Conference trucks::football;1

Well may as well beat the blues again to write in their conference.

Can someone tell me why Kendall is buying all the players he took to Man City
with him for Everton. They did nothing at City under him so what is he
playing at? Makes it easy for us to whack them in derby games playing a team
of Beardsley, Nev and the no-hopers!!

Hi everyone!  My name is Stuart Cunningham and I am up here at the CSC at
Warrington.  I am still at school and have worked here in my school holidays
for a year or so.
I have a had a season ticket for 6 years and am currently situated in the main
stand.  I've been watching the blues now for over 8 years.

Transfer news.....Once agian today is the day!!!! Yes today is the day when
Everton are hoping to announce the completion of the transfer of Dean Saunders. 
HK spent yesterday talking to Saunders about personal terms.  This talks are
expected to resume this morning.  Also Sharpie is still 'think over' his
transfer.  Still no news on where Mike Newell is going.

League Fixtures....I have managed to get hold of a copy of the league fixtures.
(I hope I have copied them correctly.!!!)  August looks one hell of a tough
month!

    I believe the League's Fixtures Computer assumes all midweek games are
    Wednesday night.
    
    The Everton v Arsenal match will however be on Tuesday 20th, like the
    Notts County v Southampton game which is also in the initial fixtures
    as Wednesday 21st August.
    
    (According to the latest 1st Division fixture lists I have, that is.)

    Meadow Lane on February 15th, it will cost you the princely sum of
    five pounds to stand on a windswept open terrace corner - the most

    Five pounds - what a bargain !! - it's not just a windswept open
    terrace, don't forget - 90% of the view obscured by the floodlight AND
    prehistoric toilets...
    
    Last time I was at Meadow lane (March 1985 FA Cup quarter final), they

    That wasn't the only thing we gave you that day - Brian Kilcline stood
    in admiration of Andy Gray heading in from 6 inches off the ground :-(

    Gray's half-volley header was one of the best goals I've seen - that
    was a really strange game, Everton had 80% of the play, but I remember
    Nev making about � dozen brilliant saves.

County's away end is not as bad as Forest's. You obviously have to be in the pen
away from the floodlights. Memories of a sunny afternoon winning the Championship
for Joe Fagan after a 0-0 draw come flooding back!!

    It might have been SURPRISE that a 'puny little club who can't attract
    gates of more than 30,000' could have travelling supporters
    out-shouting the Goodison faithful, but sarcasm...could a scouser be

    I didn't think Notts got really low crowds until they knocked down
    their own supporters end - those games in 1975 both had quite good
    attendances - wasn't it about 25,000 at Goodison and 35,000 at Meadow
    lane - I can't recall the score for some reason... :-)

 Everton supporters racist, No way never. It is purely coincidence that fruit 
and veg market sales soar on Merseyside in derby week. My advice to pundits out
there looking to make a quick buck, is invest in Fyffes shares now, Walters and
Barnes are on the block on the 31st August!!!!

    Stuart McCall signed for Glasgow Rangers for �1.2m last night.
    
    I wonder what Kendall's up to now ? - McCall was bought as a direct
    replacement for Peter Reid, but never had the same abilities as him -
    as a result Everton's centre midfield has been weak for the last couple
    of years. Having said that, he was the ONLY battling midfield player
    on the books and there doesn't seem to be anyone to replace him -
    Sheedy, Ebbrell, Ward and even McDonald could play centre midfield, but
    I doubt if any of them will even be as useful as McCall. - Get the
    cheque book out again Howard.

    branch) first meeting in two years last monday night.There was only

    I was listening to the second half commentary on radio merseyside
    and ,to be truthful we didn,t deserve to win this game.
    Apparently when utd went two -one up (Everton were winning one nil
    at one stage) Beardsley rounded the keeper and shot wide.
    
    Our defense is Rotten !!!!!!! Is Southall still acting the PR&&&
    or is it the defence ?? I hear and read that Keown and Watson are
    playing very well so it must be the full-backs.Hinchcliff and
    Atteveld ???????
    
    No points from any of the four away matchs ,hardly championship 
    stuff.To be honest I didn,t think during the close season that
    Everton would be challenging ,this year ,for the league but I
    started believing the media when the said we were contenders.
    Not this year anyway.
    
    As usual our home record isint bad ,we havent been beaten yet,but

    RE-1  I suppose your entitled to that ,after we gifted you with the
    three points.
    According to Howard Kendall it was the "worst display since he
    came back to Everton".
    
    Man City tonight at Main Rd ,and i cant see us doing much damage
    here.I read this morning that HK is bringing Pat (the dancer) nevin
    and Peter (evil knievel)Beagrie back into the squad,I dont think
    that they are the answer to our problems ???
    
    I also heard that HK is still rumoured to be chasing Andy Townsend.
    Now there,s a prospect !!!!!!!!!!!!! The fee is rumoured to be about
    3m.to wedge him from Chelsea. My advise to HK is PAY IT. 
    I still think our problems are in defence and we could do worse than
    make a bid for Wimbledon,s unsettled Terry Phelan.
    It,s just a coincidence  that these two play for ireland.I must admit
    that i hadn,t heard much of Phelan up until a few weeks ,But his debut
    in a green shirt was excellant ,he even got praise from Charlton ,who 
    doesnt lavish praise often.
    
    I toyed with the idea of going to the Coventry match next sat but

    	I dont return from Munich until the 18th of October , ill try and
    get up to a game shortly after that. Luton away is at the beginning of
    November , i'll definately be going to that as its my local team. BTW
    ive never been there as the away support ban has been on since ive been
    living in the area. I would have been going to the Watford match but im

    I Listened to this match on radio merseyside and i dont think i 
    want to go through that again ,NO THANKS ....
    
    The first half was dull with the exception of the last five minutes.
    Alan Hanson and Alan Green were commentating.There was about sixty
    off-side decisions shared by both teams.(even the ref started to ignore 
    them after a while).
    In the second half ,City started getting the upper hand but Everton 
    on the break had a Beardsley header cleared off the line.Some say it
    was over the line but some you win some you lose in those situations.
    (I can say that now after we eventually won).City still had the better
    moments although not much goal-mouth action.Wazza was replaced by zico
    MCDonald and apparently Everton started to get into the game.
    A mistake by Curle let Beardsley in to blast one into the roof of the
    net and it was one nil.The last five minutes i cant rememeber or rather
    dont want too ,suffice to say city hit every part of the woodwork but
    there was a spell on the goal.Even when city got a penalty in two
    minutes of extra time (extra time being just after one or two
    stoppages) they handed the novice Hughes the task ,and he promptly
    blasted it over the bar.Southall,s HooDoo worked and Everton stole
    the three points.

    I rang one of my relations ,season ticket holder at the Cov,for a match
    report.He travelled to Goodison to watch the match and said that there
    was little to excite about this encounter with the exception of Quasi.
    
    Apparantly Everton were lack-lustre and only for a stunning display
    from Beardsley that separated the sides.Coventry hit the post before 
    Everton scored a scrappy goal ,then Everton made it two with a
    brilliant goal ,again from beardsley and he completed his hatrick with
    a penalty.
    
    Still unbeaten at home,Beardsley scores 6 in the last 4 games and
    3 points in the bag.Now for UTD.

    It was the worst match I've seen all season (and that's coming from
    someone who's seen all Watford's home games!) Watford didn't help by
    playing with only one up front, but are Everton normally that bad?

    The Everton faithful !!! are renounded for their fickleness for
    attendances.Last year only about 20,000 went to Wembley for 
    the zds final .And usually mid-week cup games are poorly
    attended.
    Some cant believe that i travel from dublin to support them.
    
    Beardsly scored again ,that makes it seven out of the last 
    five matchs .He isint wasting any time paying back the bargain
    price of 1.m.
    
    Still no news on the tickets for sundays match.
    Would it be worth trying outside the ground ????????
    I know that united usually get 40,000+ at their home games
    and with it being liverpool as the oppisition ,i,m proably
    looking for a miracle.

    Was it really worse than our home games? (Charlton,Southend not
    included, only because we won). It seemed, listening to Mike Vince 
    on local radio,that for the last 15 mins of the first half we 
    should have scored as Luther had a couple of half chances, but Southall
    did well.  
 
    He also said that as Everton continued to press we looked quite
    capable of scoring on the break. Is that true, even when Butler came on 
    for Luther? David James apparently made a great save later in the 2nd
    half to deny Everton.
    
    With WFC's home record over the last few of seasons, Everton
    probably only need to turn up in the second leg. Still, it should
    make the game more interesting as long as we don't let in an early
    goal!

    Yup, even as bad as the Wolves match. Watford did look capable of
    scoring on the break, unfortunately, we didn't have any breaks for most
    of the second half.
    
    I haven't seen seen Watford with such a defensive line up, since the
    days of Mike Keen. Still, at least it's given us a small chance in the
    second leg.

    Satisfied with the point ,apparently a game of two halves 8-)8-)
    
    I saw the goals on the granada match .A bit of luck for both teams
    and a draw was proably a just result.Beardsley scores again to 
    make another installment on his bargain 1.m fee.Eight out of six
    games and only Ebbrell (man of the match on sat according to the
    "SUN") goal breaks the run of Beardsley scoring everton,s last 
    eight.

    I have just returned from a luncheon for a new courier company launch
    where Jack Charlton was guest speaker.
    I must say  he really is accessable and a pleasure to talk to.
    
    He told a funny story ,probably an old won by noters standards ,
    but got a great reception at the launch.
    
    Three soccer managers were killed in a car crash , Tommy Docherty
    Laurie mc Minamee and John Bond .
    On approaching the pearly gates ,st peter stopped them ,looked them 
    up and down and sent "the doc "  to a room with an old toothless hag
    and stinking furniture and said " for your sins on earth you will spend
    your eternity in this room ". Likewise with Mc minamee ..
    When it came to John Bond ,st peter led him to a beautiful four poster
    bedroom with Bo Derek ,Bondy was delighted until St peter said...

    Three weeks away from home and what a change...
    
    I got to Maine Road for the 1-0 win over City - it was the longest last
    minute I've ever had to live through - they hit the post, hit tha bar
    and missed a penalty... no sweat.
    
    
    Saturday's game.
    
    Everton   3-1   Tottenham   Att 29,505

    I tried out the new seats in the St End this time and what a hideous
    ordeal - the seats are unreserved so you have to get in early to get a
    good view - I had to miss a valuable hour's drinking. AND, everytime
    the ball got close to goal everyone stood up - I should have had a
    spring fitted to my arse...
    
    But off to the game, Everton played some brilliant football in the
    first half. Cottee hit the underside of the bar in the second minute
    and Everton missed three other reasonable chances all in the first 10
    minutes. Cottee scored his first in the 13th minute after Beardsley
    broke through, drew the keeper and squared the ball for Cottee to
    hammer it into the empty net. Tottenham equalised immediatly with their
    second attack of the game - a cross into the box looked harmless until
    Lineker dived to score a good equaliser. Everton didn't let the goal
    bother them and continued to press and took the lead again after Watson
    was fouled in the box by the clumsy Paul Stewart. Cottee scored from
    the spot. Cottee completed the scoring after Bobby the Pole broke
    through and set up Cottee for another easy goal. 
    
    The mini forward line of Cottee, Beardsley, Ward and Waryzcha were
    superb (for the first half anyway) - they scored three, but could quite
    easily have doubled that - a very encouraging performance, you could
    see the confidence building after a few good results - lets hope it
    continues....

    December - Everton vs Celtic, this is the day after Sharp plays for
    Oldham against Everton at Boundary Park....
    
    Kendall is rumoured to be on the verge of a BIG signing - Hagi has been
    mentioned again, but I also heard the Gary Stevens rumour.....
    
    Peter Beardsley is back in the England squad, the first Everton player

    that Everton fell asleep in the second half,especially bobby the pole.
    
    Main features were Keown was brill,Beardsley was excellant as was
    Ebbrell.Sheedy very good in patchs only to do some stupid things
    as well.

Great to see the blues doing (and playing) well again. Anyone going to Watford 
tonight? I know it's only the thingy cup but Blues Vs Watford games are usually 
very entertaining eg. 4:4 4:5 not to mention 2:0 at Wembley for the FA Cup.

