216.0. "DEC-Ferrari F1 sponsorship" by AD::YEN () Fri Sep 07 1990 18:40

As most of you may know, DIGITAL is a major sponsor of Scuderia
Ferrari, and the DEC logo is carried on the nose and wing endplates of
the 641's at every race. I would like to know the extent of the
involvement (does DEC give money, or provide the electronic in-car
instruments and other electronics, or is it some other arrangement?).
Secondly, I have heard that some promotional materials (i.e.
posters, and other such) are available. I would like to get my hands
on some, being a great Nigel Mansell fan.

I would hardly call Digital a 'major' sponsor of Ferrari. Fiat *owns* Ferrari
and they only get a sticker about 2 feet long....

Anyway, it appears that DEC Italy has donated some hardware for CAD use to
Ferrari and that prompted the stickers on the front wing. This deal has been
discussed in MARVIN::CARS_UK a bit as well.

There were Digital billboards up in at least two places around Monza that
were visible on T.V. this weekend.

I don't have time to post everything right now, I'm just trying to
catch up on my first day back at work from a trip to European DECUS
that included two weekends in Milan to attend events at Monza (the
Italian F3 championship round on 9/1 and the Italian GP the next
    weekend).

Anyway, Digital in Italy does have a fairly significant presence at the
Monza autodrome for the Italian GP, I will post later (within a few
days, as time permits) more of the details, along with a report on the
    two race weekends.

216.5Question on DEC sponsorshipELMAGO::PGORDONMon Oct 01 1990 12:048
I, also, am interested in DEC's involvement as a sponsor. Is there
any type of work that needs volunteers? Even though we are in a
remote area compared to Mass. locations I would still like to help
out if possible. And yes, if there are promos out there I would
like to get my hands on some.

    NEWS FLASH - D I G I T A L logo spotted at LIME ROCK PARK !!!!!!

Yes, that's right race fans, LIME ROCK, right in our own
backyard!! As part of the IMSA GTO / GTU race at LRP (Sept. 28-29)
two (2) F40 Ferrari's were on hand to battle the Roush Cougar's, Team
Nissan 300ZX's, Team Mazda's GTO RX-7's and more.

The Ferrari's paddock was swarming all weekend. And, right there, on the
side of the Ferrari RED transporter was the DIGITAL logo for all those
estatic Ferrari fans to see. The cars, the paddock, the transporter,
were all immaculately clean, I heard someone comment that even the dirt
in the Ferrari paddock was the cleanest!!!! It was quite difficult to
get a clear, clean look at the cars, as people were stacked up 15 deep
to try to get a closer look, but, at the end of the day, after the
crowds had departed, I did get a close up look at these F40's.

I got to talking to the folks on the Ferrari team (worker's whites are
a great advantage at times) and learned that the transporter is an old
truck from the F1 team, thus the Digital logo. That explained the
licence plates being from Modena. Also, the F40s carry the Digitec
data acquisition system developed by Magneti Marelli for the F1 cars.
Now if we could only get them to use some DEC gear as well....

Not Ferrari but still with F1. I have fixed problems at Leyton House
and williams over the past few months. Both fairly minor problems with
digital hardware But probably major to them. Leyton house was the most
interesting , They wanted to send cad information of some sort to a CNC
milling machine via a decserver from a vax. I beleive the information
being sent was to the mill basicly programmed the mill to cut car
    parts.
