788.0. "Higgledy-Piggledies, anyone?" by RANGER::KALIKOW (Call_me_anything_but_LateForDinner) Thu Mar 29 1990 06:51

    Here's a new (??) (I did a dir/title="higgle" with no result here :-)
    verse form that's strangely addictive once you get started. We were
    introduced to it by our college-senior daughter with a letter, herewith
    enclosed:

    =================

    Hi Folks -- New art form to transfix, amaze & astound you!!

    Note, 6th line MUST be all one word.

    Have fun in your new addiction!!

    =================

    Higgledy Piggledy
    Yale University
    Gave up mysogyny
    Opened its door.
    Coeducational
    Extracurricular
    Heterosexual
    Fun is in store!!

    =================

    Higgledy Piggledy
    White House and Senators,
    First they want money and
    then they want more.
    They made our scholarships
    non-tax-deductible,
    leaving us wondering
    what is it for?

    =================

    Higgledy Piggledy
    Tom Tom the Piper's son
    purloined a porker and
    forthwith he fled.
    Passersby said this was
    incomprehensible
    due to the Yarmulke
    worn on his head.

    =================

    Tweedledum Tweedledee
    Alice in Wonderland
    First she was tiny and
    then she was tall.
    Argued with animals
    anthropomorphical,
    Didn't accept their con-
    clusions at all.

    =================

    Higgledy Piggledy
    Young Zaphod Beeblebrox
    went for a camping trip
    gone for the day.
    Traveled the speed of light
    intergalactically,
    when he got back found
    he'd not been away!

    =================

    Higgledy Piggledy
    Something intangible
    sits on a lily pad
    combing its hair.
    Barely discernible -
    infinitesimal -
    phantasmagorical -
    not even there.

    =================

    Thus challenged, my wife and I responded thusly -- wife first --

    =================

    Higgledy Piggledy,
    letter from college kid
    sent with some poetry
    funny and cute.
    Mother, appreciative
    polysyllabically,
    takes up the challenge and
    now follows suit.

    =================

    Higgledy Piggledy
    Poetry paradigm:
    Here's how to write one if
    you've got the wit.
    Word on line six must be
    sesquipedalian;
    Prod it and poke it to
    make it all fit.

    =================

    your turn... :-) :-) Be prepared to spend lotsa time prodding and
    poking... Don't say I didn't warn you it could be addictive...

    Cheers,
    Dan Kalikow

788.4Ex Cathedra answer to 788.3 -- RTFHPM :-) :-)RANGER::KALIKOWCall_me_anything_but_LateForDinnerFri Mar 30 1990 06:3151
    In 788.3, SSDEVO::EGGERS asks "Your examples all have a syllable scheme
    of 6,6,6,4,6,6,6,4.  Is this required?"

    As the RAICOMHP (Resident Authority In Charge Of Matters Hig-Pig) (in
    my daughter's absence) let me state unequivocally: YES.

    All it is Given to us to know about Higgledy-Piggledies is Written in
    the .0 corpus.

    ...Except for the following first attempt of mine, that I scrapped in
    favor of the last H-P "instantiation" :-) :-) that I published in .0 --
    your question prompts this further revelation that I was
    (understandably, as you'll see) loath to expose the other night:

    =============================

    Higgledy Piggledy
    Poetry paradigm:
    Here's how to write one if
    you've got the wit.
    Start with one word on line
    six and work back-ER-wards;
    This one don't make it; it's
    Odorous sh*t.

    =============================

    Which goes to show that even in my earliest days of HigPigOsity, I knew
    gold from dross. Even deliciously self-referential, yea almost :-)
    recursive, DROSS.

    Not only is it literally in execrable :-) taste, it violates even its
    own stricture for ONE-wordness on line six, and it even forces that
    line to six syllables by resorting to the lame diacope of a gratuitous
    nonsense syllable.

    (Sorry, VMSDEV::HALLYB's .1, agreed that you're off, most noticeably by
    only 1 syllable in line six... but you can claim pride of place as
    "First DECcie out of the box!!")

    As for SSDEVO::EGGERS's .2 and .3 -- I like the sentiments!!
    Go, DEC!!  Yay, Sir KEN!!!

    Well, I don't know whether Knowles's 788.8 is *art*, but it sure is
    funny! :-) I loved the supreme irony of claiming enjambement when the
    whole idea was to FORCE it by the silly number sequence.

    And as for Brian's latest oeuvre in .9, I didn't realize that
    it was possible to grind out TWO H-P's in such a short time. It takes
    *me* just days... To do it at NotesFile-conversational speed is a real

788.16Double DactylsVANISH::STRANGEWAYSInfested with sponge-catsWed Apr 04 1990 01:3722
    These things have been around for quite a while. I was introduced to
    them as "double dactyls" on account of the two dactyl (- v v) feet in
    each of the six syllable lines.