    Martin, I can't make Watford tonight, but I know Nigel Fletcher will be
    back in time for the Luton game - I'm trying to save up the �13.50 to
    afford to go to that one - �13.50 what a bloody rip-off !!!!!!!

    Keown should be fit for tomorrow's game against his previous club, this
    means that Kendall has virtually a full squad to choose from. The only
    injuries now are Mark Ward - Hamstring and Ian Snodin - you name it,
    he's had it. Snodin continues to make 'slow, but steady progress'. No
    idea about if and when he'll be fully fit again.

    Keown was called up for the England squad, but was unfortunatly
    injured - it shouldn't be long before he gets called up again.

    What an unbelievable cr*p performance - only Southall managed to keep
    the score down to 2, I can't remember the last time Everton were that
    bad in a home game.
    
    Everton started badly as Villa dominated the first 10 minutes, but
    things seemed to be picking up as Beardsley and Waryzcha started to
    make gaps in the Villa defence. But then Regis scored against the run
    of play - and Everton just fell apart. Daley scored the second goal
    with a screamer mid-way through the second half.
    
    On the plus side, Matty Jacko had a good solid debut - he looks skilful
    and confident on the ball - a bit unusual for an Everton defender !! On
    the negative side, Ebbrell was eclipsed by Kevin Richardson and with
    him out of the way, Everton's attackers were totally out of it.
    Beardsley and Cottee both had a quiet game. Sheedy and Ratcliffe had
    stinkers - they must be on their way soon.
    
    Transfer news - the rumours about Hagi still persist, the latest is
    that Kendall is desperate to get him from Real Madrid, at least until
    the end of the season, whether it's on loan, or he has to break the
    bank to buy him.

    Wolves at home tomorrow - ex-Evertonian Andy Mutch misses the game, but

    Newell's departure leaves the forward line lacking in depth - Newell's
    been cr*p for the last eighteen months, but at least he was an
    alternative option to Cottee. I'd be very surprised to see Beagrie or
    Nevin leaving in the near future - other wise we might see Harper
    playing at centre forward.
    
    At least Kendall's cleared out most of Harvey's failures - McCall,
    Milligan, Newell etc etc. Jackson looks like he'll be a good buy, but
    he needs to buy a few more pretty quickly.

    the first was very 'Liverpool' - I thought Ward was tripped outside the

    the goalie definatley moved - but they usually do and don't get

    in that morning and leave that night etc also a shopping

    Well...we certainly don't eat them that's for sure. They're more
    inedible than the Parkhead one's !!
    
    As for the seats......I've been to Ibrox about a dozen times since the
    new stadium opened,and only once have I saw any seats damaged.
    Certainly,after the recent match there we left late so as to avoid the
    rush at the exits & I didn't notice ANY seats damaged in the bottom
    section of the Broomloan.
    I've laso saw us being gubbed there on more than one occassion & as I
    said...only once have I say any seats damaged.
    
    I've yet to see a pie stall set on fire though...........

    Kendall has already made some shrewd buys i.e. Beardsley ,Jackson
    and hopefully Super Mo .Also he is bringing out the best in players
    like Beagrie ,Ward ,Keown (who was getting better anyway).

    	If money was uppermost in McStay's mind, then why has he stuck with
    Celtic for so long. Although he will benefit out of any move, most of
    the Celtic faithfull believe that McStay's loyalty to the club will
    make  him stay at Parkhead. I only hope that the club can match any

    The 27 year-old midfielder is also due a testimonial next year,so if he
    is thinking about money...then staying at Parkhead will put around 500K

    The latest on the Sharp testimonial - it's cancelled !! It WILL NOT be
    played at Goodison, the Police have refused to let the game go ahead at
    Goodison under any circumstances....
    
    Newell - he started off well, but as he struggled to score goals, his
    general confidence went - his last 20 or so games were embaressing.

    Not a bad performance - Everton always looked as if they'd win quite
    easily - the approach play, especially in the first half, was superb
    with Beardsley dominating the midfield. Johnston had a quiet debut, he
    looked a bit slow and unfit, but hopefully he'll improve over the next
    few weeks.
    
    Cottee was outstanding, he scored the winner and hit the woodwork twice
    with two superb efforts - the only black mark was the header he managed
    to miss from one yard out... Ebbrell had a quiet game - he still needs
    someone to help him out in midfield, Keown and Matt Jackson were both
    solid in defence, Notts didn't create a single opportunity. Beagrie had
    a strange game - he has the ability to walk the ball through any
    defence, but he still has a problem knowing when to release the ball.
    
    All in all, a fairly entertaining game - Everton should have scored
    more but didn't, County looked better than I was expected but were
    obviously overawed at playing at a top-class stadium... :-)

    A good result .. Well there was only three points on offer and we got
    them all.The reports in the paper said it was easy for the blues but 
    they did miss some chances.Cottee still has me frustrated ,playing
    brill one week and pretty average the next.
    I still think we are in with a shout for the league and next week 
    against Leeds should be a cracker.(Are you going to that one Paul)
    This maybe blind optimisium (sp) but I havent seen any team that will

    Cottee did nothing on Saturday, other than score one, hit the woodwork
    twice and miss a sitter - he's that type of player. His confidence is
    high at the moment and provided he isn't made to run round like a idiot
    for 90 minutes, he'll continue to be in the right place at the right
    time.
    
    I probably won't make the Leeds game at Goodison a week on Wednesday,
    I'm stuck back in Basingstoke again now for a few weeks. I was very
    impressed with Leeds on Sunday, but hopefully, they'll let that win go
    to their heads and fall alseep for the next two games....

    Sorry I missed you on Saturday; due to transport difficulties, we
    travelled by train (Kirkdale), and arrived at the ground at 2.35, so
    went straught to our seats, rather than walk past to try and find the

    County didn't have a clue :-(, Everton did look good in patches, and
    the stadium is very attractive, but.....
    
    ....where was the atmosphere - 24,230 in the ground, and you could here
    virtually every word uttered by the players ! If the pro-Super-League
    lobby want to base their arguments around crowd numbers, then they
    should go along and experience this phenomenon - I've been to
    non-league games where the crowd has shown more passion.
    
    As to the Everton team :
    
    Southall - Was he playing ?
    Jackson - Nobody tested his defensive abilities.
    Hinchcliffe - Very accomplished in defence and going forward - the
    inch-perfect 60 yard pass to Cottee for the goal was world-class. Can
    Kendall seriously be thinking of paying the money-grabbers at Wimbledon
    800,000 PLUS Hinchcliffe for Phelan ?
    Watson & Keown - Solid enough, albeit against donkeys.
    Ebbrell - Dissappointing.
    Ward - very quiet game.
    Beardsley - Everywhere in the first half, and nowhere in the second -
    still of international class on this showing.
    Johnston - Badly lacking fitness (though not his old wrestling tricks)
    Cottee - Obviously out to prove his worth; the only thing he did wrong
    was to miss THAT header. Surely better than Kendall's supposed ideal of
    Kerry Dixon ?
    Beagrie - The man has amazing ball-control skills. What a shame he
    can't play as part of the team.
    
    I won't do a similar assessment of The 'Pies - it would distress me too
    much; only Cherry earned his keep.

    supporters were all in The Arkles - there was about 20 people
    altogether..... :-) But serioulsy, there wasn't a bad turn out by your
    lot - about 1000 and at least they made some noise...
    
    I agree about the atmosphere, the seats have really killed it nowadays,
    it was never that brilliant - the low roof on the St End muffles any

    Leeds away at the moment is probably going to be one of the toughest
    games of the season - but hopefully Leeds' be on such a high after last
    weeks performace that if Everton can hold them for the first 20 minutes
    they'll start to get frustrated.
    
    The defence is a lot more solid than it has been with Keown and Jackson
    playing well, but Everton will have to play well everywhere to get a
    result - if Beagrie, Beardsley and Bobby can put pressure on their
    cumbersome defenders I can see Everton scoring at least a couple of
    goals... so hopefully.......

    Well I was almost right with my prediction - Leeds expected an easy
    win, but Everton played well in all departments - except up front.
    Beardsley missed a couple of good chances to put the blues ahead. As
    the game went on, Leeds got more frustrated and Fairclough was sent off
    for punching Mark Ward - it's the second time he's been sent off
    against Everton. Hodge appeared as substitue - was on for seven
    minutes, got booked and was replaced.
    
    Unfortunatly, with just three minutes left, Southall missed a cross and
    the ball fell to Wallace to score :-(
    
    Mo Johnston has a hamstring strain and missed the game - Atteveld
    replaced him, no news about whether he'll be fit for Wednesday's game.
    
    Everton have showed they can be as good as the rest of the first
    division, but they must stop wasting chances - especially in away
    games.

    Keown was selected for the previous England squad - but was
    unfortunatly injured and had to withdraw - Ebbrell has been playing
    well for most of the season - PLUS he's been captain of the England U21
    team for the past x games - it's a natural progression for him - he'll
    be in the full squad fairly soon.

    I saw the extended highlights on the box over the weekend - what an
    excellant game, both teams played well and either team could have won.
    Oldham took the lead mid-way through the first half when the defence left
    Palmer free on the edge of the six yard box and he made no mistake.
    
    Sheedy equalised just before half-time when Jackson's shot was pushed
    out by the keeper, Beardsley was first to the ball and lifted it into
    the middle where Johnston nodded the ball across for Sheedy to head in.
    
    The first 20 minutes of the second half was all Oldham with Sharp and
    Marshall causing all kinds of problems - Milligan put them back in
    front with a volley from 25 yards - Nev looked a bit slow getting down
    to it. Nevin then scored Everton's second equaliser when he intercepted
    a poor backpass and knocked the ball past the keeper - Everton finished
    stronger and only some fine keeping prevented Watson and Beardsley from
    scoring the winner (typical !!).
    
    Sheedy looked something like his old self again - he was actually
    challenging for the ball and Johnston looked very dangerous linking
    with Beardsley up front.

    Got to agree with you there - I've never rated Venison - he seems to
    have spent the last couple of years on the injury list - I hope
    Kendall's not desperate enough to waste good money on him.
    
    There was another rumour in the paper here yesterday about Kendall
    being interested a signing Dion Dublin - some big 6ft+ centre forward
    who plays for Cambridge - I'll reserve judgement of that as well.

    I listened to then game on Radio Merseyside yesterday - it wasn't as
    close as the scoreline suggests. Everton are starting to look a lot
    more confident away from home and took the game to Southampton from the
    start - Ward scored his first goal since September with a screamer in
    the fifth minute.
    
    Everton continued to dominate with Ebbrell, Beardsley, Beagrie and
    Johnston running the show in attack and Keown keeping the �2m rated
    Shearer quiet at the back. Everton missed a numer of chances to
    extend the lead and just as I thought they'd let Southampton back in,
    Beagrie broke free on the right and set up Beardsley to make the game
    safe. Southampton scored a consolation with the last kick of the game.

    Everton   1-0  Southend   Att 22,000ish
    
    A narrow win over Southend, but who cares - a wins a win in the FA Cup.
    Beardsley scored the goal after 15 minutes and Johnston hit the bar
    soon after - reading the 'slightly biased' southern newspapers over the
    weekend, Southall was the only thing between Everton and a humiliating
    'Arsenal'. 
    
    Chelsea away in the fourth round - a bit tricky, but I can't see
    Everton losing to a team as bad as that.

    A good win on saturday. Southend put up stern resistence as expected by
    a team lying third in the second division.
    Beardsley showed his class and Super Mo hit the bar in the first half.
    Southall seems to be interested again and pulled off some great saves 
    in the second half to ensure that we were in the hat for the next 
    round .
    So its Chelsea in the next round at Stamford bridge.Sould be 
    a doddle for the blues ....8-)
    
    re Dion Dublin  ,he scored at the weekend and I believe Everton
    have a firm offer of �750,000 on the table for him.
    
    Paul I will definately be going to the QPR match on feb 8Th and
    will proably be going to the two matchs at Easter ,Coventry away
    and Man City at Goodison.

    Well its the Utd game this saturday. I think Everton will get a result
    no problem although i don't think it will be as great as QPR's margin
    of victory on New Years day.
    
    (How about a prediction from you Paul???)
    
    I'd really like to see Everton put the boot into Utd's title ambitions
    while they're down but we do have a tendency to open the floodgates at
    the other end when we play any top sides Arsenal Leeds(cup) games this
    season. However in the North West Everton's performances have been very
    encouraging beating City and giving Liverpool and Utd defences plenty of
    exercise.
    
