2538.1 | Slightly different report over here | CHEFS::LINCOLN_J | | Mon Aug 05 1996 15:08 | 12 |
| I've read about this in the UK, where it says that the
gearchange will be by a lever 'on the floor' as opposed
to on the steering wheel. They say that the amount of
movement on a road car steering wheel is too great for
the driver to be able to steer and find the switches
at the same time.
I've also read that most major manufacturers are also
looking at this for their mass market cars, and some
have working prototypes.

| Autocar had a revire of it a few weeks ago.
The gearlever is replaced by a stumpy (but very high tech looking)
lever. I think the shift is in a 'U' shape (like the Jag auto box). one
side of the U simulates a normal auto box the other (more interesting
side) gives you a six speed sequential shift. Pushing the lever forward
changes up and backwards changes down.
The car is about 5 seconds faster round the nurburg ring(?sp) which
gives it a time of the low 2:50's if memory serves me right.
The 'box is an option to the M3 Evo and will add about 2000GBP to the
cost.
Rik - still waiting for a test drive in an M3 Evo
Alpina do a modified 328 (B3.0 I think) which has the 5 speed auto box
attached to two buttons behind the steering wheel.

| I don't necessarily like sequential gearboxes. If think they're OK most
of the time, they give very quick gearchanges and looking at the rally
scene (in car camera images) the drivers don't make mistakes.
I still want to be able to skip gearchanges (5th to 1st in hairpins,
3rd to 5th on motorways, etc ..) so I want to see what BMW Motorsport
have achieved.

2538.5 | Rally 'boxes | CHEFS::slagra.reo.dec.com::Slade_G | | Wed Aug 07 1996 10:57 | 7 |
|
The sequential 'boxes in rally cars are not electronically controlled.
They are "Straight cut" 'boxes, similar to Motorbike Gearboxes.

| Whats wrong with buttons on the steering wheel ?
There should be no need to steer & change gear at the same time.

2538.8 | Not my opinion... | VYGER::JASPERT | | Tue Sep 10 1996 14:54 | 6 |
| Its the opinion of the authors of the police driving manual
"Roadcraft", the Institute of Advanced Drivers & RoSPA.
Not much use for rallying/racing etc. though.
