in attack mode) not losing a home goal.
    
    Should be a real pot-boiler in 2 weeks!

going through a weak patch at the moment, they still have more class up front

    couldn't agree more...the reason I mentioned that Celtic will have to

    On the team selection........what is Brady up to overlooking Charlie
    in favour of players who don't have a quarter of his ability, and who
    are not scoring regularly.
    
    Like you, I'd play Charlie from the start and play into his feet up front
    thereby bringing the midfield and other front-men into the game in 
    dangerous positions.

    there's nothing like hard cash to discover that little bit extra when

          Liam's facing five of the most crucial days of his reign this
    week, with Rangers looming on Saturday. He could be out of Europe and
    trailing his rivals, who have a game in hand, by six points in the
    championship. But he won't be sacked - Celtic can hardly afford another

    Essentially a game of 2 halfs. In the first, Celtic got off to the
    perfect start. A goal in 13 mins from Gerry Crainey following an
    intelligent piece of play from a corner. With the exception of
    the last 5 mins of the first half Celtic looked well in command,
    Boyd in particular was giving his marker a nightmare with his
    strong purposeful flank attacking. 
    
    The Germans were lucky not to be reduced to 10 men after Bodo xxxx
    committed two bookable fouls in quick succession. After being
    yellow-carded for the first offence, he was waved away unpunished
    for a slightly worse replica foul minutes later.
    
    IMO the referee bottled his decision. 
    
    The game began to swing in those dying minutes of the first half.
    Suddenly the "Scottish supporters nightmare" swung into life in the
    shape of Chapuisat, who had 2 great chances to score, narrowly missing
    on both occasions. The Celtic defense which up until that time had
    looked well organised and solid, began to crumble and sadly the writing
    was very much on the wall for the second half.
    
    It was all over for the Scots in a frantic 5 minute spell, when the
    Germans exposed acres of space through the heart of the Celtic
    rear-gaurd to score twice.
    
    With 60 mins gone, the game was dead and buried!
    
    To summarise, it was another night for the poor long suffering Scottish
    football supporter in Europe, where the team manage to snatch defeat
    from the jaws of victory.
    
    Scotland have one chance left (World Cup Qual. in Glasgow) to give this
    impish Swiss thorn-in-the-flesh (Chapuisat) a good gubbin'.
    
    What are our chances there I wonder ?

    lets be honest, and remember Im not a rangers supporter, Rangers can
    afford to rest key players for European games, and not risk the Scots
    premier league.  At the present time, Rangers are superior to every
    Scottish team, and while the odd result may make others think
    otherwise, they will walk away with the Scots Prem.  They are now 6 pts
    clear with a game in hand, even if Celtic beat them this weekend, if
    they won the game in hand they are still 6 pts clear.
    
    My hope is that Rangers play to their best abilities in the next
    stages of the Euro Cup, and I will be there, on the sofa, cheering them
    on, as I was last night.

    I don't think I've ever been at a more one sided Old Firm match in my
    life.
    Celtic totally dominated from start to finish, but again failed to put
    the ball in the back of the net.
    The were caught by the inevitable sucker punch when Gordon crossed,
    McCoist nodded down & Durrant poked the ball past Bonner.
    
    Gough cleared a McStay drive off the line, Goram saved brilliantly from
    Slater twice & the wee man also saw an effort clip the bar in the
    second half.
    As I said, it was all Celtic & the fact that it took Rangers 28 minutes
    into the second half to mount there first attack of the second period
    underlines this.
    
    With the Huns now 6 points ahead of us & with a game in hand...I am
    ready to concede the title to Ibrox alreay !!!
    
    Oh well, we'll just have to concentrate on the Cup (now where have I
    heard that before !)

    Announced on news last night.
                                Celtic's dream move to a new super stadium
    at Cambuslang will take place!!!!
       By using amazing business accumen our forward thinking directors
    have managed to find 12 outside backers to totally finance the project,
    whilst still giving Celtic ownership of the ground.
      The only obsticle in the way of the new Paraidice is gaining planning
     permission from Glasgow City Council but as the venture will create
    2000 new jobs and inject 78 million pounds into the local community
    this should not cause any problems.
     