    I wish Howard Kendall and Everton all the best for the new year and
    hope he collects some well deserved silverware in the not too distant
    future. I think he is on the right tracks and must be applauded for the
    way Everton are playing the game in the current first division climate.

    The Blues have quite a good record against the Mancs - so I'll be
    disappointed if they do lose on Saturday. I haven't given up all hope
    of going to the game yet - it'll be something special to stand in the
    Stretford End with that Stockman bloke and see the Mancs get stuffed.

    The Chelsea - Everton game has been selected as the live match by BBC.
    
    Chelsea are refusing to sell Everton any seats for the game - that's
    typical of Mr Bates and his small brain !! - Chelsea claim that they can't
    segregate the supporters properly if there are Evertonians in the
    stands - how many seats has Stamford Bridge got ? - it must be at least
    15,000 and they can't keep a couple of thousand safe from their animals
    - it says a lot for Chelsea. (That is NOT a dig at Chelsea supporters
    in here, it's a whinge at Ken Bates)

    supporters.Still you can still get them.I 've got seats in the East
    Stand for Saturdays game,as we always do.There's always plenty of away
    supporters in there despite not being given seats.Just go straight

    Which ones the West stand ? - is that the decrepid old shack underneath
    the TV cameras or the newish stand that almost bankrupted Chelsea in
    the mid 70s.
    
    I've been in the seats on both sides at Stamford Bridge, the decrepid
    old one was full of the usual Chelsea neanerthals - especially at the
    bottom where you could get straight in from the terraces. The other
    side was okay, but I was in the top level, the lowest level doesn't
    look to safe when you see it on TV.

    I wouldn't recommend the seats in the West Stand for away fans.  I was
    there twice last year and was surrounded by quite a few nutters both
    times.  You'll have to keep very very quiet if Everton score.  You do
    get a good view from the West Stand though.

     There have been many attacks on away supporters at Lime Street
     station over the years.
     Chelsea have had many problems over their time but that seems to
     have calmed down now, but Liverpool and Everton have had their share

    In today's market, yes he probably is - he destroyed Everton in the
    cup game last season, but as I've already said in the West Ham note,
    Kendall's already signed a number of similar type players.

    Yes - it won't do any harm - the team are playing well are creating so
    many chances, it's frustrating when the can't put them away. A tall
    striker may not make a difference, but at least he'll offer a second
    option to Kendall.
    
    I still think Everton should be looking to buy another midfield player -
    someone to help out Ebbrell and let Beardsley play further forward.

    After watching the Sheff Wed game over the hols , YES they should buy a
    tall striker. I dont think Johnston (sp) got his head to 1 ball during
    the whole game , the only time we got anything in the air was when
    Beagrie came on.
    
    The forward line played a whole lot better against Lfc when Beagrie was
    playing from the beginning , even better in the 2nd half after Wright
    had gone off.
    
    It still puzzles me why we bought Johnston. We have a small forward
    line and we put somebody in who is of the same stature. We should have
    gone for a bigger forward from the start. Somebody will also have to go
    if we buy anyone else - hopefully Cottee (he missed 3 open shots on
    goal against Sheff Wed - only 1 of them on target).
    
    In the 2 games over christmas I was very impressed with Beagrie , but
    it looks as though he is playing in his slippers - he is always falling
    over - any thoughts.

    What a depressing weekend, Everton have the better of the Mancs at Old
    Trafford, but as usual can't get the goals that the play deserves -
    Johnston has an 'obvious' penalty appeal turned down just three minutes
    from the end. AND then to make matters worse - Kendall goes and signs
    that donkey Ablett from the Red shower for �750,000 - I just hope

    Re Ablett ..My friend (who is an avid blues fan ) met Ablett and his 
    wife in spain last summer and had a few nights out with them .He said
    he was a nice enough fellow but a true RED_NOSE. (there,s a
    contradiction).What is the feeling on merseyside ?????????? I heard
    he was getting a lot of stick from the Kop.I hope Kendall knows 
    what he is doing ?????????? 
    This must signal the end of Ratcliff ,who gave great service to the

    Forgot to mention that I was at the Everton supporters club meeting
    Irish branch (and no, it wasn,t held in a phone-box) last night.
    15 people turned up ,which wasn,t bad as there was a lot of familiar 
    faces missing.Considering how we are doing this year this was a good
    turn out ,also there was very little notice given in the papers.
    
    So anyone reading this who secretly supports the Blues the Venue
    from now till the end of the Season is
    
    THE MAID BAR  beside the pro cathedral on marlborogh st on the 
    first monday of every month @ 8.00 pm.
    We usually have a bit of banter and finish up with a quiz.....

    transfer list - he's no great loss now - he's lost his pace and his
    confidence. Having said that, he'll probably go to Blackburn and finish

    I hope your boys have a really good time at the Bridge on sunday
    and have the stuffing knocked out of you. From what I saw yesterday
    , Forest threw away an easy victory. They should have won 3-0.
    
    Everton to sink in the mud of Stamford Bridge!!!! 2-0 at least to

    Everton   1-1    Nottm Forest  att 17,700ish 

    Everton's season so far was summed up nicely in one game - at times,
    Everton's mini forwards ripped Forest apart, but yet again they couldn't
    score enough goals. 

    Everton started off okay and Warzycha and Beardsley both went close
    before Forest took the lead in the 37th minute- Pearce tapped a
    free-kick to Gemmill and his shot took a wicked deflection off Keown's
    back to leave Southall stranded.

    Everton began the second half with Jackson off injured and Warzycha
    replaced by Beagrie - Harper moved from midfield to cover for Jackson
    and this effectively surrendered the midfield to Forest. Southall made
    an outstanding save from Gemmill to deny Forest a second before Everton
    moved both Keown and Watson up front for the last ten minutes - this
    was the signal for a siege on the Forest goal - Cottee and Johnston
    both missed clear chances and Chettle almost steered Beagrie's shot into
    his own goal. Watson finally equalised in the 85th minute after some
    brilliant work by Keown - he nutmegged a defender in the box, then beat
    the keeper to the ball to knock it into the middle for Watson to head
    home.
    
    It's obvious that Everton need a big forward - even if it's just to
    give them another option up front. The midfield were overrun yesterday
    - something that happens everytime Ebbrell has a quiet game. Ablett had
    a average debut - not bad for an average player........ While Keown was
    outstanding yet again - especially when compared to Des Walker who had
    one of the worst games I've seen him play. Jackson picked up a groin
    strain and looks doubtful for next week and Johnston appears to have
    broken his wrist and may be out for a while.

    I have to agree with everything you said Paul.
    Keown should have got man of the match although Gemmill was a close 
    second.It,s only a matter of time for him to get his England call up.
    You forgot to mention that Southall was back to his best with some 
    brilliant saves and that Cottee is as frustrating as ever,he missed
    a possible hat-trick.I was impressed yet again with Beardsley and
    Johnson covered a lot of ground in the second half especially.

    I think Kendall's getting a bit frustrated with him - when he first
    came in he was prepared to run at anyone, but this season he seems to
    prefer to knock the ball back inside to the non-existant midfield.
    
    It looks like he's dropped altogether for Sunday's game and Pat Nevin
    is recalled - should be interesting to see how 'Wee Pat' performs
    against his former club. Johnston's defo out - he hasn't broken his wrist,
    but he hasn't recovered from last weeks knock. Cottee replaces him.
    
    The latest news on the transfer front is........ 
    
    Tranmere have made an approach for both Sheedy and Ratcliffe - the fee
    will be next to nothing for both of them (Sheedy's on a free anyway),
    the main sticking points are - will they want to play in a team with
    Aldridge and also can Tranmere afford their wages ?

    What an unbelievable cr*p game - the first 45 minutes were terrible
    with both teams so scared of conceeding a goal that they forgot to
    attack. Everton played the little bit of football that was played -
    Nevin almost scored, but he was offside anyway and Cottee almost
    connected with Nevin cross - but was too short. Vinnie Jones controlled
    the midfield like the class player he is........
    
    The second half was slightly better football wise, Chelsea dominated
    the first 15 minutes and Dixon missed a good chance to put them ahead.
    Everton gradually clawed their way back into it, but it was Chelsea who
    took the lead when Clive Allen scored with his first kick of the ball
    after 71 minutes. Everton then decided they'd have to score to stay in
    the cup (!!), but Beagrie missed a good chance, then Cottee got through
    on goal with only the keeper to beat and managed to hit the keeper. The
    worst miss came when Beagrie was pulled down in the box by the keeper,
    Cottee took the penalty and and again managed to hit the keeper.Vinnie
    Jones controlled the midfield like the class player he is........
    
    Paul - this was all witnessed from the comfort of my living room,
    that's how I knew who the Chelsea players were....

    In all fareness I'd say the game was pretty much 50-50 with
    more Everton chances coming in the second half.
    
    Chelsea missed about 5 chances in the first half and Graham
    Le-saux took the piss down the left flank.
    
    Nevin couldn't get into the game and Cotee shouldn't have taken
    the penalty, it should have been Beardsly who would have scored.

    Another crap performance and it now more apparent then ever that we 
    need a tall stricker.Southall was kicking the ball to Mc Grath all
    afternoon with no challenge.Villa had a lot of chances but the
    blues could have sneaked it at the end.Big Ron was disgusted at
    the end because his team couldn,t score ,How do you think Kendall
    must have felt ??Both teams should have had a penalty ,villa,s
    been the most obvious...Cottee still frustrats but me being
    the eternal optimist saw some good things in this game..
    
    Keown was brilliant and he must play for England soon....
    Jackson had a good game and it was obvious that he was injured 
    in the second half.
    Southall back to his best .
    Watson had a good game too.
    APart from that Nevin had a good second half as did Beagrie (back
    to beating the same player three times etc)
    We need to get rid of Cottee and maybe Ward and get someone strong

    I just heard that rumour about Cottee too ,The rumoured figure was
    500,000 pounds .Some investment that ,after paying �2.2m just three
    years ago.
    Just goes to show even if he was Everton,s highest scorer over
    those years.Says alot about us since Kendall left.
    Although I do remember being delighted when we signed him and was

    Well I must have been to a worse game than this, but I'm f**ked if I
    can remember when - it was horrendous. Everton played like a team with
    no confidence and no incentive to do anything, QPR on the other hand
    played like a team with loads of confidence and no incentive to do
    anything.
    
    Everton started badly and got gradually worse, the midfield was
    'boosted' by the inclusion of Alan Harper alongside Ebbrell, Ebbrell
    tried hard, but he seems to be suffering from spending most of the
    season as Everton's entire midfield, Harper was just crap and was
    replaced by Waryzcha at half-time. The forwards made the midfield look
    good - Beagrie was frustrating, he had numerous attempts at beating the
    same player six times before eventually losing the ball. Ward spent the
    game hidden in a divot and Johnston wore Cottee's shirt with all the
    skill, class and confidence of the little man - he did sod all and even
    his close control was pathetic. Beardsley wore a blue shirt, but I
    can't remember if he touched the ball.
    
    Everton didn't create a single chance in the whole 90 minutes (QPR only
    had one that I could think of), had the game been on telly I'd have
    fallen asleep after 10 minutes, but unfortunatly I paid to go and with
    a wind-chill factor of about -20 degrees sleep, was impossible - but I
    did read the programme a couple of times AND I knew who was playing
    for the opposition this time.....

    It's obvious - Everton have taken over from Arsenal, (they get beaten
    too often), Liverpool (all those goals in European games) and Man Utd
    (challenging for the League) as the most tedious side to watch on a
    Sunday afternoon - ideal for sending millions to sleep. Chelsea also

    Everton have no game this week but Howard Kendall is rumoured
    to be over here in Ireland to watch the "B" match Ireland v Denmark
    tonight.He is supposed to be interested in a few of the Irish youths.
    Also proably to watch Gerry Peyton.

    dont have much cover at the back.

    There doesn't seem to be much cover anywhere now... I'm dubious about
    what Kendall's doing - the reserves are not particulary strong at the
    moment (they've been stuffed by Liverpool and Villa in recent weeks
    with NO players with first team experience playing). It looks like
    Harper will be expected to fill in for everyone.....
    
