| Bill, First you must decide
1) Dirt or asphalt
2) two cycle or four stroke
3) new or used
and HOW much money do you want or have to spend? There are many
questions but, I would say if you want to see whats its all about go to
New hampshire Bryar motorsports in Loudon. There are two events worth
seeing one I think is Aug 25/26th and the other is Sept. 29 and 30th
which is a national event and is worth seeing both at Bryar. See the
sprints (sit-up) or enduros (lay-down) karts. They also race at
riverside but, I don't have those dates. I hope this helps you and

| I used to race Karts in the southeast. I was a member of the World
Karting Association (WKA), who sanctions most of the races. There is
also some organized state racing, but no real membership is required.
WKA also issues the rules and giudelines and publish a monthly magazine
which is included in the membership fee. The magazine is very helpful
and informative and has all the racing schedules for the entire year.
Unfortunately, I don't have the address of WKA and have either sold and/or
given away everything having to do with karting since I now race cars
in the SCCA and could not afford both. The magazines and other stuff
went to some beginning karters. The used to be another organization
called the IKF, but I have no real information on it and it has been 7
years since I was active and alot has probaly changed.

As of right now, I plan on going to all 4 of the remaining events. I am
currently in 4th place in points. If I can pull off a 1 win, and 2
finishes better than a 4th, in the next 3 races, there will be a 4 way
tie for first going into the last event, Indy.

Let me know what number your kart is "if you pre entered" or what

I've race the sprinters and will attempt to do this next year
barring any MAJOR $ problems.

John is probably the best enduro karting hot-shoe in DEC. I've been
trying to get into karting for the past three years but, one thing or
another always comes up. John has a wealth of knowledge that I will
need to tap into when I campaign an enduro kart in '91.
I will be @ the Sept 28 - 30 race being held @ NHIS. Hope to hook up
with John to crew for him. Drop a line in this conference if you're
coming down for the race. Always a pleasure to meet and talk with
people who are in karting.
The only thing that bothers me for the '91 karting season at NHIS is
the future of New Hampshire Karting Association . While I was there for
racing last weekend, there were alot of rumblings about people getting
out of karting due to the cost increase. For example, "one" person
racing "one" kart in "one class adds up to this....
Friday practice session ... $40
Friday pit pass ... $10
Sat. or Sun. class fee ... $40
Sat. or Sun. pt pass ... $10
---------------------------------
Weekend Fees $100
Add provisions for new tires, fuel, food, transportation
to and from the track, pit passes for additional "family"
members, etc...... You can see how quickly things can
add up. Luckily, these guys (and gals) race once a month.

| Well John I will be there on that weekend of the nationals. Guess I'd
better talk with some of the local NHIS racers to see what the future
will be but, if I recall when I raced there the same stuff was
happening. I plan on racing the sprint class again as of next year
and will be doing my preseason scouting of what engines,pipes and
other items work and don't. It already looks like 2 bills just to
freshen up the engines, tires and bodywork oh well miss it to much
to not get the others karters a run for their money... Let me know
where you guys will be or what the kart looks like.

| So you wanna race said the dealer... Yep I said to him I wanna start
racing again. A grin came upon his face and said to me so what do you
need Randy "I was already on a first name basis with him I GUESS". Well
I need ................... No problem heres the bill $$$$$$$ well
maybe I could go without some of the stuff at first.
I couldn't believe that the small 100cc piston port engines were
selling around $800.00 and $200.00 plus parts to blueprint. OUCH!
I guess being out of racing karts for two years prices still go up.
Well John or Jim or anyone that could HELP me on this question I'd
be gratefull. What engine in that class "piston port" is kicking butt
is it the tkm,dap,pcr or the komet? I have a tkm and would just buy a
second one so when at nationals I'd have a backup. Well people any
thoughts out there..

Shows how long I have been out of racing. When I was racing the Yamaha
was by far the dominant engine in the piston port classes and you could
buy one for about $300. Blueprinting cost about $200, but in those
days there was little you could do -- Align bore, straighten the deck,
remove casting flaws/burrs from the passages. Any machining on the
ports was strictly a no-no. Of course it was legal to machine the
ports in the rotary valve and reed valve classes as long as the ports
fell within the tolerances of the tech manual.

| Well Bob to answer your question, the yamaha is still doing fine. There
are classes setup just for yamahas and even add advantages given this
engine. I think companies are jumping in with piston port engines
because the money is good for what you produce. Also still can't change
or touch the ports just match and fine tune everything. Over the last
couple days I've talked with four of the major two cycle engine
builders and here's a quick cut of their thoughts.
pcr piston port = No one really liked this engine for enduro racing
just circle tracks. A engine plus blueprint $650.00
brand new. If anyone is intrested just send me a
and I'll tell you where.
tkm/komet piston port = Here it got intresting.. I even talked with
national kart news person "Kurt Paluzzi" to reason
these two engines. Komet is a high reving narrow
band engine that requires perfect setup or your
sucking wind. Made for tracks like Daytona ect.
The tkm has more mid range power doesn't require
you to burn the clutch out so often. A track like
summit point, NHIS are good for the tkm. The price
is around $1200. for the komet and $950. for the
tkm.
Dap piston port = Burn it for this type of racing
Yamaha piston port = Well if your a lite person at NHIS you get a
weight advantage if not there are a few engines
that will run well on tighter courses. Really a
spare if all else fails.
Don't talk price for this one..
This information was supplied for a sprint setup racer at enduro tracks
and not for short tracks or dirt. Anyone else have something to add I'm
listening guys. Remember this information really came from the engine
builders and others listed below..