    After this amazing announcement I could'nt wait to read the daily
    ranger and the scottish hun to see Alex Cameron and Co eat large slices
    of humble pie. What did they print ? Absolutly nothing. They just
    totally ignored the whole story. No doubt they will now try their level 
    best to discredit Celtic's plans instead of admitting they were wrong

    Slater gave us the perfect start by silencing his critics and ending
    his 77 game famine with a 7 minute strike.
    
    After that the sheep took control and never really lost it. It was a
    defensive nightmare last night and thats what caused both goals. Last
    nights game was not one of Boyd's best and his was weak tackle that
    allowed Jess through to score 4 minutes later. McNally then had the
    first of many aberations and gave the ball away to Booth who
    slotted it through for Kane to score.
    
    I missed the equlaiser as I was still scoffing my pie, needless to say
    another new boy Vata got his first competitive goal.
    
    Only Slater and Bonner were worth mentioning, McStay and Collins were
    serving pies in the Celtic end and Mowbray also ranked in the nightmare
    proportions.
    
    Creaney hit the post with five mins to go and Bett smacked the bar two
    mins later.
    
    Lucky to get away with a point and it looks like the sheep could go all
    the way this year, find out in two weeks time....

    
    
    
      The equaliser....from what I can remember the ball was crossed in from
    the left by either Boyd or Collins,Payton chested it down and turned,
    the ball spun across to Vata who flicked it over Snelders into the roof
    of the net.After that it was end to end stuff (without doubt the best
    game I've seen all season !),but I thought the Bhoys deserved a penalty
    when Slater was fouled in the box and managed to stay on his feet,only
    to be fouled again !
      I was impressed with Vata's contribution,because when I saw him a few
    months ago I thought he was a real cart horse!He must have been the
    only player in the team who didn't actually waste a pass and played
    simple,but effective football down the right side,until he was moved
    into the right back berth late in the game,because McNally hadn't a
    clue.
      With Gillespie,Mowbray,Galloway,Wdowcyk (sp?) and ONeil either
    injured or suspended for the game against Partick Thistle this 
    afternoon,Brady is really struggling for any resemblence of a defence.
    Maybe they should do what the huns did,....hose the park and say they
    had a burst pipe,and cancel the game ?
      Here's one to get the fans talking.....last weekend le petit merde,
    the Anti-Christ,call him what you want was rumoured to be going back to
    the huns !Yes it's true he did visit Ibrox,but he was actually up
    talking to Celtic !!!!(I got this info from someone who was at his

    Andy Payton opened the scoring early in the 1st half after good work
    from Slater. He picked up on a defensive mistake at the edge of the
    box & squared the ball to Payton.
    From 18 yards, he slotted the ball past Nelson off the inside of the
    post.
    The second was a 25 yard strike from Peter `natty wee demi-wave' 
    with matching sideburns' Grant.
    The ball broke high off a defender & the mad man scored another
    excellent goal to match the beaut he scored at Fir Park a few weeks
    past.
    Thistle pulled one back before the break when fater some concerted
    pressure, Ray `Lovely tackle on Huistra btw' Farningham shot high past
    Bonner from 14 yards.
    In the second half, Thistle played some good football & perhaps should
    have equalised before Gerry Creaney scored with his first touch of the
    ball after replacing Charlie `Let me go to Japan' Nicholas.
    Vata (who played a blinder btw) crossed to PAyton on the edge of the
    box. He turned his marker with speed & squared it to Gerry `Do
    something with that wedge please' Creaney to side foot ther ball past
    the ugly keeper (must be a Hun !).
    Thistle to their credit didn't give up & if Bonner hadn't been in top
    form again, they may well have snatched a point.
    All in all a good two points to snaffle with only one recognised
    defender on display (And even he was playing centre-half when he's
    normally a full-back !)

         Not one of the bhoys better performances,but 2 points never the
    less.Celtic were camped in Dundees half for most of the game,especially
    in the first half without creating too many chances.McStay had put more
    effort into his first half display than he had in his previous 3 games,
    and should have scored after working a nice 1-2 with Vata,but slipped
    when clean through on goal.
         Celtic started the second half on the attack,and within 10 minutes
    of the re-start took the lead.McStay won the ball in the middle of the
    Dundee half,played the ball out to McNally on the right,he swung in a
    cross for Payton who bulleted an unstopable header past the keeper.
    	Celtic had the chances to increase their lead,but Payton headed
    straight at the keeper after some good work by Grant and Vata,and
    then Vata himself hit the inside of the post from an acute angle,instead
    of squaring it to Payton for an easy tap in.
    	Celtic deserved the victory,but a poor back pass by McCarrison (who
    had just come on as sub) had Bonner struggling and nearly cost us a
    point.Celtic are still lacking the killer instinct as well as a good
    poacher.....maybe Tommy Coyne is due for a recall ?