    By the way, the youth team have reached the quarter finals of the FA
    youth cup after winning 2-1 at Arsenal - they face Tottenham or Derby

    Everton played Derry City last night in the Brandywell and were held
    to a nil nil draw.Cottee missed a sitter as usual ,I believe he is now
    officialy on the transfer list.
    Both teams had their chances and only for the form of both keepers

    I Read in some of the tabloids that 
    
    1) Kendall has put in a �1m bid for Alan (smudger) Smith from Arsenal
       I doubt if we would get him that cheap...
    2) That Cottee is about to be swapped for Paul Stewart of Spurs at
    the end of the season. Not a bad swop IMO....

    Everton  1-1  Leeds   att Haven't got a clue - looked about 15,000
    
    Yet another 'staring appearance' on the box for Everton. The first half
    was 'sluggish' it even looked boring when viewed at double speed on the
    video. Leeds looked slightly sharper and Cantona missed a good chance
    when he outsprinted the defence, but put the ball wide - in the first
    half's other incident, Southall made a great save from McAllister.
    Everton played like a team with no confidence.
    
    The second half was a bit better - Leeds took the lead when Southall
    made a mess of a high ball into the box, Shutt crossed the ball from
    the edge of the six yard box and Keown turned it into his own net.
    Everton then came back into the game and Jackson scored his first
    senior goal when Keown flicked on a corner - Beardsley also put the
    ball in the net later on, but was just off-side. Everton finished the
    stronger team and looked the more likely winners.
    
    Hinchliffe came on as sub and partnered Ebbrell in midfield - he made
    quite a difference and will hpefully play there again until Kendall
    gets round to buying someone else.
    
    Rumours.... Seville in Spain are rumoured to be chasing Kendall...

    sorry, but there's no way I'd waste money going to Norwich to watch
    Everton at the moment. There's a bit in the Norwich note about getting
    to the ground - it's dead easy come out of the station and follow the
    river and you'll come to the ground. The game won't be all-ticket - so
    don't worry about getting tickets in advance. The away supporters bit
    used to be all caged in - with black tar on all the cages - you maybe
    better off going in the Riverside End (? - it's the opposite end
    anyway) - there's no fences there.
    
    Incidently, there's an Everon supporters club in London (ESCLA), they
    run cheap trips to most games. Their details are in a few programmes -
    if you can't find it, I've got the address somewhere - it might be
    worth giving them a bell and seeing if you can save a few bob on the
    trainfare.

    Aided by Ian Hawley's lethal navigating, I managed to make it through
    the rush hour traffic and into deepest darkest south London in good
    time for the game - unfortunately, it must rank as one of the worst
    games I've ever seen.
    
    Wimbledon started brightly and Nev made a couple of good saves from
    Clarke and Fashanu, but after that the game settled down and neither
    team even threatened to score. Warzycha had one effort in the first
    half, but that was Everton's attacking contribution. Things were so bad
    that towards the end, the Everton supporters were singing 'one shot at
    goal, there's only one shot at goal' - the loudest cheer of the night
    was when Hinchliffe blasted the ball from 25 yards - it ended up well
    wide, but at least it doubled Everton's shot tally....
    
    On the plus side the defence continues to look solid - Fashanu's a
    handful, but he was overshadowed by Clarke who always looked dangerous
    when he got the ball - Keown and Watson did well to restrict his
    shooting opportunities.
    
    On the minus side, the attack and midfield were dreadful, Wimbledon
    aren't the 'up and under' team they used to be and do actually try and
    play football, and they totally over-ran Everton in midfield. Up front
    Johnston had a 'quiet game' (quiet game = sh*t game) and Warzycha was
    virtually marked out of the game by man of the match Phelan.

    well, what a bundle of fun this was!
    perhaps one of the worst matches either of us had ever seen.
    Wimbledon started the better side, charging on to the attack and
    forcing 2 brilliant saves from Southall, it looked at that point like a
    good game might be forthcoming. It wasnt. The game stagnated in the
    first half, occasionally livening up with the odd run from either side
    (but mostly wimbledon i have to say).
    Andy Clarke went close with a hooked shot that whistled over the
    cross-bar, but the general format seemed to be...
    Player gets ball, passes ball, gives it to opposing defender, defender
    passes back to keeper, keeper hoofs the ball upfield, player gets ball,
    player gives ball to opposing def....etc,etc,etc.
    The second half was marginally better, with Everton actually coming
    forward in spells, but they seemed incapable of feeding the attackers
    who had few chances and they were either soft or wide.
    The midfield seemed non-existant and the wingers muted.
    only the defence seemed strong and it was this that kept them in the
    game. Wimbledon came charging with about 20 mins to go and almost
    scored a couple of times, but Southall and the defence remained strong.
    In the dying minutes Everton finally started to attack probably in
    response to chants from their fans... 
    "One shot at goal! weve only one shot at goal! one shot at goooaaal!
     weve only one shot at goal!"
    someone (Beagrie?) shot it just over the bar which caused a great roar
    and cries of "more!" from the Everton fans.
    but there was only 30 seconds to go and time ran out just as they
    seemed to get into their stride.
    
    As for the Everton side, well, as has been said the defence was solid,
    SOuthall pulled off a couple of stunning saves early on, Ebberell,
    Jackson, Keown and Ablett were tight and didnt let much through.
    Warzycha(sp) was active on the right wing as opposed to Hinchcliffe 
    who was outmatched by a brilliant Terry Phelan.
    up front Beardsley was a class apart as an extra midfielder but didnt
    get the kind of support to look threatening on goal.
    Mo Johnston had one good touch early on then disappeared from the game
    and was substituted by Peter Beagrie who looked busy but did little.
    Ward was absolutely terrible. The guy just CANNOT pass a ball.
    he had one good moment, a run past two players.
    All in all, Everton never really looked like scoring and Paul was 
    disappointed with their performance.
    Wimbledon were little better, Phelan and Clarke stood out from the rest
    and Fashanu fell down with elegance.
    apart from that nothing really to say.

    I did a really stupid thing on Saturday - I went to Goodison.
    
    Basically it was an awful game. I thought Lutons goal was pretty good ,
    the free kick beat Nev all ends up (OK Watson should have cleared).
    
    The Equaliser was well taken by MoJo.
    
    Apart from that it was rubbish. Beagrie was the best player for me ,
    but hes got nobody to aim at in the middle.

    I don't agree - the attraction of watching Everton at the moment is
    wondering how bad they're going to be. Norwich is bound to be another
    classic nil - nil or one goal thriller. There's another 'big' game
    tomorrow, away to Notts County - I'm gutted to miss that as I've
    already seen the first half of the teams' titanic struggle this season.
    Luckily, there's a few more biggies coming up - Southampton, Sheff Utd,
    Man City and Chelsea at home and Palace, Coventry and Tottenham away.
    
    I'll predict a storming 1-0 to someone tomorrow and a Wimbledon style

    Well we're still waiting for the Norwich report - what's happened to

    On the international front, Martin Keown played his second game for
    England last night and not only saved a certain goal after Seaman had
    made a mess, but actually scored England's second - a screamer from the
    edge of the box - it means he's scored more times for England than he
    has for Everton.....
    
    Other news: - Kendall was rumoured to be about to sign Simon Barker
    from QPR for �800,000, but that seems to have gone quiet. Atteveld is
    meant to be going to Bristol City for �250,000. Today is transfer
    deadline day, so if they don't happen today, they won't for a while.
    There's a few good players going cheap at Aldershot.....

    to Ward if memory serves me right.......obviously a radical change in

    I didn't think Keown was at fault for the first goal - Skurivy (sp ?)

    too many chances. Walker was marking him when he scored. England's

    for years before QPR signed him - he played well against Everton at
    Loftus Rd this season, but has been out of the first team for a while

    I,m still here but these Q-ends are killing me ,This is my first 
    chance to get into the notes.
    Great crack was had by all on our day trip to Norwich.
    We met up with ESCLA at liverpool st station and got our �12 tickets
    there was about 35 of them ,so we had a bit of crack on the journey
    which was about 1 and three quarters long.The six of us had a few 
    bevies in a pub right beside Carrow rd and we did a few bets i.e
    first scorer ,half time result ,full time result etc Needless
    to say noone won any of them...
    and so to the match .. I was stunned into silence when Norwich 
    scored after 2min 2 secs but Everton started to play some good football
    and it was on the eleventh min that Johnson equallised ,Beardsley
    (who was brilliant for the whole match )made it two -one and it stayed
    like that till half time.Norwich equalised just after the half time
    but Everton were looking lively and it wasn,t long before Johnson
    had us in front again.Bobby the pole ,in his only contribution to the 
    game, could have made it 4-2 but his effort hit the bar.Everton
    seemed to be content with the score at 3-2 and were hit with two 
    late goals.If there was anything riding on this match i,m sure Everton
    would have won it but there wasn,t much motivation and it showed..
    All the goals were very good ,yes all seven,wit hBeardsley,s being
    a classic.
    The team
    Southall   made one brilliant save but needs a bit of cover now and
    then
    Harper    rubbish ,not a patch on the player he once was.
    Abblett   definetly not a centre half 
    Keown     gets better every game ,but needs a partner in centre of
    defence
    Jackson   seemed out of this game ,but one to watch for the future
    Ward      busy but not the answer for Everton
    Atteveld  rubbish
    Ebbrell   busy but needs someone hard with him in midfield
    Beardsley Brilliant
    BOBBY the pole  rubbish  where are all the runs he used to make when he
    came first 
    Johnson   one of his better games
    Barlow (sub) he only had six or seven minutes but didn,t(couldn,t )do
    much.
    Kendall has a mountain to climb if he is going to win the league next
    year .We need height especially if Southall keeps punting the ball.
    
    The only saving grace for me from this match was the performances

    Well following Everton's 'stunning' 1-0 home defeat by Southampton
    comes another 'stunning' defeat - 2-0 away to Crystal Palace. All I
    know is, Beagrie had a 'goal' disallowed and while the Everton players
    were moaning to the ref, Palace went down the other end and scored.
    They then wrapped the game up with a dodgy penalty.
    
    Looks like Everton are finally out of the title hunt for another
    year........

    The FE's scored their largest win of the season against Everton on
    Saturday (we have scored more goals, but this is our first win by more
    than the odd goal!).
    
    Everton brought a very poor crowd with them, and started aggravting
    people early on, with Big Nev wasting time blatantly from about the 5th
    minute. Keown was roundly booed every time he touched the ball by the
    Palace fans, remembering his elbowing of Eric Young last
    season.
    
    As for the game, Everton's petit forward line looked very ineffective
    for most of the game, spending large amounts of time passing the ball
    but seldom going forward. Palace, meantime, played some of their best
    football for a while, with Thomas and young Simon Rodger being
    particularly strong in midfield. No goals in the first half, but Palace
    very much on top.
    
    Everton came out more after halftime, and had a goal disallowed for
    offside (Mr Coppell reckons at least three players were caught)
    Johnston got himself booked for arguing with the linesman. There were
    also bookings for Keown for an elbow on Bright and Collymore for a
    charge on someone. From Martyn's clearance of the free-kick, a long
    ball went down Everton's right whihc they gave up on a bit. Rodger beat
    the right back and Southall to the ball and flicked the ball across for
    Coleman to slot into an empty net.
    
    Shortly afterwards, Bright was through on goal in the box and was

    was OK. War-thingy took the throw, and rather than throw it back to
    Martyn, tried to throw it away from him for a goal kick. Martyn managed
    to trap it tho'. Rather childish in the first half at 0-0.

    I never thought i would want a season to end so quickly.I,d say
    most of the everton players are the same.
    I dont think that Kendall will jump ship just yet ,remember the last
    time he was under pressure and was nearly sacked We went on to win the
    league twice and runners up in the middle year also the F.A cup and
    the Cup Winners Cup .(I,m beginning to sound like Cunno now)
    Lets hope we buy a few tall players ,one upfront one for midfield and
    one at the back and then we could make a serious challenge for the

    At last Stuart Barlow gets his first full game for the blues and
    from the reports he didnt do too badly and was denied a penalty
    against man city on easter monday.This is currently Everton,s
    worst season in at least twelve years but us blues fans
    are eternal optimists and I for one am looking forward to next
    season.
    With Sheedy going to Newcastle and Peyton going to ??? this
    severs the Irish connection with the blues but Kendall is still
    interested in Martin Russell (portadown).I think he is from Finglas
    which is my birthplace .Apparantly he is setting the Irish League 
    alight.Will Everton miss out on this one ?????????

