| How does the timing on an event like this work? Are you expected to
maintain say 30 mph over the length of the section, thus making it
really a race to minimize points?
Doug.

| No, this is a real speed event. Even though the speeds seem relatively low,
they are fast enough to do real damage to cars, as Carl showed. They simply
ad up all your times for all the stages and base the finishing positions on
those.

I did!!! Ain't it a *BEAUT*? (At least the side with the wrinkled fender
was away from the camera... :-) Then of course right below us they have
a picture of Bob Elliott's GTI shooting out a wicked rooster-tail, blurred
background and all, made us look like we were having engine problems or
something. I called my codriver Ted right up and told him if he sees anyone
with a camera on the side of a stage to let me know so we can roost them too.

SCCA Pro Rally Championship:
PORSCHE WINS SECOND STRAIGHT WASHINGTON RALLY AS TOP
TWO FINISHERS DISQUALIFIED FOR SPEEDING ON TRANSIT
OLYMPIA, Wash. -- April 24 -- When rally leader Paul
Choiniere rolled his Audi Quattro on the Capitol Forest
logging roads mid-way through Saturday's Wild West PRO Rally,
the other top competitors started a bizarre chase for the top
position - eventually claimed by the Porsche Carrera 4 team
of Jeff Zwart, from Woody, Colo. and Martin Headland, from
Calgary, Alberta.
Zwart, who scored his second straight SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally
series win having won the rally here last month, was declared
the winner after the top two finishers were disqualified.
"We have a hard and fast rule about drivers speeding on
public roads between racing stages, and Carl Merrill's Ford
Escort and Doug Shepherd's Eagle Talon - who had finished
one-two - were caught by us on radar going over the posted
speed limit," said Bob Grass, Wild West organizer.
"If we are to continue to work with the forest service and
the local communities, we must all obey the rules," he said.
Of the 24 national rally starters, only 13 finished the
grueling two-day event.
Henry Joy, from Wilmette, IL, was second in his Mitsubishi
Eclipse along with Canadian co-driver Brian Maxwell.
Greg Lund and his wife and co-driver Lynne, from Kent, WA,
were third overall and first in Group A in their Mazda
323GTX.
Other class winners included Goran Ostlund/Steve Baker,
Seattle (Group 2); Dave Turner/Bill Gutzmann, Hemet, CA
(Production); and Selcuk Karamonoglu/John McArthur, Bath, ME
(Production GT).
In a PRO Rally, each team consists of a driver and a
co-driver (or navigator), and the exact course is kept
secret until just before the event. The cars then start at
one-minute intervals and race at top speed against the clock
over competition stages - in this case the closed forest
roads of the Capitol Forest.
Speeds of more than 120 miles-per-hour can be reached on
long straight-aways, with the team achieving the fastest
combined times over the competition stages winning
the event. Drivers stay on the existing roads, and never
blaze their own trails.
SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally events run around the country, in
conditions from the blazing Arizona desert in August to the frozen
tundra of Maine in December, and pit Audis, Mitsubishis, Porsches,
Fords, Toyotas, Subarus and other marques against each other.
The 1994 SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally Series consists of eleven events,
and is sponsored by Michelin Tire Corporation, with field
administration by the American Rally Association, and series sanction
by the Sports Car Club of America.

