| Actually WCVB was better this year. They only pre-empted two of the
ABC-covered Indycar races, a huge step up from 1993, when I think they
only carried Long Beach and Indy. They also carried both ABC NASCAR
races. If all you race fans out there get a thank-you letter out to
WCVB, it might convince them to carry the majority of races in 1995 as
well.
If we thank them for doing the right thing, rather than beat them up
for being anti-racing bigots, we might have more success.

| I've seen some cryptic messages on r.a.s.indy that imply Tony George
and the IRL have released their 1996 chassis rules. I have seen no data
on the rules, though. Tony Bettenhausen said that he expected the
rules to reduce the size of the 1996 Indy 500 field, which implies the
current generation cars could not be easily retrofitted to meet the '96
regs.
Does anyone have more details on the new regs, or a pointer to same?
Thanks,

Rahal's unrelenting pressure caught up with Andretti, causing him to touch the
barriers half way round the final lap. So Rahal inherits Andretti's second
place, and rubs it in by stopping to pick the guy up on the colling down lap!
Seriously, all credit to Newman-Haas, Tracy (and nearly Andretti) - they've come
bouncing back with a vengeance. Rahal showed what a superb driver he is - and
how much class he's got.
What's gone wrong with Penske - are they putting their effort into the ovals?

49.18 | Ve vill haff clean starts! | LJSRV2::ALLEGREZZA | George Allegrezza @LJO | Thu Apr 27 1995 09:56 | 24 |
| It does seem to be an ongoing problem. I was at Nazareth this past
weekend, and aside from the first three rows, everybody was all over
the place on the start. So it's not limited just to street circuits.
The series is so competitive now, it makes the motivation to shoot for
the tiniest advantage too attractive to pass up.
One possible way to make changes is to announce at a driver's meeting
that "we'll keep doing yellow flag starts until you nitwits line it
up," then DO IT and keep doing it at every race until they get the
message. Also, don't drop the green until the front row is almost at
start/finish (NASCAR handles this very well), and penalize the hell out
of people who jump the start. (Passing under the yellow is illegal, you
know :-) ).
A long time ago, the widely feared USAC chief steward, Harlan Fengler,
made this one of his prime hot buttons. An entire generation of
drivers came up in an environment where clean starts were mandatory and
you got your ass kicked if you didn't fall in line. NASCAR doesn't seem
to have the problem, although that may be because a Winston Cup car
doesn't accelerate as well as an IC. Perhaps we need some dictatorial
behavior from the officials on this subject. Think of it as training
the next generation. :-)

| I agree with the last two noters, be strict.
They always have said you can't win the race on the first lap which is
true. With the talent the IndyCar series has, they could get this
straightened out rather easily I would think.
I'd suggest that they practice it a bit. For the drivers coming into
the series that are not used to ovals or the rolling start, why not
practice it?
I would agree to have them yellow flag the start as long as
the laps did not count until they went green initially.
I remember hearing something at the 500 a couple of years ago that they
actually like them "strung out" so as to reduce the risk of an accident
at the start.
Maybe a write in campaign to Andrew Craig and/or Tony George would
help...

There is still a season going....at least up here we get the coverage.
It appears as though the points race is looking more like a Nascar
series, what with a new points leader every race or so. This will make
the racing alot more exciting throughout the season, unlike last year.
With Penske, and little Al, being so dominant last year the season was
so unbalanced that the races weren't even fun to watch. IMO it would be
interesting to see the championship go to one of the so-called Brat
Pack ( Gordon, Villeneuve, or Tracy ). But it would also be nice to see
Scott Brayton finally get one. That would be especially good for
Firestone in their first year back.
I wonder if Andretti will get that elusive win he's fought for this
season. At the end of the 94 season when I heard of the Newman/Haas
team line up of Andretti and Tracy, I figured it would be Michael
upstaging Paul all year, but it appears I was wrong. Michael is
consistantly faster than the rest of the cars, and really does deserve
to win one.(even though I hate the BUM)

No, but CART has a longstanding ride height rule. Combined with soft
springs, a lowered ride height will increase downforce by making the
shaped underbody more efficient in generating negative lift.
Penske uses the F1-like Jabroc panels for protection. The plank rule
would only be effective with a flat-bottom formula.