    Is Peyton supposed to be leaving ? - I think he's been loaned out just
    to give him some first team practice. (Obviously getting too much
    practise in the reserves....)
    
    Everton must have their weakest squad for years at the moment, there's
    only about 18 first team players including Ratcliffe, Snodin (who's on the
    verge of a comeback again) and Hinchliffe (now out for a while with a
    knee problem) - of the rest, only Barlow seems on the verge of a
    breakthrough into the first team. 
    
    Hopefully Kendall's purged out most of the cr*p that Harvey bought
    ('us Evertonians are enternal optimists') - but I wish he'd start

    I never went but I saw the goals on the box, the first was a cracker,
    Beardsley chased a lost cause into the box and as Monkou shielded the ball
    back to Beasant, Beardsley fouled him. As Beasant had the ball, the ref
    just played an advantage, unfortunatly for Monkou, he gave Beardsley a
    playful clip round the ear, so the ref sent Monkou off and awarded a
    penalty, which Beardsley himself converted. Beagrie added a second
    before Newton pulled one back for Chelsea.

    I listened to the match against spurs the other week and up pops
    Unsworth and scores the equaliser for Everton.Must admit i never
    heard of him.
    The Everton supporters club (Irish Branch) had their vote for
    player of the year and Beardsley shaded it by one vote from keown.
    A nice piece of crystal on its way to him.
    Does anyone know where Everton are playing on tour this year ??
    I also heard a rumour that Aldridge played for them in normans
    testimonial and he is travelling with them on their summer tour.

    He has one year left and according to the NOTW yesterday he is
    staying..
    Barry Horne has a reputation of being a "hard man",possibly what we
    need in midfield.I too will reserve my judgement..

    on the transfer left..dont know which seven.
    After a quick look at the fixtures it looks better than last year
    for me travelling from Ireland.

    I saw Barry Horne play for Southampton when I lived down there and he
    didn't do very well at Southampton. They bought him from Swindon for
    over 1 million and never seemed to fit in..
    I don't know wether you would consider him as a hard man in midfield
    or not on the evidence of what I saw, but the Mike Milligan comparison
    is probably only on looks and build..

    by tribunal. Kendall has said he wants to sign one more player before
    the start of the season - rumours that it was Lee Chapman have been
    denied by the club.

    Keown has had his operation and will miss the first couple of weeks of

    No, it's nearly as cheap to fly now. The only problem, which has just
    struck me, is that sans the North Bank it may be difficult for those
    without season tickets, bonds or registration scheme cards (i.e.
    Evertonians) to get in.

    Unsworth is a young forward, he played in a couple of games at the end
    of last season and scored at Tottenham - don't know much more about
    him. I must admit, I haven't got a season ticket - I work every fourth
    Saturday so I'll probably miss too many games to justify it.... Things
    are not looking good for the new season, other than Horne, there's no
    new signings so it'll probably be the same players as last year - with
    Keown out for a while yet, I can see them conceeding lots of goals,
    lets hope they can score a few more this time.

    Saw him play for Scotland against the U.S in Denver. He reminded me
    of Niall Quinn and IAn Ormonroyd you know a bit like Bambi can't
    stand up for long or play the ball on the ground.

    Nige, he's been mentioned a couple of times now  - Kendall has said he
    wants to sign a new forward because of Cottee's injury. - The fact that
    he tried to sign Dublin yesterday shows he's serious. Dahlin (The Swede
    with the suntan) was also mentioned yesterday, he plays for Borrussia
    Monchengladback and they're at Goodison on Saturday.

Firstly, Hello again (some of you may remember my brief appearence last year).

The game hardly merits a report, as it was so useless.  Att. about 9000 ish.
Only real incident was a well worked corner which lead to the goal.
Dahlin (who Kendall has been linked with) was quiet, but he is quick and not all 
that small but I don't really think he is the answer to our problems.
Played in our very smart new "pink" kit as a bit of a gimmick.

Transfer news....

I belive the papers have been full of speculation the Kendall is trying to buy
Mark Hughes form Man U. for about 2mill.(Don't know where the money is coming
from).  I don't really know wheather I should be pleased or angry!

From the report on the radio it sounded like we should have been well beaten. 
Nice to see Barlow scoring in the first team, although he scored loads in the pre-
season games last season, shame he carn't find the net in competitive matches.
Barry Horne played (he has been injured for a while), and I think Ian Snodin 
might of played as well, after picking up a back injury a few weeks ago.Hopefully 
he will be fit for the start of the season, especially now Keown is injured.

Anyone know any transfer news???

    available at a snip (�500K) from Rangers. That would raise the height
    of the forward line (if he stands on two legs and not four), though

    Ando - where 've you been hiding ?, yes it's true Everton have signed
    Paul Rideout for �500,000.... hmmm, I'll reserve judgement on that...
    
    I had the misfortune to go to Tranmere last Tuesday - Watson was
    missing so Ablett and Jackson played centre backs, the fact that
    Tranmere hit the woodwork three times says everything about the
    defence. Other than that, Everton controlled the game and Beagrie was
    outstanding - they probably created 6 or 7 good chances, but as usual
    couldn't convert them. Nevin and Ratcliffe both played probably their
    last games for Everton - Nevin's talking to Galastray (sp?) of Turkey
    and Ratcliffe's signed for Dundee on a free. The great dildo actually
    played quite well and put Tranmere ahead with a typical lucky goal.
    Barlow equalised with a good header from Ward's cross. Beardsley was
    rested. Kearton played in goal for the second half and looked good at
    saving shots, but looks a bit dodgy on crosses.
    
    Things are not looking good for the new season, the new signings, Horne
    and Rideout don't exactly inspire me with confidence. 
    
    Predictions for the coming months....
    
    Everton get off to a stinker and don't win a game until mid-November,
    by which time they're four points behind Crystal Palace at the bottom
    of the table with just 12 goals scored and 45 conceeded- crowds are
    down to 8,000. Kendall resigns in early December and Andy Gray takes
    over as the new manager - he buys Steve Bull and Andy Townsend and 
    suddenly Everton start scoring, they go on to finish eighth and win the

    of next season was just about spot-on.You forgot to mention being 
    beaten in the semi-final of the zdzzzzzzzzz cup by blackburn after 
    three replays and losing in the semi-finals of the rumblelows
    to cystal palace ,after knocking out liverpool ,man utd and leeds in
    earlier rounds .Still I will risk a tenner with the bookies at massive
    odds i.e �5 to win the league @ 40/1 or there abouts and �5 to win the 
    f.a. cup (dont know the odds yet).
    
    Lets at least start the league with a win today ,no more predictions
    do you remember mine last year .

  A strange sort of game, with as usual Everton dominating long periods of play 
and having very little to show for it.  The first half was quiet with Weds. having
one clear cut chance when Hinchcliffe cleared off the line.  Their goal was a 
gift from Nev, as he came out for a corner it when striaght between his hands and
dropped at the Wednesday player's feet.  Everton pressed a bit and about a minute
before half time a poor defensive header dropped to Horne on the edge of the
area and he scored with a rising shot.  Up till then Horne had been very quiet 
but in the second half he came more into the game until he picked up a knock.
Our other new player, Rideout really was useless, his first touch was very poor
and the few chances that cames to him he made it very easy for the keeper.  I
suppose you could put it down to being in a team of complete strangers, but who
knows.  Anyway looking on the bright side, he can only get better.
  Ebbrell had a really good game, as did Jackson, Hinchcliffe and Begrie plus Bob 
when he came on as sub.  Beardsley was quiet and guilty of missing a great chance,
when he tried to walk it into the net instead of shooting.
  Not a wonderful performance which inspires me for the up comming season, and
I am still to see the wisdom of the summer signings.  What we really need is a 
goal scorer, not someone like Rideout.  We didn't have a problem creating chances
on the whole last season, it was just nobody could put them away.

    What a brilliant result, I listened to the whole game on Radio City and
    Everton were well worth the win. Hopefully this win will give them the
    confidence to carry on playing good football. Southall and the defence
    were outstanding, especially Ablett, Watson and Harper. The Mancs had a
    lot of the ball in the first half, but never sounded like they'd score.
    
    Beardsley put Everton ahead on the stroke of half-time, when Waryzcha
    found him free in the Man Utd half. In the second half, the Mancs tried
    to get back into it, but Everton broke again in the 80th minute and
    Waryzcha brilliantly turned the defence inside out before hammering in
    the second. The last 10 minutes were superb, Everton played keep ball
    and took the p*ss out of last season's title favourites - Johnstone
    game on as sub and scored the third in the last minute after a blunder
    by Schmeichel.
    
    It's too early to say whether the result signals a change in Everton's
    fortunes, or if their just the first of many teams to have an easy
    victory at Old Trafford this season.

    was typical end of season stuff.Everton were coasting but lost the
    game 4-3 in the end .There was nothing in it and it showed ...
    It should be different tomorrow and ,if Beardsley scores another
    goal like he did that day (Goal of the season IMHO) then it should 
    be a great match.

    Pat ,the dancer ,Nevin has finally left Goodison to go to near
    neighbours Tranmere ,for �250,000. Cheap at double the price.
    He played around 100 league games for the blues but due to injury
    and bad form he never really got a regular place in the side.
    A great player on his day and a nice fellow off the pitch (met him
    last year in dublin and he enquiring about the Dublin nightlife,
    i sent him to bad bobs and told him to stear clear of Rumours,
    remember what happened to chris morris)
    
    
    He will be missed but it,s better for him to be playing regularly 
    especially now that he has got his place back with Scotland.
    I wonder who will replace him as the players rep at Goodison ????

  Not a bad result I suppose, I would have settled for a point before the game
but after listening to the game on the radio and reading the newspapers we should 
have won this one.  By all accounts Beardsley was brilliant, along with Bob, who 
seems to be a different player this season.
  In the first half we had some good chances and seemed on top.  This continued 
in the second half and from a Hincliffe free kick Beardsley scored.  Even when 
Norwich equallised we didn't seem in danger of losing.  I suppose the main thing
at the moment is to be gaining points, which is something we don't normally do at
the start of the season.
   

   Aston Villa on Tuesday, and the way they are playing at the moment I will be 
very disapointed if we don't get three points.  I don't know if any of you have 
seen the goals from mid week, Bob's goal is a classic, and Mo's is so funny....


   Also I would just like to say I was also sad see Pat go, in my view he was 
never given a really chance in the first team under Kendall.  I'm sure he will do 
well for Tranmere.

What a load of rubbish, Everton the team only last weekend described as a 
passing team could not string two passes together and I mean two. Aston Villa
it has to be said were no better. 
Considering there must have been at least 25 million pounds of so called talent
on view the whole night was a great letdown rescued for two minutes when Everton
strung 4 passes together to score a great goal unworthy of the occasion.
I'll describe the goal because absolutely nothing happened for the previous 88 
minutes. Everton under pressure for the previous 5 minutes broke from defence
with a cavalier charge by Ablett who raced from his box to the halfway line and
gave the ball to beardsley, while Ablett went for the return beardsley carried 
the ball 20 yards and just when everyone thought he would give it back to ablett
he played the ball to Johnston who had stole half a yard from his marker and
from just outside the box sidefooted a low well placed shot of considerable 
power (or so it seemed from the paddock) past Spink. The ground erupted all 
22 thousand (oh yes EFC!! more like 30) and we all went home alot happier
especially with Ipswich scoring a similar late goal.

Can I also say that it was an absolute pleasure being at a superb ground like
Goodison Park being surrounded by moronic EVERTON supporters shouting "break
his legs" and "kill that Nig***" at opposing players as well shouting obscene
terms of endearment at their own players. A truely forgettable evening made
worse by the qualities of Evertonions some of us would like to be changed.
It doesn't happen at other grounds the times I've been to City and United and
other North West teams and I think the club should take some positive steps to 
eradicate it or do they want to??

	It wasn't a bad game, but Everton weren't at their best and Villa had 
some good chances in the first half.  Early in the second half Kendall replaced
Rideout with Begrie and we played far better.  The defence played very well,
especially Hinchliffe who was outstanding, in defence and attack.  The game
looked to be heading for a draw until a *brilliant* goal on the break away from
Johnson who played well all night.  When you start to win games you shouldn't, 
especially against half decent oposition then things look hopeful for a better 
season than last.  But at the end when the Street was singing (yes actually a song 
from the Street end!!!!) "were're goin' win tyhe league" I have to disagree, but
we live in hope.....

