106.52Devilbis vs. ...NYOSS1::DILLARDHappiness is a 1300 with one end to go.Fri May 09 1997 13:0414
I would like opinions on Devilbis vs. Campbell-Hausfield compressors.
My local Price Club has a Devilbis 5HP, 30Gal. compressor for $267 and
while interested, I know nothing about compressors.

Also why is it that some of the smaller, "professional" models (e.g
Makita) are seemingly so expensive relative to the specs. (SCFM,
    HP...)?

I've read this and the other compressor related strings and still have
    the question.

    Thanks,

I'm not sure you can generalize just by brand name. There are
lots of details, including plenty you can't see, that go into
quality. In general (my opinions only - nobody else would want
    them):

An oil-lubricated compressor is going to last longer than
    an oilless.

Cast iron cylinders are better than aluminum.

    The horsepower ratings on compressor motors are totally bogus;
go by watts (volts x amps), although some good compressors have
more efficient motors than cheaper compressors and you can't
    strictly compare 1-1.

Sometimes smaller is better. A "smallish" contractor does not want to lug
around a 30 gallon compressor when he can use a pancake or one of those
twin tank models. Esp if they are gas powered. When I'm "on the road"
I'll load up the 30 gallon Sears model I have ONLY when the job calls for
more than just a few nails (or when a framing or finish nailer will simply do
a better job (for example toeing in 2x4s)).

Do you need a portable compressor, or can you handle a stationary one in your
garage or shop? Getting a larger tank (60 gal) is good if you can.

A rule of thumb is around $100/hp so under $300 for a 5hp compressor sounds
*real* good, but what are the specs? What will you be using this compressor
for? If you'll be doing sanding or sandblasting, get a bigger tank. Check the
CFM ratings on your tools and see how thay compare to the compressor.

Price Club also has a large, VERY stationary compressor with 60 gal
tank. I need to be able to move the compressor around so that one is
out. I plan on using it primarily for nailers but am interested in
other air tools as well. Just no plans yet for those.

Re. small compressors - I can see the portability issue but was curious
about the large price differentials. Is this a case where smaller
    cost's more as in miniaturization?

Why do the oil lubricated compressors last longer?

From the comments here it seems that this compressor is a good deal.
I don't know if it will fit in my Acura however :-)