| My money would go on the Yamaha, I run them all season with no need
for work unless you really get picky and change the rings each race.
We do 10 sprint races (about 60 miles per race) followed by a season
ending 2 hour enduro with 2 driver teams to finish off the old equipment.
I've used the same engine for 5 seasons with only a major rebuild
each winter.
Getting started again, you don't want to worry about your engine
blowing, all these other engines are super touchy and big bucks
to repair.
Enduro racing is not always the fastest that wins, first you have
to finish.
I've dealt with Deis engines and they work great.
To save bucks I would run the Yamaha out of the box while getting
the kart sorted.
The first re-build go for the full blue print. This way you just
don't throw that $200 plus parts into it and waste the good engine
on getting your set up and driving skills back up to snuff.
I think you will find the first season cheaper in the long run if
you choose Yamaha. The next year you'll know which Engine is the best.
you can always sell the Yamaha and buy the hot winner. By that time
you will know how to get the full potential from that equipment.

| Fred, Thanks for your two cents worth. Where are you racing and is
it in sprinters or the enduro class. The kart is sorted out from
the last time I've race it "I know there would/will be some minor
changes as is almost always the case". Since both my Tkm and Yamaha
are both blueprinted its just sending them to a engine builder (Lad
specialties right John) and haven new bearing installed. My problem
like most is when going to the nationals to race and wanting to run
upfront with the big boys, what engine will give me that chance??
I know that if the top guns ran a dap engine and were winning with
this engine the same driver will most likely run upfront with any
engine...
Talking with John F. from this note has help in picking that engine
to run with "Tkm". I've learned for a friend that we can use the komet
internals which cost about 20% less and get a good engine without
breaking the bank of Randy. As you can tell I love racing, missed it
for many years and now its time to run.........

| Good luck with your trip to the Nat's, I didn't realize you had
engines already.
I would love to come down and see you run but my travel budget will
be used up going to the World Sports Car race in Montreal September
21,22,23. I would like to say for sure next season.
I run on a sprint road course. We run strickly Yamaha, but I have
had experience with European 100 CC 2 stroke engine class in our
OKRA series ( I think they run the same class you run IKF rules).
Our FIA guys run them without a clutch, world championship style
The biggest change I think you will find is the new axle clutch
($1200) that the pro's are running may leave you flat out of the
corners, Our club has outlawed them, but I hear most places let
them run.
What kind of frame have you got ?
Do you run open tire rules or are you running limited compound ?

| Fred, The national races have an open tire rule "use what you want".
The biggest thing I can see a sprint endruo racer is purchasing an
axle clutch or run the standard horstman clutch. Since must tracks
won't let you run the axle clutch you spend around $650. for just
racing the national racers "I don't think I will".
Fred or anyone or reading this , if you never have seen a national
kart race just check it out sometime "the sprinters are heart attack
machines". At around 100mph with no protection other than a
suit,neckbrace,boots and helmet its gets hairy to say the least.
See some of yous at NHIS in two weeks and I can't wait.....

| Did not go. UPS "lost" or more correctly, failed to deliver my motor!!!
Get this. Sent from Chicago, 2 packages (motors), both 2nd Day Air,
left Thursday. Tuesday, only one package arrives. Okay, I can leave
Thursday. No package Wednesday or Thursday. UPS is "looking" for it.
Friday, which is now a little late to leave for Texas, I get a post
card in the mail.....and you have to think about this one....from UPS.
"Unable to deliver package. Insufficient address."
The idiots send me a post card with the SAME address that was on the
box!!! It seems that driver A deliverd Tuesday morning. Driver B, new
person, got lost.... which also means that I probaly lost the point
championship, which actually would have been tough to win. The current
point leader would have had to run very poorly. GET THIS... he dropped
out on the FIRST LAP!!!! ARRRGH!!!! I still have an outside chance.
Have to win Bryar and see what the point leader does there. Would
rather save my money for Daytona than go to Indy. That track is soooo
bumpy my contacts flutter a week after I race there!!!

| Hey, What happen here in this note? No talking no anything.... I guess
that I'll talk and hope theres karters still out there.
Well 1991 is just around the corner and I'll be hitting the race
tracks having some fun. Yes I bought a komet k-71 for the big tracks
and according to some engine builders this engine will do just fine on
the smaller tighter courses (will see). I also order almost all my new
equipment I think I will need for next year minus tires and belts....
Speaking of tires what do you think if some of us order together and
this could lower the price per set? This is just a thought but I think
if the order is large enough we could save $$ and isn't that whats its
almost all about.(huh, huh).. Well enough said hope all you karters
haven't taken the package.
p.s. it looks like my first race will be either april or march
depending on what tracks and dates they give (any idea).

| Some times in early December, the kart shops send out flyers for their
specials. Usually D.T. Racing and Comet. Usually we can call Grand
Products and get a quantity deal on Bridgestones, or, Russell and get a
deal on Dunlops. I may switch to 5's instead of the 6's that I have
now. Better compound selection in the 5's. The other problem is that
the World Championshps were just held about a month or 2 ago and
Bridgestone and Dunlop still have not sent a shipment to the US.
Burris sent me a complete set of 851's, their new compound, for "free".
They heat up in 1 lap, which is a big improvement. I think the Stone's
are stickier, but Stone's only last 3/4 of the race. I figure 2 races
on the fronts and 4 on the rears with the Burris tires.
Problem with the fronts though. They are 1 inch bigger (taller) than
all other brands. This really upsets the handling. Burris said that
they would change the mold to correct the size.
Went to Indy. Took my Van and a friends big trailer, put the shop and 3
karts in it. Did not plan on pushing it, get their Friday afternoon,
that would be fine. On 84 in NY, about 1/2 mile after the state prison,
fried an bearing on the trailer. Got off the next exit and parked it a
a gas station. The bearing carrier was hot for one hour after we took
it off. Took 5 hours to get new beraings, carrier, and repair. Had to
pick it up a little after that, got there at 4:00 AM Saturday.
Fog Saturday AM. One 10 minute practice session. Had the wrong gear on
the open, finished 10th. Got a 6th in 135, with NO practice...
Sunday. The kart and the brain was willing, but the body was not. Ran
4th for the first 5 laps, caught the leaders on lap 6, very much to my
surprise. Dismore (his home track) was really trying to pass a guy from
Ohio, who like mine, has a TKM. About lap 15 Dismore ran it too lean
and detonated the piston. About then, my arms and neck were DEAD! I
decided to stay behind the 2nd place guy until the last lap. However,
Bridgetstone gave me a front left of the WRONG compound. With 10 laps
left there was no more rubber, finished the last lap on cord....3rd.
Indy is soooo bumpy. It is a very demanding track without the bumps.
The 4th place guy dropped out on lap 30 from hand and arm cramps. He
could no longer shift.
So, Randy, going to Daytona? See the new Sportsman class? No side pods,
nose cone only, stock Yamaha, spec pipe....sure could be cheaper than
running an unlimited 150....That darn need for speed though...