    My father in law said that there was a radio report on the new stadium
    (proposed new stadium that should read), and that there is some form of
    unique funding which results in Celtic having to pay very little
    towards the cost.  How did they manage/propose this ??

    who aren't creating enough chances for the attack to prove themselves.
    Let's hope we play 3 in attack (including Nicholas) against Dundee Utd

    Little wonder you lot are on the way to the scrapheap with a statement 
    like that. If the midfield can't get the ball to two attackers how the
    hell are they going to get the ball to three. Its not hard to work out
    that the third striker would mean a  man LESS in midfield. So, to make
    it easier to understand, the midfield would be playing with an extra
    man less. So with this logical thinking we can look forward to the 'tic
    playing alongside Pollok and Baillieston and the rest of the crap from
    the Central league. Gon yersel, and wait till Auchinleck gets you in

    I just heard on the lunchtime news that Frank McAvennie has pulled out
    of the deal with Partick Thistle after Celtic approached him and he
    is at Parkhead today (Thurs 31st Dec) to talk to Brady. I always
    thought "Maca" was one of the best players at Celtic park in recent
    years and would be be pleased to see him in a Celtic jersey again,
    although I'm sure it will be viewed with a fair amount of sniggering
    by the cream buns et al. I'm glad that Brady appears to have finally
    admitted to himself where our problems lie and if he does play Maca,
    that he has the common sense to play Charlie along-side him. I must
    admit it appears as the act of a man desperate to win the Scottish
    Cup.

    Once again we played Rangers off the park and took nothing from the
    game. I've never seen so many clear cut chances wasted in my life, but
    to be fair that well known Englishman, Morag (who incidentally was
    making 'flute' gestures to the crowd) made some fine saves. The point
    remains though that any strikers worth their salt would have buried
    at least two of the several chances created. Rangers had one good
    chance and scored from it; apart from that Bonner was rarely troubled.
    The fact that Payton is now injured with a hamstring injury paves the
    way for a fresh man up front (Charlie? Maca? Coyne?). The really sad
    thing is that the huns have two recognised strikers whereas we have 
    at least 5; Brady should never need to worry about re-arranging the
    team if a striker is out. What we need is a good old-fashioned poacher;
    somebody like Andy Walker during his first season.
    As for the referee I wouldn't say he was biased as much as completely
    incompetent; the number of bad decisions (for both sides) was too
    numerous to mention but one in particular was very annoying as follows;
    towards the end of the game Eeyun Fergishin who had already been spoken
    to after clattering McStay in the first half, deliberately kicked
    Collins at knee level when super JC was moving away from the moronic
    one with the ball at his feet; the Ref politely requested the ugly one
    to "calm it down"; this was after having recently booked McCall and
    O'Neil for talking back.
    	Anyway, let's just hope the other Frank doesn't cause an upset next
    Saturday.

             Its easy to understand why Celtic have withdrawn. With
    Aberdeen, Rangers and Dundee Utd out of the way it will be much easier

    Looks like the Celtic board of directors have got it just right after
    yesterdays display.
    Withdrawing from the SSL seems the most sensible thing they've done

    Withdrawl. Is this an attempt to stop a takeover. Maybe they've done it
    to get their house in order but three years without a trophy. The team
    should have been sorted out by now, not by bying stopgap players but
    players who are good enough to pull on the jersey. The financial
    difficulties they are in now will be nothing compared to this
    withdrawl. Celtic need to be part of the SSL because this is where all
    the sponsorship money will be in the future. Also a full press
    statement should have been made at the time, "We're pulling out..." is
    just not good enough. 
    Why will they not at least let someone with a business brain, or just a
    brain onto the board. If Murray had moved into Celtic instead of
    Rangers they would be on a sound footing by now. Rangers were going
    nowhere before Murray and look at them now. Lets be realistic, we have
    no sponsor and no money to improve the team. Success breeds money and
    none will be forthcoming at this latest escapade.
    I think i've got my point across, or we'll be joining the ranks of
    Third lanark and Renfrew.