April 30, 1994
Coaticook, Quebc
With an eye on capturing as many SCCA divisional points as possible with
our limited amount of money, my codriver Ted and I decided to enter a
divisional event just north of the Vermont border in Coaticook, Qubec.
(The new divisional rules allow Canadian events to count just as any other
out-of-division event.) So for a mere $200 entry fee and a 4-hour tow,
we got a compact single-day event with 110 kilometers (68 miles) of racing,
a much better deal than anything we could find in the U.S. I was also
hoping that, being a relatively small event, none of the major teams would
show up, and in addition to collecting the maximum number of points in our
class (2-wheel-drive, over 2 liters displacement), we could also finish
well overall.
Ted managed to convince me that the Omni's fading gold paint job was
unbecoming of a proper rally car, so we did some body work to it and repainted
the whole thing red and white. It came out pretty well, I thought, and at
least now it looks like some kind of race car. The paint job was less than
a week old when we arrived at rally headquarters, and we promptly got a door
ding when another competitor parked next to us and opened his door into ours.
My hopes of no one else showing up at the event were quickly extinguished
when we pulled into the hotel and saw fellow Americans Ivan and Olga Orisek
with their all-wheel-drive Mitsubishi Eclipse, and they told us that John
Buffum and Carl Merrill would be there with the Ford Cosworth Escort rally
car from hell, along with half a dozen other big names in North American
rallying. Still, we were given car number 7, my first single-digit entry!
(Hey, these little things are all that hold the dream together sometimes!)
The first stage was a little farm road on the way out of town. It started
out on pavement, then turned to loose gravel after a few tenths of a click
(kilometer). The loose surface made it slippery, and the road was built
up above the surrounding fields, so a little slip off the road would be
more serious than usual here. The car was running well, but I wasn't with
the program; I was missing glimpses over crests and other clues I could use
to keep more speed. We had a disappointing score for the stage.
The next few stages weren't much better. Some still had snow on them, and
having no experience running my specialized gravel tires on snow, but having
heard horror stories, I slowed way down for the white stuff. Then there were
fast sections across muddy flats, and I didn't know how fast I could corner
on them. Something was wrong in my head- instead of "becoming one" with the
car and going with it, I was just a guy with a steering wheel in my hands
thinking, "What am I doing here?"
Even though many of the stages were extremely short (less than 2 miles), the
car starting a minute behind us (a Ford Mustang) was consistently pulling into
the controls at the stage finishes just as we were pulling out. Every time
that happens, it means he was about 45 seconds faster than us. That's
a *lot* to make up on a 2 mile stage! I started getting really ticked at
myself for being such a wimp, and I decided to let it hang out a little.
The next stage was one we'd run once before, and it had a scary start. It was
clear and open so you were free to get going real fast, then it went down the
side of a hill and took a really fast left sweeper past a house and over a
knoll. We'd done it once before so we knew there was nothing to fear on the
other side of the knoll, but it took committment to hold the pedal down at
75+ MPH as we flew past the house, cut left before the top of the crest, and
the tail stepped out and the car unweighted, all before we could get a look
at the corner exit. Then it was across some swampy lowlands, over a couple
of log bridges, and a 90 right at a "T". The previous road was fast, but
this one was *really* fast. There were a couple sharpish 3rd gear corners,
but mostly it was fast sweepers, and the speedo was pegged in 5th a couple
times. At least that pesky Mustang didn't show up at the finish while we were
still there.
Downhills are tough for everybody, but front-wheel-drivers have it worst, and
the next few stages had us decending what seemed more like landslide paths
than roads. It started with a straight and narrow descent of a fairly mild
hill, but with occasional drop-offs that would get the car slightly airborne
while we fought to keep the car in the narrow rocky tracks. It wasn't "how
fast can you go?" here, because the road was straight and you could see well
ahead; it was "how fast do you dare?" After a left at a blind fork over a
crest is where the real descent began. A tight left helped kill some speed
for the challenge to follow, which first involved running between two
three-foot-tall snowbanks with a gap only inches wider than the car, then
onto a surface consisting of baseball-sized chunks of broken rock, which
took a sharp right and we skittered down a hill so steep that there was no
way we could have ever gone up it if we had to. It seemed almost like a
free-fall, and the compression at the bottom forced up back in our seats
as we jumped back on the gas, crossed a wooden bridge, splashed through a
puddle, and took a right at a "T". We took off down a rutted path through
the snow along the river.
Much of the rest of the event is blurred together in my memory now, but I do
remember a few isolated moments. One was as we raced along a high ridgetop,
the road was straight and fast, but it rose and fell away in a series of jumps.
Mostly we weren't getting much air from them, but as we enterered the trough
before the last one, all I could see ahead was a wall of brown dirt and
blue sky, and as we launched off the top, I could see the hills and farmland
all around, and the 90-degree left ahead of us at the bottom of the hill.
It felt like one of those "Dukes of Hazzard" slow-motion jumps- I could hear
Ted yelling "Yeehaw!" as we floated through the air. My mind has probably
made this into more than it was, but it felt like we were airborne for a good
two seconds. Remarkably, the landing was smooth; we bounced once, but kept
it straight and made the corner at the bottom of the hill!
They ended up canceling the second-to-last stage because the course opening
car (a Toyota All-Trac Celica) got stuck in a mud hole that we'd been racing
though as part of a previous stage, and the 4WD truck they sent in after it
couldn't pull it out. Fine, I didn't like that hole anyway.
There were unexplained complications getting the results tabulated, so we
sat and sat in the bar waiting. Well, the delays might have been explained,
but only in French, which none of us understood, so we just hung around and
ordered more Labatt's. Around 2 o'clock I finally called it a night, but Ted
and service guy Rick waited till they posted the scores around three. They
put us sixth overall, which was later upgraded to fifth when the winners
(Buffum/Merrill in the Escort) were disqualified for switching drivers during
the event.
So I think if I'd been mentally prepared at the start of the event I might
have picked up another place or two, but I was still satisfied with the finish
considering there was some very fast competition. We got first place in my
class and the maximum number of Divisional points for the finish. The next
event is Susquehannok Trails Pro Rally (STPR) on June 3-4 in Wellsboro, PA.

But Carl, when you co-drove for me at the 1988 Bryar rallycross we had car #8!
Yes, I agree, getting a single digit car number is something to shoot for.
It's funny though, I had #6 at the Sabattus winter rally in Maine one year and
ended up finishing in 19th spot... But then I had car #15, out of 15, at the
Rally Bras d'Or in Sydney, NS and ended up 5th overall and 1st in class!
If you see Rick Davis at STPR, let him know I have an Isetta. Gee, I wonder
how it would handle the water crossing.....

