1759.0. "TREK 1400 frame and rim cracks!" by CSSE32::SMITH (Reality, just a visible imagination?) Wed Oct 10 1990 11:45

    Before a long ride this last weekend I gave my bike the once over.
    While cleaning the frame I noticed a crack in the seat tube. Since
    this is a TREK aluminum with internal lugs the crack appears where the
    outer surface of the top lug mets the seat tube. eg:

    		     Top Tube		    /    /

                         Top Tube           /    /
                    -----------------------'    /
                                               /
                                              /
                    -------------------,     /
    		Crack appears          /    /
                here ------------->   /__  /
                                     /    / Seat Tube
                                    /    /

    I think the crack is just in the paint, BUT if the paint cracked the
    joint must have moved, right? I believe TREK has a warranty on the
    frame so I plan to discuss the problem with the dealer first. Any
    opinons on the seriousness of such a crack? Should I request a
    replacement frame?

    Now the story gets worse! As I go over the wheels, touching up the
    trueness I find a crack on my rear Matrix rim around one eyelet,
    extending from the eyelet on both sides for about half the width of the
    rim. Now I've never abused my bike and the rim has no dents, bumps,
    etc. The wheel trues fine. Does TREK warranty there rims?

    The bike is a 1990 TREK 1400 I bought this spring from the Cycle Loft
    in Burlington.

    Thanks for an suggestions, recommendations,

Hmmm, I'll have to check out the wheels and frame on my 1400 before I ride it
today. I've never thought to inspect it for cracks before. Keep us posted on
what happens with this.

1759.2Frame should be coveredBAGELS::GOTANTASWed Oct 10 1990 16:528
    I believe that the frame and the wheels are covered under warranty
    for defects in material or workmanship. I'll have to check my 1400
    thoroughly before (if) I ride this weekend. How long have you had the
    bike? How many miles on it?
    Let us know what the dealer says/does about this.

1759.3How old is the frame?BANZAI::FISHERstill dis-tneiro-edThu Oct 11 1990 08:527
    I had a crack in an MA40 rim. The crack was a cm long, an mm wide and
    on one of the sides (brake pad surface) near a spoke, of course. I
    couldn't remember how old the rim was or anything so I didn't bother
    to argue for "defective materials" Just coughed up more bucks for
    a rebuild that I should have done mydelf.

1759.4Calling the Dealer today.CSSE32::SMITHReality, just a visible imagination?Thu Oct 11 1990 10:3611
I plan to call the dealer today. I checked my owners manual last night and it
says the frame is warrantied for life and all other parts for 1 year. I bought
the bike new this last spring so everything should be covered. I let you know
what they say.

PS: Since I didn't want to miss my ride last weekend I did ride the bike
(100 mi) with the cracked rim and frame. Stupid maybe but if the bike will just
hold out a few more weeks while the weather is still rideable I'll be happy.
1759.5And the Dealer say's...CSSE32::SMITHReality, just a visible imagination?Thu Oct 11 1990 11:397
I called them today and they confirmed and defects would be covered by warranty.
They asked me to bring the bike in so they could have a look at it. I hate to
lose the use of my bike for the rest of the season so I may hold off a few more
weeks. I probably been riding it with the cracks for a while now anyway.

re .2 The bike is only 6 months old and has 1800 mi on it.
1759.6Push for a new frameBAGELS::GOTANTASThu Oct 11 1990 14:338
    If the crack in the frame isn't that "serious", in your opinion, then
    keep riding the bike. When you do bring it in to the dealer, tell 'em
    that you want a new frame. I doubt that they (dealer) would be able to
    fix it anyways...
    Good luck and safe riding to you!

    I've heard that alot of people have been having trouble with cracks in
    Trek aluminum frames. Has anyone else heard this? One guy told me
    that everyone on his racing team bought Trek 2000 frames and they ALL
    cracked.

    	Well, I have a small crack in the paint on the seat tube
    	of my 1400.

    	I'm going to call Gamache's tomorrow and see what the
    	next step is.

    	I assume that a crack in the paint means some movement
    	where the lug and tube meet.

    	MATT,

    	I think the point is: If the paint cracks the seam
    	must be moving/flexing/whatever.

    	The crack on my seat tube is a perfect line going partially
    	around the seat tube.