| John, So what your saying is I should wait until winter sales start
appearing to purchase tires? I firgured five set of dunlops to start
and a friend of mine just bought my old sprint kart wanted several sets
to start next season we could get a deal. I've been looking for my
sprinter either sl3 or r2 types barring any big changes in tire
designs ( been talking with dt racing for tires).
Since I sold one of my karts I needed to start to update the other
sprinter I have (mxk phase 3). I talked with peter at mxk and in the
process of working a sponsorship with them (racing their sprinter at
nationals). I'll let you know how this turns out over the next several
weeks..
Well I purchased a new komet k-71 to run with my bt82. I firgured
that this would give me the flexiabilty at any track being able to take
which engine will/would perform better. Guess we'll see if this login
pans out or not.
So John how did you finish the season in your classes? See it doesn't
matter where you race the unexpected always gets your behind... Think
of this, if you raced at NHIS all season than you would be in shaped
for those demanding courses YUK YUK YUK... I don't know if I will be
traveling to Daytona only because we're talking the first two weeks in
December to go to Hawaii, But if I could find someone to travel down
with maybe I could pull this off? I'll let you know on this one as
plans firm up. John M. will be flying down with his wife for the week
and I'm sure you'll see him there. Well talk with you later and let me
know on what you think about this tire thing (since I don't get free
ones YET!!!).

Hi...
I'm the guy Randy Barcomb sold his frame too. I will be
experimenting this coming year to see if I enjoy the sport of Kart
racing. I will probably buy only a Yamaha motors this year as they
seem to be the less exotic of all of them. This will give me the
time to establish the driving skills and not have to worry as much
about the state of engine tune. Any helpful hints would be appreciated
to this newcomer.

| Found this note via cars_uk groups c note. I have a 100 national in the
uk, had all sorts of problems including work last season so racing was
down to the mininum. Had a big off during practice one week end during
the later part of the summer and that was that for a while. I'm considering
going to 210 national but as yet I haven't made any move in that
direction.

| Like too many weekends this year I'm working, thankfull no more after
this. I was reading my way through this note after I put the original
reply in an noticed the mention of not much protection for sprinters
and tyre (tire) selection. Well my big off served to highlite both.
Over here 100 national (100cc, no clutch , no gearbox ) sprint racing
has a massif choise of tyre 1 make. Previously Vega and bridgestone
were the 2 popular makes with the odd driver using dunlop or goodyear.
I had used Vega and was very happy with the grip they gave but the new
rules say you can use this wonderfull racing slick made by Cheng
Shin.Well if the name doesn't give much away it should be obvious to
most that they come from the far east . They are an extreemly hard
compound tyre I suspect with lots of nylon in it. The result is that
the tyre does not grip to well round corners, For me the compound is
too hard. That's my tyre choise, no choice.
The tyre is very unpredictable and lets go without warning. This
paticular weekend Was real chassis testing . I had made some changes
and more to the points had moulded a seat to my exact body shape using
polyurathane foam, like they use in group C and imsa. The new seat
gave superb feel , everything felt just right. To cut a long story
short I warmed things up , not too many on the track then it cleared. I
started to go for fast times . It felt superb, I was on a flyer, came
out of a v. fast bend, THE UNPREDICTABLE became reality. I hit a tyre wall
at god knows what speed, from this point I really don't know what happened.
The kart was upside down at one point , I landed dirty side down still
sitting in the Kart. I was very shaked,but ok. I suffered neck ,leg
and back injury including some nasty friction burns down 1 arm. All in
all I was more than just lucky , It could have been far worse, I walked
away from that and its something I don't wish to repeat.
I for 1 would never under estimate how dangerous it is and how
inportant good tyres are. As with Derek Mitchel's complaints about the
RACMSA in another note ,They are the folks resposible for the
abominable tyre I'm stuck with. AS if motorsport was not dangerous
enough they give one of the top non gearbox Karts classes the worst tyres
available with no other choice. I know there will be folk who would say
that it was my fault , driver error, but I would say that most
accidents ,spins etc you tend to know why it happened. To flip out 2/3
round a bend an still not be able to lay the blame to me suggests that
I unceremoniously found the limit of the tyre.
I have enjoyed reading the entries in this note , its nice to see what
happens somewhere else in the world of Karting and not through a
magazine. Hopfully next season will fair better and maybe I'll get into
210 national (210cc gearbox).

