Why bother doing it, then? And why use Robin Williams for that role,

better?

1155.2 | LIS was the very definition of SF camp | APLVEW::DEBRIAE | raising two thumbs up in tranquillity | Mon Aug 19 1996 11:34 | 17 |

Well it was either between Williams or Nathan Lane I bet. Personally I
could see Williams 'doing up' the character well so no problem there.
I really like the idea of the movie opening in the year the Jupiter 2
orignally "lifted off" in LIS:TOS too.
However I can't imagine a serious take on the TV programme though. Even
when it tried to be serious (try watching the 'serious' pilot for
laughs today) it still came across as high camp.
Does it say something about the 1990's that we are taking all the fun
60's camp out of today's remakes - first "Batman" and now this?

Remember that the "Batman" movies weren't intended to be models
of the TV show ... they were intended to be models of "The Dark
Knight", which was very, well, dark.

I know. The high camp "Batman" wasn't true to its "Dark Knight" roots.
But it was the more fun of the two concepts the new films could have
chosen to jump off from.
I wonder if this LIS production would see itself in the light of
"finally doing LIS right" to restore LIS's image in the SF circles...

1155.5 | I dunno, this casting rumor is sounding far-fetched | DECWIN::RALTO | Jail to the Chief | Mon Aug 19 1996 15:29 | 21 |
| Maybe I've gotten old and cynical ("maybe"?), but the more I think
about it, the more I think that Mark Goddard has gotten hold of some
unreliable information regarding the casting, and just parroted it on
that radio talk show. I've seen the Dr. Smith casting rumor/desire
being bandied about on the Lost in Space listserver (or whatever they
call those automatic mailing list things) for months now. He may have
just picked up something from that (or one of its readers) and decided
it was for real.
Also, the "dysfunctional family" stuff appears to be based on a summary
of an alleged early story outline that was posted on one of the "Lost
in Space"-related Web sites months ago, which may or not be reliable
(it's been officially "denied", but that could mean just about anything
as well).
Given that, I'll probably refrain from posting any more rumors about
this movie, even though I've seen others. I mean, how many people
really care that "The [new] Jupiter 2 is still saucer shaped"?
Other than me, that is? :-)

Why Keanneau (sp) Reeves? I wouldn't put him in that role at all as I
don't think he has developed enough to carry this type of movie. I only
saw part of Johnny Mnemonic so can't say how well he did in it, but
other reviews of his other films haven't been too weel/kind either.

Six or seven years ago, the original robot was bought by collector(s)
and completely re-furbished, and it's in great condition. Since around
1990, it's made several appearances at conventions, in news features,
and on the Sci-Fi channel (the latter with the "original guy" in the
suit, Bob May).
Still, I doubt they'll use this robot for the movie because, as much as
I love the guy :-), he does look a bit dated, technologically. That
is, he looks like what mid-1960's people thought a futuristic robot
would look like.
re: Keanu Reeves as Major West
Someone said (oh-oh, more rumor :-)) that Reeves already has a filming
commitment that's supposedly around the same time as the projected
"Lost in Space" filming, so that reportedly makes it unlikely that
he'd play the Don West role.
The name that I hear on most fans' wishlists (strictly as a "wish",
not a rumor as to the actual casting) to play Dr. Smith is someone
named Tim Curry. I have no idea who this is, so I can't comment, but
maybe some of you folks know him. Fans who've seen his work keep
saying he'd be "perfect" [insert shoulder shrug here].

"McHale's Navy"? Oh no, say it ain't so... Do I dare ask who's
been cast in this? Besides that, most of the audience for that
series at the time consisted of WWII vets who were... about the
same age that I am now (gulp...). Who's going to be interested
in such a movie now? Anyway, they already sorta re-made "McHale's
Navy" for all intents and purposes, with that recent Kelsey Grammar
flick that I accidentally saw while cringing on an airplane flight.
I do wish they'd stop making these movies based on old TV series.
They almost never work, at least for me. Leonard Nimoy was right,
it's almost impossible to "re-capture that lightning in a bottle"...
it's the particular actors, writers, producers, and even the era,
that made a TV show popular in its time and place. You can't just
take the concept and re-package it, it's not the same.
re: .14
If you want to have something with which to compare the new movie,
the cable Sci-Fi Channel carries the old series, currently on weekday
mornings at 9:00 AM. Also on Columbia House Video, mail-order.