Your comments about racist abuse are very worrying. Everton have something of a
reputation for this sort of stuff. 
However, I read a report on Vogon news, about a week ago, which claimed that 
Kendall was looking at a couple of young South African players. Does anyone know
if this has got any further?
Have Everton ever had a black player in the first team? I can't think of one off 
hand, but then I don't really follow them. (Go Doncaster!:-))
Leeds had a similar problem with their fans, and they did something about it.
The Everton management, on the other hand, don't appear to care. Perhaps the FA
should take the initiative, and force Everton, and any other teams with these 
kind of problems, to address the situation. 
You are not allowed to take alcohol into grounds, but attitudes like these are
far more likely to turn families away, in my opinion.

Yes Simon's comments dismayed me as well.  In answer to your comments, firstly 
Everton have had a black player in the 70s, his name escapes me at the moment
although I think his first name might have been Rodger.  Also Everton did attempt
to do something about the problem about two years ago, when the chanting got
quiet loud.  I don't know what the scheme actually involved but i was ran through
the papers and I think David Rocastle got invloved.  After this, the introduction 
cameras, and the threat to throw people out who were seen or heard to be chanting 
this cr*p the problem seemed on the face of it to go away (I mean I have been to 
every home game for quiet a few seasons and I couldn't hear anything). But I'm 
afraid you carn't change attitudes, it just makes me sad that there are such small 
minded people around who carn't see anything wrong with their racist attitudes. 


Interesting what you say about young Soth Africans, also we did have a Nigerian on
trial at the end of last season he played in a few friendlies, and what I saw of 
him he looked very good.  I would just like to say I think that over recent years
something did go on about signing (or the lack of) black players at the club.
Not wishing to say anything to detrimental about Philip Cater(Ex chairman) but I
think we all know his politics!!!!!

       Everton did have a bad reputation a few years back and they
    installed camera,s in the ground with notes in the match programme
    etc saying this abuse would not be tolerated and anyone caught would
    be ejected from the ground and charged with racial abuse etc ..
    I thought it had gone away (well almost away ,you,ll always get the 
    few).It is an embarresment for the club and most of the fans ,including
    me .
    The coloured player that played for Everton was Cliff Marshall (i
    think) but he only played 11/12 full games for the blues in the 70,s
    (again  i think)I,m sure Paul will correct me when he comes back .
    
    This must have a detrimental effect when Kendall is chasing a non-white
    i.e Who wants to risk being the next non-white to play for Everton and
    who ever it will be will be under a lot of extra pressure to perform.
    Who knows maybe thats why Mark "everton" Walters never signed for us.
    Everton are not the only club that non-white players get slagged off
    I remember John Barnes running the Gauntlet when he joined Liverpool
    first .
    Anyway it saddens me ,the amount of abuse the Arsenal players got

	Yes Cliff Marshall, rings a bell, although it was a few years before my
time I suppose.
	About Carter's politics, it is rumoured that he has quite extreme right
wing views, I don't know weather this story was put about by newspapers in a
attempt to explain the lack of black players at Everton.  It carn't be Kendall
as he did have black players at City and he has tried to buy black players.

	Also it is expected that Everton will today complete the signing of the
Yugoslav international Pedrag "Strange second name that is impossible to say, 
neaver mind spell", otherwise known as Prekie.  I have no idea of his age, all
I know is that he plays on the left of midfield, has been playing in America,
speaks perfect English, and is costing vertually nothing as the American league
has recently folded.  He has played on the pre-season tour and been training with
the first team this week while the club were waiting for clearance to play him.

    Rotheram are now in Division 2 (that's Division 3 in old money) and not
    doing to badly either. They've currently played 2, won 1 and drawn 1 as
    at August 24th, but they may have played again this week.
    
    Games against this sort of opposition make me nervous. Still we are due
    a good cup run and as long as we can at least draw away, then we should
    be O.K. in the return leg at Goodison.

    Everton squandered this match....
    We were well in control and it seemed only a matter of how many goals
    we would win by ,despite a great performance from the spurs keeper
    and a not-so-great performance from the Everton forwards.
    (not so super) Mo missed a couple of one-on-one,s with only the keeper
    to beat.(where are all the goals he used to score with celtic and
    rangers ???)
    Everton ran spurs ragged in the first half but everton only had the 
    one goal lead which proved not enough  in the final 10 minutes.
    Beardsley played brilliantly and was rewarded with a individual goal
    running from his own half(well nearly) and beating the keeper with
    a dainty little chip.Johnson missed a few chances and when Barlow
    came on as sub he ,altough played very well ,missed a few as well.
    Spurs battled hard to come back into the game ,especially Durie and
    sheringham (both who looked dangerous every time they got the ball)
    and got two late goals (the winner was in the 92 min) to stop 
    Everton,s unbeaten run.
    With out doubt it was Everton,s suicidle tendensies(remeber last year )
    that lost this and not spurs winning it.
    
    I was disgusted and furious at the way we threw this away and hope this
    isint a sign of things to come...

    I heard the report of the Wimbledon game on BBC world service, it
    sounded awful,  I saw the Tottenham game liveish on Turkish telly. It
    was just like last season, Everton well on top, making chances, but not
    taking any, then out of nothing, Tottenham equalise, it gives them new
    heart and they go on to score a very very late winner.
    
    Re a few back You're right Liam, Cliff Marshall was the black player
    that played for Everton during the mid 70s, I actually saw him playing
    in about 1975, he probably only played about 5 or 6 first team games
    before he was sold to Southport.

    Does anyone have any news on the current Everton injury list ?
    
    So far as I know Matthew Jackson, Martin Keown and Tony Cottee are all
    out injured. Are any/all of them likely to be back for the Man U game
    at Goodison, or at least in the near future.

    current injuries are Keown, Cottee, Snodin - all still out for a while
    yet (I think), short term injuries are Ebbrell (he'll probably miss
    tomorrow's game) and Preki. I don't think Jackson's injured, he was
    dropped a couple of weeks ago.

    I'm amazed that Matthew Jackson has been dropped, the last I heard
    (and saw, although that was a little while ago) was that he was playing
    really well, even rivaling Rob Jones for the England right back spot.
    Still, having said that I've been hearing good reports about
    Hinchcliffe and Harper at the back (pity they couldn't keep Tottenham out
    last week though), so maybe Jackson can't win his place back.
    
    I know Martin Keown picked up an injury during the European
    Championships and had to have an operation (I think ?). Is it a serious
    injury (fracture etc) ? We could really do with him back at the moment.
    
    Good luck to the BLUES tomorrow. We could notch our first double of the
    season ( and we'll only have played 7 games !).

    Jackson played for (and captained) and got sent off for the England
    U-21s at the end of last season. He's like quite a few players at
    Goodison at the moment, very short of confidence. Kendall brought
    Harper and Hinchliffe in at Old Trafford and they've both played well
    since then. I imagine that Ward and Waryzcha could be 'rested' over the
    next couple of weeks.
    
    I dunno about Keown, I'll see what I can find out.

    Everton play Blackburn tonight , at Blackburn.
    
    First match King Kenny has played against Everton since the epic 4-4
    cup match.
    
    On present form we'll do well to score.
    
    Seems like a carbon copy of last season , a couple of good results at
    the start (The Arse at home) then lots of reports about how well we are
    playing , but without getting the ball in the net. Rideout might be back
    tonight.
    
    
    To celebrate 100 years at Goodison , there is a commemorative book
    called something like "100 years at Goodison". Good stuff with match
    reports etc from the last century.

    Saturday's result was very very depressing, the Mancs deserved to win.
    There were rumours in the papers that Beagrie may be on his way to West

    Saturdays result was not as depressing as the week before , listened on
    the radio and at 1/2 they were saying that Spurs where poor and that we
    should be 2 or 3 up. Come the second half and Spurs get back into it ,
    I could see it coming , sit back and try to hold on. Pathetic. Did you
    see the miss by Johnston , right through with only the keeper to beat ,
    he didnt even hit the target (does he ever). The keeper had a good game
    , but with the chances we made , Spurs shouldnt have been in it.
    
    We have got to get a striker who can score goals.
    
    I will be up in a week or so , perhaps we can meet for a beer or 2.

    the Tottenham game was three points thrown away, but the Manc game
    sounded as if Everton were well beaten, they had them on the ropes for
    15 minutes after halftime, but after the usual three or four misses
    the heads dropped.
    
    I don't like slagging players off, but Johnston's been a huge
    disappointment - his close control is poor and his confidence is low.
    I'd like to see how Cottee and Rideout link up together. There's
    someone called (I think) Michael MacDonald - ex-Newcastle on trial from
    Dundee at the moment - he's probably another 3" midget. 
    
    A beer sounds like a good idea - you'll be pleased to know they're
    still digging up Ormskirk.......

    Moran et al are tailor made for Everton's nippy forwards and I reckon
    Everton's defence will be too good for Shearer and Newall. Dropsy Mimms
    is always worth a clanger.
    
    I think the premier league is so up and down and the moment will see
    another strange result tonight (an Everton win). What I'm trying to say
    is that its sooo EVEN.
    
    I'll be in the vicinity but decided on the top of the table clash
    Bolton v West Brom as I'm trying to visit all the grounds in the North
    West. Watty has expressed an interest in doing this also but he was put
    off by the Hot Dogs at Tranmere Rovers. He claims he is working tonight
    but I know that Southport are at Home to Gainsborough Trinity and he's 
    going to start off a Southport Note in the morning.

    Now I've actually got a radio over here I was able to listen to the
    commentary on Radio 5, and what a game it turned out to be.
    It sounded quite close but very exciting with play switching from end
    to end. Both teams seemed to play well but at last Everton have been
    able to turn a good performance into a winning result, something I
    would not have put money on before the game.
    
    Things didn't start to well though with Mark Ward being carried off in
    the 10th minute, with what is now known to be a broken leg/ankle, and
    Shearer scoring from a penalty 2 minutes later to put Blackburn 1 up.
    However, Everton kept playing good passing football and were rewarded
    10 minutes later when Tony Cottee, playing his first game after
    injury, equalised. Everton then took the lead just before half time
    when John Ebbrell scored his first goal of the season from close range.
    
    With Everton 2-1 up at half time things looked pretty good. Blackburn
    pressed hard in the second half but Everton always seemed able to catch
    them on the break. Then with about 12 minutes to go Blackburn equalised
    with Shearers second goal of the night and I could see the Tottenham
    game happening all over again. Still how wrong can you be, Everton, far
    from settling for a draw, continued to go forward and Cottee scored his
    secon of the night 7 minutes before time. That 7 minutes seemed to take
    an eternity but Everton hung on and in the end, according to Alan
    Hanson were good value for their win.
    
    Well if this doesn't give 'the lads' some confidence then nothing will,
    and let's hope that Tony Cottee can continue this sort of form.
    
    Roll on the next game. (BTW who is the next game against ?).

    Ward's broken his leg so he'll be out for a while - Warzycha replaced
    him and played very well (again), Jackson replaced Rideout at half-time
    who suffered a reoccurance of his shoulder injury. No place in the team
    or on the bench for Johnston or Beagrie.
    
    Saturday's game is Crystal Palace at home.

    I couldn't believe it when I heard the final score. Although the
    reception of Radio 5 was VERY faint and crackly I could just make out
    that Everton were overrun in midfield and eventually lost 2 - 0.
    
    So much for having boosted our confidence with mid-week win over
    Blackburn. Not another season of inconsistency .. Please !.

    Beardsley did his hamstring and will be out for ?? weeks.
    
    Wazza was injured against Blackburn and did not play.
    
    Ward broke ?? (part of his leg) and will be out for ?? weeks.
    
    God knows who was playing on sat , but Wazza has been a star of late
    and was badly missed. I think Rideout was playing , but I think he did
    his shoulder again.
    
    I cant see any improvement until some of the injured players are back.