    Awfully quiet in here these days.I know there's not much to shout about
    on the football front fou you lot but what about some honest discussion
    on your thoughts about the board going with the SFL instead of the
    SSL.I thought this note would have been full of opinions on this.

    These notes are used to discuss form, results and team, not the ups and
    downs of politicians with Scottish football, you can account / make
    excuses for on the park activity where it is for all to see and argue
    about, but not shady backroom board meetings etc, get ma drift.
    
    The behaviour of the board speaks for itself however maybe their
    motives are more honourable.
    
    If they say...as they do...that the SFL's proposal meets the
    requirements initally set out by Superleague then why change, after all
    the F.A. premier league hasnt exactly set the world on fire. 
    
    Remember the SSL is voting against a reduced fixture league, their top
    priority, a league they will have to play in next year regardless
    before the proposed SSL starts season 94/95. Why not play in that type
    of format to see how it goes ? Personally I would prefer a 10 team
    league / winter break playing into June, but we all have our own beef
    about that.
    
    It wouldnt suprise me if Celtic had done a deal with the SFA to get
    Hampen for European ties ( if we get there ). That is understandable,
    our board set up prevents people with millions moving onto our board.
    
    All this type of business is worked out behind doors, not really much
    you can say

    I was glad to see MacAvennie enjoy Saturdays match, he never stopped
    smiling for the 90 minutes (probably thinking of next weeks huge pay
    cheque).
    The conditions on Saturday bordered on the farcical & there was very
    little good football played. Any that was, obviously didn't come from
    the Silky Soccer stars of Airdrie, but from the best footballing side
    in the country.
    Looks like Charlie Nicholas' days at Parkhead are numbered by the way.
    When Brady spoke in the press last week about his choice of strikers,
    he mentioned everyone & all their individual strengths & I'm afraid
    poor Charlie didn't even rate a mention.

    far away. Brain Dempsey has been known to be aquiring shares on behalf

    rebels (I like that word) aren't far off accumulating 50%+ of the

   Brian Dempsey ( Ex Actor, ie. Dempsey and Makepeace ) did not
   have enough financial backing and needed another party to go

   the 50+% of the shares needed. In steps Mr What Everyone
   Wants offers him the 20 quid for the other 26% of the shares,
   a set of green lycra strips ( for the home games ) and as many
   pairs of dancing cloggs that they need. All that remains now
   is for Mr Dempsey to sign the agreement and the deal will be
   done. It is expected to go through in about two weeks time, 
   as the stupid sh*te hasn`t got a clue ( which is probably why 
   he`s going back to Celtic ) and as far as my contacts have told
   me, he`s still learning to sign his own name, with the letters
   joined together ( part of the contract )...

      The usual story.....Celtic had all the pressure and countless chances
    in the second half,and only had a Paul McStay goal (just after the re-
    start) to show for their efforts.MacAvennie,Coyne and Slater all had good
    chances in the game (Coyne even rounded the keeper,but still missed) but
    in fairness the 'well keeped was playing a blinder.
      Motherwell equalised in injury time (with only their second attempt in the
    2nd half),but it looked like a bit of a mix up between Gillespie and
    Bonner (I didn't really get a good view of it as I was heading out at
    the time,thinking the 2 points were in the bag).

    At last, a performance that merits a match report. This was my first
    venture into Paradise this year, and Bhoy am I glad I did !
    I've been saying (to myself) for months that we were due to give
    someone a right gubbing, and last night we did just that.
    If it hadn't been for some marvellous saves from Saints keeper, Andy
    Rodes, it could easily have been double figures.
    
    As early as the 2nd minute he parried away a thundering Coyne shot from
    the edge of the box & in the next fifteen minutes pulled off saves from
    MacAvennie, Slater & Coyne again.
    