Also producing will be Mark Koch, chairman of Prelude Pictures, which

Gary Oldman is becoming a big name. He played Dracula in "Bram Stoker's

William Hurt and Heather Graham To Star With Gary Oldman In New
Line Cinema's `Lost In Space'
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- William Hurt is in final negotiations
to star with Heather Graham in New Line
Cinema's highly anticipated science-fiction action-adventure thriller "Lost
In Space," it was announced today by Richard
Saperstein, Executive Vice President of New Line Productions.
Based on the classic 1960s television series, the film adaptation begins
production this March in London under the direction
of Stephen Hopkins ("Ghost In The Darkness"). Hurt and Graham will star as
John and Judy Robinson, a father and daughter
who, along with other family members, become perilously lost in space when
their rocketship is sabotaged. As previously
announced, Gary Oldman stars as the despicable Dr. Smith. New Line
anticipates releasing the special effects-packed film
next year and hopes to develop "Lost in Space" as a franchise.
"As our tentpole project for next year, this is one of New Line's biggest
priorities and it is coming together beautifully,"
Saperstein said. "Heather Graham and William Hurt add to a fantastic cast
and a uniquely talented production team that will
make `Lost in Space' one of the most anticipated films of 1998."
New Line secured the remake rights to "Lost in Space" from Prelude Pictures
in August, 1994. Veteran filmmakers Mace
Neufeld and Robert Rehme will executive produce the film, with Prelude's
Chairman Mark Koch sharing producing duties
with screenwriter Akiva Goldsman ("Batman and Robin," "A Time to Kill") and
Hopkins. Saperstein was responsible for
landing the project at New Line.
"Lost in Space," which ran on CBS from 1965 to 1968, chronicled the
adventures of the Robinson family, the crew of a
spaceship who wander from planet to planet in their quest to return home.
Hurt can currently be seen as a bitter investigative-journalist-turned-
tabloid-reporter in the box-office hit "Michael." After
making his debut in "Altered States," Hurt went on to star in some of the
most memorable films of the 1980s, including the
erotic thriller "Body Heat;" the influential ensemble comedy "The Big
Chill;" James Brooks' newsroom comedy "Broadcast
News," for which he received both Oscar and Golden Globe Award nominations;
the screen adaptation of Anne Tyler's "The
Accidental Tourist;" "Children of a Lesser God;" and his Oscar winning role
as a South American prisoner obsessed with
movies in "Kiss of the Spider Woman." He has also starred in "Eyewitness,"
"Gorky Park," "A Time of Destiny," "I Love You
To Death," and "Alice." Last year, Hurt starred in Wayne Wang's acclaimed
drama "Smoke," and recently completed
production on "Dark City" for director Alex Proyas and New Line Cinema.
Heather Graham is among Hollywood's most sought-after actresses since
starring in the sleeper hit "Swingers." Along with
"Lost in Space," she is currently in production with Robert Downey Jr. in
"Two Girls and A Guy," and will next be seen
starring in New Line's comedy "Boogie Nights," with Burt Reynolds, Mark
Wahlberg and Julianne Moore.
Bolstered by a number of impressive and acclaimed performances, she has
starred in independent feature films ranging from
Gus Van Sant's "Drugstore Cowboy" to David Lynch's "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk
With Me." Her other film credits include
"Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle," "Diggstown," "Even Cowgirls Get The
Blues" and "Six Degrees of Separation."
Graham's deal was negotiated by Michael Davis at CAA and longtime managers
Heather Reynolds and Richard Picerni of
First Artists Management. Hurt is represented by Hylda Queally at the
William Morris Agency. SOURCE New Line Cinema