    The only one I can remember dates back to my fantasy role playing days
    at college. It is found scrawled on the wall of a dark and little
    frequented alley-way:

    Chivalry Schmivalry,
    Roger the thief has a
    Perfect new method for
    Sneaky attacks:
    Characteristically
    Folks who are reading are
    Always forgetting to
    Watch their own ...

    My apologies to the original author [is that a pleonasm?] if I have
    misquoted him; the state of my memory is a homophone of the period of
    time that has past since I first heard the verse.

    Andy.
788.17"Official Rules"SSGBPM::BPM5::KENAHBeyond Need Lies DesireWed Apr 04 1990 21:5430
    I, too, learned them as "Double Dactyls" -- I first encountered
    them in a "New York" magazine contest.  There were strict rules;
    my impression was the rules were "semi-official" and not just for
    the contest.

    The meter is strict:

       DAH duh duh DAH duh duh for lines 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7;

       DAH duh duh DAH for lines 4 and 8.

    The first line is a nonsense phrase, like "Higgledy piggledy."

    The second line is a doubly dactylic name

    The sixth line is a six-syllable, doubly dactylic word.

    Like this:

    		Trippingly, rippingly
     		Mischa Baryshnikov
    		always made dancing a
    		Labour of Love;

    		Now he runs A.B.T. --
    		choreographically
    		stuck in the middle when
    		"Push Comes To Shove."

    	To de-accent the characters might not help with reading it, since
    in 3 places there is an accented "e" followed by an "a", and the
    accentuation (apart from anything else) implies separate pronunciation
    of the two vowels.

    	The first three accented characters are "o", "e", "o" accented with
    "'". The next two are both "e" accented with two dots. Then there is an
    "o" accented with "'" and another "e" accented with two dots.

    	The final two characters are "u" circumflex and beta, and were
    caused by a noisy dial-in line, and have no relevance at all.

    	If you have a VT05 or equivalent, and still have difficulty
    visualising this, it is shortly after Merry and Pippin meet The Ent, so
    you can find it in a bookshop or library. It is translated into English
    in appendix F, for those who are still confused ;-) The original
    language is Quenya.

I may have mentioned elsewhere in this file that I correspond regularly with my

I have never been more excited by or challenged by a Hig Pig.

Okay, here it is: the long-awaited, much-publicized, intensely creative Hig

mentioned the sesquipedalian word in question, thinking that the Hig Pig I was
about to receive would be this clever. I was greatly disappointed that you
didn't make the obvious and inviting leap and go for the gusto.

There are so many reasons that I'm proud of this Hig Pig, I don't even want to

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You have hit on one of my favorite things in the world. A double dactyl (or
higgledy piggledy) is a poem composed of two stanzas. Each stanza has four
lines and each line is two dactyls, except for the last line of each stanza
which is a single dactyl and then one more syllable. The first line is
typically a nonsense word, the second line is a person's name. The second line
of the second stanza is one word. And the last line of the first and second
stanza must rhyme. I have a friend who regularly composes them and the New
York Magazine competition every few years takes submissions. Herewith, some
favorites:

    No, "psychoceramicist" in honor of a legendary faculty member at Brown
    U., my graduate alma mater. Josiah Carberry, Ph.D., Adjunct Associate
    Professor of Psychoceramics, and renowned crackpot. One apparently
    passes such deeply moving rle models along to one's progeny.

    Carberry was continually said to have been seen wandering about the

    after a snapshot, it was as if an occult hand had wiped him from life's
    stage.  Curious, that...

    For the differently humored, the humor was in the intentionally
    incorrect usage. So, for penance, you're now required to explain the
    correct usage in a hig pig. Sounds like a good place to work in

    I came across this in a book of dinosaur poems for children, and
    thought there was something vaguely familiar about the rhyme scheme:

    	Leptopterygius lived in the ocean,
    	Leptopterygius swam very fast.
    	Its head was enormous, its fangs were abundant,
    	its temper ferocious, its appetite vast.

    	Leptopoterygius, big as a city bus,
    	was an insatiable ichthyosaur.
    	Anything captured by Leptopterygius
    	never was seen in the sea anymore.

    	Leptopterygius ate every morsel
    	it managed to catch in the long-ago sea,
    	so I am grateful that Leptopterygius
    	isn't around to go swimming with me.

    		- From "Tyrannosaurus was a beast,"
    		by Jack Prelutsky

    [I liked the rest of the poems, too, but the others didn't remind me of
    hig-pigs... Ogden Nash, maybe, but not hig-pigs.]

    Sorry, but including the pseudo-words "Higgledy piggledy" and
    calling it a higgledy piggledy doesn't make it one. There are
    essentially two syntactic rules plus some other constraints that
    are neither syntactic nor semantic, and examples of prior art
    abound in this library.