Anyone know where the best prices for Dunlop tires are? This seems
like the tire to have in the enduro sprint class.

| Almost ready for the circus at Daytona. Have to finish building my
unlimited. Have the manifold made for the 3rd carb., trying to fit the
linkage and air cleaner. Actually there are multiple kart events at
Daytona from December 26th to December 31. Road Racing at Daytona 3.86
mile road course. Asphalt sprinters at Jacksonvile. Dirt sprinters at
Memorial stadium in Daytona. Indoor sprinters at the Ocean center on
Sunday December 30 (these indoor guys are nuts). Last year the third
place guy drover OVER the top of the 2nd place guy, then proceded to do
the same to the first place guy, they D-QD him. Trade show on Friday
and Saturday. Last year over 2000 entries for the week, whick makes it
the world largets motor racing event (for participants, not fans).
I will watch the sprinters, but I hope what happened last year will not
happen again. That driver dying from an accicident on the straightaway
was unnecessary. 120 sprinters is too many. They were 10+ wide 10 rows
deep. Everyone was in the draft, until someone touched wheels.
Let you know what happened January 7th, we will spend one week in the
sun.

Amen to that. The racer was James Kolman, a long time friend of mine
when I used to live in Montana. He had graduated from Montana State
University and moved to Seattle where he was working form Boeing. He
was really getting into karting in the Seattle area and decided to take
a road trip to Daytona for the Christmas holidays.
I don't know all of the details of the accident, but it was extremely
hard on his younger brother who had accompanied him to act as pit man.
I guess they impounded all of their equipment, including the tow
vehicle, while they did their investigation. Andy was forced to fly
home and then come back later to get the equipment.
All in all a sad situation and one which I hope never occurs again.

| Back from Daytona 90. Entries were down this year for the enduros, from
1200 to about 800. All the classes were smaller. However, the sprint
asphalt entries at Jacksonville and the diggers at Memorial stadium were
way up. Doing it in the dirt in Florida, Georgia, N.C., S.C., Deleware,
Ohio and Penn is growing by leaps and bounds.
Daytona is Daytona, the world championships at THEY track, but there
are some things thaey have to change.
1. Entry fee. I can understand the $50 per class. But $20 pit pass per
person.... insurance for my 7 year old??? It was $250 just to get into
the track.
2. Daytona Officials. Some of the security guards are very helpful and
pleasant, others are just A_____es. It is bad enough that the schedule
is rediclious, track opens at 7:00, 7:15 drivers meeting, 7:30 practice
starts. Well the track may open at 7:00, but you may get to your pit by
7:30. The security guards that control the traffic, stop evry 5th or so
car and make you wait....why? Dig this, "We don't want too many moving
vehicles in the pits" (ie; I am on a power trip) Then at the end of
the day, your last race finishes at 5:00, they want you packed up and
out by 5:30, and are VERY nasty about it.
3. Length. They shortened the races this year to 45 minutes, which was
a surprise to everyone. Then because of fog and red flags, shortend the
races on Friday and Saturday to 30 minutes (Sunday races were 45
minutes) 30 minutes is not a world championship event.
We had less practice, shorter races, but still got done at 5:00??
Thursday practice went fine, ran my 100 open. The sprinters went off
without a hitch. I did not get a chance to watch them.
Friday there was an accicident in practice, combined with fog that got
practice started late. We only got about 5 laps each practice session,
2 sessions. Terrible. I had too little gear (no low, too much straitaway).
With only a 30 minute race, finished 13th. We were red flagged after one lap
(accicident # 2) for the weekend.
Saturday. Again fog, short practice. This was in prep for the 125 gearbox
race. I broke in the 150 for 3 laps, ran very quick, last 2 laps full
throttle but did not pull in the pipe. Saw 14200 RPM. Great. Took off 2
teeth in the rear, went out next session, pulled in the pipe and saw
14.4K RPM. VERY GREAT Red flag, did not get a time. Went out in the last
session, down the back straight, climbed to 14.2 and then slowly dropped to
13.2, ????? Thought something broke. Checked the carbs, piston etc
before the race. Could find nothing wrong. RACE: About 60 entries, 90%
were shifty's. I ran 4 sec's slower than last year, the leaders ran 1
sec FASTER than last year. Almost all the classes ran slower or equal
to last year, EXCEPT B. LTD and 125, (my classes), mostly due to the
number of new gear box entries. Finished 10th. First through 7th were
Rotax 128's, 8th was a B, Ltd, 9th a 125 and me, B. Ltd 10th. Leaders
ran 2:07's.
Sunday. Changed the reed box to stiffer reeds. (Should of put the
older/other motor on!!!) The motor would run 13.85, not bad, but my
best was 2:16's....??? Ran 2:18 in practice, took off 3 teeth, 2:17,
added 3 teeth, 2:17....real starnge. Either I have a bad wheel bearing
or axle bearing, piston or ring problem, or a crank or crank problem.
Last time this happened, the crank twisted out of square.
RACE: There were about 60 entries, same guys as 125 gearbox. Only 2 battles
during the race. 1 + 2nd, and 9th-12th. Unfortunately I was in the
9th-12th battle, everyone else was running alone, unusual. The learders
ran very consistent 2:04's and 2:05's. Lazarro led, Bootes (125 winner)
drafted 1 inch behind. Last lap, last turn, Bootes drafts inside, and
into the turn, Lazarro stays outside, side by side through the jog,
Lazarro ahead by a foot, through 3rd gear into 4th, Bootes wins by less
than a foot.
I had a good time with 3 other guys. We would pass each other 10 times
a lap. I shook the group on the last lap, finished 9th. Again, only 2
B. Ltd's in the top 10. TKM 150 in 5th and a TKM 150 in 9th. I got down
to 2:16's, but last years 2:12s were better.
There were 2 REAL dumb accicidents this year, on the STRAIGHT!!! They
were both a case of someone drafting on the low side of the track and
running into the back of someone a 100mph+. One was in practice. Chuck
Hevenor from Conn was hurt. He run at Bryar... The other guy got a
broken vertebrate. The other strait accident was in Yamaha Medium, 1/2
lap into the race. The guy got a concussion. Two accicidents in 100cc
Open, the first was a driver thinking he could take off and lead the
first lap, thus NOT lifting at the end of the straight, thus, 3 broken
vertebrate....The second was strange, the clevis pin on the brake pedal
either broke or fell out. He is okay, but got 2 broken ribs. Those were
the only accicidents, but left 3 guys in the hospital. Again, there was
talk about roll cages on karts. Which may not be bad, but NOT the
abomination that WKA had some chasis manufacture build. It must be 32
inches to 40 inches HIGH!!!
The NHKA sent out the notification and ticket bulletin. It will be held
at the Holiday Inn in Tewksburry. HOWEVER, they forgot to but a DATE on
when the banquet/rules meeting is. (smile) I will check on this.

