760.0. "Beer names wanted" by COOKIE::DEVINE (Bob Devine, CXN) Fri Dec 29 1989 19:52

I am looking for suggestions on what to name some batches of
beer. I have recently started homebrewing beer (wonderful hobby!)
and would like to name the beer with interesting names.

    Some examples:
    	Grizzly Beer
    	Milk of Amnesia

    Puns are welcome!

How about:

	Brew Ha Ha
	Minute Malts
	Mine Stein
	Barley Kin
	Homey Foamy

(not great, I know, but off the top of my head...)

How about a name that befits the masterpiece you've created? A
one-of-a-kind classic that will stand the test of time. A beer that
could be placed in a museum for all to see...

I thought it was a work of Bob. Art must be a friend of his. :^)

Some other ideas:

	My Your Beer
	Harming Killer Brew
	Overhill Overt Ale
	Low In Brow
	Busch League
Shake's Beer (to go along with Michelangelob, but in a different
		creative venue)

As long as we're getting vulgar...

The name isn't really important; it's the slogan that goes with it. Might I
suggest:

"xxxxx beer is like love in a canoe."

Why? (<CR> to see possibly offensive answer)

                            Erisian Bitter #23

This fine New Hampshire bitter was brewed with the the finest
Nashua city tap water, the finest barley malt, and Fuggles hops
that were probably sitting around the seller's longer than they
should. A single rose petal was floated in the fermentation
vessel, lest this fine ale be in compliance with the self-
righteous, anal-compulsive, and unpronouncible German Purity
Law. No warranty is expressed or implied. Excessive use can lead
to confusion and a bad case of the giggles. For internal use
        only.

Callasti Brewing, Nashua, N.H. Lip read or die!

    The recipe:

    4 lb amber DME
    1/2 lb dark DME
    1/2 lb crystal malt
as much Fuggles or Goldings hops as you want -- I've been using
1 1/2 oz Goldings or equivalent in alpha acid and it's more bitter
than I like, but my friends all seem to like it as is.
1 packet Red Star Ale Yeast
    1 rose petal

Put the crystal malt in half a gallon of water or so and bring to a
boil. Strain off the grains and bring the water up to 2-3 gallons, add
the DME and 2/3 the hops. Boil for an hour. Add the rest of the hops &
boil for 10 minutes. Bring the water back up to five gallons, let cool
to lukewarm, add yeast starter and the rose petal. Ferment for 1 week
at room temperature. I've been doing single stage, but racking will
reduce the sediment. I've also had luck with Irish Moss finings. Prime
with 1/2 to 3/4 cup DME or sugar and bottle or keg. Drinkable after one
week of conditioning, but it prefers two or three weeks. Aging for much
longer than that doesn't seem to matter.

Thanks for the suggestions. My current batch (bubbling away right now)
is called "Excuse Me Porter". Porter is a dark ale and, well, I seem
to have over-hopped it a little bit so that it comes on a bit strong.