    In the 22nd minute, Coyne attempted a harmless looking cross, & that 
    daft ex-Hun Ian Reford handled it.
    Our first penalty award in months & up stepped Bomber to fire it past
    the keeper. Two minutes later the referee should have given
    another when Slater was hacked down as he bore in on goal. This time
    the refs bottle went. Fortunately, he made ammends a few minutes later
    when Slater was bowled over by, yes you guessed, that daft ex-Hun
    Redford again. Coyne put the ball in the same place as his previous
    effort, with Rodes deciding to dive the other way.
    The third goal was a peach. A marvellous 25 yard pass from Slater
    through a ruck of players, Macca controlled it & as Rodes advanced, the
    smiling one lobbed the ball over the keeper from 20 yards.
    I thought that would have been the end of it, but up popped Shuggie on
    the edge of the box & after beating one man he thumped it low past Rodes
    from 20 yards.
    
    Half-Time: 4 - 0
    
    The second half was only a minute old when St.Johnstone got into
    difficulties in the 18 yard box. They had three attempts to clear, but
    that big huddy (& ex-Hun) John McClelland boobed & passed it to Collins
    who rifled home from 18 yards. No more goals for the classy Celtic, but
    plenty of fine chances & sometimes acrobatic saves from the excellent Andy
    Rodes.
    St.Johnstone got a consolation goal near the end, and a fine one at
    that, when Vinny Arkins picked the ball up on the wing, beat two
    defenders & fired low past Bonner from 16 yards. 
    
    All in all an enjoyable night, especially as the Hunswithoothebusfare
    lost at Dens.
    Falkirk in the cup on Saturday. It should be a difficult game & here's
    hoping we can get past this one & keep our season alive.

    I was a bit surprised that nobody commented on Charlie's contribution
    to the game against St Johnstone considering he was on for 20 mins.
    Was he that bad that he didn't merit a mention either here or in any
    of the daily newspapers (Daily Rangers etc).
    Nice to see that Brady has finally seen the light and dropped Creany;
    a decision which is long overdue.

    Nicholas' contribution to the match on Wednesday went unoticed simply
    because Charlie's contribution...........went unoticed !!
    He made a few good passes & beat the odd man now & again, but was never
    on long enough to assert himself. He also played an attacking midfield
    role (after replacing Slater), and really didn't see a lot of the ball.
    
    Me finx the only reason he was on the bench was because the reserves
    didn't have a match on !  Come Saturday, no doubt he'll be back playing
    with the 2nd XI.
    
    What a waste of superb talent !
    
    

    It's a sad day when you all get excited after taking 2 points off a 
    mediocre team.It just goes to show what a desperate state your poor
    club is in.

    So the Celts season is over in February, and Liam looks like heading
    for the dole queue !
    
    

    As I stood broken hearted on Saturday at "Dumpsville" after watching
    the worst team in the world beating the once Mighty Celtic who have
    fallen on hard times lately, I heard one of my comrades say "... with
    a bit of practice we could be PURE s***e...."
    
    We can complain all we want about boards of directors and managers and
    coaches but at the end of the day Celts had no strategy, no tactics and
    too many expensive players who were not prepared to take responsibility
    for the situation. Falkirk deserved their win and despite the fact that
    a certain section of their fans persisted in lowering their standards
    to the level of the Govan bunch with dubious hiring policies by singing
    that well known brand of Sectarian songs, I wish them well in the next
    round against the huns from Edinburgh.

    According to reports,Celtic showed a bit more fighting spirit after
    going a goal down and deserved a share of the points.

    This has got to be the most disgraceful game of football (I use the
    term loosely) I have ever seen in my life and if this type of inept
    Celtic performance continues, then I don't see any more than 50
    thousand people attending their final 7 home games. To be fair though,
    Thistle played a brand of football normally employed by the likes of 
    Motherwell or Airdrie with a packed midfield (most of whom were inside
    the box at any one time) and one striker. Lambie said before the game
    that these would be his tactics and he got exactly what he came for, one
    point. The high wind didn't help but this cannot excuse the attitude of
    the players who did what they have done most of the time this season
    particularly at home against lesser oppostion, huffed and puffed for
    the whole 90mins. It must be hard for the players to be motivated with
    only a place in the UEFA cup a possibility; small consolation for a
    season with no domestic honours. But the fact is that the supporters
    are turning out to be entertained and instead are being delivered a
    sub-standard product, which in the long run they will not stand for.
    