| Following is a statement from Galles team protesting the
disqualification of Little Al.
The following is text of the protest Team Penske has filled following the
disqualification of Al Unser Jr from the Budweiser/G.I. Joe's 200:
6/25/95 Portland Oregon
Penske Racing hereby protests the decision of the stewards to disqualify
Al Unser's car as the winner of the Portland Indy Car event.
Penske's position is that the car experienced a mechanical failure (IE:
The rear skid plate was broken off the car as a result of the car riding
over uneven surfaces on the race track). Penske's points are as follows:
1) Under Rule 6.13, the stewards have the authority to disregard the loss
of the skidplate "for all purposes".
2) The car was inspected repeatedly during the course of the weekend and
passed inspection in every case.
3) The car should be reinspected with the damaged part re-installed as
established by past precedence.
4) Failing the location of the damaged part, the car should be reinspected
with a substitute part.
5) The car is to be impounded under the auspices of CART/Indy Car for
further evaluation.

| Well, we need to be realistic when comparing seasons. He's made a few
mistakes, sure. When compared to the dream season of 1994, he's not
doing very well. But, compared to the last eight or so seasons, he's
doing just a little worse than average. Remember, 1994 was Penske's
first championship year since 1988 (Sullivan). He's always been a
strong contender, and his drivers have won races, but he's not been
really dominant in the way McLaren was in F1 during the late 1980s
(except at Indy).
Penske has to protest to save face, but I'm sure he doesn't expect the
protest to be upheld.

| Read in the paper yesterday that my man Tracy went and broke his foot.
I would imagine this can only fuel the fire in his relationship with
Carl Haas. The article stated that Tracy was at a Go-cart race as a
celebrity host and decided to get into the race instead. He then got
angry with another racer on the track and gave him a GOOD bump and
ended the day with a broken appendage as a result. The silver lining of
it all though is that he was authorized by the CART medics to race on
Sunday. Good thing too...not good for the career to get injured playing
around and have to sit out a race or two. It would almost be
disasterous for the Newman/Haas team to lose the only driver they have
who's winning any races.( no disrespect to Michael )
The article also stated that Tracy and Haas got into a bit of a verbal
scuffle over the condition of Tracy's car in the last race. It seem's
that Paul thought his car had a used clutch in it for the race, which
was the reason the car broke in the race. Carl promptly chastized him
and stated that it was a new clutch. I can't forsee this team staying
together next season. I hope that Penske ( as much as I hate the BUM )
decides to exercise his rights on Tracy for the next season. Given the
expert training with Mears combined with Penske's ( usually ) excellant
chassis', I think Tracy could actually win a championship.

It was a good show for the most part, lot of the "new" drivers up near

Interesting quotes from both drivers listed in the ESPNSportzone WWW.
Michael admitted that Al was moving a little faster, but then
disappeared from view, so he went to take his driving line and the rest
is history. Little Al simply said that he was very disappointed in
Michael'd manuever.
I too thought Al turned into MA, but when you think about it he turned

trying to avoid contact and get behind MA.
Oh well, chalk it up to experience.

P.S. Tracy also fought a great race but the spin trying for 2nd really
messed his day up. Also sad to see Pruett lose it over a rad hose. Nice
paint job on the car though.

| Villenueve is within 0.5 sec. of Hill; no word on how the engines,
setups, tires, etc. compare, so it's hard to draw any conclusions.
No question the kid is fast, though.
Juan Fangio II will be in the PacWest seat at Mid-Ohio. This deal is
sanctioned by Dan Gurney, BTW.
The Michigan race was great. Having seen the race in person last year,
I got so much more out of the coverage this time around (as did the
boys in the truck, obviously ;-) ). Hats off to Johnstone and Ribero
for their outstanding performances, and how about that Scooter Pruett?
His duel with Mr. Unser was one for the archives.

| Talk is that Robby Gordon is now looking to get out of his contract
with Derrick Walker. Seems they've had a bit of a falling out. Gordon
is rumored to be talking to Arciero/Wells Racing. Newman/Haas was also
talked about, but after his incident in Cleveland one would think that
that is over.
Also, it looks as though Emmo is going to leave Penske racing. No word
yet if Tracy is going back to Roger. If he returns to Patrick racing what
does that do to Scott Pruett?
Danny Sullivan is also contemplating retirement.