    Beaten by the "thugs " is even worse than been beaten by the mancs .
    Everton as usual created enough chances to at least draw with palace
    but as usual (well the last few season,s anyway )squandered them.
    From the match reports palace could have got another and it was a 
    suprisingly  "clean " game . The injuries are mounting up (i sound
    like a liverpool fan now).The difference is we dont have a big squad
    to cover for these injuries.What will life be like with the next few
    matchs with Beardsley.Johnson has been a big dissappointment imho also
    Rideout.And to think we balked when Kendall nearly signed Mick Harford
    who is now banging in the goals.
    It certainly does look like mid-table mediocrity this season ,hopefully
    we will get a good run in the cup and maybe do a bit of damage to the
    "contenders" for the premier league i.e. beating Blackburn and man u 
    in their own back yard.
    
    Rotherham in the coca cola cup either last night ,tonight or tomorrow

    We play rotherham tonight in rotherham and looking at last nights
    results we had better beware...A lot of giant-killing results
    (well almost )
    Kendall is giving this Preki player a debut tonight with Stuart
    Barlow in the squad.Maybe this game is what Barlow needs to bang
    in a few and build up his confidence.
    hopefully this match will be on Linakers football night or what 
    ever it,s called on radio 5.

    What right have Everton to call Palace thugs? The two clubs have had a
    few wild games, but by far the worst incident was instigated by Keown
    when he elbowed and then stamped on Young putting him out for nearly 4
    months (fortunately over the summer).
    
    Equally, Palace have generally been tough but fair, and have won fair
    play awards for various months. 
    
    As for Saturday - try reading the Independant write up - you were
    played off the park by a superior team, who will now rise up the League
    and leave you in our wake.

    the BIG games) - full report/ post-mortem tomorrow. Dunno what happened
    on Saturday, radio city said Everton were unbelievably bad, but that
    Armstrong sounds like a good player - Everton had first option on him
    when he was at Wrexham, but turned him down. I wonder why.... (calling
    Mr Panes)
    
    Bobby the Pole is away on international duty with Poland so missed
    Saturday's game and tonights - Preki sounded impressive in the
    pre-seasons, but we'll have to see what he's like on a cold and windy
    night at Millmoor. Snodin played for the reserves last week, so he

    I was at the same match and saw nothing of what you saw. Ian Wright and
    Keown had a number of tussles which looked 50-50, while Keown ended up
    going off with a broken nose after being caught (accidentally) when
    jumping for the ball with Thomas - the video supports this theory.
    Thomas did get involved in an early tangle with someone (McCall I think
    - a real shrinking violet!) 
    
    I musy be honest and say that Everton have slipped hugely in my esteem
    after seeing them in the past two seasons. When I was at college in
    'pool I used to always go to Goodison in preference to Anfiedl 'cos I
    preferred their style and the atmosphere. The past two league games at
    Selhurst have showed them to be a very niggly team, and Southall to be
    a total pain in the butt. 
    
    Sorry - but that's my view. The FE's had (from memory) 3 players sent
    off last season - Martyn (professional foul), Young (twice - verbals
    and a stupid elbow) and Thorn at Goodison for what most non-Evertonians
    reckon was a total con by Ward.

    Hmmmm - terrible result, but I suppose these games don't seem that bad
    when you're actually there. It was Rotherham's cup final, I haven't
    seen a team as wound up as them for a long time. Jackson was an early
    casualty when a defender went for a ball and nearly cut Jackson in half
    - he's got ligament trouble and will be out for at least a month.
    
    Everton started brightly, but always looked uncomfortable against
    Rotherham's 'Wimbledon-style' long ball game - Harper almost gifted
    them an early lead, but Southall came to his rescue. Rotherham took the
    lead in their second real attack in the eighteenth minute. This gave
    them the confidence to launch into all-out attacking and Everton
    struggled to keep the ball for more than about 20 seconds - Rotherham
    created a good four or five chances, but due to desperate defending by
    Hinchliffe and some superb saves from Southall they couldn't add to the
    score. At the other end, Cottee missed a good chance when he headed
    wide from inside the box.
    
    The second half was a bit better for Everton - I had the impression
    they were happy to let it stay at 1-0, rather than launch everyone into
    attack and risk going further behind. Rotherham still managed to hit
    the bar.
    
    Disappointing result, but a relief to get away with only a 1-0 defeat.
    Preki had a fairly average debut, he looks tricky going forward, but
    won't do much defensively. Southall was magnificent. Watson, Ablett,
    Horne and Ebrell struggled against the long-ball 200 mph game and
    Cottee, Barlow and Beagrie didn't seem to realise they were only
    playing against a second division defence and always wanted to take the
    easy way out.

I thought Preki had a good solid debut. Kendall had obviously told the players
to give him as much as the ball as possible and he got it.
Everton started well went a goal down in the Rotheram's first created attack
a boot up the channel for cunningham to scrap for and then promptly settled
for the 1-0 defeat. Not pretty to watch but what achieved what Leeds should have
done a week earlier in Germany.

Good points

Ablett ... Mr consistent, he coped well with the battering rams of rotheram
Hinchcliffe.. very confident, excellent on the ball
Southall... what can I say
Preki...very skilful

Bad points

Beagrie..what a frustrating player for players and supporters alike

The player who most impressed me was Shaun Goater from Rotheram. He caused
our defence problems all night with pacey bursts and good control. I think he's
worth a gamble for someone (not us of course because he' black and we know what 
that means to your chances of a career at Goodison).
I get the impression he'll get crocked in the first five minutes at
Goodison for the Everton cause. 

The away chants of the crowd hadn't changed since the Villa game, alot quieter
but included the word "bananas."

    I expected something like this before the game (we only beat lufc 
    3 times in forty matchs at elland rd).
    Everton had chances but as usual missed them but apparently leeds
    could have had a hatful only for the brilliance on southall.
    If Kendall hadn,t come back when he did i dont think the big Nev
    would still be there.
    We have a lot of injuries at the moment(sound like someone from 
    across stanley park) and we just dont have the strength in the 
    squad.
    
    We are playing "the red shite" (just got a few copies of" when skies
    are gray " in brucies testimonial next sat week at anfield.It will be
    like a reserves fixture..

    Doom gloom and despondency - the Liverpool Daily post had a really
    damming report about Everton this season - beside the wins at Man Utd
    and Blackburn, they've been very ordinary this so far (surprise
    surprise !).
    
    Beardsley and Keown, the best two players last season are out injured,
    now Warzycha the only one who's looked any good this year is out for a
    while. The buys have been very average - Horne, Rideout and Preki are
    all 'bargain basement buys' - Johnston was a poor signing and should be
    sold as soon as possible, Rangers must be laughing at Everton having
    dumped Rideout and Johnston and stolen Steven, Stevens and McCall. If
    Everton want to remain (or even become) a 'big five club', they've got
    to spend money - dead simple, debts or no debts.

    Not a bad performance, Everton looked a bit dodgy for the first 25
    minutes, but once Rideout had scored his first, Everton were fully in
    control. Cottee added the second from the penalty spot after about 30
    minutes when Rideout broke through, knocked the ball over the keeper
    and got pulled down - Cottee scored, but the ref gave a penalty and
    sent the keeper off.
    
    The second half was like a practice game - Ridout scored the third
    after a superb run by Bob the Pole - Rideout could have got a couple
    more, he hit the post and also chipped the keeper from about 45 yards
    but just cleared the bar - Johnston came on with about 10 minutes to go
    and did he's usual - nothing. The stand-in keeper pulled off a
    brilliant save from a Beagrie screamer. 
    
    All the youngsters looked okay, especially Kenny who had a solid debut.

    Anyway, Keown and Snodin both played the full 90 minutes - Beardsley
    didn't, I dunno what's up with him at the moment. Everton took the lead
    through Beagrie after a clever flick from Cottee and then should have
    scored a second but as usual didn't - Liverpool scored a lucky
    equaliser when Burrow's shot hit the bar and bounced in off the diving
    Kearton. Liverpool then took the lead after Rosenthal was given yards

    Anyway, I don't think Everton will be publishing the Pontins League
    Division 1 table too many times this season - Everton reserves 
    got relegated last season, but are currently running away with
    Division 2. I'll see if they publish the other table in the footy echo

    Beardsley returns tomorrow at home to Coventry, Keown and Snodin have
    both played a couple of times for the reserves and can't be far off the

    Not a bad game, Beardsley and Keown returned and gave Everton a lift
    from the start. The first half was encouraging with Everton having
    almost totally pressure but not really making any clear cut chances.
    Beagrie put them ahead with a screamer from about 25 yards and they
    could have gone further ahead after Borrows miscued a clearence and
    Oggy, the Coventry keeper picked the ball up. Everton were awarded a
    free kick on the edge of the six yard box, but surprise, surprise with
    11 players between the ball and the line, Hinchliffe's shot was
    cleared. Coventry then equalised with their first attack right on
    half-time Nlovu (NO !! BLONG, I didn't buy a programme this week !!)
    got the ball on the edge of his box, ran all the way to the Everton box
    and hit a shot that ballooned off Horne's leg and over Southall.
    
    Coventry shaded it in the second half as Everton's confidence drained -
    Coventry came closest to scoring when Everton made two goal-line
    clearances one after the other. Preki replaced Warzycha and Snodin made
    his first appearence for nearly two years. 
    
    It was good to see Keown and Beardsley back, it's early days yet for
    Snodin, hopefully he'll rediscover his old form, but Ratcliffe was
    never the same after a bad injury. Kenny made his league debut, but had
    a disappointing game compared to his performance against Rotherham.
    Bob the Pole was pushed back to right back and had a very quiet game.
    
    With crowds down to 17,500 already, Everton will have to either slash
    prices (it costs between �8 and �12- I think to sit down) or offer
    concessions to kids/ pensioners/ unemployed/ hard-up digital employees
    otherwise crowds will drop below 10,000.

    Peter Beardsley gave an interview to Newcastle's fanzine (The Mag) and
    in it he stated that he was interested in a move back to Newcastle, but
    it was up to Howard Kendle whether he stayed or went. He said the
    usual, that he was happy and had 2 years left at Everton, but should KK
    come in for him he'd be very interested in joining Newcastle.

	It's great to see the likes of Martin Keown, Peter Beardsley
	and even the long lost Ian Snodin back in the Everton line up.
	As one of the last notes stated it's good to have a squad to select
	from again.
	Hopefully Keowns return will tighten up the defence a bit and
	Beardsley can start to link up with the forwards again and resume
	his scoring form.

	Congratulations to Ian Snodin, it must have been a long road
	back from all his injury problems. Let's hope he can soon be back
	to the sort of form he showed almost 2 years ago when he was on
	the verge of a place in the England team . (God knows England
	could do with a decent right back !).

	Good luck to the BLUES for tomorrows match at Arsenal. To be honest
	I can't see Everton coming away with a win, but then I didn't think
	we'd beat Blackburn at Blackburn, so you never know.

	to get him back to match fitness. But lets face it at the moment

    The simple answer is go out and buy someone. 
    
    Horne isn't doing what he was bought to do (no disrespect to Horne),
    but Kendall needs someone in the centre of midfield who can break up
    the oppositions attacks and supply some decent passes to Cottee,
    Warzycha etc etc. A half decent forward who can create some problems in
    the penalty area and let Beardsley/ Cottee do what they're best at.
    Everton's problem is their football is too light-weight and 'pretty' -
    there is nobody to battle. If he is trying to rebuild a team like the
    1985 team all he needs is an Andy Gray and a Peter Reid.....
    
    If I was Kendall, I'd off-load Beagrie, Johnston, Horne, Rideout, Ward
    and Harper and use the cash to get either Steve Bull or Duncan Ferguson

	I have to agree with most of this, with the possible exception of
	Alan Harper as he is a good squad/cover player. The trouble being
	where is the money going to come from, although having just seen
	the Man. Utd. note saying that Alex Ferguson has been handed a
	cheque for 3 million spondoolies, I suppose anything is possible
	if the board are desperate enough.

	Steve Bull would be a great investment but I don't know anything
	about Duncan Ferguson (Not another relation of Alex I hope !),
	has anyone got any information on him ?. I know what you mean
	about Andy Townsend but he is not supposed to be doing too well
	at the moment and we don't want another transfer failure.

