| Once again, if you open the magazines you will find tens of cars for
sale (new, immediate delivery). Some brokers will ask for more than the
official sale price, some won't. Of course every time a new show
stopper appears there are a number of people out there who will try ..
I have been to a number of Mercedes showrooms. The car is there.
I have been to a number of Porsche showrooms: same thing, leave the
check you can leave with the car.
It's a normal habit for the dealers and brokers to order lots of cars
so they can get a delivery date. That actually reminds me that the same
practises work with Digital as well (our distributors are good at
ordering loads of stuff in order to secure delivery dates of a few
units, and later cancel 99% of the original orders ... that's life).
Final remark: although the BMW Z3 and Mercedes SLK have been available
for sale for a while I haven't seen a single one on the roads so far.
The Porsche Boxster has only been available since 1-Jan-1997 so I keep
my eyes open.

| I would agree with Patrick that much of this is hype and
the activities of speculators. There are plenty of Z3s
for instance being advertised for immediate delivery
but they seem to want 26k for them!
Incidentally there's a Z3 regularly to be seen going
up and down the A33, and has been for some time. Must
be LHD though.

Saw my first Z3 on the M1 on Sunday.

Saw a Z3 on Sunday in Harley Wintney (On foreign plates).
Saw an SLK a couple of weeks back in Windsor.
Yet to see a Boxster !

2569.17 | Ferraris | LEMAN::CHEVAUX | Patrick Chevaux @GEO, DTN 821-4150 | Wed Jan 29 1997 17:16 | 15 |
| On the same topic I know for sure that Ferrari-France ("we have a
wait list for 550's, 456's, 355's, ... until year 2000") are giving 60%
discounts on new cars to get a customer hooked. A year ago I know a
couple of cases where they were offering a new car (F512 I think, list
price FF 1.2M) for around FF 500K in order to compete with Porsche,
Venturi, Lotus amd high end BMWs. This was reported to me by friends in
the car dealership business. Needless to say, Ferrari France would not
admit it ...
I don't think they sell any more Mondials. A few years ago, the Mondial
was the Ferrari dealer nightmare: sell a Mondial ? mission impossible!
Ferrari forced every dealer to order a Mondial in order to get a 328 or
348 GT/GTS. You could go to any Ferrari dealer in the universe and get
a formidable discount on a Mondial. The dealer was so anxious to get
rid of it out of his showroom.

| Another possibility: go see your favourite rental car company. They've
probably bought SLK's.
At Nice airport the trick is to make an arrangement with Avis, Hertz,
Budget, ... in the spring time when they buy those summer toys. At the
end of the holiday season (15-September) you'll get your favourite car
with 10000 km at most, works warranty + additional rental company
warranty included. The rental car company is happy, they have earned
3 times the price of the car. You are happy, you have the car and you
get a good discount.
We did that with new Mercedes and new BMWs.

On the subject of the Boxster, I saw one the other day on my way into
Swindon.
I was behind it for a wee while, but only until the car in front of him
moved over then all I saw was his dust, and I was doing 70+ a bit.
It was absolutely gorgeous.

| Saw a boxster in liverpool, near the Pier Head building.
Looked like a curvy mazda sports car that had been overinflated. The
exhaust sound was impressive.

| I've seen some bad reviews of the Tiptronic version. All the
disadvantages of an auto-gearbox (gears shift up when lifting up)
without the advantages of the steering wheel controls.
Porsche have announced (suprise?) that a S version of the Boxster with
a 270bhp 3 litre version of the new flat-6 will appear later this year
or some time in 1998.