    	After I call Gamache's, I'm gonna call TREK.

    	I just talked to Paul at Gamache's. He said that the
    	warranty is very straightforward. If the frame fails,
    	TREK will replace it, anytime.

    	So, basically, I'm gonna keep an eye on it. It it gets
    	worse (by my definition), I'll take it in. Paul said
    	there would be no problem with them or with TREK.

Hey I meant to say that.

I have a TREK 1100 and after when I tried to put the rear rack on
it a lug broke off. I was soooooo steamed that I took the whole bike
there within a couple of minutes and similarly the dealer had no
hesitation about replacing the entire frame at like $0.00 to me.
I didn't get it done because I didn't want to give up perfectly good
riding time but when I finally wanted the frame swapped it was done
within a week. I am and was favorably impressed with TREK's service
policy.

Now the dealer. They did such a terriable job at adjustments I couldn't
believe any professional or amature bike mechanic would have called it
complete! Just a for instance...The chain was almost dragging on the
ground, the rear brake was rubbing hard against the wheel. I worked on
the bike for a week figuring all these ajustments and vowed never to
have that place touch my bike again. I know its wrong, the correct
course is to whine to the manager and point out everything they did
wrong and help them turn it around but this is my bike. It would be like
having my children operated on by a doctor who I knew to be a quack.

That's exactly my experience. I brought my 1400 in for a noisy BB in the
summer under warranty. After having the bike a week in prime riding season
I picked it up only to find it was still noisy. I took it apart myself to
find they had repacked/re-greased only ONE side. Is that professional?

Needless to say this is the last time I use the dealer I bought my bike from
for service. If my frame does get replaced I plan to assemble/adjust it myself.

    Curiously enough, I bought my last 4 bikes from my last 2 dealers
    *because* of their service to me over the years, and general
    history of dealing with them.

    The one in Charlotte had earned my patronage over the years
    by doing professional maintenance, and occasionally helping
    me out of binds in a crunch (such as when a fork broke, and
    I needed to ride the next day). They even helped me look at
    DeRosa et al. frames at the distributor. (Oh, and then they
    did a first-rate job of building up the bike, as the succeeding
    year's miles were virtually trouble-free.)

    Similar story to the bike shop in Munich.

    Nice way to choose a bike-dealer, if you have the time (and
    a bike already).

    I'm sure there are many avid cyclists in Munich - some were
    visible on the road in all weathers, including spring slush
    in the Alpenvorland.

    I'm afraid I don't don't know about clubs and teams, so
    I'm not being very helpful there. As a start, why not go
    by the shop I referred to, Alessandro Baldi's, which when
    I was there was in the Lindwrmstrae. Another good shop
    is or was located in Neuperlach - the owners (a couple) were
    very knowledgeable and nice to deal with.

    Good luck.

1759.19Cracked rear rim!TINCUP::MFORBESThis Space Intentionally Left BlankWed Oct 31 1990 08:2914
Well the rear rim, an aero Matrix on my Trek 1400, died yesterday. Fortunatly
it expired about 50yds from home. I could feel a slight thumping while riding.
Right near home the tire went flat and upon investinaging the cause, I found
a crack in the rear rim about 2.5" long about 2 inches from the seam. The
crack is curved and runs right at the top edge of the area where the brake pad
contacts the rim.

I took the rear wheel to my Trek dealer, Criterium in Colorado Springs, and they
agreed to replace the rim under warranty even though the bike 15 months old, 3
months out of warranty. They will be replacing it with the "new generation"
Matrix aero wheel which is lighter and stronger. I will be picking it up
today.

1759.22A new Frame and Rim comming...CSSE32::SMITHReality, just a visible imagination?Mon Nov 12 1990 14:0314

    Well, I finally found it getting too cold to ride and took my TREK down
    to the Cycle Loft to address the cracked rim and frame. I dropped it
    off on Saturday and just got a call back from the owner. A new rim
    and frame are being shipped TODAY from TREK and I can expect to have
    it in my hands by the end of the week.

    The only catch was TREK only had blue/white 62cm frames left so I have to
    switch colors ;'( mine was white/red. Bummer, I really liked the
    white/red combination. The 1991 frames have all new colors as well and
    no white/red.