The maximum speed i get from this is about 180 Km/h (if the straight
is long enough).
Im interrested to have contacts in karting and new idea's, race
date's and places in Europe.
If you start with karting (i am 45 years) you are catched by a virus
and go every weekend for a drive/race.

| Received my November issue of WKA, (World Karting Association)
magazine. A couple of interesting items.
First, WKA will be moving its headquarters from Canton, Ohio to
Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Second, CMS will be modifying the road course, and adding a sprint
course for the karts. (Not sure if it asphalt or dirt) Rockingham
currently holds both road race and short track asphalt sprint events,
and I think CMS will do the same.
Third, WKA has dropped Pocono of the National Points circuit. That was
expected. Just to dangerous because it was too rough. However, they
ADDED Penn. Int. Speedway, Rogers place. I did not know there was a
race course there?????? Does anyone know the length? layout?
Fourth, at the World Enduro championships (held again at Daytona) we
will be using the backstretch chicane to slow the karts down. They have
widened and lenghtened the chicane to make it "less dangerous" ????
FYI, the "Kart Week" starts the day after Christmas. 5 days of Enduro
racing at Daytona Speedway. 4 days of asphalt sprint racing at
Jacksonville. 3 days of under the lights dirt racing at Municipal
Stadium. Final night, indoor racing at the Bayside Civic Center.
(Where, if you can't go around em, you drive over them....and they
do...!!!)

| I am also interested in that motor. Is it a rotary valve or reed motor?
If you can get the model number, I can get in contact with Yamaha of
America. Yamaha usually sells their motors/parts for a lot less than
most of the manufactures. Be nice to be able to buy a 125 for less than
the $4K Rotax or $3.7K TKM.
This year they are having gear box motors for sprint classes. I think 2
classes, one for 125 reed (less bucks), the other for 125's that cost
more.

| The first race in 1992.
My son Jacco and i had our first race in 1992 on sunday 22-march.
After 3 run, each of 20 minutes, the following results are achived:
Jacco ended as 14 th, and i was only on the 30 th spot.
On the 5 th of april is our next race.
Besides tuning of the engines we use also some products to provide
a better performance.
We treated the engines with Slick 50 , active ptfe (teflon), and this
gives a temp. fall of approx. 10 degrees C, and a power increase of
approx. 4 %. Also a new oil from AGIP is on the market in Europe
called SP7196 which is design to be the best for racing engines.
With these products the engines, Yamaha and KTM, running over 30 hours
without problems.
If you like to know if these products are on your local market, please
send me a mail and i will inform you.

50 have on wet clutches ? I use motul Synthetic or golden spectrol in
My FZR Yamaha (Supersport Spec) and don't have any problems. I would
think that the Slick 50 would cause a wet clucth to slip.
I also would like to hear more about the 4% increase in power.

| Sorry for the confusion, My Yamaha is a 4 stroke, and I run Motul
Synthetic Oil for three hour endurance races as well as sprint races.
My question was about the stated 4% increase of power when using Slick
50 with teflon when added to the oil. A 4% increase in HP for me is a
*HUGE* gain nby just pouring something into the crankcase, that is why
I wanted to know if you had dyno tested your motor with before and
after the slick 50 was added. Or maybe slick 50 profides these charts ?

| Slick 50 claims to increase power by reducing the friction in the
engine. Quite what the real % increase is I pass. However there was
some discussion on the subject of engine additives in cars_UK some time
ago, to the extent that there was another additive that was better than
slick 50 . Sorry But I pass on the title, if I find it I'll post it
here.
There is a 2 stroke version on slick 50 if anyone is intrested.

| Hi,
We used the 2 stroke Slick 50 treatment. The procedure is that
the cold engine is started and the Slick 50 is put into the
air inlet of the carburater. After approx. 10-15 min. the Teflon
is sitting on all metal parts and is reducing the friction.
Reports and test provided from the UK proved the quality.
In the test 2 engines of the same type are used. Before treatment
these engine are tested on power and temp.
After that 1 engine is treated with Slick 50 and the same test is
made again. The treated engine has a temp. fall on the cilinder of 10
degrees C and produced 3.54% more power.
The engine parts have a longer life also. Our Yamaha did 40 hours
running time without changes made to any part.
It is NOT an additve but a real treatment of all moving parts.
It is only needed ones in a livetime of the engine.(till new parts
are added to the engine)
We are very happy with it and it proves to be effective.
It is useble in gearboxes and clutches also if the parts of the clutch
are metal and non-metal material. We do not use this till now.
Just give it a try if you not beleive all storeis. A tryout will only
cost a little.