	BTW who do Everton play tomorrow/sunday please.

    as well as us.This promises, to be a dour game with a crowd of maybe
    14,000.
    Only 9,451 at the Wombles game midweek ,this must be the poorest 
    attendance that i can remember.
    The reason HK cant buy anyone is because we are �3m in debt and with
    gates like this I cant see any improvement( Any jack walker Everton

    So far, it is very much like the really black days in 1983-84 - Everton
    really are only two or three players and lots of confidence off a good
    team. I believe Kendall has up until Everton get knocked out of the FA
    cup to turn things around.

	The trouble is, Paul, that to buy those 'two or three' quality
	players it's going to take ready cash, and Everton don't seem to
	have any spare at the moment.

	Having said that though, what is the alternative ? 

	It seems to me that Everton have got to find the money from somewhere
	to give them a chance of winning games, trophies etc otherwise we
	are all in for more of the same I'm afraid.

    I know Everton are supposed to be short of cash, but the warning signs
    are already there - gates down to 20,000 for the City game, 9,500 for
    the Wimbledon game - they're not going to generate cash through the
    turnstiles unless something happens.
    
    Too many of Kendall's last few signings have been nobodys - it'll take
    a big name signing to generate interest. I remember the effect that
    Andy Gray's signing had - he put 5,000 - 10,000 on the gates for his
    first few games.
    
    If he needs to raise cash - he should be flogging the likes of
    Johnston, Rideout, Horne, Beagrie etc etc now - not waiting until
    Everton are out of all the cups. The League's wide open this season,
    and although Everton won't win it, with a couple of other players -
    they could at least be challenging for it, rather than fighting against
    relegation.

    and an important goaline clearance by Jackson saved them - but who
    cares, three points are three points.
    
    Wimbledon away tonight - Cottee, Johnston and Beagrie are all playing
    against York for the reserves - youngster Tony Grant (?) is in the
    first team squad, Ablett is injured, Hinchliffe stands by.
    
    There were more rumours about Keown leaving - this time Villa were
    mentioned, Atkinson's rumoured to be lining him as a replacedment for
    McGrath. I'm dubious as there's been nothing in the local press, only

    Oh dear.......... 
    
    For some reason, Kendall decided to go for an attack consisting of
    Rideout, Harper and Hinchliffe and surprisingly, they made no
    impression at all on Chelsea's defence. The first half was a shambles
    with neither side capable of playing any football - Chelsea sneaked
    ahead when Harford got free in the six yard box and forced a brilliant
    save from Nev, but Fleck was on hand to knock the rebound in.
    
    The second half was better, Horne was replaced by Barlow, Harper by
    Waryzcha and at least they caused Chelsea a few problems - Barlow had
    the best chance when Beardsley played him through, he knocked the ball
    over the keeper and seemed certain to score when a Chelsea defender
    came from nowhere and made a miraclous clearance. Hinchliffe missed a
    sitter when he got free in the box, but the ball was on his right foot
    and by the time he tried to get it onto his left, the ball was cleared.
    
    The main highlight was meeting Liam and the other Dublin Evertonians
    for a few beers before the game. For some reason Liam's Irish flag
    seemed to upset the usually 'racially tolerant' Chelsea fans....

    I did make it in yesterday but was too busy to write..
    We had a great weekend only to be marred by one of the worst
    matchs i,ve been to.Your match report was accurate Everton
    still wouldnt,score if they were still playing.
    
    It was great putting a face to a name and i,m sure we will meet
    again ,hopefully with better results next time.
    
    tidbits : We went back to the royal oak and met Stuart Barlow after
    the match .Asking him what the inside track was ,he said that the
    players loved Kendall and would "die " for him ???????????
    I didn,t see any sign of that between 3.00 and 4.45, Did you ???

    he is tall,I have a mate who is 6 foot 4 inchs who will play for
    nothing and save the blues a few pound into the bargain "
    
    Some of the lads were talking about going to the derby game but
    there is no way I,ll make it ,Even if i had the money ,to see
    Everton getting trashed (on current form anway ).The blues shop
    was packed with "the red sh@@E " (fanzine name for those across 
    the park) buying up all the tickets for the derby game .

While struggling to get out of bed this morning I thought I over heard that
Arsenal have made a 2.5 million bid for keown...or was I dreaming.

    The Keown rumour was flying round last week - this week's rumour is the
    return of Sharp from Oldham. Kendall has got to sell before he can buy,
    so it wouldn't surpise me to see him flog Keown - he's a good player
    but Everton could probably afford to lose him if it means Kendall can
    strengthen the attack and/or midfield.

    and still managed to hammer Bradford reserves 7-0 - I think both Cottee

The Observer had an amusing go at Kendall this Sunday. Apparently, HK said that
Everton aren't far off being a chamionship side -- The Observer pointed out that
they are currently 18 places off such aspirations.

Last week HK was blaming the home pitch for Everton only scoring 4 league goals
there; the opposition didn't seem inhibited by the pitch!

Shades of '85 when HK was one game off the sack....?

    Same as has happened many times this season - Everton had plenty of the
    ball, but neither Cottee or Barlow were able to convert any chances.
    
    This is an important week for Kendall, with Chelsea on Wednesday in the
    Coca-cola cup and Liverpool at Goodison in the league next Monday. Two
    defeats and the murmurings will turn into a 'Kendall out' campaign. To be
    honest, I still don't think Everton are that far off being a good side,
    only Man Utd have murdered them - in the 2-0 defeat at home, but there
    have been too many games deceided by Everton's failure to score. As
    soon as they conceed a goal, the heads drop and defeat is inevitable.
    
    Making Goodison all-seater must take some of the blame, there's no
    atmosphere at all now, but at the end of the day, it's down to Kendall,
    he's been back for two years and has achieved nothing. I hope I'm
    wrong, but two defeats this week and he could be on his way.

	I must admit when I read in the paper (supplied by British Midland
	Airlines) that HK had said that Everton were ".. not far off being
	a championship winning side ..", I couldn't stop laughing. But now
	I find Paul's at it as well.
	I know I havn't seen the BLUES this season so I am probably not in
	a position to judge, but when the results are continually going
	against the team and they seem incapable of putting the ball in
	the oppositions net, then it's difficult to see where the next
	point is going to come from.

	Please can you tell me just what HK (and your good self, Paul) are
	basing this optimism on ? 

	Is he (HK) perhaps hoping that lightening WILL strike twice in the
	same place i.e. the 84 season, or will Paul's pre-season prediction
	come true and we'll be seeing Andy Gray in the hot seat before long.

    I dunno about championship winning, but with some confidence AND a
    couple more players, Everton could be in the top four or five. The wins
    at Blackburn and Man Utd weren't flukes, Everton are capable of playing
    good football and scoring. At the moment too many of the players are
    similar types, good at playing pretty football, but there's no one
    there to battle in midfield or up front. 
    
    The way things are going, Everton WILL be relegated - if Kendall
    doesn't realise that then maybe the alcoholic rumours are true, if he
    does, he should be flogging anyone for whatever he can get and whinging
    at the board to give him some money. The present team/squad will not
    get them out of trouble, but just one or two GOOD buys would make all
    the difference.

	Thanks for the reply Paul,

	The trouble is that Mr. Kendall seems convinced that the squad of
	players currently at his disposal IS good enough to not only get
	Everton out of their immediate position, but also to be challenging
	for honours. I say this because if he thought otherwise surely he
	would have off-loaded some players by now in an attempt to raise
	some cash for new purchases.

	Still, I'm willing to be convinced and two wins in the next 6 days
	would be a great start.

	You have to ask yourself though, if the worst comes to the worst and
	Mr. Kendall receives his P45 then who on earth is likely to be brought
	in to replace him. It certainly won't be the current No. 2, we've
	already tried him !
	Were you serious about Andy Gray being a contender ?

    I can't think of any obvious replacements for Kendall. I can't see
    Peter Reid leaving man City, Joe Royle got Oldham into the first
    division, but hasn't done much since - other than that, I'm struggling.
    I can't see any 'names' (ie Wilkinson, Atkinson) leaving to come to
    Goodison. 
    
    Gray's only experience was a short spell as number two to Atkinson at
    Villa, having said that, why not - Everton need someone with some
    passion and commitment - Gray always gave 100%, even when Everton were
    struggling like mad in 1983 - somebody's got to give them a lift if
    Kendall does go, so Gray's as good, if not better than anyone else I
    can think off.

	Let's face it Everton can't get into much more of a mess than

	Despite taking the lead twice through what were supposedly cracking
	goals from Beardsley and Barlow (his first for Everton), Chelsea
	managed to come back and force a replay at Stamford Bridge in two
	weeks time.

	According to the match summary I heard, Everton were playing good
	neat football and they even managed to convert this into goals.
	It's a pity they couldn't hold on for the win but apparantly
	Chelsea deserved a draw. I'll wait and see what Paul thought of it.

	Has anyone heard the draw for the quarter finals ?

    Well Everton managed to more than one goal at home for only the second
    time this season, but to be honest if I was a Chelsea supporter, I'd be
    disappointed with a draw.

    Everton started off fairly well, but didn't really look like scoring
    until Beardsley scored a cracker out of nothing, he belted the ball
    from about 30 yards and it flew into the top corner. Chelsea equalised
    with a fluke from Harford before Barlow scored his first goal after a
    brilliant ball from Beardsley.

    Early in the second half, Hinchliffe was replaced by Horne with Harper
    going to left back and Snodin dropping to right back, this gave control of
    the midfield to Chelsea and they dominated the last 30 minutes - it was no
    real surprise when Stuart equalised when he out jumped Keown and Ablett -
    about 5'8 getting above two 6'ers......

    The whole game was very niggling, Wise is still a dirty whinging little
    sh*t, Townsend seemed to want a scrap with anyone in a blue shirt and
    Harford was just an animal. For Everton, Johnston started badly, but
    actually played quite well once he'd figured out how to stand up, Snodin
    looks almost back to his best and must be kept in the centre of midfield,
    Kenny is growing in confidence and did a few good things last night.Harper
    was useless and the defence struggled against a fairly average Chelsea
    attack - other than the two goals, Everton produce very few chances.

    I only watched the match on the telly last night. I felt that 
    both Harper and Kenny ( no 7 I think) should have been booked for
    the vicious double tackle on Wyse.
    
    Bot Everton goals were flukes , Beardsley's was wind assisted and 
    would have gone into Hitchcock's arms otherwise. Barlow's goal
    was illegal, as when Beardsley took the free kick, the ball was moving.
    Beardsley also did this in the second half, and Everton nearly scored.
    
    Chelsea were very unlucky only to draw, and I fancy us away to 
    Palace in the next round, so it's bye bye to Merseyside for another
    year.

    When we left Ton on Sunday he said he was doubtful for last night,
    trouble getting back and all that.
    
    On last night's game I was surprised at some of the tackles and
    aggresion being shown by the Everton, it dosen't surprise me that
    Townsend retaliated.  Rightly or wrongly he's not one to stand round
    and do nothing.  I only saw the highlights and from them it appeared to
    be Everton doing most of the provoking.
    
    Still if I was an Everton fan (god, what a thought) I would take heart
    in last nights game.

    I didn't catch much of the highlights last night, but I've been to both
    the Chelsea - Everton games in the last couple of weeks, and although I
    might be 'slightly' biased, it was definitely the Chelsea players who
    were dishing out most of the rough stuff.
    
    Both Townsend and Wise have got some kind of attitude problem when they
    play Everton. I remember Townsend getting sent off a few years ago
    playing for Southampton against Everton - dunno what Wise's problem is,
    but he rates slightly higher than Vinnie Jones on the popularity stakes
    at Goodison.

    I agree with you Loz, I too thought Everton played well,
    particularly in the first half. Chelsea did well to fight
    back from being behind twice.
    
    There is still something missing about Chelsea and I can't
    put my finger on it. I noticed it against Leeds last Sunday
    and again in the thirty minutes of highlights last night.
    
    I fancy Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the replay.

    Actually, The football that Chelsea are playing this season is the
    best I've seen them play for a couple of years. They're looking more
    like Forest with all that slick ground football, I like it.

    Well now that the Chelsea supporters have done their usual and run
    away, we can get back to the real subject...  EVERTON
    
    It's the derby game tonight and it will probably my last visit to the
    hallowed turf for a while due to the horrendous cost, lack of any
    decent football and the lure of Sainsburys on a saturday afternoon.
    Rush will probably be missing for them, while Keown is doubtful and
    Harper and Hinchliffe are out.
    
    Everton have drawn Wimbledon away in the FA cup, great !