Digital Canada is one of the sponsors of the Molson Indy in Vancouver
1-3 September, 1995.
WWW pages mentioning Digital are in place:
http://indy-vcr.molson.com/guide11.html
http://indy-vcr.molson.com/press-releases/digital.html
Owen.
The text of the press release follows:
Digital Equipment of Canada Limited is partnering with EDS
Motorsports to provide the official EDS Timing and Scoring
System at this year's Molson Indy Vancouver during the
Labour Day Weekend. Earlier this summer in Toronto's Molson
Indy, and for the first time at any IndyCar event, the
attendees were able to access real-time race statistics in
the Executive Pit Suite. Up until this event, access to the
real-time Timing and Scoring data had only been available to
race officials, the media, and the race teams in the pits.
Through use of Digital Equipment's Venturis 575 PCs on a
Fibre Optical and Ethernet network connected to a feed
provided by EDS to their race server, Digital is able to
provide access to access to the EDS Timing and Scoring
real-time data to attendees in all Pit Suites throughout
the weekend event in Vancouver. Executive Pit Suite attendees
will be able to view up-to-the minute information, which
adds to the involvement and enjoyment of the race activities.
It also demonstrates a working partnership between EDS and
Digital to deliver this solution in an environment hostile
to electronic equipment.
The timing and scoring system developed by EDS provides
immediate access to nearly every aspect of the operation of
of an IndyCar while functioning in one of the world's most
hostile testing environments for technology. The EDS system
system allows the viewer real-time access and details to
driver position, lap and speed, number of pit stops and laps,
time and distance between drivers, and the distance a driver
is from the leader. The system which operates by placing a
a transmitter in each car, also provides historical data and
general information on each driver and team, as accurate as
.0001/second.
The network receives data that is transmitted from the cars
to seven time lines embedded in the track, then it processes
the information and immediately delivers it to race officials,
teams, media and fans in real time. The recipients can then
view and/or configure data in a variety of ways to suit their
individual purposes. The EDS system uses wireless technology
for the distribution of data and the information can be
accessed by use of a laptop PC.
"The decision to partner with Digital to provide the EDS
Timing and Scoring System to the Executive Pit Suites was
simple. We knew we could rely on Digital to do the job right,"
said Susan M. DiCosmo, project manager for Motorsports at EDS.
"This involvement by Digital to provide EDS data in an easy-
to-view format to Pit Suite attendees greatly assists in
enabling the viewer with the knowledge how competitive
IndyCar is, and keeps those attendees, who may be potential
sponsors or future business partners, directly involved with
the fast moving activities trackside."
"This business partnership between Digital Equipment of
Canada and EDS Motorsports to provide their Timing and
Scoring System data to the Pit Suites gives me the opportunity
to invite guests that are not avid IndyCar fans and within
minutes increase their knowledge and enjoyment of the sport
exponentially. By providing this service to all the Pit
Suites, Digital is able to show our customers and future
business partners that we are able to work successfully in
a hostile environment, and can provide the products and
technical expertise to maintain such projects." said Ron
Catcheside, Canadian communication manger, Digital Equipment
of Canada. "This on-going partnership with EDS to provide
this service has proven to be successful."
EDS is a leader in the global information services industry.

EDS Motorsports, a division of EDS is the Official Information
Technology Provider to IndyCar.

| Jacques Villineuve will be leaving IndyCar and going to Formula 1 it
has been reported. No word yet as to who is will be going to drive for.
Also, Christian Fittipaldi may be moving to Newman/Hass from Walker
racing. If so, Derrick Walker could lose both Robby Gordon and
Fittipaldi leaving him searching for new drivers in '96.
Carl hogan may also team up with Roger Penske and field a 3rd team with
Paul Tracy behind the wheel. That will be decided by next week.
Rauol Boesel could also be shopping for a team if Rahal goes with just
one team (himself) next season.

| I caught the last 30 or so laps of the race yesterday. Another case of Andretti
luck just a few laps from the end. Jacques bouncing off Rahal and kicking him
into the wall and it looks all but sewn up for Jacques to win the championship.
Three races left and he has a 152 to 111 point lead or something close to that.
Glad to see Al Jr winning again, even though it looked like Michael had it all
going his way until the car died.

| Re Digital at Vancouver....
Does anyone have a contact in Digital Canada regarding the EDS deal for
Digital to provide timing systems?
We are going out to Laguna Seca and as RAC timekeepers in the UK would
like to have a look at the Indy Car system in action. The people we
work with in the UK also provide the systems for FOCA/Tag Heur at GPs
and we would like to do some comparisons.
Thanks in advance