I have no connection with either the company or the product, but
was impressed by the demonstration and the talk given by the rep.
The rep concerned was J.H.A. Wyllie (I have his business card).
To recap, this 'treatment' forms a single monecular layer, bonded
to the surface of the components (gears or engines). This occurs
wherever heat is generated (where the friction is). It was stated
that this product should *not* be added to a gearbox which has
synchro, since it is [claimed to be] so slippery that the synchro
cones would no longer work...
Tell you what, I'm not in the mood to phone this company, but I'll
drop them a line asking for details. I'll also ask if they can
provide any info on the availabiliy of this product in the USA.

| I would be interested in Dyno charts, The way I figure is, that if the
stuff is so good and you get a 4% increase in power, all the guys at
the racetrack would use it. So far I don't see anyone pouring it into
their motors and winning races because of it.
A 4% increase in power by pouring something into an oil inlet is HUGE.
Tuners would kill for something like that, Guys in the supersport
racing in my class pay 500 bucks for a 5 angle valve job and maybe see
a 1.5%-2% increase.
I remain Skeptical until proven otherwise.

| The race on the 5 the of april went very well.
My son was 9 th after 3 races and i was 14 th overall.
It was a sunny day and that makes it nice to race with all
the other friends.
After the races i was exam. the karts and my chassis was broken
near the bearing next to the motor. So its in repear now.
Our next event is the Dutch championship on 2 and 3 may.
Everything will be prepeared by then and with a competition of
80 other drivers our goal is to be in the finals and become
then in the 20 the place.
I will write a report then.
About the PFTE material, Next week i will give details of reports
from tests made by verious institutions like the german "TUF".
Also reports from Susuki and other motor manufacturers will be
described. I hope this will be sufficient to make a choise.

That seems to be the favorite breaking spot here in the states also.
We end up putting a 2" to 3" gussett, from the frame rail to the bearing
hanger. (Full triangle piece) . Problem is, the motor mount is on that
side, and some moutns butt up againstthe hanger. But if you have the room,
any piece of gussett that you can fit helps.

Fred Clarke, 42, of Chesapeake, Va., became the first driver fatality at
New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon, N.H., when he died Sunday
from injuries sustained in an accident Saturday in an amateur go-kart
event.
Although there were no visible marks or scratches on his helmet, Clarke was
knocked unconscious when he was ejected from his Enduro-Kart after it spun
out and struck a retaining wall on the road course at NHIS.
Track emergency medical technicians transported Clarke to Concord Hospital,
where, according to Dr. Merwyn Bagan, the driver died of multiple skull
fractures and multiple brain contusions trauma.
"Obviously, it's a terrible thing, and all of us at the speedway are
saddened that it happened," said Gary Bahre, NHIS president.
Clarke's go-kart - which was traveling about 80 miles per hour - suffered
a steering and braking malfunction as it approached a hairpin in Turn 6.
Bahre said that several eyewitnesses indicated Clarke's go-kart, which was
not equipped with seat belts, spun twice as it approached the 90-degree
hairpin and ran off course.
"He was lying supine and his head was flexed so it was looking over the
steering wheel," Bagan said. "When the car rear-ended into the wall, the
rear of the car collapsed and he was ejected."

I was at NHIS as a spectator Saturday. I suspect the accident happened
after I left at about 4:30, as I hadn't heard of any serious incidents
while I was there.

That is sure a sad thing to hear, but I have to wonder about the crash
Helmet. I have too had a serious accident in a kart under not to
dissimular conditions where the Kart overturned. My crash Helmet was
visably damaged, paint scratched that sort thing, I sure had multiple
injuries, thankfully non serious. I too have seen some real nasties,
but never heard of anything like that.
Would there be an inquiry for that sort of thing???? I would be
intrested if there is for no other reason than why the helmet failed.
There a very few cases where helmet don't do thier job, snell was set
up as a result of one and I think some time in that past someone was
killed wearing a simpson helmet that failed.

| This type of injury has happened before. Specifically I remember Don Pratt,
the modifed driver, being killed in this way. The violence of the accident
causes the brain to move inside the skull and even though there is no
damage to the helmet the driver still suffers serious brain injury or
death :*( . I don't think anyone has found a solution to this other than
allowing the vehicle to adsorb the impact so as to not allow a brain jarring
stop. In modifieds this would be to allow the front or rear to crumple ala
Indy cars (don't know if this is allowed yet, modifieds used to be very rigid)
but for karts there really isn't any vehicle to absorb the impact.

If it happened in turn 6 then I wonder if the brakes were working. The
wall is a good 20-30 feet from the edge of the track in that section,
with ample runoff. Most crashes I have seen at that spot have slowed,
due to the runoff and almost never make the wall.

| For those of you folks who know NHIS, would you consider Turn 6 a
"hairpin" as reported in the Globe? I don't think so. I actually
believe, and from some other verbal sources have heard, that he
actually hit in Turn 3 (the real "hairpin" for SSCA anyway).
This might make sense, especially if they were
using the Southern Ss, and counting each turn in the Ss you could
conceivably wind up with Turn 3 being Turn 6. Just food for thought.
Also, the brain injury sounds similar to what they listed as causes of
death for Jovy Marcelo and (perhaps) Clifford Allison,

I would call turn 6 at NHIS a hairpin. For those of you who don't know
it, it's a banked (~35' give or take a few ') that requires alot of
entrance speed to get out of it quickly. It's gives kind of a slingshot
effect when you nail it just right. (At least it feels that way to me)
As you come out of turn 3, it's full throttle untilyou reach your braking
markers. This is where The problem would arise, if he lost his brakes
in that spot (Set up to the right to square off the turn) he would be
heading directly for the retaining wall. If no speed was scrubbed off
in the runoff area's the potential for disater is greatly increased.If
it was 6 then I could see how a fatality could occur. I on't know much
about Kart racing, but With bikes I'm wide open in 3rd gear, and it's
not slow.
As far as comparing the injury to a boxers, No boxer in the world hits
that hard. He obviously had a severe head trama, and boxers take head
shots of a much lesser foeces. I think it's an unfair comparison.
(Apples + oranges).
I'll know more about it as I'm up there this weekend for our last
regional ever. I'll speak with Ted Goddard (he's the track manager and
he's has reliable information.