    I'm not sure I know the answer to this dilemma but one thing I am sure
    about is that Celtic are missing a captain with the leadership
    qualities of Roy Aitken and although I wouldn't p**s on the man if he
    was on fire, he certainly played a big part in the relative success 
    of the eighties. I'm also becoming bored with the slow build-up from
    the back tactics that Brady has instilled on the players; other teams
    have become wise to it. Celtic's strong point has always been to
    combine skill with speed; one touch football, YES, but do it at such a
    pace that the opposition don't know where the ball is until it hits the
    back of the net. Playing across field balls just gives the other team
    time to regroup, start marking players and retreat to the penalty area.
    We also don't have anyone who can make it to the byline and put over a
    decent cross. Anton Rogan took a lot of abuse as a player but I've
    still to see anyone who could take on a defender, beat him, get to the
    byline and cross the ball back the way as well as Rogan did and still
    get back up the park to do his primary job of defending. I like Boyd
    and Dubchek (excuse the spelling, it's the schooling you know) but they
    are not pacey enough to be used in the attacking full back role that
    Celtic have always been famous for.
    
    My prediction is that Brady will get one more year, during which he
    will win nothing again and will be replaced by Tommy Burns, a man who
    knows what it is like taste glory in a Celtic jersey. There is a lot of
    troubled water to pass under the bridge before that mind you.

    	What have you got against Big Roy?
    
    	Ok he wasn't the most skillful player i've ever seen(understatement),
    	but he was a true Celt and ALWAYS gave 100% for the cause.
    	I wish we had 11 players with half the passion he had for the club 
    	rather than the pretenders we have at the moment.
    
    	I agree with you that we have lacked an insperational(sp)captain
    	since Big Roy was hounded out by the so called impartial media.

    I beg to differ on your suggestion that Boyd isn't pacey enough.
    IMO, he's the best full-back in Scotland at present. He's one of the
    fastest, if not the fastest in the game. His crossing is exceptional &
    he's a relatively strong tackler. As for Wdowczyk (correct spelling,
    better scooling 8*)), he's a sweeper & should be used in that role
    behind Galloway or Mowbray (when fit).
    McNally should be replaced by an experienced full-back & another
    quality midfielder bought to assist Collins & Mr.70% effort himself,
    Paul McStay.
    We really have to off-load players first I know before this will
    happen, but surely we can pick up some kind of cash from the sale of
    players such as Grant, Coyne, Nicholas & Miller.
    
    I don't pretend to have all the answers to our problems, but they won't 
    go away until we make some (or any) effort to resolve some of the issues
    currently surrounding the club.
    The board have got to step down to allow an injection of cash into the
    playing side. Brady HAS to adopt different types of tactic for
    different types of game. McStay has to begin stamping his authority in
    midfield in ALL our matches & our strikers (including Slater) HAVE to
    start scoring regularly.
    
    At this moment in time, I'm merely keeping a low profile & hoping our
    problems begin to slowly disappear, but like you Eddie, I see no pot 
    of gold at the end of what's beginning to look like, a red, white & blue
    rainbow.

    I think this game was ominous for Thistle.   After all, the season that
    Clydebank were relegated they beat (I think) both Rangers and Celtic
    on their own turf.   Partick have now taken 3/4 at Celtic Park, roll on
    Aberdeen ...

    	I see that during the boring matches we've been attending recently 
    you've taken to writing flowery prose (see end of last note); you
    definitely had better schooling than me.
    
    	I agree with some of your points but if you think Tom Boyd is the
    fastest full back in Scotland you've been going to too many snail races
    recently. You're right about the Dove; his best position is at sweeper
    as he has proved so many times.
    
    	In reply to Colm's comments two notes ago, the reason that I
    despise Aitken is because after publicly blaming McNee for hounding 
    him out of Scottish football, he acted in a completely stomach churning
    manner when he returned to St Mirren by saying that what had happened
    about a year before was "all water under the bridge" and was giving
    it the old pals routine (lots of sickening smiles etc). If he had
    simply said that he stood by his comments but was prepared to forgive
    and forget I would still have had some respect for him; as it is he can
    go .......himself. In any case, if he was such a Celtic man who always
    gave 100% for the cause, he would never have left the club a little
    over half way through the season, despite the hounding.