>From Andy Schupack, Michelin SCCA PRO Rally Series:
THE STUDENT SNOOKERS THE MASTER TO STEAL A MICHELIN PRO
RALLY WIN AT SUSQUEHANNOCK TRAIL PRO RALLY IN PENNSYLVANIA
WELLSBORO, Penn. -- June 5 -- As two-time defending champions
in the SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally series, Paul Choiniere, from
Shelburne, Vermont, and co-driver Jeff Becker, know a thing
or two about rally strategy, but 11-time champion John
Buffum, knows a lot more. Yet it was Choiniere - also
Buffum's step-son - and Becker who used the rules to their
advantage to win the Susquehannock Trail PRO Rally in their
Audi Quattro S2.
Buffum, from Colchester, Vermont, and Audi Quattro car-owner
Bruno Kreibich, were leading the rally at the mid-point, and
more importantly, were first on the road for each stage,
avoiding the extremely dusty conditions that were plaguing
the other competitors. Using a legal, but little used
scoring maneuver similar to adding a stroke to a golf
scorecard in exchange for moving your ball from a rough,
Choiniere and Becker were able to position themselves first
on the road for the last five stages of the event - a move
which was worth at least 20 seconds a stage. The defending
champions went on to a three minute-plus win over Buffum and
Kreibich, despite transmission problems on the last stage.
By the way, Buffum drove seven stages and Bruno drove five -
an action legal under this year's rulebook. Last year, the
pair swapped driving and co-driving duties as well at STPR,
only to be disqualified from scoring national points.
The Carl Merrill/Jon Wickens, from Ogunquit, Maine, in a Ford
Escort Cosworth - which lost time early in the event with a
loose water hose - was third, with the Henry Joy/Brian
Maxwell Mitsubishi Eclipse, from Wilmette, Illinois, fourth.
Choiniere takes over the series driver points lead with
58 points, while previous series leader Jeff Zwart, with his
Porsche Carrera 4, skipped the event to prepare his car for
the July 4 Pike's Peak Hillclimb. Zwart has 51 points.
In the other classes, Yvan Joyal and Raymond Cadieux from
Montreal won the Group 2 class in a Toyota Corolla; Rick
Davis and Ben Greisler, from West Chester, Penn, were winners
in Group A in their BMW M-3; Selcuk Karamanoglu and John
McArthur, from Bath, Maine, captured Production GT in their
Mitsubishi Eclipse; the Tad Ohtake/Bob Martin Ford Escort GT,
from Dearborn, Mich., won the Production class; and Greg
Healey/John MacLeod, from Hartsville, SC, drove their Dodge
Ram 50 to a Rally Truck class win.
In all, 31 of the 53 starters completed the high-speed, 124-
mile course which has the fastest roads on the SCCA/Michelin
PRO Rally circuit.
The next event on the SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally circuit will be the
Prescott Forest PRO Rally, to be held in Prescott, Arizona,
July 8 - 9.

>From Andy Schupack, SCCA Michelin PRO Rally Series:
CANADIAN BROTHERS EDGE U.S. RALLY CHAMPION IN FINAL MICHELIN EVENT
RUMFORD, Maine -- December 4 -- The final round of the 1994 SCCA/Michelin
PRO Rally series through the Boise Cascade and Seven Islands forests here
turned out to be the closest of the season as Frank and Dan Sprongl of
Mississauga, Ontario, Canada edged Paul Choiniere, from Shelburne,
Vermont, and Jeff Becker by only five seconds at the fourth annual Maine
Forest Rally.
Sprongl, who clinched the Canadian Rally National Championship just last
week, had a 40 second lead in his Audi Quattro S-2 after Friday's action,
but Choiniere's Hyundai Elantra, making its national debut, caught Spongl
on the last stage and looked like it was headed for Paul's fifth win of
the year. Unfortunately for Choiniere and Hyundai, the drive shaft broke
only a quarter of a mile from the finish, and Sprongl scored his
narrow win.
Ogunquit, Maine's Carl Merrill, the only local-based entry, was third in
his Ford Escort Cosworth.
Other class winners included Bob Elliott/John Hart, Rutland, Vermont, in a
VW GTI (fourth overall and first in the Production class); Vinnie
Frontinan/Frank Arruda, Cambridge, Mass., Toyota All-trac (sixth overall
and first in Group A); Cal Landau/Eric Marcus, Coraopolis, Penn.,
Mitsubishi Eclipse (10th overall and first in Production GT); and
Karl Scheible/Wayne Scheible, Spencerport, NY, VW GTI (11th overall and
first in Group 2).
In the battle for the Group A season championship, the Jamaican team of
Peter Moodie and Michael Finnell drove their Mazda 323GTX to a second
place class finish to edge the BMW M-3 duo of Rick Davis and Ben Greisler,
from West Chester, Penn. Moodie won the title by six points over Davis,
who lead most of the season.
Other year-end champions included Paul Choiniere (overall national
champion - fourth title in five years); Selcuk Karamanoglu, Bath Maine,
Mitsubishi Eclipse (Production GT); Dave Turner, Hemet, California,
Mitsubishi Eclipse (Production); Goran Ostlund, El Salvador, Saab 99
(Group 2); Jeff Hendricks, Prescott, Arizona, Jeep Comanche (Rally Truck).