| The facts;
THE TURN;
I do not know the numbering scheme, because there are different course
configurations, but they were running the S's . But it is the turn that Mike
Saia described. Running counter clockwise, down the pit straight towards turn
1, a left into the S's, out of the S's, down the back straight. Brings you to
the 90~, right hander that goes up the hill, and then the continued 90~
(total 180) to the crest. (Remember this "crest" part) Down the hill to
the 180~, banked, left turn, monza. This is where the accident happened.
WHAT HAPPENED;
As the driver came to the top of the crest, there was a slower car (kart,
but we call them cars..) from another class in front of him, in the line to
the right. Going down the hill towards the monza, the driver made a pass to
the LEFT of the slower kart. This put him on the wrong side of the track
for a proper set up to the monza turn. The car looped twice and backed out
of the turn, hitting the concrete (Jersey) barrier with the left rear at
almost a 90~ angle to the barrier. Now, an explanation of enduro karts. Our
head rests are about 12" from the rear bumper. Hitting a barrier, and
partially sliding out of the car has happened before, 2 years ago, Daytona,
same results. He did not catapult out of the kart. He did hit the barrier.
There were no tires or hay bales if front of the barrier.
He sustained multiple skull fractures.
HOW FAST:
This was the last WKA National Points Race for the season. There were
drivers from around the country that are not familiar with NHIS. In fact
there are only 2 drivers that attend that track regularly, that run the
125cc/B. Ltd class, that are local, myself and Ken Deutsch from Cambridge.
From experience, we both know, that our cars are a great deal faster
(fastest) than any other class there. The first time either one of us passed
on the left, we found out that because of the down hill before the monza, we
get tremendous acceleration. How much? When I can look, and I can only
glance, the electronic display flashes, 14,000 RPM, and climbing. Well, 14,100
is exactly 107 mph. We turn the track, using both S's, at 1:14, consistently.
EQUIPMENT FAILURE;
He did make a pit stop. Only one, and why we are not sure. I personally go
through a set of brake pads PER RACE at NHIS. Brake fade is not uncommon.
Observers did not see any brake smoke or wheel lock up before he looped it
twice. This could be from brake failure, or, brake fade, or, he had the bias
set for both front and rear to NOT lock. There is a difference of opinion on
if the helmet had damage.
THE PRESS;
I was surprised to see what was released by Ted and Bahre. Supposedly the
Lawrence Eagle and the Globe will be publishing a correction. However, no
tires and no hay bales, is not a "safe" condition.
I am now putting the finishing touches on a 7 page letter to WKA, and to
start a separate letter to NHIS.

I was at the track this past weekend for the final LRRS event. (I Blew
my motor in practice and my new bike was supposed to arrive, did'nt.
A basic washout of a weekend.)
I stopped by and talked to Ted Goddard the track manager. He was
still a little bewildered about the fatality as was the Chief Tech
inspector Gill. Like .76 said he set up on the inside of turn 6 to pass
a slower driver and this is not the line to take. Gill was the 1st
person on the scene and there is/was some discrepancy as to what
happened. Spectators in the turn said he spun twice, the driver that he
passed said he did not spin, and the tire marks in the turn don't tell
anything.
In any event, the driver did not hit the wall, his cart did, but he
did not. Word that I got was he was ejected from it, before any contact
was made. There was some type of brake malfunction and the steering
wheel linkage was broken, along with the carb linkage and brake
linkage. when everything was reassembled, it worked. The do suspect
some type of brake failure. He was wearing a Simpson helmet, without
any marks to the exterior of the helmet. Gill told me the inside was
wasted, and it looked like a decompression accident. (His head took the
force of comming to a stop.) Also on this particular Kart, the U shaped
head brace was reinforced to the frame, without any 'Give'.

| Race this weekend at Bryar, oops NHIS. It is a WKA National Points Race. So
after a almost 2 year vacation, I luck into a shifty ride. The kart
manufacture of the "Roadrunner" chasis, asked me to help him set up his
shifty at the last race at NHIS. The next day he offered me a ride in a new
machine for the next two WKA races, NHIA and Atlanta. I arrived 2:00am last
Friday in upstate NY, 7+ hours to pick up the machine. Much to my surprise,
there it was, still in the jig. Worked till 11:00pm Friday night, loaded up
the yet to be finished machine and headed home. Talk about NEW.!!! The
shifty class is becoming popular, so parts manufactures give freebies to the
chasis manufactures. This is a new chasis, with (freebie) new brake system,
one that I can adjust biasis with a little knob, yet to be mounted. New
motor, a CZ/JAWA 125. This has to be sorted out. 2 new carbs, Mikuni and a
Delorto. And a new pipe.
I received the motor, gear set, carbs, jets yesterday. Waiting for the pipe
and tires. Besides setting this up to make a lap, the CZ is a 28HP motor
that costs $1000, not bad, running against the 128GP Rotax at 38hp at $5000,
that is bad. First we get it to run, then handle, then go faster, and then
see if we are close to the Rotax. Will try to make it a fun weekend.
WKA accepted my proposal for a "spec type" shifty motor. I proposed the
Rotax 250, rotary valve, water cooled $1300 motor. Should go a season or
TWO! before it needs a rebuild. Awsome power and cheap. They accepted that,
but also approved the 1992 model, 250 Rotax, reed valve, cost $2200. I am
not too thrilled about that. The rotary model is cheaper because it was
designed and built in 1972.....
Plan to keep the dirty side down and have fun and tell about it on Monday.
Practice Friday, 12:00 to 5:00
Race on Saturday, 125 gearbox and Sunday in B. Ltd.

First, re; 124.83
They have corner workers. Crazy bunch to listen to over the radios. Very
professional bunch, know they job well. I don't know if they are track
supplied or part of the SCCA workers. Have white uniforms with NHIS patches.
Okay, Race Report
Not much of a race report, more of a test report.
When I started this "project", I tried to keep my expectations in some
realistic realm. New chassis, new design brake system, new motor that has
never been tested and a carb system and pipe combo to be sorted out. My goal
was to sort this new machine out for the chassis builder who hopes to produce
this as a turn key, entry level, race ready shifter, for about $3500. Not bad
considering a Rotax engine alone is $4600, $5600 for the computerized
version, complete kart and Rotax about $10K.
Planned to be at practice on Friday. However the motor did not arrive until
Wednesday. Took Thursday afternoon off, with the help of a friend, Norm
Donnelly, and set up the motor and the brake bias system. Thursday evening,
and the "special pipe" never shows up. We have to spend Friday making a
special header and adapting a pipe designed for another engine to the new
one. (later on we realize that we needed this missed practice session.)
Saturday. WKA National points race. Very surprised on the large turn out.
Especially the B-Stock (2 100cc engines) class. With the large number of
entries, they decided to break up the practice sessions into classes, which
gives us only 2 sessions. The owner/chassis builder brought another identical
set up. They were having a terrible time at Friday practice keeping the motor
running, so we went to Delorto, put the Mikuni aside.
First session, fired up pretty good, (had to push start). I was surprised how
easy we got off the line. Usually you have to slip the clutch a bunch. (First
hint of set up problems). Motor ran ran clean. I thought with a .200 jet we
would be real rich, wanted it that way to break in the motor. (Second hint of
a set up problem.) So the first lap I cooled it, got on it a bit more the
second lap. Noticed that he engine was REAL strong at 8K rpm to 11.5. (Third
hint....) Third lap, got with it. Kept an eye on the head temp. Would jump 30
degrees as I went through the gears. Went up to 290. A little high for break
in. Came down the hill at a good clip, toward the straight, took the right
hander....and....the kart got a real good side bite and then hopped 10 feet
to the left. Missed the tire wall by about 6 inches. Pit time....
Had a talk with the chassis builder. Made some chassis changes and some big
time tire pressure changes. Went out for the second practice. You fly through
the gears, about 2 secs in 2nd, same for third, same for forth, a little
longer for 5th and 6th. At 11.5K rpm, the power would drop off and then would
sputter at 12K. Great, I thought too rich, will have to make a jet change to
get it to rev to 13.5K. Stayed out for 2 more laps, wanted to get some time
on the motor and this was the last practice session. Was frustrating, get
into sixth gear, and the motor would sputter. All of a sudden coming down the
hill, toward the back straight, the motor starts to seize, (stick as we call
it). The clutch handle is in an awkward position, could not get to it quickly
enough, locked the wheels and almost put it into the same tire wall. We only
use the clutch in the pits, or when you need to stop. All gear changes are
done with a blip of the throttle, no clutch.
Back in the pits, found a .182 jet in the carb!!! Never trust the
manufacture, always check it yourself... On the other hand, it was rich on
the top end, but it stuck??? confused. The owner wanted me to put in a new
cylinder and piston. I decided that until we found out what was wrong, I
would clean up this one. Put in a .195 jet. Went out for the race. With a
.195 jet it was way too rich. On the 3rd lap, I was running third, but was
real unhappy with the performance. Pulled into the pits. Put a .190 jet in.
Well, I learned a lesson about Delorto, bowl type carbs. Make sure the bowl
is completely filled with fuel before taking off. Died out a lap latter, no
fuel. Could of finished 3rd, but that was not what we were there for.
Saturday night, did some real heavy thinking. Saturday morning, decided to
stick in an exhaust temp. probe, and go to a LEANER jet. After the rain, we
got on the track. Just as I thought, as I went through the gears, the exhaust
temp went to 1300 degrees, way too hot. This is why the motor stuck. Saturday
night I was thinking, this motor, CZ/Jawa was designed for motocross.
Motocross bikes rev between 8 and 12K MAX, and do not run 13.5 rpm down 1
mile straights. On a 2 stroke, tuned exhaust length is critical and is done
in 1/16th inch increments. I added 1 inch to the header, went one lap, was
better. Added another, went one lap, was better, added another inch. Went
from 7 inches to 11 inches of header before it was right, 950 to 1020 was the
exhaust temp. Now we are about 3rd fastest. Went to a .182 jet and went out
and hammered. I realized that I could run most of the track between 5 and 6th
gear....I was in 6th before I hit the straight...was out of gear... Practice
ended, decided to go from a 20 to a 19 rear gear, better, but not enough. At
the end of practice we were about 2nd fastest. Never got to find out what we
could of done, the rains came and ended our day.
We learned a lot. First, the motor revs only between 8 and 12K, at 11.5 power
drops WAY off. A real puller of a motor though. Second, we have to get a pipe
to match the engine's power band. Third, a 39mm carb is too big, will
probably go to a 36mm. In all, we accomplished a lot. Quite a few people were
VERY interested. Motor, carb and pipe will list at $900 and run a full season
before a rebuild is needed.
The owner wants me now to take it to Atlanta and finish testing it there.
October 21. We need to get a new gear set for the gear box though. We shall
see what is available.

I have a nephew that races all over New England,even a few
events at NHIS. He lives in Merimack NH. He does real well for his age,
wins alot,even has a few championships. He gets all of his karts,parts
components,fuel,engines,tires,etc.from a guy that is located in Hollis
NH. The guys name is(if i can spell it right)Archie Archambault. I,m
not sure what his buisness name is,Archies Karts maybe. I,ve been to
his place once with my brother in law,and this guy has EVERYTHING to
do with karts. He even has a dyno for the engines he builds.

I really suggest that you see both Enduro and Sprint racing. They are really

idea of what you would like.

I've been watching the races a lot on ESPN�. I do know that
I don't want to race on dirt. I just got out of motocross
so I want to go to asphalt. I would like to start off with
the 2-stroke non-shift class.
